1. 00 Intro lt: Hi, I'm Engy, the writer and artist from New Zealand. Welcome to my class on how to paint guys in watercolor in this course I'm going to share with you my forced a process that I use when I want to paint what he told subjects. We'll also go through some ways that you can add various media if you want to kind of paintings for detail over stylization. If you're new to my class is welcome. 2. 01 Materials lt: So for this class, the materials are very simple and there are quite flexible. So you're going to need first off either your journal like a watercolor. What a diary or a journal that you might use. I'm currently using the small one, but you could use big ones. You could also use color paid just sheets. I buy the big sheets of thing. I tear them into what? Besides I like now The reference I'm going to use for this class is this gorgeous book. It's called the But If I House On It's written by Katy Flint and the illustrations are done by unless too low. And I picked up this book in the library, actually for my water. But the illustrations in here just so beautiful I've used I've had this book out many times before, so I'm gonna use This is my reference material. Today you can use Google. You can use any books that you have anything that you have of interest that's wonderful and that get you excited about ratifies. The idea is not to do a realistic rendering off to see, So I'm not going to copy these illustrations exactly. But as I walk you through the steps. You'll see where and how you can change, especially if you're a complete beginner. Ratifies consumables intimidating. But using these steps, and I'm going to show you, we're gonna break it down and you'll be able to. So for the first step, you're going to also need a pencil and an eraser to draw your gun supplies with think the next step is going to be the painting. So for that, I'm going to use water colors. This is watercolor, so I'm gonna use my watercolors. You can use even a basic beginner's kit. My first watercolor state waas basic 12 colors from winter in Utah in a little palate. Even that told you. Because, like I said, we're not copying the ratifies exactly. So you could use whatever colors you have on four brushes. Obviously depends on how big you draw your butterflies, but I'm going to be using a medium. This is a size seven on going to be using a slightly smaller one. Nothing precedes the numbers of drug. This is six, and in a really small this is optional, really small little line of rush and then for the black because they ones are going to have a lot of black, so you could choose either just India ink with really small brush. And sometimes I used bigger brushes while depending on the battlefront so you could use India ink. Or you could use a pin. So I got a figment lining up for the fine bits. I mean for the white stick. I'm going to be using any prospecting, but you could use a white Joep in, or you could use White Wash. Or you could use what acrylic ink, in which case you just need a little brush to go with it again. Other than that, you need a basic jar of water and a piece of kitchen toe to die of your Russia. Just by sequel, it's kind of supplies.
3. 02 Selecting Images lt: So I just wanted to show you quickly how I'm going to choose the butterflies that I'm going to paint because if you are really a beginner and you might think that better plants are intimidating to Benton because I have followed a detail that I want to show you a few things to help you out of the process. So as I paged through the book deal obviously many beautiful ones. And when you are a big you know, you could think that some of them are just kind of intimidating. So when you choose them, what do you do it on Google? Just put that out of your mind. For now, I'm going to show you a busy way that you can paint a beautiful, colorful one if you like. We can start that something really basic. So they are fueling here that I thought would be really nice to start off with from the young section. So these are like this one. Here is what we're gonna start through. That's a nice simple one, and you gets up to you if you want to coffee mind, and I'll put this in the reference section for you to download. So if you really want to, just wanted me step by step. People copies. But you can play of the colors as well so we could do a yellow gunmakers. But we could also do other colors. And then when you choose your butterflies, you must also look at the different shapes so we can get some of them from the side, some of them with wings open some of the with the wings closed. So these little ones here, you know, the legs are in white and our paper is going to be right. And today we're not gonna be doing any background. So in that case, you're not gonna do background either. Just make them that sort of thing. And then I also thought it would be nice to create some of these lava and eggs and cannibalism things that would be so when you're choosing your subjects now, to draw, put out of your mind completely the difficulty of the subject and just choose the ones that you really like and try. Find a few that have a different sort of body shapes and orientations and different wing shapes there someone or just like this one is quite different from the others, and some of them are really must tell your bits like this one. Try find a variety of different colors and different shapes, and if you like, you can download mine from the class. It'll be in the reference section resource a section, and then you can affect things along with.
4. 03 Drawing outlines lt: So the next step is obviously to draw about the flies. It doesn't matter where you drew them. We're not worried about composition or anything. We're just practicing butterflies. So if you're going to scare knees in off to its, you can digitally cut them out and re arrange them into a pattern or just whatever you want to do with him. So for now, we're just practicing butterflies, and you control them whatever you like. I'm using an H pencil in. H would be better. It's a hard of late, and you want to do it quite likely. Try to minimize the amount of erasing that you're doing on your wall color paper. Okay, so the thing about butterflies is obviously you want both sides to be even. So the 1st 1 that I'm going to start doing is this beautiful big yellow one here. And then I'll probably do some of these from the side as well. And then we'll move on to another one. Yeah, so in general the butterflies have a little rounded but at the top, and they kind of have the butterfly shave. And some of them are a bit different, little fatter, a little bit less pronounced. Then they have this girl at the many, but which is a bit because we're not going for realism here. Just sort of draw it out. You like, roughly that shape, kind of not very different from how we did it at school. And right now I'm not going to draw in anti now or legs. It's just the body and the wings. So we're not draw the butterflies. I do. Take note of we The wings attached to the top wings are quite close to the top. And the bottom one God have come out. Yes, is a nice little gap here, but it comes out quite low down on the body. Safe drawing is not your strong, strong point. They just take note of these basically, um
5. 04 Layer 1 lt: Okay, so now we're ready to paint up with Spotify. I've drawn all of my heart. You are the ones that I want to faint just very basic. And the pencil marks are quite dark. If you was a dog as well the worry. We can just rub them out a little bit as we go. So the 1st 1 I said, we're gonna start with this this yellow one, because it's very easy. But because we don't want to copy somebody else's illustrations, exactly. Were just using it for practice and four inspiration. If you are a riel beginner and this is very intimidating for you, I would suggest that you try copy these colors, but only because it teaches you about your colors and which ones might match so that if you're interested in doing realistic painting, you can start training eyes to look at the different colors and see which ones might be the right ones. As I said before, because we're copying somebody else's illustrations. If you're gonna do that, he's don't use it for professional purposes. That's obviously only for practice. So So I'm going to use a light blue at the bottom and then a darker blue at the top for the little splotches. I'm going to use my bigger brush because it's a fairly big butterfly. And because I'm only practicing, I'm not in order to much about painter lines. I wouldn't be doing anything with these off to it, So I'm going to choose quite a few blues on my palette. This is a nice soft civilian do. I'm going to put civilian at the bottom and then I'll choose something dog to go on top just now. Even this one here might even use this one. This is a manganese blue, which is really quite gorgeous. Okay, so once you've got your countries, get your life first, make it nice and watery. One thing I always think about when I paint is the subject itself. So ratifies a quite light and every little creatures, so I wouldn't want to put heavy strokes off paint on them. So we're not playing. That would keep the paint watery and keep my brush marks watery. And as you could see in the picture, the whole thing Waas The whole butterfly was yellow. So when you're planning, how you going to painted as a beginner? you would start thinking of your life colors moving up to the door colors. And so I'm going to paint the whole background off this butterfly in the light color, and then I'm going to add the door colors on top and at the bottom here. They're not real definite markings, like some butterflies like here. They have quite definite markings, or these red splotches are quite definitely there, sort of blended in. So I'm going to add them on. Bring the paint underneath story. Okay, so you you'll notice that a lot, but applies the one that I'm using. They have black as an so because of that. It doesn't really matter if you paint both the wings at the same time, because we will separate the areas like with, so you have to move fading fast and allow the wings. Or you can stop the toast to what kind of we generally don't outline and in. But that's a small area. I do that so again because it's a natural subject that painting the color doesn't have to be exactly even add to make it a bit uneven. Okay, so not going to choose my slightly darker blue and added in. If you added in, if you're paint is really quite, wait, so if you can see here at the bottom, it's really quite weight. If I had any dark in, it's really just going to dispose quite a lot. Where's this top wing? You can see the paint is starting to dry just a little bit, and that's a bit of time to add it. Not been it's too dry, but just if it's very weight stepping on how much water you used. If you're a beginner than in the beginning, it could be quite hard to decide how much water to use. But when you're adding a second color in on top, do you generally want to have less water on the brush and in the paint that in your first layer? Otherwise, it's going to form. Those cauliflowers were the painters. Spreads of the water just pushes apart and you get this funny little lines, which is not always bad. It's just Do you want more? Don't you want them? You have to decide. So I'm going to add the top splotches here and they will dispose. They're not gonna be at as except as in the picture, but that doesn't matter. It's actually quite a nice kind of. So it because you're not going for realism. They don't have to be exact. But generally you want two wings to kind of look similar. So if you're putting a splotch here in one in the same place on the other side and at the bottom, that kind of sort of went up from the ages. I'm just going to add some color, likely at the age, push it up a bit. You can see on the picture. Has that sort of Patteson just like that take a little bit on the paint on this brush is technically lace. I deleted businessman water on this brush thing in the first layer so we shouldn't have cut flowers. And if we do, that's also okay, So that's the first layer. So we know when I do detail things like this. I have this step process. The first step is to decide what you want to draw on and draw. The second step is to plan out your layers in color, so because this butterfly the colors, I wanted them to blend in two layers at the same time, But now I'm going to leave that to dry, and we want to the water color the foods layer off the other butterflies. So this one at the bottom that I drink yet is these little guys over here, and they're quite cute, Good yellow. And they got something like a brownish color over the your gold opinion with you've got, you could add in it again. You don't have to make them yellow, and the markings are quite little scribbles. So So you can decide if you want to do your base layer and then the markings in another color while its weight, like we like we did with the first part of life. Or you can wait for it to dry and then use kind of a dry brush to make these markings on top. Or you can use wash. It's entirely up to you. If you're a beginner, there's no really right a wrong way. There's just different effects that you get so you can choose the effect that you want. So I'm going to use a nice Oreo in yellow in the game, just painting my things. You can do both at the same time, you can see uplinked some white spots say that's fine. You can cover it completely or you can leave it. Okay, so I'm going to add my detail in when this layer is dry, so that's all I'm going to do. This ratifies the first layer of yellow and wait for it to dry. So the next one that we're going to do is this fat little sausage shape at the bottom here . And that is actually this little guy. Pale tussle, moth caterpillar so you can see he's a regional shape is just like a little fat sausage. That's all I dream. But when you look at these colors, he's got some green and some yellow as the base like we could get any of the black, not just ignore that so you could look at the actual color is green and yellow with some white in between, and they're kind of irregularly spaced. So so he was gonna be feeling easy. If you're gonna use the same colors green and yellow, that's fine. We'll use the same yellow is added on that. But if I and just sort of make irregular markings with it, you can see on the butterfly on the on the caterpillar. They're not particularly in any order. Okay, so I'm going to do the green bits in between while the yellow store weight and so they will blamed If you don't want them to blame, if you want the more definite thing wait for your yellow to dry and then you greeny. So I'm just going to added in. Yeah, but very likely, because there's also some white spots in there, so some of it, probably in some of it, won't. And this is great. If you're a beginner to practice how much water and how much color you have on your brush. If you have too much water, it will just seep into the paint next to it as it is, the ones touching rule blend. But the ones in the middle should have been too much. Yeah, and then we leave that one to dry as well. So the next one that I chose first was one that has quite a lot of white in it. And this illustration, the way Alice illustrated it, I think it's not quite beautiful. So for our first layer, really, all we're gonna do is add these lines in. So whichever color you choose, that's the only thing you're gonna do again. You're gonna look at your lines and see that they quite wavy entin and they kind of follow on on each other with each other across the wings, almost like off circles. So they do join up except for the foods to at the top. Don't. For this, I'm going to use my slightly smaller breath. So the color I've chosen for it is a connected and gold to go around. Now again, it's important that you don't have too much water on your brush. Otherwise, it's just gonna take forever to drive. And they're just small light. So we just started talking and they're kind of ridiculous. He just makes it logically shapes, and you could do these in any color. You want it. This is more than a nice soft brown mind's golden color, and that's literally all you have to do for parts of you. Can we want to the next one. So the next time we're gonna do is this little guy here and he looks very interesting, I thought, and as a beginner, it might be a little bit challenging with patches of color. So, um, I'll show you how we can start. So I'm just going to use my connected gold again and put in the markings where she's put them so you can look at the reference victory if you want, and they don't have to be exact just random. They really all for references. So instead of the green, I'm going to use a connected and think and she's got little marks just down the bottom of his body. Yes, I'm just going to make the brand marks. I don't really want to touch and blamed because their distinct and these are the kind of thing that you want to notice. You don't want to copy them what your picture has on it, but they don't state I'm going to leave it at that. I'm going to add any more to that. Later he will see on the picture shares of red splotch of the back. I'm just going to leave their completely to leave these two next one is this little pink and yellow one? Yeah, and that is quite cute because the two countries that all next to each other, but they're not blending so So I'm going to stick to those colors just for now. We're going to go back to my Rio yellow, make it nice and watery, but not two or three people. You don't want too much water. Otherwise, they're really going to be a big nice because I'm going to use my connected. Didn't think again, as I think that's quite a bright thing because it's quite a nice soft. But I like when I could answer. You'll see the butterfly has a wing on top and then being at the bottom, we're going to do the top one first, which is kind of from the top on an irregular little H and a dream. It doesn't matter how you make your age just almost. It's irregular. That kind of comes around here and has a little bit of it. You get to the bottom and then the same on the other side. So when you break your subjects down like this, it's a lot easier to try and do a complicated, detailed subject. If you just think in terms of one step at a time and you just do that statement gives you some breathing space to think about what you're gonna do next. Okay, so even so for this step, that's it. You're gonna leave it there. We can tell you what we could do the under wings now, because we're gonna have the black after it so you can actually do the undoing as well, which is also being so if we didn't have the blackout finds out we're gonna add, then you have to wait for this to dry, all right? And that's it, then you even okay. And then the last one that I wanted to show you was this little guy. Yeah. I thought I chose him because I got a lot of color going on and quite a lot of black, which could be intimidating at first. So I'll show you how we tackle this one. Now, you've got two choices. When you do this one, you can either put a blend of colors that you like underneath, and then do the black over the top afterwards. Or you could do the black first and then do the colors off to its, which is not really the right order to do things in a bit. You can play with it. So so when I did this one in my sketchbook, I did the black first, and then I folded in with colors off to it. So you can see they're not really the same color says in the book. But I prefer these. You can use any colors, so I'm going to show you how to illiterates. We're gonna use the black. And they were going to do the colors off to its for the black that I used. I used India ink. Just so all you want to take a note off is we. The black is you don't really need to draw in a little shapes because we just do the my you like. So the black. I'm gonna use my smaller brush for this, not the line of rush. It'll take too long, but the smaller brush So the blackest kind of what's going on this a minute to my pay drugs have got so many little weak butterflies around you be easier to do it this way. Okay, so the black goes all the way around the top wing, so you just go through and I like using India ink because with a brush, because you get uneven Hinds and it goes like a dry brush sometimes, so it doesn't look so aesthetic consorted. Okay, so for the top wing, she has a little spice down. You can leave just faces you want now, just for the kind of its it's just in. The race is going to be. They just take your ink and you coming around those. So they were all you can see that I have not stuck to her illustration Here we heard colors are away so you don't have to either. Just play with your India in leaves some gaps open. Put some others in. Just do the blackbirds first. That's essentially your first layer down. After this, we'll go back and do a second later on everything.
6. 05 Layer 2 lt: So you've got the first layer of all your butterflies done, and they look a bit scraggly, and that's just perfect. The next step is to go over the next day, whatever that might be for that particular butterfly so far, 1st 1 we've done the splotches that we've done the base layer of paint on the darker color . If you want it darker color to be darker, you can go over it to make a dog, just blending the edges nicely. But if you're really a beginner, I would just leave it at that. The next layer. The next step for this butterfly would they need to do the body and we can see only the bottom but is actually colored is a little bit of color in the top. Yeah, that's fine. And it's all in black. So been to use my manganese blue used in the singles and just do the bottom. But that's for too much water. If you have too much water, you can suck it up with a dry brush. You just have it on a piece of kitchen, so just have your brush on a piece of kitchen tell, and it will suck up that water, if you nicely. Okay, so I used to paint with his body out just a little bit of blue. But it doesn't matter, because we're gonna put the black. I just like to blend in some of the door kind around. Okay, So once you've done well the color for your ratify, the next step is to all the black bits first. So you do the drawing that you do your base layer watercolor. If there's any other colors you're gonna add on top will get to them. Otherwise, the next thing is your black. So I'm gonna use India ink. But honestly, you could use for this butterfly because it's only outlined and really only the body. That's got a bit of color in it. You could use a brush and India ink. You could use a pin you could try using wash. It could use Blackwater call if you want. I just prefer India ink and a little brush. I like the irregularity of the line so we can see in the picture that it's completely outlined. Everything that's lovely and coming in the body of it. So and again, don't worry about going exactly on the blinds. Just go as you go. Okay, so that's the 1st 1 with the black done. You can see I've got some white space is here with the wings should attach to the body. That's fine for sketchbook practice. That's really fine. My brush with a little bit dry here on the body, which I liked. And I did that because the body is kind of hearing. So if you have a bit of a dry brush, it gives a bit of texture. That's one. So we'll do the antenna. And in general, the antenna is just a little line, and it's got a factor. Splotch of the end. I did not really want to dry brush for that, but go over it. A little fatter splotch of the bed, Um, and then on the picture, she's got some nice veins and some black markings in the wings. You can use that as inspiration. What I really liked about it was the little dots at the ages of the wings. So I'm going to include those, and I'm going to randomly put the dots they're not. They're not going to be attached to anything, and then I'm going to use my brush fairly dry and just do random sort of benefits, not drawing like that, Then you just go very likely and just your random little lines for texture. That's the nice thing about not copying somebody else's. Were completely is that you can use it for inspiration and then just do anything with it. And you can see these the nice dry brush effect. You could even use a pencil for this if you didn't like the dry brush. We just make it a bit later. So I'm going to add a little bit more black. Yeah, just because I actually start just because I lifters caps, they could fill it in with blue paint if I wanted to. That's another option. Other option. So if you have that ability, repaint so that's the black layer done, and we're going to leave it at that, and we want to unexpected fly, which is going to be this girl guide the bottom. So again we can see he's pretty much outlined everything, and he's a Maliki's are wide, so we're gonna black. You can color them in black there, so fine, it's really up to you. So when you draw your insects legs, the butterfly legs. They basically have a little fat piece of the top sort of a medium joint at the bottom. And then I do just go skinny and have open. So without trying to be anatomically correct, they're really good. He's actually a little buddy sticking to the bottom. So if you were going to fight a shop, your images, you could fix it a little extra fat leg, then. Okay, so his face is yellow. Just a little touch of new quickly at my plaintiff, My in store black store weight. But doesn't matter. Even your body young there's such small. But that wouldn't matter if you're black and then he's got little antenna coming out the top, and he's actually got no preposterous hanging down. These are nice little details to God for what you're doing, you drawings. No, I've done this guy in the reverse order. Did the black first before I did the second color off splotches on his wings. Natural, right, because I'm going to use some wash for his splotches. You could use a doctor. What color? I just got a gold wash which allowed to use. I'm going to add that, and he's just got random little splotches here and there. So I'm just going to add a few people on Smaller just like that. That's all you need. So I'll come back to him when he's done when he's dry and we'll do the lost black bits on his wings and around his. So this little guy's gonna be next, the one that's mostly in white again. He's gonna be outlined in black, but only the tops of these wins the race star little lines. Like I said, it's still for online and he's do his eyes on the side. He's, and you just have to keep in mind that you don't touch any of the way, and then the rest are just soaking. You can use paying for this if you want to. It's entirely after your stock of this side and just make loans. And of course you can see all my insulin Australia, because this is just my okay, and then we draw in the I'm just going to make mine as a solid line, as opposed to the one in the picture, and I'm just gonna put white stripes on it so you see, the body on this butterfly also has just touched off whatever color used on the wings, so you could add a touch off your color on the body. And I've got a feeling Dr Russia, for the bodies. It's based to stick two like a dry brush because they're all theory and dry brush gives you a nice texture. Okay, and then that guy has got little black lines away over his body. So again you could use a pin or you could just carry on with you Russian ing and they really are quite small and randomly place. Just make little marks, really trying not to get them in a straight line. And that's it. So that that. But if I was completely done, it's as easy as that just for those state by state. And if you don't like the color, look, I'm not particularly keen on the connected and gold. When I chose this time, I think the last time I used a soft bed number back up much nicer, but you could use any color, and that's what sketchbook practices there for you to choose, which colors you like and which ones you don't like so, but he's essentially done. You've got no more to do on him moving onto the next one. Which is this little guy? Yeah, again. He's just going to be outlined in that and his face is going to be covered in and he's structures will be outlined in black as well. So that's this guy Done. You'll see off, outlined all his splotches in the picture. It's not the same, but like I said, do as you like. And he had some black lines over his body for texture. And there's a quite nice to so added those. And it's a simple Is that so? He's actually he's nearly done. Will do the white light off to it so we could move on to our little sausage done. Yeah, so you'll notice on the picture that he has some black lines quickly lines going over his body, and he is not really outlined. He's just got random spice going different directions and a black splashier. He does have a global raid at India, so you can interpret that you like you can include the raid or leave it allergy connect different color. You can outline him somewhat thick thin lines. It really up to you. So I'm going to give him an sort of, like a little bit of an outline, but not the precise one. And then he's got this split show on the lines that go across. But before I do the lines that go across, I'm gonna do the little lines. And if you look at your picture, you will see that he's got some shorter lines close to his body, and he's got some longer wise working out. But really, they should just be random. You have some of your lines starting in the middle of the bodies, some starting at the age, so they're not just surrounding, okay? And that's essentially that guy done so you could do with a pin. I think I didn't want the pain in my sketchbook that they used to brush as well. I used to brush for this one. The brush does make a bit of a driver she picked, which is not really what you want for the Spike Innis. But if you have enough goods find okay, so moving on. We going to do this little pink one here? Okay, So this being when we conceded, Just got the two colors. We've done the pink, whichever color you chose. And now we're going to do the yellow, which is the Roberts in the Wings and the body again. You don't want your brush to wait, just filling these little good see that ever happening. But that's fine. But just remember that what color is transparent, So you will see the pink underneath, so trying to keep it sort of in those spaces. Okay, for this little guy's antenna, I'm just going to do to think he's got short antenna so committed to yellow, that's his next layer. So we have to wait for him to drive before we could do that. What? The black layer. So while we wait for him to drive when we got to this butterfly at the bottom so we did the black first and we're gonna fill it in with color and honestly, canoes in ecology like this is quite it. That's the nice thing about very colorful subjects that you're not trying to capture. Realistically, if you really get a chance to play with him, choose colors those combinations you like, and just for them in if you don't want the green. Indeed. And don't put a day. You could leave some but white. It's up to you. Okay. So what? You're folding your colors on his wings? You cannot wait for him to dry, and then we'll do the body off to It's so my wings wings a bit funny here with my think they have a big legs at the bottom instead of dainty twenties. That's okay. If I was going to photo shop, I could easily make them a little bit, so that's fun. Okay, So going back to this little one, Yeah, we have to do the black lines on his wings. And for that, I'm going to use a slightly dry brush. You could try things like a pencil or, um, talk fast. Or maybe if you wanted to. And he's just got a few lines. Don't know. My brushes quite drying up. Just like that. Texture. Yeah. I mean, of course he has this I Okay, so that's all we needed to do for his black. So he is ready for the last layer, and then we have to come back to this little pink and yellow one. So this one needs a little black outline as well. You could do that again. Use a paintbrush or pin if you like. And then her little body waas also nickel his You know it'll raise. So that's all the black done, except for this butterfly whose body needs to be black. But the painters drive it somewhat when we put a bit of a dry brush, my bet on the nomad, even, and just a bit of colors. You could leave it like that with the white because I like it. And again, my brush is fairly dry. It's not really wit. Okay, So once you finished all the black on your butterflies, then you're ready for the lost step, which is to edge the white.
7. 06 Details lt: Okay, so the last step in completing your butterflies is the white details. This is the thing you do very lost. Just to recap the steps, you draw the round first, and then you add your first layer of one color. Then you add any second layer bits that they might be headed. And then you dual the blackbirds that outlining the black colors, whatever. And then lastly, you do the white detailed. So as long as you work in layers and you do one step at a time, it should be quite manageable. Even if you are an absolute beginner, though, the white that are going to use is a white pasta pin I've recently discovered he's quite wonderful. If you have, when you just have to serve comfort a little bit and then you'll see the white. And I think it's actually a critic in Catania. Wide critic in coming up. Otherwise, you could use normal white acrylic ink with a little brush. If you like, you could use what wash all you could use.
