1. Session One Welcome and Introduction: today I'm in Baranowski from her that test mania and I'm here to share my passion, which is would work, as you can see behind you, my lovely woodworking toes. So this course will help you to make a small project, which is a display cabinet or poor case. But more importantly, it will give you the skills to do a lot of things, fix things around the house, make things and and enjoy the pleasure of working with wood. So let's, uh, let's just get on with it before we do. Though I thought on to share some of these wonderful photos that I found on a site court unspool EHSH. It almost makes you want to bay in the workshops. Just to enjoy Project through this course is a small display case which could be buried in mating toe, a bookcase or even their small, delicate Trickett case. We'll discuss this further in the next a session. Thoughts here is, though an example, one that I have made, and you can say what I've got in mind. I thought you might like to see some of the wood that I have done over the years. The last chest table is one that I made when I was a teenager using only hand tools. I'm showing this because I was, like, a prove to you that can tolls are wonderful. And you could do almost anything with them That you please. I thought you might like to make Jenna my faithful companion and assistant into town. 2. Session Two What to make: Welcome back. Today we're going to look at the display case or bookshop, which you may made like to make in the next few weeks. I've done a rough design, and we will explore how you can change that to suit your needs and also the skills that you will gain from that. So I hope you're enjoying this lesson and plays feedback any thoughts on the forum. So this is a good time to start by books there. Lots of wonderful work working books. The one I would suggest is that is a very old fashioned one. Cold would work in theory and practice by Walton. It's been around for a long time, and for handles it's probably still the best, and it is still available through the Internet. I always find it's useful to a rough sketch of what you're going to make. In this case, it's a small display, but you can make it any sightly like I've made it 300 by 400 mills, um, and with one shelf. But of course you can do what you please. You could make drug four sides bookshelf, or you could have different designs to it and saw exactly what you want. So you see here some variations with more shelves. Or if you want to make a little treatment, I dislike that. You could put in different ups and downs and crosses. And basically, whatever you want, the principles are the same. Here's the display cabinet that I've made and from different angles. You could see the front angle with the joints and then moved on to the side. What you can say that more data town and the back off? The the most important thing about this project is that you will learn different techniques . It's not about what you're writing. It's the process so you can save from the design you're goingto have like a housing joint, which is a really useful joint to know about and a lap joint. But you're also learned to measure the wood to cut the wood, to use chisels and to finish your project all skills, which you can apply in so many different projects that you're working on, which is the point of this course. Just one little thing. The best way to develop your own design. Your own thought is to see what other people have done so spend time looking at antique or older style cabinets or display cabinets that, more importantly, have a look at Richer and take it apart in your mind. See how it's made looking the drawers. Look at the joints. Try my belief tables on Just simply learned to love furniture and and the people in item okay lets us come up in a recession. 3. Session Three Workspace and tools: Welcome back we're today. We're gonna look at your workspace how you can set yourself up comfortably with with the workshop or small space in your flat or every living. And we'll also look at a selection off hand tools that you will be using during this programme on which hopefully you will enjoy and use for the rest of your life. It's very important to have your workspace. A good solid bench is it is important or a bench attached to the wall. I understand that you may not have access to a large workshop like I do, luckily, but it can also be a part of a garage, a part of your house. A room in your house saw even Justin area, depending on what you want to build. You can also work with community groups or men sheds to find somewhere Teoh work from. If you can afford a new board bench, that's great. If you can't what the older benches have Lots of character and justice courts. I just need to be solid and safe. Andrew can be bought relatively cheaply and is in a central part of your work. It's the only electrical told we will use. It's worth getting, perhaps a tech Emma and a normal hand Hemmer. I've been collecting them all my life and that their pre special you can see the tiny one on the bottom is for violin making, and in their ranged from two different sizes. 4. Session Four Measuring: There's such a thing as the Greek golden rule, clever paperwork breaks and life figured out for the human eye. The center point is unattractive, unappealing. So if you move, in my case, if I move that up a little bit, it becomes more appealing to the eye. You can see that the ratio is actually 1.618 if you want to be precise and you can look it up and see if you really wanted to measure it. Actually, you could do that, but you'll notice that this is one. And that's 10.6 roughly, so that makes it far more appealing. Um, wonderful, too, to look at it at the great buildings and have that's passed down. So it I would cat. This is roughly where I want to God. Okay, so looking at my plan, I need through pieces 400 mills and I need three paces, 300 mills. This is a really good sort of tape measure that you can get their all pretty standard, but basically you can see it's got inches and centimeters always useful, depending on how your brain is working at the time. The other thing is you've pushed the button down and it holds it in place, which is very useful. So in order to get my parts exactly the same, the simplest thing to dough is tow line the two pieces of wood together like that and I need to at 400 now this is a square which I strongly recommend that you buy what you have to buy. Really? You can get them secondhand. Of course, the grand advantages that you can adjust it. 5. Session Five Cutting: okay, I mentioned a minute. A guy that my my pencil, was blunt. The best way to sharpen pencils forward would is just with the old fashioned Stanley knife . And it's just a matter of peeling it off until you get quite a nice shop point. And then you don't make mistakes like I did before. Now we need to I need to cut the wood. There are different levels of source, depending on how many teeth they have. Can you see how many you take? It's hard to say, but this one is called across sore. It's a beautiful source, Justin sore, probably made in about identity, but it still works beautifully, so sores are determined by the number off teeth that they have per inch the more teeth they have finer. The sore. This is a tenant sore and has more teeth. Then, um, across sore Rip saw is even bigger, and that has, um, fewer teeth Now. The advantage is, of course, the fewer teeth, the fast you cut. But then the rougher your country is going to bay. In this case, I want fine cuts because it's a fine. It's a fine place. Work that I'm doing now? Nothing is really useful. The problem with that is that it will ripped along. The bottom will be ripped, that sharper that you go and you bigger your sore. So in this case, I'm just going to keep it a nice, gentle angle. Now it's got a good idea just to practice, get some bits of wood, always squared off with a square and practice on either side. Practice makes perfect, as I say, although not entirely convinced of that. Some of the try things all my life I never really get it right. Uh, now that's covered the section off, cutting you watch every bit I'll cut them up and have them ready for next time.
6. Session Six Housing joint cut: I didn't say. I now cut the pieces of wood to lie out. The little shelf that I'm making you may 1st thing to do is to mark or your joints. So you know which ones you're doing. Tie this one. I'm going to put I and I there and then Bay and Bay. Okay, So the next thing we're going to do is to measure the joints. In order to do that, I've decided that this is where I want to put that that joint. And I can put the square point drawer across exactly where I wanted. Okay? Yeah. And you can say that I've already done it with the lower ones to find the depth off the joint. You simply put your piece of wood on there and you can either toward across Oh, uh, you can market at a spot. What? You want it something? Just check with the square and go across the screen. 7. Session Seven Housing Joint Groove: So now I'm going to introduce you to chisels here with a wonderful devices. But they're also very dangerous, particularly if sharp I can confirm that I've got scars on my hands to prove it. She's always, always buy good quality. I've said that time time again, but it's important. So they have a bevel on the front and a flat on the bottom you can hold. And there are various sizes, as you can see from, you know, quite wide and wider to quite narrow. In this case, we have to select one which is going to fit into the groove. I think that one might that's about, uh, 12 mil icing. Why you hold a chisel shy? First of all, in order to hit the chicken, you generally have a mallet, which you can buy cheaply. If you don't have a mallet, use a hammer, but do not use it like that is at the side. And that way you went white, and that was with very sore thumb. Luckily, I've got a mallet, so I'm going to use that the way you hold it. Chisel the way I hold it on the paper, do it differently of course for a couple of fingers on either hold like that and just gently and you could say I put the bevel down, so I'm going in. If I go that way, the chisel will move down into the woods. This is what I'm going to try and do. It is chisel out Now start to go down to the line. You don't stop at the line that you can say you start just above it, so just take out a little bit time. I can go like that and you can see it's starting to come out. And I got down a little bit more if it moves around him that you know what try and point and the words coming out now. Don't keep going through it, but turned it around and started the other side. If you do, it will probably split again, just above in the middle, just above, as I mentioned sometimes because the sore my soul cause the sores moving up and down like that. Um, if if by any chance you make it too small, there's two ways out of that one. Sometimes I just plain or send the edge of the wood so it can sleeping, trying to soar A very thin bid is very difficult, so that sometimes works. If you've made it too big, don't worry. 8. Session Eight Lap Joint: today, we're gonna look at how to make a let joint, which is the top of the Cabinet. It's a nice joint, and you can also vary it by rounding off the ages. So you can say that I have now completed the four housing joints and it fits quite nicely together. What I'm going to do next have the left joints here. So this pace needs to slot into the frame up here. Not sure being said that properly, but it will come clear as we go through. You've seen pictures off the joints, and that's what we intend to do. Now the first thing to do is to measure where you want to that joint. So by placing that the top piece just at that rotten position, you can just market Just put a small mark there on then with with the square, just run it alone. And that way you brought the debts alarmism crosswise to get the death. Of course, it needs to be the same gift as the, um, housing joint. To do that, you get the pencil, as I showed you before. Get the depth and go here and across the top and down the side. The next thing to do is to make sure that you have a straight line going down two way where you would do the cut. So that's one there. And another one. Yeah. Now, what is going to be taken out is this bit here and all right down all of this part Here, Do that. Of course. Pick up the old trusty Kennett saw and cut just within the lines. So you leave the line on and cut down through the line that you must check on the other side needs to go down just a little bit more. And remember what I said before about just might be a bit short that it and they have crossed. Now Teoh, take this bid off. If it's very straight grain, you can chisel it off. But very often it's not. Which means you're going to ruin your work. So the best thing to do so the first thing to do is try and get a bit of it. So I put put, put your thumb on the wood and then rest the sore against the town to give you a a bit of direction. But I try and do is a bit of a niche beginning on, then work my wife back along the line until I get to the end, and then once I brought the line across, then it's a matter off just soaring down. It comes off. There are times when it doesn't come off and you just cut in a little bit. 9. Session Nine Construction: Well, it's a big day today because we're going to actually put your construction together and you will have have your bookcase or your display cabinet, um, in one pace, which is great. And let's see how to do that. Well, this is the fun bit. This is when you when I put it all together, you could say, Now, I've got all the joints in place. Um, and I need to fasten it. Well, I'm going to do that is to put glue in the joints and nails in the side and then, uh, cover them with be swank's. Now, if you have made a larger construction such as a bookcase, it may be more suitable to put screws into the side or or, um, coach bolts to make it stronger. Now I know that I'm going to be covering finishing the wood in the next session, but I thought I might mention this is actually quite a good time to finish it while all the bits are all apart. So I just show you briefly. If when you get timber, which has been freshly milled, it's quite shop on the edges. One way to overcome that is to use your block plane and to just run along the edges like that. And then you get that beautiful fine, uh, finish. I'll show you at a different angle so that you can say so. If I go like that, peels it off, have to waas. And that makes the age quite self. Another wife Do it, of course, is just work with 1 20 cent paper and took another piece and just take off the edge. You can finish it now if you wish, but I'll show you how to do that properly next time, in order to secure the joints on, the first thing I would do is just get a bit of glue and run it into the groove just a little bit like that. It's just normal woodwork glue that you can buy the any store and rabbit through with your fingers so that it goes the full length. Now I find it easier to actually have the wood secured into advice you can see and then sit that on top like that and maybe lower it a bit until it's flat. That helps a great deal, I find now Hammers mentioned him is the important thing is to buy Hammer that feels right. US this'll One is probably 100 years old. That's a beautiful hammer to use. Make sure you get a good quality now, a trick to stop with all bent nails. And we've all had sore thumbs. So the trick is to before you use it to rub the end on sandpiper taken ill and straighten this up, and I can just get that point there with Gemma. Just move the camera bid with a hammer. It's important. Get a good swing so it hits the Nile. You don't have to hit hard. You just have to get a swing, right? That's what I'm doing. So if you could buy a Nile punch and put it onto the nail like that, give it one two solid hits and the same there and with this is Teddy. Kill. It looks nice consistently here, and it covers it up with sandpaper and and just face weeks. And you can see Oh, just get Tyson for you. Say that it's actually now covered nicely. I'm are finished the rest of it, and then we'll talk again.
10. Session Ten Backing 1: now that the construction together when I need to put a back on it. And I haven't plywood pretty commonplace. Applaud word. But you can have whatever you want on the back. Whatever makes it work for you. Um, so I'm going to measure it, putting it when I just make short or doesn't matter, cause we connects plane down after we finished, I finished that. Now I want at the bottom. I don't want this. I just wanted clear so I can cover on there and so well out. Cutting plywood can be quite challenging because, um, as you can say it, it's a thing Time would and sorcerer lion. So in order to cause it, I'm going to use a cross or put a bit of wax on my guys here now that when you put a magical shift, make sure you're gonna catch that. Cut the bench, you find going. I just ribbit shape. If I go sharply so nature of the sources close to a dangerous possible put your thumb on it . And if I go, I'll show you what happens. You can say that it's written ripping the water part solid trick is to do a very fine angle . A certain sores, all nice level with wood and look on the next. Just a bit of sandpaper and just go along the edge of thieves. I just do it quick. Check to save it or fits, which it does. You can see it. The bank, it's It covers nicely and turned it, and now I'm rate ported own. I think I'll put it this way around to be rough. The bottom is you can see that can startle clean up later. So the best thing I'm going to do is put a little bit of glue just around where the where they backing is going, probably not necessary. You just run around with my finger, smoothed it all, forget all the ages followed around. Yeah, and, of course, the middle. And then place back on again. Now this started is probably worth investing in a tech hammer liquid value you consider smaller, much easier to use for small nails and again on sand. The end. Just move the camera up a bit. 11. Session Eleven Patching Up 1: now to finish this off. Often what happens is that the plywood is a little bit a bit raised, is waiting, overcome? That is, to use that to use a plane I suggested earlier. I think that you buy a block plane. I find they're beautiful to use hand, easy to use, a bit of para from wax, Of course, to make it easy. It'll take it right down to the way you want it to God, and you can see. Now it's gone right down to the I just moved saying, Save a bit better now may well be that that you would like to round the top off the cabinet just to make it look a bit nicer. Now, an easy why to do that he's using using your your plane and what I suggested. Well, first of all, be very careful than ours are down enough, so you may need to know. Sometimes you end up with little gaps that you need to fill. And as you can see here, I've got a get where I didn't complete the, uh the joint terribly well. One way to do that would be, of course, to fill it, but it's quite a big gap in this case. So what I've done is cut out a small chip that you can see a bit of an angle, and when I'm going to do, he's put a little bit of gluing here like that. Push down Now, if you wanna get glued down and goodbye, the dirt is to blow it on. That blows down into the hole, wipe a little bit. Officer don't need all of that, and then I can slot the wedge in 10 down Can't be not too far. Otherwise we'll start pulling the joint apart and then just take off the top off the wedge with the chisel and plan down more. And then it will with a bit of sandpaper, you could say already that is starting to look.
12. Sesson Twelve finish and enjoy: Okay. Finally. This is the last lesson, and we're going to look at how to finish your project, sanding on and putting a lecher on it. And then you'll have your first project in wood. Well done. You okay? Now, where this, as you say, the timbers failing fairly well finished cleaned. So I would start with a 1 20 and you put it on if you buy rather I mean a cork. That's good. Yeah, the choices are just a playoff. Action would vanish, such as this. The wood vanishes. I usually get a critic. That means you can wash them out in in water, which makes it much easier or you can also get oil last This is it the one I made earlier I did with with a spray lecher. And it looks OK. Another alternative oils oil finish is lovely. This is a a tongue oil based and that could be painted on or put on with a cloth Danish. Or that lots of different oils available, which to really nice finish on one of my favorites, of course, is just the old fashioned shelling, which is French Polish, and you can buy them bottles. Or you can buy the flakes, which I prefer to do and make it up myself with methylated spirits and again that could be put on with a fine paintbrush or are or a cloth. Finally, there are some really lovely tribute said that some lovely financial waxes available. This one is a test minion one. And, uh, it's lemon. So when you you smell it, it's absolutely delicious. So that's really all I can tell you. There are local. Obviously, you could do home courses in finishing, but that there the alternative. Okay, well, look, that's basically the finishing of the program. I hope that you've enjoyed this. Obviously, there's a lot more to learn. But my hope was that I would just pick up a few basic skills, mainly to get your confidence and simply enjoy the pleasures of working with wood. Plenty more to learn. Session One Introduction to Woodworking Skills for Beginners Part B PROMO: Hello, my name is m Borowski, and I'd like to introduce you to my co-producer, cima, which great help, as you could imagine. I'd like to welcome you all of course, to part two of woodworking techniques for beginners. Just a hint. If, if you are looking at this for the first time, might be best viewed through the beginners. 14. Session One Make a Hand Crafted Table: Well, welcome everybody, my density and Borowski and it's nine part series of woodworking.
