About This Class
If you're like our family... we're "just in it for the t-shirt!" Whether it's a charity event, concert or sports team, the t-shirts accumulate fast!
This project is a great way to UPcycle those shirts... but if you'd rather not part with your memories, a wide variety of colorful t-shirts can be found at your local thrift store a a great price.Â
Follow these few easy steps to create approximately 40 yards of a continuous strand of colorful, machine washable, cotton, heavy worsted to bulky weight yarn out of each shirt.
Meet Your Teacher
me in a nutshell:
mom of 2 great young adults
wife of a wonderful husband
graphic designer by day
fiber and glass artist by night
somewhat obsessed by the creative process
blessed (or cursed) by fearless creativity...
I have been knitting for as long as I can remember, learning from my mother and grandmother. Always searching for an interesting project or technique, unusual fiber or stitch pattern. I've knit with yarn, wire and up-cycled yarn from old t-shirts (watch for a future Skillshare class on this technique!) My largest project by far was designing and knitting the Chuppah for my son's wedding.
I've also spent a number of years working with Stained Glass, designing jewelry boxes, picture frames and more. Ultimately, my goal is ... See full profile
Hands-on Class Project
You'll only need two things to get started and a third that will be helpful:
- T-shirts. Looks for shirts that do not have side seams or any type of overall sewn-on appliqués. Shirts that have printed-on designs are fine, especially if the design is above the underarm. The larger the shirt, the better... Aim for XL or larger. Thrift stores are a great source for shirts at a very reasonable price. Machine wash and dry your shirts before beginning.
- A good Fabric Scissor. When choosing a scissor, cutting through fabric is very different than cutting through paper or other household items. Fabric scissors are available at most craft, hobby and fabric stores as well as some big-box retailers. Once you've found that fabric scissor - hide it! Don't let anyone use it for cutting paper or anything else as it will dull quickly!
- A yardstick or ruler will be helpful but it's not necessary.
Deliverable: Show off a photo of your completed ball of yarn! What do you plan to do with it? The 3 page pdf file attached includes a printed version of these videos along with a knit Market Tote pattern that uses approx. 7 t-shirts worth of yarn.Â
Thanks for enrolling! Have fun!
