Stationery 101 - Quick & Easy Notepads

1. Intro: Hello, I'm Nina. I'm an artist and a teacher. I love reading books, and I'm known to read about 5 to 7 books at the same time. I love buying on making my own stationery on in this spill share class. I'm going to show you how to make a quick and easy note pad like one of these on. You will be able to make one of these note pads for materials that you've probably got lying around at home Onda and in most of my work as an artist, I try to reuse materials that I've already got on. I've started making note paths from the papers are materials that would normally have ended up in the recycling. So in this class, I'm going to show you how you can make a note pad from a printer paper that has been printed on one side. But it's still usable on the other side. I. Then, for another note, I'm going to use used envelopes on for the back. We're going TV cereal boxes and to make the cover of the note pad, there's an option of using images from magazines or books wrapping paper left over pretty papers from other craft projects to name but a few. But of course, this doesn't mean that you can't use ordinary printer paper on a cardboard for your class project awful creating any of the's no paths on hope to see you in my class. 2. Tools & Materials: So, first of all, let's talk about the tools materials we're going to need. I really like to use my cutting that on a craft knife on my roller to cut paper. But we can, of course, use a pair of scissors. Or if you have a guillotine or paper cutter, all of those work really well. And a letter opener or knife used as a letter opener way are going to lead PV a goo. I'm just using very single kids blue. So that works perfectly. You will be needing envelopes kind of over this size or bigger size. We can use paper from your stash that has bean printed on on the one side. Don't needed anymore. But you could still use the other side. Thanks for the back off a note. You are going to need some card on. Um I like to use just cardboard from cereal box. Nothing you could do is hold on. Teoh. Any envelopes that have cardboard back and then for a friend off your node pack the cover. He can use ALS sorts of papers if we're staying with trying to recycle materials that we've already got. I've got a roll of wallpaper that would work. You might have wallpaper samples he could use. You can use pattern paper that comes with magazines like Flow magazine or Deafness Diaries . Then you can also use various catalogues if you're just looking inside or these pattern samples would work really well, asked the cover off a note pad. Or maybe an image that appeals to you. The same goes with magazines. If you come across any images, let me just thought you really like. This is quite colorful. That might work really well. So this find this would look quite nice on a note pad. Then you can use some images of flowers or, you know, landscapes, Gardens. Another option would be using an old coloring in book parts of that e thought this would make quite a nice cup of four. Note. Another idea, then the other thing you can use is, for example, wrapping paper gift wrapping paper. And that could also be a way of either using up bits of wrapping paper that you still got left. But they're not big enough to wrap a present. Oh, you know, really beautiful paper that you've kept. You don't know what to do with that. Okay, so in the next video, we are going to call out of the paper on the cardboard. Two slides. Fire. No. 3. Cutting the Paper & Backboard: the first thing we're going to do is cut out. Paper on. I'm going. Teoh, cut the whole lot. This pain, I want to go. I'm going to use my cutting mat on, um, my craft knife. But you could definitely use a paper cutter or beauty. You even have scissors to cut the paper. It really depends on how big you want your note part to be and how big the sheets of paper are going to be as we every psyching material aids kind, make sense to make the most of the material you've got. So one idea would be to either half a sheet of paper on. Then you would have a notebook or note part of this size. I quite like the size off 1/4 off the paper. So I would have Teoh cut the paper in health and then in half again. I've got this little note pad. It's not quite 1/4 in this case. It was the size off the cover sheet that determining the size off the note pad it was awesome. Paper had left from another craft project and I thought we would make a nice cover, so I just cut for the pages on the back of accordingly. So it's almost 1/4. And I personally really like this size. So this is what I'm going to go for on, um, cut this sheet of paper or the paper into four parts. If I don't want to measure the paper, Well, I could do it's just folded in half because then I've got the line, okay? And I'm using one of my binder clips just to hold all the papers together so they don't move around when I'm cutting room. On another reason why every like working with a cutting back, is because it but all the lines so it can make sure that all the nines so that the paper is straight aligned. The next thing I'm doing is I'm just cutting paper, maybe cutting more than one sheet of paper. It's really important that you don't You too much strength while you're cutting. I just go along gently. Um, that I'm good to do the same. Make sure that all the pages I find the clip or, um the clothes pink to hold the pages together on. Then I'm going to do the same thing with the binder clip and hold the pages together again . If you have a lot of binder clip, just use some clothes pegs. I'm going to cut pages. I know that my pages cots. I'll get the backboard. I'm good to use a serial books. Then I'll just use one of the pages has a template on. I'm going to make a few marks. And as I've got enough cardboard here for to note pads, I'm just going to cut two at the same time, mining up the, uh, cardboard with my lines on the cutting mats on. If he was used scissors, I would recommend you draw lines, too. Make it easier for you to cost along the lines rather than just have these didn't rocks. - Now that you've got your back boards ready, we can assemble on the next stage is we're going to glue the pages on the blackboard together 4. Assembling the Notepad: on. The next thing we're going to do is we're going to glue the pages, do the backboard. I'm amusing. Ordinary PV a glue on what I've done. I've just pulled a little bit into the top off the job because I find it easy to apply. And I've got a good sheep little brush. I don't want to get any of my nights of brushes covered in glue. Even if I wash it out. I just prefer to use a Jeep rush for this, and it works perfectly fine. First of all, what you want to do is make sure that allow your pages on the backboard are lined up perfectly at the top. And then I'm going to use the finder clips to hold the pages together. Uh, just good. I usually out about 2 to 3 layers of blue. True should be enough. But sometimes I just like Teoh extra layer. You know, what I'm doing is, uh, spreading at the glue top. Make sure that allow the pages are covered include including the backboard on the ones I've done this I take to move the violent clips that further up to the top on, um because I want all the pages to be sitting on top of each other so that they glued together really nicely. I'm using another binder clip on top together on then I've got to wait for this layer of glue to dry before add another layer. So I'm going to do next. Is show you how you can use the clothes pegs to just instead of the binder clips. So doing the same thing, Making sure that will my pages a long line at the top on. Then I'm just using the execs state of find the clips on again a flying with blue. You can also use your finger to spread out the glue. I don't really like I don't really like the feeling of glue on my fingers. I prefer to use my cheap little brush for this that you go. And now I feel that covered the whole area really nicely. You're not moving these up a little bit on at the top. I'm just going out of fuel thanks to, uh, cold depressed the pages together. If you've got a book, press bend over, Zeke, use your press. Oh, you could always use some heavy books, but That might be tricky because you don't want the glue Teoh attached to the to the books and I want to find with the binder clips or the pegs. You kind of when you're applying the glue, you're making sure that they will be staying in place on again. Uh, you know, we need to wait for the first layer of glue to dry before we can add another one at the top . It might be the case that the pegs might stick a little bit to the glue, so that means that maybe you're the top page, like get a little bit damaged. But that's fine. Always take it off. Okay, let's wait for the glue to dry. Now the fuel dried Andi, I can add another layer of glue. You might actually be able to just take off the clips together. Now the pages are boarding together quite well. You just do the same thing just out another. A new to the, uh, top of the page is you just let this drawing. Same with other notebook that worked Well, One of the pegs did stick a little bit to the top of the paper, but I think it is possible to do with the damage and always take off the first too much. I just do the same thing and as I said before is really up to you. Whether you want to give to players or three, you do three by things that most cases to should be. Andi. Once glue has dried, we can add our pattern paper cover to it. 5. Adding the Cover: the glue on birth. That line no path is drawing. Now I can add the cover. It needs to be bigger than the actual note pants, because it's going to be glued to the back board so you can see that left with this one on . Um, we can't open this out, Onda. And before for this one, I just used a paper that already hot, but this was a pattern printed on ordinary printer paper. It's quite thin paper on it. It works, okay, But I think I would probably recommend using paper that a little bit thicker than the printer paper, because you will be when you're using, you know, part you're going to open aren't closer a lot. So kind of this bit of paper could do from having a little bit of extra strength. But this one works just as well. I'm going to go this way and I'm using my note pads a template I'm just what was really good about this Because I've got these patterns. I've already got a line, so I'm just going to use this line Teoh lineup My my note pad theater thing I'm probably going to do if I want the kind of the image of friend to look kind of symmetrical. I won't get any of this onto the front cover, so I kind of want thes three lines to be fairly in the middle. So that's something else to think about. It would be easy to see. I'm positioning it in a way I can make sure I've kind of got the middle strip, kind of roughly in the middle of like no, just lining it up their line. Then I'm just going to make practical straight on that. Just a mom on, then I'm probably going Teoh, leave most of the paper for the kind of of the flat that goes round. We'll see. I might cut a bit of it off. So first of one, like, want to just play this straight line? I think one of the nice thing about just using up paper you've got, if I got this wrong and I didn't like the look like this cover. For my note, it wouldn't really be the end of the world because I haven't used some expensive paper. Could get really upset for having used it. Cut it the wrong way. Okay, look, yeah, it's fine. I'm going to hold it like this, going to be voted over. And this is what I usually do are just position and to wear what Teoh be. I can grab my binder clips again, losing another note. Papa is drawing so just closed just to hold it in place on. Then I could just fold brought this bit over. I'm kind of making a nice line years of crease it. Okay, kind of just like that. That can kind of look, I'm really tempted to cut it off here where the pattern ends. And I think I have enough paper on this side to make sure that my cover would stay on sleep . Just cut. This is a bit. Now it's time for a glue stick. Just do it back here. It's very important that you don't hurt any glue this time. You don't have any glue on the top off the pages because otherwise you won't be able, Teoh. Tell any off you'll pages from the note pad. So you just attach the cover to the back off bad I'm going to do. I'm just going to make a pencil line. So I know exactly I need to apply the glue. And then I'm just going to lie glue to back off my, uh, Pat, make sure that it's all covered really nicely. Then just you your paper onto the back, the just wait for it to dry. You've got your No, not finished. Well, you could do is you want to do, um he could use the bone folder to make a nice, nice edge. I think this works quite well. This is the second note pad I finished on. These have been a mouse that he remember. I want to use e, uh, from a one verse, uh, doodle doodle books. Um, coloring in books on. So I got back to size on. I find that worked out really well. We got our to know packs. I'm made from recycled paper on Next, we are going to have a look at how you can use envelopes to make no passes out there instead of the printer paper that has bean printed on on the one side. But it's still usable on the other side. I'm going to use envelopes. These are used in my nerves, but I want to reuse the backs off the envelope, so that's going to be the next video. 6. Envelope Notepad - Cutting & Assembling: in this video, we're going to have a look at how we can turn used envelopes into a note parent. Usually you would get at least here in the UK you tend to get to size of envelopes delivered. It's by the this kind of long side with the window. Uh, I have a friend for this bigger size. They usually have a window as well. I tend to find that I can use these envelopes in a lot of projects like I do one of things I'm doing with these. Use the back. I use them as pages in my rebound notebooks, books. Andi, I'm also using the pattern side because if you have a look at, but they can have the most amazing patterns on the inside. So I'm using those a swell I've created. So, uh, like mole spin type A little K's where I've bean using the inside off three envelopes. Andi covered the little notebooks with those up, and I'm planning on doing a class on that as well at some point. So let's say if you were going for the for the bigger size 10 below, then you would need to get hold of the back of the envelope. One thing. You it's just go around or the edges with a knife or a envelope broken up. And then you've got the whole piece of paper you could just cut around the edges were the envelope instead of opening it with a knife kind of cut around it, and then you've got his page as well. Then just unless you want, you're not to be this size. Then you've got one sheet of paper, but you could also have it on. Then you would get two sheets of paper out of one envelope. It would end up with this size, which is quite a nice eyes. What I am trying to do now, because it I said, I find myself reusing the bigger ones a lot, but I haven't got back many uses for the smaller ones. So I thought making no pads from these would maybe be a good idea of recycling the envelopes. So, in principle, going to do the same thing. First of all, make sure that the gloves I'm going to use we'll have roughly the same size just to make it easier with the whole cutting process on the then I would. The next thing I would have to do is get hold of off the back off the envelope, and I could either. I mean, that this is something you could do while you're watching TV. Another option, which would probably make the whole process of cutting them to size a lot quicker. Just got a whole bunch of the envelopes at the same time. Then again, if you've got a cutting maps, it makes it easier to kind of determine the length and width fuel on the pages. - No , I just copped a bit off the top so that I've got so that I'm separating all the envelopes into the back in front. Okay, then I'm being the same thing at the end on also because even though I was trying to make sure that the in videos of roughly the same size, some of it shorter some longer So I'm getting the same length of paper do me is cut a strip . I think I might do, because we've got plenty of banks here. Funny might actually be easier to glue or the through the top. Oh, no. Just make sure along the pages will stay together. What? I'm cutting. They just do water from one go. I'm cutting it quite carefully because of the uneven wits of the paper. Why did it it quickly? I could Some of the paper could rip. Try Teoh Right back. Way to go. I got side cut. Um, I could do the same thing on the other side. And maybe let's just do this to make, uh, this no padlock medias possible. But you obviously we absolutely don't have to do that. I've got on my paper cut. Now I'm going to cut a backboard for this one. I've found another packaging that, uh, I'm going to use for the backboard on, uh so the next thing I'm going to do is cut it to size on. I'm going to use one of the pages again. Template. I'm going to use the top of this fold as the, uh, top lying on. Then I'm just going to make you marks. Yeah, trying to make sure I don't move it. There's a really great way of using up all the cardboard get from all kinds of packaging. Kept this good. I'm lining up the little marks I made lining them up with the nine on my cutting that Let me go put it all together. Just make sure that the pages no, not really nicely at the top, because that is going to make it easier for you to do them together. I used to find the clips pegs to, uh I told them all together you will find that, um, working with the envelopes is it's kind of a little bit more difficult to get. Get the pages to all be exactly the same. Because if you're working with ordinary, that printer paper type of paper because all the pages are the same size to start with, it can be easier to work with them and order because you've got kind of like an extra thickness on this size side due to the fact that you've got the envelope flap here and I'm going to do, I'm going to take roughly about half off them. I'm going to turn them around. That means I've got some on this side and some on the other side on. By having done that, I get kind of the same kind of thickness on the top. I get the binder clips, I'm going to get my do on my brush. I'm just going to do the same thing I did with the other note parts just things to the top . I'm going to put another binder clip up here just to make sure that all the pages are sitting together really nicely. Right? And all I have to do now is wait for the glue to dry. Then I'm going to add one or two more layers. 7. Adding the Cover: our envelope. No pad has dried. I've got two layers of blue here on that seems to have worked really well. And I want Teoh add a cover to this one. I'm going to go for one off, uh, pattern papers that came from a magazine. This one is called Molly Makes. But there so many magazines out there that are also have a beautiful pattern papers available. But, you know, you could go for something like give Russell paper as well, and I'm just going to look. Oh, big my cover needs to be. I think I'll probably just leave the whole length to fold it over. I'm just going to make it a mark here. They just to over flee using my notes because a template cut to size. And then I use this bet for another project. Maybe a tiny make it better. I got my cover to size. I've got my note pad. I'm going to put it on from a friend position. Nick, use the pegs. Just cover in place. Go back and check if I'm Happy way. It looks kind of adjusted in a bit when I'm happy. Everything folded? Yeah, Products. Fine. I think I'm going to make a little mark here? No, exactly. When Blue. Sure that I'm spreading out while that woody whole area is covered around the edges. I don't have to do. Fold the paper over. Do it to the back of a notebook. Go what you can dio iss while you're waiting for it to dry. You can just stick the note pad under some heavy books. Just, you know, flattening. I could make sure that the glue is drying evenly. But you know what? That's right. You've got your second variation of note pants. Sit on. That works perfectly. The second variation, the note pad made from envelopes Curry takes up a little bit more time to make, then our first variation where we were just using the printer paper. But I still find it very satisfying because now I use something that I mean, you know, that might normally just be thrown in the recycling on, and I've created a note. Paris. I love my cover, and I know I'm going to use it. And even if I'm just going to use it as a shopping list or I've also used one of the note pads for my eyes. Class Project: for your class project. Just start by uploading a photograph off the papers you're going to use if it's going to be envelopes, as in this one or a paper you've got in the recycling, or you might even have another idea.
