Assignment

Your class project is to paint a little blue wren where you use multiple layers to build 3D form.

Materials

the reference photo is mine and can be downloaded directly.

The paints I'll be using are

Daniel Smith Transparent Brown Oxide (or Burnt Sienna)
Daniel Smith Indigo
Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow medium
Winsor and Newton Cerulean
Winsor and Newton French Ultramarine
Winsor and Newton Yellow Ochre (or Raw Sienna)
Art Spectrum white gouache

Brushes

I'll be using two small synthetics Neef 970 sizes 00 and 5, a Neef bright stiff synthetic 95B-4 for lifting some highlights and a round brush which doesn't have a label on it anymore - probably a size 10, you just need something that has a nice round tip so that the tail feathers are rounded.

Arches cold press watercolour paper, 300g

Palette (I use a cheap basic one)

Board for the paper

Tissues/paper towel

HB pencil and eraser

Jar of water

Sharing Your Work

Please feel free to post your finished painting (or any of the stages) under "Your Project". Questions are encouraged and welcome.

The work you produce is for your own personal use - go ahead and hang it on your wall or gift to a friend but paintings from the class are not to be sold or exhibited.
