1. Course Intro: hi, I'm generals on I'm an illustrator, graphic designer and educator based out of the Midwest and I run felon Sophia Creative Studio. In addition to the work that I do is a freelancer and a teacher. I run at the shop and I'm always looking for interesting ways to showcase my products. And the work that I do as an illustrator, specifically with my surface pattern is at work. As I thought about new and innovative ways to promote work on social media, I instantly thought about instance stories and all the fun background so that I was seeing due to the fund air features that are now available. They are, if you didn't know, stands for augmented reality. It's the stuff like filters that you might see on Snapchat or your insta stories. And even on your Facebook messenger, I thought this was the perfect way to have some fun with my creations in a promotional way , in a way that I could share them with others in this class I'm gonna walk you through. How did you just this We will be learning. How do you spark Air Studio to take our surface pattern designs to the next level by creating a background filter that could be submitted to Facebook or Instagram for use and stories
2. What You Will Learn: So in this class you're going to learn how to create a set of surface pattern designs, using affinity designer for iPad and how to use Spark Air Studio to translate them into background filters that we can use an instance stories or for your stories on Facebook. We will start with the basics of creating repeats, an affinity designer for the iPad specifically, and then creating a file that could be used and uploaded to spark air Studio. Then you will create a background for use, and it's the stories as a promotional tool to showcase your surface panel work or your illustration work. So what are you, the skills that you'll learn in this class? You will learn how to create a simple repeat pattern. Enough A designer for iPad. We will start with the basics of understanding the tool bars and the functions of the affinity works based specifically catering to the iPad version. Then we will start to build out our simple pattern. You will learn how to use the transform tools and the brushes to create a really simple pattern that you can apply it to your backgrounds. Then we will export our files and get them into Spark Air CEO, where we will go through the whole process of creating an air background, and then we will export that foul for use. Finally, we will go over how to load your file for review into the Spark Air pop so that you could get a life. All you need to take this class is your iPad, the affinity designer about it and, of course, your laptop or computer with Spark Air Studio downloaded onto it. I'll make sure to share the links to each of these programs in our resources section. Make sure you have a Facebook account and an INSTAGRAM account set up as well for testing.
3. Project Overview: we're class project, we will be creating a set off a war. Seamless repeats for uses Backgrounds in spark A are when you're done, you will essentially have in many collection of surface pattern designs that will be used as in story background. System it to spark air When you're done with your filters, take some screenshots of your previews or the testers that you're creating in Spark A, our studio that kind of show you using your background filters so you can share that the class gallery. So this class is geared towards intermediate learners as a spark. Air studio software can be a little hard to navigate at first, but once you get through the process the first time, it will be easier to use each time after a very basic technical knowledge of the affinity designer platform will be helpful, but I will be walking you through the basics of the iPad version of the software
4. Basics of Affinity Designer on the iPad: okay, Before we get started on creating our pattern, I wanna go through the basic interface of the affinity designer for iPad app. I know I've gone over this in a prior class, but I focus more or less on the affinity designer dust hap version. So today I want to go over the affinity designer iPad app. So if you click on your little icon, um, in your iPad, you'll be brought up into the if in a designer gallery. I already have some projects that I've been working on, so that's what you'll see here. If you scroll down, you can see all the projects that you may have saved. If you are just downloading this app and using it for the first time, it will probably be empty. In this gallery, you'll see projects that you've worked on, and in the upper right hand area you will see a plus icon, a question mark in a little sprocket. He hit the plus icon. It'll allow you to create new documents. You can create a new document from template, perhaps from a clipboard. If you've saved something in the past, can open something from the cloud you can import from a cloud, and you could also import from photos, create a new project or just create a simple new document. If we click on the little question mark Icon, this is your affinity designer help. This is an amazing resource for those of you heard just using affinity designer for the iPad For the first time, there's all kinds of different feature topics and different, you know, tutorials and helpful tips to basically get you used to the product in the interface. There's all kinds of things here that are just the basics of using the program. So this is a fantastic resource to use. If you click on the axe, it'll take us out of that section. Now, if you click on the little Sprocket that is the preferences for your app. You can change on the overall language where your files air, saving whether or not you want things to automatically update. Um, if you want to import PSD tax like Pete Photoshopped, text as text did not pixel layers. Um, it gives you all kinds of different options, so we're not gonna worry too much about those today. You could also change your color sources So, for example, for what we're working on, it's just gonna be seen on ah mobile device. So we don't need to change our color profile. But if we were to print, you might want to change your your color profile from RGB, um, to something like color match or to a seem like a option as well. I'm just because that's the type of ink that the printers use when you're doing something printed versus a mobile viewing interface, if you have done it will take you back to your original gallery area. So I'm gonna hit new document and what we're gonna do is we're gonna set up. What we're gonna do is set up a file for our pattern. Repeat. What you're going to want to do is change from points two pixels and then you're gonna change your dimensions to 2000 pixels by 2000 pixels and then your DP I, which is your dots per inch to 300. And what you want to do is create an art board because we are creating additional art board once we get into our file and then just said OK, a man before we get into creating the next part of this document. I want to go through the interface for iPad. What is fantastic about an affinity designer for iPad is if you click on that little question mark in the lower right hand corner, it basically gives you an outline off what all of the tools and menu options are in your interface. I'm a left hand side you'll see home, which will basically take you back to your home gallery. The first arrow and your options is the move tool. So if you click on an item and you use that move to a little moving around your campus, the no tool allows you allows you to adjust nodes on your, um, shapes that you create using the pen tool. And then I want to skip down to some of the key ones that we will be working with today. The vector brush tool in the pen tool. The vector brush to basically is kind of like a paintbrush Onley. You're creating a factor shape with it, meaning you'll be able to increase or decrease the size of the shape that you create with that tool without losing any resolutions, because it is a factor and then below that is the pencil very similar to illustrator. It is what allows you to fact arise your elements. We will be using the pencil a lot. In this tutorial. The fill tool will be the tool that we will be using to basically test out our patterns on . We'll talk more about it as we get to it, and then below. That will be using the like the rectangle tool, which is also the shape tool. If you hold down, you'll be able to select different shapes. Um, at the very bottom. The de select tool will allow you to de select an object the snapping tool if you turn that on and allows your lines kind of feel magnetic, which allows you Teoh kind of work on your grid. And below that, the little trash can icon is your delete option. So if you so like something with your move tool and then you hit the trash can, it's basically going to delete the item off of your canvas. On the right side, that little square it's is Highview II. If you click it, it'll hide your user interface. If you click on it again. It will show your interface right below it is the color studio. If we click on that, it will give you your color options. So you have different options of how you'd like to view your color. I like to use the color wheel, but sometimes people might like to use sliders. The RGB heck, sliders, you're seeing like a sliders or your grayscale sliders. So I'm just gonna keep it on the color wheel because I like being able to, like, select the inner color and then adjust the hue and saturation on the outside. Um, here you'll be able to see the opacity as well, which is basically how kind of like transparent, um, or not transparent your element is when it's filled with color. If you look below that, you'll see quick colors, these air just the colors that you were recently using. And then, if you could, if you click on swatches, you'll be able to access your Pantone's watches, which is a fantastic option. I have a panto book that I like to use. I'm so being able to find these in here is great so that it allows for color consistency, especially when it comes to printing. Ah, I can't always be very, very detailed with the color when we're looking at things on the Web, because different monitors might show different colors differently. But for printing, this is a fantastic option to use. If you click on it again, it'll kind of bring it back into your sidebar below. That is your stroke studio, and this is basically if you're going Teoh use, for example, your vector brush and you create a stroke. You can adjust the with that stroke using this little section. You could also change it to a dotted stroke can also change it to know stroke. You can also change the different types of brushes that you USA's well, but we'll look at that in a moment. So right underneath that is where the brushes are. So if you're gonna use, let's click on that little trash can I Cancer can delete it. If we go to our brush tool a gun and we click on our brush studio. What you'll see is you have all kinds of brushes already pre loaded into the program, which is fantastic. They have a wide variety. There's pencil brushes that kind of give the fact of that traditional medium. Let's pick a few that we can look at you Exume, and you can see it kind of has, like that rougher edge. And then if you scroll down, there's some that give you more texture. A. Really, like a lot of these brushes to kind of give the digital artwork a little bit more of a traditional feel. Now, if you click on the use with your move tools, you can also then go back and delete them using your little trash icon if instead of one. If instead of deleting them, you want to just double click with your fingers onto your screen, it'll undo. So that's a quick little shortcut. Um, you also have washes. I'll change the color of this so you can get a better idea of what this looks like. So it just goes a really beautiful, more traditional off fact. With these brushes, there is also dry media. There's engraving, there's watercolors, acrylics, inks, markers. There's tons and tons of options, which are really can appreciate, and I really enjoy working with. I'm mostly work with inks and with pencils. And then, um, I might use, um, wash brushes for filling, um, or markers for filling. Or I might just do more or less stylized flat fills without using the brushes and just kind of like filling the shape directly underneath the brush studio is your layer studio will be working in this a lot. Each of your art boards will show up as a layer. We will be creating a new art board which will pop up as a second layer. But I just kind of want to go through these. So you get a better understanding of how the layers work similar to what you might see in something like Photoshopped. I'm layers work almost like the sound. You're leering things on top of each other, so if you lay or something on top of another item, you're likely not to see that. So keep that in mind as you're layering colors and shapes. As we're working on this first print, if you click on your layer options, you can see things like whether or not you want it to be visible. So just so we can see a sample of this, I'm gonna add a layer out of act earlier. I'm gonna fill it with a shape. Come on, I'm going to add another layer, and I'm gonna fill it with another shape. If I go to my shape bun and I hold down on it with my finger, I'll get this pop up with all the different actual shapes that you have access to. And of course, you could make other shapes besides this using the pencil. But if you're looking for something quick and simple and easy, this is a great option. So I'm gonna select that cloud shape, and I am going to recover it so that it's something else that is easy to see. And if we look at this in our layers, palette will see that the little cloud is on top of the square, so we're able to see it now. If we take our finger and hold down on that cloud layer and we drag it below the square, we're gonna see the outline. But if we click outside of it, it's going to be underneath now. It will be invisible behind that square. Now, if we click on it and we drag it back to the top again, it is now visible. So just kind of getting a better idea of how the layers functions work and why they're important toe. Look at um, What you can also do is you can play with the layer options. You can, um, increase or decrease the opacity. You can change the layer style. So, like, right now, we have it on a normal. But if we hit something like multiply or color burn, it's gonna darken based on the color beneath it and same thing with light. And it's gonna light in the color based on the color beneath it. Um, but for now, we're just gonna keep it at normal. You can also make the layer visible or invisible. So if we click on the little eye icon, it will turn off the layer and you will no longer be able to see it returned. The I the layer back on, we can click on the I or we can go back to the layer and click that little check mark. That's to the right of it that allow you to view it as well. We can also group certain elements. So, for example, we select the move tool, and I click on something. It's just gonna move that one item. But say, for example, we want these elements together. What we can do is press on your screen of one finger. If you dragged from the outside of your arberg over, it will select both items and allow you to select more than one item. Basically, select all of them together, and then we can go back into our layers and we can select group. This will basically group those elements together, and then you can move them as a group. You can also use this kind of trick to cut out certain shapes. So let's undo everything that everything separate again. Selector first item select our second. We're not gonna Ruth. Um but instead, we're going to go up to our at it function on. Then we are gonna scroll down to where it says geometry, and we're gonna select, subtract, and it'll basically subtract that shape from the shape beneath it. And it gives us this nice, cool kind of like stamping effect, so believe below that is symbol. We will be working with that in a moment, and underneath that, we won't be working with layer of facts too much. But if you took my prior class The digital sticker making, um, affinity designer for the desktop. This is very, very similar. Your layer of faxes, basically, where you're able to add a fax two different elements within your layers, you could add drop shadows at outlines. You can use overlays, ingredient overlays. Beneath that, you'll have your adjustments options. So if you're wanting to add it photos or revise colors, you can use thes, but we won't be working in this too much today. The little that is your tax tools on here, you're able to at it fonts and add text and play with the character positioning and typography and the spacing and things like that within your file. So if use affinity to designer for graphic design and things like that, they have a full functioning, um, typography section here in the iPad app, which is fantastic. Beneath that is the transform tool. We will be using the transform tool very, very frequently today on the last two options below that, we won't be touching on too much, but that's a navigator student history studio kind of tracks your movements and how you've been working in the app What I want to go to next, though, is the top left hand toolbar on. We'll be looking at the document toolbar and the edit toolbar. So if we click on the little page, it has, like, a dog earmark corner that will give you your document toolbar, um, or your documents studio. Here, you're able to resize documents you're able to export files. This is where you'll save files you can print directly from the APP. Here, you can place images. Um, you can add an art board like what we're going to do in a moment. You can add things like snapping air grids. Next to that is your at its studio. If you click on this, this is where you can do things like cut copy, paste elements we can add, subtract, intersect shapes and things like that so much what I showed you earlier on were able to select all group on group. All convert shapes to curves, expand your strokes and you can adjust your film owed whether you're doing something like winding or alternate, we're not really gonna be touching very much on this will be mostly focusing on things like the cut copy paste options. And then, perhaps, if you wanted to, you could play with the geometry, a swell adding and subtracting and intersecting shapes. Next to this, you'll see three other options. You have your designer pixel and export personas. Currently, we are in the affinity designer persona. But if you click the next when you're pixel persona, you'll get options that you might see in something like affinity photo op. But today, primarily, we're going to be using the designer persona just because it's a little bit easier to get used to the program. And I want to make sure that you can get a handle on the elements before you start jumping into other personas.
5. Setting Up Your Art Board: Now I want to get us started on setting up for our board to begin designing and creating our repeat pattern. Let's go back to our designer gallery. We are going to create a new document on the document creation page. So we hit the plus button, select you document, and then we're gonna change from points The pixels I'm and you're going to create an art board size that is 2000 by 2000 pixels at a 300 DP i dp eyes dots per inch. That's basically our resolution. We are going to keep the orientation as ISS, and then we are gonna make sure we select create art board, and then we are going to hit. Okay, Once we're in the document, we're gonna take two fingers and pinch your screen in to kind of zoom out and driver art bird over to the left, and then we're gonna go into our documents menu, and we are gonna tap on art boards. So once we're there, we're going to drag our stylist across the background to create another our board Don't stress. We can go into our transform studio on the right hand side. Remember? You can click the little question mark. It'll pop up all the names of the different elements. It's on the right hand side. We're gonna go down to the Transform studio and we are going to resize this so that the dimensions are exactly double our original art board, which was 2000 by two thousands. We wanted to be 4000 by 4000 and this allows us to create kind of like a live preview. And if you do something similar to what I just did, I, like, went to drag my finger across his zoom back out so you could see both, but instead it accidentally created our board, just doubled like take two fingers and tap on the screen toe. Undo. So now we'll see. The left hand art board is our bird. One the right hand. Our borders are burnt too. This is gonna be our life Preview of what are actual repeat will look like and everything that we put on our board. One will basically show up on our board too. But we have a process to get to that point. So what you want to do is we're gonna create a rectangle on art board one. So on the lower left hand side, right above your type tool, you're going to select the rectangle tool, and we're going to create a rectangle that goes over our board. One, um, you can change the color to whatever you want. I'm just gonna make it something easy for you to see. So I'm picking this teal blue. Make sure your fill and your stroke are there. Same. And then I'm gonna go back down to my transform tool to make sure that my rectangle is the are. My square is the exact same size as the square of my art board. So we'll go to my dimensions and will change this to 2000 and will change the height to 2000. I'm not. If we go to our position, we want to make sure that they're both at 00 so that they're in the upper left hand corner on this Basically places it exactly centered on the art board and then take her Silas, click outside to de Select. Now what we're gonna do is create a symbol. This symbol is what allows us to kind of create a preview of what our repeat will look like an art board to so to create a symbol, we're gonna make sure that our swear that we've created a selected and we're going to go to the symbol studio and this pulls up our symbol menu. So we're gonna do is making sure that that erecting or that square is still selected on the art board. We're going to add a symbol from selection. To do that, you'll click on that little hamburger menu, and we're going to select add symbols from selection. Then what we're gonna do is we're gonna hold down using our finger or our stylists. I'm gonna wait for the pop up. It says copy and we're going to copy it, and then we're gonna select are poor, too. And then you're gonna hold your finger down on your screen and select paste on. We're gonna do this three times after this so that we have a total off four squares and basically this is gonna fill our square here. The floor blocks are basically the floor corners of the art board, and we're going to use now the transform studio to make sure that each square is exactly in the corner. The position should be 00 for black 1 2000 0 for Bach to and so on and so forth. So we're kind of going around in a clockwise motion to move these squares, and then we're going to move the next one over to 2000 for Axe. I'm going to make sure our wise at zero, and then we're going to select the last one, and we're gonna move it. 2 2000 for acts and 2000 for why? And it's going to drag it down to that lower right hand corner. Now, if you're noticing you have little white lines, just make sure that your why markers are at zero for your upper sections. Now, what we're gonna do is we're gonna test it. So we're gonna select art board one. And basically, this is the art board where you'll be doing all of your pattern building. You want a select a brush, and then we can just draw something. So change the color of your fill and your stroke to whatever you'd like it to be. I'm gonna do white just so that it's something bright that pops. And if you want to zoom in, Ah, bit again. Take both fingers And instead of pinching in, you're gonna kind of, like push outwards and it'll zoom in. Now I'm going to select a vector paint brush tool, and I already have my color selected, and I'm gonna create a shape on my board here. I'm gonna pick a brush that is a watercolor brush, and then I'm gonna go into my stroke, and I'm gonna make sure I increase the width of this so that it's something big and easily visible. And I'm just going to start painting in the center. So once we've done that, you'll notice that nothing is popping up on our board to The reason for this is because we have to drag that shape in the layers panel to the symbol layers so that it has that glowing orange line beside it that we see here in the layers function. So we're gonna take our cell is click on the element in our layers were gonna dragon so that it kind of goes right on top of that symbol square. And then you'll notice that all of the elements now pop up and repeat in exactly the same place, um, Onley, the elements that are on the symbols later on the art board one will show up on our board too. So keep that in mind. Make sure you double check your layers panel. If you ever have any trouble with, like the preview not showing your elements, it's likely because it's not underneath your symbol element. So rather than basically repeating this process every single time, every single time that I create a pattern, I like to use this document as my master document. And then I just copy it any time I want to start a new one. So just go back in and delete your tough shape. Select your move tool, click on your shape and then select the little garbage pail in the lower left hand corner and it'll delete it. I'm that we're gonna name this. If we hit the back button in your upper left hand toolbar, we're gonna get back to our affinity designer gallery, and we have our untitled file. We're gonna select the hamburger menu on the lower right hand side of my file, and we're gonna select rename and then we can rename this pattern Master Doc and I'm gonna list 2000 so that I know it's a 2000 by 2000 pixel. And then if I want to repeat this as we're going to do for the next process process of creating our repeat, I'm going to select the little hamburger menu again. I'm gonna hit duplicate, and then I'm going to rename it. And then I'm just gonna rename it pattern File one, because you're going to be making four of these for your final class project and then hit, okay? And then you can just click on it whenever you want to open it up and then you'll be able to work on it here.
6. Creating a Repeat Pattern Using the Pen Tool: All right, So now that we've created our master file for our repeat, let's jump into the process of actually creating our repeat. So now that we have created our master art board, let's open it back up. And we're gonna actually start to build out our repeat pattern. So to create your repeat elements, you could just play around with creating some shapes using the either the vector pencil or the raster brushes. Or in this case, what I'm showing you, which is probably the easiest way to start with, is just creating some geometric shapes that can flow and fit together really easily. So I'm gonna use the pen tool to create some simple geometric shapes and just basically kind of fill out my pattern shape as I go. So remember that you have to drag each shape to the symbols layer so that it has that glowing orange line beside it, so that it shows up in your test. Our board, what I like to do first is designed the edges of my repeat and then basically moved inwards to finish filling out the actual canvas. I'll use the pen tool to create my elements, and I'll either put one element on the left edge of the campus or in the bottom to create a shape with the pun tool, you'll basically take your silence. And then you can just use your stylist a tap on your screen to create a geometric form. Once you've done that, you need to make sure that you close it. You'll want to create a closing line from your last point to the very first point, so it closes the shape. Once you've done that, as I've shown before, you can just take your finger. Hold down on your shape and you get a pop up. Select copy. Hold down with your finger on the screen and select pace, and it'll paste it right on top. And then what we need to do is go to the Transform studio and then depending on which side you started. So if we started on the left hand side, we're going to be moving our exposition. But if you started on the bottom edge or the top edge will be started with our white position. So in this case, though, we're gonna start with the exposition and that instead of changing the number, I'm just gonna select Plus, and then I'm gonna type in 2000 which is the size of my art board. It will move that object that I've just copied and pasted directly to the exact same spot that the original element is. But on the opposite side of the art board, we're going to repeat the same process around the edges of the canvas. And since you're typing plus 2000 on the access on the X axis to move something to the right, you'll type negative 2000 to remove something to the left and the same thing. When it comes to the UAE access, we're moving up and down. You'll do plus 2000 to move down, and you'll do negative 2000 or minus 2000 to move up. Keep in mind that if you put anything on a corner, it has to be duplicated three times and then moved to each of the four corners, using the transform tool in the exact same way that we've just done with this original element. Once you move each element into place, you can group it with apparent element by swiping each of the layers and then tapping group at the top of the layers menu, as I showed earlier. Um, when we're looking through the interface of affinity designer that way you can easily move elements up and down off to write without affecting your repeat lee out. And once you finished filling out your edges, you can then start to fill the center. I like to fill the repeat with shapes and filler elements like lines kind of working in like a jigsaw puzzle style for this particular repeat pattern just so that it kind of gives it that fun abstract geometric feel. You want to play around with the placement and maybe even the colors that you're using so that you can get the repeat toe Look exactly how you want it to, um, and you will essentially be using our board to to see if your repeat this space nicely and you could make adjustments on our poor one, as you need as you're working through it. When you're ready to export, you're gonna tap the documents menu and then tap export. And on the export page, you're gonna choose art bird one as the area, and PNG is your file type, or you can select J Pack whatever is easiest or whatever you need. Um, and then you'll select a save location. And now that you're done, will move on to testing are repeat in a bigger document.
7. Creating a Repeat Pattern Using the Brush Tool: now that you've made your geometric shapes using the pencil, I want to play with using the brush tool. So on the left hand side of your workspace, you'll have your different brushes and different tools that you can utilize right above the pencil is the actual vector brushing. Once you click on that, on the right hand side, you'll see the brush studio in the brush studio. You'll be able to choose the different types of brush finishes that you'd like to use. Typically, when you pull it up, you'll see acrylics. But there's watercolor. There's pencil, there's pen. There's all kinds of options. I'm just gonna go for a water color choice. Um, I'm in a select basic water color five. And then I'm gonna go into my stroke studio, and I'm going to increase the stroke all the way up to about 79.6, and then I'm just gonna make some shapes. You can move it around. You can do deal with it. I'm just gonna make blocky shapes. And just like before, whatever you do to the left hand side, you have to do to the right hand side. Whatever you do to the top you have to do to the bottom. So I'm gonna copy my shape, pace it in place, and then I'm gonna use my transform tool to go to my ex access and then hit plus 2000 so it takes it directly to the right hand side of my sheep. I'm gonna go ahead and do this same process, basically filling in my edges and then bringing shapes inside, filling this shape in and keep in mind if you're noticing your shapes are not coming up on your art board. Remember, You have to place those shapes right on top of your symbol layers and swipe right on lonelier, and you can continue to swipe right on all the layers below it. You should be able to select multiple layers and then you couldn't drag them down to the symbol shape so that everything will show up on art board too. So I'm just gonna go through and continue to fill in my shape using the brush so that I have more of an organic, more traditional art feeling. Repeat
8. Creating Backgrounds & Exporting for Use in Spark AR: way are done, Cree aiding our patterns. What I like to do is test it out. So I'm gonna set up a new document. And in this case, I'm just gonna do Ah, print file. Um, I'm gonna select a five 300 d p i and then I'm gonna hit color to RGB 16 because we're gonna be using this for our actual background tester, and then we're gonna hit, okay? And I make this large because it's always better to make something bigger than smaller. And I am actually going to copy and paste this art board three more times so that we have four total for our four prints. And this is where we're gonna test everything just to make sure the prince look nice. And we're gonna fill these items up so that we can test them out on the computer. So in order to basically create a Phil, I am going to create a shape he's in the rectangle tool, and in this case, it's OK if it goes off the corners because we want to make sure this whole shape is filled . We're gonna scroll down on our left hand toolbar to our full tool. And what you'll see at the bottom is that this little pop up menu shows up. If you go left to right, it allow you to change the type. But we're in change. Ours to map. Basically, this is what allows us to place an image into our file. So we're gonna go into affinity designer where we saved our background. I'm going to select it, and then you'll see it fills the actual shape with the the pattern that we've created. Now what we want to do is resize this down. So what's nice is you could take these little nah jewels, and you can resize it and turn it around and, you know, basically place the repeat wherever you'd like it to be. So since I'm kind of creating these trippy feeling geometric shapes, I'm having a little bit smaller, so it feels more or less like an optical illusion. Ah, we're gonna do the exact same thing to all the other airports that we could do is we can just select that that rectangle again. I'm unp aced it and then this time we're just gonna change the bit map file to something else. And once you're done with this Once you filled all of your our boards with your two geometric and then you're too late Brush style patterns. What we'll do is we're gonna want to export each of these art boards as J pegs so that we can upload them to spark a are. And if you notice all of your art, words are named the same. I'm just to make things easier. What you can do is you can go into your layers function, select the layer that you're working on. Um, so in this case, art board, too. And what we'll do is we're gonna rename them so that it's easier for us when we're exporting. So we're going to select art the next art board you concede selected because there's a darker blue line around it. You're gonna go into your layers options and then you're gonna still lack the name by just clicking on it with your stylist. We're gonna change us toe, aren't bored, too on, then hit, okay. And then go back to the next one Art for three. So we're gonna export. And then just like what we did with the pattern tile we're gonna export as Okay, well, export this as a J peg and then go to file name, rename it to Pattern one and then in your area instead of whole document. You're going to select Art Board one and then we're gonna hit. Okay, We're just going to save it on your iPad for ease of use so that we can find it easier when we're goto, export it to our computer export. The 2nd 1 J peg. We name it to pattern to on that instead of whole document. We're going to select art board too, and then hit. Okay, save it to your iPad men run and go to Export Art Board three J peg. Rename everything into pattern three. It's your area. Should be art board three and then hit. Okay, David to your iPad. And then your last one export J. Paige rename it to pattern floor. Hyman we're gonna do I poured for and then we're gonna hit. Okay, save it to your iPad. Now that everything saved into our ipad, we're gonna go into her file system. It's that little file folder. And then if you select on my ipad, you should be able to find all of your files. So pattern, one pattern to pattern, three pattern floor. So what we're gonna do is we're going to select each of these items by hitting select and then tapping on each of the elements that we want to share and you're gonna see these little blue check marks. And then in the lower left hand side of your file system, you'll see share duplicate, moved elite more. We're gonna select share, and we're going to select air drop, and then we're gonna air drop it to ourselves. So in this case, I'm air dropping it to my laptop. I'm done. When it's done, it'll say, sent. I'll hit, done exit out of all of these and now we can move into spark A are
9. The Basics of Spark AR & Building Your Filter: all right, so now that we exploited our files to our desktop or laptop for use in the software and accident we want to do is open up spark Air Studio. So I have it down here in my doc. I'm in a click on it and it's gonna pop up. Once it opened, you'll see this broccoli. Our studio interface on this is kind of like the gallery on the left hand side to see the menu. With a few accidents like create New, you can select recent projects trope in a specific file on. And then there's also actually for learned, which has some fantastic to toilet that I highly suggest you check out. If you really enjoy Hiscox in Wana, dive you even deeper into the software. To the right of that, you'll see a bunch of different options. It's really cool is that they make this really user friendly, and they have a slew of templates already pre made that you can just pop in assets and you can export a file and you're good to go, Um, specifically, things like changing your color, having a space separation like glasses or like in the case of working out background. You could use this but actually want to take you through the whole entire process, step by step, so you get a better understanding of the interface and how the whole process works. So we're going to start by selecting Black Project. Once we select blank product, we will be in this park air studio work space in the centre of you'll see kind of like a screen that shows a face that's kind of like a template ID face that's moving left right up , down. If you click on where it is like iPhone eight, it'll give you drop down of different devices that you could test for. I'm gonna test for iPhone X. That's what I have. But you want to make sure that your files are large enough that it will work for any of these size devices. So that's why I had you guys wait a and 1/2 by 11 file so that it can go all the way up to what you might use with. I've had from and on the left minutes you'll see on your workspace. You'll see video options so that you can play because, as you can see how you were military works as you create the loops for it. You'll also have the ability to test on the device. Upload your file Once you're done, you could acting's from a library assets, and then you can also report any bugs. You also you working mainly in your scenes and your layers. And then here you'll have your final option to consider is accelerating. Package will be mostly working with file you so we can see the patch editor, which we'll talk about soon and project so on the left. Inside, you'll have your scenes panel and your assets panel. And then on the right hand side is your inspector we're gonna be doing essentially is creating a filter that basically allows you to attack to change to multiple backgrounds. So this days we're gonna be using before haven't repeats that you created, and we're gonna find them in the background of the youth or on insist Oreja or it's a grab , basically tack their finger on the screen in order to get the patterns to have rotate through. And they could select the one that they want where they take a selfie or shared video. Well basically be building up background assets that were going to use the packs editor to create, like the animation slow were rotating through the different backgrounds. We'll also added instructions of state tax to change so that people know how to interact and use your filter as it's loaded on. To me, it's a story. Instagram platform. So the start if we want to make sure we are all the camera in the sea and panel basically ready, start recommending a segmentation mask touched her. This texture basically separates the four rounds with the user in it from their background . So what we need to do first is we need to add a rectangle so quiet in the paint off you'll see a little section that says at objects. So click on that and you can either scroll down and search for a tingle. Or you could just type in the search far rectangle, and it's Papa who went click on that pit insert and then we are gonna copy. It's open, Nancy. If you're on a Mac Joel, see if you're on a PC on then we're going to fix this five times, and what we're gonna do is we're gonna read. Nate, This we're gonna call this 1st 1 are foreground. Underscore uterus. And you know, this is like the person. And then after that, we're gonna rename the rest background, one background to found. Three in that RAV four. We do this to help us differentiate between the different patterns in the different backgrounds that were going to be looking. Now, I'm gonna go into the latest function. We're gonna rename this first layer that's purple were round, and then we're gonna add a new layer, and we're gonna need this one background. What size is that? We can use this functions on a switch. Weeks Meade. What assets were associating with the foreground, or so we're gonna go back to the scene panel and we're gonna select background one. This is a click on it. Old ship. It's a look back on four so that all of from are selected and now over in our and Specter panel, we're gonna but it'll hair section under properties. I'm worried that click on the drop down and been switched on from foreground to background . So now we know that everything with campus that's associated with these items are unity in our back. Then you can go and click on foreground just to chapters and season in your properties of your here. It should be selected out of work. Now we are gonna go back, Francine panel and we're gonna click a camera. And we are gonna work out of separating the user out from the background. So basically, when recreating what called a segmentation mask structure So we are the legs to click on texture extraction on the earnest with on segmentation. And then what's nice is once we have those and you'll see that there pulled in, asked assets underneath our pictures, not going to go back to foreground. And we're gonna select all of the files foreground, including our backgrounds, so that we can resize the viewfinder. So you click on for ground user full chip pick on your last background, and then we're gonna go over into your inspector panel and weren't says size. You'll see 101 100 we want to do is we want to resize everything so that it fills the wit and it feels the height off whatever device someone might be working. So if you click on that 1st 100 in the drop down your teeth, so we'll lift click on it. It doesn't change the first time on this. Click on it again. You'll see it goes across the screen and a black and white checkered form, and then go to the next one where it says 100 select will fight and it will fill the fully higher spring. And now let's just select foreground and we're gonna add a material earlier for that. So we'll bring your inspector a panel you're gonna hit last. Next, the material on that you need to rename this material the material zero foreground center. And then we want to change the cedar types bomb standard black. And then what we need to do for this material is that we need to add a second station. So underneath our shooter properties underneath diffuse you something. This is capture. We're gonna click on the little drop down the new on. We're gonna select cameras, texture. I'm an underneath where it says, Elsa, you want to track mark that box on then for your texture within a now select person segmentation texture. So now basically, we have a texture behind our foreground in our foreground in our background have been separated. What's nice is you can adjust your person second stationmaster tucked shirt so that you can have a nice cleaner masking around the person states. So I don't change the softness. I m to bring it down so that it's a little bit harder. Um, so it gets more of a clean line around the person's head and then I'm gonna bring my mask size. If you bring it up, you could see it gives you like, more buffer room. But I don't I don't like that. In fact, what I want to do is bring down just a bit. Won't play to five bicycle walk Nice for what we're trying to do and that when you have a nice, clean mask so that the person will look like they're no floating around and nothingness Pippins the background. Now we're gonna start mate material layers for our background. So select background one from then in your inspector menu. But if a split click on the little plus icon next materials all right, agreed in your material, we're gonna rename this material background one so that we know what's associated with that specific background. Now let's click on backgrounds. You for the hit cross next to the materials in our inspector menu. Read it Created new material. You need that one background to really go to background. Free it plus tax store materials. Create new material. Rename it to background three. I'm not ready. Select background four on the new their campus intercede panel in our inspector area we're gonna select plus icon. Next materials indicate a new material and we're gonna really need that one background for so now we want to do is for each of these materials we want to give them attached. But so for background wondering it underneath our assets, not under the scene but our athletes. Now you're gonna click on in the two of the background, one on the insurance, Dr Cannell with change or share tights of flash online, and you're in a select texture and we're gonna actually click choose file on that of the artless associate. Our first pattern with background one. Everything else can be kept the same. Really click out Fox and you are going to select hammer texture for this. And then we're gonna go to backgrounds to under materials within a change or a texture to our second. Better. Now go to background three changer shater type flat and then choose your file. Next it fracture. Select your pattern free manana. We're going to go to back on four. Change your shader types of flat now, then choose your file and choose powder and four for your not structure. Now, we should be able to see our capture in the background. But the issue is is that they're all currently showing at the same time. So we're gonna do something to fix this really quickly. So for each of your backgrounds, now, in order to view them we're gonna do is gonna go back through and read a select each one with a click on Alfa, and then we're gonna keep your capture to camera capture, and then everything else can you left the same. So now what we want to do is add our interaction. So basically, the idea is that when we click on the spring, it's gonna school through agent a different pattern backgrounds So added interactions. We have to open up our packs. Editor. So gonna selective you show high half editor and bring a double click inside of the patch editor area, and then it's gonna pop up all these different options. What we're gonna do is in the search. Barbie are going to look for a screen tap. Do you just type in screen tap? Were your second option click on it. So that's hardly didn't blue and the black cat catch. Then you can just click on your little icon and drive it over to the loss of that house moved out to be filled out the patches and then you're gonna click on the little Heroes, Etc. Tack when a drag one out and we're gonna create another, um, catching here and we're gonna look for something called Counter. So you're gonna click on that at catch, and it basically goes through accounts that were selecting. So in this case, five, um, update this you can change. It just depends on how many assets you have for each of your backgrounds. In our case, we have a mutual, which is zero, and then we have had a 1234 So we have a maximum comes put five, but you can increase your kikwete depending underneath. Now I'm gonna click on the little arrow, gonna pull it out, We're gonna create another pats. Then we want to look for something. Fall equals exactly So basically what this does, it's just a function that tracks to see two numbers are the same. And if they are, it allows the patch to complete a different function or the next step in the whole process . And since we have four patterns, we are going to create war patches with So you could at patch on what's nice with these, you can also use your cuts on copying case. So I'm gonna copy and paste this remark time, so we have four total. I'm just going to drive this 1st 1 up of it and then with it highlighted, you know, it's highlighted because it's surrounded and blue. You'll hit command, see if you're on a Mac control. See if you're on a PC, haven't command V or control V Paste remarks times. Now we're gonna go back to our canvas, and we're gonna select our backgrounds one through four, like on your 1st 1 Make sure highlighted in blue hold ship with gone back on for and I have all of them selective. And then over in your inspector panel, you'll see something beautiful. The properties function that's a visible. I'm going to click the little circle with a rolled to the left of it so that it skylights in yellow and ceramics life on it on this basically, add the's functions to our patch editor. So, you know, once you organized in the order that you want, you were back. Cross appear. I'm missin a going order background for background three backgrounds, you and then background one. And what you're gonna do Not since you're gonna connect each of these. So the little great hero in your equals exactly Boxer just connected to the arrow in your background canvas and what we want to change our equals. Exactly. Two is the number of the order of our taps for our background soap background one. It's going to be the first half background to your second half background. Three. Your third tap in background for your fourth past, Captain Tampa Tampa. Now we want to do is we want Teoh Toughness Op Assiut The functions are working properly when I click on our hamburger Manu in our preview function and we're gonna select simulate touch. Essentially, we're gonna click on the straining to see if it works, and it is's working just as we planned. So this black one is basically that the scent of show. No background, your 1st 1 there sucking long there on fourth. Um, So what I want to do now, though, is include instructions No, to interact with this filter. So do not run the Adam instruction patch. So in order to add instructions in our patch editor our point to add custom and trucking store back, um, you can either use previous ones or you can use custom. We are gonna use some custom once, but that already included in the past options. So we have to do is go to our project in the menu bar. None were to select edit properties. And you want to do is we want to click on capabilities and you want to add capabilities, and we're gonna search for instructions. So we'll click on instructions we're gonna select insert under instruction. You want Don't like automatic instruction. Let's click on custom instructions. So you're gonna select a little drop down menu is we're gonna select instruction for use By hitting that little plus icon, we are gonna search for tap to change. I would click on that and then we're gonna select insert And don't worry about those exclamation mark. It's because we haven't added them into our oceans stuff yet in our path. Predator. Once we've done this, we're gonna hit, done, and you'll notice little pop up. This is your project contains a capability to not being used. That is your instructions. So to do this to Alice in, we're gonna go to the device area that we're going to school down to instructions. You can click on little drop down arrow and we're gonna select create. And then we're gonna click on instructions on opening. And basically, this is what allows you to see instructions right when you open up the filter in the app so that the person knows what they're working with, how to interact with the filter. You'll see the run time. You'll see less than the idea. Is that the show for five seconds? A soon as this project or the soon of this Solters open it alone for five seconds on, then it'll turn off. So that gives people enough time to find agreed that they have to tap a sprain to change the background. We want to make sure it's enabled in the things you already have their token in there on. Then what we can do now is we can test it.
10. Testing Your Background Filter: So you want to simulate touch again? We'll click on it, go through it, make sure all of our conscience were. And then we're gonna school down to the left hand side. We don't want to test this on a job bites, so you could either send it to the app or open spark AARP near on a device on the connected device to your computer. Um, I'm just gonna send it to my instagram camera or I'm gonna still left center in suburban camera. And it's basically going to give me a week that I can done test on my phone, So I'm gonna open this link on my phone. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna click of a test like I mean a copy only. And then I'm gonna go into my notes. You just so that I can just air dropped length records to my cell phone. So I'm in a hit new I'm not Piece it in. I'm gonna do file here. Their god, You can also just email it to yourself if you don't have accessible math or teardrop and then I'm gonna open up phone, give you the option to select my phone. I should be able to see testes on Instagram
11. Loading Your Filter to Spark AR Hub: once you tested, everything works. Well, it looks like it's supposed to. We're gonna upload black on it. What you're gonna do is you're gonna publish new effect, and you're gonna do you want to make sure that the file size meets all requirements? Your capabilities meet all requirements long as you have to recheck. Maxie should be good to go. And then you can select upload, and it will upload to spark a our club. Once it's sent, uploading the browser on your computer should automatically open, sparking our hub. And this is where you go over the whole entire process of actually up building. So, lunch on the top, there are a few things you want to do. You want to name your product If you see a like a letter next to something with usually informational Tippett, that is helpful. Um, first electric platform. In this case, I want to use Instagram. I'm not. What I'm gonna do is I'm in a name. Uh, my my filter. So promoting the this one trippy few metrics for the category I am gonna select. You want us? Look category that makes says, um, for ours, I think surroundings make more sense in terms of the background that we're creating. And then you want to add a few words that people might search, like geometric. Hey, be modern. Anything that could come to mind your owner is whatever account you have associate in. So I have my business associate it because a lot of these cultures that are creating relate back to the artwork that I create for my creative studio. I'm gonna make sure the instagram account that it should be loading to a selected in this case Medalist if he had created on the two big things I've noticed that will help your chances in terms of getting your filters approved is having a demo video. And I come both of these half guidance. You want to showcase your fox features and capability, and you will capture your video directly from instagram. So when you're testing your filter have been highly suggest that you use the video function to record while you're doing the test rotations through your culture. When you sent it during your tough on device, and then you can say that file to your phone and then you can upload that video here. You don't want to use Sokoli the over forties of images. You don't want to bought a fire whom a regular video you don't want to find any other icons of buttons after reporting, just simply strictly used the video directly from the script, capturing and showcasing your facts. Then you want to make sure you add an icon. This is a 200 by 200 pixel icon. It could be one of the backgrounds or something that kind of you know, showcases what this a fact is and does so for me because I make service pattern designs. I'm just going to use one of the, um, repeats that I have in the collections and I think is the prettiest of them all. What? Everything is more eye catching. What's nice is they also have show guidance here. You don't want to include your fax and a and you don't want to include your user name, and you don't want to use too much talks. Continue some tax, but for me, I think it's just fun. Teoh, leave it as asses clean in it. They also have some. If you search for a are cubs the tutorials music that they have some templates, but all include that in the resource is section off the class that he conducted those templates and use exactly what they have said that you know that your side requirements are exactly what they're looking for. And then you want a job, sir. Visibility, settings of man. If there any instructions, I highly suggest you add some some written pieces here. Basically, you want to describe higher affects work what it does, how to use it. So look at this attack to change. Make sure you list that, in fact, 2000 words on then, depending on it, you have a personal account. Or if you're like me and you have a brandy to count the business account, you will have to select that. This is a promotional type status item that you can. Yes, Um, it what you're done. If you're not ready to hit, submit. Save on. Don't say the draft for you, But if you are ready, make sure you have your video. Make sure you have. I've found Make sure you have instructions for the reviewer on that hit submit, and it could take up to 10 days. But I've seen that it could be a last picture as well
