1. Welcome! Here's an overview of the class. : welcome to the first class of Thai languish. If you're curious about high language and want to learn how to speak, the first thing you need to know is to make the right pronunciation. Why is it important? Because each language is different and it has its own sound. If you're a native English speaker, for example, High will sound very different from what you're used to. That's why learning the characteristic off tie languish will help you speak Thai better. And also you will be understood by Thai people when you speak. So in this class we are going to start with pronunciation, and then you will get to explore the basic phrases that we usually use in every language, such as Hello, thank you. You're welcome and so on and at the end of the class will be making sentences together. You'll learn the basics sentence structure, like how to create question our statement, how to create a statement and negative statement, and will be creating dialogues back and forth so you can practice speaking Thai with me. By the end of the course, I'm sure you'll be confident that you can learn Tai and speak tight. Clearly, are you excited to get started? Let's go 2. Speaking Thai made easy. Here's what you need to know. : Okay. I know you want to hear about this. Why? It is so easy to speak Thai. Well, I'm going to give you three reasons. And I know you're gonna feel excited to start speaking. 1st 1 is we don't congregate birds ever. So it is so easy. It makes it much easier for you to learn Thai. So if we don't complicate Berks, then what do we dio? We have words that is time related. And then you just put those words in the sentence according what you want to say. For example, you say I eat, I would say in highway I eat today I eat. And then the word doing which means I am eating or I ate would be I eat already something like that. And ah, in English. You have to congregate, Burbs depends on the time that you want to indicate, but in Thai is pretty simple. And if you learn French or you speak French or Spanish or Italian, you know that you congregate verbs. According to the person who is doing the action too, it makes it even more complicated. Great, but in high, it's simple. Just as that. And then the second reason is the sentence structure. It's simple. So it's like subject for object. And then when you want to make question, usually this is Thea other way around. When you want to make question in English, you put question word and then followed by the statements or whatever you want to ask. But in tie you make a statement, and then you put a question word. So the room was a little bit different. But this is always pretty much the same, and it's pretty simple. The last reason is, the more you learn, the faster you can learn, because tie worse is it has, like small words combined and make into new word. Let me give you an example if you know the word heart right. For example, die hard as if you learned a new word. The dye, the means good. And then John is heart. Di di means excited. The site, good for the heart or word heart die and then followed by dumb black color died on together means cruel or not generous. Not very nice Ready diadem. And, uh, you know the list. Go on and on and on. We have a little worse that makes, um, that it's like a prefix or suffix, and it's going to help you guess the meaning of the new words that you learn along the way , which is gonna be really fun because you can start to recognize that. Ah, you know this word. It's about people, and this word is probably about facility or something like that. And, uh, yeah, you increase your vocabulary that way. 3. The most important thing you need to know about speaking Thai. : before we move on to start a lesson, let me introduce you. One concept that's really important in learning Thai Thai is tonal. What do I mean by total? Ty has tones, and if you have learned Mandarin Chinese before then you know that Mandarin Chinese has tones as well. In Thai, we have five tones, but don't worry about that, because I will get to that later. But if you have never learned any tonal language like Mandarin Chinese before then you might not know exactly what tone is. Let me give you an example. The reason that a total language eyes sounds different from English or any other non tonal language is because if you change the tone, a syllable or word, it could change the meaning, for example and high to say to come is my. But to say Ah, horse is my and then a dog is my So I'm going to say that again. My, my, my, can you hear the difference? You might not feel like it's different, but it is. It's like a note. When you learn music, the each syllable has a note and itself in English. You use intonation to accept to express your feelings. Um, when you speak certain things. But in Thai, if you raised your boys all over your boys, you have to do with according to what you want to say. Because each word has its owned tone in itself already. Let me give you in the sample. You can say I don't know in English in many different ways. Let me say three versions that I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Okay, that's three expressions, right in Thai. This is how you say it, Samir. A war tomorrow, Samir. Whoa. So three expression, too. But the sound of the word I don't know, it's exactly the same because you can't really change that. Anyway, um, when you learned high, the most important things is to not worry about the tones like, Oh, am I saying the right tone but to imitate exactly as native speakers as and remember to say it the same way all the time. But as you learn more in this course than you will start to get better because nobody ever gets it right from the first time. So it takes time to practice 4. Let's try to pronounce the alphabet together. Do you have difficulty with any particular sound?: welcome to type organization one No. One in this section you are going to learn about Thai alphabet and in Thai alphabet. We have 44 letters and 21 sounds. Why is that? Because we have letters that produced the same sound. Let me give you an example. The sound like s in English, which is we have four letters that has a sound in Thai. So we're not going to go through every letter in the alphabet. Here we are going to just go through every sounds that we have in the alphabet. And I would like to know if you have any problems pronouncing any sounds because some of the sound that we have in Thai it's not the same sounds that English has. So if you're ready, let's get started. So let's start from the beginning. The first sound is God, which could be represent that by the letter G in English, just like the word gun Go God. Next cell is call, which could be represented by the letter K in English, just like the word cats cut call. The next sound is a little bit tricky. It is the sow law, which could be represented by the letter and G in English and in English. You use this NJ sound at the end of the word or syllable, but in Tai we use it as an initial sound inward rece syllable to so you. Um if you don't know how to saying law the first time I try to say the word thing and then you know that doesn't sound That's the law sound. So, um, some people say it wrong like No, no, that's not correct. The base of your time will touch the base of the, uh, program and that's it seeing Try to say the words sing and then try to say all after, like seeing law and then the next time try to silent the sound sing and then try to release the sound wall outside seeing look Mm. And there you go. You got more sound. Next sound is Daw, which could be represented by the letter J in English. Just like the word just the next sound is taw, which could be represented by the letters c etch in English, just like the word chair or a chip. Sure, Shaw, the next sound is saw, which could be represented by the letter s in English, Just like the word sit or sip. So? So the next sound is yaw, which could be represented by the letter. Why in English? Just like the word Yes. Yeah, yeah. The next sound is Daw, which could be represented by the letter D in English. Just like the word dog. Duh. The The next sound is, uh, which could be represented by the letter D and T, because together is not duck. It's not. Tuck is somewhere in between is the think about the word stock in English. That's the sound. That's the sound of the tea in the worst stop. So say stuff the lol stop. Ah, that's the sound you're looking for. Ah, The next sound is tall, which can be represented by the letter t in English And just like a word time, huh? Call The next sound is no which can be represented by the letter and in English. And just like the word No, no, no. The next sound is ball which could be represented by the letter B in English, just like the word boy. But the the next sound is ball which could be represented by the letter B and P in English . The reason that is being P because it's between, but and Puck think about the word spa in English spot. That's the sound of the P in the worst spot that you're looking for a spot. But, uh ah, the next sound is Paul which can be represented by the letter p in English. Just like the word pop. Uh huh. The next sound is fall which could be represented by the letter F in English. Just like the word fun Fun far The next sound is ma which could be represented by the letter M in English. Just like the word my must. Nah, the next sound is the rolling time sound because we don't have that in English is it Can be represented by the letter are in English But in fact you have to roll your tongue a little more. Is the sound raw raw? So try to soft in your tongue and as you ah touch of use your tongue to touch your upper gum and release the air and try to make a ruling Sound like a little vibration. Uh, bra. The next sound is law, which can be represented by the letter Al in English, Just like the word like Le Law. The next sound is wall which can be represented by the letter W in English. Just like the word when Well, yeah. The next sound is the sound haw which could be represented by the letter Ash in English. Just like the word how? Huh? Huh? The last sound if the sound Aw, which could be represented by the letter o or even a e i o u in English Because it is a special letter that can be a continent in a word. Or it can be a part of the bow in Thai south as well. So now you have it. 21 sounds in the alphabet. Do you have any challenge with any sounds? Do you have any problems pronouncing a particular sound? Just let me know in the discussion and you can always ask questions and I'll try to help you 5. Let's try to pronounce Thai vowels together. Do you find any sound difficult?: in high languish. There are two types of miles long vowels and short vows. We are going to go through all the essential sounds that makes the basic files together today. And, ah, you have any challenge to any other sounds? Please let me know. Uh Ah. Hey. Mm. It's Ah. Oh, Oh! Ah! Uh um Well oh, Uh ah. What? Oh, uh, yeah. Thea, you do that? Yeah. Uh uh um I e how well done. Now you have learned all the basic vowel sounds. You are ready for the next step, which is tones. See you in the next session. 6. Thai tones explained. Let's practice your listening skill!: hi. In this lesson, we are going to talk about tones, and if you speak English originally and you have never learned any tonal language before, you might find that tone. It's kind of a new concept to you, but you know what? When you speak English, because this lesson intended to make it especially for English speakers. If you speak English, you actually used tones in your voice and your sentences. It's just that it's called intonation. It's just that it's not fixed. But in high languish, poems are fixed word by word. So if you change the tone off a word than the meaning changes as well. So let me, um, give you an example. If you say beautiful and the word buildable in Thai its way, you have to say exactly like this Sway. But if you say it's a way, it means unlucky. You don't want to say that to anybody, right? So that's just an example of how a tone can change the meaning of the words. That's why I want to show you the concept of the tones today so that you can grabs. What does it mean by um by saying the tones right Anyway, in time, languish. We have five tones in total, and I'm going to show you one by one. Okay, So as you can see, these are the symbols that we use in phonetics when you start to learn how to speak Thai. Although these marks are not the type of script, it's not a told mark that we use anti script itself. So this is just, um, the marks that guide you through, um, the tones. Anyway, so the first tone that we have is called middle tone Meadow tone is just a flat tone is called neutral tone. And I'm going to show you an example of each tone one by one later. The second tone is low tone and the reason we call it low tone because is the sound is a little bit lower that the middle tone on the third sound as falling tone. The reason we called it falling told, because the voice will go up and then slightly going down. And then the fourth tone that we have is called high tone and high tone as just like the name. The tone is high, okay? And you can notice that right away on the last tone is rising tone, which means the sound. Just go down a little bit and then go up. That's why it's called Rising, just like how the marks are indicated. Okay, I'm going to say a word and I'm going to use a word, Ma, and I'm going to say all in five tones start for mill. It'll to rising tone. Are you ready? Okay. My, my Ah, ma, my, uh, can you hear the difference? I'm going to say that once again. My ah, my Ah, my Ah! He might not catch it the first time you hear it. But once you get used to hearing Thai language a lot, then you will start to notice the difference between each syllable and wish tone. It ISS. So I have a few tips to help you understand each tones more, and it will help you, ah, recognize each tone more correctly. Okay, on the first tone is called Middle Tolan because it's flat. So think about when you don't feel anything or you aboard. You just kind of like sigh and just say whom? Well, that's the sound of relaxation is just neutral. And an example of Thai words that houses tone is my ah gain, I e. The second tone. It's called Low Tone and I think about when it you are a little bit mad or cranky and whenever we're matter cranking well over or voice little. And that's how you say load home. So think about what you want to say. No, you don't say no, That's neutral way. So you want to say you want to say No? No so the see a difference? No, no, no. That is low tone. So example of Thai word that houses tone is yeah, on go on the third tone it's called falling tone and that think about this tone Ask the tones of realization when you say, Oh, oh, so this sound is going up and then going down 00 I got it now Yeah, yeah, that is falling tone. So in English, you say, Oh, yeah, that's falling tone, anti and example off tie wars that has these tone. Our cow, My Lynn. The fourth tone is high tone and how high you don't know, right? So you know, if you don't have any ref Lynn's point at this point. But if you listen to the word is kind of like light and a little higher. And, um, just like when you say what, Huh? So I call this tone is the tone of confusion or not Sure. Wait. So you say what, huh? That's high tone. An example of Thai wars 1/2 high tone are No. My soon BC assuming already, okay. And the last home that I want to show you today is rising tone and ah ah, lot of people can get it right away because rising tone is at home of questioning. So when you speak English, you rise. You raise your voice a little bit at the end of a sudden hymns because you're indicating that you were asking questions. Like what? What right am I right? Right? It's going down and then going up again. That's rising tone in Thai languish. So, um, example of Thai words that has rising tones are calm. How time? Okay, so here's the time. Two week have everything. Have you just learned in this? Listen, I'm going to say, um, each tone again. Um, three times we reached home so that you can hear the difference. It feels like learning music. Okay? Just to help you week up and pray in your ear to hear the difference of east home using the word ma again My ah ah, my ah ma, ma Ma Ma My my my, my, my uh my my Okay, question time. I have five words for you to guess the tone and leave in the this custom below and let me know it is hard to identify or, you know, right away a ah which tone that word iss. Okay. Are you ready? So the first word is Nah, nah. Second word iss hum home The third word ISS cow How the fourth word is Hi. Hang on the fifth word That last one is wrong. Oh, okay. I hope you enjoy this lesson and I will see you in the next lesson. 7. Tips to help you sound like a Thai person. : so welcome to the new session. Where you gonna start? You really speak some Thai. And before you get to speak some tie, there are a few things like need to know about my language. Obviously, you know that tie sound so different from English, And there a few tips to help you se more like a tie. So the first thing that want you to notice I'm going to give you an example. And you told me what you notice in English syllables. I'm going to say three words and these artworks Cat bark Sick as you can notice that English syllables or words contains a puff of air when you will you have tea or kay or key at the end. So you address the lats sound the final sound off a syllable, and there's always some little extra public care. If you say that word, um, alone, right, so you say cat instead of cat. But here's the thing. High syllable do have these kind of final sounds, but we never relieve any. We don't address the final sound, so there's no audible released at the end off each syllable. So I'm going to say these three worse again in pie style. So the 1st 1 is cat Hi style would be cat. And for the word bark, you would say back and put a word zip in Thai. It would be sick, so you can notice that the last final sound off each syllable is mute. And that's the character off tie syllable. Okay, And the second thing that you notice is that you can hear a different tone when I start to say the word bark. And then it's back and it's just it sound different, right? So I want you to know that in each syllable in high language has a tone. And it's a habit when high learns English that we put tones and every suitable. So I'm going to give you an example of saying the work computer. Is this how you say computer in many ways to say, computer computer, computer way? Just do a computer. But I would say, Computer, the last thing that you will notice is that we don't say that our sound because we don't have it. So, for example, the work computer so we don't have that earth. We just say computer. It's very wide and open and no ruling Tom or the R sound at all. So I'm going to give you an example of dialogue. You just say good morning. How are you? This is how you say that in English, but in tie, you would hear the difference. It's like, in fact, until we have good morning. How are you? So all of this sounds like kind of flat, and we put middle toll on. We put, um tones in each syllable so you can see it sounds different, right? So my point is bad. I want you to notice a difference of how the language is and how you are going to develop the new accent for yourself. When you start speaking from Ty, just like how Give you an example before. If you want to say someone is beautiful, you have to say it right. You don't say sway. You say sway, right. So remember the tones, but don't stress about it too much because you'll get used to it. I'll give you some tips and tricks to help you become better at tones. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this session, and if you're ready to speak some Thai, I'll see you in the next list 8. How to sound polite when you speak Thai. : in high languish. We have particle for men and women to say at the end off anything that they want to say. Really? After ascendance or you we can use it as a sign of acknowledgement. Like like a Yes. If someone calls you and you want to say yes. Used this particle A swell for women. We have this word and you can see fanatics here, huh? You say, cut short on low tone, nice and soft. Put it at the end off anything you want to say. You will sound nice and polite instantly. Okay? And for men, you have another word which is totally do friends it ISS cup as a conceit of genetics here it's high tone and is short syllable crap crap. And also, at the end, no audible release. Okay, Crap. Sometimes a lot of times people will just give the rolling tongues out. They so you will hear cup cup, which it's not totally correct, but because many people say it. So just so you know that you will recognize that is is that work crap The proper way to say it is crap and not craft? Don't follow the fanatic down here you have to listen and say it correctly. And now you know how to be equal lights when you speak some chi. 9. How to say "how are you?": one thing, but I got asked a lot is do you say, How are you in Thai? Um let me tell you one thing. I've heard people here on this side of the world, especially in Canada, In the States where I live, they we say, How are you with people that we know even that we're not close to them. So we just say, How are you to show that, um, like, we care? Right? Um, high people don't really ask someone, like, don't really ask everyone in particular. How are you? Unless there's something that we need to know about the person like, um, certain situation you want to ask about what you want to know about this? Why you ask, how are you? How are things? Right? And to say, How are you in Thai ISS Sat by the my civil visible down here. Stop by the my together. So I d my so by means comfortable. Well relaxed. The means good. My is a question word like person Mark. So together is Are you good for you? Well, and the person usually says sobriety means yes, I'm good. I'm will. So in this case, I'm going to just show you how to say I'm good. I'm well, because if you say no, I'm not good. I'm not. Well, then the other person would say, Oh, what's the matter? And that will be, like a whole long conversation. So I'm just going to stop here and show you how to say, How are you? Just in case that you want to ask you a tire friend or someone that you know to show that you care? Like, how have you been? How are things Sobriety, My 10. How to say "hello" in Thai. : So the first word that you will learn when you start learning any languish would be hello and then you already for the word hello to say hello In Thai, we say PSA What? Be again? You can see fanatics down here. Sas What? Be no lo Middle together as so I eat. So what? Be a nerve. You're a woman. You say suck. What? The path. So what, Pekka? And if you're a man, you can say what? The craft. So what? The crap. Some people would just give the word suck the syllable sex and you would hear what be This is not like a proper way to say hello. And, um, it might not. It will show that you don't it We shall do you have, sir, and kind of friendship with the other person that you're saying because what be is like an informal way to say so what be And usually it's among friends. Like when your friends say would be would be what he So it's like so what? B But it's more like what's up? You know, because because it's more like a long friends. That's a what be, because it doesn't sound four more anymore. Um, yes, that's all about greetings and hi. One words that can you can say to just about anybody. 11. How to say "Thank you" in Thai and how to respond to it.: and this. Listen, you are going to learn the sweet word which is how to say thank you in Thai on to say thank you In Thai iss car couldn cop is low tone and growing middle tone again Cop coun car couldn't If you're a woman, use a cop NCAA And if you are a man you say cop couldn't crap couldn't cop couldn't cut Okay, So when someone say thank you to you how do you respond? Use first way Teoh respond to it is to say no problem It's all right is okay on this is how we say it My been right My following You told been middle by middle My pen dry my been dry maybe dry car maybe drying crap Another way to respond to a thank you is to say my pleasure And this is how you say pleasure in Thai you be I'll say that again Didn't the both syllables are middle told unity And if you're a woman to say you couldn't be If you're a man, you say you be crap And this is how you respond to a thank you in high 12. How to apologize in Thai and how to respond to and apology. : and this. Listen, it's not about huh? I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sorry that thing happened to you. It's not like that. It's how to apologize. Just like the word. Excuse me, but you can say I'm sorry. Excuse me. On together, that word is a pop to apologize. And that word is call Poor car called Car is writing Tone and tone is going to hold together iss call toe And if you're a woman, you say Kataoka And for a man caught talk cop how do you respond when someone says call, talk to you Then you can say it's OK. No problem is all right. Right. So we use the same thing that you just learned from the last lesson You say my been dry. It means no problem. My been dry And here's something about my been dry I want to give you another tips and tricks to remember that my been dry not only means that no problem Sometimes it means don't worry about it. Don't worry about it, okay? And this is the habit of we say the work might dry a lot and sometimes you will hear something like this My ally my bill. I know. Rolling hands out Noah and eyes like a a quick way to say it. You will hear that a lot. Weapon lie. My pin lie level. I met a lie. Did you hear that? Yeah, that's the word might been dry. And it means it's OK, don't worry about it is like an expression, Just like, um, you know, you worry about something and your friends say you know what? Never lie. People. I don't worry about it open too much. And that's how we say that in Thai. It's more like, um, our have it, too, is like how we express that we don't worry about things. Everything's gonna be fine. 13. How to say goodbye in different situations. : Whenever you start a conversation, there will be times when you need to say goodbye or see you later. And in Thai there are two kinds of situations that you encounter. The 1st 1 is that you're in a formal conversation with someone or the letter.
