Join digital illustrator Dora Domjan @bydoradomjan for an easy-to-follow, beginner-friendly 28-minute class on making a texturized digital illustration in Procreate from sketch to finished artwork and learn the fundamentals of creating stunning art in Procreate. This is a step-by-step digital drawing tutorial so you can easily follow along even as a beginner.

Would you like to get help in what to draw, how to sketch, and then how to get from line work to colored artwork and then to texturized eye candy? Then join me on this short, easy-to-follow but fun journey and create engaging artworks even as a beginner!

What is the class about?

In this 30 minutes or so we’re going to create an eye-catching illustration in Procreate from ground-up starting with some ideation, inspiration.

Then when we found the answer for the: what to draw? question, we’re going to create a quick sketch, just to have a base idea about the desired outcome. You can either do this in the traditional way by using a pencil and paper, or it's also an option to do the sketching process right away in Procreate.

After sketching, we’re making a final linework of the illustration.

Then from the 3 free Color Palettes provided by @bydoradomjan we're choosing the right colors for our artwork and start to do the fun part: color blocking and drawing our flat style illustration in Procreate. As a final step, we're adding the magical elements, grains and textures ;).

Who is the class for?

This class is for anyone interested in making cute postcards, artworks to post on social, or just need a little fun project to diverse their creative portfolios. However this is a beginner-friendly class, some basic knowledge on how to use the app Procreate is a plus. I will explain every step I take, you can follow along and create the exact same illustration like me, or you can choose your own subject.

Why is the class useful?

Making digital illustrations became a very popular hobby in the last years and there are sooo many possibilities in creating great artwork. I would like to show you one way to personalize your artworks / style in order to stand out. In my opinion these small tasks, where you can try out new techniques can add so much to your personal digital illustration style and helps you diversificate your artwork.

This class can be beneficial for anyone looking for some new techniques, or beginners / hobby artists who would like to learn more about Procreate’s possibilities or even pros who are interested in other digital  illustrators techniques, tips.

Materials/Resources

I build this class around using Procreate on an Ipad, be aware that any other graphic tablet and raster based drawing software is also good for this project. I even start the sketching phase on paper with pencil (I’m a person addicted to stationery), so feel free to follow along on any media you like to use. The things I recommend you to have: iPad, Apple Pencil, Internet connection.

I will explain everything I do and we’re building up the class project step-by step from start to finish together, so beginners can also have fun creating with us.

If you would like to dive deeper into how to use Procreate or how to do vector based illustrations I recommend you to check out all the amazing classes about these topics on Skillshare.

1. Intro: Hi and welcome. My name is Donna domain. Today I'm going to show you how to spark up your illustrations with a little texture. Why I think this makes it goes last topic. Because what I see nowadays on social media that artworks that gets the most likes are the ones with textures. The reason lies in me, because recently I switched from creating logos, vector artworks, and flex style illustrations from more textured ones. This is a totally beginner friendly class. I'm going to explain everything what I do in Procreate, so no worries. You can follow along and immediately do something great. As an immediate gift, I offer you free brushes that I created for this class. And I'm also going to give you three color palettes that you can choose from. Why do it from scratch? Because trust me, I know from experience that the hardest thing is to start a project. Some people adopting that drawing abilities and aiming for the perfect sketch at the beginning. But trust me, it is just a sketch. And what is perfect anyway? So please try to make yourself comfortable here. We're not aiming for the illustrations Oscars. If there's no pressure, no judgment, just you need are getting and the flow that fixes a way to create something visually pleasing. If you're interested in other aspects that make please head over to Skillshare and he does follow button on my profile page. You can see my previously created class flips by character illustration. You can also have a sneak peek into projects that I create for other Skillshare teachers classes. I will update you regularly on what projects I'm working on currently. You can even engage with me on Instagram, but I not only share my artworks, but bits and pieces of my daily life as well. Don't forget that I'm not only here to share a process with you, I'm also really excited about what you create during this class. So please don't forget to upload it to your project gallery. I'm also willing to share them on my Instagram profile to give a shout out to all of the grid student projects. I love to see all the diverse artworks because I can still always learn from you as well. If you ever need help along the way or encouragement or just to say hi to everyone doing the same assignment, please feel free to reach out in the class discussion section. I'm happy to react on them as soon as possible. So to wrap it up, Let's dive into creation and let the flow take us away. 2. Class Project & Supplies: During this class, we're going to make a texturize the illustration with easy to create shapes and simple texture effects. The end result you create can be uploaded to your social media account as a new project. Or you can make a cute card or will add from it to give it to a friend or a relative as a gift. Now let's see what supplies do we need, but the initial sketch, but you can also use an A4 paper and pencil. I'm going to use my 2019 Apple iPad. A first-generation about stylus and the app Procreate installed on it. Let's see what we are going to cover. First, we gather inspiration for the illustration idea and we make a basic sketch. In the second round, we choose and upload a color palette and color our illustration. In the third round, I'm going to explain my three favorite ways to apply texture, and we're adding the magical elements to our flat colored illustration. Now go ahead and grab your gears and see you in the first lesson, ideation and sketching. 3. Ideation and Sketching: Here we are at the inspiration phase. I decided to make a Pinterest board with all the inspiration of pictures. I recommend you to use. Of course, you can search for your own motivation of pictures. But if you don't have the time or you would like to follow along, then just please go to my profile. My profile name is by Dora domain, and here I have a table called learn by doing magical illustrations in Procreate. I gathered a lot of pictures to get an overall idea of the moon, the shape of it, the light it has, and the overall texture that surrounds it. So try to find ideas for your class project. You can do the same exact drawing like me, or you can have your own ideas based on inspiration or pictures or just your thoughts. There are a lot of ways to do a sketch, but for me the easiest is to use geometrical shapes as a base. If you're a more traditional stationary lover like me, you can use an HB pencil with an eraser to draw with. For example, in this session, I start sketching with a circle. I measure four points on the paper. This makes it easier to draw a whole and even circle. If you're making mistakes, don't worry, just use the erase and redraw the sketch unlimited times if needed. But don't be too picky with your lines because you're losing valuable time and motivation if you're trying to make it perfect right way during sketching. Once you have this circle, you can easily form the shape of the moon. Now, it's time to draw the embellishments and the botanical elements. Okay. After the accessories, I decided not to draw a sleeping anywhere on the moon. Instead, I chose to draw stars around because for a basic illustration process like this, it makes easier to redraw and have success with it. Now it's time to make a photo with your iPad or your phone in order to import the hand-drawn sketch into procreate later on, I would like to summarize, what do we have after this first lesson? We have a table full of inspirational pictures on Pinterest. We have a basic sketch which we did either on an A4 paper or in the iPad. We also have a photo of the basic sketch which we are going to import later on. Or someone has already a procreate canvas and layer, read the basic sketch. I think we have everything to move on to simple coloring. 4. Coloring: Quick question, who likes colors here? Mee, Mee, Mee. I recently found out that however, I really like pastel colors and I look up to people who can have their everything in pastels. I'm more color love ago. When it comes to illustrations, color can communicate so much color, define style. It's a powerful communication tool. It can affect moods, invoke emotions, convey messages, or signal actions. It is known to have psychological and physiological effects on everyone. It equalizes the visual message delivering an instant impression that is most of a universally understood. You can find a lot of studies online. What is the meaning of each color and how can they affect the meaning of an art piece, object or an illustration in our case. So please type into Google color theory and you will get a lot of results on that topic. I usually choose my color palettes inspired by nature. In my previous class, I have a whole lesson on color hunting and how can you create your own color palette in procreate? If you want to learn the exact steps, please head over to my play with circus glass and look for the video lesson color hunt. For now, I give you my favorite three color palettes as a gift for taking this class, which you can immediately use for this or any other illustrations you create a give it to you as a gift. So it's my pleasure If you can use it further for your projects. Your web browser head over to the discussion stamp, he download on the color palette freebie. And after downloading them with only a double-click on the file system immediately imports it to Procreate. Please go ahead and open your procreate app here you can find all the previous artworks you have. But now we're opening a screen size canvas. Because every iPad differs. I think it's the easiest to go for. These, open the extra step, and try to insert a photo about your previous hand-drawn sketch. Or if you already drew in the iPad, then you just need to open the sketch layer. You can resize the picture with two fingers. Open the Layer tab, take down the opacity of the sketch layer and make a new layer above it. And then grab it and take it down. This way. You can also see your sketch while drawing your outline. For continuous and clear editing, please rename your layers because it's easier to modify something. If you know where to find it. You can find several built-in brushes in Procreate. Now I'm going for the six B pencil, but you can also use the HB pencil or whatever you like. For sketching purposes. I always use the six B pencil. So when we start to draw and tap two fingers on the screen, procreate automatically create an even circle. Let's try this method to draw our half-moon. If you would like to erase something, just double-tap on the screen and it will automatically erase. The last thing you drew. For the eraser, you can use the exact same brushes that you can use for drawing. If you would like to erase a big part of the picture, it's better to use a bigger brush. For the color blocking part, you can use a built-in Procreate brush or the brush I provided you in the projects and resources section for free. So you can import it the same way, like we imported the color palette, double-tap on the downloaded brush set and that it will automatically imports. It's up to procreate. We did brush and with the color palette you choose, you need to just start to draw again on the outline version of your moon. But this time you also need to fill the shapes. There are two options to fill the shapes. I will show you. One is when you just simply grab the color and drop it on the shape you would like to fail. There's also another version of coloring. When you're just simply drawing over your shape. This way you can prevent the brushes texture. So I really like this version because this way you can already add some magic in the illustration. Now, move down this layer in order to see the sketch. And we can do the same with the botanical elements and the embellishments. You can rotate your canvas with your two fingers anytime you wish. Because sometimes it's easier to draw some stuff if you just rotate it. It depends on how you're usually drawing stuff on paper as well. After that, I also start to draw the stars. But this time I'm only drawing simple lines. And I will show you how they are going to turn into bright, shining stars. Tap on the canvas and move your pencil to the right. This way, the stars are going to be shining stars. Finally, we're adding the magical elements, grains to move away from flat illustrations and textures to make your illustration as unique as you need it to be. 5. Texture Magic: I have three favorite ways to apply a texture. Of course there's a lot more, but now I'll choose this tree. First. You can use a grainy brush to make some shadows. We're going to do that immediately. Secondly, you can use a texture brush and apply it on a layer directly. This is what we're going to use on the moon. And the third option here is to use a textural element will layer with the help of our clipping mask and blending modes. This is something that we're going to discuss in a future class, but we're still going to use this. Let's dive into it. So if it comes to shadows, I usually use a built-in brush in the organic section. The name is Clay. I like this brush really much because it has texture that can be easily used for displaying shadows and it can give you a bit of depth to our illustration. Let's see what I mean. So please use this clay brush and then choose a size around five per cent. Maybe. What I'm gonna do now is I choose the color, which is going to give my green. But I use previously this orange as the moon base color. I'm not going to use a darker orange. Instead, I'm moving away from the orange towards the red and the y lat. And they tried to choose a darker, reddish while latish got maybe a bit more red, something like this. Then I'm going to use this as my ingraining color. I learned this from the art mother. She's also a Skillshare teacher, so please check her classes out. She's really amazing. And I really loved her classes too. Before we make any brushstrokes, please check if you're on the right layer. Yes, I'm on the right layer because I would like to do some shading on the moon. But, but if we would like to make brushstrokes only on the moon and not on the leaves and the background. We need to make sure that we turn on Alpha lock. This way, you can see that under the Moon there's a checkerboard background. We cannot draw on that checkerboard. We can only draw on the moon then that's quite handy for us now. So I choose the clay brush and start shading really gently. I just need some Plus colors to make this a bit more interesting. Really gently. If the light source is coming from the upper right corner than this color, is going to get a bit more lighter. So I choose a lighter version of it. Again. Make some scribbles with that. And then I also choose a yellowish color to just make sure that you can see where the light is coming from. Now, this is not the final result. What I'm aiming for. I also need to make it a bit more texture. So what I'm gonna do here is that I go to the Smudge Tool and then with the smudge tool, you can choose the same brushes that you have originally built in as a normal brush. So now what I'm going to do is I go to this section and choose the burn tree. I really liked this one because it has a nice spotty texture. Then we start smudging, but we're not going to just tap and hold and then smudge because that's going to just mix up all the colors. We're just doing small steps. Please step on the colors. This way. It can mix them really, really gently. And with a little texture. Cool. Let's see the result. Please turn off the sketch layer down. This looks really nice. I think. Even if you look it from a bit zoomed out version, if you see any thing that might be changed or you need more of this brush, then please just correct it like this. Yeah, I think that's much better. Night looks really cohesive. So we have shadows and we have light. And this makes it a bit more two-dimensional or three-dimensional because that's not the goal here, but to cool, the next thing we need to do is to bid to add a bit more texture to these leaves. I really like this part. Now we're not going to add the texture with the Alpha lock tool. Instead, we're going to make a new layer, rename it this texture. Then I turn on the clipping mask. If you are drawing something with clipping mask, for example, I choose this bamboo now, it doesn't really matter. I do some scribbles. You can see it's only, it only affects the leaves because clipping mask is turned off. But if I turn it off, turn it off, then all the scribbles. You cannot do this with the ethyl because if I turn on Alpha lock, you don't see the previous things that we do. I clear it. Then what we're going to do. I really like this yellow, what we used on the list, but we already have a nice green as a texture colors. I go for the Hartz brush from the artistic session. You can try it out immediately in the brush library if it fits your needs without any effect of the original artwork. Lower the size of the brush a bit, and start typing, believes. In procreate. We can use blending modes to make that to our texture. I'm not going into details about blending modes, maybe in another class. So for now please choose the screen mode and take the opacity down a bit until it feels right. I create a new layer above it and repeat the process with different texture brush. It really depends on you how many brushes you use. There is no golden rule here. For the facial expression. I choose a normal brush, the dry ink. From the inking brushes. Please check if you're on the right layer and choose a color for drawing. You did it. How do you like it? 6. Conclusions: It's time to reflect on the process we just finished. The first thing you need to remember is that, don't worry, you can do it. Because practice makes perfect. If you do this process to three times with different artworks, you can really strengthen your core texture muscles. So please try over and over again, no matter the time you need to spend on an artwork, believe me, it's going to get better in time. Don't be afraid to experience. You can always undo a step in digital illustration. And remember, there is no such thing as perfect sketch. Sketch is there for a reason. It doesn't need to be perfect. Now, we're at the end of this class. I'm really happy that I could share this process with you. And thank you very much for your attention. Please don't forget to share your artworks in the project gallery, upload your final artwork and even the sketch because I think it's important to appreciate the journey, not just the result.
