1. Introduction: Hi, I'm Jake. And in this class, I'll show you how you can create a cool movie trailer, logo or title reveal. You don't need to have inexpensive plug-ins to create this template. All you need to have is any version of Adobe After Effects. Free trial version works too. I'll share with you all my personal tips and tricks which you need to know to create this animation. This class is great for beginners because I take my time to explain each and every step which I make. This class is great for experienced Adobe After Effects users to, because I'll show you a few cool techniques which are pretty unique in creating motion design. You can just download a free trial version of Adobe After Effects if you don't have the software yet. And we will start from basics and gradually we'll get to more complex stuff. I think it's the best way to learn the software while creating interesting effects for fun. And to complete this class, our goal is to create this school movie trailer Tile effect. I'll be happy to see it in my class as also your result after following all the steps. So let's get started. 2. Text Animation: Okay, so I'm using Adobe After Effects to tabs and 21, but you can use any version of Adobe After Effects, it will work fine. First of all, let's change our layouts to standard. So we would see the same windows which you can see on your screen. It will be on mine. But if for some reason you cannot see some of the panels which you can see on my screen. You can go to Window and enable it from here. For example, a character, character. So let's create our first composition to create composition, and we can click here on New Composition or here. Let's call this composition source text. Make sure that it has dimensions of Polish d 1920 by 108030 frames per second and 15 s should be enough and clear. Okay, So in this composition, we want to create our text. To read our texts, you need to click here on this horizontal type tool, leftmost ligand it here and our window, you can let more sleep, Hold and drag. To create our text box. This text box, we can type our text. So let's type every game. Then we can choose the selection tool. And here an Align panel. If you cannot see this Align panel on your window, you can go to Window and enable it from here, align and make sure that it is in center of our screen. Align vertically, align horizontally. Also, we can go to paragraph and make sure it's in the center, and then go back to Align and align it horizontally. Here you can choose Character panel, whichever font you want to use. In my case, I downloaded from the web, Rousseau one pond, which is free, link to it, will be in the solution to this video. So let's click on it and increase the size right here. I'm going to set to 155 because it's exactly the numbers which I chose. Also, I've decided to squish a bit in vertical space. So I'm going to say to 90 and the spacing, I'm going to change to 44. And in this video we are going to animate this text. So we would have some kind of animation just like this. As you can see, we have here 3D rotating of the letters. And later we can place it any logo inside of this text. So let's create this animation for text. To read the animation for texts, you need to click here to this drop-down menu. Here and animate. You need to click on this little arrow and change to enable per character 3D, which will allow us to rotate each character in 3D space. Next, we need to click here once again and choose rotation. Because we want to add animation to our rotation of each letter. So here we can choose whichever notation we want to use. Also n, y axis, and z axis. By the way, if we would want to rotate in x axis, we could even change here in a more options, the anchor point. So it will rotate from the center of our letters, just like this. So here, anymore options you can choose wherever you want to place your anchor point. So let's set this exploitation to zero. And we will rotate only NY predation. So about here at nine frames, as you can see here, I'm at nine frame. We can set this value to 70. So it would be almost rotated to 90 degrees. But in case if I'm going to set to an idea, you can see that some of the letters almost disappear. For this effect, we don't use any plugins, so we will only simulate the 3D field of each letter, but as you can see, it doesn't have any depth. So this is why we want to rotate only 70 degrees. And later we will take some 3D depth. So let's create a keyframe. Click on this stopwatch on about 2 s and 20th, three frames. As you can see here, 2 s, 23 frames. We can set back to zero. So what is key-frame? Key-frame is basically point in time, which remember, is the value of thorium property. In our case, this keyframe at this moment in time, which 2 s and 20th three frames. Remember is the value of zero of the property rotation. In this moment in time, we've created another keyframe which remembers this moment in time, which nine frames. It remembers this value of 70 degrees. And our property rotation, basically now Adobe After Effects will change this rotation from 70 degrees to zero. Basically from this keyframe to this keyframe. So if I'm going to scroll through, you can see that this value changes. And this is how animation works inside of Adobe After Effects. If we will change this work area by clicking on this edge and drag it here. We can press zero numbered to see the preview. You can see we already have this animation, but if we can create more interesting dynamics. So let's select all of these keyframes. Leftmost click, and select both of them. And press F9 on keyboard It will make this motion start slow than a bit faster and slow towards this keyframe. We can also go to graph editor by clicking here. And you can see this motion in this graph, which basically means that here is low moment, then rapid movement and slower. And to amplify this motion, we can select this second keyframe and drag by this handle, leftmost click and drag to the left, which basically means that this motion will start rapidly here and then slower towards the end. Let's press zero or not. But to see how it looks. You can see now we have this smooth animation. So let's go out from graph editor. Let's also add another animation. By the way, if you will scroll with the wheel on the mouse while your cursor on top of this window, you can zoom in or zoom out your window. So let's go to this Add button, which is not here, under Animate is right here. And we need to click here to create a property which called tracking. With this tracking, we can change this value and spread these letters. Here at zero frames. I want to change this value to maybe 240. So we will spread these letters. Then let's create a keyframe. And on this keyframe, which is last one, we want to create another value which is zero. So basically we've created this animation of this letters all coming together. Once again, we can select these letters and go to graph editor. And we can select this last key frame, drag it to the left. So we would have this kind of smooth ending. And this one we can drag it also to the left, which means that this motion will start rapidly and slower and slower towards the end. Let's go out from this web editor. And with discrimination of these two animations, we can get this really smooth and trailer like animation. And finally, we can add some logo inside here. So I've added this logo inside of this text. I basically double-clicked on my text and edit. Few spaces here, just like this. And let's press zero numbered. And as you can see, now we have this space for any logo which we want. You can change now to any other texts. And this animation will still applies to our text as you can see you. Okay, so let's import some logo. You can let mouse double-click here in project panel or go to file import file. So these files will be available in resource step to this class. You can just drag them and import in this text documents, you can find the links to the fire image logos if you want to choose any other logo. And also the link to this Rousseau font. So let's invert our fire logo and particles. Click Import. And let's place this logo here inside of our source texts. Just left mouse click and drag it on top of this text. Now we can just select this and move it wherever you want to place it. Also, we can press S on keyboard and change the size. You can size it down to whatever size you want. It would look fine inside of your text. And let's also animate it. You can click on our text and press U on keyboard to see this last keyframe. And at this point, we want to create a keyframe for scale. So once again, select your logo, press S to see the scale. Create a keyframe for it. Because this is the look which we want to have a d and then drag it to beginning. Here, we can size it up as high as you want. In my case, I've used value of 420 and also select this last keyframe. Go to graph editor. And once again, make sure that your animation starts rapidly and then slower towards the end. And after this animation, you can still move around this logo to make sure that it stays and right place at the end. If you want to change the size of this logo, just make sure that your time cursor on top of this. Let's keep reading. In this case, you can change the size. And it will not create any other animation. Because if you will change while your cursor is another place, like here, you'll have two types of animation. It will go to this moment and then to this moment. So make sure to not create any additional keyframes. So I'm going to delete this one. And we will left with this animation. Make sure that in the graph editor, It's still has this kind of graph which will go faster and slower at the end. We can also make sure that this one stays here. So now let's press is zero number to see how it looks. You can see now we have this perfect smooth animation. In the next video, I'm going to show you how you can create this kind of debt to our letters. See you next video. 3. Creating Reflections: So in this video, we are going to create this kind of death to our letters. We need to create another composition. So let's click here or go to composition, new composition. And let's call it bevel. Click. Okay. And this time we need to select our source texts and drop it inside of bevel composition. Here we still have this kind of animation. And now to get these kinds of edges, we need to add some kind of h on top of our text. So for this, we need to select our source texts and right mouse click on it and go to layer styles, inner glow. But this inner glow right here, we can change the blend mode to Multiply, which basically means that we can change to darker colors like black. So make sure here in color change to black. And scroll down and here in size, you can see how we can add this inner shadow. And we need to change the type of shadow which we got. So let's change this technique from softer, too precise. In this case, we can get this really nice and tight edge. So as you can see, if we will use this kind of smaller value, like three, we can get this kind of tight edge on each of our letters is also on our logo. Then we need to create a new adjustment layer. So let's go to layer, new adjustment layer. So with this adjustment layer, we want to get rid of this kind of edge here, look of our shadow. So let's go to effects and presets. Waited for this to load up. If you cannot see this effects and presets panel, you can go to Window and enable it from here, Effects and Presets. And let's type here Fast Box Blur and drag it on this adjustment layer, just like mostly. And drag on adjustment layer. Here we can add some blur radius. Let's set it to 1.2 iterations. Let's change it to one. And also click on this repeat edge pixels with the combinations of these values, you can get this blurriness, which is you can see, makes it a lot smoother, which is exactly what we want. So this point you might ask how this would work. So let's create our final composition in which we are going to add all of these effects together. So let's click on this Create New Composition button. And let's call it Final Comp and click. Okay. And let's drag this Bible inside here, and let's scroll through to see this last point. This moment, if you are familiar with After Effects, you could say that we can use just simple bevel effect. So let's try Bible Alpha. And if we will increase the edge, you can see that we already have this kind of h, which gives the illusion of 3D, is pretty easy effect. But in our case, we don't want just to have this kind of black and white lighting on our letters. So let's see my original example. You can see that we don't only have this kind of lighting, but we can also see some details and multiple colors inside of this Bible. This is why we don't just use this level Alpha, which kind of looks similar. So let's do it. Instead. We are going to use the CC glass effect. Let's type here CC glass. And to use this sea glass effect, we don't want to use on this bevel effect itself. We will use on the background. So let me show you how it works. But first of all, let's save this project because After Effects can crash from time to time. So go to File, Save As, and save whatever you want. Okay, so let's see how this works. So first of all, we need to create a background composition. So let's click here on greed in your composition. Let's call it BG for background. And click Okay, Here let's drop this fire image, which I provided in resource type to this class. So let's click and drag it to this decomposition and drop it. So now we have this kind of background. So we have this final composition in which we will have all of our effect. Here we have our source texts where we can apply our text and our logo and Bevel, we are going to change how much Bevel we're going to add in here and background, we are going to feed any images which will apply as lighting on our letters. So let's go to final comp. Let's add this BG composition. We can hide this bevel effect by clicking on this eyeball. And on top of this VG composition, we're going to apply this easy glass effect. So let's drop it here. As you can see, it already works. And to see our text itself, we also want to add Set Matte effect. So let's type here, Set Matte, drop it on our BG layer. Here. Let's change to babble. As you can see, we already have our texts back. Also, you can see that we have this light from our image on top of our texts, which is exactly what we want. Now we can even play around more with this kind of lighting on our texts. Basically, we want to add Motion Tile effect. Let's drop it on our BG layer, and let's drop it on top here. So it will work before all of our effects. And this order matters. Because if we are going to apply later, it will move all of our text. And if we will set it before, you can see that we are going to change the position of our image behind our text. So this is why this order of our effects really matters. So in our case, we want to add a bit of animation on our text. We can hold alt key on keyboard. As you can see, I'm holding Alt and left mouse click on this tile center. Here. Now we can write an expression. It will be easy. Expression type open square bracket. Then we want to apply this first value, which is 960. Then comma, and then type time multiply -250 and closed square bracket. So what this expression does, it tells to this opera, to after effects that we want to keep this first value. So let me disable this expression. This expression means that we don't want to move this background image left and right. We want to stay at 960. Fundamentally. With this second part, we are saying that if time goes on, we want to move each second to -250 pixels, which basically means that it will go up like this. So let's see how it looks. I'm going to click here. So this expression will apply. And let's make sure that this work area is a bit smaller because we want to preview only 3 s to see if it works. Now let's press zero numbers. So now as you can see, we already have our animation of the text itself. And also we can see that our image is running across of our letters. As you can see, it looks pretty well. But here you can see clear cut. Basically to fix this, we just need to click here on a mirror edges. So let's press here on out. But once again to see how it looks, now, it works pretty well. Let's apply some changes to CC glass effect to make this effect look even better though let's close it here. So now let's tweak the CC glass effect, open this surface and change from vg to bevel. Now as you can see, it already has this kind of Bible and it will change the softness, fight and displacement. We can adjust how this bevel looks. So in our case, if we will set the softness to really small value even to zero, you can see that we have this really tight babble which we want to add. Also, we can change this displacement if you like, or increase it if you want to have more distorted edge. In my original example, I've set it to zero, but for this class we can play around and set it to 77 to get a bit different result. Or you can just set to zero if you want. Also, we can change the height. I can set it to 100 because this is basically the same amount which I've applied here in my original example. But once again, here you can change to your taste. I'm gonna leave at 100. And to get this more tighter edge, we can go to bevel and select the source text, press U two times on keyboard. And here we can change size to one. And if we will go back to the final composition, you can see that we have this more tighter edge. I'm pressing Control Z and Control Shift Z to see the difference. So you can see we're getting more tighter edge. And finally, let's open this light part and we can change it to a perfect slides. And to see the effect from this property, we can create a new light. So let's go to layer. New light, changed it light type from spots to point and click. Okay, so now we have this kind of light and we can change how it will light up our letters. As you can see now, we have a lot more control over our texts. And it has even more this 3D field on it. And as you can guess, it works a lot better than simple bevel effect. If we're going to press P on keyboard and set it in z space to zero. You can see only the edge, which can give this really dramatic effect. So let's set one of the lights, maybe about here. And then press Control D to duplicate this slide. Select one of the lights. Press Control D to duplicate it, and then just move it lower and maybe below like this. So at this point you can move around your lights as you like to get different kinds of looks. In my case, I've set it at them like this. So we would see every letter by the edge. You can always change it in Z space like this if you want to add a bit of color, our text, but in my case I want to use it as black and all the edges will appear. Also here we can add some really cool trick on the light. We can go to layer new null object. And also let's click here on toggle switches and modes and make sure that this null object is 3D layer. Then let's set it above and select both of these point lights, select one of them, then hold shift and select other one. And with this pick whip, we can parents to this null object. So this is allow us to rotate only our null object and x space like this to get different kinds of lighting. Or y, x is to also play around with the lighting. But in my case, I want to rotate it in Z space. You can see it gives this nice shimmer on the edge of our text. So let's add some animation using expression. Basically you need to hold Alt key on a keyboard. Leftmost leak. You can see I'm holding Alt and let us click on this rotation stopwatch here. Let's type time, multiply 55. If you will increase this number, it will rotate faster. And Mike is 55, should look fine. And now, if you want to take a look frame-by-frame, you can see that these lights are moving in the circle, which looks pretty fun. So let's press your own to see how it looks. Now as you can see, we have pretty cool result. And next videos I'm going to show you how you can add this background with the lighting as also these particles and this 3D feel to our texts. So we would have a bit of extrusion and our text, I have this little dip. See in the next video 4. Finalizing VFX: So we already have this pretty cool effect. And now we just want to add a bit of depth to our title. It's pretty easy effect to create. Select our BG layer and press Control D to duplicate. So let's select this bottom one. We can press Enter on keyboard to rename it. Let's call it depth. This motion tile effect. We don't want, we can select it and press Delete to delete it here on this depth layer. So make sure to select it. Cc glass effect. We also don't want to have it, believe it as well. And now we want to add CC, radial blur, click hold, and drag on this that layer. Let's change it to paint in Zoom and amount. Let's set it to maybe minus V2. So we will see this effect beta, as you can see, we already have this fading zoom effect, which already looks pretty fun. With this amount. We can change it how far we want to have this kind of effect. And for some effects, it also looks pretty cool, but narrow case. We don't want to overdo it because we are going to apply an effect called curves. So let's type it here, curves, interface and presets and drop it on our depth layer. And here an alpha channel. We want to change this curve to higher value like this. It will make this H tighter. As you can see before and after. With this amount, we can decrease how much we can add this effect. And my original example, I've set it to minus five because I just want to give this little illusion, as you can see here, and not overdo it. With this curve right here. We can make sure that this page is tie. But also don't overdo it because we will get this region S and our text and some artifacts. So let's set it a bit lower, just like this. So play around with this amount and pick whichever value looks best on your text. So in my case, I'm gonna say two minus five. And as you can see, it already has this, also this light on our texts, which is pretty cool because you can add any moment, import any other image. For example, I am going to import a few other images so you could see how easily you can change the lighting. You can just open BG layer and just drop it. Other images, let's size it down. So we would see the image itself has also this one and this one. So let's go back to Final comp. And as you can see, we already have different kinds of light. We can change to R1. This looks pretty cool tool or this one. With these background images, you can pretty much change the fill of your text. It will still have this animation. So if you want, you can play around with different kinds of images. But as you can see, as brighter this image you're going to use, the more color you'll get on your text. So feel free to experiment with different kinds of images. I'm going to delete these images. And finally, let's add some background. Let's go to layer new solid. Let's call it BG as well. Make sure it's black. And click okay, set it below because this is our background. And let's add some lights as you saw on my original example, this warmer one and this cooler one. So let's go to layer new solid. Let's pick this color, which is more like a orange-ish. Something like this should work fine. Click Okay, and let's call it warm light and also click a key. In our case, we can even use a fill effect and drop it on top of it. Let's disable it and pick this color. So it will be easier to change to any other color if we want. Then we can just select this ellipse tool, just like mostly here and hold, it will drop down this menu and choose this ellipse tool and just create this kind of mask here in the corner. And this mask, we can open it. And mask feather is set to high value like this. We can even set it to highest value, something like 900, and even change the expansion. It will take much more space. Maybe let's set it to 1,000. So it will cover most of our background. And we can duplicate this mask once again. With this second mask. We can decrease this feather maybe to 500 or even 250 and change this expansion. So basically we would have this kind of bright spot and this overall light. And let's set it to add. So let's close it here and click here on toggle switches and modes to see these modes. Now let's set it to add. So basically it will also eliminate our letters. Then we can press T on keyboards and reduce this amount of our opacity. We can set it to 80. And I want to add this kind of Flickr We need to hold Alt key on keyboard, mouse click on this stopwatch and type the expression. This time we will go into type wiggle, open bracket. And first value is amount, how often it will wiggle. In our case, I'm gonna set to two, so it will not be so frequent. And second value is amount, how much percentage it will affect. So let's set to 25. So it will not go above 100 per cent and it will not go to 0% as well. So 25 should work fine. And just click anywhere, just like here. And if I'm going to solo this layer, you can see that we have this kind of wiggle. And let's press zero numpad to see itself. And as you can see, it's not that frequent. If I'm going to change this first value to Lake luteum, embrace zero numbered. We can see this really aggressive liquor. So I'm gonna choose you to two. And let's close it. Let's un-solo this. And we can also duplicate this layer, press M to see both of these masks and select both of them just like this. Select first one, hold Shift, select second one, and go to selection tool. And just move it here. You can also let mouse double-click on one of these points. And this will allow us to change the size as also to rotate it. We can set another kind of light here, and this light we are going to use as more cooler one. So here you can pick whatever color which you like. We can even press Control Shift Y, well-cited this cooler one and rename it to cooler light. And also we can change to other colors. So we would see this one is blue and this one is orange. We can also select this color light and press U double times to see our expression. And we can make this Flickr even less to one. So we would have a bit of difference. Also, we can press T on keyboard and change it maybe to 70. So it would be not so bright or 50, it's up to you how much light you want to use in your video. So let's press zero number to see how it looks. We already have this kind of lights at the bottom and our top. You can always change how much light you want to add. Maybe here let's set it to 70 or even 60. And also let's add some race here at the left top corner. And maybe let's make this light below 55 and this a bit brighter to somebody. So to summarise, without any plugins, you can just go to layer new solid and call it race. Let's set it to white color and click. Okay, then we want to use a preset which called codons. So let's select the skirt and effect and place it on race. As you can see, we have this kind of pretty cool effect. I'm going to press zero on up. You can see this pretty cool animation of Gordon's. If I'm going to press you on keyboard, you can see these keyframes. We can set it here, so it will start right here, and then right here. We can even add a bit more of animation. So make sure on this last keyframe, you can add amount of predations like to, to. This animation will be a lot more obvious. So now we don't need these colors. We can just delete this Tritone effect. We can open this transform effect, and here we can adjust our scale and height. In my case, I've used 25. Now we need to use a effect which called polar coordinates. So let's place it here, then set it to 100 per cent and change to react to polar. So we would have this kind of race, which comes from the center here with this scale width, you can change how these rays would look. Also, I want to use a package called linear wipe and set it just before this polar coordinates here is important to change this wipe angle to zero. Let's delete this keyframe on transition completion and change it to maybe 32. With this feather, we can just factor out this kind of edges. In my case, I've used 280. And basically now we can just move these rays about here. We can change it in this mode to screen. If you cannot see this moles, you just need to click on Toggle Switches to see these modes, set it to Screen. And also let's change this size to something big, like 275 and move it right here. Now as you can see, we have two bright rays. So to change that, we need to go to contrast and set it this contrast 23, and there's brightness to minus two. And also let's change this practical type, summary and noise type to spline Complexity, I want to change to one. So we would have only this kind of little gist of these arrays. To see this ray is better. You can just increase this amount, maybe to like 15. If you want to see them better. With this scale width, you can change too. If you want to have more of them. And once again, degrees this contrast, if you want just to have a little hint, just like this. And just by playing with these values, you can get the race, which you like without using any plug-ins. And finally, to get this effect to the next level, we can just simply add these particles, just like these particles, which is available in resources tab to this class. And drop it on top of your video. If you are interested, where you can get this kind of particles, you can just type on YouTube dust particles. And as you can see, some people are dropping these links to free stock footage. So let's drop this particles layer, change this mode to add and just move it to the left. So we would find these moments where we can see our particles more. You can also duplicate and right mouse click and go to transform and flip horizontal and also move it a bit if you want to add even more of these particles. So these ones will be cooler ones, which is white, and these ones, we can make lake buyer. So let's solo this layer and let's type curves effect and drop it on these particles. Now let's go to our blue channel and make curve like this to add a bit of warmer colors. Then ingredient Cheryl, we can add a bit of green and reduce here. And in red channel, let's add a lot of red. So we'll have this kind of really kind of look. And finally, with this RGB curves, you can increase or decrease the visibility of these sparks. So this is basically how you can get not only dust particles, but this kind of look of sparks. And finally, you can just simply go to layer, new adjustment layer and also add a curves effect and add a bit of contrast if you want. So it would look even more dramatic.
