Create a Meaningful "How-To" Video

Welcome + Instructions on Gathering Footage

Capture your "meaningful" footage
Using the 3 act structure discussed in the lesson, capture your Interview/Narration footage and B-Roll.

Refer to the sample in the extra resources for an example of the 3 acts.

Premiere Walkthrough + Importing Your Footage

Start a New Project
Open the program and start a new project.

Give it a title.

Choose your save location.

Set your scratch disk locations.

And we're off and rollin"!!
Import Assets to Project Window
Import all the assets for your How To Video using a couple different methods discussed in the lesson.
Organize Assets
Use bins to organize all the assets for your project.

Getting Footage on the Timeline

Open a clip in the source window and set In/Out points
Open a clip in the source monitor. Set the In-point and Out-Points to where you want them.
Create a New Sequence
Create a new sequence by any of the methods discussed in the video. If speed is your thing, Right-Click the clip to create a new sequence from the clip's settings. If you have the time and want to practice, create a sequence by:

1) Finding your clips settings (aspect ratio, frame rate, audio, etc)

2) Create a new sequence from the presets Premiere has given you or...

3) Set your own settings in the next tab over
Add SOME clips to the Timeline using both editing methods
Practice adding a few clips side by side on the timeline and then pressing play (in the Program Window, or by hitting Space Bar).

Don't edit your entire video yet. The next lesson will teach you important tools and techniques you'll want to know.

Editing Your Video + Audio

Utilize tools and Drop/Drag editing to create your Narration/Interview
Using the Drop/Drag editing method, edit together your Narration/Interview footage on the first video track in your timeline.

Experiment with the different editing tools. Particularly focus on reshaping your footage with the Selection Tool, Ripple Edit Tool, the Rolling Edit Tool, and the Razor Tool.

Along the way, practice with keyboard shortcuts. It really speeds up your editing workflow.
Edit your b-roll footage with Insert/Overwrite editing
Edit together your b-roll footage using the Insert/Overwrite method, along with the Lift/Extract functions. Feel free to resort back to drag/drop when you get stuck, but push yourself to use insert/overwrite as much as possible.
Adjust your audio + Add music
Use keyframes on the timeline or in the Effect tab of the Source window to set your volume levels.

Add music to your video and set keyframes so the volume lowers while someone is speaking, and comes back up when they are not.

Finalizing Your Video

Add titles to your video
Add an intro title to your video, and if you'd like, add titles with a short description of the steps for your video. If the words don't stand out very well against your footage, add shapes under your text for better visibility.

NOTE: If you don't want to use a shape, you can make your text stand out by adding a drop shadow. You can add one to your text by checking the drop shadow box in the same area where you change font color.
Export your timeline
Prepare your sequence for export by either:

1) Setting the In-Point and Out-Point of the timeline section you would like to export. 2) Deleting all extra material you don't want to appear in your final video.

Then export to an H.264 video format with the Vimeo or YouTube preset. Use a constant bit rate (CBR) with 5 or higher as your target bit-rate.
Upload to Vimeo
Now that you've exported a meaningful How To, share it with the class by uploading it to Vimeo. Then take a screenshot from the footage and upload it with a link to your video on the community boards. We're going to collect all the videos on a Vimeo channel, so please add a credit that says Long Winter Media as Skillshare Teachers (that way we can stay in touch and find your video).

NOTE: If you want to get a nice screenshot from your footage, there is an ACTION BUTTON to do that in both the SOURCE window and the PROGRAM window. It looks like a camera. Set it to a JPG format.
