1. Welcome to the Class: Have you ever tried painting on a brown paper? If not, let us paint a beautiful vintage house on a brown paper using the medium of watercolors. It's a short class which will improvise your sketching skills, and we are going to use watercolors to enhance your entire sketch. Hey, everybody. Myself, Ruwick Patel. I'm a self taught independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. So if you are joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. We are going to start by understanding the entire class project that we are going to create. I'll be giving you the details about all the art supplies that you will need to create the entire painting. No need to worry at all in case you are missing out on any particular art supply. You can go for any other good alternative, as well. You're going to talk about the watercolors that you will need, the brown paper that we are going to use. The first step is to create a basic sketch using a black ink. We are going to draw a beautiful vintage house having minor details in it. There is going to be a little staircase, a fence element, and some beautiful landscape around. Once we are done with the entire basic sketch, we are going to apply watercolors to the building structure and the landscape area. The best part is that you will need a single brush to apply the watercolors. Combining these little elements together, we are going to form this beautiful painting on a brown paper. We are going to learn easy brush techniques which will help you to enhance your painting skills. At the end, we are going to add the color palette, and we will be done with our class project. The class will help you to explore watercolors and sketching on a different background. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. The class is absolutely suited for beginners and also intermediate and advanced level artists can try it. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Details About the Class Project: Hey, everybody. Now, let us talk about the class project that we are going to create for the entire class. So here I have placed my entire painting, and let me give you the details about what we are going to sketch and paint. You can observe that it is an entire brown paper on which we have painted the entire scenery. So there is this simple color palette of all the colors that we have used on the topmost portion. I have splattered some white color around as you can observe. Now, there is going to be this main element, which is this beautiful vibrant vintage house that we have painted. There are little windows which enhance the entire house. The house is completely surrounded with plants. There is this little fence element and a little staircase, which is connected with the house element. So all over, combining all these little elements together, we have formed this beautiful scenery that you can observe. The best part is that we have created a beautiful contrast in the house by using this beautiful vibrant colors. It is blue and red together. So we're going to start with a basic sketch, and then we are going to apply watercolors. I hope that you got an exact idea of the class project that we are going to create. Now let us move towards the next part and understand all the art supplies that you will need. 3. Art Supplies: Everybody. Now let us talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. In case you are missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative, as well. Now let us start with the first art supply, which is this simple glass container in which you can observe some blue water. Definitely, we are going to take some clear water. Since we are going to work with watercolors, you will need some water. Then the next art supply is the black ink that we are going to use to create our basic sketch. So I'm going to use a marker from art line, and it is 0.8 size, you can observe the tip of the marker. Then I'm going to use a simple calligraphy pen, which is, again, a marker, which is having a different tip a little bit thicker. You can observe that. So we're going to use wherever we want a thick black line. You can use any good alternative as well. Then next up, I have a simple white pen from sakura. So it is basically a white pen that we are going to use to add some minute details. Then the best part is that you will need a single round brush of size four to apply watercolors to the entire sketch. Now, let us talk about the brown paper that we are going to use to create our entire class project. You can observe that I'm going to use a brown paper from scholar. It is 170 GSM, and it is A five size. Now, in case you're not having a brown paper, what you can do is you can use a white paper as well. But before that, let me show you the class project. So it's going to have this beautiful brown background on which we are going to sketch and apply watercolors. In case you are not having a brown paper, you can still take up the class project on a white watercolor paper. Let me give you the details as well. So you can use a Canson watercolor paper. It is also again, size A five and 300 GSM. You can use any good alternative. It is completely fine. So I hope that you got an exact idea about the brown paper. Now the next start supply is a simple tissue paper that you should definitely keep nearby whenever you're working with watercolors. It will help you to dab your brush and remove axis amount of water and color. Then I have this simple transparent color palette in which you can already observe the colors that I have taken out. You can use any good color palette, having enough space for mixing colors together. Now, let us talk about the watercolors that you will need for the entire class. So the first one is red, then we have green. Then we have blue, white, Oca yellow, and yellow. These are six basic colors that you will need for the entire painting. No need to worry about the exact shade. You can use any good alternative as well. The watercolors that I'm using are from Bonfll. You can use any good brand which works for you. So these are all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all in case you're missing out on any particular art supply. You'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative as well. Now let us move towards the next part. 4. Basic Sketch: Hey, everybody. Now, let us start with the first step, which is creating a basic sketch. You can observe that I'm ready with my sketchbook with a beautiful brown background. We are going to use our black ink from Artline, and you can observe that it is having a tip of 0.8. It's a good black ink to use for sketching. You can use any good alternative as well. It is absolutely fine. So let us start with the first element, which is the major element in the entire sketch, which is a beautiful vintage house. You can simply observe these steps and follow. So I'm starting with a little rectangular element on the topmost portion. Now, simply, we are just going to create it into this rectangular form, which is basically the chimney of the entire house. So you just have to combine these little rectangular shapes together. You can observe that I am having these two rectangular shapes, and I'm going to add these little horizontal lines to add minute details in the entire chimney. Now, once I'm done with the chimney part, I'm going to draw the roof of the entire house. So I'm going to connect this slant line with the chimney. Now, again, I'll be adding another slant line. And similarly, we're going to add two more slant lines. To get a beautiful structure for the entire roof, we are going to extend the last slant line a little bit more. No need to hurry at all. Just try to draw the basic sketch with a lot of patience and in a very slow and steady manner. Whenever you're sketching, make sure that you keep your hand very much loose and free. Now to complete the entire roof, I'm just adding this horizontal line on the bottom part. Now, we are going to draw the remaining structure, which is the walls. So just add these vertical lines. And in case you want to double the lines, it is absolutely fine. It will give a little bit of volume to the entire house. Now what I'm going to do is that I'm going to add these little minute details in the entire roof structure. You just have to create these dotted lines, and we're going to add it in the roof only. Now, similarly, I'll be adding it in the center part as well. Whenever you want to create a beautiful dotted line, just keep your hand very much loose and free and simply touch the surface, having some space in between the black strokes that I'm doing right now. So you can observe that our roof is looking really very well and in detail. Now to enhance the entire roof structure a little bit more, I'll just reapply the black lines so that it gets a little bit more thick and it gets a beautiful contrast. Now let us draw the windows. So I'm just adding these two little rectangular shapes in one side of the wall. Now let us have a huge window in the center part. Just create a little curved shape on the topmost portion, followed by two vertical lines and one single horizontal line. Now to add some minute details in it, just add one vertical line in between and add these little rectangular shapes in between. This will make your window look a little bit more in detail and in aesthetics. Now, similarly, I'll be adding two more windows on another side of the wall. So we are done with the basic structure of the entire house. Now I'll just use my marker to create these little random lines to form the outline of the entire plants around the house. So it's a very simple and easy process. You can observe the movement of my hand. I'm just creating these little strokes combining together to form a very random outline of the plants around. Now, it is not at all compulsory for you to draw it in the exact same way. You can apply the outline according to your convenience, and in case you want to follow mine, it is absolutely fine. So initially, we are just adding the outline of the plants. Once we are done with the outline, we'll add minute details in it. So we have created these little bushes around. You can observe them carefully. So I'm going to add it on the left hand side, as well. You can play with the structure, shape, and size of the entire bush. It is absolutely fine. The technique is very easy and simple. You just have to create these little strokes combining together to form a beautiful organic outline. Since plants and trees generally have a very organic and natural shape, so there is no specific way of drawing them. Now, apart from the outline, I'll just add a simple electrical pole to add some aesthetics to the entire scenery, create a simple vertical line followed by two horizontal lines on the topmost portion, and simply add these little two wires connecting with the lans. Now let us draw the staircase which is connected with the house. It's a very simple and easy step. You are just supposed to create these little rectangular shapes, which can increase in size as you move towards the bottom area. You just have to add these little rectangles. No need to hurry at all, take your time and try to sketch in a very slow and steady manner. So once we are done drawing the staircase, I'm going to connect it with a fence element as well. So we are just going to create these vertical lines connecting together, forming a beautiful fence element, which is connected with the staircase. Again, let me tell you the same thing. No need to worry about drawing it in the exact same way. You are free to compose and draw it according to your convenience as well. I'm just adding this little solid black patch to create some nice depth and enhance the shape of the entire staircase. So as you can observe that we have drawn the entire staircase and the fence element. Now, let me tell you how you have to enhance the entire plants around. It's a very simple and easy step. You just have to add this little solid black patch. On the outline of the entire plants that we have created. Now to make them look a little bit more aesthetic and attractive and to create some beautiful contrast, you have to just add the marker or the blacking in this dotted form. You can observe that I'm just simply dabbing my marker and creating the outline in this dotted format. Now, once you move towards the inner area or the outer area, you just increase the space between the dots. Let me repeat the step again so that you get a little bit more clarity. The outline that we have already created for the plants is completely visible. Now, to make it look a little bit more in contrast and to make it look a little bit more attractive, you just have to simply add these little solid black patches around, and you have to add these little dots, which is going to get vanished in the outer and inner area, both. And this is how we are going to enhance the entire plantation around the entire sketch. It will be very interesting for you to add these little dots, and you'll definitely enjoy the entire process as well. But you will need a lot of patience to do this particular step. You will have to add the dots in a very slow and steady manner, creating a beautiful contrast in the entire sketch. M So as you can observe that we have added these little contrasting elements using a dotted form of our black ink on the right hand side as well. Now, if you observe carefully, I have added solid black patches near the walls of the entire vintage house, which basically enhances the entire house and creates a nice contrast as well. Now you can observe that I'm just adding the dots in a very random way. There is no specific way of applying it. You just have to create it in a very solid black patch, and once you move towards the outer or inner portion, just increase the space between the dots. Also, no need to worry about drawing it in the exact same way. You're free to compose and draw it according to your convenience. It is completely fine. So no need to worry about drawing it in the exact same way. It is important for you to learn the technique first. Now, I will just simply enhance the wall line by just doubling it up. So you can reapply the black ink on that particular part. So we are done with the entire basic sketch using a black ink. I hope that you got an exact idea of how to draw all the elements together forming a beautiful scenery. We have used a simple black ink to create this basic sketch. Now to make it look a little bit more attractive and aesthetic, they're going to apply watercolors to the entire sketch. I hope that you enjoyed the entire process of creating a basic sketch. Now let us move towards the next part. 5. Applying Watercolors: Hey, everybody. Now, once we are done with the basic sketch, let us apply watercolors. Before that, let me give you about the details of the watercolors that we are going to use. So the watercolors that I'm using are from bonfll. You can use any good alternative that works for you. So there are six basic colors that we are going to use. The first one is red. Then we have white, aqua yellow, blue, green and yellow. So these are the six basic colors that you will require. And I'm going to use this simple transparent color palette. So as you can observe, I'm ready with my sketchbook. We are going to use a simple round brush of size four. And the best part is that you will need this single brush only. We are ready with all the six colors, a simple tissue paper, and some clear water nearby. So let us start with the house element first. Cindy color palette, you can observe that we have this beautiful blue color. And in order to decrease its saturation, we are going to add a little bit of white in it. So I just take a little amount of white, and you have to mix the colors well to decrease the saturation of the blue color. In case you find that your color is very much stiff, add a little bit of water in it. No need to hurry at all, take your time and mix the colors well. In case you want to add some more white color and make it even more light blue, then you can do that. You can observe in my color palette. I have mixed the colors well. Now, we are going to apply it on the walls of the entire house, but before that, let us apply it on the chimney as well. So using the tip of my round brush, I'll just simply apply it in this little portion where we have these rectangles. No need to hurry at all. Use the tip of your round brush, apply very less pressure on it to get the color in this little area. Similarly, I'll be adding it on the bottom portion as well. You can observe the way I'm moving my brush in this horizontal direction to apply it in this smaller portion. So now you can observe that we have applied the color in the entire chimney. I'll be using the same brush to apply it on the roof element. The entire roof is going to be solid red, but in this certain area, we are just applying this light blue color. You can use the tip of your round brush to add the color in a very small portion. Now I'll be taking some more color from the color palette, and we're going to apply the light blue color on the walls of the entire vintage house. No need to hurry at all. Try to paint with a very slow and steady manner. You can absorb the way I am using my round brush. You can absorb the way I have applied the color in between the windows as well. I'm leaving a little bit of portion in the bottom area because there we are going to apply some dark blue color to create a nice shadow effect. You have to be a little bit careful near the windows, make sure that you do not move your brush inside the window. Again, I'll leave some portion in the bottom area. Now, similarly, we are going to add the blue color in the remaining portions of the wall as well. I'm adding the color on the wall present in the right hand side. Again, I'll be leaving some portion in the bottom area. Similarly, we are going to add the color in the wall which is present in an angle. You can observe the way I'm using the tip of my round brush to paint in this smaller area. You have to be a little bit careful near the corners. Now, let us take a little bit of dark blue. You can add a little bit of white in case you want to, but try to have a darker blue and apply it on the bottom portion. No need to hurry at all. Use the tip of your brush and apply the color. Similarly, we are going to apply this dark blue color in the wall present in the right hand side as well. Now just simply clean your brush in water, dab it onto the tissue paper, make it very much dry, and blend the colors together. You'll observe a nice gradient shade where we have dark blue in the bottom portion and light blue on the topmost portion. It is not a perfect blend since it's an abstract form of painting, so it is absolutely fine. So right now you can observe a beautiful blend of both the colors. Now, I'll just make a little bit of darker blue color near the slant wall. So we are done painting the walls of the entire vintage house. Now let us paint the fence element. So I'll be taking a little bit of the same color that we applied in the walls of the vintage house. You can add a little bit of water in it to loosen the color up and simply apply it in this vertical manner. Use the tip of your round brush and no need to hurry at all. Apply very less pressure on it to get a nice thin stroke. You can also add these little patches of color in the bottom area. And we are done painting the fence element as well. Now, we are going to add a little bit of color in the roof element where we have this bigger roof on the right handside. You can just add a little thin stroke. Now, let us paint the staircase. So I'll just add a little bit of water in this solid red color that we already have in the color palette. And we are going to use the same color in the roof as well. So you can paint any element initially. Just loosen the color up by adding a little bit of water in the color palette. Mix them well. You can dab your brush onto the tissue paper in case you find that there is x amount of water. Now, try to have a lot of patience and try to paint in a very slow and steady manner. Let us start with the roof only. So I'll just use the tip of my round brush and apply the color in the roof element present on the left hand side. You can observe the way I'm using the tip of my brush, and I have covered the entire area. The black dotted line will be still visible. No need to worry about that. Once your color will dry, the black line will be visible again. Now, similarly, I'll be adding the color in the roof element present in the center area as well. You can observe the way I'm using the tip of my brush on the bottom portion. Now take some more color from the color palette, and we're going to paint the last roof element as well. Whenever there is a very small portion to paint, you should make sure that you apply very less pressure on your brush. Try to keep your hand very much loose and free. This will help you to paint in that particular area in a very comfortable manner. Now, similarly, using the same red color, we are going to apply it on the windows. You can add a little bit of light blue color in it if you want to decrease the saturation of this vibrant red color. And in case you want to use it directly, it is absolutely fine. Now, in between the solid black lines, you just have to apply the color. So that's why you have to apply very less pressure and use the tip of your brush to get a nice thin stroke. We can use the same red color to enhance the chimney as well. Now using the same red color, I'll be painting the staircase element as well. The outline is already ready. You just have to fill in this beautiful red color inside. If your color moves out of the outline a little bit, it is absolutely fine. Or in case you are left with certain portion to paint, it is absolutely fine because it is an abstract form of painting. I'll just use my calligraphy pen with a tip, a thick, solid black tip, basically, and apply it just below the roof to get a nice thick, solid black line. You can use a solid black color as well to paint it directly with your brush. It is absolutely fine, but it is more convenient and easy to use a marker. I'll use my white pen, and I'll just add these little dotted lines in this beautiful red roof, the black lines are still visible, as I told you. When the color dries, the lines will be visible again. Now on that, you have to apply these little dotted white lines. It will enhance the entire roof and make it look more in detail. You can use your brush and white paint as well, but this is more convenient and easy to use a solid white pen. But in case you're missing out on a white pen, you can use your brush and white color. Now let us paint the plants around. It's a very simple and easy technique known as a wet on wet technique. Clean your brush in water, take some good amount of clear water in your brush, apply it on the entire surface where we have this beautiful plantation. Now take some amount of green color from your color palette, mix it well in water. Now apply it on the topmost portion, and you'll observe that the color will start spreading automatically. You just have to dab your brush in the bottom area in this dotted format. Try to apply a solid patch on the topmost portion only. And this is basically known as a wet on wet technique. Now, simply clean your brush in water, apply some water around, and you'll observe that the color will spread automatically. We are basically doing this particular step to create some nice depth in the entire plantation. Now, similarly, we are going to repeat the entire step and you can observe it carefully and follow. I'm going to apply a nice coat of water on the entire plant area. You can observe the way I'm applying it in this dotted format also around to create some nice details in the entire plant. I'll take a little bit of green. You can also take a little bit of yellow and decrease the saturation of green color. Apply it on the topmost portion in this solid patch and leave the remaining portion. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread, and you can use the tip of your round brush to add these little dots in the bottom area as well. It's a very easy and simple step. It requires a little bit of practice and patience. Now, in case you do not want to paint the plants directly in your final painting, what you can do is you can practice it on a rough scrape of paper initially, and then you can come towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence while painting, and the chances of making mistakes will be very less. Now, similarly, we are going to paint the plants on the righthand side as well. These steps are absolutely same. Apply a thin coat of water on the entire surface and then apply the color. You can observe these steps carefully and follow them. So as you can observe, we have almost painted the plants on the right hand side as well and left hand side as well. Now, I'll just add a little bit of plantation on the bottom area to create some nice depth and details in the entire surrounding. You can observe the way we have combined a beautiful black ink sketch with watercolors and it creates a beautiful harmony altogether. It is not at all compulsory for you to use the same color palette in case you want to explore and experiment with the entire color palette. It is absolutely fine. In case you want to create your own scenery and create your own composition, that is also absolutely fine. Now let us add some more minor details. I'll take some solid white color in the color palette, add a little bit of water in it, and simply create these little patches which are acting like stones in the bottom area, or we can say it in the ground area. So it basically creates a beautiful contrast with the scenery that we have painted and the brown color paper as well. No need to hurry at all. Try to use the surface of your brush, create difference in the size of the stones. So try to have bigger solid white patches and smaller patches. You can create a cluster of two to 3 stones together. Now comes another beautiful brush technique, and you'll definitely enjoy this particular detail as well. So take a good amount of solid white color in your brush. Try to have very less amount of water in it. In case you find that there is excess amount of water in your brush, just simply dab it onto the tissue paper. Now, use it in this vertical manner. You can absorb the way I'm holding my brush in an exact vertical manner. And I'm just dabbing my brush to create these little white dots on the topmost portion of the plantation. No need to hurry at all and try to do this particular step in a very slow and steady manner. You'll observe these beautiful details in the entire plantation. It creates a nice contrast with the green and black color in the background, and it makes the leaves look even more attractive and aesthetic. We are not going to apply these little white dots on the entire plantation. In certain portions, only I'm applying it. That also on the topmost area. It's a very simple and easy technique, and in case you want to practice it on a rough scrape of paper initially and then come towards your final painting, it is absolutely fine. This will help you to develop confidence while painting, and the chances of making mistakes will be very nice. So now, once we are done adding minute details to the plants, add a little bit more water in your solid white color. Now simply tap your finger onto the brush and splatter some color in this random manner. You will observe the white color on the brown paper in this random manner, and it will have a nice variation in this dotted manner. And you'll definitely enjoy this particular step. So try to add a little bit more water in your color and just simply tap your finger onto the brush. You can have a nice variation in the white dots by increasing the size. This particular step basically helps us to make our sketch look even more attractive and in an abstract manner. It creates some nice aesthetics to the entire painting as well. So we are done with the entire painting. Now, we are going to add the color palette on the corner, top left corner, basically, of the entire painting. So what I'm going to do is that I'll take the first color, which is this solid red color, apply it in the circular manner. No need to hurry at all. Then simply clean your brush again and take some green color and apply another circle we are doing this particular step to make the entire painting look a little bit more attractive, and it's a way of just representing the entire color palette that we have used. In case you want to skip this particular step and you do not want to add the color palette, it is absolutely fine. So we are almost done adding all the colors from the color palette. I'm just adding the last one, which is solid white. Now, let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. We are done with the entire class project and you can observe the way we have combined all these little elements to form a beautiful landscape painting in which the major element is this vibrant vintage house. We have also added a nice color palette on the topmost portion. You can add your signature and date as well. It is completely fine. All over, we have combined sketching and watercolors together. I hope you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something new. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. Now let us move towards the class conclusion. 6. Class Conclusion: Hey, everybody. So you're most welcome to the class conclusion. I hope that you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something new and creative. While I was creating this particular class, I made a number of mistakes, and that is something that I always tell my students never to be afraid of making mistakes. It is really great if you maintain an art journal to practice on a regular basis. This basically improvises your sketching, inking, and painting skills. I would be really excited to see all of your class projects into the project gallery, so do not forget to add them into the project gallery. It would be really great if you leave a review for the entire class as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining the class and happy painting.
