Smoky Quartz Poppies

1. Smoky Quartz Poppies: My name is Timmy. I'm Joy Cider. Okay, welcome smoking coffees in this class. I'm going to show you some simple forging techniques Were going to take six simple small disks of sterling silver and compass, um, and flare out the register for a lovely ruffled edge That will be the basis off some really lovely poppies once soldiers a civil ball in the middle. And of course, I'll show you how to do that as well. I'm going to be cutting discs out of summer sheet and also using so little snippets of it'll melt into certain silver balls to decorate the inside the poppies. 3. Smoky Quartz Poppies - equipment: the's handles I'm going to use to make the smoky courts poppies. The poppies are going to start off as discs of sterling silver sheet. I'm going to cut those out. I'm gonna hit cutters with an old hammer because it doesn't matter that that hammer picks up the marks that the steel cutters will leave on it. I'm going to use the ruler on the wire cutters obviously cut off the length of wire that I'm going to need for both. The head opens onto the ear wires. I'm going to use a round nose pliers to form a loop at the top of the head pin. Andi, I'm going to use those same pliers together with nine on your pliers on the flat. Smoky Quartz Poppies - soldering equipment: This is the soldier equipment, as I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap. On top of that on. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi the paintbrushes. What? I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work, so he was also available in a paste form, its ground up soldier that's already mixed with a flux, so you don't need a separate flux. I like to use the solder paste on projects like chains on door, so hollow beads sometimes might use it on sucking rings if I'm in a bit of a hurry, because one of the advantages sort of place is that the soldier usually stays exactly where you want it to be. Unlike the sort of Italians that can jump off as you start to heat the metal up, small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas butane gas that you use to reform cigarette lighter. At the back of the picture, you can see a so cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to forward cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans that copper oxides up. They're holding so it tightly so it can't move about as I'm cutting it on. That means that I can cut really close to the edge. So I'm just day. Now that this is only got scraps silver, I'm actually going to be cutting off bits of it to mountains, balls that would go into the center, the poppies. But it's still good practice to get into, to try and make the best use of your piece of sheet as possible. So the country goes in obviously cutting edge down, he'd have it no other way out. Pete certainly will do damage to the cutting edge on this is the fun bit. Just hitting it with a heavy hammer, small disks and thin sheets like this. It doesn't take much effort to cut the discs out, and you can see how nice and close I went to the inches. So I need two more. This looks wrong. One that would have been a piece from a steak. Now, if you're using two pieces of silver, then you do need to make absolutely certain that they are the same thickness for this project. You can use anything between about 0.52 point six, and that will work really, really nicely. But they must be the same because if they're not in the next stage, you're going to end up with different sized poppies on, like a little bit of variation, but not a massive amount of variation in the so I know that these two pieces scrap are exactly the same thickness because I rodent through the rolling mill one after the other, making sure that the rolling was such the same settings for each. So they cut the last two discs. I need out off this piece, being half a sharp edges on the scrap to I always have a first aid kit in the studio, but I'd really rather not have to use it one. So six super disks almost ready to be turned into poppies. 6. Smoky Quartz Poppies - annealing: If, like me, you're using scrap silver that you've sent through the rolling mill for this project, then you will need to kneel your disks before going any further. If you are using fresh sheets such come straight from supplier, you haven't done a hammering or rolling or anything else like that to it. Then you can actually skip this section. Assuming that is that you by your sheet ready and Neil, which is how it usually comes. However, I know that because I sent this to the rolling mill on dive, then cut discs out that they've had too much work done tooth, um, to allow me to shape thumb nicely and evenly in the next stage. So I've put a Sharpie mark on each disc because he's a very small piece of silver. It would be easy toe over. He each some, Well, someone kneeling. I definitely don't want to do that. So pretty. The Sharpie Marcon gives me good indicators to when I reached uneven temperature. When the market is virtually burnt off, that's going to be hot enough with pieces this small. The quench pots I comport the sieve. Angela's this together straight in the pickle pot where they can be cleaned up. And then I can pick the whole city onto six disks out of the pickle very easily without having to fish around in the bottom with the tweezers, trying to pick these very, very small disks up from the bottom of the pickle part. If you want to do the same and just make certain that your sieve is completely plastic don't have any metal parts in there because they will interfere with the pickle. So we just need to use a small torch for this. Yeah, he teach one up in turn. - Go . So take each one. You need to choose additional doping block that so point doing it in a really big one. It's hard to get any curve it all, but also you don't want to go to small. You won't don't want to go for a dish, for example, that is, I could find with the Reese. Well, one's hiding about somewhere and the ah, you don't want to go for one that small because although the silver still fits into it, there is too much of a distance relative to the size of the disc, too much of a distance between the bottom of the disc on the bottom, off the dish on DSO. If you were to hammer straight into that one, you'd end up with a disk that was probably a little bit creased around the edges, which we also don't want. You can use that dish for disc that size, but you would need to go through some of these dishes first of all instead. So double check. I have got back to, uh, the one that I want to use Kiss approach. There we go. That was it. That was the one I used. It just puts the dish that so The disk that has beena dish little bit being domed back in there, and it's really nice fit. So I know that that once the one that I used so I can pick one of these title disks up for this stage, you want the disc sitting ice essentially in the bottom off the dish. I'm going to be using those Hama to hit the I've never met a meat metal punch. I'm going to hold punch nice and upright. So I get a nice, even shaping because the service being a kneeled, that's all it took just a couple of hits, so basically the same, too. The other three as well is that so? That's what I'm going to do now is continue on and do the same with the last four poppies. 8. Smoky Quartz Poppies - melting the silver balls: e I want to. So the super ball in the middle off those hammered and flared out poppy shaped disks to make them look a lot more like poppies. Andi, I'm going to make Josepha balls by melting some off. The scrap silver that's left over from customers is actually sit here. I'm not going to use this bigger section here cause I might be hard to get something else out of that. But I'm going to cut. It's using snips so I can hear the other tools moving around. It's going to cut off just some little pieces. Although I need six little balls, I'm actually going to melt more than six and then choose the best ones. Andi, I'm going to use a small blowtorch. Don't need any more heat than that. Andi. I'm going to melt them on. Chop off. Just chalk hope. Look. Malchow on top the charcoal block absorb some of the oxygen, so that means that there is not quite so much corporatization forming on. That also helps to get a smoother surface the ball as well, because sometimes the copper oxide ization conform. It'll is pitting on the talk with balls, and we want to avoid that. So I'm going to do is just take each one in turn, apply the heat. Keep going. We'll see. It pulls up along on its own. So much fun. I like to keep the heat on it for a while, just to make sure that surfaces nice, smooth before moving on to the next one whips. I just got so to pick here in cases and go rolling about. Every brings the flower to life, so I'm going to use medium soda pacing to see coming into shot. Here. I'm going to use paste because I find it a little bit easier to apply that to the back of the ball and pop that back in the middle of the flower. I find that using a riparian doesn't allow the ball to sitters neatly in the middle. A zit could do well. The reason using mediums solder paste is so that I can use easy sort of place to put little handle little loop on the back off each poppy. I'm just your pickup, each poppy in turn. So each of our border in turn using reverse section tweets is personal for bitter paste on the bottom. I got this the right way around with that one sometimes have to keep the bulls a little bit of a role so that they sit on the bottoms. You see which way up there supposed to be proper little bit paste on the back of that one? I mean, continue on with these other full as always, when setting things up for soldering, it is worth taking a time. But heating things up gently is always the best idea, because it helps prevent things moving about too much, especially when they're things that they're this small on. They could, in theory, blown about by the force of the flames, so heating things up gently. It's best thing to do. I'm going to have a soldier pick in the other hand as well. Andi, remember the easy solder paste have taken the nozzle off the end because it was so tiny I couldn't push the pace through. I'm going to do that. It's just smooth these five off soldering break because I'm going to want to pick them up, handles, um, later on on, and I don't want them to get hot, so just going to hold one at a time. In reverse action, tweezers earned put It's a little bit too much. A little bit off, um, solder paste for the end of this, a lot to squeeze out of this, that's gonna get a bit messy, I think how he co that's enough to start a little bit of sort of what you might see to darker patches on the bottom of here. It's a little bit of solder paste. How about you going to melt that solder paste in position on the tips off this little handle and then hold everything in place so small, bright, oce just 11 to mount in place. There we go. So it's a bit more feet for a start.
