1. Introduction : Oh. The possibilities of using we can have you with paper avg are endless. This tile material, with which we can create textures by folding or cutting. C bringing more color, and interesting details for the sets of your animations. Hi, I'm Lucene a visual arts animator based in Australia. In this skillset class, I'm going to teach you how to view you as such, for your animation, using recyclable materials as paper, giver. Through my process, you will learning. How to plan of set, and to search for difference. I'm going to show you which tools we can use and how to work with a different kinds of glue and painting in which kind of paper. This class is suitable for everybody who are interesting in set designing, miniatures, and stop motion. Having a drawing skill is a plus, but it is not essential for this class. By the end of it class, we'll be able to be just set for your sup motion animation or photography production. You will see how you can light it the possibilities of camera framing and the movement speaking heavy wing and made you with a sch. I'm so excited to have you in a class. Come with me to see how amazing this recyclable material can be for your productions. Let's get sat at. 2. The class project: Let's talk about your last project. It will be your time to be your set. So defining if it will be a nod or outdoor singing, do a is of everything your st will have. Think about the style. We will be vintage you modern. W to be minimalist you or full of the tails. Do your for reference and to make a tib, which will help you a. Prepare the materials and to build it. And finally, choose if you will animate your set or if you only will take a photo in both the case, set up your lives according to with the set. Think about what the same asks. The creativity is limited. So let's do it. 3. Planning the set: We need a Plan or set. It's important to think about the style. We want for each. At writing the ideas. Writing is the first step be for the planing. And you can guarantee us to know exactly what you need in the process to build the set. Think about to be ando or o sch. W to be to modern. Which will be the statch? Is it full of the tails or a minimal statch. With this idea as the finite, we will do a list of everything the set will need. For my sett, I may think about a jazz bar. My stch probably will need a table and chairs, Jazzrox, as it is a live musky bar? It will need a stage, a bar with many bottles of it drinks, sachins, and lights. This is another thing I can think now, but doing a search for a frase, I can have more idea. N. 4. Searching for references: Is a green platform search for with rings. Search for key words, which define the sch, you want attribute. Each could be for example in set. Think about a house for example, we could search for a kitchen, but a vintage kitchen or a mother living. Also think about an outdoor scene. We could search for botanic gardens, or metro buildings. So let's see about the jazz bar. In my search, I can see the curins, the jazz instruments. I found this blue light inching. It is something I hadn't put before, but I can add it to my ich as well. I really like that. This is another photo. I can see this sttch key, which is nice. So it's important to save the main thoughts from difference from your search. Having this multiple reference will help you to create something unique. Also going outside to being in spide by side things, and the lined scape is of lining is great to have more idea. 5. The moodboard: Physical or digital presentation, which reference of colors, images, faults of drops, and other elements, which can be in project. In animation, for example, which can help us, to visualize how composition will be When we are planning or such design a waterboard is really important to organize our ideas and to visualize how the details we ch in our set can be in the final result. Usually I make my waterboard in interest as well, save in the reference cre barge. Usually I turn it this as a privity barge as well. Let's see some examples of some Muti words mate for some of the sets, I had to build for my animations. In this dancing club in Muto words, I was collecting some reference to use in the set of Abdopp, I was animating. So I was searching for some ideas for the interior stache key of bar. And also blue purple colors for the lighting. This is another one of vintage kitchen. I was searching for pastel colors. I could you have how I stch I could you have for its floors, and also the Fritch, and other kitchen appans. Coming back for the bar, I'm going to start to make the ut word. Also using Ptah. I'm going to save the instruments, the pats of the musical instruments, the curtains, the it as an idea to use when I'm going to light in the set. Also the faults I have collecting for re things. I. 6. Sketching: To catching is a step of the planing. We should help us unlock visualize how such can be. It doesn't need to be complex. We can use the software to make it italy as Procreate or to desk sketch book softwares. Or we can use a pencil and a paper, as I'm going to use for the sketching of my setch. Besides my wobard and also is of everything. I play edge for my setch. I'm going to statch to a sketch. Browning everything. I watch for my setch, but also thinking about where each thing will be. I have the stage, which will be close to the bar, which can be in the right or the left side. The by, it will have a wall with many bottles and the lights. I want to have three of it right here. The tables, I want some round ones, and I watch the floor with a piano relation. My bad will be in the first floor. So it will have a stairs on the floor as well. I want a wall which breaks and the cur chain will be in the same wall. Also, I need drowning some musical instruments that I want to be in the table. Photcology can be an option to replace sketching. If you don't want it or you don't have a drawing skills. If I would do a photology for my jazz bar, probably would be like this. 7. Cardboard and papers: Let me start to work, which paper. Sometimes it's difficult to choose. We should paper to use as we have syringe kinds and the g SN in each kind of material. In the process of building a set kinds of paper, it's better to e to build the sett and the others for its interior. CV walls, adding some details, as curtains or rugs, for example, and making some props. Card boards as this ones, which we can get from the livery box, is perfect to make a set wall or four because it's thick and strong. Also Cartbards, which is around 800 or 1,000 GSM is great too. Great cart boards are some kinds we can find with this GSM. Also, we have a fa boards, usually, it can be 5 millimeters fak and it's perfect as well to use in the st truche. Now about papers, we can use which allow GSM. The ones which is around 110 or 200 GSM are good to use in the interior of the Sch to cover the walls or use the in other details. If we need to fold the paper, to make a cour chin for the set, for example, I recommend this ME, 110 or 200 because it's not so fi, but it's not so in, so it can bring a good result for your set. It's totally possible to use So papers with a lot GSM, for example, 90 GSM or 80, for example, Oregon papers or papers for scrapbook, for example that have some interesting patterns to use in set when we think about the walls, or some details that we can use in in the interior of the set. But we need to be careful when we use a glue in this kind of paper because it is easy when we use the in this kind of paper for this paper to be a beach crumpled. 8. Cutting tools: To cut to the papers, we have definite tools, and for short, scissors can be the first one we think about. But for Carchboard, the painting of its GSM, how thicker it is. Using a scissor is not the best option. For a fier paper, a scchbard from the delivery boxes, or with a high GSM or fam boards. I snappy of knife, also no snappy of house knife, it's perfect. Also it's good to use still holler while we are ctching. The plastic ones is not so recommended because we can cut it as well during the process. Iv knifes are great for manage finch kinds of paper. I can cut a cart board or a paper which low GSM. Then we have a scissors. Which is better to work, which papers from 80 or 200 GSM or a bit more some gray catch boards, but it de paints if it's not so thicker. Dept on the project, I also use sometimes in the production of my sets, act machine. I have the accut machine which I use to cut the tails, which would be difficult to catch by hand. But when I use this kind of machine, I need to have the shape of what you need to be cut in a computer or an iPad your tablet as well. And then send the file to the machine, and then it cuts to what I need. 9. The kinds of glue: There is no many finch kinds offy glue. We can find to buy. But to make a set, some are better than others, and it depends as well on which kind of paper we are working. Usually, there is three finch ones. I use it when I make my sets. PV Fabric and that is a universal glue. So the PV glu, which can be that one, we use for school projects, or sometimes, it can be strong glue, which can be used for g. It is white, and recommended for scrap projects. Also, the timing it can take to d, it's not so fresh. So it's better to use in lightly areas, apply it which brush. Fabric glue, this fat is for fabric. Can we use it for paper and it's split similar to PVA glue. It's better to use in larger areas as well, apply it to which a brush. It's important to use the a brush to apply this kinds of glue to avoid to have so many glue in your paper, which could make the paper be crumpled. Y who glue or universal one is my favorite kind. It dries very quickly, and it's great for small areas as well. Small deets, and the propping, made which paper, or other material as fomcly, as well. Sometimes I using larger areas, but just sing some parts of the paper. 10. The painting: So let's talk about paint. When it's time to paint in the set, we can use kinds of paint, and which kind we have fringe results in the paper. We can use the water cool acrylic or this one, which is a kind of paint to imposters. I really like the acrylic ones as it have a solid co which is applied in the set. Any kind you choose always a cache of what you use too much paint in the paper as can be crumple g, which the excess of painting. It's important to tech in a piece of paper, how the paint will be about the color, or if the paper will be crumple g, just take a small area to do the test. This water color paint without water also works very well in the painting of your cel. 11. The scale: One of the most gifict parts in the process of a building asset is the scale. How to calculate it, how to define it. I something can sound vigifict. But as long clasts it, we can see it's not so difficult as it looks like. The sign scale usually is, one by six, which is know as play scale, one by 12, which is quite often usage for houses. T one by 16, which is for model making t, it's really small as it is very detailed work. On by ten is usually usage when we are starting to make miniatures. So to calculate a scale for example, we can measure a table and divide its measures by ten for example. In a table, which measures 150 per 9 centimeters. The size in a scale of one by ten, would be 15 per 9 centimeters. Usually, I don't measure the scale for my set. I use the measure of a paper size to define the walls of a room in a house, for example. And then I define the size of the prop according, which the size of my Wa into my caractors. But in measuring everything according the scale is better to have everything proportional in your set. 12. Building the set: Now it's time to build the set. In this step of the process, I make it to the list with everything I need to make for the structure of my set. So look in the planing, I know that I will need to make the floor and walls, also sign stairs. I can make as well the cur chains and the bar. I start preparing the cardboard open and cut it with the measure of A four p. And then I make the floor using Ho glu, cutting the cardboard stripes, using an issue ruler as well. Also, I make the etage with some parts of the same cardboard. So if a gray arch board, I make the stage floor and I use the Grey Cache board as well to make the stairs for the stage. I'm still using Yoho glue. Which is the one. I'm going to use in this holy process of building. Now it's time to make sd tails. I will call piano floor, using the gray Card board. And also, I make the range ae for the main stairs. For the wall of the stage, I use an orange, 210 GSM paper in which I ag Hu glue, and the curt and the glue some tiny little pieces of cart barge to make the bricks for the wall. The cur chains made also with 210 GSN paper. A blue, 210 GSN paper is ag for the floor as well. And then I start painting with the acrylic paint, the piano floor. In which I'm going to use a black paper and a posca pen in some of the details. So I finish the secondr wall with some bricks and the orange paper. I decided to make this time in the bar, which can be considered a prop. I use a cardboard to make it, and also a black paper. And then it's time to make the stairs, using again the gray archbogy, Y Hu glue. And also, I use the orange paper in the stairs wall with some bricks, and I finish painting which the white Cari paint. 13. Building the props: Set planing drop is anything. That's not part of the structure. Usually, it's often the movable things like chairs, table, rugs, anti things, that's the puppets can interact with in the stop motion. So besiding the planes, I'm going to do another as this time, whichever thing my j bar needs, and can be a prop. In the process you just said also making a prop, it's important to have into lists as it can help us to know everything we need to make for or set. In this process, I can search for tutorials, searching for keywords. Off it app, I'm going to make, for example, a chair miniature or GI Y paper chair. Something I like to do in my process is serving for as a rtense of object I'm going to make. So I look at the shapes, it has, and then I try to drown the shapes. It helps a lot to be possible to make any propy I want without any tutorial. Other material we can use to make props is the polymer clay, which is a vn baky clay, which harden fy baked for sins. It's interesting to use this kind of clay to model in sun shapes for the props, and also combining which other materials of sketch boards in the propit. So in the process of making the props for M S bar, I use it to the gray card barging, cutting itchy, with the carving knife, in scissors. India, also I use a 210 GSM paper to give you some color for the chairs. The shape of the props doesn't need to be perfect. So my round tables will not be perfectly roundy. I use the Yu glue as well. India black paper, also with a 210 GSM. To make some parts of the piano, I just scratch with the carving knife, the gray paper. In this way, it's es to modeling some parts of the piano. I use acrylic paint and also some tiny pieces of blacky paper to make the piano keys. For the eel, I started drawing the shapes. Wh looks like the number 80, and also I cut it using a scissors. So with the carving knife, I scratch a paper stripe to model in the sides of the Celo. Also, I use the 210 GM paper to get some color in the Celo. For the drums, I use a metallic silver paper to make the drum parts. Which I make it with gray archbog, and also pepper tube from a paper towel. And then I paint it with aclicy painting as well. And this is the result. The drinking bottles and the glass I had made some while ago for another animation, and then I'm using in such. Everything, the bottles and the glass. We made which a 210 GSM paper. 14. Lighting the set: It's a boule lighting. Usually in sub motion, we work with three points of light. It's come in product animation, for example. But in the set, it can be a little differentials. We need to think about, which village of the day will be sinning. Also if the sinning will be inside or outside, if it's inside, what kind of light it will have. All the answers will define the way the lighting will be. I a scene, which is in street in the niche, for example, using a blue light to bring us the feeling the scene is really happening at the niche. While in a morning sinning, with tact that inside and in the room. We can have the light coming from the window as a sunlight. Then we can also have a scene showing us a window in a building, and the only light we have is coming from inside the room as the scene is happening in the night. Lighting is really important when we animate because it also helps us to tell the story, we want to t in our animation. We can use soft boxes, which lead lights, and there something really helpful. Is to have a small table lamp, to have the light coming from a window for example. Also led as this one, which is a goodx, to get a fox in the lighting. A each could be made with a paper com and a table lank as well. To have a colorful light. I use sometimes a cellophane paper, but we need to use it with a safe distance from the light as it can be burned by the lighting paper. Also, it's possible to find you by some professionals lighting color s for lady light. 15. Camera framing and camera movements: We have some possibilities of camera framing when we are made with sets. Also one reason for building only two or three walls for the set, and every thing to be removable is about the comino framing. Because sometimes we will need to have only one wall in the ceiling to have a better position for the mer. We can explore 45 degrees, a front, or a flat, the painting on what you want for c Now, talking about coma movements. The way I make it is to have the coma in the sa spot in the tripog, I don't move it. What I'm going to move is only the set. I always use the cartopogy under my set, and then I can do some marks on the table to know how much I'm going to move it, or I can drown the marks in the screen of the softer dragon framing, which is the soft I use to an image. There is three kinds of camera movements I use in my animations. Side to site, where I move it from right to left, for example, els it to be from left to right as well. Zoning or zlty, where I bring my sedge close to the camera or take it a ***** far, moving to the back or to the front. And then also rotation in 360 degrees, where I need to have a four walls for this kind of movement, and also, sometimes I need to change the position of the props for a better camera framing. 16. Conclusion: Thank you for working in this journey with me. Congratulations for completing this class, but we learned you how to plan in the set, how to search for the things, and to make a multi bog, which materials and how to prepare these materials as well. We learned how to build the set and how to it. Thinking about the period of the day. And also, we learned you about how to use the St I stop motion Animal. I hope you got the skills. And now, keep practicing. Share our project Inequa project. It will be amazing to see what sett you are going to build you. Any questions, feel free to Olivia committee. And ta feedback is really appreciated. Thanks again. Is you.
