PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Design a repeating pattern from your original artwork using Adobe Illustrator.

ASSIGNMENT:

Your assignment is to import, digitize, and transform your original art into a repeating pattern tile. Share your finished tile with us on the project feed (there's a link to "Create a Project" at the bottom of the "Your Project" tab).

A few helpful tips for creating your project:

1. Start with the end in mind

Creating patterns is FUN...and kind of addictive. Combat analysis paralysis from the start of your project by imagining the best application for your pattern. Is it apparel? Textiles? Homegoods? Accessories? These considerations will help with making color and scale decisions and keep you focused.

2. Avoid seeking too much inspiration from your peers

You got this! Trust your gut and create something that YOU love. If you are feeling stuck, search for inspiration in nature or industries that share your aesthetic without being identical to the patterns you want to create. Pinterest is a great resource for color and theme inspiration. So is a walk outside on a beautiful day :)

3. Keep it simple to start

Limit your color palettes and keep your motifs simple in the beginning. Trust your intuition as you add to your piece. Start with what you know you like when it comes to colors and motifs.

4. Just start!

I encourage you to dive right in to the lessons before overthinking and procrastinating on your ideas. The best work comes from practice and iteration. Have fun and trust the process!

5. Take a break!

Working in front of a computer for long periods of time can be exhausting. If you get frustrated or tired, take a walk, grab a snack, or have a chat with a good friend. Our best ideas often come in times of rest.

Upload your individual tile, as well as your pattern repeated on a 2x3 grid so we can see the pattern on a larger repeat.
