The Quick Start Guide to Procreate

1. Unboxing/Basic User Interface: All right, gang and welcome to draw, sketched and painted procreate. So the very first thing out you've unbox the procreate out now you downloaded it. What do you do now? Right. This is your typical user interface that you're going to experience right after opening the program. So we're going to approach this like you're brand new to digital art. We're gonna take it from the basics and build on up. So over in the upper left hand corner here, you see where it says gallery has an icon that looks like a wrench and a magic wand. This is your upper left hand menu. And if we tap on gallery, it brings you right back to your gallery. Tap on my artwork. It brings me back to my artwork. Now, we're gonna be dealing with each one of these menus in its own time. So if we open up the wrench icon, you'll see that we've got image, canvas share under share. There's a lot of the export options. We're gonna be going through each one of these in detail as an example. When we go to image, you see that we've got insert a photo. We're gonna be working on a program in which we actually have to insert a photo so we'll deal with these in the course of the lectures. We're not gonna go in detail in this lecture. Now, here, this is your adjustments panel. And if you're familiar with Adobe Photoshopped, Adobe Light room, any of the affinity designer products or affinity Voto these are typical adjustment layers . So we'll deal with these again in their own lessons. And in the course of different projects, this little s what looks like a ribbon tied around itself there twirled around itself. This is your selection, so you'll see that there's no drop down menu for this. But look down here at the bottom. You see the free hand in the automatic selected. This is your selection menu. So this controls what's called your selection mode. And now this one here controls. Once you've made your selection, it controls how you move your selection. So that's a little bit about the upper left hand corner. Now on the upper right hand corner. You've got your brushes menu. So here this is what's called a brush category. See how I'm moving down the brush categories and within the brush categories. You've got different brushes. Now when we double click on a brush that will allow you to edit all of the different attributes with that brush. You see, I can adjust this stroke, the shape, the grain, the dynamic. We're gonna deal with that all in their own time. In other lessons, in the lecture. So all you need to know now tap on that left hand side to get back to it. And this is how you select brushes to draw with. Now, if you click on little hand here, this is your smudge tool and notice it uses the exact same brush is so you can use a brush to draw. You can also use it to smudge. And now what do you think? The icon that shaped like the eraser to the right is absolutely the eraser icon, right? Notice the erasers use exactly the same brushes. So the brush palette folks is extremely important. And I'll tell you what One of the coolest things about procreate is the brushes that you can make with it. Now, right next to the eraser is the layers panel. Now, if you're familiar with digital art you know what the layers panel does, but let's go ahead and take this and swipe with your finger or your stylists to the left. You'll see you've got lock duplicate and clear swiped back to the right click on the end notice. Here you could adjust the opacity of the layer. You see how that's moving for me, and then you can select different blend modes. You see how those air turning blue? I'm going to keep it in the normal blend mode. And now let's go ahead. Tap on the gray icon here and you'll see we can rename the layer. There's an entire lesson on layers, but if you're familiar with layers from a digital art side, this is where you find your layer adjustments in procreate Now, right next to there is a circle. This is your color panel now. There are four different ways you could look a color. You see how the blue discus selected. There's an arrow pointing to it right now you've got that view you've got the classic view you could select based on value. Here, you got your H S B and your RGB values. Now again for artists that are familiar with that. You get to go. You've also got your hex key and then you can create custom pallets. We're gonna show you how to do all of that during this course. So no need to worry about it right now. Let's just go back to the disk and I want to show you how it works. If you click around the outside and you drag it with your finger or your stylists, it changes the hue. You move it top to bottom. It gets lighter and darker movement left to right. It gets more or less saturated. So that's a little bit on the upper right hand, men you. Now let's go over to the far left hand side and you'll see that we have to what are called sliders. This slider is your size of the brush. You see, my brush size is sitting right now about 72%. This is the opacity of the slider. I've got the brush down to about 41% opacity. And when I click this little thing in the middle, my color picker pops up. We're not going to deal with the color picker right now. We're gonna deal with color picker and a later lesson. But just know to get to your color picker that's like your quick select to get to the color picker that is gonna be one of your best friends. By the way, folks, now in a parting shot for last section on this left hand side here is the undue right here , that little backward looking arrow. So if you do something you don't like, you can always undo it. And then right below it is the redo. Because I don't have anything on the screen. I don't have it in to redo. So there's your undo redo. All right, those are the big three geographic areas in this procreate interface. Now we're gonna go through the next lesson, is gonna tell you what procreate is and what it's not. And then we're gonna launch right into a project to get you guys moving like pros. Alright, folks will catching the next lessons and we'll start moving some stuff 2. What is Procreate?: all right, gang. So let's talk for a minute about what procreate is. Now, this is the last lesson which you're not gonna really put anything on the page, right? We're gonna get right down to drawing here in the next one, but I want to show you how procreate is different from, say, Adobe illustrator or affinity designer. Now, if you've used Adobe Illustrator, you're familiar with what is called a vector based program. So let me just change over here. All right? Perfect. So a vector based program uses math. Now, this math means when we create a line, it has thes things called notes. Right? This was a node and the nodes had handles. This looks like this and you would grab the handle and adjust the node in order to change the line. This is not what procreate does. Procreate is a raster based program, which means it is pixel based. So procreate is a pixel based program, which means each one of these little dots on the screen is what is called a pixel. And so pixels work on the idea of selection. So when we see pixels like this and you make a selection up here. You draw around here and what you're telling procreate is all the pixels that apply within this selection, I want to select. Okay, so it's a little bit different because once its pixel based, it is prone to something called picks. Elation. Now, let me explain to you what we're doing here. When you go in to procreate, we'll go over here. You don't have to go anywhere. You just have to follow along and you create a new canvas. You see here that this square is 2048 by 2048 pixels, which means there are 2000 and 48 little dots this way. 2000 and 48. Little dots this way. Now your average screen on a screen monitor is 1920 by 10. 80. That's how many pixels are in your average monitor. So something of this size would be adequate to stretch to this size. But now, if you decide to blow this thing up toe like six feet by six feet, you're gonna have a lot more pixels per square inch, right? So that will distort. So pixel based image is prone to distortion. Okay, that is the big deal with all raster or pixel based images. So to do that, you need to be very aware. And here is Jeremy's rule for this. Choose a canvas close to the size you will be working with now. What does that mean? Right? Let's say that you have a image. Let's say that you're gonna put on a T shirt. So here's your T shirt right, And from here to here is roughly 24 inches. Well, if you're working at a minimum dots per inch of 300 24 times 300 that means it's got to be about 7200 pixels in order to clearly printed that size. If you're working on something like this size of 2000 pixels, guess what? You got to stretch it three times now, and because we have dots here, procreate will try to fill in the dots, and it will not do a great job. That's how your images turn out to be super blurry again. One of the best pieces of advice that I can give you create a canvas that is very close to what your actual application is going to be, so think it through folks. Are you creating a desktop icon? Are you creating a background screen saver or are you planning on using it in a T shirt, a mug or another type of print application? All right, folks, that's a little bit about what procreate is, how to begin with the end in mind and how it differs from a traditional program like Adobe Illustrator. All right, enough theory. Let's get into practice makes a marks on this thing. 3. Creating a New Canvas: All right, gang, Let's go ahead and get you set up right off the bat here. So when you first open procreate, you're going to see your gallery here. So this is my gallery front page. Yours is obviously not gonna look like mine, but you see up here in the upper right hand corner, so the plus sign is right here. Click on the plus sign and you'll see a new canvas. Now there's a couple different options you have. So this lesson is all about Walk me through how to create your first canvass. Now the canvas in procreate is similar to your workspace, so you'll see where it says screen size 27 32 by 2048 you see the P X. That's the pixel count, folks. So if you were to click on that, you would get a canvas that was the size of your iPad screen. Now you've got this square option. You've also got what's called four K resolution and you see that's 4000 pixels by 17 14. If you have a four K monitor, that's the resolution size of four came on there. Then you've got the A four which is 210 by 297 millimeters and then the traditional American four by six photo. Now, if you don't want any of these sizes, you can click on create custom size. So let's go ahead and click on that. All right, Now you see, it's got new custom canvas size. I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna create a square canvas 500 and then I'm going to make the height also 500. And now, if you are working in print, this DP I designation right here. You see where the arrow's pointing is absolutely crucial to you. If you are working in print, the bare minimum for a decent quality art print is 300 a. D. P. I or dots per inch. You see where it says color. This RGB stands for red, green blue. This is the color designation for monitors, So if you're working in print, it would be C M y que. Now RGB is what will work on for this particular course, so you don't have to do anything with it. You can just leave it alone, but realize there are multiple color scales. Remember, print is see him like a color for web and monitor is RGB. Now, if you wanted to go through and change it, let's call this canvas one. Now, let's say that this is a canvas you're gonna use time and time again. You enter it in and you see the blue done button click done. All right. And there you go. You've got a brand new canvas. Now you're saying Okay, well, that's great. But how do I get back to my gallery? You see where the gallery, Tavis, Let's go ahead and click it. And now we're back to gallery. Now I'm gonna come back over to this plus sign I'm gonna click on the plus sign and for the purposes of this course and to make life easy and to make the images easy, we're gonna go ahead and I'm gonna be working in an image that is this screen size. So let's go ahead. Open up a new canvas and click on screen size and you'll see I now have a screen that actually consumes all of my workspace. So to help you guys see what we're doing, this activity that we're about to do is going to be done on a canvas the size of the screen , all right and similar to before. Folks, if you click on gallery, you go back to your gallery setting. All right, that's a little bit about how to open a new canvas. Let's go ahead and make our first marks as I show you how to sketch in the next lesson, seeing the next one. 4. File Management : this lesson is all going to be about file management. So whereas in windows you have folders and the folders contained files and procreate you have stacks and the stacks have the projects in them. So I'm on my gallery here. The first thing I'm to show you how to do is how to create a stack. So what? I'm gonna dio I'm going to take this piece of art and I'm going to click and drag it over top. You see how this starts to turn blue underneath and then I will let it go now see what just happened? A stack is created. You see the term stack Now let me show you how to rename a stack can come into here And you see, I clicked on the stack name and now I can call it Demon one and done Now the stack has a name Now if I wanted to change the name I just click where it says Demon one and we can delete it and we can call it masks All right and done. Perfect. Now do I have other masks here? Absolutely. Let's take this Barong mask, click and hold Drag it over the stack and place it in the stack. There you go. That's how to create a stack and how to rename a stack. Now, how do you subtract something from a stack? So let's go ahead and take this blue mask and we're gonna click and hold I'm gonna come up over the mask You see how it turns blue I'm gonna hold And now I can drag it out anywhere that I want it So to see that again let's figure out where our stack went All right, we've got our mask stack Now the key here, folks, is the long pause. So we grabbed the Barong mask and I grabbed the blue masks and now I just move it wherever I want it. All right, So that's how you create a stack, how you rename a stack and how you remove something from a stack. Now let's say I've got a couple pieces that I might not want, right. You could go ahead and lead an entire stack going to select, and then you can delete. You can delete stacks the same way you can something else. So let me show you that. So you got a lot of these files, right? Let's say that I'm working on something. Oh, let's pick one that I don't really care about. Let's grab this value scale. Now I'm gonna show you how to work on an individual file. So let's say I want to change this value scale here, and I want to change the name. You see where it says untitled artwork. Tap with your stylist on untitled artwork. We can call this value scale. All right, Now, you see, the name has been changed A value scale. And now, if I wanted to do it again, I just click where it said Value scale. Change the name. There you go. So that's how you change name on a file or a project in procreate. Now, let's take a look up here. You see there, select import and photo. If you hit on selection, you'll see. Now you've got some different icons up here. You've got stack share, duplicate and elite. So two things I want to show you. If I'm on the value scale here, if you're on the icon and you click on it, you see how the blue check mark is created. Now you see that the share duplicate and delete comes up, we can duplicate that. We can delete it or making sure that I had the icon. You see that that blue check mark is back? You can share it, and that's the same is exporting it to a PSD A, pdf or JPEG. We'll talk about those here in a little bit. So now what happens if you don't click on the icon, the square, and you click on the name instead? Now you just rename it. So you want to make sure if you're selecting, click on the square icon. Okay, so that's how you create a stack, how you remove a file from a stack, how you rename a stack, how you rename an individual file and then how you could duplicate and delete an individual file. So when you're done making your selections, you see how this is an X up here. Let's go ahead and click on it. It now becomes a plus change back, and now you can new canvas it. When you change the death select. You see how it becomes an ex until you select Oh, file. You see that untitled artwork that butterfly half there Now I've got these options that come up. All right, The last thing that I'm going to show you on the gallery for file management, you can import from your iPad. If you wanted to import something in, we could import, or we can go up and we can grab a photo. Maybe I want to grab a photo of my dog. Cool. Now I've got a photo of my dog. And when I come out to the gallery, look at that. My dog is now in the gallery. All right, folks, that's a little bit on file management. One of the things that I'm very fond of. I like to keep my files very clean. Very organized, because it helps me not to have a messy desktop. All right, folks will get out of the next one, and we'll check out something else. 5. Importing from PC to IPad: All right, folks, and welcome to procreate. So one of the biggest challenges I had I am not a Mac user. The iPad is probably the only Mac product that I use. I got to admit bold my cell phone and my computer, RPC and Android. So what are the challenging parts of working? An iPad is being able to transfer files from one device to another. So what I thought I do here is I would make a very simple video of how we actually do it. So let's go ahead and get into that. Now. The program that I use 99.9% of the time is dropbox. Now, you could get Dropbox for free. You get up to two gigabytes as of this recording for free as a member. So when you go ahead and do that, what you're going to see is this particular interface. You can just go ahead and creating new folder. Let's call this Ah, I've had downloads. And now, once you're on Dropbox, you gotta iPad downloads. And then what you're going to do is you can put any file you want in that folder, so let's go ahead now let's upload a file to Dropbox. So I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna work in this procreate lesson here. I've got a procreate and we're gonna go down. I've got an icon that will go ahead and put in. This is exactly how I work in this. So once you go ahead and do that, it puts the PNG in the box. All right, so it's been uploaded. Now, let's go ahead and let's cut to the iPad interface. All right? Welcome back to my bed. So now what you're gonna do, you're gonna go ahead and you're gonna click on Dropbox. Now, this is gonna be super confusing right down here in this lower right hand area. You're going to see photos. So what you're gonna look for here under files is iPad downloads. All right, so now, once you go to files, you'll see the folder that you created iPad download and you'll see the procreate icon. Now you'll see these three dots. Go ahead and click on the three dots. In order to get a file from your Dropbox into your iPad, you can go ahead and export it now. When you exported, you see, there's an option here for save image. Now it goes ahead and saves the image. Now what happens when you do that? I can go over here to my photos. And today there is my image in my hi pat. All right, so that's how you do it. Let's go ahead and cut back to my desktop right now. All right, So now let's say that you're successful in that transfer. You can go ahead now and delete that image from your Dropbox, and it's gone existing on Lee on the iPad. All right, So Dropbox for me is the intermediary as a PC user between my iPad and my PC. All right, folks, that's a little bit on how that works. I hope that's helpful, because for me, it took a lot of time to figure out what the best software was. In order to accomplish this 6. Exporting Back to PC: all right. Gang walked back to procreate. So as a PC user, once you have a file on the iPad, I'm gonna show you how to get it back to your PC. So let's go ahead. We're starting off with my iPad and let's go ahead and let's grab a procreate file. And all I did is I took the icon from last time, and we'll just put couple things in here as a file. So now, once I do this, I want to go ahead and export. It is a J peg. All right, so we go through and I go and I saved the image. All right? Now, where did images end up on your iPad? Let's go ahead and go over here. Let's check out photos. All right, Now, we did this right? You'll see it down here in the lower right hand corner. So now we've got to take this thing from our photos and we've got to put it in Dropbox. So we bring up our Dropbox icon, we find the photo that we just did, and now we come over here and we go ahead and we move it. Now where we're going to move it to. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna move it to Dropbox. We hit, move! And now it comes over here to Dropbox. Now within Dropbox. Let's go ahead and move it into another folder. Choose a different folder and let's put it in iPad downloads, all right, and we hit. Move. All right, so now if we come over here, let's go ahead and come back into my desktop. You'll see. Now I have a file, and there's my file on my desktop. So that's how you go about taking a file from your iPad and moving it back to your PC. Once you're done with it, the files and the pictures work exactly the same way. You just figure out where the file is. You move it into your dropbox and you place it back in your folder. All right, folks, that's how to get files off your iPad. Back into your PC. All right, well, catching the next lessons 7. Building the Procreate Platform: All right, gang, welcome to procreate. So you've had a few lessons now? Not enough to really make a difference. Just enough to be dangerous. But well, we want to do is we want to get you actually working in procreate. Preview some of the things that you're gonna do in the next lecture and get you a chance to begin creating. So what we're going to do today is we're gonna go through and we're gonna create the procreate platform. So in order to do that, you're gonna click this little plus sign up here, and you're going to create a new workspace that is your screen size. All right, Now you know how to get an image from your PC to your desktop on procreate. So we've included an image for procreate. So it's in the resource is for this lecture. You're gonna go to image, and you're gonna go to insert photo. So we go to all photos, we scroll down and you see this procreate image that we made now, using two fingers from the inside out. We're going to increase it. And now, because you can't see where the image ends, go ahead and you see the transform That blue icon is selected. Uncheck it. And now with your two fingers come from either corner and let's go ahead and minimize the workspace. All right, Now, how do you get back to the procreate image? Well, let's go ahead and hit the transform tool again, The blue Tool and let's go ahead and bring that to the top. All right, so now you've got all this space down below. Let's go ahead and de select that. Now What we're gonna do is I'm coming over now to the layers tab you see, on the far right hand area I've just collected it, turned blue. We're gonna go ahead and were to change the background color here to a dark black. So we come to the circle and we move it to black. And now we're gonna click on the layers tab again and you see this plus sign, I'm gonna show you how to add a lair. So now layer to has been created. Now grab this. Drag it down below simply by dragging it down with your stylist or your finger. And now we're gonna come over to our brush. I'm gonna use the soft brush. So that is an airbrushing soft brush. We're gonna come over here and I'm gonna go with kind of a dark grey. Maybe somewhere over here you see where I am in that inner circle. So there's no color involved. It's just a dark tone, a gray. And now what I'm going to dio is I'm just going to begin softly marking on my layer. That's black. Now you see what's beginning to happen here, starting to get a little bit of a pass ity. I'm gonna go ahead and crank this opacity up just a little bit cause I don't want this to take all day and you see a but the top I'm leaving it fairly black and then is it goes closer to the bottom. I'm now making it a little bit more opaque. This is the trick. This is how you shade with that airbrush. Now, when you go through here, let's go one step further. Let's bring this up toe like a pretty close toe white. So I'm not going full on white, But it's definitely a lot brighter than what I had. I'm gonna crank down the opacity and now you see where my brushes, that little circle, like on I'm still on layer to check out my lair structure. And now, just halfway on halfway out, you see, Now I'm just beginning to highlight this, all right? Now even want less opacity than that as I go up, and I'm just brushing in a little bit more of that white. All right? So I think we're pretty good there. This is going to be the stage for all of the art that you're gonna create as we go through . You're gonna have a complete gallery of art in this procreate stage. So this is what you were able to do so far with just a few lessons. This is kind of what you're gonna learn about layers and how to shade and how to soft change in next lessons. So this gives you a pretty good idea of where we're headed and it gets you started early. Now, to finish this out, let's go ahead and hit the actions tab, which is the wrench? Let's go over to share and let's share it as a J peg. Export it now you can export it to Dropbox, or you could just save it is an image I'm gonna go ahead and save. It is an image. And now, if I go over to my photos, look at what I've created over here. I now have my image that comes up. Congratulations. You've just created your procreate platform in procreate. All right, folks. Now, right after this, there's an assignments folder. What I want you to do is take a screenshot or upload the J peg of what you just did into the assignments folder so that we can take a look at what you did. All right. Gang will talk to you after the assignments lesson, and we'll get on to the next ones seeing the next ones. 8. Taking a Screenshot in Procreate: All right, gang, welcome back to procreate. So in this lesson, it's literally going to be about a minute and 1/2 right? I'm just gonna show you how to really quickly take a screenshot using the iPad. All right, So I'm gonna go ahead and open up this rocket ship. Now, when I open up the rocket ship, watch what happens. I'm coming over here to the right hand side of my iPad, and I'm gonna hold the power button and the home button at the same time, so watch what happens. All right? Now, you see, the screenshots been created. Now I have a screenshot I know he had done, and I can save it to my photos Now, when I come back into my photos So let's go on over here. Go back to the photos, and there is my screenshot folks right there. All right, so that really is in one minute how to perform a screenshot on your iPad. All right, let's get into some more exciting lessons. 9. Basics of Layers : All right, folks went back to procreate. So this is one of the most fundamental lessons in all of digital art, right? This is the lesson on layers. Now I'm in my gallery. Let's go ahead and let's open up a new document. And now the layers pad is right here where it turns blue. You see, I've got some different layers now. Layers can be thought of as panes of glass I like to think of is his sheets of mylar from the old overheads used to have in math class. I don't know. Most of you are old enough to remember that. But if you think about it, they're like transparent layers of film that you stack one on top of one another and layers are common in every type of digital art. You have to get used to him there, the fundamental basis of digital art. So in procreate, you find your layers here and now you see, you've got a background layer, you can change the background color around. We're gonna keep it bright white, and then you've got this layer here. Now the first thing I'm gonna show you how to do is rename the layer. So with the lair selected, just tap on the layer and now hit rename. Let's call this base one. Oops, one. There we go. And then we tap somewhere else outside of their. And now we've got a layer called base one. Now, let's go ahead and let's swipe to the left. Now, there are three options here. When you lock a lair, watch what happens. We hit lock, and that little lock appears right next to the base. Locking a layer means you can't modify it. So this is actually very powerful because as your layers begin to stack, you don't want to mess with them. Once you get in the way you want him. So let's go ahead and swiped back to the left. And now you can duplicate a layer. Let's say that you draw something on that layer, so I'm just gonna go ahead. I'm gonna draw something here. I'm just gonna grab a sketching brush, do it in red. Why not? And I'm locked out. Okay, so we have to open layers and we gotta unlock the layer in order for me to sketch on it. Okay, Once I've sketched on it, what's going and duplicate. Now that creates completely new layer with the same name. So let's go and rename will call this base to All right, so let's continue on with base to. And now, if we don't like that layer, so we want to take it out of the mix. We delete the lair, so those are all the menus that are available to you when you swipe to the left. Now let's say we want to add a lair. You just click on the plus and a new layer is added. So we're gonna rename this. We'll call this top. All right now. That's how you add a layer. Now let's say that you want to move it to the bottom of the stack, this little gray square here, click and hold and drag. Now what does this do? Let's go in this top layer and let's go ahead and make a green circle so we select the top layer. Let's turn off the base layer to turn off a layer. All you do is you uncheck the box. Now we make a green circle. Now watch what happens when I turn back on my Red Square. Now that becomes visible. Turn it off. Turn it on. Now you see how Right here. The red square is on top of the green circle. Let's go ahead and move the top layer back to top. And now you see how that totally switched up. So that is how you readjust a lair. So in this lesson, so far you've learned how to add a lair. You've learned how to delete a lair. You've learned how to reposition a lair. Now, the next thing I want to show you here, let's go ahead and click inside the gray square here, and we already covered the rename. Now, if you want to select, you can select everything that is in that layer and you'll see the marching ants that kind of go through and make this kind of a marching gray color. This is selection, so it'll select everything on the layer. Now, if you want to copy the layer, come over here and you see that we've just copied the layer. And now if we were to paste it, you'd be able to pace the layer. You could fill the lair and it pulls the color from the color palette. You see, the green color up there, you can clear the layers. Say I don't want any of it that completely clears the layer, scorches the earth and allows you to start fresh. Then you can do what's called Alfa locking. There's an entire lesson on that. All I need you to know here know where to find it. There's a mask option again. Masking has its own unique lesson. You don't need to worry about that right now. There's what's called a reference layer. We'll deal with that when we actually begin painting. So don't sweat that right now. We'll get to that in due time and then you can merge down. So let's do this. I want to show you what this looks like. We're gonna make sure we're on this top layer. I'm going to create a green circle again. And now with my layers selected, I'm gonna merge it down. Now watch how to become one power two shapes, one layer. That's the power of merge. Now I'm gonna go ahead and undo that. And now to undo that, you consult the gestures. Lesson groups too far. All right, so now we're back here. You can also combine down. Now. What that did you see here? There's a brand new thing that's created. It's called a group. Groups take different layers and combine them together so that they move in unison. Watch what happens When I had this little downward arrow. It closes the group when I opened the group. Both layers are present. Grouping is covered in a completely different lesson because it's all about file management . So all you need to know now there's a difference between merge and combine will cover grouping of layers in a completely separate lesson. All right, folks, that will get you started on layers. Layers are extremely powerful, and we'll be working with them really quick here in the first actual project. All right, folks will talk to the next one. 10. Basics of Brushes: All right, gang, welcome back to procreate. So I'm on my gallery here and I want to talk to you just a little bit about brushes. Because brushes are the heart and soul of procreate, right? We as artists love brushes. We like the additional tools, brushes, layers and blend. Modes, I would say are 99% of digital art. So let's go ahead and let's create a new canvas, All right. And now we're gonna just explore the brushes tap, because again, this is all the interest stuff, folks, I promise you were gonna be laying down some serious strokes here in a little bit. So when you look at brushes, procreate comes with a lot of different brushes. You've got sketching, brushes, inking calligraphy, painting, and the list goes on and on and on. Now every artist has their own favorite brushes, depending on what kind of art you dio. And so many people fall into this falsehood that the magical brush will make them a better artist. That's not the case. But you do have some really cool brushes for some really cool applications. So what I'd like to do here is I'd like to just take a couple minutes, show you some of my favorites and then show you how to go into a brush and look at the adjustments. Now there's complete lessons on adjustments here later in the brush section, as well as we're gonna be making our own types of brushes. But I want to get you familiar with the overlay of brushes so that you see what's available in procreate. So one of the things you're gonna want right off the bat is sketching brushes. Now all of these are on the default, so I tend to use the six B pencil a lot. So the six b pencil turned this all the way up. Looks a little bit like that. And now when you go down the brushes, their different properties, you can adjust this spacing of things. You see, how is the spacing begins to get wider. The brush tends to be a little less dense. One of your best friends, folks, is the streamline function. This takes all of the little bumps and jumps out of your stroke. Now in a sketching pencil. It's not really that important, but when we get to the inking pencils man, streamline is life. I'll tell you what, So you'll see. This is all down here under what is called the stroke panel. You see where it's blue down here in the lower left hand corner. Now you can tape or the stroke more. You see how that begins to adjust a little bit. You see how it's getting a little less opaque. You could also adjust the opacity in the size. We'll talk all about that and brush adjustment. What I need you to understand right now is that there are adjustments for every type of brush. Now there's the shape panel. There's the grain panel. We're gonna be talking about grain here just a second. The dynamics of a brush are important. You can even control how your apple pencil moves. So you see this pencil option? If you tell the apple pencil, you can set a brush up to respond to the tilt of the apple pencil. The general tab, which I think is probably one of the first ones you should touch, will again talk about this and brushed adjustment and one of the most exciting things here , folks, for procreate. You got to get this through your head here, there's two variables to every brush. Every brush has a shape source, so this is a rectangular shape source, and procreate comes with a library of different shapes. Sources. So let's go ahead and tap on that. You can swap these out Now you see you've got dry ink. You've got Mess Inc mess flat marker. There's a lot of different ones. We're gonna be using a lot of these when we go into actually making brushes. So just know that the panel exists right now. See what's available, and then we'll work on them and work with all of these later. So the shape source is the shape of the actual pencil or the pen or the brush, whatever you wanna call it. The second part of that equation, the second partner of the dance, is what is called the grain source. Now the grain source is what shows through, so we can also swap grains and you'll see that in your procreate library. There's a lot of them already available. All of these what are called kind of seamless textures like the grunge, the sketch paper, the pastel paper are all textures or grains that you could apply to the shape source. So every one of these brushes that you see, we can go in here to the airbrushing. We can click on the soft airbrush, and we can look at the shape source and the grain source. You see, there's no grain. It is a flat white and the shape sources that nice, faded type of circle. So I'm gonna show you how to make one of these later in the brush lessons. So stick with me, just know it exists and know that with every brush you have both shape and grain. So again along the bottom, here's all the different adjustments you can make. And it is the unique combination of these that creates these really cool brushes. Now, if you're interested, let's say you're in sketching and you want to add a brush. I'm just going to show you this Could you can't resist playing with that. Go ahead and hit the addition. It'll give you an untitled brush. You can try to call this trial one, and now you pick a shape and then oh, we pick a grain. Oh, let's pick a brick texture. And now when we go back we have a brand new brush created, and now you can play with all of these to your heart's content. Right? You can mess with spacing. You can make it a little more dense. You could taper it out. You could do a whole bunch of stuff with it. And then if you just can't resist it, throw it down, then on the canvas. All right, that's a little bit about the brushes panel. This is the 10,000 foot view. There are five or six other lessons on brushes that we're gonna get to later in the course . But I want to get you started moving and put in some ink down on the page. All right. Folks will see in the next lesson. 11. Basics of Color: All right, folks, And welcome back to procreate. So this lesson is gonna be about 100% color theory. We're gonna be using procreate kind of to show some of the graphics, But this is the basis of all digital art color. So if you're familiar with this as an experienced graphic artist, you may want to skip this lesson. But if you're new to digital art and you're new to color, let's go ahead and get into it. So there are really three aspects of color in procreate. I want to show you. Let's go ahead and open this up. And now let's go ahead and bring up the color disk. Now, when we bring up the color disk, the first demographic, let's say of color, is going to be the hue. And you see the hue is this outer spinney circle here? Right? So the outer circle is what is called the hue. Then you've got the saturation. So saturation is this inner circle and it runs from the left to the right. Further left, You go. The less saturated it is, the further to the right you go. The more saturated it is now the third dimension of color is brightness or lightness, depending on what you want to call it. And this moves up and down. You see, up here at this area, it's very, very bright. And down here it's very, very dark. All right, so that's the color wheel. Now let me show you how procreate represents this. You have a classic layout and now you've got the same things. Your hue slides this way. Now watch the little circle Notice it didn't change when I adjust the hue. But now watch me adjust the saturation saturation A just left and right Exactly like I said . And your brightness adjusts accordingly. So brightness runs up and down. Hugh runs through this slider and doesn't move a little circle and saturation moves a circle from the left to the right. In this way, every color of the rainbow is possible. So now let's take a look at the value sliders you'll see here. You've got HH s b. This names were hue, saturation and what they're calling brightness. I call it Lightness hs l HSB kind of the same thing. Now the three letters that are important here these air R G and B Now, if you look at a digital device, all of the colors that you see on a digital device come from a combination of red, green and blue. That's what RGB stands for. Now, if you're a print aficionado, you print in C m y que So this is my disclaimer most printers can print in RGB. But if you're working in print, you may want to check your colors done on the iPad to make sure that he's still translate in. C M Y K. This is why a lot of artists will do their work in the iPad and then turn it over to photo shop. That could do the conversion. Procreate. Onley works in R G B. All right now, the most important thing for you guys here is what is called the hex. A decimal code. You see that this Hexi decimal code here is 88 c 78 Any conceivable color you create. So let's make it kind of a reddish. Something that's a little heavier saturated. Maybe a brown is see 74 c one e. Now, if you have this code, you can match any color out there, right? C one e so there are a lot of websites to help you do it. What I'm gonna do here is I'm going to give you three new references that you may use You might find valuable, and I'm gonna show you how the Hexi Decimal Code will help you get there. So let's go ahead and go to the desktop for a second. All right, so we're on the desktop and I'm in a site called coolers dot co. All right, this is a color generator. And if you're doing design work, it's really cool because it puts together random colors for you. So let's check it out. Start the generator. I'm not gonna take you on a full tour of this. You can certainly go through the website, but she'll see down here, you've got the number or the hashtag or the pound sign, whatever you wanna call it, and then you've got a six digit code. This is the Hexi Decimal code. So let's say that you like this color, you can lock it and now watch what happens when I press space bar because I locked it. It will look at colors that might look good with that. So Let's say I like that I can choose another. And now if I want to adjust this, I can adjust the hue, saturation and the brightness folks exactly like we talked about. And they'll even give it to you in rgb c m y que All right. So let's say you want to see how this looks on the other side. You can drag it to the other side to see how this look close to that. So coolers is a great website. Now. You could do a lot more with it here, right? They've got a ton of settings. You can go ahead and click on a monochromatic theme. All right, so if we go ahead and we click that, it's unlock that, unlock that. Now you've got kind of a monochromatic thing going right. That would be really cool that it shows appear monochromatic mode. All right, so there's a lot of stuff you do with that. Now, let's see you like this color palette you can go through, and you can export it either as a PdF or a PNG, so you can then have a set of swatches with a Hexi decimal code that will allow you to find this. Now let's check out another website that you might not know about Design seeds. Now these people go through and they pull different photographs. And what ends up happening here is they create collections, right? So let's say here you can go here and you find a photograph that you like, Right? Let's take spring greens and you're able then to pull a color palette. Now, these guys do a great job. I would highly recommend you visit their site now. Later. What you're able to do is we can go through with the color picker and you can definitely grab some of these swatches that's covered in the how to create a custom swatch lesson. All right, so that's a little bit about design seats. Now, the last website I'm going to show you here is Adobe Color CC. This is completely free, and you've got your different choices. We're not gonna cover this in this lesson, but there are things called color rules. So let's say your monochromatic it will lock it into a certain hue, and then it will just begin adjusting saturation and such. You could do a triad. You could look a complementary color schemes which are completely across. Now watch what happens when you begin to twist this a little bit. You can begin to adjust and get some different complementary colors. And you see how I'm able to move these out and in. So you take one where you got shades. All right, so and then you can go through and you can bring the shades anywhere you want. So you want to do something in the yellow. Now you've got different shades. Now, the cool thing about this is take a look down here. If you like that color, it gives you the Hexi decimal code in order to do this. So there's a tremendous amount of flexibility in here, and one of the things we're going to do in the later color lessons we're gonna show you how to match this hex code into your palate to make sure that you're in good shape. All right, folks, there's some design resource of a color a little bit on color theory. Hope you learned a little bit of something. All right, let's go ahead and get down to the next lesson will show you how to work with color in procreate 12. Basics of Transformation: All right, folks. And welcome back to procreate. So let's go ahead and let's open up a new document. And now I'm gonna show you something. This little icon up here with the arrow. This is your object, your transformation to whatever you wanna call it. So what I want to show you here is one how you're gonna create a perfect circle, which means you're gonna have to be able to select it. And then I'm gonna show you how to use this object tool or this transform tool in order to do this. So, in your brush panel, let's go down and we'll grab the airbrush. Go to the hard brush. Now what? Most frequent things I get is Jeremy. How do you make a perfect circle and procreate? That's pretty easy here. Let's go ahead and just create a black circle. Now let's crank this bad boy all the way up. It's Kranthi opacity all the way up. And now let's make sure we got everything. The black color capacity up size, middle of the road and the hard brush selected. Just tap once on the screen. Uh, there is a perfect circle. Now let's look at our layer structure. Okay, so you've got your layer. You've got that based structure. Now, let's go over here and grab our item. Here are selection. Tool are transformed. Tool are object to whatever you want to call it. And now, the selection tool we talked about had the free hand and the automatic selection. This modification tool, this transform tool has freeform or magnetic. So let's do this. Come up. Let's add another layer and let's do the exact same thing. But now let's make this a red circle. Same brush, same process. Oops. Helps if I make it red. If I move it to the Hugh, Huh? All right. Perfect. Now we're going to select the black layer again. We're coming down here. Now. I want to show you what happens. Watch. You don't have to do anything with it. If you select that black circle notice here. If you drag the corner, you can adjust it any way you want. Right? So we're gonna use two fingers to undo Now. I can take it if I Greg in the middle of it. If I drag in the middle of it and I can put it anywhere, I want. This is free form. You see down here at the bottom with the blue, it's his free form. Now let's check magnetic exact same selection, exact same blue. But now you see what's happening with this. It's now looking for different areas where it can snap to. All right, so that's what the magnetic does for you. Now, let's go ahead and let's do a free hand. Let's go here. I'm gonna grab my painting brush. Time to grab my round brush and we're now gonna create. Let's create a green half circle. Okay? And to do this, bring it down here. All right, Now we're gonna grab our object. And now you see how it's got two things now. Why is that? Because they're both on the same layer now. If you don't want that, let's go Another route. How would you ever select? He intent Onley the green. Grab your selection tool. And now we'll go over this a little bit more in depth later. You see how Freehand is now selected Drag around here for free hand. Now you've Onley selected the green and tap on the movement tool. Now you are on Lee moving the green tool. Now with the green half circle still selected. Watch this. You see Down here at the bottom. It's got these arrows, flip, flip, slip, flip, rotate, rotate, rotate. That's gonna blow it up. And now how do you blow it down, folks? This is the gesture up. Down, up, down. Right. Remember your gestures from earlier. I'm gonna go ahead, and I'm gonna rotate this bad boy just a little bit. All right? Now, this one here, X out of the very last command you did, and you can undo it all the way back. All right, So the ex un does the transformation. There's undue. There's Redux. There's blow it up to the size of a small country. There's the rotation. There's flip it horizontally, lipping it vertically. And now if you go free form, you have the exact same options on Lee. You've got total freedom to move it wherever you want it. Now, if you decided you wanted to place it there, you see how there's no snapping going on. All right, so that's a little bit about how the selection tool and the transform tool work together in procreate. So if you're looking at a layer, select lair, then move the layer. This is the basis for all the crazy masking that we're gonna do later on in this course. All right, folks, that's a little bit on the transform tool. So let's go ahead and get into the next lesson, will put it all together. 13. Basics of Selection: All right, folks. And welcome back, procreate. So this lesson is one of the most important ones in the entire course. Right? This is the lesson on basic selection. Now I'm gonna show you two different selection methods, and we're gonna walk through the menus for the selection menu. But one of the things that I want to tell you is as we go through the course, I'll show you 100 different ways to select what you want to select. And remember, procreate is a raster or a pixel based program, so it works 100% on selection. Let's go ahead and start by opening a new canvas, and I'm gonna make this my screen size. All right, Now, you guys know how to do this. Now I'm gonna go over to my paintbrushes. I'm grabbing my round brush and I'm in heaven. Grab a straight up black color. Okay, I'm gonna make sure the opacity is up here on the slider. You see the slider moving up and down and I'm just going to draw a big old square. So follow along with me, folks. Draw big old Square And now divide that square into fourths, okay? so following with me now with that square selected, let's grab a green color. And now with the green color selected, click and drag and bring it into one of the squares, right? Doesn't matter. It doesn't have to be the upper right hand. You got the idea? Then let's grab a red color and we're in a click and drag the red in and you see how we're practicing everything that we did before. We're gonna grab a blue color, and then I'm gonna click and drag the blue in. And then lastly, I'm going to go with a yellow color and I'm going to drag the yellow in. All right, so I know this isn't terribly artistic. You guys air far beyond this. But this is about selection. Now, the selection property you're going to see, Let's go ahead and grab the selection tool. It just highlighted in blue. And now look at the bottom here, Right. You see, you've got free hand and automatic. Now I'm gonna show you how to automatically select, But I will tell you procreate is not great at it. What automatic selection will do if I'm gonna touch down on one of the green pigments. It will look for everything that is in that value of green. Now, watch this. I make sure to selected blue. I make sure that I am on the one and only later that I have. And now I'm gonna touch the green. Now you see how the green turned purple? That's one of the weird things. A procreate. Watch this. When I hit the brush icon, you'll see how everything went all marching ants except for what I had selected. Now watch this. This is where the magic happens. I'm gonna grab the red, grab a brush, and I'm gonna begin coloring and you'll see the only places that it colors is in the green because that is what I have selected. All right, When I'm done with the selection, I click off the icon. Now. It wasn't that I was just moving the brush in that particular area on Lee it on. Lee applied it to the area that was selected Not gonna show you how to do this again. There's four squares here, folks. This is why we practiced this way. Grab your selection tool. Make sure you're in automatic mode and tap on the red Now you see how the red just went Blue tap on the brush The red is now selected So if I come over here and I draw on the red in blue And I put us star down here Now watch I'm gonna take my pen and I'm gonna go off red and you'll see it doesn't mark it Only marks on the red Okay, And then when you're done, de select. Now let's do something that actually matters, Right, Let's grab the selection brush again. The selection tool I should say Appear the left. Make sure automatic selection is on tap the yellow See how that one went blue this time Tap the brush And now you see the marching ants kind of that gray moving type of mask What I'm gonna ask you to do now, we're gonna change this up a bit. I'm gonna have you grab your airbrush I'm gonna have you grab your soft airbrush it comes default with procreate and I'm gonna have you grab kind of some orange Doesn't matter which or in just a little bit of orange. And now I'm gonna have you drop the opacity down, See where my sliders going down right there. And now get a good fade going to kind of give it around. Look here, See? Kind of amusing this brush here. This is exactly how you shade a lot of your stuff. I want to get that down a little further. Here. This gives you a lot of practice, folks shading to get good, smooth gradations. This is exactly how you use selection, by the way. All right, Now, let's go ahead and crank this down a little bit more. Make sure brushes still selected. And let's make it kind of just do a little bit of brown in the corners. And because you have the selection to Alon, No problem. All right, so once you good with that tap off the selection tool. Now you see that the blue area here, the Thai lighted with an arrow is unchecked. So let's do this one more time. Selection tool automatic selection Tap on the blue and you see how it just turned a different color Yellow. Now, when you tap on your blue brush see, everything is selected but the blue now I can go through and I could do the same thing I'm gonna grab my soft airbrushing my black, and I'm going to go ahead and just give this a little shade here. This is exactly how you soft shade things in procreate. A lot of the time, I'm using nothing more than my airbrush. All right, And then when you're done, click off. All right, so that's the first step. Now, let's do one more here. You're going to replicate this again. You're gonna grab from your brush set. You're going to grab the painting brush, you're gonna grab your round brush, and you're gonna grab your black again another box. But this time, let's just do it in four. Or let's just do it in two right? Two sides. All right, now pick two colors. Let's go red Click and drag and let's go blue right as well. Click and drag. All right. Perfect. Now I'm gonna show you all about this whole bottom of the bottom of the toolbar thing. So we're gonna hit our selection tool. I'm to keep the automatic selected, and I'm gonna select. Now you see that the blue went to yellow just so in case just in case you missed it, show it to you again. Selection Tool, Automatic tap on the blue. And now it's selected. All right, Now you see, this is where we went before, but I'm going to show you something new, so stay with me. Selection Tool, Automatic tap on the blue sea. I'm having you do this three times. Now look at the menu down below. This is critical. You see this thing that looks like two lines what that is that is going to make the selection a new layer. So if you click on that, let's go ahead and do that. What just happened? Let's look at our layers panel. There is the new layer from the selection. Now watch what happens. I now have a completely different layer that I can tow lead if I want. That's why I had to teach you about layers before we went to selection. So let's do this again. Select automatic blue. Now, you know what this does? Take a look at these two arrows here. This is what is called the invert. Now, when you invert what's happening, So let's go ahead and invert the selection. You know how the blue went to yellow. Let's go ahead and inverted. And now it's selected everything that was not blue. So let's do this. I'm gonna go ahead and hit my brush. Look at what area has the marching ants. Now It's just the blue, which means if I go into my green, I can color on everywhere but watch when I crossed the blue, Nothing in the blue. So when you select coming up here, you select your blue and you invert the selection. Now that's what inverting does. Now let's check out the X. This is just going to de select. All right, No selection. So then I rechecked my blue. And now, if I wanted to undo redo, undo, redo. Now let's say here that I make a selection and let's say that I want to add to it. Maybe I want to add read, Watch what happens with this red Ah, I can add to the selection. So now if I grab my brush, guess what. Now I've got both of these, and if I go green again, notice that I can draw over both the red and the blue. All right. That's a little bit on the basics of selection folks. Selection is very very touchy. It's not perfect and you'll see as you go through your art procreate. This is not a strong point. Later into the class, we're gonna show you how to do a free hand selection. But this is a little bit about automatic selection. Alright, folks, let's go ahead and get into the next lesson and take the next steps. 14. Alpha Masking: all right, folks. So let's have a talk about this thing called an Alfa Channel. Now an Alfa Channel is a term used in a lot of digital art. So the question is, what is an Alfa Channel? So the simple answer is an Alfa Channel is like a transparent channel. It's anywhere that the pixel does not have information. So using our workspace here, let's go ahead and start with a red layer. So let's go ahead and make the hue red. We learned about the hue from our color lesson, right? And let's go ahead, select the brush and let's choose our round brush for painting. All right, we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna turn the brush size up. So we're using a lot of the techniques that you already know and create a red square. Now, let's practice after you got the outline. Let's bring the red into the square. Perfect. Now you see that in the Red Square, the pixels have information. Now let's go up to the layer and let's tap on the Red Square. That gray icon. We covered this a little bit earlier, that there's a menu here in the layers lesson but I want you to tap on the Alfa Lock Lair. All right, Now you see the checkered space that arrives outside of the rent. What that saying is it's going to Onley. Select the things on that layer, and Onley allow you to draw into that layer. So let's take a look at this in action. Let's go to our round brush. Let's go ahead and choose a green color and let's just mark. And now don't just drawing the red try to draw over into the white into the Alfa Channel. You'll see that it won't let you because the Alfa Channel is protected. Okay, now we're gonna practice what we learn here. Click on layers, swipe over to the left and clear the channel. Clear the layer. No, with a round brush selected. Let's use our green Phil, and we go ahead, create a green square. And now how do you use this? An actual reality, because we're about to put together a project here later that will use all of these techniques. Go over your brush. Select your airbrush, select your soft airbrush. Let's change the darkness of the color to a dark green, and now Let's go ahead and crank up the size of the brush and crank down the opacity. The brush. Now watch what happens. You see, without off lock. This is without the Alfa lock. And now let's lock the Alfa. Okay? You see how the background went to that checkered? Now what's happening? Look at that. We're now able to shade this green square using our soft airbrush, and were able to get kind of a nice gradation because we're able to go off the square a little bit. This is the power of Alfa Lock folks. Alfa Lock is a nice way that allows you to get some really smooth shading to an area while not drawing on anything you don't want to draw. All right, so that's how to get to it. That's how you know that you've locked the Alfa Lair and that's what the Alfa is is the layer in which the pixels have no data. Now I can prove that I'm just going to show you this. You don't have to do this with me. You come over here, we go to the red, grab our brush, and now you see the black area right here where we went outside the green. Watch what happens. I'm coloring outside the black and you see nothing happening. But look at what happens when I start going inside of the black. Because those pixels have a color, you see how it's beginning to turn a certain shade of read. So that's a little bit on out flock, and you see it even applying over to those pixels that don't actually have much other than the black. All right, folks, that's a little on Al Flock. We'll see in the next lesson. 15. Cut Copy and Paste Functions: All right, gang, welcome back to procreate. So this is gonna be a really short one, right? Because really, there was nowhere else to put it. It's a fundamental skills, so we got to talk about it. But it's probably only gonna be about three minutes. So let's go ahead here and let's go ahead and I'm gonna go and delete that. Clear that rename that. We'll call it practice. Okay, so I want to tell you about cutting and pasting. So let's go ahead here and let's with a color selected and a brush selected really doesn't matter what it is. Let's go ahead and make the blue diamond right? We've been working with that for a while, All right, We make a simple blue diamond now, cutting and pasting is a little bit hidden and procreate. It's not perfectly clean. You want to go ahead and hit your wrench, and then when you come down the image, there's the cut. Copy. Copy the canvas or paste so you can take this layer and you can cut it and then you can paste it. Okay, now, if you wanted to copy the layer and then you could paste it Now, let's go up to our layers panel. You see, we have two of them. Now. If I grab my selection tool, I actually have to. That's the difference between cut and copy. Now, if I go ahead and I copied the canvas, and then I come over and I paste it. Now, I have a complete copy off the canvas underneath, so it's a little bit different in terms of copy, cut paste and copy canvas. So you find all of those options underneath this image, which is underneath the wrench tab. Okay. For actions. So the last way that I'm gonna show you you can skip to the gestures tab to see this in action. But if you take your three fingers and you swipe down, you'll see that the cut. Copy. Copy. All paste. This menu comes up so we can copy all and we can paste. And now what just happened? We just pasted a copy of that whole canvas. All right, so I think we're actually shorter than four minutes, actually, were actually a 2.5. So I just wanted to show you in the menu where the copy cut, copy, canvas and paste menus are in procreate. All right, folks, that was a short one. Let's go ahead and get down to something that maybe is a little more interesting. 16. Working with Gestures: All right, folks, And welcome back to procreate. So I've got the lights down really low on this video because I want you to be able to see the gestures. And by the way, this lesson is all about gestures. Now, thus far, we've been using the apple pencil to create. But one of the things that makes the iPad and procreate more organic, as opposed to say, Ah, affinity designer is the ability to use gestures. So we're gonna use the apple pencil. I'm gonna create a square using my technical pen and a black color, right. Then I'm gonna flood feel this thing. And now I'm putting the pencil down. All right. Now with gestures, if you grab the transform, you can shrink. You can expand just like you would normally do. You can move around, of course. But now, if we're not transforming an object, let's say I take that transform off. I take my two fingers, I can shrink, and I can rotate the canvas. This is extremely important for lettering. Let me show you how this works, right? You want to line and letter the way that your hand works, so especially with things like this studio pen. If you're working through and you're working with Studio Pin right and you're trying to pull a line, pulling a line this way is a little bit harder. So if I've got a design in which I want to pull a line that way, I can take the canvas and Aiken rotate it until the way that I pull a line is very, very similar to how I would work in real life. So that's how you rotate your canvas. That's how you shrink your canvas, and that's how you expand your canvas. Okay, now let's say you get your canvas super duper small right, and you want to bring it back full size. Bring it back until it's very small. Pinch it until it should theoretically go to nonexistence, and then it comes back to full screen. Okay, so that is how you rotate your canvas and how you change the size of a canvas using gestures. Now you see, here I put a lot of different marks on the page. Let's say I don't want those. Here's how you one do. You take your two fingers tap on the screen and you see this one over here just disappeared . If I want that back, I take three fingers on a tap on the screen, read you two fingers, undo three fingers Redux 23 So that's how you do. You see. It's even a little bit touchy there between two and three fingers. No pun intended on the touchy comment, so it's not perfect. But I'll tell you, if you're working through procreate and you do something you don't like, the ability to just tap on the screen and undo it is crucial. Now let me show you how you do what's called a rapid undo. It's the same as an undue You take your two fingers, but you hold it to the canvas, see what that did there. Now let's say I want to bring it all back. You do a rapid redo. You tap and hold with three fingers, and then they're all back. So that's how you do a rapid undo and how you do a rapid redux. All right, so you know how to rotate your canvas. You know how to resize your canvas. You know how to undo You know how to redo. Let me show you the last gesture that you're really gonna need to get the job done here, take your three fingers and swiped them down. There's your cut, copy and paste menu. So if I copy and then paste, look what I just got. Now if we go back to our layers tab, we've got a completely new layer that's been inserted because of the cut copy pastes. And if I don't like this menu, swiped down, cut that particular layer out and then we're back to just regular old drawing. So again there's the gesture. Now make sure that you don't have anything selected. If you're using your selection tool, you're not gonna be able to adjust your canvas size. So that's a little bit on gestures how you can use them when we get into the next frame of our class, where we're actually putting together a project which will require a lining layer, you're gonna want to know this part. All right, folks, that's a little bit on gestures and procreate. Let's go ahead and make our canvas full size again. We shrink it and grab it and pinch it until it goes full size. All right, have a good one will see the next lessons 17. Bowling Ball Project: All right, so let's go ahead and get started here. We're gonna go ahead, and we're going to select our brush. Now. One of the questions I get asked most frequently is, Jeremy, how do you make completely round circle and procreate? And the short answer is, Go to your airbrush, go to your heart, brush and creek, that bad boy all the way up. All right, Now we're gonna make a bowling ball. We're gonna go ahead, and we're gonna make a green bowling ball. So we're coming over to the hue of green, and I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna pick kind of a middle of the road green. Okay? Come over with my brush. Make sure my heart brush selected, make sure my size and opacity or all the way up. And now I'm just gonna tap in the middle of the screen. All right? That's not a perfectly round ball. There we go. All right. Perfect. Now we're gonna go ahead and we're going to expand this. So we go to transform. I'm grabbing the corner so that I keep it right and tight, and then I'm gonna bring it front and center, All right? perfect. I uninsulated. All right, Good deal. Now, how do we keep it from drifting? And how do we keep us from drawing in the background? We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna turn on Alfa Lock. So I've Alfa locked in and I've created my circle and I'm gonna name it Base color. See, my layer is named. All right, good deal. So now what? I'm gonna dio I'm gonna come over here and I'm gonna drop down the black a little bit. You see, I'm kind of going with a little bit darker green. I'm gonna come up to my soft airbrush crank my size up will keep my opacity down in the middle here and now we're just gonna sheet it like a sphere And you see, because my opacity is down quite a bit, I'm able to get a really nice soft gradation without making it to overpower chain drop down my size just a little bit, okay? And now I'm coming back one more time, and I'm gonna go even a little darker. Still making sure my software brushes still selected. And I'm just gonna add a little bit more roundness to this bad boy just like that. Now, remember, folks procreate will not make you a much better artist. It is simply a tool. So if you don't know how to shada basic severe, that might be something you're gonna wanna learn. Okay, Now, that being said is an artist you don't get paid to just copy, right? You want to give your own interpretation of stuff, So we've got a basic sphere. We know that the light is coming from that direction. Now, let's go ahead and let's add a layer. Now, I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna keep my darker green I'm gonna turn on my hard brush And now I'm gonna shrink it down just a little bit and a pop one of these into existence. All right. Now, with my transform tool selected, I'm gonna come over here and I'm going Teoh Just that. And now how do I rotated, folks? Okay, so I'm rotating my selection around. And really, what I'm doing here is I'm creating some thumb holes. All right? I think that one looks pretty good. So now how do we copy a layer duplicate? Now I select that layer and let's go ahead and position that layer right about here and now . Good names make good structures, right? Let's call this more finger. What's called this upper finger? Okay, the first step of any procreate in any digital art folks is getting this thing right. All right, now, we don't want that believe. And let's go ahead and duplicate the lower finger one more time. And let's call this the thumb because a bowling ball right has three holes in it. We're going to select the thumb, and now we're going to move it just slightly out a little bit more. And we're going to change the perspective up just a little bit on that thumb there. All right, let's take a look at how that looks, um, kind of happy with it. Go ahead and just crank that down just a little bit more there. All right, we want to get the perspective right. I think that's a much better perspective on it. Let's go ahead and adjust this lower finger. Just a skosh. That's right. That's technical term, folks of Scotia. It's just a little bit different than a smidge. All right, let's go ahead and shrink that down and undo that. All right, Let's see, we got there. All right. Now, the very next thing we're gonna dio is we're gonna Alfa lock each one of these. Notice how we're using the same technique. Just over and over. Alfa lock for solid areas is awesome. Now, we're gonna bring this down a little bit. We're gonna bring it in dark, and we're gonna use our basic gestures now to zoom in on this ball. Now we're gonna start the lower finger, going to keep the A, pass it down, and I'm going to select my soft airbrush and a drop the size of that bad boy Don't want quite there. All right? You see how we're beginning to get some dark here? We want to get the shadow into that little hole there. Looks good. Let's go ahead and do the upper same exact technique. All right? And let's go ahead and do the thumb. All right? You got a deal. Now let's go ahead and move into kind of a lighter area. Let's go ahead and make it a little lighter right about there. I think it's pretty good we're still under thumb. Where and now we're gonna go ahead and drop that even down further, and we're just gonna lightly put pencil that in. Okay. And now we go over here to the lower finger, and we're just gonna pencil that in, and then we come over here to the guess. Which one, folks? The upper finger. That's right. Rocket science. Okay, Now, if that looks a little bit strong, you can always take your blender. Go to your smudge tool, grab your soft airbrush, and you can smudge it in a little bit. We're gonna go ahead and drop down that capacity a little bit, and you can take some of those hard lines away there. Okay, I'm gonna go to lower finger, do the same sort of thing, And you see how I'm kind of cutting some of the outside in with that? All right. Good deal. Using my gesture, bringing it back to here. All right, Now, let's go ahead and add a little bit of ah, highlight to it. So I'm gonna make sure Got my base color selected again, coming over here to kind of a almost white. I tend not to use bright white or solid black a lot, because in life, a lot of times things are not bright white or solid black. So I'm gonna go ahead and crank up my brush a little bit again Double checking, making term on the base color. And now I'm just gonna add a little bit of highlight down along this side Here. Now see how it's taking me forever and a day to get there. I'm gonna go ahead and turn up the opacity a little, and now we're getting there a little bit quicker capacity down a little bit, crank up the size of just a little bit and just do a little bit of highlight right through there. All right, perfect working through it. So we're almost done with this thing now. Now what I'd like to do is let's go ahead and add just a little bit of shadow because the light is striking from this direction, which I think is going to bring in some shadows. Let's go ahead and drop down a little bit of shadow here, Drop this thing down just a little bit. I'm gonna zoom on in here, crank the opacity a little bit. A little bit of a subtle raised area there, just on a lip of that ball. All right, Now, this is one of the reasons we have layers. Let's go ahead and had a little bit of lightness to it. We're gonna use the same settings on the airbrush And you see how in half in the circle in half out of the circle put a little, a little bit of a raise top on it. Now, if you didn't have these layers, folks would be super obvious. We wouldn't be able to get this nice gradation. All right, folks. And that's a pretty good finish. Bowling ball. Now for bonus points, which could do, if you really wanted to, you could absolutely adul air move it to the top of the stack. And then you could go through an ad in some crazy textures you could add in some of the abstracts we can add in some marble texture. Maybe do something with a, uh, maybe a lighter. Let's do something in kind of a yellowish drop the capacity down a little bit and now we're gonna Alfa lock. But Alfa Lock won't really do anything, so we're just going to go through okay, now do you see how we've got it? over top of those some holes. Let's drop it down below the thumb holes and problem solve problem goes away. That's the beauty of digital art. All right, now where? We've got a little bit of over spray, we go to the eraser and we just erase out and clean it up a little bit. All right, folks, that's a little bit on the bowling ball. I'd like to see what you did. You don't even have to do green. Maybe you've done pink. Maybe you've done purple. Something like that. Hit me up, let me know what you got there. And then that will move on to the next lesson.
