1. Presentation: Hi, I'm Stella Anderle. I'm an artist, surface
pattern designer and art teacher, settled in Ontario, Canada. I love to create
playful art projects. And it is my joy to observe how my students express
themselves through art, what they enjoy the most, and how they grow as artists. Something that I have
observed is that every year the boys
in my art classes, the boys from three
to ten years-old, ask me to draw and paint
big vehicles like trucks, tractors, bulldozers, and all kinds of
construction vehicles. And even if girls usually don't ask me
this kind of projects, I noticed that they
also enjoy them. Today's class is especially for all kids who are
construction fans, but it is also for the teachers and parents that
would like to offer their students or their kids playful construction
art projects. And if you are a playful artsy adult, you might also enjoy it. We will start this class
with two fun activities. The "Shape Hunt Game" and
the "Carnival of Shapes", which will help children to get familiar with geometric shapes. Through this course, you
will learn how to draw whimsical construction vehicles
using geometric shapes. How to paint your drawings
using different art mediums. I will present you four
different techniques for the colouring process using
four different art mediums. Watercolours, acrylic paint, oil pastels, and water-soluble
wax pastels. You can focus only
on one if you wish, or experiments with several
and even all of them. Finally, you will learn
how to create a variety of interesting textural
backgrounds while experimenting with
chalk pastels, watercolours and salt,
acrylic sponge painting, mono-printing and stamping. Again, you can choose
your favorite art mediums to work with, or experiment
with all of them. By the end of this class, you would have created one
or several art pieces with whimsical construction
vehicles on interesting textural background. See you inside of the class.
2. Materials: Let's have a look at the materials that I
will use in this class. You don't need to
have all of them, if you prefer
to experiment with one specific technique and
use only a few art mediums. But if you wish to make
all the experiments, here is the full list of the
materials that I will use. A graphite HB pencil
and an eraser. White construction paper,
colour construction paper, watercolour paper for
watercolour backgrounds. Oil pastels, water-soluble
wax pastels, chalk pastels, acrylic paint, watercolours, a wide and
a medium paint brush. Small container with water
for washing my brushes. Big container with water - the size of your paper. Some kitchen salt, a sponge, a plastic sheet protector. Different home found items such as bubble
wrap, plastic fork, citrus bags, bottle caps, or different other objects
with which you can make marks. I also recommend you to
have always with you a rag, and something to protect your table: a messy map, newspapers
or an old tablecloth. Again, don't worry if you
don't have everything, you can complete this class using a few specific
art mediums. But I want to offer
you the maximum of possibilities and
creative explorations. In the next video, we will speak about your class project.
3. Class Project: Your project for this class is
to create an art piece with whimsical
construction vehicles on a textural background with the technique and the
mediums of your choice. Don't hesitate to share your project and to reach out
for questions and feedback. I will be happy to answer your questions and
to encourage you. Now, let's start with the first construction
vehicle, the tractor.
4. Warm-up 1: Shape Hunt Game: This video is the little
game that will help children to discover or to review
the geometric shapes. For each geometric shape. Try to find objects
that have the same shape. Are you ready? Let's start. The first geometric shapes
I want you to look for, are the circle and the oval. Let's make it simple. While the circle
looks like a disk, the oval looks more like an egg. Try to find objects that have a circular or an oval shape. I'm sure you will find a
lot of small circular, and oval objects in your home, even among your toys. When you are ready, display them on a flat surface. For example, on the floor or
on a table in front of you. If you can, take a picture
or ask your mum, your dad, or another adult
to help you take photos using a camera
or their cellphone. Great! Let's move to the
next geometric shape. It is the triangle. The triangles can be different, but they all have three
sides and three angles. Can you find objects
with a triangular shape? Now, let's focus on the
square and the rectangle. They all have four sides. A square has all
its sides equal, whereas the rectangle has only its
opposite sides equal. Can you find objects that have a square or a rectangular shape ? What a wonderful collection! Let's look now at another geometric shape
that has also four sides, but only two of its
sides are parallel. We call this shape a trapezoid. Can you find objects with
trapezoid shape. It might be a little
more difficult. But if you don't
find trapezoid objects, in your home, look at pictures and photos, and try to identify
some trapezoid shapes. The geometric shapes can
have more than four sides. If they have five sides, We call them pentagons. If they have six sides, we call them hexagons. The stars are also geometric
shapes with many sides. Let's call all of those shapes
with many sides, polygons. Your last mission for this game will be
to find around you, polygons with more
than four sides. Collect objects, take
photos, find pictures. And if you wish, share with us your collection
of geometric shapes.
5. Warm-up 2: Carnival of Shapes: Now, as you are at ease with the
geometric shapes. Let's draw them. Fill a sheet of paper with a
variety of geometric shapes. Circles, ovals, triangles, rectangles, trapezoids,
pentagons, hexagons, and all kinds of stars... Create a carnival of shapes. Vary the size of the shapes, their colours and their position. You can also overlap them. Continue till you have filled the paper with this carnival of shapes.
6. Drawing a Tractor: In this video, we
will draw a tractor. If you want, you can draw
directly with an oil pastel or if you want to have more possibilities to erase
and to fix certain details, you can use an HB pencil and an eraser. For the
circular shapes of the wheels, you
can draw them free handed or find objects
that are circular. Whatever you can find. They will be very helpful. I will start with the
wheels of the tractor. The rear wheels will be bigger
than the front wheels. Just trace two circles. Leave a little
space between them. Now, we will connect this
space with a straight line. Now place your pencil
behind the front wheel. Just behind, go up. A little bit
higher than the back wheel. We'll draw this rectangular shape. We will not see that part
which is behind the wheel. And another rectangular shape. on the top of that one. Now we have two rectangles :
a front rectangle and a little bit bigger back rectangle. The top of this back rectangle, you can draw another rectangle. Or, if you wish, You can draw a trapezoid. Let's draw a window. And here, will be the door. Let us put the lights on the tractor. On the top, we can put the air stack. Again, another rectangle, and then, Finish it with a curved line. Inside of the wheels I will draw free handed two
other circles, two smaller circles. Perfect circles are
never easy to draw. Just go back and forth till you make
a free handed circle. It doesn't have to be perfect. You can do it approximately. Or you can use a
circular object. Just trace around. I would like to put some
more variations on this wheel. You know, the wheels of the tractors
are never completely smooth. They have those bumps that look like little rectangular
shapes on top of the wheels. And I will do the same
for the smaller wheel. Here we are. Our tractor is ready. Now it is time to go on the
top with an oil pastel. Choose rather a dark colour.
I will choose this blue. And I will go over all. Of course,
the lines of the pastel are much bolder. It is okay if you go a little bit outside of your pencil lines. It is not a problem. Just try to follow the overall shape. It doesn't have to be
perfectly the same. And on the top, I will do those rectangles, again. Maybe your oil pastels
are smaller than mine. Maybe like this one, which will allow you to
have more precise strokes. But I will continue with this one because
maybe some of you, you have this kind of very big, thick oil pastels, which allow us to do
only very big shapes. They don't have to be perfect. If they are a little bit whimsical, It's even better. We neither use a ruler and we
try to draw straight lines. as well as we can. And, if they are not completely straight,
it is also okay. It will give a little bit whimsical character
to our drawing. And it will be more original. Now is the time to colour it.
7. Painting the Tractor: Now it's time to color the inside of the
shapes of our tractor. I will use for this watercolors. I have obtained tweet
and medium round brush. You will need a container
of water somewhere, a pallet to mix your
colors and watercolors. I would like to use
some needling for the you will see
that the watercolors State east side of the
acetyl outlines. Very easy. The stay inside of the sheets because it will mask gills, don't allow the water
to spread on down, leaving largely
covered watercolors. You can even decide
to go inside. You will see when you try
to go over the oil pastels, push one side or the other, they will not be
covered by watercolors. You're pretty safe.
Just go on and put the colors that you would like
to see on your attractor. You can also choose to put a second layer with
a different color. Let's start to experiment. For example, I will
cover this outer part of the wheel with a valid tool. It brings a difference
between the ear parts. The outer part is the same color, covered the door in green. The green color and mislead
thing about color in nature. You can choose any other color. I'm saying I will put the
front part in orange. Wish you can also
throw some ornaments. Blue, these ones, your first
layer is completely dry. My stroke color. It should
also be interesting, but it depends if
you want it or not. Delights adult. Living light is ready. If we've had gone outside of the lungs when you
put the watercolors, don't follow me because later we will cut the
shape of the structure.
8. Drawing a Bulldozer: In this video, I'm going to show you how to
draw a bulldozer. I will start by sketching the bulldozer pencil, HB pencil. I can use my eraser if I
wanted to fix some shapes. First we will draw a tractor. I will use some round
objects to trace. The beak. Small. The big wheel will
be the backfill. The small bill will
be the front one. And I will connect
the two wheels. Double line here. Now let's draw a rectangle for the front part
as the tractor. Stuff is somewhere
here in the middle of this line connecting
those two wheels. Another rectangle going back, connected with the backward. Then another
rectangle on the top. If you want, you can adjust
the shape and you can make a rectangle or you can
make it a trapezoid shape. Whatever you prefer. Double this horizontal line. So this vertical line. To separate two parts. This part will be adore. Put another circle in the
middle of is what we'll use here in front. That has the blame me, long oval shape, which
will pull to this link. For the blade, I will simply CC, reversed at C,
connect those niches. You can also totally Baker
attract her delight to draw another arm to
hold the bucket. For this reversed V-shape. I can see upside
turned, upside down. Then double lines. Now for the bucket's on the bottom, throw
another C-shape. Connect the points
of this C-shape. I want to make it a
little bit more pointy. Make it ear for the packets
to grab some materials. I would say those
are risks ready. You can always add additional
elements or details. But now we are ready
to go on top of it and outline it
with an oil pastel. This time, I would like
to use this brown color. Just follow the lines. Even if the cluster
is much thicker than the HB graphite pencil. Don't worry if it
is not perfect. Perfect, perfect. In some little whimsy character. For some details on the wheels. Draw this rectangular marks
on the surface of the wheels. Here we are, we are ready
now to cover it with paint.
9. Painting the Bulldozer: This time I will use acrylic
paint, medium, round brush, and a palette for the pilot in order to
mix the colors so you can use a clade or
delete a container. This is the lid
from a yogurt pot. I would like to
color it in orange. In order to make orange, I will mix yellow and red. Well, this is not
really a writer. This is rather fishy. Met, just use whatever you have. I have this color and
I still believe I can make orange with
this two colors. You can also mix the
colors directly on paper. Don't worry if your paint
covers some of the lines. Because we will go on
the top at the very end and we will outline them again. Also, don't worry if you
go outside of the sheep's, for example, here, I will
do it intentionally. It happens to you don't worry, because later you will cut
out the whole vehicle. That's okay. If you
paint outside the lines. Another color for
the year before, It's part of the blade. If you want to change the
color, wash your brush. Try and turn around. Let's choose another color. Led to use this blue
with a little bit of water for the windows. Now they accredit
being to snow more so thick and it ends somewhere
like watercolors. The water doesn't allow me to
cover the oil pastel line. I can cross over
without covering it. Because the oil pastels are water resistant
and they will push the water and the beam and outside of the
oil faster lines. For the wheels, I would use maybe more saturated
acrylic color. For this part of the blade. See the difference when
the colors in pure, not diluted with water. And this much thicker
and much more saturated. Then when the color is diluted
with water, like here. Here the color is solid, and here it is more
like watercolors. It's stained also the lights. Bulldozer is ready. We believe the draft
at the moment. Once you're painting is dry. Again, they're fast the oil
pastel for the outlines and retrace all the outlines
this week that they pop up. Great. I hope you
enjoyed drawing and painting this bulldozer. Let's move to the next
construction vehicles.
10. Drawing an Excavator: This time I will show you
how to draw an excavator. I will use my pencil, HB pencil, and my eraser. To start. We'll begin with
two small circles. I will use this circuit, the circular shape of this tape, leave a distance between
those two circles. We would like to connect them. In the middle. We will draw also
two other lines, one on the top and
one on the bottom. Then around those two circles, we will draw a novel beak oval. On the top of this oval shape. I rectangles, which will be
kind of that's for cold. Another rectangle. One rectangle higher
than the second plans. Going go a little bit
outside of this platform. Inside of this third rectangle, smaller rectangles
for the Windows. One which is on the edge. This the correct angle. And the second one, which is smaller
for smaller window, just mark the
position of the door. Up from this older top
of this rectangle. We will it had
again a rectangle, high, but not very large. With the smaller one. I'm going to draw another
rectangle which will be tilted mature fence in the middle of the
smaller rectangle. And draw the line a to climb in this direction towards
the upper left corner. Then through another line from the edge of this
smaller rectangle. Going in the opposite direction. Follow this line
with another line starting from the
Sage, going cough. You can connect to
those two lines. Then goes to a
little bit higher, then go down for log and more of this one. Again, we follow with
straight lines following this one's in the same
direction as this one. Or in other words, this one. Those two lines will not cross. They will stay parallel at the same distance from each
other as much as you can. The bottom. Again, C-shape for the packet. Because nature is ready, you can add more
details if you wish. But at this point, I
would suggest to go ahead and outline everything
with an oil pastel. Tried to follow the lines. The lines with the oil
pastel will discuss thicker. You should not be bothered. Even use their own for
different from defensive lines. Don't worry, just
go ahead, outline. And I think it gives it
a little bit different. Once it goes. Just embrace it. You are trying. We've had in the
heart and more charm. If you want. Your lines are darker in a way that you
don't see the pencil marks. You need to choose a darker
color of oil pastel. And you can't decides to
outline certain parts in dark brown to keep the other
the other lines lighter. I think I would like to keep.
11. Painting the Excavator: You can choose to
color the Expo Center with watercolors
as we do towards a drug or acrylics as we
did for the bulldozer. Or you can discover
a third technique for coloring with pestis, which are water soluble. No more use the oil pastels
which are not water-soluble, but instead I'm tolerant. Pastels. There are two ways to cover with this
water-soluble wax pastels. You can apply directly
a color, fastness dry. Then go with a wet brush. Blend colored. This way. You can also use more than one colors and
blend them together. I will blend those two
colors with water. Another way, you use the
water-soluble wax pastels with the bottom of the
Fastow to apply to directly. Paper. On top of this brown. Some additional marks. Color to connote some mixed. Those two techniques. Sometimes you can take a brush and move the colors it around or to directly
with a wet pastel. Further Windows. I would like to use
these pockets of water. Again, there is no need to color the open window
sweet, the blue path. It's not. As weekend take. Water, moves the
pigment around and you see it is very
saturated color. Now, I will continue
outlining tracing. The excavator. We did dark past and it needed
all the lines stand out, changed to put some
details on the edge. Table bumps. The excavator to move. Even when it's
very steep ground. If you want to add
some final touches, some more colors and detail, go ahead and delete. Our excavator is ready.
12. Drawing a Truck: In this video, we
will draw a track. I will start again
with the wheels. This time I will take
the outside shape. This around object, leaves some distance
between the wheels. Maybe four fingers. Let's connect those two wheels. I will draw a double line. Connect them, then prolonged those two lines on the
other side of the wheel. And same here will prolong
those lines. On this side. This will be the front of the truck and this will
be the back of the truck. In front, we'll draw a
vertical line going up. Then going horizontally. Order to make a rectangle. Let's draw another rectangle
on top of this one. Here. I would like to make a trapezoid shape rectangle for the very small
rectangle for the lights. Vertical lines
here for the door. Behind. Horizontal line
between front part of the truck and the wheels, prolong it on the other
side of the wheel. From this point, slightly
higher than the front door. Throw another long
horizontal line. We will complete
this beak rectangle. Then you can put the details and the ornaments that you
would like to see on your truck through another
circle inside of the reals. I'm ready to trace it. Tweeted pesto.
13. Painting the Truck: This time I will color my
truck using only oil pastels. I like the solid, bright colors of the oil pastels try to color inside
of the shapes. But if you go
outside, don't worry, as we go cut out the shape of the truck for our final project. You can also mix the
colors of the oil pastels by applying the colors
one above the other. We call this layering. For example, here I wanted to
mix the yellow and orange. I will apply the orange
on the top of the yellow. You will feel the
oily texture of the pastels when you try to
blend two colors together. For the windows, I
recommend you to meet with a little bit of doom. By applying first the white, then some Utah touches the blue, and finally, blend again on
the top with a white pasta. You can also experiment with other combinations of colors. At the end. Go again over all
the lines with a dark oil. Pass them to make
them stand out. Congratulations. You're threat
illustration is finished.
14. Cutting-out the Vehicles: I wanted to give you
some simple tips for cutting out your shapes. The excessive paper
is bothering. You. Cut out roughly
the whole shape. Getting grade of the paper
which is all around that. You don't need to handle width. It will be much easier
to cut out the shape because you will not
have all the paper around which will bother
you follow the lines. It will be much
easier instead of turning the Caesars
to turn the paper. When you have some
smaller parts, some tiny parts to
preserve, go slowly. New paper. To avoid cutting. The small fonts,
engage you got it. Don't worry, you
can always glue it after your final art piece. But let's try to preserve
all the tiny shapes. Got everything in one piece. Remember, new sheet, instead
of turning the Caesars. And actually you can adjust, you can turn to Cesar said
a little bit in order to adjust them to the shape
you're cutting out. When you start having
too much paper, which is bothering
you, for example, this one here, you can
simply gets rid of it. Now I will slow down when
they arrive with this edge and alternative paper and
take a new direction. Again, when I counted this edge, I turn the paper as my, the service, take
a new direction. When you arrive at a facet,
the wheel somewhere, you have a lot of baths
and a lot of details. So the edges, you can
simply ignore the GTO. The overall circular shape. Just leave the whitespaces
in-between those dumps. Now if you wish, you
can go ahead and remove all the whitespaces one-by-one. You can also leave
the tractor as it is with those whitespaces
around. I will remove them. Sometimes we the little kids, it's difficult and it requires patient that can be a
little tiring for them. But the way the older
kids from seven years up, There's no reason not to do it. They they are able to remove
those whitespaces and they practice their fine
motor skills for doing that. Practicing also
accuracy patients. They learned also to take care to create a piece
which is more refined.
15. Create Sandy Textured Background with Chalk Pastels: Now I want to give
you a few ideas for interesting
textural backgrounds. This is just the container, a plastic container, or if
you can find any kind of box, even a kitchen,
kitchen container, to feel a little bit of water
like one finger of water. I will wrap some chalk pastels. Kids can also do it. I do it using the
handle of a brush. Sometimes they
break down for you. It's nice to have a rag nearby. And especially if you
just said **** proud. It happens. That's okay. I'll take a sheet of white paper to fit into the
surface of the water. Take it out. Do you have some very
interesting send it texture. Then leave it try. I will put some more. We will try to either
colored paper. Most of the colors I choose
to put in for the background, our construction
colors like brown and yellow and orange or black. A little bit muddy colors, but I like also to put a, another unrealistic
color in order to bring a little bit more
imaginary effect. Something more
stylized, unrealistic, and with a touch of
dreamy character. For the previous texture,
I have put violet and for this one I will
put a little bit of blue. Live with four-inch. Now let's take
this yellow paper, yellow construction paper. You can have some spots that
are not covered with color. You can leave them or you can go again and put it
again in the water. Just insist more on this spot. Here. It just leave it like that. But I can try.
16. Create a Background with Acrylics and Sponge: Another way to create interesting textural
background with the Magic effect is
to use acrylic paint. Just put the colors that you think you might see
in construction side. I will use for this
sponge and old sponge. Just tip your sponge
into the paint. Spread it in the paper. I have chosen here a
blue construction paper. But you can choose
any other color. You want, even whitepaper
that the color. If you spread it like this, it will have those marks,
those continuous lines. You can use this
gesture in order to create the pattern
of the Wilson, the ground if you wish. But for the moment I will
just that the colors, I like to include some
bright colors in addition to their muddy colors in order to drink more visual interests. Just continue dabbing
the color teal. You have filled the whole sheet. Again. I will leave it dry.
17. Create a Background Using Mono-printing and Stamping: Let's explore some other ideas for interesting backgrounds. This time I will use mono
printing and for this purpose, let's make it simple. If you don't have a jelly plate, I will use very simple
materials because probably most of you don't have Jelly
plates in your classrooms. And maybe also at home
for some parents. You can use just a
plastic sheet protector. I will cover it with paint. You can use the
colors that you want. I will use the critic
paint I will use is also some additional items like
bubble wrap, cetera, bag. We can also make marks with
some circular objects. Why not a plastic fork? Whatever home found items you can you can gather
for this purpose. You can meet so
some colors if you want or you can also
mix them directly. The plastic sheet protector.
That's what I will do. I will spread with a brush. When the three primary
colors mix together, they create some muddy colors. Brownish, grayish, very
desaturated colors. I will still leave some of
them bright primary colors. Visa go. I would like to add also
a little bit of orange to warn some of
the brown colors. We call this the plates. When we speak about printing. This is the surface
where we will create the print that we would
like to see on our sheet. I'm going to put
some bubble wrap here like that and put it here. Instead of applying
your fingers, you can also apply to the
sheet of paper if you wish. Now, I'm applying my paper. Sprays with your fingers. Four quarters everywhere
on the paper. Let's see. This is the first print. On the top, we will go
with another print. I will use this
Cyrus Beck again. Put it here on the property. Trusts me down another
sheet of paper. Then again here. You can apply it again
on another spot. Cover. Press lightly. Remove
this little corner. I create an orange color. Let's apply again our trend. I didn't go with a fork. Create also some round shapes, smaller and some figure. You can also cover
the bubble wrap. You can also apply it
on citrus thoughts. We can make some trends
also with the circle. This will create
more subtle marks. If you apply first the paint and then you apply the object. If you want remarks
to be more visible, prepare the color
of your choice. Deep, the shape into the color. Here you will have marks with the color you
have prepared. Once you're satisfied, you
can leave your project, try.
18. Create a Background with Watercolours and Salt: Now I think the
easiest way to create an interesting
textured background will be with
watercolors and south. I will use the game
colors that are usually colors of the
construction sites. Use a lot of water
to make them flow. Play together. Some darker colors
on the ground. While the paper is still wet. Some salt here and there. Again, I will add more salt. You can leave the
watercolors create some unpredictable effects or put some intentional
marks here and there. Leave it like that. See how it wants it. Just try.
19. Choose a Background for Your Vehicles: As we have all of
our backgrounds, I like to have a look at
them before we play with our vehicles and choose the background which we would like for each of those vehicles. Or if you have created
just one fico, you can decide which background you would like to have
for your vehicle. First of all, we have created backgrounds with chalk pastels, went to dry chalk
pastels and to Walter. I think those are my favorites. They have a lot of character, especially for this kind
of construction project. Now, let's play around and see which background we
prefer for each car. I really like this one. This one looks very nice. Then we created some backgrounds
with a credit paints and the sponge dabbing
the paint onto the paper. Well, those are darker and make their vehicles pop
up on the background. Yes, maybe this one. We have also created those backgrounds
also with acrylics. Stamping different marks
where two different objects like bubble wrap that
we created those marks, the fork and some
circular objects. Here we can have also some interesting,
playful compositions. Finally, we did also a big round with
watercolors and south. I definitely liked this one. Not this one looks
also very hairpin. Well, I like most of them. Maybe I will go for this
one for the moment. Western, if choosing a
background for your cars, go ahead and glue
them on the paper. I hope you really
enjoyed this project and I will be very happy to
see what you have created. Don't forget to share some of your hippy construction vehicles
in the project gallery.
20. Final Thoughts: Congratulations for
completing this class. I hope you enjoyed it and I will be happy to see what
you have created. Don't hesitate to share your art project and reach out
for feedback or questions. If you are looking for
more playful art project, you would also like to see
some of my other classes, such as sensitive
farmers, mushroom houses, or even paper, flower
board or drawing games. Yeah, Have a great
day and I hope to see you soon in some of
my other classes.
