Helpful Information to Gather

Here’s some of the information that it would be helpful to have.

Note that all of his information will be helpful. But you certainly don’t need all of it from any or all of your information sources.

Gather as much as you can and make the most and best use of what you have.

Role. Whenever possible, identify your potentially ideal clients’ titles, typical days, and what skills they use regularly. Find out what tools they needed to carry out tasks, and if they are part of a large organization, who reports to them —as well as who they report to.
Background. In addition to basic demographic information, learn as much as possible about their career path. Get background on their education, certifications, and special training.
Goals & Challenges. What do your potentially ideal clients hope to accomplish in their business or life? What are their primary challenges and how do they define success for their business and for themselves?
Networks. Where do your potentially ideal clients get their industry news? What blogs, websites, or newspapers do they read? What online or industry groups and associations do they belong to and in what ways do they participate?
Vendor Interactions. What are their preferred methods of connecting with vendors? Email? Phone? Face-to-face? How do they research products or vendors? Online? Through social media? Colleague recommendations? How did they connect with the vendor or find out about the product? What was their evaluation process, and what factors tipped them in favor of their choice.
Why. Every question, whether about demographics, challenges, or recent purchases, should be followed up with a why. This one-word query will provide a world of context to help inform your buyer personas.

How to Use Your Ideal Client Persona

Identify the customer’s needs and wants so you can delight them with your services, and content, which will help earn their repeat business.
Understand how your customers make purchasing decisions, so you can better target your marketing and move them process of deciding to hire you.
Develop new or improved products and services based on the needs and wants of your current clients. This helps your relationship with them to strengthen and evolve.
Determine where your clients spend time on the web and in the world. This gives you insight into how to communicate with them, how to reach new clients like them It also helps you decide where and how to promote your business, and what types of content to produce.
Ensure the consistency of your marketing messages and communication. Using your persona ensures that every service, blog post, marketing email, and client response is consistent in message and aligned with your clients’ needs and expectations.
Target different personas and subsets of personas with the offers and content they’ll be most drawn to, making your marketing efforts generally more effective.
Spend your time and energy on attracting and retaining your most ideal customers, making your marketing more cost-effective.
"Pre-qualify" leads by attracting the right potential clients. Buyer personas result in better leads that are more sales-ready, because you’re reaching the right people by leveraging what they want, rather than by pushing what you want.
