I will show you many options using just watercolour, watercolour and gouache (or white pen) and also another option using watercolour and masking fluid.

This class can be taken by experienced watercolour artists or beginners.

In this class we will observe mushrooms, in real life or photos of them and learn how to take the textures and values of them. We will practice throughout all the lessons, starting with the mushrooms sketching and by the end of this class you will be able to paint your favorite mushroom.

Pick your favorite mushrooms and learn how to draw and paint them using watercolours!

I hope this class opens a new door to you to start exploring new colours and textures that Mother Earth brings us.

I'm Fio Ortecho. Artist based in New Zealand. I have always been an artistic soul, but life took me another way and I studied Industrial Engineering, career that I practiced for almost 10 years. It was not until mid-2019, when I started drawing and painting with watercolour and I fell in love with this medium. Since then, I paint almost every day and lots of opportunities appear.

I was raised in Peru, surrounded by the bright colours founding in the latin and pre-inca culture, which inspired my style. My main subjects are culture, symbolism, botanical and feminine power.

I sell my art online, in local markets in New Zealand and I had my very first solo exhibition and shop in March this 2023.
I also teach in person workshops that help me to know the most common doubts o... See full profile

1. Introduction: Hello, I'm Fio. a watercolour artist and teacher. I am very excited to bring a class to you all about painting mushrooms using watercolors. And why mushrooms, well, they are my favorite being of nature for painting. Actually, I don't know why I didn't create a mushroom painting class before. I sell my mushrooms designs on products like calendars. Mugs. And I also use Mushrooms as part of the composition of most of my paintings. Painting mushrooms are such a fun way to explore different textures and colors. This is a beginner friendly class. So even if you never paint with watercolors before, you're gonna be able to follow along just fine and create an awesome mushroom illustration. and If you're already a watercolor Pro, you will get my best tips for creating detailed illustrations. I am going to walk you through my entire process from the beginning to the end, showing you how I gather inspiration, what are the main things to consider when sketching my mushrooms before painting some watercolor techniques and much more. At the end of this class, your project will be used these techniques to create your very own mushroom illustration that you can share on the student's project gallery. As a bonus, we are going to create a composition using mushrooms ready to hang on your wall. Feel free to share this one as well. So let's get creative. 2. Supplies: The supplies that you will need for today's class are pretty simple. You will need watercolor, paper. Watercolors in pans or tubes, or even liquid watercolors colors are your choose. But I would like to mention that you don't need to have a wide variety of colors. Even with just the primary colors, you are all fine for today's class. Brushes for watercolor. This is important as they are made to get a good amount of water because their bristles are quite soft. I recommend you to have round brushes, at least two sizes. One number four or six, then number one or 0.0. for details. Of course, you will need water. I like to use two jars of water. One to keep it clean for active my colors, and the other for cleaning my brushes. When I change colors. Paper towel or a towel, like mine that has many years with me, as you can notice, pencil, eraser. If you are able to have this soft eraser, better. And, I also for this class, will use a white pen. This one is a Posca one. Also masking fluid. As we're going to use masking fluid, we will need also brushes for manipulate the masking fluid. And they don't have to be your fancy watercolor brushes. They have to be very old brushes. You don't mind to damage. Also, you will need a palette. Of course, we sketch before painting with watercolors. So I'm gonna use this block, that is a toned paper color. You can use this or you can also use, you don't need a sketchbook. You can use just Sheets, is up to you. Anything that works for you for sketching is good, is just the sketching. Our project would be the watercolor painting. Alright, so now that you have all your watercolor supplies, Let's gather some inspiration. 3. Gathering Inspiration: Inspiration doesn't exist. No, I'm just kidding. But like Pablo Picasso said, Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. So let's score, instead of weight and desperation come to us, not our door. Let's go though side and try to find some inspiration. As the topic of this class is all about painting mushrooms. Let's go to find some fungi inspiration. We have different options here. We can go for a walk after Raman day and see what we can find under the trees. Usually mushrooms. Are there ready forecasts? When I go out for a walk, I always made sure I think reference photos I can use for my Outlook. So do it. But please don't get Mother Earth. Another option. And this one is one of my favorites, is going to your local library and borrow a book related to our class stock. I love the name ready, and I search first on the library website what other books I want to borrow. I usually get more than just one book, as you can see. So let's go and find the mushroom references you want to use for today's class. I will do the same. You can find more information about nationals in the books, like in here, parts of the typical mushroom. In the next lesson, we want to explore watercolors techniques that we have as when painting mushrooms. So see you then. 4. Watercolour Techniques: Let's activate our watercolors. If you have a set of watercolors in bands, just simply add some water. I like to use this spray. And if you have watercolor tubes, just take a bit of painting on your palette. Not much because watercolors are completely different from other mediums like acrylics or oils. We actually paint with water and just a bit of pigment. So with your wet brush, add water on your palette and mix it with your paint. You will know that it is ready. It's not too thick. You can see a drop on your brush, but not necessarily dripping. For activate other color, just clean your brush using water and a towel. For these exercises, I suggest you to have two colors ready at least. So let's start with wet on dry technique. For this, I'm using my round brush, question number six. So I paint a circle with one color. Then clean your brush and make another circle just with water. And after that at paint, you will see how different is when your paper is wet. Now, make another circle, just like the first one, but instead of let it dry, clean your brush and take the other column and added when you're sick old is still wet. Repeat and play with this technique using two colors. Now, try different shapes. For the next exercise, we're going to add the second color only on one side of your shape. Clean your brush and tried to mix the two colors. Repeat this exercise. Now try a smaller brush and add some fine lines. Check the difference on how much paint you get with a tiny brush. Repeat this as well. I use this when I want to add little details like veins. When the previous color is still wet, it gives us a unique result. Now, paint a darker shape and then clean your brush and dry it. With your clean and dry brush. Take some paint on your paper. You will see that the dry brush absorbs the paint on your paper, giving it some life. I'm exaggerating here, but I want you to show what I mean with this technique. I use this a lot of my paintings. Last but not least, let's practice brush control. So tragic, different brush sizes and make thick and fine lines with them. Long and short lines as well. Get used to your brushes and check what you can get with them. In the next lesson, we're going to start sketching our mushrooms. See you then. 5. Sketching Mushrooms: Let's start sketching our mushrooms. Start using just a pencil and don't add much details here. Observe your mushroom reference and draw only the outlines. Now, we will identify the values that our mushroom has. For this, use your black ink, pen and paint the darkest values that you see on your reference. Then with a white pen at the bright parts of your mushroom. This step is important as it will be easy to choose our colors and paint beautiful mushrooms. For sketching with black and white pens, I like to use toned paper as provides all the meat dance, the ones that you will get with watercolor later. Absurd the details of each mushroom and identify if they should. We paint with black or white paint. Don't stress about the colors. Just choose between black and white. Sketch your mushrooms and see you in the next lesson to start painting them. 6. Watercolour and White pen Mushrooms: Let's paint our first mushrooms. Start with the outline drawing of your mushroom reference. Don't put pressure on the pencil as the word color paper is delegated. Don't add details on this draw. As we're going to add all the details with watercolor and the white paint. Making your colors at least two. So you can play with the values as we did in our sketches before. Use the wet on wet technique that we practiced before as well. Also, use your brush to make different strokes for different results at the light and shadow. When you think it is required. Change your brush to add a tiny details. And when the watercolor is completely dry, you can add the white details with the Posca paint. For the next mushroom. That process is similar. Observe your reference and start drawing the outline of your mushrooms, then activate your watercolors and start painting. In this case, we use many layers to get the result that I want because I need to show that they are many mushrooms once over others. So to emphasize this volume by going to work with the many layers of painting. As we did with the previous mushroom. We're going to add details with the finest brush. And then when the watercolor is at the desk with a Posca pen. In the next lesson, we're going to paint three different mushrooms using only watercolor. See you there. 7. Only Watercolour Mushrooms: Using only water color for painting requires to work more on the values. So it is important to check regularly our sketches and photo references. Prepare as many colors and values that you'd need for achieve the result that you want. In this mushroom, we're going to add short dashes as a texture on the stamp, same as we did on our sketch, but this time, with your finest brush and watercolor, use a darker color than the background to see this texture. On the darker areas make your color more intense with less water. For this mushroom, we're going to take some pigment to create a brighter area on the cap of the mushroom. For this, we're gonna use our dry brush as we did in our watercolor exercises. And for the details, use the famous brash. But remember to always wait until the previous layer is dy. Otherwise, you will get a wet on wet technique or salt. And we don't want that. Now. For the veil mushroom, we will use white watercolor. You can also use wash here if you want. And if you have wash. The key here is work on layers as we did before. Be patient and enjoy the process. We are almost done with our mushrooms at timing. Why the details with Bay thick white painting. In the next lesson, we're going to start painting our last mushroom. See you there. 8. Watercolour and Masking Fluid Mushroom: Okay, Now it's time to paint our last mushroom. This is the most popular mushroom and the first thing we have to do as we did before for the previous ones, is observe the values that it has. How many colors we need to prepare. Maybe we can use a color that we are really used before. Remember to observe also your sketch as it is easier to identify value slider. For this mushroom, we will use masking fluid. So I can take advantage of this lesson for showing you how to work with this material. First, shake it well, and remember to use your old or cheap brushes here, not the one that you use before for painting. Very careful at a bit of masking fluid on your palette. Here, I added too much. We're going to use only a bit of this material. So this amount actually is not necessarily always close your bottle and start painting the white dots of your mushroom. Just the same as if you were painting with color close to the bottom of that gap. Make more dots and even smaller ones while the masking fluid is drying. Let's observe one more time some photo references here you can see that texture that this stem has and also the different values. On our reference mushroom. It doesn't have this texture, but we can add it. Remember, it is just a reference. So make the colors for your stem and start painting it. Be careful with AI area closer to the masking fluid. At shadows and light. When the masking fluid is completely dry, we can start painting our mushroom cap. With your finance brush. Add some texture on the stem. If you think it is necessary. You can also add a second layer on your mushroom. When you finish leather, whatever color dry, and add shadows on each side of the mushroom cap. Don't remove the masking fluid jet. Makes sure the last details that you just add our try to remove the masking fluid. I usually use this part of the mechanical pencil to remove it. Very careful and one-by-one, dot by dot. Remove all the masking fluid and then delete any pencil marks that you have. Voila, you'll have your pretty mushroom already. See you in the next lesson where we're going to start working on our composition. 9. Bonus: Sketching Mushrooms Composition: Remember everything we have seen in class? In this case, as it is not only a mushroom illustration but a composition, I like to add more elements. So I, I smell some leaves. I'm also a mom to give it an extra magical spell. Sketch the values you want on your final painting. Use the black and white technique I showed you in the sketching lesson. In the next lesson, we're going to start painting our mushroom composition. See you there. 10. Bonus: Painting Mushrooms Composition: Okay, So let's start painting our composition. For this, I decide to use a completely different color because I wanted something more magical rather than realistic. I think that we can explore more options choosing and no realistic color. So use all the techniques that we have practiced in this class alone, the lessons at many layers to add shadows and don't forget to always check your sketch. So when you feel a bit lost with the values, you can find the answer on your previous sketch. For the white dots, I use Watch this time, not masking fluid as we did before. I'm doing this to show you that you can get similar results using different materials. See you in the next lesson. 11. Final Thoughts: Thank you so much for taking my class today. Remember everything we have split up into this class. From getting inspiration, observing values when you're sketching. That help us with transferring our sketch to the watercolor illustration. We've painted mushrooms using white details, only watercolor, and also we use masking fluid. We also created a final composition. So don't forget to upload different projects to the project students gallery.
