Super Vision: Intro to Eyewear Design

1. Trailer: From Coco Breezy Eyewear, we the founders and designers. We're teaching the class supervision into the eyewear design. So, pretty much we'll be showing you the basics of how to start a sketch and how you get inspiration when designing sunglasses, or regular eyewear. Coco and I will personally review all your design and choose a our favorite one. The winner has a chance to actually see their sketch come into reality, you may have a chance to have a Coco and Breezy collaboration. So make sure you submit there are super plus of keys of other outcomes from all the aassignments that you have done. Hopefully we get inspired from you guys' designs and inspirations. 2. Research and Moodboard: I'm Coco and I'm Breezy. This is Unit One, Research and Moodboard. Creating a Moodboard is very important because it gives you kind of the direction of where you want to go. Sorry, I have something in my throat. I'm all good. I have like a little itch. I'm not choking. I had something in my throat. Okay. So creating. Go. Creating a Moodboard is extremely important because it kind of gives you a direction and it kind of gives you an idea of what you want to create, it kind of puts into a perspective of forms of shapes and colors and just like a theme and a mood of your full collection. So today, you guys will be creating a Moodboard yourself and this will help you come up with the theme or the color, you can get like the shape of your temple on the sunglasses. You can see and feel how you want your campaign to be. It's always great to have a visual inspiration. The thing that you need for this, you can use magazines then cut them out. You could also research the Internet and look at different trends or like fashion websites Or forecast. You could also go outside and take pictures. You don't necessarily only have to be inspired by fashion things. For like for example, we get inspired by architectural shapes and or even animals. So just creating something that's visually interesting, take a picture of it or grab that picture from the internet then you can print it out. You can do two different things. You can either create a Moodboard on a board and a piece of paper and put them just together or if you're familiar with Photoshop or Illustrator Or even PowerPoint. You can kind of piece your images on together to just create one full page of all your images together. For our inspiration, besides us actually getting cutouts from magazines, one thing that's very good is to educate yourself on the past of whatever product you're designing. So we have these books. These are books that actually show the history of like the original sunglasses from all way back in like the 20's or 2013 because I think today with product it's all about evolving. So we feel that like knowing the history of how like the materials and the functionality of eye wear that really helps us with our design style. That's how we gain our inspirations from knowing the back story of a lot different frames and lenses and materials. Also the two's as we are do-it-yourself or we burn in our own. It's great to, now we get inspiration for the shapes and the actual design of the glasses by seeing what materials are functional or seeing what way temple are attached, seeing the way that things are functional. So, they also inspire us. It's great to look through this. So we just kind of add tags and we write down what is it on the page that inspires us and we just go back to it and see how we can use it or just read the history to educate ourselves. Because for us it's very important where we don't get inspired by the actual design, we're inspired by functionality because for us we like to create new silhoettes glasses but like she said, we get to see in books like the colors of lenses, the different materials, the way temple is placed, basing your learning on your own. So, we have already started gathering images from our Moodboard. Right now our inspiration is actually from what we're working on the current collection is called trances and creatures. So pretty much our ideas that we want to have transparent colors, architectural shapes, and add colors because our last collection was like all black things. So now we want to add colors. So far I've found this skirt that is transparent and has like a solid line work and I think I can use this inspiration like the color way as I haven't seen this lens being this color and the frame being black. I actually also got inspired by this net because this part of the glass is called the temple and I can actually see a temple with this shape which would be awesome. So it's great because when you have a Moodboard is like you don't have to get inspired by only looking at other glasses, you get inspired by looking at something like this and this can be like a color palette. So I'm excited to research and do more, seeing more designs, more materials and more inspiration for color and shapes. And also in more shapes. So, right now looking through this magazine and I see this sofa has a really cool embellishment on it, which is right here. Which could be a cool direction for our trends in creatures, like animals have, trends in creatures pretty much like translucent, inspired by animals and textures. I kind of like this sections I'm going to cut it out and add it to my inspiration board. These images are actually inspirations of pictures that we took. These are raw images. We went to the aquarium. So I know Coco is going through magazine to get inspiration but another things is you can go to place or environment that inspires you and take images and we went to an aquarium that has like butterflies and like fish and you just want to go there so you can actually get the feeling. I mean you can go on Google and google some fish but we felt that it might actually be in the environment with the fish and butterflies we can feel their environment and taking our self. I see this butterfly right here and it reminds me of a cat eye. I would use this the tip of the wing as the cat eye pair sunglasses. See here I really love how this looks, again you get some of this inspiration in tempo, because you want to do a sunglass that, of course it depends what your market is, but we try to reached where we're not too niche but we're not very mass and we just have very creative artistic feel to our sunglasses. So if you do more of a basic frame you can always play with the temple. I think this is a really cool shape to get inspired by. So now Coco is cutting out images, I'm going to start piecing them together to create a theme. I'm going to edit out what images I really want to use and what images I want to add to the theme. So, the theme is trends in creatures like we said. Our theme is that but you can create your own theme, so where images inspire you. Sometimes you might think of a theme in the beginning but then we actually piece to your inspiration together, you might come out with whole other theme. So right here I see a beehive and these shapes are great. You can use like a shape for a frame or a lens, cozy, to add some extra texture. This is awesome. The color red is awesome just like this shapes looks kind of 3D-ish, it looks like glasses if you flip it this way. But you can really pull some inspiration by using your imaginations and seeing like different resources that you have. I think that a lot of people get too caught up with seeing fashion to get inspiration but you want to be innovative. We really try not to look at other sunglasses to get inspired by when we are designing. Love it, here's your frame, there is your temple. You might not be able to see it, but my imagination sees it. I love this idea. So, if you run by the choice of gathering images from online, you can save them inside a folder. All the images in there and put it in like she said, either like Photoshop or Illustrator or PowerPoint which is really easy or you can print those pictures out and put on an actual board. You kind of have to print it out even if you do make it on those programs and hang it up on your wall or hang it up in the environment that you're creating in. So you can wake up and you see that, you might come across an idea. I'm actually designing the sketch basing inspiration that shouldn't be a rush. It should be something that you visually look at your Moodboard and see how you feel looking at this Moodboard, mirrored it in your mind and creative system. So far we have been taking time off to do research and we started on Moodboard. We're still work in progress but this is what we came up with so far. It will take you a while, you don't want to rush it because you really want to find your different resources of your inspiration and it could take you a day or even take you a week. You don't want to limit your mind and limit your creativity. For this unit, we happen to gather our Moodboard for our inspiration, this collection and designs. So you guys will be putting together your Moodboard that will be based off your designs and collections. Now next, lead you to our next unit, which is sketch and managements. 3. Sketch and Measurements: I'm Coco. I'm Breezy, and this is unit two. Sketch and Measurements. So far, we have put together our mood board, which is our direction for our translucent creatures inspired theme. Right now, I see that I have different colors that I may be inspired by to make my design sketch and I have different materials. For instance this lamp. I did make them, used as a Middle Temple which is like the arm of a frame. I also got inspired by this butterfly which I think I'm going to prove one out of the three sketches I'm going to create a cat eye inspired by this. Then also too, I really love how this skirt is? How it's monochromatic, how it's transparent and solid. So they might play with the lens and frame with inspiration for here. So your assignment unit two is, you will create three sketches based off your mood board to make sure it looks like cohesive collection, but you'll choose one style to lay out all the measurements and make a spec for it. I do the majority of our sketches. I'm the head designer of our company and the process that I do is when I'm looking at my mood board, I kind of pick out things that might inspire me. For instance, if I want the frame, or I'll either grab the picture or like for this picture right here, I see a frame but it is a chair, so I might even like to sketch over it to visually see it before I actually add it to my sketchbook or sometimes I'll just sketch out different shapes that I see in the mood board onto my sketchbook and from the different shapes. That's when I start creating the frame or the temple or like the bridge and that's my way of doing it, but you can find a way that makes you feel more comfortable in your creative process. So I'm going to grab my sketchbook and my pencil and I'm going to start my sketches, my three sketches and we are going to be based up of my mood board. So let's see what we come up with. When do your sketch not everybody is the best artist, so as long as you get your idea out in the beginning then it's okay. Because for us we go from a sketch to illustrator and if you don't know how to use illustrator you can hire somebody else to do that outlying tech drawing. Yeah, I'm not the best sketcher but I know how to get my point across. When I create the frame. I like a thicker frame. So right now I'm sketching the inside with the lens. It's going to be. Instead of doing regular dip right here I'm going to add some like shape and then create the bridge. Right here. I'm not too happy with the sketch so I'm going to do another one. So this one right here is the front line of my version of like a basic Wayfarer. Now I'm actually about to draw the side view of the temple, the temple is the arm of the sunglasses, the frame. I want to use this lamp for inspiration for the shape of the Temple. But keep in mind, this parade here is the starting of your temple so the beginning part of your Temple has to match up to this whole thing like that properly. So right now it's raining outside and honestly this is the most time that I get my inspiration which is crazy for me actually they create a rainy day collection of sunglasses so I'm actually pretty pumped that it's raining right now. It's crazy. I get really into my zone. Usually I listen to some his and my Mozart music with the rain plain even when it's not raining I play rain sounds which is kind of weird but I suggest that you play some type of music or you put on some type of sound or just to environment that you can be really in your zone while you're sketching. For Sketching you begin to get into your zone then get into your mind to your mood board and just like sketch what's on your mind. So I'm taking a lamp as inspiration and I'm creating it into the temple or the arm of the sunglasses. It's really cool. I'm pretty excited about it. So this right here is the start of one out of three sketches that I'm doing. So I started my sketching process and you guys are going to create three sketches or if you create more sketches, choose your top three and after that choose one that you want to create measurements for. So either your measurements or callouts, just choose your one favorite statement sunglasses and the way that we get inspired for measurements like we say it was definitely a learning process. Sometimes we can look online to see like if you're creating the Wayfarer inspired or even if you create a frame that you like the size of a Wayfarer you can based off the basic or the standard sizing for that. That you know is going to actually fit the face comfortable and you can play. You can use your ruler or your digital calculator to kind of play on. To see what the sizing is to see if like you want to make it bigger or smaller than that standard size. But we will be providing you guys with a couple standard measurements for like a round frame or for like a Wayfarer style sunglasses just looking for that little reference for those who don't know. For those who are familiar with illustrator or photoshop, well I personally use Illustrator. I scan in my sketches and I upload it into illustrator. And you could do a live trace and use the pen tool to trace over your actual sketch. You can create callouts that way as well. So this is like the basic measurements on starting out, and once you actually start getting like more familiar, you can really do the start of it but if you can really like grab a pair of glasses that you really like and you can use this tool or use a ruler to see like with the end of that temple tip is. So a lot of these measurements are very standard and it's easy we can just add on a little bit or take out some to see the measurements that you want for yourself. So we have just got done with our sketches and chose our one style to do the measurements, so you guys will be submitting your three sketches with one staple style that will have the measurements on it and then you'll be ready for unit three to add the materials and colors. 4. Bonus Clip: Clay Modeling: So,a bonus thing that we do, is we have one of our team members, his name is Tito. And one thing that we've learned is like a process that you guys don't have to do. So, we just do on our own time. is we will see a sketch, and we'll actually use modeling clay to actually make the pair of glasses as a prototype, and that will help us make our measurements because you get to see the prototype first hand. Obviously, you can't wear it, but it's great because you can see how the glasses will fit, you can see the length, you can see the width, and so that can kind of reference you on creating your measurements. I'm Tito. I'm the mold designer for Coco and Breezy. I'm going to show you how we create mold designs for our collection. You grab some clay. Basically, this kind of clay is called Plastilina. You can get it at your local art store or Michael's or something like that. And first you got to kind of play with it to make sure there's no gaps. Then, you just begin rolling it. Make sure it's flat. You're going to keep doing the process until you start getting a lot of these little holes out until you get something as flat as this. After you have your flat clay, that's when you start looking at your basic design that you drew. You know right now I have a little pen that is made out of wood, it has points, and you're basically going to kind of draw your design on the clay and get your basic design. You can actually just get a basic feel out of it and once you've created your basic outline, you'll grab something. I have a stylus, you can actually create something with something that's sharp such as like a butter knife or a knife or anything like that. So, now you begin cutting. If you want straight lines is always good to use a ruler. So, you kind of make sure your lines are straight because this is one of the great things about it is that, once you have your basic lines that's when you come in and you start taking your measurements. You make sure that the measurements that you put on paper now you have here. So, now you have a basic frame. Now it's time to actually sharpen it up and make sure that your clay resembles your drawing. So, as you go along, now you start seeing the shape of it. Now, if you want to do it, you actually start putting your lenses in. So, this is where this comes in, this comes in handy. You have nine millimeters, so you look at nine millimeters. See what a nine is, you kind of dig a hole from the top of the frame to where your lens is going to start. For the bottom of the frame, they actually put three. So, you calibrate with three will look like. Same thing from the bottom of the frame. So, there you have your basic shot. So, now that we have a basic frame, we would actually go to the temples, and there's your temples. 5. Material and Color: I'm Coco. I'm Breezy. This is unit three, Materials and Colors. So, common materials that are used for sunglasses, there's acetate, which is like a plastic, and most sunglasses are made out of acetate. There's titanium, which is a type of a metal, that's very light. Also, there's stainless steel metal as well, and sometimes they add color. They used stainless steel metal and put a color coating over it like gold color or even like a color over the metal. Like electroplated. There's different light treatments that you can put over the metal, for example, you can put a rubber coating on there that gives a matte rubbery feeling to it. But the importance of choosing your material is depending on the style that you want. So, this style is either zero style. We actually mixed materials. This is a perfect example. This top part right here, which is the frame, is a clear acetate, which is a transparent acetate, and on top of it, we have a metal detail, just stainless steel, gold plated. On this side, right here is a temple tip. It is made out of acetate and I like the transparent because you see the exposed metal on the inside. It's your choice and it's rimless at the bottom. For us, for this style right here, this is also part of our current Trances in Creatures. This is something different that we haven't done, but these are actually original prints. So, once you want to get really high-tech and do acetate that no one else has or a color, these are actually a brand called, Sir New York, with a collaboration Sir New York and Color Therapy, and this is actually a painting that was made into acetate, and this is actually an original print that was made into acetate too, and no one else has this color. It's just printed on to the acetate. Last, we have our signature Rainy Day sunglasses. What we did was, we actually mixed just a transparent acetate and with a tortoise color on a temple tip. So, you can see how you can do two different material colors as well just to give it a little funk in style. The colors that we chose for our collection on the three pairs that we designed, we pooled from our mood board, and want to go with more of a transparent color, and use more brighter colors, like oranges, greens because we always for some reason, our glasses, our past collection always end up being black and gold. So, we wanted to add pops of color in it to serve for spring and also, since it was inspired by Trances in Creatures, we took colors of a different fish and a color combination. So now, I'm using one solid color, but we came and combine colors like having the front in one color and then back in another color or having the temple in different color. The temple in different color. We can really play with it. So, we added our measurements, our basic measurements for our sunglasses for away fair. This is just the basic measurements. There are more advanced measurements, really getting in there and the technical drawing of it, but this is perfect to start off with. Now, it is time to add colors. So, we're going to revisit our mood board and post some colors and the materials based on the filling that we want to do for this one pair of sunglasses. So, what I usually do is we do call-outs. You can color it as well, but what I like to do is I like to do call-outs. So, I'm going to label the frame "A", and write note, and say "Frame". Then, what I do down here is I'll actually have a key. So, you want to make a key that will have all your notes for your call-outs. So, I'll write "Key" and of course, for advance that people that use Illustrator, Photoshop, we'll show you guys that way as well, which is the proper way, but like we said, if you're not familiar, you can do it this way. So, here's my key. I usually have a swatch right here for the example, and I'll say "A", and I'll put my swatch example here, and I'll write "Color", and I think we can d. You should try, I really love this red, but then, of course, I really love black, but I don't want to do black because we want to add colors. Try something new. So, why not like a translucent orange? Okay. I see that. Or is that too bright? Or I'll also love this peach. Is this peach? Let me take my sunglasses off to see if this is really peach. I think it's tan. Well, I use orange. I like the transparent orange. So, we'll cut a little piece off and this can be for reference. Either if you do use a [inaudible] , you can start with this first, and then bring it into illustrator. I'm going to cut a piece out of this for reference. I'm going to tape it on there. I'll just say "Orange" now. Sometime it is great to find the real color codes, so you can get the exact code that you want when speaking to your manufacturer or whoever is going to make or produce your glasses because you can say orange, but there's so many tones of orange. So, you can always go online and look for Pantone Chart. They'll actually give you the exact code for the Pantone color. But for now, A is orange, that's the color. Now, for the material, solid material. Acetate. We'll use acetate. Acetate is just like the plastic. Next, we're going to call out B, which is going to be the lens, and I go either a peach lens or a black lens. What do you think, Coco? Or a mirror lens? Like a mirror lens. Like a green will train. Yes, that's intense. Let's try it. Why not yellow? So, we'll say "B". Oops, that's supposed to be lens. Redo your sketches. It's okay if it's not perfect in the beginning because you can always do a new one that is not perfect, but when it's easier to read. One thing is that when you do your first sketch, you always want to put the date and write Phase One or Sketch One because even though this is the first sketch, you're going to do probably about three other revisions. So, of course, the sketch is, the first one is not what exactly what you want usually. To start a new beginning. We'll write "Phase One" as well. To keep you organized. To keep you organized, exactly. Next, we're going to call-out the temple. Color green mirror. Let's call-out the temple next. So, the temple is like the arm. C is the newest. It's a little sloppy, but C. Like I said, it would be easy later on. Mark it "C". So, within the tempo, there's a few different details that you want to capture. Right here, you can see this right here is a metal piece. So, we'll call this "C2", "C2 Temple". So, for the temple color, I think we can do the same orange again. So, write "Color Reference Orange", "Reference Frame Color". Then, the material will be acetate. Then, for "C2", we'll call that the "Temple Detail", and that will be metal, and we'll make it gold. So, the color will be gold. Sorry. Again, your first job is not how to be the neatest. As long as you can read it, that's all that matters, in the beginning until we go to Phase Two. Next, you want to create a note under "C" to talk about the details. So, here, they'll call out, Coco? Okay, tape that. Right here? Yes. That's a cut out, which is a laser cut out. It will be cut out, so that it's see through. [inaudible] , but safe. Usually, something that helps us, right now, I'm not doing it, but something that will help you with your organization is if you knew your call-outs for your colors, you'll use black. But when you do your call-outs for your materials, you use a different colored pen or marker or a pencil. Now, we're doing detail call-out. So, we'll say, for "D", this is the cut-out. So, I'll say, "Cut-out", and this would be a laser cut-out because they have to do that later. So, "Laser Cut". These pieces right here are metal pieces. So, mark that, we call it "E". Mostly, "E". "Metal Rectangle Pieces". "Metal Rectangle Pieces". Gold, the color will be gold. This is just like I said, you get your initial first idea out. So, you just completed unit three. So far, you have finished your mood board and research. You've completed your sketch and add the measurements. You've also did your call-outs for your materials and your colors. So now, we'll actually go through all your assignments and we will choose our favorite one design for the Coco and Breezy contest. The winner will actually get their sketch made into a raw prototype pair of glasses like this. We're so excited to see all of your designs. If we loved the design so much and it fits our current collection or upcoming collections, you have a chance to actually do a collaboration with your brand times our brand, and you will get the percentage of the sales. So, make sure you submit and we're super pumped to see all the outcomes from all the assignments that you guys have done. Hopefully, we get inspired from you guys' designs and inspiration. 6.
