1. 00 introduction: Welcome to a storytelling for animators. We're going to start this course by learning basic concepts off a screen writing. Then we're going to learn narrative design, how to write compelling characters by constructing a solid psychology. Then we're going to learn the proper format for a screen writing, how to write commercials, short films, TV pilots and a feature film. After all that, we are going to write our own short film together, and at the end of the course, I'm going to give you some tips and tools and how to pitch cell and produce your own stories. These curses perfect for animators and concept artists that want to work in their own projects. Storyboard artist that want to improve their narrative and people that are interested in the screen writing and storytelling. 2. 01 01 event and beat: in this lesson, we're going to learn to basic concepts, off screen, writing, event and beat. Let's start with the fears one. A narrative event is everything that happens and help this story. Progress event means change. It could be a fight between enemies, a day between lovers, the death of a relative or a group of friends singing an event East charge with an emotion , positive or negative. And he has some weight in the story. In other words, it has to be relevant. But that does not mean that every event have to be equally important. For example, these two events in the movie The Lion King is Car kills Mufasa and seem by singing with to mourn and Puma. These two events are from the same movie on they have different emotional charge and different weight and relevance. In this story, the next concept is beat. Bit is the rhythm of the story. How Evans are connected in an actual reaction bond. You can establish real um off the story by creating contrast between events. One of them can be long, and the other short one can be sat on the other happy, but they have to be connected. For example, without this car killing Mufasa, Simba wouldn't have met Timonen. Puma are full scream plea off a movie usually has between 40 and 60 events. 3. 01 02 Scene: in this lesson, we are going to learn the concept off. See, a scene is basically just a group of events. But the tricky part understanding seen is that they can be so different. A scene can happen in one location or in multiple places. In a sin can appear just one character or a large group of individuals. A scene can be one minute long or 23 minutes long. It can be a single shot or a little bit more complex. Robert McKee describes the scene as a story in miniature. This means that seems have a structure, justice, every story, the elements of a scene, our desire. Action, conflict and change. Let's analyze one off my favorite since in the Siri's one piece in the morning for arc I don't know the oh, wait So somehow serve your mood you know e di dio Who you You're You knew what you were talking to me that you can you are you sekai no mayo So you're oh season You going todo what are you in this scene? The desire waas from coffee trying to stop the violence and unnecessary debts. The action West Kobe Explaining why the war should end the conflict was Admiral Second, Sochi disagreeing with coffee. The change happened when the character Shanks entered the scene and the stop the war. 4. 01 03 emotional value: Another important aspect of building us in is they change in emotional value. In a story. There are two types off emotional charge of value. Pleasure being positive, campaign being negative. In the previous lesson, we analyze a scene that started with sounds off guns and cannons in the background, any character crying desperately. These emotional value is negative. The audience felt that this inspiration off the characters, trying, dying and trying to escape. But at the end of the scene, the aliens felt relief because one of the four emperors off the C R. Right to stop the war. But a scene can be really young, and it may need more than one change in emotional Bali. Let's watch these seen from game of Thrones. Looks like very light armor. I like to move around. You could at least wear a helmet. You shouldn't drink before a fight. You learn this during your years in the fighting pits. I always drink. Before, if I could get you killed, you could get me killed. Today is not the day I die. You're going to find that I'm going to kill. He's the biggest man I've ever seen. Sizes letter. When You're flat on your back. Thank that girl. In the sights of gods and men, we gather to ascertain the guilt or innocence of this man. Terrian. Lannister made a mother ground from mercy. My father Give them such justice as they deserve. Maybe the warrior guide. The hand of a champion. Yeah. Don't leave me alone in this world. Never! They told you who I am. I am the brother of Elia Martell. You know why I have come all the way to this stinking shit pile of a city for you? I'm going to hear you confess before you die. You raped my sister! You murdered her! You killed her Children! Say it now and we can make this quick. You! Yeah! You murdered her. You killed Really ? What? You You'll kill. No, no, you can't yet. You haven't confessed. Thank you. Say her name? Elia Martell. You raped her. You killed her Children. Yeah. Martel, who gave you the order? Who gave you the order? Sigh her name. You right? Are you murdered her? You killed her Children. Say it! Say her name on your mark. God has made their will known to the Atlanta in the name of King Tommen of the house. Baratheon, first of his name. You hereby sentenced to death at the beginning. Off the scene, we can feel hope for teary in. Then we watched the Vipers skills with the spear on the positive value increases The mountain breaks his opponents weapon. And now the value has changed because we fear for teary in. Martel managed to hurt his opponent and now and now is laying on the ground who we are excited for. Teary. But then he started talking and we can feel how something is wrong. Then Martel dies on the chapter ends with a very negative charge. 5. 01 04 acts and sequences: an event is the smallest element of the story. A group of events for May seen a story in miniature, but a group of between two on five scenes can form a sequence. The story borders and layer. Artists usually work with this element, and they can help us. A writer to connect scenes a group of sequins formed the largest element of the narrative structure. Theatric act on a story usually have between three and five act. We're going to learn about acts. Morty Oblique in the next unit. But for now, remember that East group of sequence with a climatic scene at its peak. 6. 01 05 Theme and controlling idea: same premise and controlling idea. Thes three concepts can be confusing to learn, because their definitions can change according to the book or offered your storing from jumped early this Christ theme as the writer's view of the proper way to act in the world, however, Robert McKee, Things of themes has controlling ideas used to tell the emotional lesson off a story. A lot of writers described the were premise as those controlling ideas, while Robert McKee the finds premise as the idea that inspires the story. All the writer referred toe a controlling idea or premise as main close. So in general, these concepts referred to a statement or sentence off the writer's opinion on the main conflict. For example, the premise of Shakespeare Sotelo is jealousy kills love. Macbeth's premise or controlling idea is blind. Ambition leads to destruction. But the important thing here is not to memorize thes definitions but to understand them and use them to write compelling stories. So now I'm going to show you how I use thes concepts to understand on write a story. But I wanted you to know that these definitions can change from book to book. I'm going to use us an example. They animate death Note. A writer usually comes up with ideas asking the question. What if the idea off this story is What if you have a notebook that allows you to kill a person by just writing its name? For me, theme is what your stories about a simple concept that can influence all the aspects off your story like you're controlling idea art and characters. The theme of the note is Justice. You can see justice everywhere in the note they are is full of symbolism that refers to Justice. Kira describes himself as justice, and the premise or controlling idea is about justice. The premise is a sentence that describes the moral of the story and is used as a guideline and usually is formed by value on coast. For example, in the previous example off, fellas, the value is love on the coast off its change is jealousy in Death knows the controlling idea or premise or whatever you decide to call it is power corrupts your definition of justice or power leads to corruption. This idea is used to change the protagonists from the best student in Japan, so the worst serial killer in history, all in the name of justice. You can also use a controlling idea to bring conflict to your story through a counter idea . For example, Kira thinks of himself as justice, but l disagrees with him bringing conflict to the story on whoever wins can claim to be correct. 7. 01 06 OUTRO: we finalized Unit one and you learn the basic concepts off the screen. Right? With this information, you can understand and learn the second unit, which will cover narrative the sign so you can plan your stories.
