Day 14, texture.

I chose a photo of worm-casts on a sea shell that I took in the olden days when we were allowed to go to the beach. It was lovely to just sit and copy the shapes then let them continue wherever I wanted. Thankyou very much Marie for the challenges, they’ve been great fun. I have learnt some useful things about my work and have made lots of pictures in this sketchbook. I have two main sketchbooks that I work from, one for observational drawing only and one for things that aren’t observational. I found recently that I was only working in the observational one as it was easier to record what I saw in front of me than to create new images. I was getting rather scared of this second sketchbook, but now I have put 14 more pictures in it and it doesn’t seem nearly so daunting.

Day 13, take two.

The threads sort of chose themselves as they were already stitched across the left hand page, following on from my earlier stitched picture. So I added some more thread and the tadpoles from the metamorphosis two picture. Again, I really liked the simple effectiveness of this prompt for finding a new idea.

Day 12, Structure.

this was a rather late-at-night piece for me as yesterday was a bit hectic. And I completely forgot to post it up here!

Day 11, transform me.

This exercise seemed quite tricky because I have been trying to fill all the page for these exercises, and there wasn’t much space to add more. I didn’t really like my first picture for ‘Journey’ , so I decided to take bits away instead of adding them and I think the end result is more interesting than it was before. I also very much like the idea of changing work I’m not happy with just to see where it takes me.

Day 10, thread.

This prompt was a real gift for me as I could use my sewing things. It’s been a tough day today and I’ve barely managed to do any work at all so granting myself 20 quiet minutes to make this picture felt like a real rest. I think it’s quite a restful picture for me too.

Day 9, flatten it out.

This is another very different approach for me, but again I found it really fun. When we lived in Scotland I loved hunting for starfish on the beach.

Day 8, the colours of my day.

I really enjoyed this one, it felt quick and calm and simple. I don’t do much abstract drawing, perhaps that should be an aim for another day, but this is getting close for me. I painted things that make up my day in one long stream, then added collage from the scraps basket I am using for my current picture book project. Work and life all intermingled.

Day 7, a crowd of creatures.

Just that, to draw a crowd of creatures. I drew this picture whilst cajoling my son to complete his Spanish homework, and I suspect my focus was not on the page in front of me. Distraction and interruption are my creativity enemies.

Day 6, metamorphosis part two.

I don’t often fill a whole page unless I really have to so this was a really good excessive for me. And I love frogs.

Day 5, metamorphosis part one.
I couldn’t quite remember the shape of pea flowers and was determined not to interrupt my drawing by picking up my phone to find out. So I just guessed from memories of last year’s peas.

Day 4, shake it up.

As with the slow challenge I found I had to keep reminding myself to work quickly and not get lost in the moment. I didn’t know what I would draw when I started, I just wanted to fill the whole page. The creatures were a hasty addition to fill some of the white gaps between the trees.

Day 3, going slowly. This one was really enjoyable for me, but also quite hard as I had to keep reminding myself to slow down. This is a pear tree in our garden with one all its older branches on the left and one young branch on the right. I really liked paying attention to the feel of the brush on the page and noticing the way the ink and crayon drew differently on the two different pages. I make many of my own sketchbooks with mixtures of different papers I have lying about, and I enjoy the different textures and weights of the pages.

Day 2, cloudwatching. I began with a black ink wiggly shape you can just about see in the middle, and out came this rather extravagant dancer.
