About This Class

Welcome to the Smoky Quartz Poppies class! In this class we're going to start with six dainty discs of silver sheet and forge them into beautifully sweet poppies. I've then used the poppies to adorn the top of a gorgeous pair of smoky quartz pear-shaped faceted beads, but they would look just as lovely on their own, strung onto a jump ring hanging from an earwire.

This class will teach you some simple forging techniques, and will also help you to practise one of the most important silver jewellery making skills - soldering!

This is one of a series of video classes, each one showing you how to quickly and easily make a lovely pair of earrings - sometimes two pairs - as part of my #52earrings challenge. I have challenged myself to design and film tutorials for 52 pairs of earrings in 2017, and I'd love you to join me. In each video I will show you the materials you will need, explain the tools and equipment and go through all the steps needed to create your own lovely pair of earrings. Along the way I will share with you the same hints and tips that I teach in my jewelry making classes and private tuition so that you become more confident with your techniques and design skills with each class that you watch.

This class is a beginner class although those with previous experience will gain value from practising their fine soldering skills.

The equipment needed for the project is explained in the videos and also listed on a downloadable document that covers most of the tools that I will use in future earrings video classes as well so you can plan ahead! All the equipment listed can be used for a variety of other jewellery making projects.

Earrings #39 in the #52earrings challenge.

I have been making jewellery for as long as I can remember, and have been passing these wonderful (and addctive!) skills on through my classes for nearly 20 years. I am self-taught and like many people I started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making! There is something so magical about watching solder flow through a seam, joining two pieces of metal together smoothly.

My studio is in Southampton, on the South Coast of the UK. I design and make jewellery for galleries across the UK, teach regular and popular jewellery design workshops, and also offer private tuition. My jewellery design projects have been published in both UK and US magazines and books.

1. Smoky Quartz Poppies: My name is Timmy. I'm Joy Cider. Okay, welcome smoking coffees in this class. I'm going to show you some simple forging techniques Were going to take six simple small disks of sterling silver and compass, um, and flare out the register for a lovely ruffled edge That will be the basis off some really lovely poppies once soldiers a civil ball in the middle. And of course, I'll show you how to do that as well. The popular will really be brought to life, and we're going to use them to adorn the top of a beautiful, smoky, quartz busted ship to be There is a pair of earrings, as you can see are going to be really beautiful and perfect for dressing up for a night out . However, the poppies are really versatile. Once you've learned how to make them, you can use them to decorate any type of beads. Almost any style veering, even threaten. What a jump praying hanging from an ear y and use um, the poppy. It's also a great way of using up scraps silver the left over from other projects as they don't need very much silver a tool in French. The silver, the time using started off as quite small pieces off no 0.7 millimeters songs that were sheets that's actually just under 20 gauge, then died, then set that through the rolling mill to give it a wider surface area and reduced it down to about 0.5 millimeter. 24 games sheet on. That is all that we need to create the poppies. This class is part of the 52 areas challenges I set myself in 2017 design and film tutorials for 52 different hearings. Have a look out for the hash Type 52 hearings on both Instagram and Facebook to get a hint of what's coming next and see some behind the scenes photos if you're ready to get started . That's have a look at the materials and the equipment that we're going to need to make the hearings 2. Smoky Quartz Poppies - materials: thesis materials I'm going to use to make the smoky courts poppy earrings the smoky courts beats a time. Using are these beautiful long pair shapes with a hole or running from the top to the bottom for me, just right the head pin through. They've got really lovely large facets that catch the light beautifully. So going to make a really beautiful dress, a pair of earrings. I'm going to be making my own head pen to throw through the beads on day. I'm going to make that out of no 0.8 millimeter. Why, that's about 20 gauge stoning silver wire. I'm going to use the same. Why? To make the ear wise as well. I'm going to make the poppies out of the two pieces off scraps silver sheet that you can see here. They started off as pieces of your 20.7 millimeter stunning, so a sheet left over from other projects. I sent it through the rolling mill Andi that has increased the working area that I've got, which also decreased the thickness, so they're now just a fraction over 0.5 millimeters on that's approximately 24 gauge of sheet. I'm going to be cutting discs out of summer sheet and also using so little snippets of it'll melt into certain silver balls to decorate the inside the poppies. 3. Smoky Quartz Poppies - equipment: the's handles I'm going to use to make the smoky courts poppies. The poppies are going to start off as discs of sterling silver sheet. I'm going to cut those out. She's in my discuss Attar whilst I'm cutting them, I'm going to support this cutter on the leather cushion, which would also help to keep the noise down. I'm gonna hit cutters with an old hammer because it doesn't matter that that hammer picks up the marks that the steel cutters will leave on it. I wouldn't want to use one my nice texture in hammers as the marks left by the cutters would spoil it. What? We're going to use the old hammer. Well, I am Domingo discs on forming the poppy shapes because I'm going to do that with my domain block on the dome ing punches on again that will be sitting on the leather cushion to support everything whilst I'm working. The rest of tools will be used for putting the earrings together on making the iwas. I'm going to use the ruler on the wire cutters obviously cut off the length of wire that I'm going to need for both. The head opens onto the ear wires. I'm going to use a round nose pliers to form a loop at the top of the head pin. Andi, I'm going to use those same pliers together with nine on your pliers on the flat. No supplies to formally ear wires. I'm going to use steps Mandel to form the distinctive U shape in the ear wires or though the barrel off a pen such a Sharpie would do. The job just is nicely. I'm going to finish off the air wires by firing the ends to make the enticing comfortable to go through the holes in your ears on by hammering the tops of them. I'm going to hammer thumb with the plan Ishan Hammer on because support the work on the steel bench block again with the leather cushion underneath it. This is a soldering project, so we also need to have a look at the soldier equipment that we're going to need to complete the project ever 4. Smoky Quartz Poppies - soldering equipment: This is the soldier equipment, as I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap. On top of that on. Do they form nice of my balls as I am used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here and have also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly what I wanted to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi the paintbrushes. What? I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work, so he was also available in a paste form, its ground up soldier that's already mixed with a flux, so you don't need a separate flux. In fact, if you were toe adds the yellow Fluxus, I showed you it would stop this soldier pace from working properly. It's most commonly available in syringes with small tips that she can see here. You can also buy it in tubs and pots, just like with the traditional sticks or strips of soldier, so the pace is available in three different melting temperatures. Easy, medium and hard. I've just got easy and medium here. The easy is the one that's 268 degrees sent rate for amounting temperature. The medium is 732. Recent weight. As you can tell, the easy solder paste, is a favorite newer than the medium soldier paste. When you have a new syringe, it's best to pull back on the plunger after you finished using it. Otherwise, the soldier pace is going to continue to snake out of the tip a little bit, and you don't want to waste it because this is actually the most expensive way of buying soldier. I like to use the solder paste on projects like chains on door, so hollow beads sometimes might use it on sucking rings if I'm in a bit of a hurry, because one of the advantages sort of place is that the soldier usually stays exactly where you want it to be. Unlike the sort of Italians that can jump off as you start to heat the metal up, small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas butane gas that you use to reform cigarette lighter. At the back of the picture, you can see a so cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to forward cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans that copper oxides up. Before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers, not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and last, but definitely not least are her safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully 5. Smoky Quartz Poppies - cutting the discs: Theo. First stage of making the copies is to cut out some little silver disks. I'm going to be making six poppies, three for each hearing, so it's obviously six desks. I'm using a 7.9 millimeter or 5/16 of an inch discussion from my loving disc cutting set. Obviously, your discusses may not have the exact same dimensions as I have, but one around about that measurement will do nicely. The next stage in the class vexations. I would actually enlarge the discs ever so slightly, so I'm probably going to end up with disks or cups discs rather that will be closer to nine , maybe 9.5 millimeters in diameter. Now, if you watch the of my other classes east, this cattle You probably heard me rave one about my lovely discussion already, but that looks weather beaten up press for her, for your fair few hammer marks on it. By now, that's only to be expected because it's about a decade old, but it is a lovely, good quality one, and despite being so what it does cut really, really beautifully still, as a couple of features that just want to run through fight quickly that make it such good quality. 1st 1 is with the cutters themselves. That's not is clear to see with this one. So not sure you with the biggest cutter. I got to see that the hit with cutting head here, my turn it around. It's actually sloped. Slightly cheaper. Discusses will have a very full at surface, not slow turtle on. That means that they were trying to punch out the whole disk at the same time with this one . Sounds to cut out at this point here. And then the cuts spreads around the edge of what becomes the disc as the cutting head gets hammered further throw something else is really good about this. Cutting head is at the edge is a really nice and Christmas sharp, even after nearly a decade of use. So those two features together, I mean, that's the cutter itself, really Does the job Nice. Now the other feet show. Yes, Off the groups was to run away off the part that the cutters fit into that. Hold silver tightly on. If you can't get the two parts part in, just give middle but tap on the side that come apart a bit better. Now they do come apart, but they thin holds the silver really nice and tight in the part. There's no none of this held at a certain distance or the tiny yet with cheaper sets. And because of that, they're summiting. They're holding so it tightly so it can't move about as I'm cutting it on. That means that I can cut really close to the edge. So I'm just day. I'm looking down through this whole because that's the one that this cut a fits into Andi. I'm just making sure that the edges are just out of you. Andi. That tells me that if I start off with the edges in view on, then just gently moved the silver to move them out of the way. I know this. I've got close to the edge as possible. Now that this is only got scraps silver, I'm actually going to be cutting off bits of it to mountains, balls that would go into the center, the poppies. But it's still good practice to get into, to try and make the best use of your piece of sheet as possible. So the country goes in obviously cutting edge down, he'd have it no other way out. Pete certainly will do damage to the cutting edge on this is the fun bit. Just hitting it with a heavy hammer, small disks and thin sheets like this. It doesn't take much effort to cut the discs out, and you can see how nice and close I went to the inches. So I need two more. This looks wrong. One that would have been a piece from a steak. Two mortise, first staring. See how many I can get out of this full . I don't think I'm gonna get anymore. They're those areas slightly too small. So we used to say the other piece off scrap. Now, if you're using two pieces of silver, then you do need to make absolutely certain that they are the same thickness for this project. You can use anything between about 0.52 point six, and that will work really, really nicely. But they must be the same because if they're not in the next stage, you're going to end up with different sized poppies on, like a little bit of variation, but not a massive amount of variation in the so I know that these two pieces scrap are exactly the same thickness because I rodent through the rolling mill one after the other, making sure that the rolling was such the same settings for each. So they cut the last two discs. I need out off this piece, being half a sharp edges on the scrap to I always have a first aid kit in the studio, but I'd really rather not have to use it one. So six super disks almost ready to be turned into poppies. 6. Smoky Quartz Poppies - annealing: If, like me, you're using scrap silver that you've sent through the rolling mill for this project, then you will need to kneel your disks before going any further. If you are using fresh sheets such come straight from supplier, you haven't done a hammering or rolling or anything else like that to it. Then you can actually skip this section. Assuming that is that you by your sheet ready and Neil, which is how it usually comes. However, I know that because I sent this to the rolling mill on dive, then cut discs out that they've had too much work done tooth, um, to allow me to shape thumb nicely and evenly in the next stage. So I've put a Sharpie mark on each disc because he's a very small piece of silver. It would be easy toe over. He each some, Well, someone kneeling. I definitely don't want to do that. So pretty. The Sharpie Marcon gives me good indicators to when I reached uneven temperature. When the market is virtually burnt off, that's going to be hot enough with pieces this small. I've also got it'll plastics it here. I'm going to pop that in my quench part just out of sight, Onder. When I've heat each piece up, I'm going to put them in the seven. The quench pots I comport the sieve. Angela's this together straight in the pickle pot where they can be cleaned up. And then I can pick the whole city onto six disks out of the pickle very easily without having to fish around in the bottom with the tweezers, trying to pick these very, very small disks up from the bottom of the pickle part. If you want to do the same and just make certain that your sieve is completely plastic don't have any metal parts in there because they will interfere with the pickle. So we just need to use a small torch for this. Yeah, he teach one up in turn. - Go . So take each one. Pop it in the safe hope sieve in the pickle Put clean everything up and then once it will clean to the silver has hot a nice rinks. Well, then, get on with the next stage and show you how to shape the poppies 7. Smoky Quartz Poppies - shaping the poppies: thing in this section of the class, I'm going to be turning the six little silver disks into six hammered, flared out cops. Discs are going to be the basis off the little poppies that they're going to decorate the earrings. So he report to the four discs that I kneeled earlier. They've been cleaned up pickle. I've given the good rinse on good dry as well. This one was flat and has bean domed. So what I've done with this one is domed it in doing block while I've used in 11 millimeter metal punch for doing that. 61 your past. Just the dome ing stage and she can see find move it about. That's the edges of that cut discs have been for their doubts. They've bean hammered out to give the impression of a flower petal outline. Andi, I used a nine milimeter dumbing punch to do that. So what I'm going to do is move the camera and show you how I got from that stage to that one. And then the final poppy shape that you saw the first stage is to dome the discs on. You need to choose additional doping block that so point doing it in a really big one. It's hard to get any curve it all, but also you don't want to go to small. You won't don't want to go for a dish, for example, that is, I could find with the Reese. Well, one's hiding about somewhere and the ah, you don't want to go for one that small because although the silver still fits into it, there is too much of a distance relative to the size of the disc, too much of a distance between the bottom of the disc on the bottom, off the dish on DSO. If you were to hammer straight into that one, you'd end up with a disk that was probably a little bit creased around the edges, which we also don't want. You can use that dish for disc that size, but you would need to go through some of these dishes first of all instead. So double check. I have got back to, uh, the one that I want to use Kiss approach. There we go. That was it. That was the one I used. It just puts the dish that so The disk that has beena dish little bit being domed back in there, and it's really nice fit. So I know that that once the one that I used so I can pick one of these title disks up for this stage, you want the disc sitting ice essentially in the bottom off the dish. I'm going to be using those Hama to hit the I've never met a meat metal punch. I'm going to hold punch nice and upright. So I get a nice, even shaping because the service being a kneeled, that's all it took just a couple of hits, so basically the same, too. The other three as well is that so? Four for the last five discs dish now lice and domed, so need to get them to that shape. So you've heard me say, I hope that I kept the punch nice and upright, and I kept silver sitting centrally into the dish. So that's the silver spread out and domed evenly for this bit. You don't want to follow those rules for this bit. I'm going to get the silver dish to sit up lips to sit up one side or another. I'm going to use a smaller punch. I'm going to hold. This isn angle. I'm going to hit just the H is off that dish and fly them out. So moved thes. Come on us out of the way. Otherwise, they're going to go jumping about as I work. Such have the dish over with one side slightly, holding the punch at an angle. You should be out to sea that you can see the slightly Shania edges. What? Not to see that that is no longer a completely smooth around. So I'm gonna continue that one finish that went off. Try to escape. I put my eyes. I was back on again. Andi. We were about to the light much better, coming a bit closer so you can see again the contrast between just a nice, smooth dish and where it's being hammered around the edge. Never put that one up a swell Shea that they are all going to end up site different. There's no way of getting each poppy identical in this, but I think that's part of their charm. There's a close up view of the first to Poppy, so I shaped along with one of the disks. That's just bean Don't is still night and evenly shaped. So hopefully as I moved about in the light you shipyard to see that the edges have been hammered out. Uh, slightly. Shinya the edges. That's what I'm going to do now is continue on and do the same with the last four poppies. 8. Smoky Quartz Poppies - melting the silver balls: e I want to. So the super ball in the middle off those hammered and flared out poppy shaped disks to make them look a lot more like poppies. Andi, I'm going to make Josepha balls by melting some off. The scrap silver that's left over from customers is actually sit here. I'm not going to use this bigger section here cause I might be hard to get something else out of that. But I'm going to cut. It's using snips so I can hear the other tools moving around. It's going to cut off just some little pieces. Although I need six little balls, I'm actually going to melt more than six and then choose the best ones. Andi, I'm going to use a small blowtorch. Don't need any more heat than that. Andi. I'm going to melt them on. Chop off. Just chalk hope. Look. Malchow on top the charcoal block absorb some of the oxygen, so that means that there is not quite so much corporatization forming on. That also helps to get a smoother surface the ball as well, because sometimes the copper oxide ization conform. It'll is pitting on the talk with balls, and we want to avoid that. So I'm going to do is just take each one in turn, apply the heat. Keep going. We'll see. It pulls up along on its own. So much fun. I like to keep the heat on it for a while, just to make sure that surfaces nice, smooth before moving on to the next one whips. I just got so to pick here in cases and go rolling about. As you can see, these are very, very quick to mount because they're so swell well, that one to go rolling about rescuing later. That's why you must always put a chokehold Rick on Teoh Safe five proof surface. - That's just rescue that other one. We went down there. Just apply a bit more heat to that because it was mulching when it landed on the slate tiles. So much was a bit misshapen. There we go. So 123456789 That should do me. I'm going to pop those into the sieve. Obviously have the CIF city in the water first. Otherwise the metal balls are just going Teoh some out all the way through it and use the city trance further into the pick or to clean up, and then I'm going to choose that ones that are the best match to go inside my poppies. 9. Smoky Quartz Poppies - soldering 1: way hammered poppy shape. So to the soldering station, Onda taken the cleaned up. Little silver bores out of the pickle. Andi, it's time to solve them together. But as your seen in the previous part of class, I'm outed. Nine little silver balls on Guy. Just take out the three. Smallest, I decide what shot of thes three is the smallest. Let's check out that one. So take out those three and leave these six. Andre. Everyone sold it in the middle. They're each poppy ondas you can see it really does make a difference just by popping a little silver ball in the middle does make a difference. Every brings the flower to life, so I'm going to use medium soda pacing to see coming into shot. Here. I'm going to use paste because I find it a little bit easier to apply that to the back of the ball and pop that back in the middle of the flower. I find that using a riparian doesn't allow the ball to sitters neatly in the middle. A zit could do well. The reason using mediums solder paste is so that I can use easy sort of place to put little handle little loop on the back off each poppy. I'm just your pickup, each poppy in turn. So each of our border in turn using reverse section tweets is personal for bitter paste on the bottom. I got this the right way around with that one sometimes have to keep the bulls a little bit of a role so that they sit on the bottoms. You see which way up there supposed to be proper little bit paste on the back of that one? I mean, continue on with these other full as always, when setting things up for soldering, it is worth taking a time. I'm making sure that everything is positioned how you want it to be, - my hunger moving out a shot, by the way, say so I can use both hands to squeeze the nearly empty syringe off medium soldier pace of it as so. So to pay starts to run down, you definitely do the two hands to squeeze it out. All of those six and now position nicely. So what I'm going to do is take the small blowtorch. I'm just heat up about around about one at a time. That's the heat starts to flowing to the little silver flower and then rush across to get the soldier to melt. But heating things up gently is always the best idea, because it helps prevent things moving about too much, especially when they're things that they're this small on. They could, in theory, blown about by the force of the flames, so heating things up gently. It's best thing to do. I'm going to have a soldier pick in the other hand as well. Just push things back if things not to leave about the ship around slower, Soft Caesar's changes color the sensation of hearing soon as you see an autopsy can hear a bit more clearly. Soon as you see the flop such floor out of that lighter patch in middle of poppy on you might see ah, flow. Three quits, solder was it? Melts might also see the ball starts a second down a little bit better, because at the moment on these other ones, it's just having a bit of solder paste underneath it, so it settles down a bit. That's another sign you can watch out for green flame. You might serving out again, by the way, It's just the burner, so I just find a rather the binder in the pace burning off. There's three of them done. Now, As I'm doing a few of these, I'm going to move the camera. So that has a slightly different view to see me. Soldier, Those three together. - Okay , that is all six puppies soldier together on diagnosis with that one, I gave the ball in there a little bit for Nigel, This one. I actually had Teoh heat up a little bit again. Get soldier to keep flowing so I could push the ball over a little bit. Soc, which was it was the closest I could get it in the middle off the property. So those six properties need to be quenched thing to go into the pickle Teoh cleanup because at the moment the backs have got it. But you much jock size age, remember, one of the things that soldering needs is clean metal, so even that small amount of oxidation needs to be cleaned off before I can put this will handle on the back. That's the head pin it's going to threat through so that these can go into the earrings 10. Smoky Quartz Poppies - soldering 2: the six poppies are now ready toe have their full handles or loops soldiers onto the back on dive. Put these four flat down on the soldering block and do the same with the's ones. Says I got access to the back. If the notable soldiered in the middle, were sticking out further than they do on these, then you might need to put these on a soldering brick that a little bit softer. An older maybe got some little Jim, causing cracks in its that will still allow everything to sit flat. But there was always that I soldiered in the middle of these copies. Don't re Trude further than the edges of the disc, so everything can sit nice and Stapley, which is important because you don't want things rocking around when you are soldering. You want to stay nice and still is a lot safer. Have also formed four of the little loops or handles that I'm going to soldier on to the back off. You need to make another two. So this is how I'm Aktham. I've got to my around those pliers onto no 0.8 millimeter wire. Andi, basically, you're into form half a loop. Just going to use applies to twist the why into those not brother handle really, and then use the wipe conscious just snip hope the wire slip off that excess lengths. So just pulling it into U shape. But I've got about 1/3 of the way down there. A round nose, pliers groups, and they catch off the access. So that's the six little handles made. Next thing is to soldier everything in place because this is the last week sold rings I'm going to do. I'm going to use easy solder and to be using Easy soldier pace because, personally, I don't like to mix the pace and the Palins. And there's some people, some people who do, but I prefer not to. Andi, remember the easy solder paste have taken the nozzle off the end because it was so tiny I couldn't push the pace through. I'm going to do that. It's just smooth these five off soldering break because I'm going to want to pick them up, handles, um, later on on, and I don't want them to get hot, so just going to hold one at a time. In reverse action, tweezers earned put It's a little bit too much. A little bit off, um, solder paste for the end of this, a lot to squeeze out of this, that's gonna get a bit messy, I think how he co that's enough to start a little bit of sort of what you might see to darker patches on the bottom of here. It's a little bit of solder paste. How about you going to melt that solder paste in position on the tips off this little handle and then hold everything in place so small, bright, oce just 11 to mount in place. That way they won't get smeared over the back of the poppy. Andi moves a shout, the way my hand and hold it on the back. This is a little bit like soldering, a stud fitting on the back off a pair of earrings. But in this case, I got to soldier joins instead of one, so a little heat into the poppy. That's rosary speaking. A larger piece of metal with bundle in place continue beating. A soon soda has amount of rounded and flown out. She could remove the heat because you don't want to overheat thes, be very easy to overheat them as they are so small. And then hopefully noticed, I kept everything still, until that bright look around the two soldiers jointly gone that showed me that the soldier had gone solid again on everything is imam position. So I'm going to pop that in quench part cup another. It's full frontal and go through the same process for the next five. So you got another five opportunities to see what we're doing here. Each one is actually going to solder a little bit quicker because it was already picked up some heat. When I've been soldering the other poppies, I want this sort of paste really is quick. Is that too much on the I ? Should that want that for handle isn't really in the middle of the flower, so I'm going to do it, see if I could move to cross a pit, I guess, to the right angle. There we go. So it's a bit more feet for a start. A remote soldier go When the soldier was moting, I just used the tweezers just to pull it gently back over towards the middle, and that's a much better position. So so that's six. Therefore, poppies nicely cool down, but now they need to go in the pickle because they're still in a little bit of optimization that needs cleaning up Andi. Then I'm going to put them in the tumble polisher to give them and I shine before putting the earrings together. 11. Smoky Quartz Poppies - making the headpins: way popular cleaning up in the pickle. I'm going to make the head pins that are going to thread through those lovely, smoky courts to your heart beats on door so that the poppies themselves are going to throw it onto a swell Onda cut to five centimeter links of north 50.82 millimeter stunning silver around wire on, going to melt a ball onto one end of each piece of wire. And those are going to for my head spins. You may have seen me make these before, but it's always nice to have another view of it. But I'm going to hold each piece of wire in turn in reverse action tweezers just in front of the tip off the blue cones of flame on. But I like to do. It doesn't move the end of the wire around a little bit in that area. We don't take it out the flame, but I find it by moving it about a little bit like the neatest spore are then pop the 1st 1 in the quench pot. The 2nd 1 would do the same to that just in front of that glucose. Good. That's what it takes same with 2nd 1 It's going to give you a close up of those two headed pins before I put him in the pickle so you can see what I've just done here. The two had pence. You can see a little ball melted onto one end of each quite dirty balls at the moment because they brought quite a bit of corporatisation on them. So those have been quenched. They can now go straight in the pickle to be cleaned up. They're also need to be rinsed again and dried before I can continue working with them and use them to finish off the earrings. Sometimes I'll make a whole batch off head pins rather than just the two that I need for a particular project, and then choose to that are the closest match for the projects I'm making. But sometimes it's nice chance to see whether I can make to a decent match, which I've done here. Some happy with these so once have been cleaned up, will carry on and finish off the earrings 12. Smoky Quartz Poppies - adding the poppies to the beads: the head pins and the poppies are now out of the tumble polisher. You can see the poppies. I got a really lovely shine to them. I threaded the two drop where the past shapes, smoky court speeds onto their head pins. So all I need to do now is throat the poppies onto the head pins, Turn a loop at the top. Andi, use these to 5.5 centimeter links off no 0.8 millimeter sterling silver wire. To make a pair of otherwise so threat the puppies own, you'll find that the poppies will find their own places to sit, skip things a little bit of a a jiggle about. See, they sit at the top very nicely there, Andi. So I'm going to do is turn and I loop. This place is I can to hear first I can get the pliers in. I'm going to be turning in I loop rather than a wrapped lupas. I might do normally at the top for bead because it was very difficult to get the bit of the wood silver that's here but civil. Why to wrap around this step would be very difficult to get in there because the poppies, but because this is have earrings and not going to have any pressure pulling on them on I loop would do perfectly fine. By the way, if you're not already familiar with how to turn and I look, then do download the step by step photo tutorial that I've attached the class materials. So I'm holding the wire about 1/4 of the way down the pliers. That's Frayer, far enough down. Remember, the closer towards the handles you go, the bigger the loop. You going to turn because the noses get bigger. So I'm going to use my finger and some and also twist the pliers to turn that wire around. This is where it gets a little bit more fiddly. I've got to do is lift the wire over those puppies. Andi, I'm also going to use a pair off. Uh, these flattened who supplies always forgot their names just to help me pull that. Why round? Because they can see what you see now. And why had to tuck behind those poppies society little bit more fiddly to do so I'm going to do now is trim off that bit of why that access while they're just inside the room. So this is where a pair of good quality coaches with a quite a a shop nose comes in handy because they can actually get into that tight space. And then again, you got to see this more clearly on a step by step photo tutorial just puts the chip suppliers back down inside that loop and twist it back so that it is now sitting at the top like a Loy. Pop does only stick. So I'm going to do the next one and then stop and give you a close up view off what it looks like. Secretary Figel. We have a shake so that they sit but lower down on and same again, he's my fingers. An interest supplies as well is thief flat, No supplies just to help pull that round? Did you go behind that puppy? He's probably 50 ist bit. No, you have to lift that up. If that's up so I could go back down behind the poppy, that's better. So again, use the wire cutters just the right tip to cut off the excess. Why you want to cut off the excess where before it crosses back over itself. No, afterwards, and then use just the chick. I get it in there. Tipped applies just to pulled by back for the back onside. So I said, I'm going to stop and give you a closer view of what this looks like. So I just bought these in what? The cameras bit closer. So I hope you get a better view off what I've done. Some holding the loops I formed in the pliers. So everything dangles down. Andi, hopefully can see. I move that around for you. That group is sitting inside those little poppies. You can see it here as well. So the next thing that I need to do is to make have ear wise to finish off the earrings. 13. Smoky Quartz Poppies - earwires: I've got to 5.5 centimeter length of not 0.8 millimeter wild I'm going to use to make the ear wires. I don't want the front section of the ear wise to be very long. I want the main designer the earrings to be quite close to just protest below your your ears. But I do want to bit of ah, longer tail at the back of the ear wise just to violence out this and other links here. So the iwas going start out as usual as I loop Oh, and one end of each piece of wire and has already said there is a step by step photo tutorial to help you to do that. If you're not already comfortable with them, I'm gonna make these looks quite small. So better quarter of the way down the ply us. But I can't feel the why. Sticking up that's important because of you have the wires sticking up a little bit. You could end up with a teardrop shaped thing around on finger and thumb, close to where I'm working to support. Why so twist supplies away from me? I can feel the wire being moved being pulled through my fingers until the cut ends. Meet some of the tail. Think suckers saying with next one of those will make too the same time. So there's the start. Two loops. I'm going to use the middle section on the set, Manjural to finish off the, um it was put the U shape in them. Andi, I want my group at the end point into itwas you could have it sitting on top. You could have it sitting round that way. It's up to you, but I decided, wanted facing inwards. So hold the loop lights. So hold it with my finger Might buy some. Rather, I just use my other hand to bend tailed the Why rounds. I've ended up quite a short here, right in front with a nice long tail that will balance out that design quite nicely. Eso It's like the same with next one going to start bending it around so I always do with the 2nd 1 so that I can double check that it is a suitable links. So bad bending round. I was checking them again. Front sections a good but this tale needs bending round little bit more that was the 1st 1 that I did. So what? I can get it back on the manual the right way round. There we go in host on Mandel. Just gonna push that tail just a little bit. That's what it needs. No. Three things are stony to do. I need to hammer the front section to give a little bit of strength year wires. I need to file the ends so nice and smooth. I also want to flick the ends out a little bit. To give him a little for a professional shape Doesn't matter what order you do those things in, but because it's quite a long tail here, that increases the chance that if I play about with the end without strengthening, I'm more likely to pull this out of shape. So for that reason, I'm going to do the hammering first. So just going to hammer this front section with my Plaschy sama do it took a hammer stroke , something that waas let me go and that just makes what's about spring you onda uh, a bit but stronger. So flat nose plus Senussi is already just use the wits of suppliers just to pull back that section with the wind. One to readers. Give them a nicer look, and soon what do you use? Flat needle file to smooth off the ends. As always, use your finger in some to feel the end. Don't just trust your eyes. Actually feel this. It's nice and smooth, but I should have said Really is holding the ear winds up against each other. She checks that they were a good match. If I'd realized that one of the tales was longer than the other guy was, just use a water crisis to trim it off. Just gonna do one last simplify. Assemble everything this year why the loop is twisted slightly. So I'm just going to use around those Southern non Jew applies just to grip that loop. I'm gripping up here as well, so that section doesn't move just to align everything up Life. See, so you wire is very forgiving. So time to put everything together. Goto flat. Nice applies again. It's going to lift up one side. The loop. I sleep on the loop that is at the top of the beach. Close it down again to hold everything in place, dangled beautifully. One can lift up that loot pop on the loop of the top of the has pen so I can get it to sit still. Need to open this new proper little bit more. I think it's a problem. There we go closely back down again this second evening. So such a beautiful pair of earrings that deserve to be taken to a party, I think. And there we go. Fish are these poppies can be used to decorate all kinds of different earrings, all kinds of different beads to get you different looks. 14. Smoky Quartz Poppies - final thoughts: e really pleased with how things turned out, both the likely hammered texture that has been created when the popular forged on. Of course, the facets on a beautiful beach catch the light fantastically, making this a puff it pair of earrings for party. However, as I said, it starts the class. The poppies are actually a very versatile design you can achieve with any other type of be to suit any occasion, any taste or even useful on their own. A cluster of them hanging from a jump, praying with dear one attached to the top. We have start fitting on the back of the jump, Green says. Will be really, really lovely if you haven't already done so you may want to check out my poppies hearings class as well, because that shows you how to make a larger double petrol diversion of these beautiful, dainty flowers. Do you remember to download both the equipment list because that contains equipment not just with this class but for all of my other areas classes as well. Andi do members while to download the step by step photo tutorials. I'll oops, if he needed a little bit of extra help with that technique, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you make how you use the poppy. So pleased to upload photos to your project section of the class. And if you've got any questions, please do us. We also great if you could leave review to help students. And I hope to see you in other classes in the future. Thank you for watching.
