Hope everyone is smashing their goals today!

I just wanted to share this with you because I see so many beginner designers getting stuck at the very first hurdle: choosing what CAD software package to start their journey. On one hand you have a totally free and open source FreeCAD and on the other industry standard software packages such as SolidWorks. So, it is very important to decide whether paying for Solidworks is really needed OR FreeCAD is enough for your job.
Having spent 8 years as a freelance CAD/CAE engineer, I’ve seen both sides of the coin. Both FreeCAD and Solidworks, the leading industry standard CAD package are parametric powerhouses and have their uses, but they serve very different stages of your engineering journey.

Here is my quick breakdown:

1. The "Zero-Budget" Hero – FreeCAD: If you are a hobbyist, a maker, or a startup on a shoestring budget, FreeCAD is a godsend.

The Pro: It’s open-source and yours forever. No subscriptions, no "cloud" lock-ins.
The Con: The learning curve is steep, and the UI can feel "clunky" compared to modern standards and you’ll also occasionally run into odd bug here and there.
Best for: 3D printing, personal projects, and learning the logic of parametric modelling without the price tag.

2. The Industry Titan – SolidWorks: There’s a reason most engineering firms demand SolidWorks.

The Pro: It’s incredibly polished. The assembly management and simulation (CAE) tools are best-in-class if not the best available and if you want to get hired as a professional designer, this is the industry standard.
The Con: It’s expensive. Even the "Maker" versions have licensing restrictions that can be tricky for commercial work. You can get it for free as student if your school or university provides a license to you. However, you can’t use it for commercial purposes.
Best for: Complex assemblies, CAM and advanced engineering simulations. Its all in one ultimate CAD package.

So, what’s my advice?
The tools, features and overall methodologies of CAD are practically the same irrespective of the software and are easily transferrable. So, I suggest you start with FreeCAD to master the logic of 3D design. Once you feel limited by the tools or if you’re looking to go pro, make the jump to SolidWorks or any other industry standard package you prefer. But I would still suggest SoldWorks as your pro CAD package.
