How to do Gesture Drawing: Drawing Life

Hi Heather! wow thank you for posting your work!! This is really wonderful to see, these drawings are exactly what I'd hoped for - it's so wonderful to see you apply different techniques in each one. I am smiling so much at your drawing of Jessie, WOW you got such a likeness of here, that's so great! Your sketch of the plant is also wonderful, I'm getting a good sense of reaching, arcs and lines, particularly from the bottom of the drawing. Lastly , the drawing of the figure is an excellent example of gesture drawing, using line of action, I can see the first initial marks how they really follow the movement and the overall direction of the pose. I feel that perhaps you could have left the drawing at an earlier stage, before adding outlines of the figure, but that's always the balance that has to be judged, when to stop a gesture drawing, before adding too much detail! Overall I'm so happy to see these drawings, and I think your style of drawing is really suited to gesture, you have a natural and instinctive sense of the approach - hope you continue to explore this and to develop your mark making. Thanks for the feed back, I found your class when looking to get more practice with figure work. So have watched your other class. I really like your style of gesture in the human form. I think I can maybe keep it looser with more of the circular formations you use. I think the circles give it more solidity too. I’d like to try  portrait drawing and getting the head right. I think you had a class on this. Your classes are great so detailed,

Experimenting with different techniques of sketching. I have my own scribbly style which uses arcs.
