About This Class

An essay is a piece of writing (usually short) that gives the author's own point of view on a topic that has become a major part of a formal education in the form of free response questions. Secondary and college are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and essays are used to judge the mastery and comprehension of course material. Students are asked to explain, comment on, or assess a topic of study in the form of an essay. As well, many colleges use essays as a means to select applicants for admission.

The narrative essay is one type of essay-writing in which the writer employs narration or a story to make a point, explain an experience, or persuade the reader.

In this course, we will be exploring the narrative essay, learn and understand what it is, and develop our skill in writing it. We will examine a couple of actual examples of the narrative form of essay to see how professional writers have employed the form. And as a final project, we will create our own narrative essay.

This class coincides with other essay-writing courses in a series on the essay created by Dr. McIntyre.

Teacher

My name is Michael McIntyre. I taught at the college level for about 30 years, mostly writing- and literature related courses: literature, film, and also “freshman” composition, advanced composition and research, creative writing, and professional writing. I have also taught more generalist humanities courses such as art history, music appreciation, media studies, and study-skills courses. One of my favorite courses to teach is mythology.

I hold a Doctorate at the University of Southern California, a Master’s Degree from California State University at San Francisco, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In a “previous lifetime” (or so it seems), I spent some years banging my head against the walls o... See full profile

1. Introduction to the Narrative Essay: Hello, I'm Dr. Michael McIntyre and I've been teaching, writing literature and other English E-type things at the college level for more than 20 years. And in this course, we're going to learn about the narrative essay. First, we will look at what we mean by SA, what is the strange beast of which we speak? We're going to learn that. And then in particular, we're going to look at the narrative essay, which is a little bit different from other forms of essays. But through this, you'll learn about the essay format, the essay structure. And you'll be able to expand from that to other essay forms and also other forms of writing. And perhaps that's the most important part of what we're going to learn in this course. This class is created for anyone who wants to learn how to write the essay, or anyone who wants to learn writing in general, because the essay format is basic, it is fundamental to almost all forms of writing. Whether you want to write an essay, or a book, or a poem, or a presentation, or a business proposition. Or you want to put together an application to get into a school or acquire a job. This form of writing is fundamental. Learn this and you'll be able to write almost anything in this course. What we're gonna do is you're going to strip away the mystery. At the end of this course, you'll write a narrative essay for yourself. You will have acquired the skill to create this most basic and universal form of communication. So let's get writing with Professor Mack.
