About This Class

Welcome to our fifth SOLIDWORKS Class covering Materials and Mass Properties. This class is the first of our SOLIDWORKS Class Series which consists of 12 short classes ranging from 15 mins to 1.5 hrs. The series will take you from knowing nothing about SOLIDWORKS to the Certified Professional Level (CSWP).In this specific class, you will learn the following:

  • How to apply materials to parts in SOLIDWORKS.
  • How to find/view the properties of the materials in different units of measurement.
  • How to find the mass properties for your parts.
  • How to change the unit of measurement when viewing the mass properties.

1. Class Series Intro: welcome to our solid works class. My name is taste here and I will be leading you through this class. I myself have been an avid, solid works user for the last eight years. I have also been working in training and instructional design for the last five years. Combining those two experiences we designed and produced the best solid work course there is. This is, of course, as testified by the 4000 plus students we trained on using solid works. Today we're super excited to bring this training to you. This class is a part of our larger solid Works class series. This series consists off 12 short classes or sections to take you from knowing nothing about solid works to the 35 associate level C S W A. Siri's will then continue to take you from the certified associate level to the certain parts professional level CS WP Each of those classes has its own standalone learning objectives, which you can learn in the description. You can also download the contents outline for the whole class Siris in the download section. This is in case he would like to jump from one class to another. We will be using the learning by doing approached to conduct this class. So whenever we're learning something new will be directly using it to build something with it, be it a sketch apart. A drawing or an assembly way will walk you through a step by step to make sure you understand any new concept we introduce. We will also provide you with project work, reinforce the skills we learn together. So who should take this class series? Basically, anyone wanting to get started with solid works for wanting to advance his or her solid work skills toe an advanced level. Those could be engineers, designers, makers or hobbyist. So if you fall in those categories, this class Siri's has something for you. You don't need any prior knowledge to start the series. You just need to be ready to learn, so let's get started. 2. The Download Section: in this video, we're going to tell you about the download section. So with every one of our classes, we have a download section which includes files for you to download. Those files will help you follow up in our lectures and help you gain hands on experience which we designed this course about. So here we are, in our first solid works class, class, war, interface and navigation. And if I go to the about section, you'll have information about the class, the learning objectives and down below them. You will have the down low section on this download section Link will basically take you to our Dropbox, where we have prepared or the downloads that goes along this class off I click on the link , open a new top and take us to our Dropbox. And here in the drop box, we have Class one interface and navigation, and they have two folders for I switched to the list display. I'm gonna have two folders as you've seen earlier. One cos lecture Fife on the other companies lecture seven on the one at the beginning. Indicates the class numbers 1.5 indicates that this is for a class number one, which is interface and navigation on a lecture number five, which is the command bar, canvas and design tree. And the easiest way to download those folders is to go to the top right corner and you'll see a download option. So if I click on that and then click on direct download, the browser will automatically download all those folders in a say file. And here they are. If I click on this, you will have to folders for lectures number five and seven, and each of those folders would have additional materials that supplement learning for that particular lecture. So that was all about download section. Now get yourself ready for the next video lecture where we would actually start presenting instructional materials. 3. Intro to materials and Mass Properties : welcome to the mass property section. In this section, we will start exploring materials on mass properties for our models with making objects. In real life, we have to consider what structural material to use we was. Copper, plastic, wood or steel. Also. How much with this object? Wait, What is its center off gravity? How much volume will it take? We will learn how to answer these questions in this session, so let's go ahead and start exploring mass properties. 4. Selecting Mateirals for your Parts: in this lecture, we will learn how to select materials for the parts we are modeling to show that let's go ahead and create a cube with a side off five inches. So it's like the toppling on. I will create square with a five inch side, no relation, then apply a future for five inches. Now we have a cube. Let's go ahead and try specifying a structural material for this cube. If we look at the design tree on the left, we will be able to see a point for materials. We'll be right click on it. The first choice will be at its material. So let's go ahead and click on that. Now we get this window with a long list off materials. So if I select a I s I three or four steel, you will get information about the properties off this kind of steel. You will get information like the mass density, the tensile strength, thermal expansion, acquisitions and so one. Also, you can choose what unit you want the properties to show. So currently those properties are shown in the S I unit or the system international units. We click in the stroked on menu, we can choose the English units Metrics Onda E s I unit with Mega Paschal. So if we choose the English units, you will see that the units here changes as well. Assuming we want to select this material, we can just click applying and then we close the window and you will notice that the appearance of the cube have changed in color to look more like the material we just selected. Let's try changing the material again. So we go to design tree, right click on the material on select a debt material. This time, let's go down and go to the woods materials, so expand the wood and then we can select the oak again. You get the material properties here. If you click, apply on the clothes. You're going to see that the appearance of the cube have changed to look like an oak. Also, the design tree specifies that we are using hope for this material 5. Viewing Mass Properties : in this lecture, we will learn how we can do the mass properties off the parts we create. So we have created this cube and we specified oak as a building material for it. If we go to the evaluate top, we were see about, um, cold mass properties. If we click on it, you will get some information about the model we have created. First you get the density, which is £0.2 per cubic inches. This is a density of the material, which is oak, and then the mass off the cube we created is £2.53. The volume is 1 25 cubic inches, the surface areas 1 50 square inches and the center of mass, which is 2.5 inches for axial direction, which makes sense for a cube. Let's close this and try changing the material and see what happens. So if I close this, then I changed the material. Teoh some kind off. I run that. See, we're going to go with great cast iron and click, apply and close the window. Notice the appearance of the Q have changed, just something that looks like a great cast I run. And then if we go to evaluate again and then to a mass properties going to notice the density changed to be the density off the great cast iron, which is £0.26 per cubic inches. The mass has also changed to £32.5. The volume is the same because it's the same cube surface area is the same. And also the center of mass is the same. Because we are using the same cube. No notice that everything here is in English unit. It's in pounds and inches. The units here is whatever we used as units for the documents which are shown in the bottom here we can see that we have the units as I ps inches, pounds and seconds. So if I change that to millimeters graham seconds, then I come back to this window and I select recalculate. You will notice that all the measurements have changed to grammar Cubic millimeters graham , keep it millimeters square millimeters. If I change it to meters kilogram second and then go to re calculate again, you will notice the change 6. Student Project: it is said that knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice. Now is a good time to do just that. Check out the download section and find the project work. We prepared for you for this class. After you do the project, please share your work with us under your project for this cost. In addition to the project, work with provide. Try making your own project by modeling any object you find around. And even better option is to invent your own object on model it with solid works. We're looking forward to seeing your work. 7. Class conclusion: This concludes our fifth class on materials and mass properties. Before you leave this class and move to the next, make sure you are familiar with the following points. How to apply materials toe parts in solid works. How to find. View the properties off the materials in different units of measurement. How to find the mass properties for your parts. How to change the unit of measurement when viewing the mass properties. If you do not know or ensure off any of those points, we recommend reviewing the lectures in this class again before moving to the next. 8. You are doing it! : Hey, there it is, here, here again, this class on materials and mass property was different than the other classes. We had good job on completing it. The things we covered here are simple but essential to anyone to design anything. I'm so proud of you for making it here.
