Hi Carl,

That truly depends on what tool you have in mind to create your data visualizations in :) Tableau, R, d3.js, Illustrator, something else? In general I can give the advice to first read a starter book / do a short intro tutorial on the tool that you want to use, just so you know the utmost basics of the program (language). You don't even need to do any in between exercises if you don't want to (that's just my opinion). Then, when you have read through the basics, try and take some visual that already exists, some piece of code, or a file that someone shared that you like, and see if you can make it your own, put a different dataset in there that you're interested in (that last point is rather important, working on projects about topics that you like gives such a boost in enthusiasm!). Once you've taken that baby step, you can try again with a different visual, up to the point where you can start making your own visuals from scratch, and then more projects later, you can come up with wonderful deviations on the standard charts that bring it to a higher level ;)
