About This Class
For this class, I’ll assume you have basic sewing skills. I’m using a sewing machine in the videos, but you can hand sew your apron instead; it’ll just take a bit longer to finish your project.

Welcome to Studio Fu: Sew Your Own Denim Apron.
Studio Fu is my take on Kung Fu, which literally means “time spent at skilful work.” Studio Fu classes are short, and will help you make the most of your time, tools, and techniques as an artist.
Today’s class is about taking old jeans and reworking them into a simple and effective studio apron. I’ve been making and using this style of apron in my own studio for years, and they’re also great for kids to wear too.
Check the Project area for what you'll need for class.
Meet Your Teacher
I believe that everyone can draw, and the only wasted paper is unused paper. I'm on a mission to connect people with their art materials in a way that builds foundational skills that you can count on in any style of creativity and any medium.
Hello, creative human!
I'm Jen Dixon. [you can't see it, but I'm waving to you]
I'm a multidisciplinary artist and art educator, living rurally on the wild North Cornwall coast. My art covers everything from graffiti-influenced illustration and mixed-media abstracts to more traditional painting and drawing. I enthusiastically believe in following ideas, trying everything, and taking risks in art.
I have an Industrial Design degree, which in... See full profile
Hands-on Class Project
For this class, I’ll assume you have basic sewing skills. I’m using a sewing machine in the videos, but you can hand sew your apron instead; it’ll just take a bit longer to finish your project.
Here’s what you need for the basic project:
- Old jeans
- Thread and a bobbin
- Heavy duty needles (I’m using a purple needle in my sewing machine)
- Fabric scissors
- Iron and ironing board
- Long straightedge, yard stick, or similar
- Pencil, chalk, pen or similar to mark your denim
If you want to make a slightly fancier apron:
- Seam ripper for removing pockets
- Cotton webbing or ribbon for more attractive straps
- Iron on patches for fun decoration
If the jeans you’ve chosen to make your aprons have holes in the knees, you may want to patch those first.
The downloadable PDF has diagrams of the cuts, folds, and sewing.
Ready? Let’s make an apron!
