1. Introduction ns: Welcome to the White voyage. If you are new to my courses, thank you for joining. And if you took my wind one-on-one course, it's
great to have you back. This course will deepen your
knowledge on Spanish wines. And with that, you
will be able to enjoy outstanding wines without
breaking the bank. Spanish wines are hard to
beat when it comes to value. And I'm not just talking
about red and white know, also sparkling dessert
wines and more. So get ready because
we are about to embark on a voyage to one of the most fascinating and delicious white
regions of the world, being vanitas. I spent here.
2. Let’s travel to Spain ns: I'm so glad you decided to join this course
and still happy. I get to share
with you all about my favorite wine country, Spain. I will start off by saying
that Spain has a very, very special place in my heart. This is the country where my
wind journey actually began. I fell in love with wine
while living in Barcelona. I took my first course
there and have been passionate about this fermented
grape juice ever since. So I hope you
enjoyed this course as much as I enjoyed
putting it together. And please make sure you
download all the resources. Bowman sentence, let's begin.
3. History ns: The process of
winemaking arrived to the region that we now know as Spain with the Phoenicians. And this was around a
thousand before Christ. Then the Romans took over
the region and winemaking continued to flourish and actually expanded
throughout the region. Then in the eighth century, the wars occupied the region, which costs a general
decline in wine production. It was a decline, but it didn't
entirely disappeared. This is because the wars allow the wine to continue
being produced. Specifically though for religious purposes,
like communion. Then came the 12th
century. With it. This is the time
of the crusades. And this was the recapturing of traditionally Christian
territory from the morse. After the Easter, wine production started
to get back on its track. Spanish wine production
and exploitation continued growing throughout
the 17th and 18th century. But the big breakthrough came
in the mid 19th century. Around this time, a plague
appeared in Europe. The lock Sarah, this plate was responsible for
almost destroying all of European vineyards. The plague hit first
and France and has the wine industry in
France started crippling. Many renowned wine makers started making
their way to Spain, particularly to the
region of real. In the North. They were looking for
new opportunities. And as they moved, they also brought with them invaluable knowledge and more advanced
wine-making techniques. This improved the quality
of Spanish wine and set them on the road to become one of the finest in the world. Now, the plate, the locks
or it eventually did reach Spain and it was
devastating to many wine regions. But it advanced at a slower pace than it did in
other European countries. And luckily, by the time
it was reaching its peak, the remedy to the
plague was found. But just when things deemed a bit brighter for
Spanish wine making, a civil war broke out that
lasted from 1936 to 1939, followed by World War II. The consequences of the Civil
War were truly devastating. Thousands died and disappeared, and a military
dictatorship was put in place that lasted 36 years. Many vineyards and
wineries were both neglected and destroyed
during this time. Then World War II, King. And that closed
off the market for exports, worsening
the situation. Things started to become
more stable in the 50s. And progress was being made with new wineries
being founded. And the quality of
the wine started to improve and demand
started to grow. In 1975, the country
transition to a democracy. Then 1986, it was accepted
to the European Union. The period of modernization and growth for Spanish wine
had officially begun.
4. Geography & Climate ns: Now that you know some of the most important details about the history of
winemaking in Spain. Let's discuss the geography
and climate of the region. In the world of wine, geography and climate
is everything. This is because it has a direct
influence on the product. You then holding your glass. That is what terroir
is all about. Terroir refers to
all the factors that contribute to the
characteristics of a line. This includes the location, climate, altitude,
soil, and so on. Spain is located in
the Iberian Peninsula. In Southern Europe. It has an area of 505,990
square kilometers. The country is surrounded by both the Atlantic Ocean
and the Mediterranean Sea, where you can also find several Spanish
islands like an IDS. One subtle thing, my famous
E visa and many more. By the way, did you know these
islands also produce one? And it's excellent wine, but that's something that
we're going to look at later. Spain is home to some
important mountain ranges, like the purine score to the data concavity
and many, many more. The highest point in Spain
is actually not in there. But in one of the
islands that they, they volcano in the
island of G9, yes. One of the most important
geographical features of the country is
the MiSeq does. And this is a vast
plateau that extends over 210 square kilometers and has an average elevation
of 660 meters, with the capital of the country, Madrid at its center. Now, let's talk
about the rivers. There are so many, but the major ones are Duetto, fabulous, Well,
Deanna and menial. When it comes to climate, Spain is the most
climatically diverse country in all of Europe. For the most part, it
has five climatic zones. We won't go into all of them. But essentially, Spain has hot summers and cold
winters inland, and mild summers and cool
winters on the coast. So if you're planning
a trip to Spain, make sure you check the
climate of the region where you're traveling to because
they're not all the same. Spain is a country with a huge biodiverse city
covered in mountains, rivers, with diverse climates
and also diverse soils. And all of these factors contribute to the uniqueness
of Spanish wines.
5. Vineyards ns: I added a section specifically on Vineyards
because I think it's quite fascinating that Spain is the country with the most
vineyards in the world. It has 969 thousand
hectares of vineyards. This is around 13% of all the land under
vine in the world. Every single one of the 17 autonomous communities
of Spain produces wine. And the beauty of
this is that so many of these vineyards
are seriously old. I mean, 300 years old.
6. Spanish Wine Law ns: Now, before we dive
into the main regions, let's learn about how
wind is regulated in Spain and what the label can
tell us about the whites. There are five
classifications for Spanish. One, Let's start with the
first one, V naught Vanessa. This is your basic
everyday table wine. It is the windup by law
has less restrictions. It only has to be made
from Spanish grapes. And it's not a wine that you will easily find
outside of Spain. Venus, they let the era. This translates to
wind of the land. And this classification needs
to follow some rules on the specific region without
the rules being too strict. In this classification,
the name of the grape can be
printed on the lake. Then I'm going to
see younger DO. And this is what we will
actually be focusing on. The most ominous Youngevity DO translates to
denomination of origin. Most Spanish wines fall
under this category, and you will see it
noted on the label. In order for a wind to be
classified as D0 phenomena, can the one has to comply
with strict regulations? Mina, DOC or deal killer. This translates to denomination
of origin classified. It is the highest classification
for Spanish wines. And as of now, only two regions have
this classification. But he owed act and to be a
pre-lab or a real Hawaii, the producers from that
region need to follow very strict regulations and adhere to historic traditions. The last classification
as V naught the BP. This classification is
given to a wine that has been carefully produced and
comes from a single vineyard. The ones that I want
you to remember are, DO denomination of origin, DOC, a denomination of
origin classify and VP? Because these are the ones
that you will more than likely find in restaurants
and wine shops. Also, because if you see one
of these classifications, you can already rest
assured that the wine is following a set of guidelines
to guarantee its quality. Another very important factor
in Spanish wine is aging. Aging is found on
many of the labels, mainly from Johan and
rebate other dwell. And this is what you will read on the label and what it means. Calling. Covid in
English means young. So as the word says it, these are young
wines that more than likely did not spend a lot
of time in oak barrel. The style of these winds will therefore be more
on the fruity site. Is this a wine to drink not
to keep for too long periods? If it's directly
on-site and it must be aged athletes for 24 months. Of those 24 months, six must have been
spent in oak barrels. If it's a white or
rosy, could answer. It must be eight for 18 months, out of which six
were in Oak Barrel. These winds will have more body and structure
and are the perfect, high-quality everyday
drinking wine. What I said about red wines that are classified as my setup, I must be aged for
at least 36 months, out of which 12 will
be spent in barrels, and the rest in the bottom. Light and Rosales that
are labeled, as was said, about our aged for 24 months with six
months in the barrel. That I said my label is
used for wine produced with the best grapes and
in the best vintages, then to just means years. They are also often age to longer than what the
classification requires. These are serious, complex and elegant winds with a nice
balance of fruitiness. And OK, the landless
sediment to be labeled S and granular set of red wines must be aged for at least six months, out of which at least 18
months or spent in barrels. White ground, what I
said about must be aged at least 48 months out of which
six months rent variance. Instead of us, are not
produced every year. They are only made in years with exceptional growing
seasons and with the best quality of
grapes are harvested. These are the most complex winds in the Spanish market and are also aged usually for longer than what the
classification requires. Several lines are
elegant, well-balanced, and how the complexity
of aromas and flavors that continue evolving. These are special lines in d. Now you don't have to remember all the details
of each category. But I do encourage
you to remember the order so that when you're purchasing
a bottle of wine, you know how long it's been
aged for approximately. This will help you
to better understand the style of wine you're
ordering or purchasing. The asset, for example, will taste and feel very
different from a grand. But I said there is not
a good one or a bad one. It's just a matter of styles and what your preferences at
that specific moment. But I'll share with you this. Some Spanish wines
can age for decades, only improving with time.
7. Spanish Grape Varieties ns: Thing is also one of
the countries with the largest amount of
indigenous grape varieties. These are varieties that
are native to the region. Other varieties,
Cabernet, Sauvignon, merlot, shorter names, so on, are also grown here. However, most Spanish
whites are produced with indigenous varieties
that allow them to showcase their diversity
and uniqueness. We will learn about these
varieties in the next chapters. As we studied the different
regions of Spain.
8. Main Wine Regions ns: As we've learned
throughout this course, Spain is a country with a
long history of winemaking. The route pretty much it's entire territory,
including the islands. It's not surprised
that it is home to 69 major wine regions. Spain has a wonderful way
of blending tradition with innovation to produce
outstanding whites. But I've carried the
best of both worlds. The next chapters,
we will be exploring Spain's main
denomination of origin. These deals are found within
autonomous regions in Spain. Some of them have
even ten deals. Now, we won't be
discussing all of them. Before we get started. I want to give you some examples here that ECS
and autonomy, this region. And three as by
shall deal is one of the deals found within here. Okay? Now let's get started.
9. Rioja ns: Johan, you've probably heard
or read this name before. Viola is both an autonomous
region of Spain and also one of its most
well-known binary agents. As I mentioned a
few chapters back, during the Philips or a plate, many French winemakers
migrated to Spain, particularly to this region. They brought a lot of knowledge and modern winemaking practises. And their influence
was a before and after for the region
and for all Spain. You'll face in the
North Central Spain, by the upper EBITDA river. Hundreds of wineries have their vineyards
close to the river. The area is divided
into three sub areas. Real and real hot audience. Some wine bottles will specify the region of
fuel, how they are from. Now, each area
produces wines with distinct characteristics
that come from the different soils
that each region has. One thing in common, though, real Hawaiians are predominantly produced with the
grape varietals, then this is the king of
red grapes and Spain. Now, this doesn't mean that
it's the only grid variety. In fact, most wines from
the region or a blend. However, temporal needle is
the predominant variety, are usually medium to full body. These are big, complex
ones with earth, the leather and
black cherry aromas. They tend to have
very high tannins and very high acidity, which means they
can age very well. The wine classification
of yoga is slightly different from the regular
Spanish wine classification. Real Hawaiian bylaw, age longer than in other
regions of Spain, the US oak barrels. And this is very important in the denomination
because it gives them the characteristics
and the uniqueness they are so well-known for. The aging period determines the classification of the
wine and therefore the style. If the wine ages
for a short period, it will be younger
and fruit ear. If it spends more
time and then it will have more structure,
more aromas. The value of wines from
your cup is unbeatable. You can buy an outstanding
good I said about wine, and this is the highest
classification, remember, without
breaking the bank. But it also produces
lines or real Hubble. And these are small
production wines made from the grape variety
view that you will have. Blanco can be alive, crisp line with citrus
aromas or a medium body, a little bit more complex
with tropical erroneous. It really depends on
whether the wind was aged or not and whether it's
spent time in barrow or not, know how to read a bottle of. The classification
will be real high DOC, which is the denomination
of origin value fit that. This is one of the
two regions in Spain. To help this, you will therefore see written
real high DOC. You might also see in
the label or audience. And remember, that
only refers to the different areas within we'll have where the
wind was produced. It will also state the agent
classification and it is asphalt from the least
to the most common. The answer. But I said about engram. If you notice it's not
written in the bottle, then it's probably a
young wine holding. Real hub produces some of the
best value Spanish wines. And to be honest, I think one of the best value of
wines in the world. So make sure you have
some lines from people.
10. Castilla y Leon ns: We are in the
autonomous region of the figure ilium
in northern Spain. As with the rest of Spain, winemaking here has
a long history. And it proof of it
is that in 1972, during the time of harvest, some blind growers and covered
a mosaic from Roman times. The mosaic measured
60 square meters and it had images
on your Baptist, the Roman god of wine. The first denomination of origin from this region that we
are going to look at. It is also the most important
one and well-known. This is Rivera. They dwell. Be better than dwell. Deal. Along with a real harm is one of Spain's
most important deals. Pretty better than
Duetto translates to river bank of the Duetto. And that is because the
wineries and vineyards are located at the
banks of the river. This area produces
wine at some of the highest elevations
of all of Europe, with vines content at an
altitude of up to 850 meters. Something that I find really
fascinating about the way that they do better is the
diversity of its soils. It has 32 types of soil. So as you can
imagine, the winds, although they are produced
from the same variety, are different and unique. The use of oak barrel and the region is also
very important. Most of the lines are rare, but they also
produce some roses. The main variety here is also the indigenous grape
variety, intermediate. Remember, then put a needle. It's the king of Spanish
grape varieties. But here it goes by a
few different names. For example, being
buried by being female in comparison to pimp. But I knew from the ones from preventive and Duetto tend
to have a deeper color, deeper tannins, more
intense black fruit, character, fuller body, and with a higher
level of alcohol. Now how would you read a pretty better than
wine on the bottom? So it will say the
classification rebate oven. And it might also state the agent classification
in this case go session. Or the second deal we're going
to look at from the region of dossier Leon is BSO DO
the denomination of origin, but or yet so it's located in the Northeast of the
region of garcia indium, specifically in the
province of Leon. It borders which is an
autonomous region in the post. So although be enslave inland, it is between the
coast and inland. They produce both
red and white wines, but they're mainly well-known
for a spectacular red wine. One of my favorites from
the grape variety, man Sia. These wines are
very different from those of Rio and
rebelled and dwell. In comparison. These winds are lighter body and with more Redford
characteristics. And they also don't go through
the long aging process. Does yoga and be
better than Duetto do? Msl wines from BSO are
comparable to a peanut moire. So we can call it the
Spanish peanut anymore. Now, let's move on to
another autonomous region. And their deals.
11. 5 stars: Hello. I just wanted to
take a quick moment to check how the class
is going for you. Recently, online video
platforms made some changes to the review system and they're prompting people earlier for it. This can happen even a few minutes after you just
started the course. And of course, I know it's
hard to know so early on whether you should give
the class a five-star rating. And that's why I
created this video. To give you a heads-up that you will be prompted
to leave a review. I hope you're enjoying
this white course and that it is a
five-star course for you. That would make me so happy. For some of you, it might
not be a five-star course. And I want to take this moment to ask you how I can improve. I'm going to be
spending some time in the next few months
working on it. So please send me a
direct message with your thoughts and
ideas, your feedback. Trust me, is very
important to me. I will work my hardest
to make sure that I make those changes or
updates as soon as possible. Please feel free to leave an honest review and I
would really appreciate it if you write a few
sentences and not just click one through
five and the stars, I can't wait to hear feedback
and you read your reviews. Okay, let's continue
exploring wine.
12. Navarra DO ns: Have you heard of
the famous running of the bulls in Spain? Well, it takes place
in the city of bumps, which is the capital of the autonomous region of
Nevada in northern Spain. Before we discuss the region, I want to highly recommend you to visit if
you haven't been. It's a unique region
that embraces traditions and has
so much to offer. Hardy delicious food. Picturesque towns or
just countryside, and of course, grade winds. Okay, now, let's
look at the wine. The wine region is located somewhat close to real
and Roberto and doable. However, on an
international level, it's not as well-known. And I hope this changes
because their reality is that the wind from Nevada
are outstanding. Now that I have a
diverse geography and several features
that bring a lot of diversity to
the different wine producing areas
within the region. These features
include the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean
in the Northwest, the pyramids mountain
range in the Northeast, and the editor River. Due to this diversity, when it comes to wine, the region is
divided into fights. You don't have to
memorize the substance, but I do want to
mention them for you. By the stadium. And Ribera Baca. Again, you don't have to
memorize or even remember this, but just please remember Nevada. Now let's discuss the ones. As mentioned before. Because of its vast topography
and micro-climates, the region produces a
broad variety of styles. Some points, you can
find crisp white, aromatic row space,
which is by the way, a style that they're
very well-known for. Light bodied reds and
earthy, fuller body rates. The production,
though, is mainly centered around
Rosie and red ones. Traditionally, you will find red wines from the indigenous
grape varieties, them, but I'm also got matcha, white lines from the
grape varieties, beautiful and match up an ANCA. However, the region also produces wines from
other varieties. Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot,
Pinot, Chardonnay, and more. Now, I know what
you're thinking. How am I going to pick
a line from Nevada? I didn't really know what
it's going to taste like. Well, on average, most reds
tend to have high acidity. So this will mean that
they will feel fresh, not heavy in the mouth. And another thing that I
suggest is pretty easy to check the label and to read whether
they spent time on or not. If the one spend time on OK, you can expect it to
have more complexity. If it did not spend any time. I know because then it's
probably a younger one. It will have more of a
bright red fruit aroma and flavor profile. In summary, nevada offers a wide range of
remarkable wines, and I highly recommend you try them how to read a bottle of Nevada while the classification
is not bad deal. So Navarro denomination
of origin, and it will more than likely mentioned the grape
variety that was used to produce the
wanting and also whether it's spent any
time on OK or not.
14. Galicia ns: We are going to jump all the way to the
northwest corner of Spain, north of Portugal, to the
region known as green stain. And this is then, if you look at photos, you will probably
think you are looking at images from
Ireland or Scotland. This region is just
breathtakingly beautiful with all
its lush greenery. It's on the coast by
the Atlantic Ocean with many rivers and estuaries called that cut through
the rolling hills. Some of the best
fish and seafood, if not the best,
in all of Spain, can be found here. The lines of spades, finest white wines are
produced in Dionysia. You can also find
exceptional red lines. As with the rest of the regions, the line history dates back
to the time of the Romans. And even further back. It's an area of old vineyards
with many hanging on the clips of the hills
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. And the large number of
indigenous varieties responsible for the production of their outstanding wines. The main white grape
variety is burning. This variety can produce
different styles of wine, but they will usually be
high in acidity with a touch of solemnity and aromas of
citrus and stone fruit. They can be light
or medium bodied. Other common white grape
varieties of the area are, which produces wines
that are fooled or body than anybody knew
that I shall do that. This also is a
grade that produces puller bodied wines
and low data. The most common red
grape variety of means, which is the same grape
variety that we looked at when we spoke about BSL
deal, investigate Leon. And while men see I just loved widespread and see
how they are fresh, lighter to medium bodied with red fruit aromas and a bit of spice and herbal notes to them. Okay, So these are the styles of wines that
you can find in the ECF. Now, we're going
to take a look at the main denomination of
origin within the ECF. And remember, this
is where you will actually see written
on the bottle. It will not say Galicia. It will give you the different
deals with Indonesia and we'll take a look at
the main ones deal. This is the most well-known deal of the region of gunfire. And it's divided into
five sub regions that spring up along the
coast within the Atlantic. I will mention the
sub-regions so that you are familiar with them if you
read them in the box. But there is no need for
you to memorize them. The Beta and Omega
by lopsidedness, Sotomayor, oral side and
come down a little tear. The lines from
various ****** are usually based on the budding of variety and can be easy drinking with all the
characteristics of the variety. Like high acidity, minerality, freshness, citrus
aromas, and so on. Some are also aged in oak. And this brings a
layer of complexity, structure, aromas, and
flavors to the wine. In some of the sub-regions, the Ivan email grape is blended with some of the other
indigenous varieties, producing a wine with a broader range of
aromas and flavors. A small amount of red line is also produced in
this region from the grape variety. Men CEA. Yes. We made a deal, is a deal denomination of origin located to the east of
various patients deal. It also has a large
Atlantic Ocean influence, but it's slightly warmer
than via spacious. Both white and red wines
are produced here, but mainly white wines from
the grapefruit I shall do. This grade is blended
with other varieties. The winds will be
fuller body than the wines from VS
by the beta factor. Do. This region has a dramatic landscape with terrorists old binds on
extremely steep slopes. The area produces both
white and red wines, but it's mainly known for
their red wines from main. Remember, this is the
same great producing spectacular lions in the
denomination of origin. Although BSO is not in the autonomous region of
gunny, it borders it. But in comparison to men
CIA from BSL, rebate, Asakura tends to
produce red wines that are a bit lighter and
fruit easier than via. These are high-quality wines. Deal. This region is the eastern most
Appalachian, then ECM. So the furthest inland and
furthest from the ocean, by the orders has
become very well-known for white wine of the
grape variety, go video. The ones are Feste and fresh
with a medium body and the wrongness of citrus and
some are also aged in oak. And once h denote they produce wife that
our folder body and richer also produces
red wines from Mencius. These tend to have more body than the ones from
the beta effect that I know I just
gave you a lot of information on the
region of about ECF. And I don't want you
to feel overwhelmed, but I do want you
to try these lines because I am sure
you will love them. Important to remember that
Lisa is the Autonomous Region. And VS, by the fact that
these are all the deals, some of the deals within
the region of gunny sacks. So what you will see
in the bottom will always be the name of the DAO, the denomination of origin.
15. Cataluna ns: When it comes to
governmental, yeah. I don't even know
where to start. Mainly because as I mentioned, Spanish lines, I could
say are my favorite. Now within Spain, I have
my favorite region. And this is definitely, I lived in Barcelona, which is the capital
of California. And I'm still very much
connected to the region. So yes, maybe I am being
a little bit biased. But the reality is
that that bell and winds are just outstanding. And so diapers is located in north-eastern Spain on
the Mediterranean Sea, and then borders and Dora
and friends to the north. The production of
wine in the region, as with the rest of
Spain, dates way back. In fact, you can find ruins from the Roman times that show
the process of fermentation, one production and even storage. Since then that the
Lumiere has been an important center for
commerce and trade. The areas heavily influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and three major
topographical features, which are the pyramids
mountain range, the mountain range of the cord, and the central lung depression. The northeastern
corner of it also receives the influence of
the thymine dimer wins. These are strong dry winds
coming from the north. Not only does the
region have the sea, many mountain ranges with different altitudes and
wins influencing it. It also has a large diversity of soils and
indigenous varieties. And all of these factors
contribute to the uniqueness and beauty of why I'm
focusing on the wine. But I want to make sure I also mentioned that as a region, Apollonia has so much more
to offer than just fine, including some Spain's
most beautiful beaches. Picture as historical towns. Award-winning restaurants that showcase traditional
and innovative. Got the lung cuisine architecture
that blows your mind. Their own language. Renowned artists
that have shaped the trajectory of
art like that would be a great football
or soccer team. And so much more. I promise I don't work
for the data alone yet. Tourism office. I just encourage you to
go now that two lines, FMEA has 12 denominations
of origin, 12th deals. We won't look at all of them, but we will focus on fight. But he owed at one sun benefits. In front of that. I started with video that video at the beginning of the course when we were
learning about Spanish law, I mentioned that there
are two regions in the bank that hold a
higher classification. One of them is real hub, and the other one is video that the classification is denomination
of origin classified. However, for your app, instead of using a C, They use a queue because it got the one language that is the
correct way of writing it. The lines are produced in a tiny region surrounded
by mountains. Rivers flowing through. The vineyards are planted at high altitude on
dramatic steep slopes, and they benefit from a
unique soil called leak. 95%. Production
is for red wines, primarily from grape
varieties like Matcha. But they also use other
varietals like Cabernet, Sauvignon, seraph,
Merleau for the blend. Now, what can you expect
from a few left plane? You can expect a dry
wine that has aged in oak and has high
minerality, high alcohol, high tannins, intense aromas, flavors of black fruit,
chocolates, and licorice. The wines from this
region tend to be a bit pricier than those from
other Spanish regions, as they are well-worth it. A guard, delicious, elegant, refined mind that age very well. Monsanto deal. Remember I mentioned to you that was surrounded by mountains. Well, essentially
everything that surrounds is considered
them on sun deal. As you can see, this is a very important
area for winemaking. Now, one son is the name
of the region steel, but also the name of
one of the mountain ranges and one of the
rivers located there. But you would add this
famous for its soil. But one son is also
famous for its soil. It has three types with liquid
and yet being one of them. And the other two are so long. And in terms of Tiran, this is the main distinction
really between the two. The type of soil. The ones from one son are
similar in style to those of figured out and are produced with the
same grape varieties. They tend to have a bit
less body than pre-lab, and also bid less expensive, whether it's a wine from
Europe or from son, You cannot go wrong
if you're looking for a deep, elegant wine. Do this is one of the
largest wine regions, covers a long strip of land between the C and the mountains, and therefore offers a lot of diversity when it comes to wine. You can find why rosy red and
of course, sparkling wine. Because this region is the birthplace of the sparkling
wine production in Spain. But we'll look at that later. Many grape varieties
are used here, with most of them
being indigenous. For example, the wife, Mac avail data shown below. And for the rats you
have some more match. But other varieties, Chardonnay, Cabernet, et cetera,
are also used. It's a bit difficult to pinpoint the characteristics of
a wife from Canvas. Because of the diversity
of the region, soils, varieties, and also
wine production styles. What I can tell you is that
the winemaker's here focus heavily on delivering wines of high-quality and great value. I invite you to explore
them in photograph. Do have you ever heard
of the cool stuff? But if not, this is
replacing that value in yet, but I recommend you put
on your bucket list. But most of Brahma is a coastal
region that stretches for about an hour from Barcelona all the way
to the French border. And it is absolutely stunning. It's full of medieval towns in land and traditional fishermen
villages on the coast, you'll find some
breathtaking cliffs overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea. Natural parks, stunning beaches, and smoke hopes with
crystal clear water. This is the hometown of the famous Spanish artist
side of a lot of bending. His me see, I'm missing the
Pinterest town of guy that gets the waste from this region have the denomination
of origin important that the region is
divided into sections. I can put it that way just
north of the region and bij. And for that which is
south of the region, most of the vineyards are over 30 years old and are
organic and biodynamic. The main influence in input, that is the thermal
panel, wings. These lens that the dominant
Donna are so strong that there are studies that
say that when they blow, they can cause depression and states of nervous excitement, but can also stimulate artistic genius and
the desire to work. So at least creative madness was due to the phenomenon
thumbnail wins. The ones of course,
are also influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and
the Pyrenees Mountains, which separates
Spain from France. Most of the wines
produced are red, but you can also find
some great white wines. The reds are produced from the varieties getting
Yan and got action. But other varieties
are also used, right and put that
tends to be medium to fuller body luscious
with bright black fruit, aromas and characteristics
like him for that. Usually medium body with aromas of stone fruit and a
touch of salinity. These wines are slowly
starting to become more available when shops and
restaurants outside of Spain, you can also find them online. I've done DO similar
to import that. This is one of those wine
regions that are slowly starting to receive the
attention they deserve. This deal is located the
furthest to the south of God. It's not directly on the
Mediterranean coast, but it feel very close to it
and receives its influence, is also influenced by a mountain range that runs
parallel to the coast. That translates to higher land. This is what it is. The vineyards are planted
at an altitude of between three hundred and fifty and five hundred
and fifty meters. These are some of
the highest vineyard is found in both FMEA. They produce great wines,
both red and white. However, their
flagship lines are white wines from the grape
variety that I'm not jumping. This length is so important to the region that in order
for it to be labeled data, I've got unnatural Blanca. It needs to pass through a series of quality
control tests. That natural Blanco wines tend to be medium to full body with aromas of stone fruit like peach and apricot
and Earthlike Dale. And they have intense
flavors and high alcohol. It's a wine that could be
compared to a sharpening, especially if the age is. And so for all of you, sharpen the lovers,
try some gum, natural Blanca from Fahrenheit.
16. Murcia ns: There are now on the
region that we're seeing. Here is in the
autonomous region, with its main city being
also called Morse. Here is the coastal region
on the Mediterranean, located in the South
East of Spain. It's a small area, but very popular with
tourists since it has some fantastic beaches and
stretches for many kilometers. And while the food,
as with all of Spain, it felt sending this small
region is well-known for deep, rich color red wines from
the variety Mona's today. By the way, this is the same grape variety that in France is known as move-in day. However, the variety is
indigenous to Spain. Minus trade winds are
big, bold, full body, powerful, rustic wines with high tannins and
aromas of black fruit. And these ones are
the perfect pairing for rich foods like lamb
veal for any dark meat. The most famous DO
of more CEA is whom? Media? V0.
17. Andalucia ns: Then the CIA in Southern Spain. Most of the things that people associate with Spain
are from this region. Andrea, flamenco
dancers and singers, bulls, that is all
Southern Spain. And the LWCF is an
autonomous region. And it is a very large one with some famous city
like Sydney Jagger, another interesting fact
about and then the CIA. It's the only area in
all of Europe that has both Mediterranean
and Atlantic coastline. This is the hottest and the
driest region of Spain. It has many important
mountain ranges. Rivers that flow into both the Atlantic and
the Mediterranean, as well as two
important currents of whence than Ivanka
and poignant there. And the Lucile is under
warranty rule from the 8th through the 15th
century, that's 800 years. And in terms of wine, this region is very
famous for one line, in particular, headaches
or an English sharing. This is a fortified
wine made from three indigenous white
grape varieties by luminal, it'll humans and most cafe. I just mentioned a term you might not be
very familiar with, and that's for to find mine. So fortified wine is a wine that's had a
distilled spirit, like brandy or cognac added to it during the
winemaking process. This is to boost its
alcohol content. This practice didn't
start because people just wanted wind
that had hired alcohol. It actually started before refrigeration was
available and S await for winemakers to preserve the wines and prevent them from
getting spoiled. Adding distilled
spirits to the winds, a trick and also provided
different styles. Here we are centuries
later with hideous. Of course, Hey, this
is just one style, afford a fine line. But this is the one
that we will be discussing since it's
the one producing them to see the entire
wine-making process of HEDIS is like nothing
you've ever heard of. They are produced using a unique and ancient
maturing method that has been passed
down for generations. It's an incredibly
elaborate process that is highly influenced
by the terroir, where the Leviathan and
plenty and the winds play an important role. And with aging and blending being at the
core of everything. For the purposes of this course, I won't go into the details
of the winemaking process, but I do encourage you
to research on your own. I can tell you that when I
learned the full process and then translate it
back to the price of a bottle of today
S are sharing. I was shocked. I still can't believe
that it is sold for so little lens should it be
sold for three times more? Okay, now, let's discuss the styles of
headaches or sherry. There are many
variations in color, style and level of sweetness. They can be very
dry to very sweet. I will go through the
styles now, but, you know, I put together a
document and it's in your resources section where you will find all of
this information. These are the seven types
of setups are shared. And remember, they
are all meet with white grape varieties
minus omega. The style of Macedonia
is produced only in the seaside town
assigned to the bottom. This is a dry wine with the salty sea spray quality
and notes of cameo. Female. The female style is a classic dry sherry wine with aromas and flavors and
notes of almonds. I'm on. This wine is Fuller and Hassan's amber color and
notes of roasted nuts, spice, and dry fruit. This wine can be dry or
have a touch of sweetness. Also, this line is
dark in appearance. It's full body and dense with
an intense nerdy character. They are also dry with
a hint of sweetness. They appear very nice. Ricard cheese. This is a complex wine aroma
similar to those of animals. And also it's a dry
and elegant way. Cream. Cream Sherry is
made by sweetening. And also baseline. The aromas and
flavors are of fig, chocolate, dry
fruits, roasted nuts. And there is a lighter version
of the style that's called pale Creek cherry, or Px. This wine is made exclusively from the bedroom
Jimenez great variety. It is air dry on maps in order
to concentrate the sugars. These are dark intends
to certain wines with robust flavors of race
and tophi and fit. Okay, there you have
all the styles and yet many styles and
many things to learn. But that's what this
course is about, providing you the information for you to explore these ones. When it comes to pairing, sharing wine with food, I have a great tip for you. It's the same and
it goes like this. If it swings a female, if it flies in a month, if it runs in.
18. The Islands ns: The islands, Spanish islands are known for their
beaches, water scores, coulds, rather than
nature, nightlife, food and more, but also
for their unique winds. The winds with a
deep sense of place. Spain has many islands, and by many, I mean over 60. Of course not all of
these islands are major islands and of course
not all of them produce wine. This chapter, I will
share with you details on the main wine producing
islands of Spain, the denomination of origin
you will find them under, as well as what to
expect from these ones. Let's start off with the ys
less or a lyric islands. These are on the Mediterranean
in eastern Spain. And you've probably
heard of them. My yoga, Minorca EB, forming. These islands enjoyed
Mediterranean weather and are heavily influenced by
the thermal panel wins. The two main
denominations of origin, the two deals of the lyric
islands are beneath felon. Do from the island of my job and blindly want TO also from
the island of my Georgia. You will find both red
and white wines from indigenous varieties
like Montenegro and died yet for the reds. But in fact blank
for the whites. You can expect
these wines to have a lower alcohol level with red fruit aromas and
flavors and high acidity. Now let's talk about
the E-flat scan ideas. Kennedy islands. This is an archipelago off the coast of
northwestern Africa. And it includes ten islands. A woman should all of them, just the ones that produce one. These are islands
that were created millions of years ago
by volcanic eruption, and they enjoy now a
subtropical weather. Another interesting fact about the islands is that
the blocks are plate. It never right? So you can find some of
the oldest binds here. The main wife varieties used in the islands are my
left CIA and we stand Blanco and the main reds
are negative and we stand. Now let's talk about the main
denominations of origin. The Cannery islands. Ys less gun ideas, DO, DO, DO, DO DO. The wines from the
Canary Islands are very unique and have a deep
sense of place and terroir. Everything about them. It's incredible. Their location, their
unique culture, their history, and of
course their tastes. The length from my lasagna, for example, the white ones, are aromatic with
notes of honey, citrus, and tropical fruit. And they can be very elegant. You stand naked or
produces some of the best red wine
since the region. These are juicy lines with
the wrongness of ref, fruit, peppers, licorice,
and a touch of spikes. So if you see a
bottle that says eat less Kannada CEO then
settled, they DO. Do matri, you give it a try. These are different wines. It's not the common wine
that you find every day, but they are becoming incredibly popular
for a good reason.
19. Cava & Spanish Sparkling Wine ns: There is so much to say about
Spanish sparkling wine. It has a fascinating history
and it is one of the best valued in the world that was first produced
in fact alone, yeah. Specifically in the
region of benefits, which we learned
about when we were discussing the deals
from Catalonia in the year 1870 to
just set created the first got wind
that lived in France. And there he learned the
art of making champagne. When the philosopher
a plague hit France, he decided to move
back to cut the Lumia, to produce sparkling wines with the same method
as champagne, but utilizing the local
indigenous varieties, Mac available, Shiloh. And the result was delicious and outstanding
and beyond excellent. This allowed the modern world to interact with the
traditional one, promoting the
production of a wine with a strong sense
of place and history. And gaba was born. It officially received
the name of gaba in 1959. Gaba, by the way, translates to seller or cave. And in 1972, it became a
denomination of origin. Started off in gotta pneumonia, specifically in the
region of Pentateuch. And until this day they
are the largest producers. However, the
denomination of origin, unlike the rest of
the deals in Spain, it is not specific to
this region by law, that can be produced in seven of the 17 autonomous
regions of the country. Like other sparkling wines,
including champagne. That way it's produced with different levels of sweetness. You can find a boundary
gaba or a very sweet gum. It's all up to
personal preference. One thing is for sure though, that is a premium sparkling
wine at the best value. You can find. Within there are
several classifications similar to still wines. You have. Gaba, gaba, get angry FERPA. But these are all the
classifications within the video. But you also have
a classification, Spanish sparkling
wine from a set of producers who
decided to place more emphasis on
winds that truly showcase the heart of
the region of benefits. And they formed
the classification separate from foul deal, that is known as P naught. Now, whether it's the
gaba or Aquafina, the history is remarkable. The traditions are so precent. The winemaking
process is difficult. The aging process is long. And these were delicious,
high-quality wines. And what is truly remarkable
is that you can find them fraction of the cost of other
high level sparkling wines. I highly recommend you start
stocking up on some gala or try several and see
what is your preference?
20. Understanding The Labels ns: Wine labels can be tricky. But now that you've
learned so much about Spanish wines and you know the main denomination of origin. I think it'll be much easier for you to understand what's on the label and to select the
one that you want to try. So let's look at a label. The name of the
line or the name of the vineyard will appear in either medium or large letters. And this will always
be in the front. The producer. This is
the name of the winery. The Appalachian. The Appalachian
that you will find for Spanish wines are DO, DO C or D or Q, Venus, they lacked the era
and Venus the Bible. Throughout this
course, we mainly focused on denomination
of origin, wines deal or denomination
of origin classified DOC. But both Venus and Venus, the paddle are excellent. They are not that easy to
find outside of Spain. So if you find one, I encourage you to try it. The vintage of the wing. This is the year the grapes are harvested for this
specific wine. The agent classification. We spoke about this at the
beginning of the course. And I want to make
sure I included here again the classification
from low to high is holding that he answer what I said
about gram per server. Again, you don't have to remember all the
details for each one, but I do encourage you
to remember the order from lowest to longest
period of aging. This will allow you to
better select the wine. And most importantly,
appreciated. Not all wine lists have. Okay, so those are the main elements that
you need to look at. However, what I highly
encourage you to do, if you can, is to just
read the full label. Sometimes the label will have so much information about
the history of a wine, the hands that produced it, especially with their
region like Spain, that is so full of history and tradition bottle that you hold in your hands
is full of stories. So I encourage you to explore those stories and make them a part of your wine experience.
21. Summary of Spanish Wines ns: I know we just went through
a lot of information. A lot of regions, names, denominations of
origins, styles of wine. So let's do a very quick recap. And don't worry about
memorizing all of this. I promise that the more
you consume these lines, the more familiar you
will be with the names, styles, and your
personal preference. But you'll have DOC, a famous Spanish red wine, very well-known further
along aging processes. The main great use for yoga
is temporary in nature. These are long lived whites. Do. Another famous Spanish red wine, also uses as a blend,
the grape variety. As real hard. These are long lived wines that actually compete
with each other. Taste them together to see
what your preferences. The ESM V0, spectacular red
wine from the grape variety, produces medium body in
lines with red fruit aromas. A great alternative
to Pino Anwar. Nevada deal from the
region of Nevada. This is where the running
of the bulls happens. They produce great row space, great red lines from
several varieties, but mainly from,
gotta match them. In the red. These are bright winds with beautiful
erroneous chocolate. Alina deal. We're in
the Basque region now with the famous
chocolate wines. These can be both white or red. But why it is, I would
say the one that's more popular and easier to find. These are high acid, Feste, delicious white lines
with a bit of a fist. If you like Sauvignon
Blanc, this is for you. Chocolate Alina has three deals. Be Skype, go, and
add our backbone. Don't worry about
all those names. But just remember chat calling. The following deals that
we're going to look at are in the region of Galatia VS. By shes DO most well-known for excellent white wines
from the grape variety. I buddy here. These are fresh, high acidity white wines
with citrus aromas. But he made DO another
deal from the region of Galicia that produces
excellent white wines from a different variety though. The one to use here the
most is Trisha wines from this variety or fuller body
rebate effect that I DO. Also from the
region of that ECM. They produce white and red, but are mostly known for their red wines from the
grape variety man Sia. And this is the same variety
used in BSO deal by deal, another deal from Belize, yet they are famous
for their production of white wines from the
grape variety, Belgium. The wines from this
variety tend to be medium to full body with
medium acidity. You can also find red wines
from the great man Sia. Here. We're leaving the
least CNL and heading to the following five deals
are all found in Catalonia. Remember, these are not
all of the fields in here, but these are the ones that we focused on during this course. Video that deal cue
like real basis, a denomination of origin
classified or feel to you in the red wines from fuel rods are some
of the best of Spain. And from a very tiny
region with very old vines that showcase magnificently
the Mediterranean terroir. These are long lived, elegant wines
produced mainly from the grape varieties
got I'm not trying to cutting in Monsanto deal. This wine region surrounds
the region of Iraq, also known for excellent
high level quality red lines from the same grape varieties
as video that however, they tend to be at a
lower cost benefits deal. This is a deal covering a
large region of GFP anemia. You can find everything here. Why the red row say sparkling, all with different
characteristics and from different varietals, both indigenous and
more international. Here I invite you
to explore and find your favorites from
cannabis in that DO. This is a coastal DON, Catalonia that produces both red and white wines
from old findings. Reds tend to be
medium to fuller body black fruit aromas from Betty Yan and got a match
on grape varietals. Y hats are usually
medium bodied with stone fruit aromas that deal. This is the last video we
looked at during this course. And it is famous for producing white wines from the grape
variety got a match on. But Lanka, these are
medium to fuller body white wines with high alcohol
and aromas of stone fruit. This is a good wine to try
if you like Chardonnay. We are now leaving
the famous deals and, and we are looking
at other deals of Spain, like Commedia V0. And this is from the
coastal region of more CEA. The widespread lead
TO are primarily red from the grape
varietals monastery. These are big, bold, full bodied and powerful winds. Now we're leaving the region
of more sepia with its deal. Who need them. And we
are going to the region of unbundle CIA in
southern Spain. And this is the land
of credit or sharing. These are four to
five white wines with a lot of history to them. They are produced
in several styles. They can be bone dry
or luscious, sweet. I invite you to take a look at the headers are Sherry chart. When trying this out, you can find that in
your resources and don't let vacation
scare you away. They should be an invitation
to try something new. Now let's leave the Peninsula
and head to the islands. Let's do a quick summary of
the different deals that we found in the islands of
Spain, the cleric islands. The deals we looked
at our Beanie, Celine Dion and 11 deal. Specifically in this case. These deals are in the
island of my Georgia. They produce red and white wines from indigenous varietals. The ones you have lower
alcohol levels with more of a red fruit and bright
aromas and the highest acidity, they tend to be more light
and medium bodied wines. Now let's jump to the Canary
Islands. Use less than that. Yes. I mentioned several deals
from these islands. And I don't expect you
to memorize all of them, but it would be great if you can recognize them when
you read them in a restaurant menu or if you
look at them at a wine shop. These deals are each less than ideas DO than cidal of the deal. By giving out of data V0 equal
then delta Isadora deal. You can find both red and
white wines in these deals. All from indigenous grape
varietals and all very unique. And last but not
least, gaba deal. This is Spain's
version of champagne. So that should be
easy to remember. This is a high-quality
sparkling wine produced with the same
method as champagne, but with Spanish
grape varieties. It can be produced in
different regions of Spain. But it was born in
the region of Beni, this in data Lumia. And you cannot go
wrong with gaba.
22. Spanish Wine Pairings ns: We just looked at a lot of different wine regions
and styles of wine. And of course, each
one of these wines Pierce lovely with
different styles of food. We will look at
every single line again and what they pair with. But what I want to do as names
some different dishes and tell you which Spanish wine they could pair
very nicely with. You will also find these suggestions in
your resources section, a green salad with
the light dressing. I will select a
white wine from yes, by chez DO, or a white wine from one of
the three chuckling deals. Now if it's a solid that
has a heavy dressing on it, I would probably go for a wine that has more
structured, still a white wine, but the one with
more structured, something like a video
or a video or a DOI, a chastened charcuterie board. I think a glass of rows stay
nice and crisp and bright. Would it be lovely with
cheese and charcuterie? Maybe from the island
of land settled thing. That's the Canary Islands. So the D0 would be Landsat
or pick DO grill tuna. Tonight is usually pretty meaty. So my preference here would be a red wine with light
to medium body, like piano song DO from
the grape variety and, and see it with white fish. I would select a
white wine from that. Do I think it would
be a lovely pairing? Say VJ, chuckling,
definitely a Jacqueline, the thinness of
the signature and the wine would pair so
nicely steamed muscles. I would definitely go with the white wine from
various by shes DO. And if you happen
to get a chance to actually try the
muscles from this area, the area of Ganesha. Make sure you try them
because they are amazing. Grilled chicken. I prefer to have chicken with white wine and I would probably go with a white wine
from biogas DO Turkey. This pairs nicely with
the fuller body wife, or a lighter foggy read, like the white wine
from rebuttal DO or a red one from Nevada
Faculty deal, beef hamburger. For a hamburger, I would go with a red wine from home MIGA deal. That's a big and juicy wine that I think would complement
very nicely with the burger. Lamb. Lamb is one of my
favorite dishes. And I would probably pair it with a medium to
full bodied wine, like a video card DOC, or be better than Duetto deal. I would also enjoy
these winds over a long period of time while
eating my meal, pork chops. With pork. I would select the
red line that is not too powerful by one from Nevada, deal with the grape variety of being got too much at stake. There are many
options for stake, but readapt the acute
wouldn't be my first option. Chocolate cake, it's
time for dessert. So how about a glass of gamma? These are just some options. But at the end of the day, the best part about
pairing wine with food is discovering what you like,
your personal preference.
23. Congratulations ns: Congratulations on completing
