1. Simple Watercolor Approaches for Beginners : Hello everyone. Welcome to the watercolor for the beginner's class. This is song and I'm an artist and designer. As you can see, I want to briefly introduce myself this day. I'm working on abstract watercolors and simple steel life so that I can work on different colors and play around. But my original background is sculpture. I used to work on sculpture a lot. I've made a lot of mutal work and performance art in many different countries. With all my art experiences, I've been teaching art and design in many different places. Now I'm delivering the art class here online. I want to introduce my class very briefly. I will walk you through from the very beginners contents such as how to use brush and how to fix your paper, into how to make your gradation and how to apply the basic techniques to your beautiful watercolor work. And I will deliver not just theoretical, basic techniques, but also we will work on some exercises so that you can think about how to apply the basic skill into watercolor work. I know a lot of people are afraid of color bleeding because they are impatient. But honestly, I'm the most impatient person in the world. But after years of practice, I figure what is the best way to improve your watercolor. I will let you know everything no one has ever let you know. If it appeals you, I want you to see you the next class. Thank you, season. 2. What is the best brush? What is my color?: Hello everyone. Welcome to the Watercolor for beginner's class. This is our first class. I want to introduce the watercolor brushes and how to use the color. If you look at the watercolor brush, you will notice that they have very fluffy belly because they have to observe and contain the water. They also have very delicate and sophisticated tip. Someone might ask, how do I know this is a good brush or not? Tip is the tip. If your tip has lay, doesn't have any specific direction or shape, that's not a good watercolor brush. But if your watercolor brush has a very sophisticated and delicate tip and that's the good one. And brush has the hair part and the middle metal part and wooden part. That's where we grab the brush. And this metal part, the hairs and the wooden part. That means inside of this matter, there is a glue connecting all the brush parts. After using your water, after cleaning your brushes or using your watercolor, you have to let them lay down on the flat surface like a table or paper tower. Otherwise, the glue inside of this metal part will be ruined and your watercolor brushes hair start to fall apart. Now I want to introduce how to use our watercolor paper. Whenever I start to working on my watercolor, I'm always using this masking tape to hold my paper. This is not just hold your paper, but also prevents your paper from crumpling. Additionally, if you need to fill your whole paper with color, it'll help you to make very crisp and clean edges. Now let's talk about the color. I want to make this whole chart, but I'm not going to do that everything right now. But I want to just show you how to make the basic primary color and secondary color. Primary color is yellow, red, and blue. With these three colors, you can make any colors. Let's put our three primary colors. Once you are done with making a three primary color, we are going to create like secondary color. The secondary color can be made by mixing with a two primary color. By mixing the yellow and red, you can make one secondary color by mixing the red and blue, you can make another secondary color. It applies to the yellow and blue as well. We are not going to make tertiary color, but I want to show you something. The complimentary color is the colors that are located in opposite side. It can be the orange and blue or green and red. One interesting thing is by mixing two different colors, you can the beautiful brown color scheme. You can use the brown colors on trees or human hair like that. Let's mix this brown and this green. Then you can make the beautiful olive green. Let's mix this brown with this yellow. Then another beautiful oak color like this. I want to play around the all the colors so that you can find your own color palette and favor colors. Let's talk about the value in water color. There are two ways to make the different values. First one is mixing with the water. This is very traditional way and you can make a transparent and pure water color. Second one is mixing with white. If you're mixing with the white color, you can make more opaque and past to. But I want you to try both of them so that you can find what is your preference and what do you really like. I'm going to just test the primary color again. I'm going to mix another amount of water. You can see they are getting lighter. This is another tip. This is a very small masking tape. It will have all the object you're drawing aligned each other. This time, I want to try to use white color. I'm printing the yellow. White color. Let's see how much they are different. I don't know. You can see this through the camera, but I can see how they are different. This is more opaque and very past deli you might like this color. Let's organize our palette. I don't keep, watch them. I just use my paper towel and just wipe them. I want to start color, keep making another value. If this video is too fast, just pause your video. Just take your time and try to catch up each step so that you don't get lost. Now I'm going to just stop talking and I will just create the different values Again, I will mix with a white color. This is a very pinkish color. I like this pink color when you're working with your color. You might feel like this is like a color therapy. This is one of the reasons why I love watercolor, especially when I'm working with different colors, mixing colors, and keep figuring out the different color palette. So I want you to practice on this enough as well. I'm going to start with blue. And personally, blue is my favorite color, so I'm always so excited to working in blue. So I keep mixing the water with the blue so that I can make different values. Also, if you want to make more steps showing more values, of course you can do that. If you want to spend more time to practice color values, try to do another colors and try to mix with black color as well. Then you can see different values which is getting darker. Personally, I like to use the water when I'm making a different values because I think this is the water colors characteristic the other paint cannot create. Also, if you're using the water, you can keep at the colors after the previous color dries mixing in the water. Let you be able to create multiple layers. This time I'm going to mix the blue with a white color. Let's see what kind of light blue scheme we can make. If you are looking for opaque and pastel tone water color, you might have heard the brand name hole bin. This is more pastel and opaque. This is good for your illustration drawing and modern start drawing Some brand has more vibrant color. I encourage you to research before buying new more color. Once you're used to mixing with different colors, different amounts of water, then you will be way more comfortable to use watercolor and you start to see yourself enjoying the watercolor. I don't know you can see clearly but left side is more transparent and your right hand side is more opaque and pastor tone. After you're done with your drawings, you can just take the tapes out because this is wash tape. There's no way to ruin your paper now, everything's are aligned. So this is our first lesson and I want you to take your own time to figure out the different a color and different values. And after having enough practice. Let's see you in my next class, Bye. 3. The beauty of Watercolor: Gradation: Hello everyone, Welcome back. In this lesson, I will demonstrate the way to make gradation and a simple project you can create with the gradation skill. First, I want to show you the simplest way of creating the gradation, just one of your favorite color. And make a little rectangle like this with lots of water. Make another rectangle underneath, spacing out a bit. Then I will just connect them. Then the water will work for you, please don't touch too much and just let them do their job. Let's try another color as well so that we can practice more and more until we get the confidence I'm using the color blue. But you can try another color that you like also. One tip is that when you're working on the water color, always you have to use a bright color force. And same as that, you have to connect them from the bright side into the darker side. Otherwise, everything would get darker tone than a gradation. I'm trying another color again and this is going to be the final practice for me. But if you think you need more practice to stop the video, just keep trying another color or another shapes. Once you feel confident to do this, try two different color gradations and different direction as well. Because I did the vertical gradation above, I'm creating the horizontal gradation now, but technique is still same. I added the red orange color, now I'm adding a yellow color. I made a little gap as we did above. And I will just connect them from the yellow side into the red orange color. Again, I'm trying to do different color. Right now I'm at in a green color, which is dark green. I will let the light green, yellow, I made a little gap between them and I will just connect them so that they can do their job. I will try another fun thing. I'm creating a circle shape with a different colors. This is quite a fun exercise to do. Mix with any color you want to see. I'm choosing the colors that you can see clearly through the camera. But absolutely you can do the similar color or paste color. This is all up to you. As long as you are having a fun at that, that's all it matters. I'm telling you that the watercolor is all about the use of amount of water so that you can make the proper water bleeding on your painting. The more you practice this exercise, the more you can enjoy the watercolor. Next I want to show you another basic terminology in watercolor and what it is. The first one I want to show you is wet. Into wet, I'm putting a very watery yellow. The point is you have to work on it when it's still wet. I will add a very wet color to this wet yellow background. This is why this is called a wet in wet technique. You can see they are blending each other very quickly and you cannot control them. This is one of the beauties of the watercolor. As they dry more, the color blend each other and spread into each other's more. The next one is dry into wet. As it sounds, I'm creating the wet background. Now with a very dry color, I will make some lines. Dry color means I'm using very little water on the paint. Now, you can control your stroke a bit, but still there is a paint bleeding. I made two dry background colors so I can show you wetting to dry and dry to dry. I want to show you the wetting to dry first. Now I'm using a very wet color on the dried background and now you have pretty much control in your brush trying to dry as well. You can make everything as you intended. It is good for when you're drawing the trees in your beautiful background or Some details, like you're drawing the human shape or a flock of birds or something like that in detail drawings. Now just try random drawing, just whatever you want and just mix it with a lot of water or just use a dry color or different colors or different shapes. Or you can make a carved line or a straight line just up to you, try to practice more and see how it goes. Let's apply these skills to a beautiful birds painting. When I'm making specific object, having a certain shape, I always make a guide line. First, I'm using the HB pencil, which is the lightest, so that I can cover this pencil line where I'm using a water color. I will just make a simple shape for this exercise. I'm starting with a brown palette, but you can choose any color you want. I keep adding gradations with a different brown so that it has a more depth. For the puffy valley, I will use yellow first so that it looks more bright and puffy. I will add some orange. The tip is you have to keep adding the colors when the previous color is still wet. There won't be any struct, so now I'm making a bird chick. I'm using a red orange color so that it looks like a blush. By using a watery color, I will let them blend very actively. I will add some green and I will let them connect as we did on our previous exercise, just scrub where their boundaries are. Now I will let them dry, and in the meantime I will create another bird having a different shape and different color. If you're pointing their paks up, they will look like they are looking up the sky. If you want to make different shape or different position, you can simply search the bird shape on the Internet and you can change it. I'm starting with a light paint and adding a bit of pitch for the gradation. I'm adding a watery pink around so that it doesn't dry too fast. Now I'm using a brown color for her wings and tails. If you're moving your brush too slow, if you don't have enough water on your brush, it will dry really quickly. And it will not blend each other really well. Keep checking the humidity on your paper and your brush. And keep adding different color, having a different value so that you can give more on your drawings. I'm adding a blue palette on her lower belly, because blue goes really well with a light pink and pitch by using a bit of water. I'm connecting them for gradation. I'm creating another layer for the tail so it doesn't look too light and mix with the blue on her belly so that it looks way more natural as if it has a shadow underneath. Once you're drawing dries enough, you can add their beaks and legs. If you're not comfortable with using thin brush, you can use blagging pegamantlliner for legs and eyes. Now I'm adding another bird's legs. But if you made your bird with a different position, you can think about different angles or different positions over your bird's legs. Also, I'm creating a little bird's eye. I simply fight it. I'm adding a little leaves and flowers so that I can add some story here which makes it fun and cute based on your preference. You can add different things as well, such as ribons or a little candies or any other little things. You can absolutely at text. And I would say gradation skill is really simple, but looks really nice and decent. You can use this skill to create the card for your friend's birthday and use this gradation skill for your home decor. This is all we learned today and I hope you enjoy it then let's wrap it up and see you in the next class. Bye. 4. Create everything with brush strokes: Welcome back everyone. In today's class, we will need different sizes of brushes so that we can try all of our brushes we have and paper towels to soak the water from the brushes if needed. First, we'll test a big round brush with a different angles. Try to use the tip and belly and try different amount of waters and colors. With a thinner brush, I will test the same ways of brushes truck. Also, I'm varying the pressures to give so that I can make the different lines. This is the finest brush. It seems that there is a limitation to make a big stroke. But still, it's really good for when you're making a detailed line. If you have any other brushes, I encourage you to try all of them. Even you can try the flat brush or a different shape of brushes. Again, there are lots of different ways of making the different types of lines. Just be creative. Getting used to your brushes and how to treat them gives you more opportunity to create the delicate and high quality works. You can try even different colors or different shapes you want to draw. Like you can make a square or you can make a rectangle or circle or triangle. Just you can do anything you want. I'm playing around right now with making of different geometric shapes or different pressure with a rough lines, with a small amount of water. This time, I will show you how to make the leaves. You can draw the leave with one stroke by starting with a tip, giving more pressure to your brush. And again, finish with your tip. If this is not easy to try, draw the leaves outline and make the stroke. Thinking to fill this shape with your brush. Again, belly tip, tip. Belly tip. Just by varying the different pressure on your brush, you can make different weights. Again, tip tip. Till now I'm showing you how to make the leaves branch. If you mess it up a bit, of course you can touch up after and just randomly make your leaves. Then you can see your leaves branch is coming. Now I'm making the stem with a line. I'm making another leaf branch for practice. I'm drawing the leaves here and there. Once you try the right side and try left side again, and right and left, I will make the line for the stem and connect all of the leaves into the stem. For the stem, you might want to use the thinner brush. If you're more comfortable to work in a thinner brush, please to do so. Also, you can add more leaves after making a stem. I will finish this one as well. If you make the end of the lives where they are attached to the stem a darker color, it will look more realistic. Now let's create II card by using this skill. Again, I'm using the big round brush with lots of amount of water. Since this is going to be the background, try to make different types of lips so that it looks more fun and dynamic. Also, feel free to try different colors and different shapes. There are not any specific rules for this. Eventually it's going to get more faded. Once it dries, you can feel more free to draw any different shapes. Honestly, organic shape doesn't have a specific rule or form to follow. You can just use different line stroke and different length. You can make any leaves beautifully. Now let them just dry before trying the next layer after it dries fully, I'm creating another layers. These leaves are going to have a smaller. Darker value than previous background leaves. Blues always might go to color because this is my favorite. But you can make them all different colors or different color scheme. Don't get stuck with what I'm using. Now I'm drawing the leaves branch, what it practiced on the left side, on this layer, I'm trying to find more detail because this layer is going to be more shown. Also, if you're using various colors on this drawing, it'll be fine with a similar shapes of leaves. If you're playing around with a similar color scheme like me, you might need more dynamic shapes or composition so it doesn't look boring. Now I'm changing the composition and the direction the leaves are. I'm using the long line straw. It looks different leaves. I keep using the different blue but having a similar value. Every lives has a different color, but still the overall look has a cohesive mood. Also, think about different composition and different geometric shapes. You can feel the empty spaces. I made some leaves upside down. Use one or two leaves separately, floating around everywhere. And a little dots. It looks more complete and full. If you want to add some text or sentence, you can leave the space and add them later, just as we did in the last lesson. Now you can take off the masking tapes, and you can see they have even spacings in the corners because of these masking tapes. Now I'm creating another brush stroke, scrubbing a little bit of paper back and forth. It's like two leaves overlapped. Then you can make a simple flower petals. Now I'm overlapping the round brackets so that I can make a rose kind when it is still wet. You can add different colors or value so they can have more depth and beautiful colors. I'm making smaller brackets and getting bigger. Or you can make the rose kind by overlapping the circle shapes, by using thin and short brush. I will mix tiny, cute flowers and tall flowers on the left top side give a better composition bouquet. When you're drawing a flower bouquet, think about the composition and overall look. If there is a big object, there needs to be a smaller object as well. If there is a short format, there also needs to be a tall one. Because I'm drawing the bouquet right now, I keep checking the big silhouette, which is outlines. Whenever you have time, invest your time on searching for images you want to draw and observe the format. It will train your eyes. Eventually, you can just draw by yourself without looking at any reference picture. I keep adding different kinds, different shapes and sizes of flowers having different colors, just as the real bouquet does with the flower drawings. You can explore all different ear brushes or the same brush, but using different ways of using. Now I'm drawing the stems that will connect all the flowers we drew and it will give more ideas where to add more flowers or leaves to complete this drawing. Once it dries, you can add some detail lines with your brush tip or thin brush. Also, in filling in where it is empty with different types of brush stroke, there are lots of things you can draw as it is. I hope you enjoy this session and I will be back with a project video. See you soon, bye. 5. Create Your Masterpiece; Landscape: Hello everyone. In this video is our project video with a technique that we've learn in my previous lessons. First, fix your paper for sure. If you have any spray bottle, spray the water throughout the whole paper. This time I will use this flat bigger brush. But if you don't have this kind, you can use any round bigger brush. I will start with the bright yellow color so that I can make a beautiful sunset. The next one is bright orange. And don't forget to start with a bright color to a dark color. Keep adding slightly different colors when they are still wet, so that they can be blended well. This is the reason I sprayed the water in the first place. If you think you need a bold color, feel free to do so. Since this is sunset, it can be very fiery. Also, don't forget that it will be a bit faded when it dries fully. I keep adding the new color and different layers so that it looks like a more sunset scenery. To create realistic and beautiful colors, I always search the reference picture on Pinterest. I recommend you to use the Pinterest for reference as well. If you find the nicer sunset having a different colors, you can use those colors instead of following my colors. Once your sunset is fully dried, we are going to jump into the lake expression again. We are going to spray the water first so that your color can be blended each other really well. I'm going to add some pinkish color for the sky. Reflection on the water. Just enjoy the different brushes, straws As we practiced before, adding some red or yellow or a different orange color, you can mix with more water or not. Please enjoy this lake expression because I'm working on very wet paper. I can see they are blended very naturally. Now also I'm adding a bit of gray, which I mix black with the water. And this will be the mountain reflection on the water that we are going to work on the background. Now once you find your sky fully dries at the farthest layer of mountain and it will be the farthest mountain in your drawing. When I'm drawing the mountain, first I define the shape, which means the outline, and then I feel the color inside of that outlines. If you're not sure how to draw the shape, you can search the reference photos so that you can figure out how to draw, or you can practice on the paper with your pen. Once you figure out how to draw, you can draw on this drawing. Also, if you feel too much pressure, you can make just two different layers. Again, we are going to work on the lake and this is the mountain reflection on the lake. Use the light stroke and a little bit thicker stroke. Just keep changing the value and line weight. I keep changing the store color with a different line weight because water wave never has the same shape and angle. Let's add another layer for the mountain, but this time a bit darker gray. That means you need to add less water to the black color than the gray you use on the first layer. As you can see here, I'm defining the outline first and filling in the inside of it. This will be the final layer on the mountain. I will make this left mountain coming into the front of bit. I'm using the darker color than the previous layer because we made these three different layers for the mountain with a different values. Now you can see their differences. The farthest one has a very faded value and the middle one has a mid value. The closest one which I'm drawing is the darkest so that it looks closer. So this is how you can make a sense of in your drawing. Again, if you're confused about how to make the shape of mountain, you can follow the way I made. Or you can also search the image and make different shape. Now I want to make some detail with our small brush. This is a little boat and this is a water wave from the boat. If you practice the line weight enough, it'll be easy to create them. Now with a small brush, again, I will make a fog of birds. It's like writing the number three. Also, think about the composition and their size. A bold and bigger shapes and some are very small, having a thin lines with a small brush and white color. I will add a little line over here so that it looks like the boat is moving. So finally, take the masking tape out, then you will see your edge are very clean and neat. There you go. So by using a gradation and wetting to wet skills, we made a sky and watercolor background and we made the water, wave and mountain layers using different brush strokes and wet into dry techniques. Color mixing and color composition are the basic assets in any painting. I en you to keep practicing to create your own color palette. If you're satisfied with your drawing, please share your drawing on the plast project board so that I can see how you're doing and what you've learned. Thank you and see you soon again. Bye. 6. Summary of Watercolor: Hello everyone. If you're watching this, you did it. I really am proud of you. I really want to say thank you for all your cooperation and I really appreciate all your effort you've been putting on your work. So this is the closing video for saying thank you to you. And I want to walk you through what you've learned so far and what you watch it. So we have learned from choosing the right brush, the way to use watercolor, paper, color exploration, and how to start creating gradation, which is the basic technique in watercolor. With those basic skill, we drew beautiful birds and different abstract practice using different colors. There were also some more techniques which are made by controlling the amount of water. Also by using different line techniques and how to use your different brushes. We could make abstract paintings, or beautiful botanical drawings with all those techniques. We finally made our final project, watercolor drawing. I hope you enjoy all my lessons with me, and I encourage you to post your drawing on the project gallery and write a review towards my lesson so that I can see how you've worked and what to improve for the next project. Again, thank you for attending all my classes. For the next time, I will deliver the next step of Watercolor. If you want to improve more, I want you to see you next class. All right. Thank you and have a great day. Bye.
