class and definitely I can't wait to see what you
aplod to project section. So let's not wait,
grab your iPad, Apple pencil, and
let's paint together.
2. About Class Project : So in this part of the class, let's talk about class project, and your class
project will be next. Let's create lovely Christmas
postcard illustration with digital watercolor brushes
that I prepared for you. You can pick the styles
that you like most. Again, you can use my
reference pictures. You can use my stem brushes, or create your own design and your own illustration.
It's totally fine. The most important
is just to get the general knowledge of
creating Christmas postcard. Watercolor style and procreate. I would use procreate
for this clad with iPad and Apple pencil. So if you have it, or maybe
some other drawing pads. Oh, you can just use regular
watercolor paper and paints. Feel free to use them, and of course, good luck. And in today's class, I will play very lovely
Christmas illustration. We'll play with different
painting styles. And I will show you
easy and fun way of creating postcard. Within a few minutes and a little bit more advanced
one where we're going to use stem brushes for
creating sketch, and then we're going to
layer the colors one by one. So we will have a few steps of creating Christmas
postcard illustration. First step, we're going
to put the color. Second step, we're going
to add some shades, another step, we're going to add some final touches
like splatters, and additionally, I will
show you how to add some vintage wipes to your
Christmas illustration. So we're going to age the paper, and we're going to
add some vintage wipe touches to our art. So let's wait a little bit. Once again, you can choose
completely different topic, completely different sketch,
and draw something new. Try experiment and enjoy
painting process together.
3. About Freebies & Textured Paper: In this class, we're
going to talk about resources and where
to find them. It's pretty simple
follow the steps, go to projects and
resources section, and then download
all the previous, then go to Fils app
and then import all of the files from Files app from Downloads folder
into the Procreate. And then we are ready to
create texture paper. Just follow my steps carefully, and if something is not clear, I am ready to help you
in discussion section. Composition. We to
find inspiration. Lovely Skillshare community. We are ready for our a
little bit big class where I will show you how to create vintage style
Christmas illustration and a few different
painting styles. And at the beginning
of my class, I will explain to you where
to get all the freebies and how to create texture
paper. So let's start. Now let's talk
about the freebies. So when you open my class, please do it in browser. It can be Chrome or Safari. Browser because if you
do it at Skillshare app, my freebies might
not be visible. So when you open my
class in browser, then you go to Project
and Resources section, and in the right corner, under the headline resources, you can find all my freebies. So you download them, and then you go to Files app. You need to select
Procreate and just I will send to you my Vintage Christmas
sketch that I prepared. And, of course, I have
vintage paper, but of course, feel free to use your own sketch to create the
composition that you like. And apart from that, we
have Christmas brush set and we have
Christmas swatches. So when we import everything
into the procret, now it's time to
create texture paper. So then you need to tap
less and tap screen size. But then after that, let's just duplicate a
couple of times our layers. And the next step is, let's just import our
paper into the procret. Rotate, rotate, feed to screen. And as you see, the size is a little bit wider than our paper, but that's not a big problem. Let's go to uniform and just
move paper to the sides. And the next step, what we
need to do is let's just add some blending
features to our paper. So then I will duplicate paper, and with the first one, let's just write paper one. And paper two. We created paper one, paper two, and paper three. Rename paper three. Then let's change
blend layer mode for paper one to multiply, and then I'll turn it off, make it invisible for a while. Then I go to paper two, and here I change blend
ular mode to color burn, and then paper three, change blendular
mode to linear burn. Then I will go to
paper two and I will swipe left and I
will press duplicate. Then I selected two
color burn layers and I will merge it together. And then I will lower
the opacity till 65%. I will go to linear burn blending layer
mode and I will lower the opacity till 70%. And then I will turn
on the visibility of multiply blending
layer mode and move the opacity till 70% too. Maybe for color burn, it will be even 60. Multiply 70%, color burn layer, paper two, 60%, and
linear burn 60%. By swiping right, I select
all three paper layers, and then I will press group. Rename. Paper. So that's our paper that we're
going to use today, and now it has what
color planting features. Pay attention. We need to draw under the
paper layer group. So then we have the layer
and I will write sketch. And here I will write color and I will create
one more layer above and write Shape layer. I will change blending layer
mode here to multiply. Okay, we created the paper. We created the layers that we're going to
use during our class. And now let's jump into
creating postcard process.
4. Practice: Fast & Easy Postcard : You have a few options, how to create sketch. First, you can use my
stem brushes that I prepared today and create
lovely composition. Another way is you
can actually go to the paxels.com
or unsplash.com, find some reference pictures
and just paint by yourself. Like just look at
the illustration, then redraw it, and then add the colors. This
is another way. And the third way is actually
what we're gonna do very, very soon is that we actually don't really
need the sketches. I've already prepared
a few special brushes that can help you to create beautiful wood color
illustrations very fast. So I hope you are
ready. Back next one. Da da da. So about the color palettes, let me show you what do we have? We have Christmas
postcard, this one, and if you want to make this color palette our
main color palette, we need to tap three dots and then press set as a default. So now when we go to the disc here underneath the
disc with colors, we have our Christmas
postcard color palette that we're going to use today. Okay, wonderful. After that, let's go to the brush set. That's a brush set that
we're going to use today, and I prepared for you tons of new brushes and a
lot of variations, how you can create lovely
watercolor postcard. Guys, we have a few
different painting styles. I will show you two
ways how to create watercolor postcard
illustrations super fast and super easy. So we have six B compressed
brush that we're going to use as our agent paper brush. It's native procreate brush. We have six B pencil, also
native procreate brush, and the rest of the
brushes are my brushes. Oriental dry brush also is
very good for agent paper or add some dry watercolor
brush strokes as a shading. And then opal Blue, dark, watercolor edges out
two main brushes. Bull watercolor background
for soft shades, B lapis las leaf for
the final touches, bo natural stains, brush
and blender as a planter, and as a lovely brush. I will show you later.
Bu perfect color small, also very good for adding tiny watercolor blending effect. A very good as a blender. And the next brushes are
very, very beautiful. A stem brush. They can help you to create
lovely postcard very fast. Then we have Christmas
tree branches. I won't use them
today, but again, feel free to use
your creativity and create so many different
types of what texture paper. Of what colour postcard. Another Christmas
tree, this one. Me dense and less dense, you can leap to stree you can create beautiful frame
thanks to those brushes. So I just use your
creativity and create a brunch that
will bring joy to you. Some snowflakes also amazing choice for creating
lovely postcards. And we have different
stem brushes. That we're going to use
for our first postcard. So clear kin. And of course, we shouldn't
forget about the phone that I created that we're going to use for
our postcard, too. So my suggestion,
let's duplicate color layer a few
times still keep one. Let's just turn off the visibility for our
next illustration. Let's go to the
first color layer. And here, this is a special color that we will use for our first illustration. I will go with pink color, and I have this lovely sock and I'm going to apply
this color to the sock. Then probably I want
to make it tiny bit smaller like that. Then I will go to the
new layer because I want to change the position of some
of the postcard elements. So that's why I need to go to the new layer and
we will go with a gift. Tu ext. Okay. Go to the new layer. And this time, I just want
to go and grab green color, and I will add Christmas tree. And think about the position where you would
like to place it, where it would look
just like amazing. I think here would be fine. Maybe I want to add one
more Christmas tree. And you can alter the shape
and the size of the trees. So maybe this one I would
like to make bigger. Then what about same pink
color, maybe even pinkish. And I will go with gift again. Now let's go with this
lovely blue color. Same gift. I like this
green color. What? Blue colour? Not green color. And just make it a
little bit smaller. I would like to place it here. And duplicate color layer clear. Fine. Let's go
with orange color. And our last gift will be here. Maybe bigger. Like that. Then And over there, I would like to write some like Merry Christmas,
something like that. Merge together all the layers. Then go with blue color. Then add a text. Merry Christmas. I think it's a
little bit too dark. And we can write Merry
Christmas somewhere here. Another suggestion,
what else you can do? If you want? Let's just
duplicate this layer. If you want, you can go to the selection tool,
press rectangle. An area where we have
Merry Christmas, you need to select. Remember, we are still
staying on our color layer, and then we need to press
to move three fingers down and press cut. So now the area where
we have the text will not interfere with
our illustration. Or another suggestion, I think
it would be even better. So we have Merry Christmas
here. We have our color. We will go to curves, and we can saturate or, for example,
desaturate this area. So make it less visible. So now, again, it will not interfere with our
Merry Christmas text. So whatever you like,
whatever you want, just try to be creative and
create your own illustration. This is the fastest
way how to create lovely and playful
watercolor postcard. Now let's go to a little
bit more advanced style.
5. Second Postcard: Sketch: So after we created our lovely Christmas
illustration in a first way that was our
first painting technique. I think we are
ready to jump into sketching process of
our second postcard. So I hope you are ready. Okay. Second postcard. Here, we're going to
use another style, and I will use our
pencil stems here. So I want to grab some of the Christmas elements and
arrange them together. In a center, we're going to have our Merry Christmas
awards right in a center. So our task now is arrange
the elements around Merry Christmas headline
in a most beautiful way. I already duplicated color
layers a couple of times. I have this blue color
as our sketching color, and then just grab the
stamp bras that you like and try to put a stamp
on every new layer. If you want, you can
duplicate the layers as many times as you need and keep
adding more and more elements. So we can grab gingerbread
man and arrange him, like place him here,
change the size. It's actually very cute. Let's go to another layer. And here, I would like
to use Christmas gift, and I will just,
like, leave it here. Maybe I will lower the size. And I would think
where I would like to place it maybe
somewhere here, too. And what about Christmas Ball? What if I would like to place
it in this area like here. So cute berries over there. So we create this, like, shape of the circle here. If you want, you can just ablgate the color
layer a few times. You can go and grab note. It's a side. What are
you gonna keep here? We have our teddy bear. It's the one that we are painting in one of
my last classes. L it. Color layer here? What about a star?
Mm, very good. And one more color layer? Actually, it's a sketch. It shouldn't be color layer. It should be sketch layer. So be careful. I made a
mistake, tiny mistake. So later we will rename it. Let me see. What about snowman? We can add cute snowmen here. And in areas where we have
some interfering object, just remove so
overlapping like that. Okay, cool, very cute. And then let's just merge all our elements together
and write sketch. Likes it. So also, you can try experiment and see
which style you like more. Okay, that's our first sketch. We also can keep playing and maybe create some
other variations. Okay, my lovely students, so I was playing with
some composition rules with arranging elements in the most beautiful
and pleasant way. And now let me show
you what I have. I created three
different sketches, and then I'll choose
the one that I like, and I'll start adding
colors to this sketch. So this is the first one
that we created together. Then I was trying to make
it like in a fun way. I was playing with
and experimenting, and this is our Merry
Christmas sketch. The next one, and I think that's pretty lovely when we want to create a little bit
playful postcards and one more is this one. Merry Christmas. Here I played
with the shapes and forms, and I like this one
the most, I think. So for our coloring part, I'm going to use this sketch. And if you're ready, let's
jump into our next class.
6. Final Project: Painting Process: Now we are ready to jump
into painting process. That's what we were waiting for. So use the brushes that I
provided Amaze freebies, all native procrete brushes, or your own tools that
you would like to use. Don't forget to
paint on the layers that are under paper
texture group. And let's not wait, and I will show you
everything right now. Okay, so we are ready to
jump to painting process. And I decided to use more or
less limited color palette. At least not so many colors. So I will use the colors as our main colors for
O days illustration. Let's start with teddy bear. I will grab the beige color, and let's just go and
grab Bdarqlor edges. I'm on color layer, and let's just add some
color to our teddy bear. Here, I will show you a very
interesting way how you can change the color of some particular body
parts because as you see, everything is orange brown, light brown, not orange. Okay, cool. Now, let's see what else
has the same color. I think the star,
because this is gingerbread star is
also pretty light, maybe a little bit
lighter than the bear. So I will also add this color. Our first step will be just filling our object with
some special colors. Like I said, if you
want to keep a vintage, we tend to use a little bit muted color
and not too vibrant. Like it. We don't have the same colors maybe to the box
of the gift, also. I will make it a
little bit yellowish. I try not to add any
color to ribbon, but even if you have
overlapping, it's okay. Okay, cool. That's it. For this part now let's
go to the brown color. And we have pine cone pine tree. What Seed? Pine tree cone? How to call it in English. I don't really know,
so sorry for that. Pine tree acorn.
Definitely I need to see what's the name. Duck. So if you press
lighter or harder, you see the color
will be lighter. That's what I'm trying to do. I don't want our
illustration to be too dark. Do we have any more
brown colors probably here to this berry part? I think we need brown Okay. And now, green color. We need to add the
same pale beige color to this Christmas tree wreath
on Christmas tree node. Maybe I will make
it less saturated. Lex. Remove lappins Node
free hand. Be careful. Select this node, L, and then go to curves
and play with intensity. I think when it's less
intense, it's better. Then what else? Green color for the pine trees. Probably even a
little bit darker. So for the edges will
use another brush. Because you see the
pine tree needles are a little bit too sharp, so you need to use another brush because this brush doesn't really suit for this A Okay. Wow, look at the colors. I think they're very, very nice. Then let's create one Mulabf. Also name it color. Now I want to use oriental
dry brush, same color. And here maybe a
little bit bigger. Try to add those needles. There's actually already
some shading process, but I just cannot just
leave it not finished. So I just go above and just add those needles little by little. See, the texture is super cool. If you overlap with our
node, we need to remove it. Like and spark Hmm. Great. Keep it this way, merge together with
our main color. And here, you see, we have a ribbon for the nose, so I also remove
the overlappings. Okay. Now let's go to the red color. Put arqaiclor edges.
Ding ding, dt. Try not to lift your apple
pencil from the green. Don toon ton ton
ton ton Like that. Now we have Christmas note. Here is a blender. We
can use B perfect color small because I think it's very good small for the
blend in small details. Like said. Let's come back and
add some colour. And a ribbon here.
Ding ding ding. And the last last
part, this ribbon. Max. Blending, Tinting ting. Okay. Now eras overlapping
here on my part. Don d, d Okay. So now I wait a
second this part. I will go with
almost white color, maybe a little bit grayish. Don't forget to blend. Yep. And also, this
part also supposed to be a little bit grayish. So here on those two examples, I will show you the ways how
you can change the color. So the first one, we will create one Mularbf and we will
write color again. So it's a new layer. We
have the same brush. Remember, it's semi transparent. So when we draw above, the color is still visible
but not fully visible. So we are a little
bit worried that the color of the cookie will
go through our blue pigment. And in this case, we
have one solution. So let's just fill
it with a color, and I will show you. Here. So we duplicate this color
with the gray color. So when we duplicate it, the color became less transparent, and
that's what we needed. That's without blue color, that's with blue color. You need to create
one molar above, grab another color and draw on a new layer that is
above our main layer. Then if you want to
reduce the transparency of the layer because brush
is semi transparent. We need to simply
duplicate the layer and then merge two layers together. Then when you are
satisfied with everything, we will merge the layer of gingerbread cookie together
with our main layer. Okay, now another option. We are on the layer where
we have the main color, and then if I want to change the color of the
face of the bear, I will go grab free hand, and then I select the area. Then I will go to
hue saturation and brightness and I will increase the brightness lower
the saturation. Now the face of teddy
bear is less transparent. Now the face of teddy
bear has another color. Like that. Now I will do same with ears. You see here we have the
shape of heart and obviously, I want to make it a
little bit different. I selected the shape of heart, then I press and
I want to select the second ear because two
ears will have the same color. I select the second
ear and I press head, and then we go to hill
saturation and brightness, increase the brightness, maybe a little bit
increase saturation, and no choose the
colors that you like. I think this lovely pink
color will be very nice. So that in and then
we can do with head. Select this part of
the head and press. Then hue saturation brightness,
increase the brightness, lower the saturation, and maybe you can make it
a little bit bluish. Would be fine, I think.
Not too saturated. Let's see which color
will be nice. Max. And now let's add on
top of this layer, let's add another layer, dark blue, blue, dark
quotic color edges, and I just want to
add color of ice. So if I want to
have darker color, I just paint twice and
about the nose brown color. Then, adding first layer of
color procedure is done. Let's go and add some sheets.
7. Final Project: Adding Shades: Had. Okay, so we chose bovi
color background brush, and then we are on a layer
where we have shades. Let's just duplicate it. And then let's go to a little bit darker shade, same brush. I just want to show tiny
bit just by light tapping, tiny bit of shades on a bear on this lovely star
gingerbread star. Also same here with the gift. Do, if you don't like something, go grab one nitrous stains brush and blender and just
blend a little bit. Same here. Thing. Okay, wonderful. Now I want
to go with reddish color, and I just want to exaggerate
in some areas the color. This brush is pretty big, so try to control the opacit the size of the brush,
not the opacity. Here. Bar Berries,
ting, ting ting. If you can go beyond the color. For example, we have
red color here, but we also can paint on
the fur of teddy bear. I forgot about the head. So let's just do the same. Let's come back,
go to color layer. Then free hand, select head and then use saturation and brightness and freeze the
brightness saturation. Let's find red color. Do you like it? Let's come back to
the shading layer and add tiny bit of shades here. Let's see what else do we need? I think it's already good. So keep it this way. T tinting. And now let's duplicate
shading layer one more time, go to another layer
of the shades. I think I want to
change the brush to Blue opal. Same red color. And here I just want to show the shade and shade
at the ribbon. And also in areas where two objects are
next to each other, or maybe where they hidden from the source of
the light also, we're going to have more shades. For example, here, we're
going to have shadow, shadow here and here. And again, you don't
need to be too accurate. Even if you're
shading will not be exactly the same as it should
be, it doesn't matter. The most important is to
create the atmosphere. Like sand. Then brownish color. Oh, too bright. I think light brown will
be fine for this. Okay. And I forgot about berries. Let's come back
to the red color. In some parts, if you think
that the lines are too sharp, you can just blant tiny bit. I'm gonna have some shade here. Like that. Maybe something here. And let's see what
about our cookie? Be careful. Try not to
touch like this blue color. And also, you can have some sharp lines. I
think it's also fine. And it's a little bit, like, a playful elements
to our illustration. Likes that. And let's
see Teddy Bear. From the ribbon, too. And armpits. Let's
see where else. Shadow from this side because
left side is in a shadow. Like that. I like it. Some shadow. Let's see. I think that's it.
For the shading part. What about this
almost blue color? Almost almost white.
A little bit blue. Also, you might add
more shades here, too. A little bit. I think it's fine. And in these areas, so where we have our blue color because it's supposed to be
some kind of, like, food. And when we add
additional elements, they cast a shadow. And because they are not flat, we need to show this volume. Mm hmm. I think that's amazing. Maybe we can add a
little bit of pinkede to Bar's face like the
shadow from the ribbon, some kind of reflection. And what about an
actual pink color? Here. I can add some shadows here too, and blend tiny bit. I think in these areas
like those ornament, I can decorate with pretty
bright yellow color, Blue oriental dry brush. Okay, I want to create
one more layer above. And I want to show this
bright, gold color. Ding ding ding ding. Like that. Okay, you merge
together with the main color. So and I forgot about this pine tree seed,
shade, multiply. But dark watercolor edges brush. And I think I want to show
some of the dark lines. So here we have a combination of light side and dark side. So I just need to alter
them. Dark eight. If you wanted to make it softer, just blend some of the areas. You don't need to
be too detailed, L. And about the Christmas tree, like, to the needles, we already added some shades
a little bit earlier. And now let's just
add the shades from the objects to the
surface of the paper. So I grab this pale beige color, and then let's switch to opal brush because this brush
is a little bit lighter. Let's show the shadow. So again, objects are not just laying or
floating in the air. They're actually
laying on the paper. Maybe a little bit shade here. And here. I think
with this shade, it looks even better. Was it. Tinting ting ting. So if you want,
you can exaggerate the shade by duplicating, but I don't really
want to do it. So for me, one time is enough. And let's jump into final final part
where we're going to add some splitters and
we will age the paper.
8. Final Project: Adding Splatters: A it's almost the
end of a class, and now it's time to add some
splatters and lovely quad. So we will add those
details little by little, step by step, and of course, we will not forget
about vintage texture. That will help us to add some vintage wipes
to our postcard. So I hope you are
ready to do that. Final touches. So what I did
is I created two layers, splatters and I changed
blendlar mode to multiply. And age vapor and also
blend layer mode, I switched to multiply. So about splatters, I decided to grab brownish color, tiny bit. Bull up this lazzi brush. Let's just add it
somewhere here. Relax. Try to avoid
so many splatters. So if you think they
look a little bit unnatural, just erase them. I think adding the splatters
to paper would look good. Also some papers here. Digram if it's too much, like I said, just erase it. So that's for the first part. And then let's go
to and if you want, you still can play, and maybe you can have linar
burn or even color burn. Depending on what you like more. I still multiply, H paper, and then I will go with
six big compressed brush, and I will go to dark
brown color here. And don't worry. It's not
that scary as you'd think. They just want to show the
edge lines here. Like that. And then we need to play with blending layer modes.
You see what you can do. You can just use color
burn and you don't see an actual pencil, but you see that the edges
are very, very beautiful. They are so saturated
and it really creates this authentic feeling
of, like, old style. That's the first
style color burn, and it just refers
to those paintings. And you can keep experimenting,
see what you like more. If you want to add d Hard
light is also lovely. Brush can help you
to get this feeling, but let me show you
what I will do next. You experiment, see
what you like more. I will go to color burn. I might just lower the
opacity tiny bit till 75%. And now look what I do. I just go to the lower layer under all of the
layers that we have. I go and switch blending
layer mode to multiply and I will rename it and I will
write aged background. Now look what I will do. I will switch brush to
oriental dry brush, and I will move all the way up. And now you play with blending layer mode and see
which one you like more. Hard light is lovely, but here, in this case, you will need to
lower the opacity. Another thing what you
can do if you want, you also can play above of
everything, all the layers. But in this case, it will
affect also our painting. Now, I want to keep
it underneath, like I said, let me
find my light here. Linear light, and I will lower
the opacity till 30, 40%. And here, if you
see that some of the brush strokes are a
little bit too strange, I just blend those parts. Yep. That's it. That's the way how
you age the paper. N. And we have Merry
Christmas headline. We have this very
