If you’ve taken a few of my Adobe Illustrator classes on Skillshare, you may be curious about building a surface pattern design business.

I’ve been freelancing and licensing my art for 11 years now, as a professional surface pattern designer. You may hear that term and think all I do is make patterns but really surface design is about decorative art for products- so I design gift bags, greeting cards, prints for apparel, dinnerware- a whole host of things that aren’t always in repeat. And I LOVE Adobe Illustrator, though it’s definitely not the only tool you can use in this industry.

Just like any freelance work, finding the right clients in surface pattern design- or art for products- can be tricky, but I wanted to offer some advice for those who may be interested.
