The map you see created in this course was made on-the-fly, and was purely for creative demonstration. But you might have a world living in your mind that you'd like to create. And if not - this is an opportunity to learn some new techniques and challenge your imagination too.

Each video adds a new layer of detail. To follow along, simply open up your software. Some notes about the set up of the file:

Design/create in high resolution. My original file was 8000x4500 (which is standard screen resolution of 1920 x 1080. You do not need to make it this large; but I always consider that I might use a map graphic for other purposes (including print). Starting in high resolution means you'll preserve the quality for instances where you may want to print large format, or zoom into an area (eg. in a chapter, you may focus on one island).

If you are creating with future plans, go big!
You need stock / reference photos to use a 'texture'.
In the video, I used free photos from Unsplash.com and some from Adobe Stock Photos. You may need to check around you favorite sources to find aerial photos or textures. Try to find 'seamless' grass textures for wide areas so when you apply 'patterns', they can repeat.

Examples of the kind of textures you might use:
Stone | Seamless Grass | Water Textures | Mountains | Trees

Keep in mind some design variations:

You can break all the rules, and apply textures in whatever creative way you prefer. Maybe it's an alien world, and the ocean is red. Or the land is barren and dry. Or whatever else you can imagine.
Find textures that work to express your ideas!
The tips I am sharing are like sharing with you my paint brush and painting tips. When you pick up your brush, you can use them in your own way!
