21 Class Project – Postcard Design

You’re project is to create your own postcard using the tools & techniques learnt so far in this course. You must demonstrate all the items in the following list (emboss is optional :P ).

Choose a theme
1. e.g. A business or group you are involved with. Or choose a personal hobby for the theme.
Image
1. Use one of your own images or one from Unsplash.com own image or a new image from.
Image correction
1. Ensure the levels & colors are looking good in your images. Some stock images do not need any correction.
Gradient
1. Add a gradient to the image (optional for the final but practice is anyway)
Shapes
1. Have at least 1 shape in the postcard. E.g. Circle, Square, Star.
Color
1. Choose a color scheme or look at Adobe Color Themes for color inspiration.
Text
1. You must include some text in the postcard.
2. You must include some use of ‘text on a path’ e.g. badge.
Layer Styles
1. You must use at least 2 layer styles in your document. E.g. Drop shadow, stroke, gradient overlay, bevel & emboss (gasp).
Presentation
1. You must present your postcard in a way that you feels best represents your work. Not exactly but in a similar fashion to this.
Save & Share
1. Save a JPEG copy of your document or take a screenshot. Share your work on the suggestions above. I’ll do my best to offer any suggestions if you ask for them.
  1. To save a JPEG, go to File > Save As and choose JPEG from the save options.

28 Class Project - Quick Select Tool

Open these 2 images:
1. Exercise Files > 05 Selections & Masking > Quick Select 05 & 06.
Use the Quick Select Tool to select the shoe.
Copy & Paste it to the background image.
Use a drop shadow to help the shoe ‘settle’ in it’s new background.
Share your work.

31 Class project - Cut a person out

Open this image.
1. Exercise Files > 05 Selections & Masking > Quick Select 07
Use the quick select tool to create a layer mask.
Find a new background from Unsplash.com or Google Images.
Use the burn tool to fake a shadow.
Share your work.

33 Class Project – Weaving in & out

Building on the previous project. Use a layer mask to get the model to weave in an out of your text.
Share your awesomeness.

35 Class Project – Selecting Hair

Open this image.
1. Exercise Files > 05 Selections & Masking > Select & Mask 03
Make initial selection with the Quick Selection Tool.
Use Select & Mask feature to fix edges.
Find a new background from Unsplash.com or Google Images.
Compose your model & the new background together.
Share your work.

38 Class Project - Text & Image Interaction

Using either of the following images.

Create your own text.
Use a mixture of the following techniques to get the image to interact with the text.
1. Quick Selection Tool
2. Duplicating Layers
3. Layer ordering
4. Select & Mask
5. Clipping Mask for shadow layer

41 Class Project – Oil Painting

Use your own image.
Use the Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint filter to create your painting.
Share your image.

43 Class exercise – Halftone

Use your own image.
Use the Filter > Stylize > Filter Gallery > Stylize > Halftone
Share your image.

49 Class Project - Peeling Sky

Open the following 2 images.
1. Exercise Files > 08 Transform & Distort >
  1. Warp 02.jpg
  2. Warp 03 Kea-mowat-unsplash.jpg
Using the Transform > Warp tool make the grey sky peel away{ revealing the blue sky.
Use the burn tool too lightly cast shadows.

52 Class Project - Drippy Paint Text

Choose your own font & Word
Using the following tools create your painting text.
1. Clipping Mask
2. Merge Layers
3. Filter > Median
4. Filter > Liquify
5. Burn Tool

Open the following images and retouch as described below.

Use the files in: Exercise Files > 10 Blending Modes > Class Project
Pick one of the bottles & one of the boats to use.
Using the techniques learnt in the preceding video, create a boat in a bottle.
Techniques you’ll need to use:
1. Quick selection tool.
2. Save & load sections.
3. Layer masks.
4. Rotation & scale.
5. Layer blending modes.
6. Burn & Dodge Tools
Share what you’ve done.

Note: If you find the boat selection hard. Cheat by doing a basic selection and use a blending mode to integrate it with the water & clouds.

65 Class Project – Duotones

Use the following image (or your own) to create the duotone effect.
Use the Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map
Share what you’ve done.

67 Class Project - Anaglyph Effect

Use the file in: Exercise Files > 11 Visual Styles > Anaglyph 03.jpg
Create your own anaglyph effect.
Include some text using the same effect.
Do another version with your own image.

Open the file in: Exercise Files > 14 Brushes > Brush 03 Florian-klauer-unsplash.jpg
Use the special effects brushes to create some kind of interesting ink explosion.
1. Make sure the ink is on it’s own layer.
2. Experiment with different special effects brushes.
3. Experiment with type.

79 Class Project - Dripping Paint Brush

Create a new document 2000x1500 px.
Using your own name & your own colors. Use the drip brushes to create a ink drip composition.
