1. Introduction: Hey, have you ever wanted
to illustrate water? Well, I have come
up. Okay, again. Okay, have you ever wanted
to illustrate water? Well, I came up with an illustration technique that I really want to share with you. Hi. My name is Alexandra,
AKD art mother. I'm a professional art teacher, artist, and online educator. I love to invent things mainly when it comes to
digital illustration, whether it is using
traditional media combined with digital
or procreate brushes. In this class, I want
to show you how to use real watercolor texture in your iPad to create a
whimsical seascape. I can also show you how
to paint beautiful sky, some clouds, some stors, to create this sea scene. And you will have
artistic freedom to include anything in it, a boat or an island,
it is up to you. I will also show
you how to create a circular composition
and how to paint wood, my way so that it will
look like as if we were looking outside of
any window from a boat. This clothe is perfect
for beginners. I will show you everything
step by step in the resources. You will find my sktch, the texture that actually we are going to create together, but if you don't want to, you can just use the resources. You will have a color
palette and some brushes. What you will need is
your iPad sometime, and I will bring you the fun. I can't fit to see you in
class and what you create. So I just get started.
2. About The Class: Welcome to the class. I'm
so happy that you are here. Now, in this video, I'm going to talk to you about
the class structure, the things that you
will need in the class, the class project,
and the resources. So first of all, the class is structured in a
very simple way. We are going to go step by step. I will explain you how
to create the sketch. We are going to work
on that together. If it doesn't work out for you, you will have my sketch
in the resources, so you can use that
in the next steps. We are going to paint the waves. I will show you the illustration technique that I
was talking about. And Then we are going
to paint the sky. I will show you how to paint
these whimsical clouds. We will add some
stars, the moon. It is going to be
really up to you, what you include
in the background. Then I will show you
how to work with this image that we create
in a circular composition. As if we would be looking
outside the window, I really like this
type of composition, so I wanted to include
it in this clause. You don't need to do that. You will also have
artistic freedom to include anything
in this scene, so you can add a boat, you can add I don't
know birds or an island or whatever
comes up to your mind. Or you can just leave
the seascape as it is. It will be still beautiful. So this is actually
your class project, and I want to
invite you to aplod your class project to the
project gallery and also check out what others did
so that we can have a little bit of feedback and
discussion on each other's. We are going to create a
watercolor texture like this. I will include this in
the resources as well, so you don't need to paint this. But if you really want
to do it as well. It is really fun,
so I recommend it. You will need watercolor paper, water, brush, and some paint. And you will need your iPad. You will get my signature
brush sat that you can use. We are going to use all
the brushes from there. I also created a color
palette for you, but again, feel free to use
your own colors as you wish. And yeah, I think that's
all for this video. The first of you need to
take is to grab your iPad, open procreate, and see
you in the next video.
3. The Sketch: Okay. So in this class, I'm going to teach you how to create these kind of waves.
They look beautiful right. Their base is a vertical texture that we are going to actually
create together later. But now at first in this video, we are going to create
a sketch for them. Now, the composition of this
work can be this circular. I really love to work with
this circular composition. But let me just show you
another artwork in which I use these waves and this
illustration technique. This is a square sized canvas. Basically, this is going
to be our composition. We are going to have the waves in the lower third
of the artwork. We are going to create the
sky and draw some clouds, maybe some stars,
and you will have the artistic freedom to
add anything to the sea. So you can create your own boat, you can add an island or anything that you
can think about. It is totally up to you. We are not going to deal
with that in this class. We are going to
create just a scene, and I will show you this
illustration technique. So I'm going to work in this square sized
canvas composition. But I will also show
you how to create a circular composition that
I think is really cool. Let's just go to the gallery and create a square sized canvas. At first, choose the
sketching pencil from the brush side that
comes with the class, choose black and approximately note the lower third
of the canvas. This is just going to
be a line that we are going to draw over, so
don't worry about it. I will create another layer. And now as we are
working with water, we are going to draw at
first simple waves, okay? So maybe starting
where this line is. I will have one wave. And there will be another
wave like maybe crossing. Or no. Let's try like
this and maybe this. Try to create these waves
going through the image. Now we are going to
break these waves. I will turn this
guide off and I will break this wave and create
this backward motion into it. Okay. I have my first
wave. Looks cool. I will just erase this
crossing line so that I can know where is my wave because
I will just show you. These waves are overlapping. This is what makes it look
so good that there is one, one wave behind, et ca. So you need to just erase those crossing lines
to know where you are. Okay. I will draw
another one. Maybe here. I des. So now, like try to figure out, and you can just erase
from these lines. This is just to help you with the composition
guiding the waves. We also need these waves within to make it
really look like water. You don't necessarily
have to have them. Let me just show you again. Here I only have these waves. But this makes it look
more aggressive while. Here, this water is
a bit more calm. If you want to make a
bit more calm water, you need to break
less the waves. Samy raising the crossing lines. Right. I will continue this shape, make this shape look like this. I want a third and maybe it
is going to be a smaller one up here. Behind this one. Ops. I want this to be
a bit more thick. I miss wave here. I will comb this wave a bit
with this in the front. Okay, we have the
sketch approximately. So see you in the next video, where we are going to
fill in the shapes.
4. Filling In The Shapes: All right. So in this video, we are going to
fill in the shapes, and we will need to fill
them in individually. So you have a color
palette here. I want you to choose
this light green. You can obviously choose the
sea color that you want, but I prefer this one. I will choose a clean shaper, and I will create
a new layer below the sketch and lower the
opacity of the sketch. And now I'm going
to go through each of these waves and put
it onto a new layer. So I will start at the front. Okay. This is going to be one wave. If you need to get back from the shape to make it more clean, just choose an eraser and the
same branch as an eraser, so the clean shaper and
to create clean shapes. Now, create another
layer below this shape. You can even turn it off so that you can really see the shape
that you're working on. And as you can see, I'm
closing the shape like this. So basically, I can
move it around if I think that I need that
for my composition. And also, if you want to animate this later
in procreate dreams, you will be able to move
these separate elements around and create a moving s. So this is really good to create these waves on different layers. So create another layer
behind and just fin. Okay. So which one is missing? Okay, this back one. So I will create another layer, put it behind and
just fill it in. Okay. So now we have one, two, three, four, five,
six different shapes. And now at first, we are going to create
the watercolor texture. You don't need to
create your own. You will get some
in the resources. But let's just see
how it's done. Se in the next video.
5. The Watercolor Texture: All right. So in this video, we are going to create
a watercolor texture. What you will need for this
is some watercolor paper, a brush, watercolor
paint and water. This paint is
professional anin paint, but whatever watercolor will
do it with strong pigments. I will just choose the ones I know that look pretty
good together, and this is this
blue and this green. We are going to create
watercolor blooms. So I will place a little bit of water over the
watercolor paper. Now I'm going to add the paints. And as you can see, the
pigment just spreads over this watery part and you
can drop water over it. And can you see here
the water again just. You can do it at one color. I will add a bit
of green as well. I love how this looks, how the two colors
just mix together. And drop sometimes
just simply water. It is really good
if it has contrast. So this is why it
is good to have a lighter and a
bit darker color, it will show through in the
texture and will just drop. So water without pigment. So it pushes out the pigment and creates this really
nice watercolor blooms. If you have too much excess
water just I have like here, use a paper towel
and just grab it up. And you can just add
some color back. If you wish you can let it dry, it will bring out some
watercolor blooms, but you can as well immediately create just an image
with your iPad. That's what I'm going
to do. I will just grab my iPad and take a picture. Now we have the picture of
our texture in our iPad. See you in the next
video and I will show you how to apply
it to your waves.
6. Applying The Texture: So let's just place this
texture onto our waves. I will import the image. Here it is. What I'm going to do is to place it over on
the top right here. I will take down
this saturation. Heat the adjustments button, heat the hue
saturation brightness and take down this saturation. It is black and white. This is why I said we need some contrast when we are
creating this texture so that it shows up in the
tb or in the texture. Now, what I'm going to
do is to choose a wave. Now we are going to work with one wave and let it be
this big one in the front. I will will turn off every
other one so that you can see what I'm doing. It's
this one. Yeah. I will place this
texture over that. I will actually
duplicate this texture. Can you see? Now we
have the wave layer. We have the texture layer over, I will click on it and
make it a clipping mask. Will turn off the top one. Again, It was here. I hit clipping mask and it clipped into the
shape of the wave. I will just need to
place it down here. I will make it a bit bigger. Now I have all these
watercolor blooms within this. Now we don't have color. I will create another layer
and fill it with color. And also make it
a clipping mask. Now I will change the
blending mode of this layer. I will go to darken. Can you see that? How
beautiful is this? Let's do it with all
the other waves. What I did, I will duplicate
this texture several times. We have six waves, one, two, three, four, one more. I will place one
over every layer. Every wave. Lo at this one. I have one texture
over every wave. I will just turn
these layers on. Let's work on this one now. I will hit, put as a
clipping mask, and again, find a part in the
texture that fits there. You can make this
texture bigger, you can make it smaller
for more detail. I will again create
another layer, filling with that color, make it a clipping mask and change its blending
mode to darken. Now, let's do this again. I turn on this wave. Turn on the texture,
make it a clipping mask. Again, place it all
over to have a texture, create another layer,
fill it with color, and again make it a clipping
mask, change it to darken. I hope you understand
what we are doing here. All right. Now. Let's do it again. I have
my layer of the bath, I will turn it on. This is here. I will turn on the texture, I place over it
it clipping mask. Select that, place it
to have a texture. Create another layer over, fill it with color and change its blending
mode to darken. Yeah, and make it a clipping
mask. The last one. We have this please
wave in between. I have my texture here. I will make it a clipping mask. Again, select the part of
the texture that I like that fits there, for
example, like this. Create a new layer,
fill it with color, make it again a clipping
mask and place it too. Darkened. Do we have the front? No. Let's do the front as well. I turned on this layer. I have a texture over it. I will turn it on at first. Make it a clipping mask. I will place it, I will make it bigger so that it fits here. Choose the part of the
texture that you like. Create another layer,
fill it with color, make it a clipping mask and change the blending
mold to darken. Now we have these
beautiful waves of all different
kind of textures. What we need to do is to add
shading and light to make it look better because this is now pre blending
into each other. See you in the next video, where we are going
to do exactly that.
7. Shadow And Light : All right, so let's just add light and shadow
to the waves. We are going to work with
another clipping mask over every single wave. So let's start
with the front one that I have here.
Can you see that? So I have one clipping
mask of the texture, one clipping mask of the color, and I will create another one, a new layer making a clipping
mask for light and shadow. Now, I have chosen
this light green color that I will just add
to this color palette. Choose that, and choose the shader from the brush sa
that comes with the class. I will make this brush
like 30% of opacity, 37 40, and make it 5% big, I will just go over the top. I will make it a bit bigger. Over the top of the wave. Can you say that it immediately
lights it, Lightns it. And I will choose
a darker color. This dark color. I will just add a shadow below on the bottom
of this wave. This is what I'm going
to do with each wave. Let's move on to the next one. Again, find the wave layer. You'll have the clipping
mask of the texture, the color, create
another layer over. Again, make it a clipping mask. Now choose the light color. Which wave is it?
Yeah, this is it. I will add light. On the top of this wave. Maybe into this behind
as well like in the top. I will choose a darker
color and darken it where it meets
this front wave. This is pretty contrastive now. This can be done a bit lighter with a less contrastive
texture as well. This came out contrastive, but I love it. I really love it. All right. Let's do it with
another wave. Here we are. Yeah, we already have that. So this wave here. Let me just show you. You're here. So we
have the texture, the color, create a layer, and make it a clipping mask. Now, choose a lighter color, grab the shader and
put light on top. You can make this brush
a bit smaller to create more contrastive or
less lightening light, and then choose the
darker version. And again, darken
it in the bottom so that it is really contrastive
where these waves meet. I love it. How
does it look like? It is incredible, right?
I love it so much. So let's move to the next wave. So it is layer six. Now. This is it. So we have the texture, the color, and I will
create another layer. Make it a clipping mask, choose the light color, the shader, and I will
light on the top. Like this. And choose the darker version to add shadow here down here. Cool. I think I need to add a
bit of a darkness here, but I just move on
to the next wave. So next wave is here. Again, I will just create
another layer, make it a clip, choose the light color,
and add lightness. Darkness as well. By this, you are creating so much contrast and here
where these two meet. You can add also a little bit of darkness so that it is
really contrastive. How do they look like here? Let's go to the final. Now we have two more. Okay. Which is no, we have
the final wave. Yeah. I will create another layer, make it a clipping mask, lighter color, and I will add
beautiful lightness here. You can soften the
texture as you can see if you just go through
the wave a bit, and you can add darkness. For example, here, I will
add darkness here as well, so that this front wave
is it can be seen. This darkness here a bit. This looks absolutely fantastic. Can you see this? It is
such an easy technique, but it looks super amazing. Now I will just show you in the next video how
to add the foam to the top and some details
to make it look even better. I will show you
how it look like. We are going to
add this foam and some cool textures or lines over details
that will make it more illustrated. See
you in the next video.
8. Adding Details: Okay. So in this video, we are going to add the
foam to these top waves. So we will have
free. Well again, work with the clipping mask. I will turn off the sketch now, so that we can really see
what we have created here. Let me just show you the
foam from a closer look. So it is basically this bay shape on top that has a little bit of
shading on the bottom. This will create theft that it is a three dimensional thing. So find the waves that have these backward movement.
This is the first one. So I will create another
clipping mask over. I will choose actually fully white and choose
the clean shaper. We choose that wave. This is the first
one. All right. So I will and a shape
like this on top. Will make it a bit nicer. I'll make it bit smaller. I mean the brush and I
will just add this shape. I will just change
the background color to a bit gray so that we can really see
what we are doing. We have this foam on top. Looks great, I can see that the base
shape is not perfect. I will just erase from it to
make it nicer, like this. I will go back to this shape
and adjust that as well. I will choose maybe this
light green and the shader, I will make it very small. I will just add a little bit of shading following these shapes here. Make it nice. And to have more contrast, I will just show you my drop shadow brush that is super cool. I will create a layer
below this shape, I will choose black and the drop shadow brush and just
draw drop shadow below in. It is immediately
like transparent and it blends nicely right in. I created this brush to make it really great to work with. While we have our first
foam looks great, right. If you think that it
is maybe too big. You can just select
and just make it a bit smaller, like this. Yeah. Super cool. Now let's move
on to the second wave. That was it. This. What I did. Another clipping mask. Hos White, the clean shaper. Again, just added
this foam shape. Maybe you choose this shader
with this light green and just add a bit of this shading
below this light green. C. Create a layer below it. Choose the drop shadow brush and black and add a drop shadow. You can layer this
drop shadow if you need to be like darker. Okay. And the last one is here. Again, I create another layer, make it a clipping
mask, choose white, and the clean shaper, and add the shape. I don't like the
shape, Let's try. I try to make it
like smaller waves and they're bigger
ones like this. It has this progressing
as well and its shape. It makes it more dynamic. It looks cool. I will
choose this green, the shader and this
little shading below. Okay. Create another
layer below it. Just the drop shadow, brush. Black and just add
the drop shadow. Okay. This looks super cool. What do you say?
I I just love it. Totally. Okay. What we can do. What I love to do is to
grab the sketching fancil. Just this light green. To add some details
to the water. You can just go to the layer
of this shading and light, or you can create
another clipping mask. And I love to just add
some lines like this with the sketching pencil
and this light green. So fun. I will just
select all of these, check out which I am in, and I will just op. I mean the light green. You can play with the
pressure sensitivity as well. Okay. Another one. I don't always know
which wave I am on. This catching pencil is really
good for these details. It also has texture. Just. Can you spend
some time with it? Have fun. Okay? Cool. Another one. And one at the last wave. Okay. This looks super amazing. Just check it out. One more tip. In my extended brash sat, there is this scribble effect
brush that I totally love. Let me just show
you it will create. A different effect, like this. I use this in another drawing and it is more of
the scribble effect. It looks so good, but it is just enough to use these lines. Let me show me you
the difference. Here, I use this s
quibble effect brush. I didn't even did
the lines and here, I just did the lines,
and it looks super cool. All right I hope
you like to see. In the next video, let's
just add some sky.
9. The Sky: All right, so let's just create some beautiful sky
behind the sea. I will create a new
layer below everything. And now, the sky that I love is when the sun has already set, and you have this little
pinkish color on the horizon, and then it goes
darker, darker, darker, into blue, and there are
already some stars showing. You have artistic
freedom again to create any colored sky you love. I will just show you mine, and I have picked colors for
it in the color palette. So I will just choose this
middle pinkish color. Choose the shader brush from
the brush that. Make it big. Actually, to this layer, at first, I will fill
it with this blue. I filled it with blue, and now I'm going in with that pink. I have this middle
pink, the shader brush, I will make it pig and
just add a bit of it here. Okay. Now, I will
choose this dark green, and I will go from the top and
just blend the two colors. So I'm going from this
green or greenish blue, and I will pick up
this middle blue as well to the middle to make it a bit smoother transition
between colors. And just play around
a little bit to make this smooth gradation from this light blue to
this darker one. You can even make
the brush bigger. I will just do that. Make this part a bit lighter. Just like this,
and I will go back with this little pink here. Maybe this lighter one
a little bit here. It also has this
smooth gradation. I think that this
is so beautiful. Just check out the sky. Again, what I did is I
filled it with blue, went in with the pink and tried to create a
smooth gradation from the dark green or blue to the lighter one
and just mix the colors. I did this like 100 times, it took me not that long
to get this effect. It might be a bit harder for you to create
this smooth gradation. In the next video, I will show
you how I draw my clothes, and then you will be
good to go to fill in anything into this scene to
create your illustration. I'll see you in the next video.
10. Clouds & Stars: All right, so let's
add some details. I will create another
layer on top. I will choose maybe white I will choose
the texture shaper. Now the texture shaper doesn't
create perfect shapes, but it has a bit of a texture. Can you see that?
I do my clouds in a way that I am
connecting circles. This is free circles. I will add another one,
for example, here. Circle, another circle, another
circle, another circle. These are two clouds. I will put them a bit on top. Yeah. I will alpac ds, and I will add texture. So I have this texturizer here. Maybe we can go even darker with this blue like this
in the middle. You have the texture, and I will create a new layer above, choose a white and
the sketching pencil, and I will add some spirals. Okay. You can go outside
of these shapes. This will make it more fun. Here is a spiral.
Here is a spirals. Here is a spiral.
And here is one. And Walla, I have some really
cool illustrated clouds. Now let's add some stars. Go to the luminous brushes that come with procreate,
choose the light pan, and just add some tl
stars, approximately here. You can add it to the
pink as well a bit. You can overdo it.
I usually overdo it because I love how
it looks. All right. And sometimes I just
add the moon as well. Like this. Or sometimes
I do it differently. I will just show you quickly. I will grab the clean shaper. I will create another
layer for the moon. I have a clean shaper. I will just hold down for this
shape to be like perfect. I will around it.
I will place it. I will make it glow. It is
not a good place maybe here. I will make it glow by duplicating it,
choosing the lower one, going to Gatan blur
at the adjustments, again, adjustments,
abler, and just blur it. Now I have a glowing
moon. This looks. Okay, This is our scene. In the next video, I
will show you how to use it in a circular
composition. See you there.
11. The Wooden Window: Okay. So I really love to use this scene in a circle, like, as it is like a
reflection from glasses, or you know this thing. This thing, as if
you would like, look from this one or
from a window of a boat. So I will just go back. And create a new layer on top. Hit the selection tool
and it the ellipse. Choose an ellipse, tap with your finger so that
it is a circle. Great. Now fill it with a color. Amazing. Create another
layer below this select. Actually, I'm going to add the colors what I
love to use for wood. Let me just put those here. I will just fill this brown. I will fill this circle
with brown as well. I will duplicate this circle, and now I will fill it
with this lighter color. Yeah, and make it a bit smaller. Let me just turn off
this so that we will have circle in a circle. As you can see, I have
snapping turned on so it snaps there, and I will actually select
this middle circle, select the layer below, free finger swipe and hit cut, and do this again
with the layer below. Select this circle. Click to this rectangle. Actually, you can turn it on. Free finger swipe
and again cuts. Now, turn this off. And now you have a
circular composition here. Now, what I'm going to do is
to alphg these both layers. Keep this light brown
color, choose the shader. And actually, I am going
to shade a little bit. Through this dark brown. I hope you can see
what I'm doing. Yes. This will immediately create this kind of a texture
that I love so much. For wood. Now I will add a bit to this
top circle as well. Just a little bit. Now I will choose
this dark brown again and the shader brush and go back to this back circle and add maybe even darker brown. Yeah, add a bit of a shadow around the
circle that we have here. Okay. So this is the mix of
a texture and shading. I will just smoothen it
just a bit like this. Looks cool. Smoothen
it a bit more. I will go back with this light
brown on this each thing. I is a bit lighter
and to the back one to make it a bit
smoother, nicer. And now here comes the trick. We are going to make this
look like it has wood. So I will create a layer
on top of that both. Choose catching pencil. The way I create wood is
that I create this wood and texture with basically
drawing lines. I'm drawing waves
and then create a little like spiral
and then waves. Actually, this is
pretty meditative. I will just go go
through the whole, and with these random
lines and spirals, you will see that it will
actually look like wood, and it is so fun. I love this
illustration technique. You can spend a lot
of time on this. I'm a little bit
hing through it. But yeah, can you see this? Super amazing. Now we went in
a circle and for the back, we can actually
keep this layer and just do it like vertically. I will just draw like this. You can do it really lightly. Okay. Now it just looks like
you are in a boat looking outside the window and you have this
beautiful scene. How amazing is that? I hope you like these
illustration techniques, and I can't wait to see what you will create
in this class. Let's just wrap up
what we have done in this in the next. See you there.
12. Final Thoughts: Okay, Wow. Congratulations.
You finished the class. I'm so happy that you stick
with me till the end. I'm sure that you can
be proud of your work. Show off, so go to the project gallery and
add your class project. Also, if you plan to
share it on social media, make sure to tag me so
that I can share it in I'm usually so proud
of you guys, so I pro. It was a pleasure
to have you here. I'm so looking forward
to see what you create and see you in my
other classes as well. Happy creator.
