1. Intro: Hi everyone, This is Megan and I'm a watercolor artist based in Bangalore, India. And in today's class, we are going to try three cute and fun Christmas illustrations, which I have a rustic dodge, a little bit of farmhouse style, and a little bit of vintage vibe to it. And also, we are going to choose three beautiful Christmas colors, so which is red, green, and blue. And I'll quickly show you. So for red we are going to do this cute little norm. And then for the blue, we are going to do this cute little rustic snowman with fluffy, had a cute little scarf. And for the green one here going to do something really fun. An iconic which is this ugly sweater. And I'll be taking you step-by-step and telling you how to mix your colors, how to turn down the colors so that they look a little bit of farmhouse and vintage style. And we will not be drawing anything. So this is just brush only and it is super easy, simple and fun. I'll be explaining you how to go about it. So I am really excited about this class and I'm sure you are do so without any further delay. Let's go ahead and start with this class. In the next part, I'll let you know about all the materials that you will be needing. 2. Materials : Alright, so good. Let's go ahead and have a look at all the materials that you will be needing for this Christmas illustration car. Plus, I have this four by six gods here with me, 100% cotton watercolor paper, 300 GSM. Then number eight, round brush for all the illustrations, a watercolor set. You can use any watercolor, but make sure that you have red, green, and blue in it. Some tissue for wiping off extra paint. Two jars of water, one for washing the brush, and one for clean supply of water. So I'll be taking you step-by-step. And this is a no drug class. We will be just using the brush and painting all three of these illustration. As we go along, I'll give you all the instructions that are needed and so excited for this. So let's go ahead and move on to the next part of the class where we are going to paint our first illustration. 3. Blue Snowman : Alright, so let's start with our first Christmas color, which is blue and v are going to do a snowman with it. And we are trying to be, I'm going to keep it simple, analytical, rustic, and also a little bit toned down because we are trying to do something vintage, something very, very elastic. So what I'm doing is I'm mixing a little bit of black, a little bit of purple into my blue so that my blue pale. And what do you see? A little toned-down starting with the hat. So what I'm doing is I'm doing the rim of the hat and I'm just using the tip of the brush and doing tap, tap, tap, tap like this. Just to get a very rough and raw edge. And then just wash your brush, dry your brush, and pull that color in and just fill it up. Add more color on the outline if you want. Pick up, picking up color like this adds a little bit of highlight. And then again you can go ahead and add some darker shade and just finish that. Finish the rim. And then I'm the top in the same way. And just in the outline with the blue. And then I wash my brush and just pull in that color and then fill it in very, very lightly. And then again, we use the same technique. And I'm going to do a little bit of an oversized bom, bom so that it looks cuter and moving dead style and more cozy. You're just using the tip of the brush. Again, tap, tap, tap, tap and adding dark color one more layer of it. And then just filling the whole thing like this. So when you do this, you'll get a nice texture. It won't look flat as you can see here. And it gives, that, gives it a nice 3D look. And you can also see how our blue is. It's very, very muted and tone down. Okay, so now let's do the face now. If you are comfortable, I'll suggest, since it's a nor no draw thing you can via using only the brush, find it uncomfortable or you are not very well versed with it, then you can always go ahead and draw. Also, you can always go ahead and correct If you are not very happy, just take some clean water on the brush. Just scrub it very gently. Be careful with the bristles. Take a tissue and just soak it up and then you can go again. Right. So just a little outline that same bluish color. Yes. So this time it looks better. And then we just drag the color in, soften the outline a little because it's supposed to be white and snow. So we're just highlighting the outlines thing. We will do a nice little body theme, blue color, a little bit of highlights, and then just dragging that color in, softening it up and filling it, filling the insight. All we want is just a little bit of shadow and highlight and very light color. You can use your tissue also to pick up the extra column. I be adding a little more color where the body and the neck are joining just to create a little bit of shadow here. And then just blend it nicely. Just like that. You have to blend it so that it doesn't look like a hard line. Once the face is completely dry to latte black eyes. Just like this, you can leave a little white dot for the highlight. And the same brownish red that we used before. I'm using that for the nose. Just a tiny little triangular shape. Nose. I'm just using the tip of the brush, the outline. And then just filling it in. Let's now add a cute little scarf here. Again, I'm using a darker version of the same blue that we used before. Starting with the neck. A little outside of the body because just to show that it is on it. And then again, creating a little bit of design by picking up the color. So this kind of bleed or checks are dots on anything. If you do, it adds and gives a more vintage rustic look. So just by lifting a little color, you can see how it starts to look like a 3D, like a 3D object. And then again, I'm adding a little bit of dark to give it even more 3D look. Again, a little bit of play here as well. And then a little bit more of the scarf, just dropping down like this and then we'll add a nice little fringe. So what I'm doing is just pulling that color down and creating this nice and lovely detail. Now, just use the tip of the brush and continue with the blade here as well. So to make it a little bit more cute, I'm just adding little bit of pink blushed cheeks. Just drop in some color, pick it up with the tissue and then just nicely blend it in with the tip of your brush. Use a clean brush. So we just need it for a little highlight. Next up are the hands. So we're just going to do very, very simple pigs. You can use the same brownish color that I used before and more red. You can keep it a little bit of more brown towards a more brown side. And just adding to this tiny little twigs. So nothing much. Just use the tip of the brush. Make sure you have more pigment and less water so that they don't bleed and they are more defined. And just if you'd feel it's lighter, you can add a little bit of darker tone to it. And then lastly, the most important element, which is too tiny buttons. And don't forget to leave those two tiny button holds for added cuteness. Alright, so that's about it. And the next one, I have a sweet little cute the norm. So we'll start painting that in next part of the class. 4. Red Gnome: Okay, so now let's start with our second one. And this time we're going to try the red. But what I'm gonna do is I'm just going to tone down the red algae bit so that we get that nice rustic and vintage fields. So to tone down the red, you can add any kind of brown to it or a little black to it. If black looks too much, then you can always add brown. A little bit pink also I'm adding because I don't want it to be really, really bright red, but a very muted, nice maroon, kind of a red. Maybe. You can look at your colors and your color palette, what you have available with you. And according to that, you can just turn it down a little bit. I'm starting with the head. I'm just going to do an outline. And since we are keeping the illustrations really simple and fun and cozy. So I'm using very simple techniques. I started with an, with a brush outline and then I'm just filling in the color. And we'll be adding a little bit color here and there. The darker parts and lifting lighter color for that nice and beautiful highlight. I'm going to use the same color but more pigment and create a brim of the hat, which is more of like a Fourier kind of a thing. So I'm just using the same color tone, but a little bit darker. And I'm using the tip of the brush and we're just creating a sort of a border like this. It is going to bleed a little bit into the hat. And I really want that effect. But if you don't like that bleeding and bleeding off the colors, then you can wait for the top bar to dry before you do this. Usually I'm just using the tip of the brush here and doing this step, tap, tap, tap and giving it a nice rough edge. And the look of that fluffy kind of a look and look. And the same for the bom, bom for the hat. I'll start with a bottle and then fill it in by just dragging the color from the border. You can see already we can see that nice and fluffy look on the head. And the red is also a little bit toned down and not that, not very bright. So now let's go ahead and start with the face. So again, I'm using the tip of the brush and less, very, very less black. And I'm me, I painted the nodes like this. And then we're doing the build. So we are just trying to do the shadow parts of it. So make sure that the black that you have on your brush is very, very light. Don't want to overdo it because it's very hard to lift it up. So very, very, start with very light and just a few strokes here and there. And you are done like this. You can also lift up any extra color that you have. I think I'll be adding one more layer to this just to highlight it a little bit more. Now let's start with the rest of the body for the norm. And it's very, very simple and easy. We just have to do just the shape of the robe. I'm just using a little bit of brown here. And to meet the brown a little bit brighter, you can add a little red to it or add pink to it. So you can use any of those, the burnt sienna or burnt umber. Again, very simple technique. I'm trying just outlining it. And then after that, just dragging that color inside, wash your brush and then just add the color that you put in the outline inside. And it really gives you a nice and beautiful effect. Liftoff the color, add a little bit here and there. And that techniques, or this technique always works. So same way we do tiny sleeves also like this border and then just fill the color in. Wash our brush, lift it up if you aren't adequate color if you want. Just like that. And then for the gloves, again, the same technique that we used for the beard. I'm just going to add a very light gray highlight just to paint. And that's enough for painting the gloves. You can drag the color inside a little if you want. Otherwise you can just leave it like that. Also. For the nodes, I'm going to use very, very less ocher yellow or a little bit of pink, mix it in it and very, very kind of a blush, kind of a tone. And just fill that up in the nose just to give it a nice little bulb and a little highlight. So the head is now nice and dry. So let's do some final touches on it. So I'm just taking the darker pigment. And again with a very, very soft hand and free hand. And just using the tip of the brush and dab, dab, dab, just to create that flighty, fluffy look of the hair, then did some fringes and for coming out and flowing. So for both the rim of the hat and the Bumppo, i'll I'll I'll add some lines to the hair just to give it that vintage and rustic touch. So just like this, use the tip of the brush with the darker paint and just draw in some lines. And you haven't done it into some checks are played. And just again, after horizontal or vertical, you can do horizontal lines as well like this. This kind of a play look really adds to the vintage feel that we wanted and that cute farmhouse look. So I hope you enjoyed that. Lead to the next one. 5. Green Ugly Sweater: So here we are on our last Christmas illustration and last Christmas color that be using today, which is green. So make sure you use a little bit of tone down green. So use the darker green that you have in your palette. Or you can add little black or brown to tone it down a little. So it's very, very exciting. This one is an ugly Christmas sweater. I try my best to make it as ugly as possible. Starting with the trees with three triangles stacked on each other. Very, very basic. Just like this. Then do little brown trunks. Now we'll start with the outline of the sweater. So I'm just doing the bottom. Like this again, I'm using kind of a yellow green on darker green that I have with using the same technique of doing the outline first and then dragging the color in to fill it up. Again. If you're worried too much about the colors bleeding, then you have to wait for the Christmas trees to completely dry. And here, I just want to get that kind of look where there are fibers which are mixing and blending in. So I don't mind the trees bleeding in a little bit. And then I'll start with this leads. Making them a little bit shorter, like kind of threefold sleeves. If you want full, then you can start, make a start painting these leaves right where the obese of the sweater is. For this, I've just done an outline of a border and then fill it up again with lines so that when we are just going to leave as is and you're not going to blend it in. It's going to be a little highlight for this lease, the same technique, outline and then just blending the color in a little bit. You can keep this leaves a little bit darker than the sweater just to give it a nice on trust and highlight some more color for this one. Let's do the neck with a nice border. So again, the same green I'm using, if you are mixing color than make sure that you have enough. What the technique that we did in the sleeves and the border of this leaves the same thing. I'm going to try here. Nice outline. And again the same lines, the tip of the brush that we did before. Just like this. Then just let it dry a little. And on. So this is dry. You can add some more details because we have to make it a little bit more. Over-the-top are too many elements. That sort is a signature style of the ugly sweaters. I'm just adding some more stars here and there. You can add hearts and add more lines. Maybe one more Christmas tree here and there. So it's up to you. I'm just going to i'm I'm using the same green, very, very dark and adding a few. So I'm just doing very basic star shape with the brush. So let's add the same border that we did for the sleeves and the neck, the bottom as well. The same thing and then the word lines. I think it needs a little bit more stars. Here. I'm just going to add that little bit of more detailing onto the powder. Just ending that using the tip of the brush. Just like this. The same thing. I'm just touching the brush. The same thing we can do for the neck as well. If you don't like it that much, you can always take some color blended in and just remove it. Okay, so I think I'm just going to highlight the trees a little bit because they have become really, really light. Just adding a second layer on it. And this time this done in the triangles, I'm just adding a little bit more detail and swell that very, very geometric triangle shape. Just with the tip of the brush as if the branches are coming out. Just like this. And then finally the tiny drunks. Okay, so that's about it. I hope you enjoyed doing these three cute vintage style illustration, Christmas illustrations with me. You can use these in your Christmas cards. You can cut them out, make ornaments out of them, gift tags. There are so many creative possibilities and I really enjoyed painting them. And I hope you had as much fun as I had. And in the next part of the class, I will let you know about your class project. 6. Class Project : Alright, so that's about it. I hope you enjoyed the class. These are the three illustrations that we painted in red, blue, and green. And for your class project, I want you to paint any one of these if you want, you can go for all three. But as a project you please submit, can please submit any one of them, which is your favorite illustration or your favorite color. You can swap the colors like you can do red for snowman, you can do blue for the norm. Like that. You can also swap but follow the same techniques that I have taught. You. Choose any one of these, choose any one of your favorite color, and then please submit it as your class project. I'm so looking forward to your submissions and if you have if you have any questions, please let me know. I wish you all the best and I will see you in my next class. Till then. Thank you and bye-bye.
