CLASS DESCRIPTION

Are you a YouTuber, influencer, writer, live-streamer, public speaker, broadcast host, or content producer of any kind? This is for you.

Being on camera can be awkward. But it is a huge part of being creative these days. I believe EVERYONE has a unique spark that makes them entertaining and interesting. In this course, we will help you learn the fundamentals, give you tools to fit your context, and most importantly, give you the ability to do what no one else can do... be yourself! Here are some things we will learn!

Skill Share Class Outline: Camera Communication

#1: Welcome to the Class

Hey I’m Vince and welcome to my skill share class: Being on Camera and Being Yourself!

lI have been communicating to audiences for the last 10 years. I’ve hosted live broadcasts, pre-recorded videos, on-stage communication, and even small group teaching. And after all of this I have finally discovered how to be comfortable, effective, and most importantly, myself.

Throughout this class, I will be teaching you how to be a confident communicator who is effective but also integrates their own unique personality.

Whether its for your vlog, presentatitons, public speaking, or even recording some funny videos, this class will give you everything you need to take your communication to the next level.

#1: Before you start: Why Engaging Communication is Important

Okay! So here we are. About to start our journey as great communicators. But why be a great communicator? Just because you say something doesn’t mean it was communicated.

As the person with the product, service, or information, it is always on you to make your communication memorable and impactful.

If your communication isnt efficient, you wate time and lose attention.

If it isn’t memorable, your hard work will get lost.

And if it’s not impactful, then you wont get to make the difference you are dreaming about.

Make the decision right now, that you want to be a great communicator who makes a great impact.

Okay before you watch this video. I want you to record a 2-minute video. Only give yourself one opportunity. No redos. And don’t worry, you dont have to post it anywhere. This is just for you.

#4: Bright Eyes

So what did you think? Pretty uncomfortable? That’s good! Just like lifting weights or going on your first run, you are trying something new with your body. Don’t worry about how that came out, what is important is that you did it. I am going to give you one piece of information.

One of the best things you can do, is be “live” before you go “live”. Don’t ramp up on camera, get tehre before hand. Start with a smile, make your self laugh and then hit record. Sometimes I will make a joke to my team or to myself. Even after a bad take, we laugh and ride that energy back into the next take.

Bight Eyes. Before you concentrate, be engaging. As you focus, your energy and face drop. Always start with a smile. Eyes on the camera.

#5: Lights, Camera, Context

Is this live communication or pre-recording?

How formal / casual is the moment?

What do we want people to know?

What do we want people to do?

What are your First + Last Words?

What CANT you miss?

***Does the moment have a climax / ceiling?

#6: Organize Your Information:

Almost every context is going to require you to organize and communicate information. Organize your information.

What’s the goal?

Plan your takeaway (Pick your point) *Coffee Class - Coffee is simple + complex

Plan your bullet points. (Create a map)

Plan your transitions.

Run it a few times. (Internalize)

Ad lib.

Make note of anything special or confusing.

Always plan your first / last words.

#7: Pacing - Slow Down (Probably)

Pacing is so important. Too fast you lose people. Too slow you lose people.

Watch a clip of you speaking. Watch it at different speeds.

Does it sound natural and clear?

It’s necessary to pause. In a pre-recording, a pause is necessary to make the edits clean. In a live setting, these pauses give people time to absorb information, create suspense, or even give you the opportunity to recollect yourself.

#9: Dynamic Range: Know your ceiling - Personal Communication > Proper Communication

80% of your energy output will be returned 20% by a crowd. 80/20 Rule

Pareto Principle:

20% of what you say will make 80% of the impact

We laugh at punch lines, we hold our breath at pauses

Give special attention to the powerful 20%

#11: Co-Hosting

One of the most fun things about being on camera is co-hosting. When it’s right, it is magical.

Finding Chemistry: 80 - 20

80% of your attention on who you’re addressing

20% of your attention “clueing in” the other party

Don’t just act, re-act!

If you see potential, ask for more. Co-host says something weird, ask them to elaborate. If they say something wrong, make a big deal about it.

Hand-off the baton: How to transition between points

Active Listening: agree with your co-host as they talk. Leave room for you both to react to important or emotive information.

#12: You’re a Natural (How to learn to be yourself again)

Repetition: Run the bullet points. Find your own way to explain and communicate

How does the information make you feel? Why do you care?

Long Game Inspiration: Promoting a non-profit: This makes an impact on our kids, future generations, and our city etc…

Personal Inspiration: Promoting a non-profit: When I was _____ I experienced _____. I wish I had something like this when I was young. It would’ve made a difference for me. But we can make a difference now!

What Makes Me, “ME”: You can literally ask people “What is your favorite thing about my personality??”

Be Funny: Find some Irony. Promoting an exercise program? Talk about how much you need it or don’t want to do it.
