Project Instructions

There are 3 Exercises and 1 Final Project in this class.

Exercise 1: Simple Shapes (5 minutes)

In this exercise we will draw some basic shapes and fill them in by drawing in the letters of our names.

Draw the different shapes as instructed in the video.
Fill in all shapes with your name. Let your intuition guide you as you fill in each shape as fully as possible with just the letters of your name.

Exercise 2: Ideas in Shapes (10 minutes)

In this exercise, we'll draw some ideas based on a chosen theme, using the same shapes we used in Ex. 1. We should be warmed up now that we had some idea-free practice in the last exercise!

Come up with a theme to draw from — could be your hobby, job, or favourite topic.
Draw or reuse the same shapes from Exercise 1. Try not to overthink! Let your bad ideas come out in response to the shapes and the theme you chose.

Exercise 3: Ideas in Shapes Squared (10 minutes)

In this exercise, we'll now draw new shapes based on the things we drew INSIDE the shapes in the last exercise. Then, we'll come up with a second theme to draw from in these new shapes.

Draw some open shapes based on the previous theme, in a similar way we did the original shapes in Exercises 1 and 2.
Now come up with a totally UNRELATED theme.
Draw from this new theme in the new shapes you just drew!

Final Project

For the final project, we’re going to turn our favourite sketches into finished illustrations. We’ll start by choosing our favourites — I suggest 3-5 but you can start by just doing one! Next, we’ll refine our rougher sketches by tracing over them in a more careful and considered way.

STEPS

CHOOSE: Choose some favourites (recommended 3-5) from Exercises 1 and 2 to refine.
REFINE: Refine these by tracing over them more confidently.
FINISH: Use your chosen illustration technique, or follow along with Tom, to turn your sketches into finished illustrations!
