1. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets: Hello, My name's John Tinley. I would resign and tutor for the Southwest UK. Welcome to the first serious classes that's going to teach you all about riveting most of my jewelry. France's focus on soldering, which is a fantastic technique at once you learn how to soldier, it really does open up a whole right new world in jewelry thinking. However, sometimes it's nice to use materials that well, to be honest, they can't stand the heat from the blowtorch. What we would piece is off acrylic sheet on maybe up cycled pieces like fabric, leather buttons, maybe, or shells things that you found that would make be useful piece of jewelry. Well, that's my merits. Come in. They are cold collection techniques that allow you to join together different layers of material securely so that you could use some jewelry making. This first class is going to focus on the simplest, riveting technique making wire rivets. I'm going to use one. Why rivet on each of a pair of earrings to hold a states of a flower on to beat. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - materials: thesis materials that you're going to need to make a project for this first riveting class . The base of the earrings. I'm also going to attach a pdf with hints and tips to help you get the best start of your soaring to this class. The last material that you're going to need is some not 0.8 millimeter solely silver. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - equipment: thing is the equipment that we're going to need to make the riveted flower earrings. I filed my flowers for the needle file on. I'm also going to use that to follow the end. Why that I'm going to use to create the rivets. I also gave the flowers a homage texture with small ball peen hammer, and I arrested them on the seal bench book with the leather cushion underneath whilst I hammered. I've got two other hammers here as well. I've got a riveting hammer, which is a nice lightweight hammer with a cross pinhead. Andi, I've also got a passion hammer with a large round head. I'm going to use punishing Hammer to help finish off the year wives for these earrings. I'm going to use my school bench drill to drill through the bead on the silver. But a hands drill would work just as well. I'm going to be using a north 0.8 millimeter Drillbit. And this is very important because you must make certain that the whole that you drill. If the same gauge as the thickness of why that you're using to create the rivet. It will mean that the riveters, a very tight fit on, did that you might needed over toe wiggling to get it to fit through the hole. But its this tight fit that helps to hold everything safely and firmly together. 4. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - a few pieces from the soldering kit: Although we're not gonna be doing any soldiering on this project, you are going to need a few bits as the soldering kit to make the hedge pins. Of course you can if you want to choose to buy the head pains instead. But it's fun to make them. It would just mean that I don't have to go fishing around at the bottom of the quench pot or the safety pickle forward by small, thin head pins if you're going to follow that tip. So please make sure that your sieve is just plastic. You don't want any metal bits in there. Otherwise, they could cause problems that could actually discolor the silver when it's inside the pickle. Last but definitely not least have safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Please do look after them. 5. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - preparing the rivets: I'm now going to show you how to start preparing the rivets, ready to threats. Please make sure that both ends of the wire for a nice and flat, because that's going to help form the rivets as easily as possible. I'm just using needle file to do that. It just makes it easier. I know that they're both filed flat, so I don't need to keep looking backwards and forwards and finding out which is which. So I've attached my table top clamp to the desk. This is rather nice, one that I can loosen off this section on. The whole thing can turn round if I wanted to. So going to do is clump just one of the pieces of wiring to time. That's is what tour. Okay, so one of the pieces of wire is sitting a little bit proud, not too high, because the higher it is, the more it could move about. So sitting a bit proud, Andi, I'm going to be using riveting hammer now, as you guys have heard me say, in other jewelry classes, Silver moves at right angles to the head of the hammer, and that is how this process of riveting actually starts toe work because we've got across head here on this very light. I'm going, going to start hammering it from a different direction, and it's going to start spreading in that direction. I keep working my way round on such spreads and starts to mushroom at the top. We don't need the rivet head to be very big. We just need it to be big enough not to go through the whole. Remember, we're going to drill no 0.8 millimeter holes through the beats and the silver on this. Why is no 0.8 millimeters? He got very tight fitting hole, and you just want to spread it out enough so that it won't go with way through. So where we g o you might find us? Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - drilling: now that the first side of each y riveters made it's time to drill the hole that rivets are going to be passed through. I've already taped one of the silver flowers onto one of the wooden beats. The whole is running through the middle. Andi, I've positioned the silver flatter one side at the bottom of the bead on the whole is going to be drilled in this spot on quarter down here, right through the middle of the flower on it is away from the central hole that's running to the bead. Remember, it's important to if you're using, I wouldn't be like this. It's important to choose Beat that you have got enough surface area that you can do all the whole away from the central hole that the wire the head pin is going to be sweated through . So on each tape up, they flower on this speed as well. I've got the tape holding the silver flower already. So what I want to do is hold it again the bottom quarter and hold some of the tape there. Okay, I'm happy with that. Remember, I want these to be mirror images of each other. So I've got this flower on the right. This flower Well, the left fold, the wire. So for the tape around the beat. Is it with the flower on, though, it's really easy to see that the flower is going to be in the right position on the whole is definitely going to be away from middle second Jewell through the two together. What's a no 0.8 millimeter drill? Bet in my bench drill. Andi have chosen this side of Drillbit because the Y rivet is itself no 0.8 millimeters, and you want the diameter of the rivet on the diameter of the hole to be exactly same. So it's a nice, tight snuck fit. It might take a bit of effort to get the wire rivet through the whole once everything's drilled, but it's going to be worth it to get that nice, tight fit. I was going to move this over slightly so I can access everything best on and just double check that The drill bit coming down a positioned. Everything's the drill bit is coming down in the middle of that silver flower. Of course, the other reason I've taped everything together is that the Silver Flower is really, really small, so difficult to hold on to some drilling. But if it's taped to something bigger that's going to make, my life would be easier. So we turned on the Joe. Now, Andi gently guide the drill bit as it spins through the silver and then the wood. They can see the darker saw just there on top of the silver flower showing have gone all the way through on and might just be able to see the whole just about there. So did the same to the 2nd 1 again take time to make sure that it's sets up nicely. So can they take take these apart? The reason I like Magic Scott to take full room for jobs like this is that it is easy to take off. He can reposition it. A little bit of you need to Andi. It doesn't leave any sticky residue. I just picked up one of the rivets that made earlier in the class on just to show you that it will goes. So it's been a tight fit. Do you have to wiggle the wiring for bets when it will? Don't go through on through the wooden beat? Well, what you might have to do is use a pair of not on Joe pliers just to there we go encourage it, so it's twisting it around a little bit what you're to see that's starting to come through there and push it. Show me the rest of the way through. Once it started to come through the top, you see it there sometimes useful. To grab it with a pair of tweets is very gently in pushing it down like that. If you're going to push it down like that, though, remember to do do it gently because you don't want the wire of it to bend over. That would make it more difficult for it to go through so and also push it down on something that is softer than the silver. So it's not very damaged silver, so I give you a better idea. Oh, but what one of the rings is going to look like I'm going to put the rivets through the second area and then show you how to finish off the rivet on the other side. 7. Riveting Part 1 - finishing the rivets: I threaded both of the rivets through the beats now, and you can see underneath the the silver flowers or in places. Well, I don't know whether you can tell, but this river it is a little bit more wrinkled than this one. This took a little bit more effort to get through the beach, had to regulate to grab it with the pliers. Andi, I did. So there are a couple of kicks that worked their way into here. I smooth those out with the night on your cai's. Now see, those rivets are far too long as they are need to turn them down. It's far easier to start off with a long piece of why. Basically, So you've got something to grip onto whilst you're working, but then you're going to need to trim it down so you can finish the other end of the rivet . And there were a few different message that you can use. Some people like to use a thin piece of card with a whole it or a plane card with a whole it and fit that whole over the rivet on did used that piece of card as a guide as to how much to cut off. My preferred method is actually to use a Sharpie for me of that after the way, a moment I'm going to do, if I can hold it so that my fingers are getting in the way. Strike without my fingers. First of all, don't going to do is just draw a line across the silver Cross, the rivet that is right down at the bottom. So I've got the pen almost resting on the beat on and line you can see on there a darker I write down the bottom. It's just the wits of this pen, and this is a nice, narrow fine Pulp Point or an ultra fine point Sharpie. So I did the same with this one, starting it. Still with my finger on just drawing a line right down bottle went over a few times to make sure that it was. It was nice in clear. So though its face full screen, it is definitely that that is all of the wits that I need to finish off the rivet. So just going to use the cutters, what I did do. First of all, Waters said, it was made sure that the rivet waas pushed tightly on. What you don't want is extra wide down on this side and then show everything often realize that you've actually got the rivet longer than you actually need it to be. So I'm just going to trim that one wolf one so can see the silver just there on and my fingers catching on it. It's It's definitely still sticking up Onda again. Just trim off. So it is a very small amount that you need when that is the length of the wire that I've just trimmed off its actually old enough to make her to start another river twins. Now, if you can remember the action that I used with the hammer before I was hammering across the river, it ever so likely where it's held in the camp. I don't need a clump this time. I'm going to use the same action. Very light hammering, Which is why I remember This is a nice light hammer. So you don't put too much force into your hammering. Andi, I don't need a clump because it's big enough to hold on here now. Andi, I've got it on a steel bench block so that the other end of the rivet is held tightly against this so still, bench broke his friends right along. This is another hammer onto the other end, so that as I have a little bit on here, the other end will stay nice and flat and smooth. Onda We worked wonders of it as well, so it's going to move that one out of the way. Otherwise, to go jumping off anyways, I start hammering. I would sit down with the camera down this low angle, by the way, so that you had a better view of what's going on with the second rivet. I'll move the camera. C. You're looking more more head down. So it's always with something like this, a trickiest thing for me, probably best light that is holding onto such a small thing. But doing it in such a way that you can still see what I'm doing. So that's probably best we're going to get. It's really light tapping. I went around. Remember, The reason why we're trying around is so that's the why it's spread out. The top of the wise were read out in different directions because it's moving right angles to that hammer so I could feel there that the wire has become smooth. Something hammering it. Andi, it looks wider. Done Just on this one for show. You, too. Same. This one is. I have to trust me on this because it is a minute difference. This one is slightly. Why? This is one I've been working on on the Y. Slightly wider hips butt out the way again. Um, but it only needs to be ever so slightly wider to stop it from going through that north 0.8 millimeter hole. Now, what I'm going to do now is just a bit of hammering on this side. I'm going to use this end to the hammer this time again, just to make sure that that scientists like So some doing now is I'm going to alternate between one side and the other just to make sure that the riveted Fischoff evenly on either side on that it is holding those two layers that wouldn't be so far snuck up against each other. I was hitting head on rather than holding up the hammer at an angle. I'm actually just hitting the rivet, not to the silver Flower so I'm not affecting the texture on the silver flower. What's because the rivet is selectively raised compared to the flower and again on the other sides have turned it over. Now that is all it takes. So the rivet on this side is nice and sloughs up against the wooden beat. Most have screwed up against the flower there. Andi trying to pull the flower off. I won't come off. You got your two silver flowers riveted onto the wooden beats, so the last parts the class are going to show you how to turn those into a pair of air. It's 8. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - making the headpins: It's time now to make the head pains that I'm going to straight the wooden beat with their silver flowers on to Andi. I've cut 25 centimeter links off no 250.8 millimeter wire on, but I'm going to do is a melt a ball on one end of each piece of why the beads would then be 30 through from the top. Riveting Part 1 - Simple Wire Rivets - wrapped loops: taking the hedge pins out off the pickle on. I've given them a nice polish with a polishing cloth that you can get from any high street jewelers or from any jewelry supplier. I could have put him in my tumble polisher to play shop, but I didn't have anything else to go in there. So just giving him a quick polish with the polishing cloth did the job nicely. So if I see red thumb through the beads making certain that the beads are the right way up , you can see that the ball at the end stops the beat from coming off at the bottom. So they say I need to do is turn a rap group at the top of each bead. A rapidly was really good for this wrath, and I loop because by wrapping some of the excess wires around the stem underneath the loop , it prevents lead from coming open. So I'm going to hold the wire about 1/3 of the way down the pliers. Andi going to twist. So what away with supplies? Twisting applies around pools. The wise to my finger thumb to form loop. The next step is that I'm going to put in the U Shape the bend. It's actually going to hold the ear wise in your ears, going to bend around the middle section of this step commando. So I'm just going to use pair off night on your plus just to twist, um around. You can see the difference. That's all it took. Just a little twist for these nylons. Your prize. Okay, at the moment, I was having to hold those very carefully, so I didn't move the wiry tours I twisted. So don't move this section the wires I twisted down here because this is a particularly strong at the moment I had to do. Last two things these do are to the ends off the ear wires, always a flat nose pliers to just flick out that very end sections just the same amount as the wits of the pliers, twisting it back right that should get putting side by side. Same to this one, just the wit suppliers twisting it out almost, Um, but at the moment, the ends here's but scratchy.
