Paint your own abstract piece based on natural textures and patterns!

First you’ll want to find your inspiration from the natural world. Go on a hunt for interesting textures and patterns in your favorite outdoor spots—remember to keep zooming in to find new perspectives!—or follow along with Rosalie using the rock texture photo in the resources section.

Then, you’ll want to prep your materials by mixing colors to match what you see in your inspiration photo.

Next, start your piece by roughly sketching out the shapes and composition. Lay down the major blocks of color, then use Rosalie’s tricks for quickly adding lots of texture and detail.

Whatever masterpiece you create, please share it in the project gallery so we can all be inspired by your unique perspective of the natural world!

Materials

Watercolor paints (tube or pan paints will do the job!)
Watercolor brushes (whatever sizes you prefer)
Watercolor paper (Rosalie is using Strathmore)
Palette for mixing paints
Photo of an interesting natural texture (feel free to take your own or use the rock texture Rosalie is painting)
Cup full of water
Sketching pencil
Eraser
Paper towel or napkin
