You'll make a classic button-down collar shirt using Jalie 2111 shirt pattern. Once you download your pattern, ignore most of the included sewing instructions and follow our methods instead, and you'll have your toddler shirt together in no time!

About our Methods

We sew things a little differently around here, we like to sew first, cut later, be careful when it counts, and carefree when it doesn't. Follow along with us and you'll learn fun, fast and functional ways to make your sewing more fabulous!

Steps to success:

Review the "Get Your Shirt Together Outline" pdf in the Resources section.
Purchase the Jalie 2111 pattern, download it, and print out and tape together size F.
Cut the following pattern pieces from your chosen fabric (if you are using a print, watch the layout videos first).
- Front
- Back
- Yoke
- Sleeve
Cut rectangles out of your fabric:
- Separate buttonhole placket (2.5" x 15")
- Two piece sleeve placket 2 pieces, each 6" x 6"
Cut "hunks" of fabric (that means you don't need to be precise):
- Collar
- Band
- Cuff
Watch our collar and band class to understand our "interfacing template" method for the collar, band and cuffs (see links to these Skillshare classes, below, and in the Resources section).
Download the "Jalle 2111 Interfacing Templates" file - located in the Resources section.
- Print out and tape the interfacing template pieces together.
- CAREFULLY cut out, trace onto fusible interfacing, and then CAREFULLY cut the template pieces out of interfacing. If this doesn't make sense to you, please watch the "collar" video for a detailed explanation.
- You should have 1 collar, 1 band, 2 cuffs, 1 buttonhole placket, and 1 pocket interfacing cut out of interfacing using our interfacing templates.

Other supplies:

1.5 yards 100% cotton fabric - 1 yard for the main parts of the shirt (front, back, sleeve) .5 for the yoke, collar, band, cuffs, and plackets. Mix and match fabric to your desire.
0.25 yards mid-weight fusible interfacing. We like "shirt crisp" from Fashion Sewing Supply. You could also use any plain 100% cotton fabric and a washable glue stick.
The usual sewing notions, iron, sewing machine, etc.
