CLASS DESCRIPTION

Find the perfect paint color for any room in your home.

If you’d love to use beautiful, original color when decorating your home but can’t decide which colors, or if you lack the confidence to commit, then this course is for you!

I have spent many years teaching color theory to professional designers, and in this class I’ll share the shortcuts and tricks of the trade that interior designers use to make sure that colors and clients are perfectly matched, and that each client gets their own unique scheme.

What you will learn.

You will begin by working conceptually to create color inspiration, and then use this to generate paint and pigment references that can be applied for real!

By the end of the class you’ll have a recipe of color for a room in your home.

Why you should take this class?

Like good food, good color is one of life's great joys! More than ever you need your home to feel personal, and to be your haven. With opportunities for color in the home being almost limitless, knowing where to start can be bewildering, and committing to color can be scary.

The class handbook gives you a simple framework for building an original palette of color that is matched to your home and that makes your heart sing. Even better, it then guides you to track down your colors in the real world.

Who should take this class?

This class is suited to all levels; you don’t need any prior knowledge and the class could help experienced professionals too.

The project can be completed on a laptop or tablet using free internet tools and common software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Procreate, Photoshop, or Indesign. I’ll also suggest ways you can follow along on paper using paint, pencils, or crayons, and physical paint samples.

Explore color and make an original paint palette for your home decoration project.

Learn which are your ‘safe colors’ and then try working outside your comfort zone
Discover how color within interior design evokes moods and feelings
Choose a guiding mood word to lead you to your color palette
Find inspirational images and use these to help you find new color combinations
Use free online tools, or a simple paper and paint/pencil palette, to define your color scheme
Discover a design rule to help you balance color within a space
Convert conceptual and inspiration materials into real world color references

PROJECT STEP ONE: Check your wardrobe! We all have unconscious colour preferences, let's recognise them... and then actively try new things!
How do you want your space to feel? Different colours and different values of colours create different moods. And different rooms suit different moods, you probably want your bedroom to feel different from your living space
PROJECT STEP TWO: Pick a guiding keyword (description of mood), and find a mood image. With exploration of how to do this, where to find imagery
PROJECT STEP THREE: Colour extraction - 3 ways, digital and analogue. How to isolate an exciting and original palette of colour from your mood inspiration
PROJECT STEP FOUR: Colour matching - 4 ways (online conversion tool; by eye to RAL online; by eye matching to paint charts) analogue and digital. The transition between conceptual inspiration and actual colour references in the real world
Taking inspiration from one picture, two ways. You are boss. From your palette, you choose which colours should be dominant; an exploration of different choices and their different outcomes
Tips: be bold, be picky! As Lewis Carroll said: we only regret the chances we didn't take. Don't dilute colour, unless you want to dilute impact
