This project will teach you the basics of animating in procreate dreams and my process of combining character illustration and photography.

Here’s what you’ll need: an iPad with Procreate Dreams installed, an Apple Pencil, a camera or phone to take your photography and maybe a sketchbook if you like to plan your ideas on paper first.

We’ll kick things off by exploring some of our favourite outdoor spots, where I’ll guide you in capturing your own photography. You’ll learn tips and tricks for framing shots that bring out the best in your scenes, and using perspective, composition, and colour to your advantage. For those who don't fancy journeying outside to photograph or drawing up some designs, I've added some resources including images, my colour palette reference and a Procreate Dreams file that can be used to personalise with your own colours, textures and animation.

From there, we’ll dive into character sketching, building up layers of detail until you’re ready to animate. You’ll experiment with animation techniques like keyframing for smooth, fluid movement and frame-by-frame for a classic, hand-drawn look. By the end, you’ll have a polished animated scene and a set of skills to bring your characters to life anywhere your imagination—and camera—takes you.
