For your class project, you'll pick one of the methods covered in the class to create your final portrait!

To begin, please head over to the Pinterest Board if you don't already have a reference of your own, and select one that stands out to you! Then, follow one of the three different methods outlined in the class to produce your own striking portrait! I would recommend beginners try out the transfer and freehand methods first. If you're more experienced or ambitious, give that more systematic Loomis method a go!

Feel free to do more than just one portrait using all the different methods so that you may internalize all the different techniques. If you'd like to draw the same portraits that I did, you can find it linked in the resources section to your right.

MATERIALS

Feel free to use whichever brand that is most easily accessible to you. The basic materials needed are:

White charcoal pencil
A4 Black paper
Kneaded eraser.
Tombow mono zero eraser. If you can’t get this, you can use a razor to shape a hard eraser into a slim point to make the bright highlight details.
Blending stump (optional)
Soft round brush (optional)
Sharpener.
A piece of spare paper to prevent smudging.
Fixative (optional)
