1. Welcome to the Program!: Hi, I'm victim, the creator off Ari CBT, the super coaching system as a psychologist, trainer and coach. What I found that most people struggle with is helping their clients achieve sustainable results, especially when it is directed towards something that deeply desire for themselves. In order to combat this challenge, I combined the power off the original principles and procedures off rational, emotive behavioral therapy and paired it with the power and application off cognitive behavioral therapy in order to help you help the clients that you work with. Adi Cvb is a powerful asset tohave by your site because regardless off where and with whom you're working with right now, as long as there is a conversation Toby hide, you'll find the tools that I have to share with you. Super Handling plus R E CVT is a super effective scientific and easy toe up like once you learn the practical application of all of this. At the end of this program, you will be able to masterfully change three important dynamic areas off your client's life , including their emotions that thoughts and behaviors by skilfully using the power off rational, emotive cognitive behavioral therapy. Also, you'll soon find yourself transformed in your capacity to handle any challenges or personal problems that their clients might be facing. And I'll be helping you achieve this by sharing with you the really effective A B C D E model. And along with that, I'll be showing you how some simple mental shifts on, by changing our clients, believes we can impact their life in a dramatic way that they never thought possible. Once you learn the specific assessment tools and therapeutic techniques that revolve around Ari CBT, soon you will be able tow a play this with individuals, organizations on even large groups. So if you're working in an environment where you need to communicate effectively, you need to take someone who's goingto a challenging time and bring them to a place where they're thinking and acting differently. Think anyone who may be struggling with their problems from a place of weakness to a place off absolute strength where they're living a problem free lifestyle. You will benefit from what I have to share. So what are you waiting for? Let's get giving you those amazing skills associated with R E CVT and contribute to the people who need your help. And believe me, there are a lot of them. Sign up. No. And I'll see you on the inside. I promise you, you won't regret it. 2. Introduction to RECBT: Now, before we begin, there are a couple of things that I would like to remind you off. First off, in order to keep things new, Bill, I'm going to be calling you the person who is going to be doing the helping, Ah, helper and the person who is going to be receiving the help from you a client. So anyone who comes into your session, they are going to be looking for various techniques, solutions and tools that they can apply in their own life. So, in orderto receive that from you, you're going tohave to learn all of these practical skills yourself. So you need to apply the stuff in your own life, practice it, refine it and see what actually fits into your line off work. And that's the most important thing right now. I would like you to focus on one important thing. How you can take your client from point A where they are right now and how you can systematically shift them to point me where they would like to go there and goes. In order to make this possible, I would like you to engage with all of the information that I'll be sharing with you in this program so that you can become a master off Ari CBT or like I'll see you in the next lecture. 3. What is RECBT?: So what is Adi CBT all about? Well, it's a combination off Ari bt rational, emotive behavioral therapy on cognitive behavioral therapy. Using Ari beating. We primarily look at emotional and behavioral problems. How we can go about changing the philosophy of our clients, how they look at their word, their belief system, that emotions all of the stuff contributes to how they actually shape the reality. So at the same time we are going to be integrating an active directive approaches. We use this type of therapy. We are going to use highly scientific and standard by stools in order to help achieve this . This is what makes these two techniques so useful, and that is they are highly scientific and they have been well researched. At the same time, cognitive behavioral therapy is going to look at the thoughts, the self talk and also the behavior off our clients. When me and mesh these two powerful tools, we create our e CVT. So when we integrate both of these and we apply it in the field and you apply this with your own clients in any area that you see fit, remember that you are going to have a vehicle to create powerful change with regard to anything that their plans to achieve, no matter how ambitious they might be with that said, I'll see you in the next lecture. 4. Objectives of REBT: waters, Ari BT. Aim to achieve For someone who goes through this therapeutic process, let's look at that in this lecture. Now when we look at the broad objectives off Ari Bt, what we need to understand is that each person is going to start somewhere and each person is going to end up somewhere. So when we take on a client regardless off where they stand, we need to help them achieve their goals, and at the same time, we need to help them achieve a disturbance free lifestyle. Now, unlike most therapies that may try a bandit approach and might try a solution that is momentary or is going to only help that lined in the moment, Ari Beatty or Ari CBT aims to help give the client a lifestyle that is going to permanently solve their problem. Now isn't that cool? With that said, it also helps practice objective thinking, logic and reasoning. Now, this is a quality that seems to be lacking in most people today, but it is this capacity that weaken gift our plant really get them to think twice and see things for what they are and see things for what they could be at the same time as they go about solving their problems. Start initiating this new novel process of thinking for themselves in orderto ultimately get to where they want to go. Number four. We help them transform their belief system using Ari Bt. Now this one is powerful because when we get our client toe, think and see the world in a completely different way. Ah, world in which their problems are no longer there, where they believe that they can actually do something in order to improve their situation . This is another powerful gift that I believe that we can give our clients. So when we shift them from an irrational form of thinking toe a rational form of thinking, we can achieve this in a very steady and quickly. So this is essentially the kind off process that we try to deliver with Ari Beauty and that as we get them from point A to point B toe, think differently about the world about themselves on the problem at hand. In order to make this process a lot more easy for us and the client. We helped them with tools, tools that they can use in their life on a day to day basis. Whenever they run into a problem, they will be able to take wealth, heart out actions. They'll be ableto handle themselves in a much more refined way, and they will eventually get to where they want to go. And I believe that across all of the amazing benefits that Ari BT gives our clients I think feeling emotionally empowered is probably the biggest on the list. Because if we can get our plan toe masterfully control their emotions, then their entire perspective is bound to change. Because if we can shift them out of their current emotional state into a more empowered emotional state, we can get them to change their beliefs, take different actions, thing different thoughts and sworn to bring all of these objectives off Ari Beauty or Ari CBT. Together, we can state what we wish to achieve with our plant using a therapy like this. All right, isn't that cool? CRE beauty is designed to help the client with their own emotional disturbances so that they are able to use their own intelligence and maturity to solve that practical problems. This is what we look to do with Ari beauty we seek to empower. Additionally, Ari beauty will allow them to maximize their potential towards achieving self actualization . With that said, I would like you to know that Ari Beauty is one of those therapies that believes in elegant change. The goal is not just to help our client feel better, but actually get better. Understand this in this enduring therapy, it just does not stop with philosophical or emotional empathy. No, but it enables your client to practice better thinking and engage in behaviors that will actually serve them better. That will actually get them to change their world. So the goal is not to just get rid off the mental or emotional disturbance that they're currently struggling with. But the larger goal is to live a life that is disturbance free. Does this make sense as we move ahead in this program? Soon you will start to realize that Ari Beauty, when paired with the power of CBT, will turn into ah powerful catalyst for change. I'll see you in the next lecture 5. Rational v/s Irrational Beliefs: what qualifies as rational or irrational thinking in our lives, we tend to create our reality based on our thinking. Our thoughts help shape our decisions and therefore the actions and results that we see in life. So it becomes vitally important to understand how thoughts function so that they can be leveraged upon in order to make better decisions. This is a capacity we build within our client to get them to take action. This lays in our capacity to understand how our plans think with regard to the concepts off rationality and irrationality. So when it comes to working in R E B E T, a lot of attention needs to be drawn to the understanding off what they mean. What does it mean to have a rational thought? What does it mean to have an irrational thought? Now, before we jump into what rationality and irrationality and ill we'll be looking at, how we can recognize these and distinguish them as needed. We can help start this process off. Recognizing a useful formula, Max is smart Spee and Albert Ellis, the founder off our E V E, listed five basic principles against which an idea or ah program incorporating a set of different ideas and be judged as rational or irrational, which means reasonable are unreasonable, this formula. X shape in the form off some simple questions. First off, if I believe this thought is true, will it help me remain sober, safe and alive? Second, is this thought objectively true? And upon what evidence can I form this opinion? Third, is this thought producing feelings that I actually want tohave? Fourth, is this thought helping me reach a chosen goal? And finally, is this thought likely to minimize conflict with others? With That said, Now we can recognize certain beliefs are certain ideas that either work for our clients or they don't seem to work for them, and they just hold them back by asking such questions, we can decipher whether our client is going along the lines off rationality, our irrationality. No. What are rational beliefs? Rational beliefs represent reasonable, objective, flexible and constructive conclusions or inferences about the reality that a person lives in that supports their survival, happiness and a healthy result. What are some of the aspect off a rational belief? Let's look at that. No. First off, it promotes productivity and creativity. Second, it supports positive relationships in a person's life. Heard it prompts accountability without unnecessary blame and condemnation off others or even our own Selves. Fourth, it encourages acceptance and tolerance. Number five. It strengthens persistence and self discipline within someone. Additionally, it serves as a platform for conditions that propel personal growth. Also, it is something that correlates with healthy risk taking initiatives. Now this one is very important because our capacity to take good risks, risks that will actually work for US calculated risks. This is something that rational beliefs allow us to achieve. They also linked toe a sense off, emotional well being and positive mental health. Another big benefit off rational beliefs are understanding off ourselves, our understanding off others. How we think, feel and act in different situations. It is going to improve drastically with rational beliefs. Rational beliefs also lead to a realistic sense off perspective. They give us a really a world Understanding Off water's actually going on around us and further empowerment off others is also possible when we start thinking in a more rational way, because if we can empower ourselves using rational beliefs, we can help others achieve the same with that, said. It also stimulates a sense off openness to experience. And it gives us an experimental outlook, not just limiting ourselves toe a certain set off directions are ideas, but we can really start seeing the possibilities when we act with rational beliefs. Lastly, it also brings someone closer to their own ethical pathway. And as you use this with your own plan, I'd like you to understand that when someone creates a certain belief system, they are building their viewpoint of the world. They're changing their understanding off things, and when someone creates a powerful, rational belief, they are mourning their own ideas, the rules by which they judge the world themselves and other people. All right with that said, what are irrational beliefs on the other end? See, irrational beliefs represent ideologies that cloud your consciousness with the distortions , misconceptions over generalizations and oversimplifications. Basically, they mess up your thinking, and they don't allow you to live life to the fullest. One thing to make note off here is that with regard to rational and irrational beliefs, they are most of the time habitual, not automatic, but because off the nature off beliefs hold it in to create habits that lead us to engage in seemingly automatic behaviors. One thing to make north off here is that with regard rational and irrational beliefs, majority of the time they are going toe behave automatic. But in fact they are habitual because of the nature off how beliefs work, they tend to create habits that lead us to engage in seemingly automatic behaviors. Does this make sense? So it appears like things are happening on autopilot, but in fact we're just operating based on habits that we have formed over a certain period of time. And when your client is dealing with a specific disturbance in their life, they're dealing with problematic situations are really they're not ableto break past their current limitations. It's all because off the fact that they're operating based on beliefs that are running certain habits. That's why understanding beliefs, building our awareness with regard to them and at some point changing them that can help the situation in a very powerful way. All right, having said that, now let's look at some off the aspect off irrational beliefs that we need to know in order to recognize them and really pinpoint what we need to shift in order to create more rational beliefs. First off, irrational beliefs limit and narrow your outlook off the world. The people that owned you on yourself. It can even block you from achieving your own personal goals. Now this, when you work with a client is going to be a huge setback. But as you go about using these principles off Ari CBT, soon you'll start to realize that you can unblock each and every one of these limitations that are holding your client back and slowly and systematically. You can start getting them to see the world in a different way, and they will start taking action to achieve their personal bowls. Additionally, irrational beliefs are going to increase the likelihood that certain mistakes are going to be repeated. Now, this is natural. Your client may come to you and say that, Listen, I'm not able to find a way out. Things just keep continuing the way they are. I'm just bound to make mistakes over and over again. In order to shift them out of this perspective, you need to recognize the irrational beliefs that are holding them back. Fourth, irrational beliefs can serve as a temporary escape from the tension and pain off the real world. This is a big one because most people can't handle the reality off the situation. Some people just can't tolerate certain pain that is going on in their life. So they masks this emotional pain by really entering a place in their mind where they don't have to deal with it. This is why irrational beliefs are going to help. A person may be in the moment, but long term actually can impede and inhibit them in order to get to where they want to go . So that's why irrational beliefs can actually limit a person in a huge way. Number five irrational belief support some form off instant gratification rather than long term gain. As I just mentioned, irrational beliefs are only going to help a person for so long. Soon, irrational beliefs are going to limit and inhibit a person from really going as far as they can. That's why recognizing the potential off rational beliefs in order to help someone achieve their long term goals, really looking to the future and see how they can shift themselves to take action in an effective way to get there that is going to be really important. Also, irrational beliefs create extreme emotions that can persist, distress and sometimes even immobilize. This can manifest in the form of behaviors that harm oneself, harms other people or even one's own life in general, see some off the emotions that could be experienced as a result. Off irrational beliefs include depression, anxiety, defeat, arrogance, hostility, insecurity, prejudice, envy and so on. I mean, there are so many, as you can see, recognize that the behaviors might actually leader client in a downward spiral based on the various problematic emotions they experience because of their beliefs. Some of these behaviors could be impulsiveness, addictions, compulsions, procrastination and so much more. See, it's how these beliefs actually lead to problems. That's what we want our clients to recognize. Irrational beliefs actually put our client in a problematic emotional state and therefore get them to engage in problematic behaviors. Irrational beliefs also distort our reality. Sometimes I understand that it's a misinterpretation off what is happening and is not supported by any kind of real world evidence. Moreover, irrational beliefs are going to be devoid of logic. Most of the time, people actually evaluate themselves, other people on the world around them, in illogical ways. Sometimes we're through the manning off ourselves. We're constantly, awful izing a situation that really may not be that bad. We often underestimate our capacity toe handle, discomfort that is in our life, and we end up creating people in a negative way that can actually be detrimental to our overall personal growth. We'll be getting into these specifics a little later. But for now, what you need to recognize is that when talking with clients, we often refer to beliefs a self defeating rather than irrational. So when you're in a session, you want to use the word self defeating rather than irrational. But for the sake off, explaining the stuff and sharing all this information with you, I'll be sticking to irrational most of the time because I understand that when you're in a session with a client, you need to emphasize that the main reason for replacing a belief is because it negatively affect their life, all right, it's these tiny nuances that you want to give special attention to. When you communicate with someone that you're helping, we'll be getting into this in greater detail, moving ahead, rehearsal, understanding off irrational beliefs and rational beliefs. For now, all right, with all that has been shared so far, now it's time for you to put it into action. It's time for your assignment. Start off by identifying five problematic behaviors that you may find within yourself. What are some of the parts and beliefs that received these behaviors? Additionally, I'd like you to identify five good behaviors that you see within yourself when you engage in these behaviors in your own life. What are some off the hearts and beliefs that received these good behaviors? I'd like your toe, analyze them and identify what makes them irrational or rational. What makes them self promoting or self defeating? By performing this little self analysis, my friend, soon you will start exercising your legs with regard to identifying specific part processes , which is going to be a mainstay off your therapeutic process. As you work with the plane, you'll soon be able to tell why do we really do what we do? Why do our clients do what they do with this firm understanding now that you will achieve as you go about doing this with yourself. Soon you'll be able to achieve the same process, identify what is actually going wrong with your client and get them to see the light with regard to what they want to achieve. So complete this exercise and I'll see you in the next lecture. 6. Philosophy of RECBT (REBT+CBT): What is the philosophy that governs our E Beatty or Ari CBT? We'll be looking at that in this lecture. Understand that Ari CBT is grounded in stoic philosophy. This includes ideas off Phylis offers like Epictetus Kind. So Katy's Russell Buddha and even Confucius. Additionally, the ideas off this therapy have integrated ideas from carbs, Keys, general Semantics theory way back in the sixties. No, this very important fact. As you move forward in our e Beatty, the powerful effect off language on thought and the fact that our emotions are going to be heavily dependent on how we structure our hearts, it cannot be understated anymore. What this means is that when we strive toe, understand our focus with regard to applying, Ari bt we as helpers need to pay special attention to the language that our client uses the emotions that the experience and the thoughts that drive them. Does this make sense? Additionally, Karen Horney and Alfred Adler's ideas have also influenced the conceptualization off this therapy. Karen Horn is work with regard to the tyranny off the shirts and how by using certain words off pressure like must should have to our to it can actually lead to a lot off. Irrational thinking. Also, Alfred Adler's emphasis on inferiority feelings, Active directive, teachings All of this has been instrumental in making Ari Beauty water yesterday. No, why is Ari bt sword different from all other forms of therapy? Why are these ideas so effective? Well, understand this that Ari BT actually strives to solidify the belief that one possesses about themselves, about others and the world around them, and it strives toe empower individuals. It also helps give someone empowering philosophies by which they are able to live their life. And all of this is brought together with empirical evidence in that people can see, hear, feel and actually experience what is going on as they go about creating powerful change in their life. So once again, three things here empower individuals that we work with using philosophies that seek to empower and, most importantly, employing proven scientific methodologies that will allow our client to see, feel and actually experience in the world around them. The kind of help that we're trying to deliver through our service. Now, this scientific methodology and procedure, which incorporates the emotional, behavioral and cognitive side of things, is what turns Ari Beatty Or should I say, are a CBT into ah, highly effective and evidenced based model that gets results. It even brings together ah, holistic approach that most other therapies don't actually give our client. So by learning Ari beauty and pairing it up with the concepts of CBT, you begin to integrate recent proven ideas that build your capacity and power to help your claims. You can no rest assured, knowing that with Ari CBT you will be able to make a massive difference after you have mastered this. I'll see you in the next lecture. 7. Two Basic Human Biological Tendencies: Ari Beauty claims that there are two basic biological tendencies within all of us. The 1st 1 is the tendency to think irrationally. It just seems to be naturally there. There is some biological grounding for this. However, if we had to divide our understanding that all human behavior is directed towards the attainment of pleasure on the avoidance of pain, then we can understand this better. Now. This isn't a generalization that is 100% true, but it can be useful to help describe why we do what we do in relation to thinking irrationally as a means to avoid pain. Some brain imaging studies have sought to identify y this happens within us. They found the to stimulate off equal intensity. One causing pain and the other causing pleasure have produced more stimulation in the brain when delivering pin dan well receiving pleasure. So, for example, if you smile that a friend or you ended up pinching them and both ended up creating the same amount of brain stimulation, if you actually did a pet scan and examine what was going on in their head, even the border of equal intensity, the amount off stimulation from the pain would be higher than the smile or, in this case, the pleasure. This neuro biological effect might explain why we go out of our weight overhead pain. That's why, in most cases people will strive to avoid pain. Your client is going to do whatever it takes to not change, and that's going to increase the likelihood of them thinking irrationally. So they have irrational beliefs about change. Even if thinking irrationally does not serve our clients best, you have to understand that it does serve some aspect off the self in the way of protecting oneself from physical, mental, spiritual or even emotional pain. Does this make sense? So majority of the time, your clients are going to automatically resist all of the strategies and all of the things that you are going to do with them in a session. So if you're going to combat this, what do you need to understand is that it's going to take a little bit of effort. It's going to take a little bit off time, and you have to push them to exercise their power of choice. And this is aimed at changing someone's dysfunctional thinking and getting them to act cnr DBT. We don't really aim to make our client into a rational being. Instead, we seek to reduce the frequency off irrational thinking under irrational behavior. All right, also, in this form of therapy, we operate from a humanistic perspective in that regardless of how irrational a person might be, we are all fall a bill. We can end up making mistakes. That's just human tendency and called Rogers unconditional. Positive regard comes into play whenever we give this therapy to our claims. But in Ari BT, this same concept is understood as unconditional acceptance. We acknowledge that there is a good and a bad toe, everything that we do, even with our clients, that everyone has a choice to change their ways. This is a more realistic perspective that Ari BT adopts and unconditional acceptance of her client, despite the good and the bad, is always going to help the entire therapeutic process and our client's life. On the whole, the acceptance that art land is just a human being. Does this make sense? We will explore more with regard to the power of choice in the next lecture, so I'll see you there 8. The Power of Choice: What does the power of choice until in Ari BT What makes Ari Bt different? Well, it's a choice based therapy when working with our clients using this form of therapy. Ah, lot off emphasis is placed on the philosophy that they have a choice for everything in life . Now where is this focus directed? It is directed towards individual responsibility. See, when people have been presented with a choice between thinking irrationally or rationally, it is the responsibility off their own self and their own choice to think whatever they desire. As an r E b T helper, you do not really have to convert people into rationality. Nor do you have to tell your client what they should go or how they should be. This is a strict no, no. Alright, our job is toe only. Make them aware that Hey, this is the irrationality off your choices and these are the consequences. By taking these actions, you have gotten these results. Do you think that there is a requirement that you need to change or maybe you don't need to change. For example, let's say you have a friend who is constantly getting into relationships that are short term when what she really wants is something for the longer someone to love and cherish as an individual. In this situation, you do not jump in and tell her overtly that she needs to find someone better. No, that's not the approach. Instead, you listen. You let her vent about how her irrational thinking and poor decision making has followed and have led to her feeling disappointed thus far about how things have not really worked out. Then you empower her by showing her the capacity that she has within herself toe, take responsibility and take control off her life and her romantic relationships. All right, you declare that this is how things have always turned out for her because of you declare that this is how things have turned out for her as a result of the choices that she has made. Maybe it's time to make better choices that are in line with what you really want. Don't you think so? With that said, it's also not about evoking the change as much as how we evoke it. We put the responsibility back onto outlined toe, make the right choice. It's up to your client to realize that they are engaging in self defeating emotions, self defeating beliefs and self defeating behaviors. All right, they are the ones who are letting themselves down in relation to their goals. So by deciding to make more rational choices or rather better choices that will affect their situation positively, they are improving their quality off life with all that I've shared so far. What you also need to recognize is that Ari BT is an active directive therapy, and that means as a helper, you can take an active role, ensuring the client their own irrationality ease and at the same time strive to push them to words, making a change if that's what they actually desire. At the end of the day, we can't really manipulate our clients and force them to change. It has to come from within them. This is the power of choice that we decide toe, allow our clients to recognize and they have the capacity to really empower themselves if they decide to use this power that lies within them. So we don't take our clients to the point where they believe that rationality is everything and that they need to be rational all the time. No, that's not it, because rationality can be taken to a level off extreme perfectionism where that itself becomes an irrationality. Do you recognize that? So instead, rationality actually is a means to an end. It's about goal oriented behaviors and overcoming obstacles that come in the way off achieving one's goals. Does this make sense when we empower our plans, direct them towards making a choice about who they are going to be and what they're going to do based on what they really want? And if we do that, we have succeeded as an Ari beauty helper. Revise this if you need to go and I'll see you in the next lecture. 9. The 3 Levels of Thinking: another one off. The fundamental principles off Ari BT is that there are three levels off human thinking. The first level is what we call inferences. The second is called evaluations and the third our core beliefs. Every individual has a set of generalized rules that have usually subconscious, that determine how they react to life. And it's different situations. You could understand these rules, expectations and generalisations as what we call beliefs when an event triggers off a train of thought. What do you consciously think about depends on the general rules you subconsciously applied to the rent. Let's say that a person holds the rule for me to be happy. My life must be safe and predictable. Such a core belief will lead them to be hypersensitive, toe any possibility of danger and overestimate the likelihood of things going wrong. All right, Andi. Suppose they hear a noise in the night there. Hypersensitivity to danger leads them to infer that there is an intruder in the house. The then evaluate this possibility as catastrophic and unbearable, which creates feelings off panic. Here. Ari BT is mainly concerned with helping people identify their underlying general rules or core beliefs This involves going beyond the person's surface level inferences to their evaluations and then, from there deducing their core beliefs on which they are likely to be operating. All right, is this clear So far? That's why Toby, an effective Ari BT Helper, you need to understand these three modalities. If we desire to get better as individuals living and applying the stuff by identifying this within ourselves and bringing about change, then we can start to see how this might play out in our client's life, and then we can give them the CME powerful witness. How cool is that? Now let's look at each one of thes three levels of thinking individually. Inferences indicate that there are certain facts that drive these statements to be true or false within a person's mind. In everyday life, events and circumstances trigger off different inferences about what is going on, and that is, we end up making guesses about what we think has happened is happening or will be happening . Also, little time in Ari Beauty is really spend on a client's influences. They are regarded as significant only in the sense that they are going to provide a window to understand how this person is evaluating what is going on. All right now let's look at evaluations and evaluation is sometimes conscious and sometimes beneath a person's awareness. And if it is beneath the person's awareness with a little bit of effort by simple suggestion that notice how you're thinking or notice how you behave or notice how these habits are playing out, that person can bring it into their conscious awareness. Cnr DBT We go beyond making just inferences, and that is we evaluate the facts and see what it really means to us as helpers so that we can communicate that to our client and really see what is going on in their head so that we can go about bringing about some kind of change. Additionally, irrational evaluations are going to consist off one or more off the four types off evaluative beliefs that will be getting into a lot later. And that includes demanding this awful izing discomfort and tolerance and people rating now following up what was described in the previous section, an evaluation for this inference could be, I need her to love me because if she doesn't, this would prove that I was worthless. So in this perspective, in this respect, we evaluate or a president's and then build on our perceptions based on them. All right. Also, here we can get into something that we know as confirmation bias. With confirmation bias, we seek to confirm what is already in our mind. So if you have taught that if you do not study that, I will feel we presume this to be an inference after you give the exam, you will evaluate how you think you did. If you actually do fail, it will confirm the thought that was already in your mind. All right, look, we are often biased towards certain thoughts that are irrational, even though we can exercise our power off rationality to come back to this kind of perception. Remember, one off. The main tendencies that we all have is to think irrationally exercising our power of choice is going to be the solution toe think differently. And to be mindful of our evaluations every time we come up with certain conclusions and ideas about what is going on in the world around us, we have to recognize that confirmation bias will be instrumental in effecting the change that we want, either in our clients, minds are in others. What this means is that what I think is going to determine my reality, how I infer how I evaluate myself, and I create these core beliefs that is going to systematically shape my reality and also died off my clients. Now what? Our core beliefs, core beliefs are going to play a crucial role in determining a person's inferences and evaluations that are going to be headed in a particular direction. These beliefs service markers and guide our major choices, decisions and even our actions in life. So we create these general core beliefs in relation toe three primary things, and I'll be talking about this in greater detail as we move ahead. They are, I am, People are, and life is a simple example off a general core belief that would apply to the inference and evaluation that we're using as our example here could be for me to be worthwhile as a person, I must have someone who loves me unreservedly. All right, with all of this said, you need to recognize that these three forms of thinking that is inferences, evaluations and core beliefs. They end up making our whole reality. And when we're talking to our client, we need toe understand this in stages. First we recognize that influences. Then we work backwards towards that evaluations. And then we understand. And we pinpoint these core beliefs as we explained them to our client, why they are irrational and why they need to go about shifting them in order to live a better quality off life. With that said revised this stuff and I'll see you in the next lecture. 10. Two Fundamental Human Disturbances: Audie. BT suggests that human beings defeat or disturb themselves in do mean with Now. This can be by holding irrational beliefs about themselves that is the eager disturbance, or by holding irrational beliefs about their emotional or physical discomfort known as discomfort Disturbance. Frequently, these two go together, and people may think irrationally about themselves and their circumstances, even though one or the other will usually be predominant. So you gotta look out for this now. Let's look at eager disturbance first in detail. Eager disturbance usually upsets that representation off one's own self image. It results from personal demands about one's own self, how we should be and how we should react in different situations. For example, I must not feel or I must get approval off others. This is usually followed by negative self evaluations, like when I feel or I get disapproval from others, this proves that I am no good. Such beliefs create what we call ego anxiety. Ego anxiety is emotional tension that results from the perception that one's own self or personal worth is threatened. I'll say that again, ego anxiety is emotional tension that results from the perception that one self or personal work is being threatened in some way. Now, what can ego anxiety Lito? Well, it can lead to other problems, such as avoidance off situations where failure, disapproval or many other emotions might be experienced, looking toe other people for acceptance and even an assertive behaviour through fear off what others may think off someone. And in this case, that might be water client is going through. Now let's look at discomfort, disturbance, discomfort, disturbance results from our demands about others and about the world. If I had to give you an example of this, it would be people must treat me right. This is what we call an others disturbance. It's where other people in our life that surround us are not a certain way according to our expectations. In the same way we can have expectations about how the world should be. The circumstances are owned. Me must be in the way that I want. With that, said discomfort, Disturbance comes into slightly different but related flavors. Let's look at these two subtypes now discover for disturbances can be divided into low frustration, tolerance or Lord discomfort, tolerance, low frustration, tolerance. Our chart for LFT results from demands off frustration when things do not happen and they're usually followed by catastrophic izing tarts. When it does, it's usually based on beliefs like the world owes me contentment and happiness, or things should be, as I want them to be on a current standard when they are not Lord Discomfort. Tolerance, on the other hand, or lbgt, results from demands that one should not experience emotional or physical discomfort. While catastrophe izing when this discomfort does occur, is this clear? So far, it's usually based on beliefs like I should be able to feel happy all the time, or I must be able to feel comfortable all the time. Or discomfort and pain are awful and intolerable, and I must avoid them at all. Costs are I must never feel bad. North is how these statements are shaped whenever you're talking to your plant. These are usually the hearts that are going to be causing their own disturbances. It's the language that they're using, how they're framing their sentences, how they're creating their understanding off the world that is around them. That is what you really want. A pinpoint here. All right, the two subtypes that we have discussed here. LFT and L DT are similar and closely related. You could even say that one expression is used to refer to both. Now there are certain problems that are caused by discomfort disturbances, and we need to acknowledge and recognize them in order to bring about change within our client. The first is called discomfort Anxiety. This entails emotional tension that results from the perception that once comfort or life is threatened, next is worrying. We often worry and we end up putting into our heads while things would really turn out in an awful manner. And I cant standard if things turn out that way. So I must worry in case that outcome happens. Third, we need to acknowledge avoidance. People end up behaving in a way where they want to avoid certain events and circumstances that are too hard or too difficult to overcome. Additionally, we also need to recognize that there may be secondary disturbances. This is another unique aspect off Ari Bt essentially we have a problem about the problem and we have an emotional reaction whenever we are experiencing a problem. So what this means is that whenever a person is feeling anxious they may feel anxious about their anxiety or let's say they're depressed. They may feel depressed about their depression. Does this make sense? Also, if we look at some of the other problems that are caused by discomfort disturbances, we recognize that there may be short range enjoyment and that, as people might end up seeking immediate pleasure or they might avoid pain in the short term and they might end up causing themselves long term distress. So this may manifest in the form off really abusing alcohol, taking a lot of drugs and even food abuse. So we deal with our problems in an ineffective way, and this is going to be very typical off your clients. They may end up engaging in behaviors that might help them escape the reality of the situation in the short term, but they are going to ignore the consequences in the long term, and they end up engaging in the short term relief. So that is not really going to solve that problem. Does this make sense? Also, we need to recognize your that our clients may engage in procrastination. They may put off difficult tasks for later, or they may want to not experience certain unpleasant situations now, so they think I'll do it later. This is going to be pretty typical off challenging things that you may want your client to do as a part of their homework. Assignments are certain things that they would like Toa achieve in therapy but are not really ready to do right now. It's important to use the forces off pleasure and pain, help them exercise their power of choice in these situations, to get past that procrastination and really get to where they want to go. All right. Lastly, we have negativity and complaining. Well, you're not going to be any stranger to this once you start practicing Ari Beauty in the field because your clients have going to come to you feeling really distressed about the smallest off hindrances and the smallest of setbacks. They're going to feel like they're being cheated off the richness off life because they're constantly going to be complaining and comparing themselves to other people. I mean, why me? What did I do to deserve this? Why is my life despite while everyone else seems so happy, So people are going to end up making these comparisons And if you're going to be dealing with clients who are engaging in any of these problems, you're gonna have to systematically tackle each and every one of them by using the various principles that Ari beauty presents. All right, so practice this revised all of this and I'll see you in the next lecture. 11. 3 Major Musts: Now we all express ourselves differently. But the irrational beliefs that upset us can be placed under three major headings. Each of these core beliefs contains an absolutist IQ must or demand. Now, before we jump into each of these beliefs, we need to acknowledge their different aspects that will be using toe Understand each of these major musts. The 1st 1 is somebody. The second are the sub beliefs that underlie the beliefs themselves. Third, we need to look at the emotional consequences that end up being experienced as a result off engaging with certain beliefs and, lastly, the behavioral consequences, the outer world reality, how it has shaped as a result off certain actions that we are clients steak. As I shared briefly in the previous lecture, the three global beliefs are I am, People are, and life is from this we can construct the three major musts that govern certain beliefs that people have about themselves about other people or even the world around them. And they are. I must people must and life must. This can take the shape off. I must do well and win the approval off others or else I am no good This is the I must believe the somebody of this includes people might be inflexible about themselves. They may place unrealistic expectations on themselves. They're going to be over concerned with others, opinion off who they really are. Rest people, their self worth is going to be measured by how they achieve certain things and how popular they are. And typically they're not going to be really accepting off their own Selves if they do not meet the needs off this belief. Now let's look at some off the sub beliefs that govern all of these. I'm must ideas. All right. First off, I must have love and approval from everybody. What are some off the sub beliefs that we can recognize here? I need someone to love me, and I must not do anything that would cause others to think less of me. Second, I must be competent and successful. A sub belief here could be I must have an important skill or talent. Number three. I must successfully avoid unpleasant or undesirable situations. Once again, the sub beliefs here, maybe unpleasant and undesirable situations upset me, and I can't control my emotions in difficult situations. Number four I must avoid dangerous are life threatening situations. If I do encounter such situations, I must worry about them to make them go away. Number five, I must think, feel and act the same way as I always have. The sub belief here is that my past has such a strong influence on me that I cannot change . Now. What are some off the emotional consequences off holding on to the I must core belief. This can include depression, anxiety or panic. Self downing and the behavioral consequences of the same can include risk avoidance, shyness, procrastination and assertiveness and even workaholism. Now let's look at the others. Must others must do the right thing, or else they are no good and deserve to be punished. The summary of this can include people may usually be inflexible and unrealistic. They may assume one's authority over other people. People like to feel like they're in control, and if they don't feel like they're in control, that's going to cause some emotional distress. People assume that there is a clear cut difference between right and wrong, so they have a moralistic viewpoint off how things need to be, and if others don't meet this criteria, then they are committing something wrong. Your client may even assume that people need toe have this ability to differentiate between right and wrong, and they need to meet my needs off understanding how I feel things are right in certain situations and certain things are wrong in others. Your clients may also place themselves at the centre off the universe with regard to others , and they may only look to cater their own needs and wants. This can usually lead to consequences, like conflicts with other people, because they see themselves as the center of the universe. Sometimes people who experience others must believe they're also going to be not accepting off the fact that humans make mistakes, that we are all fallible in some way. Now, what are some off the sub beliefs that govern this number one? Everyone should treat everyone else, especially me in a fair and considerate manner. If they act unfairly, they're no good. The second sub belief here is that if they do act unfairly or inconsiderate Lee, they deserve to be punished. Society are the universe must ensure that they get the punishment that they deserve. Some of the other beliefs that we can examine under this are other people must not act incompetently or unwisely. What are some off the sub beliefs that we can recognize here? If they act incompetently or unwisely, they're worthless idiots. They should be ashamed off themselves. They should expect none off the good things in life number three talented people must use their talent. Everyone must reach their potential. And people who don't live up to their potential have little or no value as human beings. Also, other people must not criticize me. And if they unjustly criticize me, they are no good and they don't deserve anything. Good toe. Happen to them again. Notice how these sub beliefs are playing out within these core beliefs off. Others must. Now, what are some of the emotional consequences that our clients may experience? These may include anger, impatience, bitterness, resentment and so many other emotions. Also, what are the behavioral consequences that we can recognize here? This can include aggression and violence, bigotry and intolerance, bullying and even nagging. Now, finally, let's look at life must life must be easy without discomfort and inconvenience. What this means is that people are usually going to be inflexible and unrealistic when this life must believe is not met. People may overestimate one's right toe, a trouble free life that they may believe that if life does not seem perfect at all times, that if I do encounter problems, then that's not going to really be good for me. That's not going to be okay with the reality that I am creating in my head, even though reality is obviously different. At the same time, you need to understand that most people underestimate their own ability to cope with adversity. There are going to be challenges in life, and there's no way around it. People are usually not going to be accepting off life's sudden changes. Now, what are some of the sub beliefs that maybe experienced under some of these core beliefs associated with life? Must things must go the way I want them to go? What's the sub belief here? I need what I want, and it's awful if I don't get what I want. I must constantly worry about life's predicaments, that is, I must control, avoid or change life's predicaments. Additionally, I must make myself upset over life's predicaments. Making myself upset gives me the power to control, avoid or change life's predicaments once again. Nor does how these are beliefs are manifesting how they really govern certain core beliefs that are guiding one's behavior. Number three. I must avoid rather than face and deal with life's difficulties and responsibilities. I must not be inconvenienced or made uncomfortable. I cannot discipline myself. I can't stand the present been that is necessary In order to enjoy future gin, it must be easy to change things that I don't like. Difficulties must not exist. I am powerless to change my circumstances and any effort to change my circumstances. It's pointless because it is doomed to fail. Lastly, justice, fairness, equality, democracy and other right values, court and court must prevail. That is the sub belief your might be. I can't stand it when my values are trodden on North is how in each of these categories, all that we have discussed so far all of the sub beliefs actually end up combining together , and they end up creating these larger beliefs or core beliefs that we understand. What are some of the emotional consequences? Weaken Decca guys here. First off, we have low frustration, tolerance second self pity third depression and discomfort, anxiety, the behavioral consequences off. Experiencing emotions like this include procrastination, shirking drug, alcohol and even overindulgence in feel good behaviors. Why did I go so deep into each one of thes as I went about explaining, I must people must and life must. It's because everything that I shared in this lecture is somehow interconnected, and you might actually see these beliefs, core beliefs and sub beliefs playing out in your own sessions. You might actually see these emotional and behavioral consequences being presented by a plan. That's why revising the stuff recognizing water client might actually be going through and how you may be going through all of this in your own personal life. Understanding each and every one of these individual nuances is what is going to shape you into a great ari CBT helper. With that, said revised this once again, go through it and perfect it within the framework that you are trying to create off your understanding off your own self and your client. I'll see you in the next lecture 12. The Levels of Insight: there are three levels off insight that Ari BT seeks to bring about. We'll be getting into further detail with regard to what this entails when we discuss the ABC model. The first insight is that an activating event a that is the event that triggers a problem for our client does not cause the consequence. In fact, it only contributes to it. The belief be, however, is the basic cause and directly leads to a consequence. What this means is that the foundation off all of the problems that your client might be facing our because off the belief that they possess and specifically the irrational beliefs that they may have, that are contributing to the consequences that they're currently experiencing. So in order to unlock their problems and really get them to see what things are, you need to display their beliefs, tow them and show them that that is directly leading toe the consequence that they're experiencing, even though they may think that it is the event that is the problem. The second insight is that you can create and maintain your irrational beliefs by actively re influencing yourself with them. This is another thing that your client may be going through in that they're constantly playing these thoughts out in their mind, the solidifying things until it actually becomes a belief this once again has a lot to do with confirmation bias in that when we experience a negative consequence and it is preceded by an irrational belief, we get directly influenced by and stand in that belief. All right, like if you had a thought that bungee jumping is scary and the more you play with that in your mind, you make it worse and worse over and over again, playing out the fact that you may fall, it can turn into a powerful belief that is irrational, because perhaps bungee jumping may not be as scary as you think. Maybe you won't actually fall, but your belief is constantly influencing you to think a certain way. Does this make sense again? This is reiterating the fact that our beliefs create our reality and what we think is everything. The third insight is that in order to change your disturbed feelings, behaviors and irrational beliefs, you almost always have to resort to a great deal off work and practice. This involves disputation. Disputation involves making someone recognized the irrational beliefs that have led to the creation off the rial self. That is the current reality that your client, maybe in and how they can go about shifting into their ideal self. We'll be getting into disputation later. But for now, let's get into an assignment to help build your own insight. I'd like you to think about one incident where you blamed an event that led to a consequence. C How did you feel? How could you have behaved differently? What would have changed the consequence of what happened? I'd like you to go about answering these questions. Additionally, water is one belief that is holding you back right now that, you know with absolute certainty is an irrational belief. How's it preventing you from getting what you want? Lastly, what will it take for you to think and behave differently under the above mentioned circumstances? I truly believe that if we are to give our clients the insight that they need, we need to first find insight within ourselves. We need to go about correcting ourselves so that we can walk the talk and actually deliver massive value wherever we are in session. All right, so answer these questions builder clarity, and I'll see you in the next lecture 13. Interactionism, Constructivism and Hedonism: There are three final fundamentals to getting acquainted with how Ari Beauty works. The first is psychological interaction ism that is all thoughts, feelings and behaviors are interrelated. This means that nothing that we experience happens in isolation. What we thought off at a certain point of time felt a certain way about in the past can impact how we behave in the future. How we think off a specific behavior now will cause us to reflect on how we behaved in the past. So each aspect be it your thoughts, your emotions and your behaviors. They can't be taken into isolation. Each one interacts with and impacts the other toe at all times. All right. So if you're interacting with a client, you need to recognize that each thing that they do, what they think about what they feel and how they behave, everything is connected. The second thing is Constructivism, and that is we build our own constructs and are therefore responsible for our own demands. In short, we are responsible and we create our own reality. With the power off heart, emotion and behavior, we can construct both positive and negative emotions, resourceful and under source ful emotions. See, we are learning from our environment constantly, but we make our demands and create our own disturbances. Does this make sense? So we end up creating our own beliefs that impact our actions and the results that we see at the same time we have the freedom to change our construct. We have the freedom to change our reality. And we are responsible for what becomes off us as individuals. If you realized this one amazing power, the power of choice, right? This idea takes on an important role in a session with a client because as a helper, it is important for us to help make them realize that they are the ones responsible for their situation. That whatever consequences have happened are really. But there is an option for them to change their reality and how they feel about things. Now all you need to do is empower them with the power of choice. Show them what they are capable off in order to decide the reality and allow them to discover this amazing power off creation. The third aspect is responsible hedonism. Here the focus is not just on helping people achieve pleasure that a short lived, but also on long term hedonism for living a healthy life. What this means is that whenever we deal with that lance, we make sure that we're not just focusing on the chart. I'm giving them these banded solutions. What we are focused on is giving them our disturbance free life. Ah, place where they can end up seeking pleasure that is going to help them achieve everything that they want, using real world strategies that can really help them. Hedonism can be understood as a set off thoughts and behaviors that minimize pain and maximize pleasure and the pursuit off the same. In Ari Beauty, we approach this attribute responsibly. For example, if your client was this guy who was trying to lose some extra fact that he has on him, it would make sense for the larger pleasure off feeling fit and healthy. In order to experience that, he has to go through some pain off, giving up fatty foods and exercising a lot more often. Does this make sense? So we have to negotiate past the persons in need quality and this need for hedonism. Here we have to acknowledge the end goal that he is trying to achieve and what it might actually take in reality to help achieve that. You know, it's easy for us to say, Hey, just give up sweets for a few days and you'll be just fine. He may see some desserts in the short term here, however. Remember in Ari Beauty, we're not just looking to make the problem go away, but tackle it at its source, take it by the roots and pull it out to ensure that the client lives a life that is problem free. Look, it is up to us to negotiate past the short term pleasures and the things that are holding a client back to help them see and realize the bigger picture. All right, so as helpers, we help them work through this and empower them to create the change that they want. With all of these fundamental ideas and concepts of Ari beauty down, we can start our deep dive into what ar e CVT actually entails and how it works. Revise all of this if you feel that there's something that you haven't understood, and I'll see you in the next lecture 14. Four Major Irrational Beliefs: the core beliefs, rules and ideas that we have about how things should be, have a germ of truth in them are not love and approval, good things to get. Is it not better to succeed and be treated well by others and actually find ideal solutions North, though the way most off the core beliefs are worded, all except a few are stated as demands characterized by words like should must need. Some also contained several other types of belief that we shall address shortly. Ari CBT proposes that there are four types of evaluative thinking that our dysfunctional for human beings, the first of which is demanding this demanding. This refers to the way people hold unconditional shorts and absolutist IQ musts. It operates from the belief that certain things must or must not happen and that certain conditions are absolute necessities. Nor does the wording funnily. Albert Ellis calls this masturbation people who exhibit extreme demanding this feel entitled to success, love and approval, as well as many other useful, resourceful emotions. They believe that their demands must be met under any circumstances to take this a step further demanding This implies that certain laws off the universe must be adhered to. These demands can be directed both internally on outwardly. Also, ari. Beauty and compassion is three basic must, As I mentioned previously, they are demands about the self demands about others and finally, demands about the world and life demands about the self will lead to what is called Igor Disturbance. The part of the mind that keeps the pain off reality it be, and demands about others as well as the world will lead to primarily discomfort. Disturbance, that is, it becomes a challenge to deal with frustration, emotional and physical discomfort. Again, this is based on what I mentioned previously. Also, as well as being involved with core beliefs. Demands also occur with beliefs about specific situations. For example, a general core belief like people should always behave in a correct and right fashion. That may lead to the specific belief that he should not have done what he did. Does this make sense? Now? Let's look at awful izing. The second irrational belief here awful izing occurs when we exaggerate the consequences off the past, present or future events, seeing things as the worst that could happen, you know, awful izing is usually characterized by awful, terrible and even horrible. And you may want to look out for this in your own sessions, for example. I mean, that was just a terrible experience. Listening to my mother badger me on and on and on. I mean, it was awful. I don't wish that upon anybody. See here. The mother may have actually been slightly nagging, but the nature off irrational thinking makes it such that we exaggerate the nature off the events that took place and how the events were so bad. Catastrophic izing them, even though they probably weren't. I noticed this in your own life. Have you ever done this? Listen, if you ever find airplanes engaging and talk like this, it indicates that they are probably awful izing. Now it's important to keep in mind here that it does not take away from their experience. It could just be that things are as awful as they say they are. But remember here, as Ari CBT helpers, we want them to start thinking differently. So once they have been acknowledged for what they say and feel slowly, things can be shifted away from their irrational way of thinking toe a rational thought process and getting them to a mental place where things start working out for them. All right, so in the same situation, you could frame it like this. So what you're saying is that your mother talking to you in this way is causing you to feel a little stressed. Here was shifting that awful ization into a more realistic as well as a more controlled chaos kind of situation. All right, the third irrational belief is discomfort, intolerance, discomfort. Intolerance refers to what is called can't stand it itis on. Say that again it refers to award is called current standard I dis. It's a wave off thinking where they can take what they're experiencing or they cannot bear some circumstance or event again. This is very common where people can't really handle the reality of the world. It often follows off lazing and can fuel demands that certain things need not happen or should not happen again. Look for the wording that your client gives you the final one is people rating people. Rating refers to the process off. Evaluate ings, one entire self or someone else based uncertain ideas. They end up judging the total value or worth off a person. It's a form off over generalization where we evaluate a specific trait, behavior or even an action according to some standard off desire ability or based on some kind off worth that a person needs to have our exhibit. Based on that, we end up evaluating the overall value off a person. For example, I did a bad thing. Therefore, I am a bad person. Some of these can actually take a twister, turn and become crude and even like he is bad because he's a Muslim. He failed an exam, which means he is stupid and worthless. Look, people rating is one of the worst irrational beliefs because it can cause a lot off emotional, mental and sometimes even physical pain to a person who's on the receiving end of comments like this. So it reiterates the importance off language and RDC beauty and how it can impact everyone involved. All right, understand this. It's vital as a helper toe pinpoint people rating, particularly while making false accusations about oneself and others that are concerned. So if your client is doing this, you need to point it out and really make them realize that, and this is not really going to serve them or anyone else. People underplay the importance of how the social dynamic and atmosphere can influence someone. Therefore, whenever you find such over generalizations being made and they are in relation to the outcome or overall outlook off your land, point them out and work towards helping your client change them. All right. Lastly, people rating can lead to self downing, depression, defensiveness, grandiosity, hostility or even over concerned with approval and disapproval. And it's going to be a key factor in eager disturbance again, the reality that a client creates for themselves about themselves, especially in relation to other people and the world around them. It's going to be really important to acknowledge, and this eager disturbance can really cause a lot of problems. So start recognizing how people rating is creating problems either in relationship to the people involved or the client themselves. So once again, these four irrational beliefs off demanding this awful izing discomfort, intolerance and people rating are going to be crucial for you to recognize, see an Ari beauty demanding. This has traditionally been seen as the main type off irrational thinking with the other three types deriving from it. For example, you are only likely to rate yourself as worthless for failing at something that you believe you must always succeed it. Or you would only be prone to regarding discomfort as unbearable, because you believe that you must not be uncomfortable. In my experience, it seems that there is almost always a demand at the root off a person's emotional or behavioral problems. But some flexibility is appropriate for the few occasions when, nor demand can be identified by the client or the helper. All right, so maker choices wisely and go about making the right decisions as a helper. Here's your assignment for the day. I'd like you to start off by identifying two absolutist IQ must that you have. How could you look at things differently given the same circumstances at the same time, I'd like you to identify two incident or aspects that you tend to exaggerate and awful Ace . How could you look at things differently? Thirdly, identified two things that you absolutely cannot stand. How can you look at things differently under these circumstances? Lastly, I'd like you to identify two things based on which you rate other people. What are these rules? Where do you do so and how could you look at things differently? Complete This assignment recognized the four major irrational beliefs, and I'll see you in the next lecture. 15. Self Talk Identification Techniques: self talk is referred to the conversation that we have with ourselves. What we say to ourselves has the power to shape our reality. Our thoughts believes on emotional experience. Behaviors, etcetera are all constantly molded by ourself. Doc and this bigs burn for the worst, especially if you're dealing with a challenging client because they usually have self doc. That is no good. So we're going to understand this better while we work with our planes, start speaking to them and then recognizing how their self talk actually ends up playing out. Often our clients have a hard time expressing themselves, and you'll notice this in your own sessions. And they need help discussing some off the challenges that they're facing, as well as the emotions that they are feeling. They may not come out with it immediately. So using some self dock identification techniques that will be discussing in this lecture, we can make a lot of headway in the session. All right, let's start this off by looking at visual imagery. This is, as the name suggests, we get our claim toe paint, a clear image in their mind and therefore in our own with regard to what we want to know here, we can get specific details that we would otherwise have unavailable. You could say Imagine the last time when you last felt upset in your mind. Just take a moment and played like a movie in your mind as if you were the lead actor. What actually happened? Just start talking as if it's playing in your mind right now and share your thoughts. This is how you go about engaging. Outlined in a visual imagery, it is usually accompanied by hypnotic relaxation. The second self dock identification technique is inference, chaining and sentence completion exercises. It involves asking specific open ended questions to get the meaning that your client gives to their different situations that they're facing under underlying thoughts as well. For example, you could ask, So what does this mean to you? What is the most disturbing thing about this situation? So what then? And that was not okay for you? Because can you complete this statement for me? Does this make sense? This allows us to connect the dots, so to speak, with regard to what our client is experiencing. The third met her toe, identify self talk, is using simple examples and stories. When your client finds it hard to vocalize their hearts and really get to the root of their beliefs, examples and stories can be posed off other instances that are similar to the problems that they're currently experiencing to help them gather their hearts regarding the disturbing situation that they're dealing with. All right, this is a free flowing technique where you are going to allow your claim to just talk, talk and talk and talk and just describe different incidents using stories and examples to indicate waters actually going on. From that, we can work together with them to decipher the meaning associated with a problematic situation. The thoughts that they're running through in their mind and the emotions, that feeling as well as the behaviors that they're engaging. Does this make sense? The final self talk identification technique? It's called a two story alternative. This involves self talk relating to rangers off emotional intensity that may be sure to the client toe help enable them to learn different identification techniques off looking for beliefs and emotions that are associated with their self talk. So this one depends on your own creativity and how you want to frame things. If you're talking about, say, anger and a situation where your client was angry after having been cut off in traffic, an alternative can be presented in that we get our plan to describe the story and how things were to play out if he was calm under the same circumstances. So let's say this person cut your client off in traffic. But the remained come. They did not react, and they did not show their anger. This can give them insight into their own irrational beliefs and their own irrational behavior, and how they can also deal with their problems differently as well as more effectively. All right, so these are the four self dock identification techniques. Remember, you can mix and match them in a session, and you can use them as sport the context as well as how your client is responding. Remember, whenever you feel that things are unclear, you need more information. You need to clarify pieces off information, and the client needs more clarity on himself or herself. These techniques will be an asset for you. Very, very powerful stuff. So go ahead and start playing around with them as you see fit in your sessions. OK, here's your assignment for the day. Whenever you're faced with a challenge, what do you end up seeing to yourself when you feel overcome? A challenge? Then what do you say to yourself? And when you finally do overcome a challenge, what do you end up seeing yourself? I'd like you to use some off the self talk identification techniques to recognize your own self talk builder clarity. Remember, if you're ever confronted by a client who can't seem to overcome their problems, and US helper, you don't believe they can be helped. It's possible you need to work on your own self talk. This exercise will not only give you clarity on your own self, but we'll give you an indication with regard to where you stand on what's possible and what isn't especially if you're working with a client who can't seem to overcome their own challenges. Look, coming from a place off power and conviction in a session while coaching your client will give them a new outlook on their challenges, one that they have never seen or even felt before. This has nothing or little to do with any of these techniques that I'm talking about here it comes from the confidence that you have in yourself as well as imparting some off the knowledge that you have your client. And that comes from a result off how you see and how you look at things. All right, all of this is connected with your own self talk. Remember your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and yourself, Doc. Impact everything so strive to grow as an individual so that you can grow as an RTC beauty helper. All right, And see you in the next lecture. 16. Emotions in REBT: all emotions have a purpose. Every emotion we experience is a part of the human experience, and it falls into the very foundation off why we do what we do. Ari Beauty gives a lot of weight ege to emotions and seeks to empower one's emotional awareness as well as maker clients more emotionally intelligent. One of the mainstays off how we can achieve this is by refraining from opinionated labeling as something being a good or a bad emotion. And instead we focus on the health off emotions all right, understanding whether the clients emotions are leading toe any sustained emotional disturbances that is important. Dr. Ellis has focused on differentiating between healthy, negative and unhealed in negative emotions. So when Ellis spoke about this, he focused on something like concern and anxiety. Tolerance versus anxiety, disappointment and sadness versus depression, disappointment and embarrassment versus shame, annoyance, irritation, disappointment or even healthy anger versus frustration and unhealthy anger, disappointment and sadness versus hurt. He also looked at other emotions, like regret or remorse versus guilt, healthy envy versus unhealthy envy, concern versus jealousy. Now what is different here is in part yes, the labels that we're using to describe how we feel about something that mere disturb us. But on a deeper level, what we're looking to do is help our client with the emotional intensity caused by irrational thinking. I'll say that again. What we're looking to help our client with here is the emotional intensity caused by irrational thinking. For example, if your plant C has a crush on a really handsome man who is already in a relationship, and she is explaining how she experiences a strong wave of jealousy brought on by irrational tarts that he should not be with this other woman. Well, it's up to us as a helper to acknowledge and help her work through these emotions. The emotional goal here is to recognize that what she is better off experiencing is concerned about her singlehood are the fact that the person whom she has a crush on is not really single versus experiencing watches experiencing right now. Ah, more extreme emotional state off jealousy. All right, you could ask her questions like, What do you think would be a better way to feel about this situation? You know, if you had to feel differently about this, how would you feel? What would you do differently now that they're feeling all of these emotions? How can you feel better moving forward North is how these questions are goal oriented with regard to shifting our client out of these emotions that they're experiencing. All of these questions are grounded in the here and now. All right, so how you frame these questions is super duper important or like. And that's just what we strive to do well, performing emotional work with our clients, we slowly work them out of these extreme emotional states and in tow, more resourceful emotional states where they're thinking differently about their problems. We make them realize that there is a choice about how they could feel versus how they feel right now. Again, we're using the power of choice constantly as we use the different techniques associated with R E CVT. Keep in mind that we are not downplaying are feeling to acknowledge the enormity off our client feels. Look, In fact, it's quite the contrary. Here we are, giving them a powerful sense off understanding off how they feel right now as a means to help them discover a more resourceful state moving forward. Does this make sense when one is in a more resourceful emotional state, they are likely to take different and even better actions, and therefore they'll end up seeing better results no matter what. Understand this, while coaching your client breaking and shifting them out of their emotional state will probably be the most challenging thing to do in session. That's why you need to stick to your guns as a helper and work with them in order to see things differently. All right, because if you can shift them out of these emotional states, then you can get them to look at their beliefs differently. But don't worry, because by combining all of these are the CBT techniques. And if you find all of this challenging soon as you work on all of this stuff, you'll find that it's a cinch to achieve any of this stuff with their claim. We still have an assignment for you to complete. I'd like you to start off by identifying three problematic incidents in your recent past, where you experienced extremely unhealed in negative emotions. Nor does the language identify any label these emotions based on what you thought you were feeling at that point of time. Discover how you can change this label from unhealthy negative toe healthy. Negative. All right, What will this label actually be? Remember that sadness is always going to be better than depression. Find out what those emotions are and discover how you can re frame and relabel them to something that is not as catastrophic. Lastly, what would you have to do or what would have to happen for you to feel better or never feel this wagon builder clarity? Examine your own experience, complete this assignment, and I'll see you in the next lecture. 17. Goal Setting and Problem Description: setting goals is going to be an integral part off how you go about identifying problems and really getting Atlanta, where they actually want to go. You start this process off by asking for the problem, and you just let your plan talk and you end up listening. Dear client Describe their problem Inver backed him. What this means is that after you collect basic information about your plant like there name, age, marital status or other things, you can just ask them a question like So what brings you here today, or what made you decide to come to me for a session, or what seems to be the matter or the problem? In this way, you complete a very simple first step to getting your client to talk about their problem and really explain things in their own words. Once they describe things, then you can go about defining and agreeing upon the target problem. Remember, you want to make the problem specific by asking for a recent example off the target problem . So after your client has shared their basic viewpoint off what the problem is, then you really your own understanding Off it, you define the problem based on what the client has shared. And then once your client agrees with you, then you can move forward. Here we refrain from working with the client and their practical problems first, because it makes up what we call inelegant therapy. And that is different from the elegant therapy process off Ari civility. All right, look, this rule can be broken if and when your client shows signs are really distress. As an ari CBT helper, you need to use your own judgment to help provide some immediate relief if the circumstances do actually dictated. Does this make sense? The next step is to check the goal of the client and agree upon it with respect to the problem defined. Now, your plan to share their problem with you, you've agreed with them that Okay, this is what you've shared so far. And then the client once again agrees with what you have shared about their problem. Now you can go about setting the goal here. You can start to bridge the gap between the goal in the problem itself. You can achieve this by asking a simple question like, what would you like to achieve from discussing this problem with me or what expectations do you have with regard to working with someone like me? Or how would you see this session helping you with your problem? Get them to bridge that gap between the problem and the goal that they're trying to achieve . Let them start to crystallize in their mind how life can actually be like once this problem is solved. So once you ask this, you can strive to ensure that the goals which are set are going to be in line with water client game complaining off. All right, so you work with your client and then you start engaging them in such a way that they start seeing that problems differently. And then they start making riel world goals. With that, your client has something to work on in every session. So the goals can be related to the current session or even the goals for the next session And the overarching goals off how life could be like ones. Therapy is over. So once again, you end up asking for the problem and you listen for water client has to share. And then once they've shared that, you defined and agree upon the real problem that they're facing and then you agree upon goal, and then you define it based on the problem that has been shared. These are the three primary steps when it comes to setting a goal and understanding the problem in our DBT. It's a pretty straightforward process that is going to allow you to engage and set the tone for your sessions. I'll see you in the next lecture. 18. The ABCDE Model: As you start applying Ari BT in your own life with their clients, you'll start to realize that it's not just a set of techniques. It's also a comprehensive theory off human behavior. Ari BT proposes a bio psychosocial explanation off causation that is, ah, combination off biological, psychological and social factors that are involved in the way we humans feel and behave. The most basic minimus off our TBT, which it shares with other cognitive behavioral theories, is that almost all human emotions and behaviors are the result of what people think, assume or believe. This can be about themselves, other people on the world in general. It is what people believe about situations that they face, not the situation themselves that determines how they feel and behave all right. Ari Beauty, however, also argues that a person's biology also effects that feelings and behaviors an important point as it is a reminder toe the helper that there are limitations to how far a human being can change. A person's belief system is seen to be a product of both biological inheritance on learning throughout life. Ah, useful way to illustrate the role of cognition is by using Ellis is ABC model. In this framework, A represents an actual event or experience on the person's inference is our interpretations as to what is happening be represents the evaluative beliefs that follow from these inferences, See, on the other hand, represents the consequences. Are emotions and the behaviors that follow from those evaluative beliefs The D stands for disputation, how we go about breaking past an irrational belief that is causing and maintaining the problem or a problematic reaction. Finally, we create an E, which is an effective new belief. Is this clear so far? For now, we'll be directing our attention toe ABC here a represents the activating or antecedent event what actually happened, for example, Ah friend passed me in the street without acknowledging me. This leads to an inference about what happened. He's ignoring me, and therefore he does not like me. This can systematically lied toe a person, creating a belief Be about a, that is, I'm unacceptable as a friend, so I must be worthless as a person. This is the evaluation that the person has made about the event. Finally, what are the emotions that are experienced as a result? What are the behaviors that a person engages in this is represented by the consequences c Here in this situation, this could lead to depression or it goodly toe. Avoiding people in General North that it does not cause, see a actually triggers off B and then because the sea does this make sense, That means that the antecedent event does not cause the consequence. Instead, the antecedent event actually triggers off the belief, and the belief is the one that causes the consequence. Also, ABC episodes do not stand alone. They run in chains with a C or consequence, often becoming part off the antecedent event. Off another episode, we observe our own emotions and behaviors, and we end up reacting to them. For instance, the person in the example above good observed their avoidance off. Other people interpret this is weak and engage in self downing behavior. All right, No. How do we put this all together? Let's look at another example, using the ABC model to show how this works. Your neighbor phones and asks if you will baby sit for the rest of the day. You had already planned to catch up with some gardening. Instead, you infer that if I say? No, she will think badly of me. You end up evaluating your inference off the situation by saying something in your head like I couldn't stand toe. Have her see me. A selfish your inference and evaluation that follows are the result off holding onto the core belief to feel OK about myself? I need to be liked, so I must avoid disapproval from any other source. This is another example off eager disturbance. Also, you may end up feeling anxious and you might end up saying yes to this person. That's why it's important to acknowledge how the belief can actually influence our emotions and our behaviours in somebody. People view themselves on the world around them at three levels inferences, evaluations and the core beliefs. Your main objective as a helper, however, is to deal with the underlying semi permanent or even general core beliefs that are the continuing cause off the planes on wondered reactions. All right, R E CVT places greater emphasis on dealing with evaluative type thinking. Dan do other cognitive behavioral approaches, Ari bt places greater emphasis on dealing with evaluative type thinking, dine do other cognitive behavioral approaches. But since this is our deep CBT you can choose to do both. For the most part, just CBT focuses more on the inferential thinking. In fact, in Ari Beauty, the clients inferences are regarded as part off the antecedent event a rather than the belief be, whereas in general CBT inferences are seen as a part off the belief. Additionally, Ari Beauty especially underscores the centrality off demanding nous over other types of thinking. However, both Ari BT and General CBT are ultimately concerned with the underlying core beliefs. I'll say that again. Both are TBD and General CBT are ultimately concerned with the underlying core beliefs, and that's what you're striving to help change within your claim. Does this make sense? Recognize that most beliefs are outside conscious awareness. Their habitual are automatic, often consisting off underlying rules about how the world and life should be. With practice, though, people can learn toe uncover such subconscious core beliefs. All right, when we work with our planes, we can use the ABC modern toe break down and describe water Client is doing just go about working with them to build their awareness. Later, you can introduce disputation D and an effective new belief e in order to help them with change. All right, revise and master the A B C D e. Model. Because this is the bread and butter off Ari CBT. Okay, Now let's get into your assignment. Your assignment here is to break down a problematic incident in your own life using the ABC former What was the activating or aren't decedent event A. And what actually happened to you at that given point of time? Also, based on what happened, what were your inferences about the situation then? How did you evaluate things in your mind? What were your beliefs about the NDC evident event? A. And how did you end up playing things out in your mind? Finally, what emotions and behaviors did you experience? An engaging respectively. Complete this. Engage with this assignment and I'll see you in the next lecture. 19. Assessment and Disputation of Irrational Beliefs: Now that we have the ABC model down, we can start to examine, assessment and disputation off various irrational beliefs. How does this actually work? Let's look into this. You start this off by collecting all of the consequences and assess them in relation to their activating event Here. As you start the process, Ofari Beauty with your plant, you want a deep dive into the client's perspective with some powerful questions. You could ask something like this to get the information that you need to know in order to better understand your client. Now these questions can end up taking the farm off. What did you feel when this incident took place? What did you do when you experience this? What were you thinking at that given point of time, Look at how, as we look to collect, the consequences were going deep into the emotions, behaviors and the self talk, as well as the thoughts off our clients. These questions relate strongly toe those specific pieces off information that are relevant to the LGBT process, which ones in specific off course. This is going to be specific to our understanding off these three major entities, as I just mentioned. All right? No. The second thing to do in this process is to assess the activating event itself here. It's important to remember that when you're looking to inquire about the activating event, you want toe assess and identify the specific critical events that caused the client of feel painful emotions. I'll say that again. You want to assess and identify the specific critical events that cause the clarion tow, feel painful emotions and cause them the greatest distress versus just looking for the arts situation where your client might feel a hint of distress. Does this make sense? So you're deep dive and you pinpoint the most critical incident that was relevant whenever your client was experiencing these problematic emotions, engaging in problematic behaviors as well as thinking problematic thoughts. Now, when you're assessing the activating event, you could ask questions like this. What were you most disturbed about when this took place? What about the situation was most challenging for you? What was most disturbing for you about the situation we're fishing for details. Additionally, we can use methods like inference, chaining and self dock identification techniques to get their clients irrational beliefs about a particular activating event. Now it's time to assess the irrational beliefs themselves. Here we deep dive into our clients. Understanding and their worldview analyze therefore irrational beliefs. Look at demanding nous awful izing discomfort and tolerance and people rating and see how it is affecting our client on a personal level. Is this clear? So far, we have to just identify which off these beliefs our client is being governed by. That is maintaining the problem. All right, pinpoint these to gain a better understanding off your client on their situation. This can also tell you how long your client will take to solve their problem or how many sessions they may need to come in. For once you have identified these irrational beliefs, you can establish a connection between the belief itself and the consequence. This is done before the process off disputation begins. Make your client realize how the problems that they're experiencing are directly related to the irrational beliefs right down to a cause. It'll level. This means that their beliefs are going to directly lead to a consequence similar toe work they're experiencing right now. For example, if your client is struggling with time management with regard to spending time at home with their spouse and that is leading them to fight with each other all the time. Find out the specific irrational belief that is leading to them fighting all the time and what is actually preventing them from being more happy around each other, All eight. Maybe it could be a demanding this belief about the world here. Like your client believes that companies should let their employees off early in order to spend more time at home. But is that really possible here? You want to connect the consequence to the belief. Maybe he needs to work around his job timings. Maybe he needs to set aside some time for spending time with his spouse. The solution doesn't matter so much here. However, what matters here is bringing the realization that the irrational belief about the world is creating the problem that they are currently going through. At this stage, you can use something called the 100 people technique, which is quite popular in our DBT. In this, you can ask your client if 100 people found themselves in the same situation as you would, they think as you do. Would they feel the same way as you do. And more importantly, would they do as you do so running with the same example here. You want to ask your plant, sir, in your company, among the 100 or so employees that are married or in a relationship just like you are? Would all of them struggle to spend time at home just like you are? I mean, all 100 of them. Your client is likely to answer. Probably not. So think off this as a validation stage that leads into disputation. Is this clear? So far in this way, your track, all the irrational beliefs that your client has that is reliving toe their problem. The final step here is to actually dispute your clients irrational beliefs. We'll be getting into this disputation process in greater detail a little later. For now. Know that a dist age. You will be spending time disputing your clients irrational beliefs to get them to look at their problems and themselves differently. All right for this we will be using techniques mentioned here like realistic and empirical disputes, logical and semantic disputes, pragmatic and functional disputes and even philosophical disputes. Keep in mind all five of these steps that have given you in this lecture because this is the meat and bones off the Ari CBT process. Spend some time revising each of these and see how they can be applied in your own process . All right, make sure you get this down and put it into action. That's the most important thing. These five steps are the primary methods that you can use in order to get yourself results with your plant. And they are super, super powerful. So I'm really excited to see what you can do with this as a helper. Keep working on this, and I'll see you in the next lecture. 20. Giving Assignments in REBT: probably one of the most important Ari CBT strategies is homework. This can include activities such as reading a K, a Bibliotheca P listeningto, audio tracks, a K A audio therapy, self help exercises and even experiential activities as a helper using Orissa beauty. What you need to realize is that therapy sessions are really training sessions. I'll say that again. When you use Ari CBT, you're actually giving your client training all right, between which the client tries out and uses what they have learned in orderto apply in the real world. So you could think off Ari CBT as an action oriented therapy. At the end of the session, it is advisable to give your client something toe work on between sessions and you wonder end up negotiating ah, homework assignment instead of dictating what they should be working on. Instead, ask your client what they would like to work on towards getting to their ultimate therapy goal. Ensure that you make designing homework assignments a collaborative task with your client. Don't just leave the onus on them to design this or tell them directly what they should be doing outside the therapy room. Instead, work with them try and understand where the shortcomings are, where they find a challenging and then work with them in order to design. Ah, powerful homework assignment here. For example, if your client is struggling with anxiety with regard to talking to people in a group, you could use the power of questioning to bring out what they actually intend to work on. This could be broken down like this. So Miss X typically, and Ari CBT We work on having some homework assignments to ensure that the momentum of change that we have initiated today continues moving ahead. So, based on what we have discussed, ready, what would you like to change first? Or you could also see where would you like to begin making a shift? Or you could even say, How do you see your life different moving ahead? This would initiate the thought process off how their life might actually be different or give them a fresh perspective on their disturbance. Now she might reply by saying, Oh, I'm not sure I'm super anxious right now just thinking about it. But I guess I could start by assuming that I'm talking to a group of people once they start thinking this way, you could start to relay your perspective on some off the methods that they can start using in orderto get going. With this, start developing a homework assignment that will actually help improve their situation and engage with the behaviors they need toe in order to shape a new reality. The best way to design homework assignments with your client is to see where they stand in relation to their problem, all right, and how motivated they are in order to make a change. Does this make sense? What you also need to consider is how much effort it might take to solve their problem. Sharing this with your client as you work towards forming a suitable assignment is water going for at the end of the session? Alright, again, it's important to get your client to make the decision on what they want to work on. I'll see that again. It's important to get your client to make the decision on what they want to work on as a helper. At best, all we want to do is suggest or communicate a possible direction. Your plan might want to go in if they don't know what to do her. Where to go. Remember, we want to get them to exercise their power of choice, and that is the rule that we choose to players helpers in orderto empower our clients where you do have a sales. A helper is the kind of technique they can end up using towards making the change that they want. Remember that this is your area off expertise. You know the specific techniques that will get your client from point A to point B, so don't hesitate to help your plant with regard or discovering what mattered is going toe work best for them, talk to them and see what they can apply. Now let's look at our plan. Who's facing anxiety with regard to talking to a group? Once again, her end goal might be to talk freely with a group or even give a speech confidently, based on what she said, that she wants to first picture herself talking to people, you could suggest they're cheaper forms and imagery or visual ization assignment. In this, she teaches herself to calm her mind and body through relax ation, and then she pictures herself talking to a group that is smiling and just appreciating her effort and is in no way judging her. This is going to put her in a powerful position to move ahead with more challenging assignments and make some serious progress towards her. And goal is this clear. So far in this scenario, she is likely to agree with your assignment suggestion because it is in line with what she wanted to do in the first place. Remember, homework assignments can also be used as challenges. For example, after this client makes steady progress in therapy, ah, final challenge could be to give a speech to over 100 people. This will prove to her that the strides she made in session have actually led to her enjoying the pleasure off, overcoming her deepest, darkest fear off speaking to a group. All right, so over the length of the sessions based on your client's progress, you can scale the exercises that their client will be carrying out in order to meet their final goal. With that said, Now we can examine the specific possible assignments that you can give your client in an arty CBD session. This can include cognitive assignments where we're working on the client starts and their self doc. It can also include imagery and emotive assignments where we're working on the client's visualization capacity and how they can manage their emotions in a better way. And finally, we can also give behavioral assignments the most powerful, I believe that can allow your client toe work on their behavioral response to the critical event. Remember that cognitive assignments can include something like recognizing their self talk , where they are exposed to the problematic situation. Or it could even be drawing a cognitive, tired or triangle, creating the connection between the tarts, behaviors and emotions that are maintaining their problem. Subsequently, they condone raw, another cognitive tired that would have them experience a better emotional state by changing their beliefs or thoughts as well as their behavior. Imagery assignments can include practices like mental visualization and even future pacing . Get them to imagine what life could be like in the future. Make them practice in their mind. The thing that they seek most coming to life. This could be a daily affirmation, or it could even be something that they practice 2 to 3 times a day as they imagine the problematic situation in their mind. Then, over a period of time, they would have trained their grain to behave and react differently. And this comes as a result off mental conditioning. You can even incorporate relaxation techniques, sleep hypnosis and so much more in order to make these assignments more effective. Emotional assignments can include having a plant reflect on their own emotions, integrating everything like something off her temperamental analysis. Or they could even start asking others for their perspective or even practice being observant off their poor emotional reactions and learning to respond better practicing self regulation and doing so much more. Lastly, behavioral assignments can include behavioral experimentation, where they simply try to behave in a different way to see what the outcome is like until they find the best or the most effective method in order to behave when they face a challenge. Look, I'd like to mention here that the assignments that you decide to give your client are relative to your clients problem and your own creativity to design an assignment capable off mitigating and even eliminating the problematic reaction. So have some fun with their client designing these tasks. I'll be detailing the stuff as we move ahead because really, we want to go about shaping and changing our client's life with some powerful techniques in the most effective way. And soon you'll be able to mix and match these methods. If you do desire to do that, all right, make them realize that through these assignments they are helping themselves get better and are moving towards their desired goal. When we get into a disputation, you'll have all of these tools at your disposal to conceptualize various possible assignments to give your clients remember they are with you for a limited length of time. I'll say that again. Your clients are going to be with you only for a limited length of time. Perhaps, maybe an R. You can only do so much in that session to move them to change, all right. Therefore, what they do outside the session is going to be everything. You need to get your client to engage with the assignment to give them and really reinforce the pleasure that they will experience with every accomplishment they achieve. All right, use your ingenuity, observe your clients motivational level and the goal they wish to achieve and negotiate fruitful assignments with your plant. I'll see you in the next lecture 21. Creating New Effective Beliefs: what you could consider to be the most important or the most effective outcome you can achieve with Ari CBT is creating a new, effective belief to drive your plans, thoughts, emotions and actions moving forward after your client has learned the methods to dispute their disturbance generating beliefs. Or they have learned the error of their ways with regard to the connection between the irrational beliefs and the consequences that experiencing now you can help your client form a new effective belief, which has a technically sound structure off tackling and even breaking down irrational beliefs, as well as the whole that they have over them and their behavior after you have successfully helped your client dispute their irrational beliefs. According to the guidelines off Ari B. D ah practitioners addition, you can follow these four steps to help form an effective belief. All right, First off, you must negate the must associated with the irrational belief. Second, you must reaffirm their desire in order to help your client experience a change. Third, you must develop a behavioral approach where you get your client to take action to accomplish their desire and then negate the must. Once again finally you must work against the factors that interfere with the accomplishment of this desire. And Diskin include specific emotional factors like frustration, intolerance, catastrophe izing, awful izing or even unnecessary criticism off the self. Others in the world around the plant. Now let's look at an example if the irrational belief is if I am rejected by my lover, that means I am inadequate and unlovable. Here's how you go about engaging with the four step process in order to help your client create a new, effective, rational belief here. The new, effective, rational belief using the four steps could be There is absolutely no reason why a lover must not reject me, even though it is highly preferable that rejections are far less and I find a longer lasting love relationship further. I will therefore work on my negative conclusions that I form when I receive such rejections . While I continue to look for partners and a stable relationship when I feel ready for it, I will work against my awful izing tendency toward an undesirable outcome and refrain from criticizing myself or the failed relationship. Additionally, it is okay to feel sorry about my past, but now I am closing that chapter and moving on so that I can make an effort to find a longer lasting relationship where I am truly happy and fulfilled North s how the new belief is quite comprehensive. I mean, really comprehensive. It contains all the four steps that we just detailed. It can be helpful to detail these four features and ask your client to detail that new, effective belief but incorporating each and every one of them have them write these new beliefs. Don't make sure that your client has created one effective belief that is specific and detailed enough to where they are negating the must, reaffirming their desire to change their including some form of behavioral shift. And they have the tools necessary to work against the emotional factors that could hold them back. Is this clear so far? Now, let's check out another example to make the super important process clear to you. Here's another irrational belief. Life must be exciting all the time. Things can be more exciting only when I'm surrounded by people. What is the new reframed, rational belief that we can introduce here? Life need not be exciting all the time. I know it can be boring and uninteresting a times. However, when life is exciting, I can make the most off it. People are not always going to have the time to be around me when I do feel the need to have fun. I can do that by myself, doing something that I love. Sometimes. If I really feel the need for company, I know I can choose to meet my friends or family. Additionally, I can fight against my own challenges off getting frustrated by enjoying being by myself. I love myself, and I can design a life exciting enough where I can have the best of both worlds. Have you got this process? Don't notice here that again I negated the must reaffirmed their desire to change incorporated a methodology to reduce the pressure off emotional factors that might maintain the irrational belief. And I even used a definitive behavioral approach, giving it our behavioral direction to solidify the power off the change that we're trying to make. By enacting the change, we are reinforcing this new, effective belief. All right, this is a simple four step process that can be repeated and can be used to target breakdown and even restate a problematic, irrational belief. All right, so spend some time applying this on your own self to get a clear idea on how you can do this before you actually start using it in a session with their clients. I'd like you to start things off with an assignment. Okay, So state, one irrational belief associated with each off the following in your own life. I must people must and life must identify one irrational belief associated with each of these major musts. Then I'd like you to restate the new effective belief for each of these musts by following the four step process that have detailed in this lecture, complete this assignment and begin applying this in your Ari CBD session. All right, I'd like to end this with one final thought from Albert Ellis himself when creating a new effective belief. Take the basis off the irrational belief and used that to build the new rational belief, just as we did with the examples applied in your own life. And then in your own sessions, I'll see you in the next lecture. 22. Future Sessions: when you're planned complete succession with you, it always pays to lay out the part that you will be taking with them in future sessions towards achieving their goals. Having 1/2 decent idea about the progression of therapy, how much time each session might be along with how much time is spent working on a specific challenge that your client might be facing it all can be helpful. So during the first session set up the remaining sessions. All right. With that said, Typically, for a case where the emotional disturbance is on a lower scale, that land has greater coping resources as well as fewer irrational beliefs, you could assume that the problem could be dealt with in a few sessions. However, due to the nature off Ari CBT, you can strive toe work through the problems with your client as soon as possible. I do believe that as Ari CBT helpers, it is our duty to not have our clients forever rely on us. The workings of therapy and the principles by which Ari CBT operates promotes that we give our clients the skills necessary to deal with their own personal challenges on there, own terms down the point where they are able to live a life that is problem free. Is this clear? So far, having said that, there are a few things that need to be looked into as you progress through your sessions, you start this process off by checking their homework assignment instead of saying, Have you done your homework? A useful question toe ask might be. How much of your homework have you done? Ask them. How effective was this exercise? How much progress did you see in yourself? What's different? Spend a least 10 minutes discussing the homework and how life is changing outside the therapy session Because, remember, what happens outside the session is as important, if not more important, that what happens during it. I'll say that again. What happens outside the session is as important, if not more important, than what happens during it. The second step is to work on the A B, C D. E model. This is going to be helpful because it's going to allow your client toe establish a self helping, rational philosophy that is going to allow them to establish new, effective beliefs in a much more refined and controlled manner. This involves teaching your clients toe face the adversity off the activating event. It have them build their connection between their irrational beliefs, be on the consequences. C. Have your client practiced their disputation techniques and apply those cognitive behavioral as well as those immortal methods to help deal with their irrational beliefs. Finally, you can go about working with them to help them set up new, effective beliefs that will guide their actions under life towards achieving their goals. When you begin extending intercession 234 and so on, whenever you're working with your clients, it is going to be essential that you keep working on their beliefs, their emotions and their behaviors. Because that is again, what is going to shape their reality during every session. Spend time on rehearsing rational and effective beliefs that are being created. Focus on bringing your client to the point off action or get them to act in ways that is consistent with this new, rational belief. Remember, we want to reinforce change with action. If your client acts in a way that is consistent with the new belief, they will realize that this belief serves them well and they can help them see some results . If your client acts in a way that is consistent with the new belief, they will soon realize that this belief serves them well, and they can help them see some results in their real life. All right, on, if they do see some results, this is going to help them build their momentum and start taking even more action to fulfill their desire off. Seeing bigger and better results associate ID with what they wish to achieve. This is how you want to frame things for their client toe, where they start acting on what they believe, all right, and see how things will actually benefit them. Does this make sense? Make them see how taking action against the new rational belief under the same circumstances off the activating event A can literally change their world. All right. At the end of the day, you are striving towards getting your client to achieve and practice inconsistency the three levels off insight that guide Ari CBT. The third step is to facilitate what's known as the working through process. Here you engage your client and serve to facilitate change. What the step in deals is that we stand by our client, we apply the principles off Ari CBT constantly. We use these strategies to help take our client from pointing where they began initially toe where they're now going and that is Point B. Understand this. We at no point become the change makers for clients. I'll say that again. At no point during these sessions do we become change makers for our plants. We merely act as facilitators, asking strategic questions and stepping in wherever necessary as a helper. It is our job to help empower our client to bring about a change by themselves for themselves and use the power of choice to strengthen their capabilities and skills to handle themselves and their problems better. All right, So keep training your client to raise their level off insight, have them see the error of their ways without telling them that Hey, you did this wrong. Guide them whenever they feel lost in this way. Set yourself up toe. Have your clients succeed without the CBT. Keep working with them and show them how far they have come and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. All right. The most vital thing in Ari CBT, I believe as a helper is to get your client to believe and act as well as act toe believe. This two pronged approach will surely builder clients mental fortitude and overall capability to face anything that they come in contact with after working with your plane over the length off the necessary number of sessions and having gotten them to their goals down the point where you have solved a lot off their problems, if not all of them, it's now time to terminate. The sessions realized that by this stage your client would have been given all the necessary tools to operate independently. Your presence and involvement is more or less not required at this point, however, how do you know as a helper for certain that it is the right time to end the sessions? Well, there's more than one way you can do this. You could, at the very start off therapy or Midway decide how many sessions it's actually going to take in order to help your client or maybe just see our clients progress midway through the therapy sessions and see how they're progressing and then take a call. Additionally, you do want to take into account how your client is feeling and whether they feel they require a few more sessions with you and how confident they are now tackle things on their own. Is this clear look, it might be challenging for a client to let go few. So acknowledge this, and that is why you want to let go off them gently, pre frame them at the very start, if you must, or use any of the strategies that have mentioned so far. Say things like, we will be working together for 10 sessions. This tells your plant. By the time the 10th session does come around, most likely the therapeutic relationship will stop a swell. So in cases like that, this is going to make letting go a lot easier, all right, it's good to give your clients sometimes to let that feeling sinking, because again, this is an important relationship where they have gone through these challenges with you and they have learned the strategy is necessary to help overcome all of these obstacles. So they have build up something off a relationship with you, and it's not going to be easy to let things go, So maybe informed them 2 to 3 sessions ahead of the point where you feel the sessions themselves can now be brought to a close because of the level of progress that they have made. All right, with therapy now officially over, you can inform your client to call. You are set up a time in the near future where you can call and check in on them as well. A see how they're progressing. How are they dealing with things on their own? Are there any other further problems? Is there a recurrence off old habits? Patterns are reactions based on how they are doing. Ah, call can be made to restart therapy or even just reinforced the teachings off what was shared during the sessions. This is why keeping a record of your sessions with a client always helps. It allows you to stay on track and revisit their case if needed. Now this is more or less how pure future sessions are going to progress all the way to termination on the follow up stage. As you grow with Ari CBT, you'll find that facilitating using this process becomes a lot more straightforward and easy to execute. So it boils down to how much experience have build up using all of the stuff. The best thing that I can share with you, if you're just starting out, is to stick to the basics and just stick to these steps. All right. By focusing on the fundamentals even if you sometimes get caught in a fix and you don't really know how to move forward with your client, you can always retrace your steps and find the solution. All right, keep all of this in mind. Practice it and I'll see you in the next lecture. 23. What is Disputation?: understand this. Your clients demands have been built and carried for many years, and the disturbance may have been long lasting. See, majority off their beliefs are going to be rigid and will remain outside their conscious awareness unless someone like you Ah, helper points out to them and says, You know, you may want to check out your beliefs as being a possible cause for all of these, and we all have a part off ourselves are a part of our life that is in somewhere dysfunctional or something that we could improve. So this lack off inside into our own irrational beliefs can actually be helpful, don't you think so? Therefore, when it comes to these long held reject beliefs that are causing our client to face these problems as well as these emotional disturbances that are preventing them from living life to the fullest, it is going to take some time for the disputation off one or more of these beliefs to sink in. I say that again. It is going to take some time for the disputation off your clients beliefs to sink into their mind. For example, if your client held the belief that aliens don't exist slowly, you come to tell them that, Hey, you're mistaken. There's actually some recent proof to indicate that aliens do exist. What are you doing here? You're disputing a client's belief with some rational proof or a realistic view point. This compels them to shift their thinking, change their belief that aliens don't exist. But remember that because your client has held this belief for so long, often many years or maybe their entire life as a helper, you've got toe attack with equal and opposite force. Despite your clients resistance because in your heart are rather in your mind. You know that this belief won't help your client. So there's one thing that you need to know here, and that is when you and your client has successfully found a narrow down on the irrational belief. Now it's up to you to stick to your guns as your dispute. This because your client may actually try to justify that belief by giving you reasons why it's actually true. Look, it's not necessary to fight with your client about this, but spend time to really reinforce the connection between the irrational belief in question and the consequence. Your client is experiencing by holding onto it. Does this make sense now? What is disputation? It is the process usedto work with the clients irrational beliefs and make them realize the scripts that they have made for themselves. You could think off this process as removing unnecessary weeds from your field. You're beginning the process off removing irrational beliefs from within your client's head . So if you had to break disputation into a step by step process, how would it look? First off, you start by reinforcing the connection between the irrational beliefs on the consequences . Second, you make your client realize the causal relationship between the two that is, your beliefs are directly causing the consequences that you're experiencing. Third, you use the forces off pleasure and pain toe help make your client realize that they need to change this belief and themselves. On the whole Number four you reinforce how the shift will move them closer towards their goal. So when you start this process of disputation, you want to ask yourself as a helper, am I making my client realized the scripts that they have made? How can I give them the clarity they need in orderto understand that irrational beliefs better. How far is my client's riel self from becoming their ideal self is what I'm attempting, going to help them move closer towards the goal. Answering powerful questions like this can give you a fresh perspective on how you can go about bringing a shift through disputation. All right, additional to this, we can make use off the three D's of disputation proposed by India's doctor. Far key to simplify how we go about disputing our clients irrational beliefs. This process starts off with detection, looking for and teaching the client how to detect their dysfunctional beliefs. Here in the detection face, you help them recognize the shirts are toes musts and have does. Second, you help them discriminate between these irrational beliefs, the unrealistic demands that they have from the actual rational beliefs or preferences. In this face, you help your client distinguish between a possible irrational belief and a rational belief that could replace it. This could be in the form off a hypothetical example, like an anecdote or even a story where the lead character changed his belief and that ended up changing his reality. You can use your creativity on this one. All right. The finer D is to debate. Use the maser grounds off rationality like a logic or reality dispute, verbally challenge the irrational belief and eventually get her client or drop it for their own reasons. All right, so we literally use our conversation skills to discuss the irrational beliefs without claimed the specific methods that we will use to debate. This will be shared later. But for now, I know that this three step methodology can be enmeshed into your disputation process. All right? No, While disputing are commencing with this process, there are a few things that you want to keep in mind. Number one. Make sure that their client becomes more and more proactive and therapy by giving them homework assignments that they can use to test themselves and get back to you. Second, if your client does display some form of resistance, you can use empathy to help break that number three. Shore them the difference between demands and preferences, and then help them understand the nature of the disturbance that they're experiencing. Lastly, help your client work towards elegant change. Remember, we are looking to help our clients practice better thinking and engage in behaviors that will serve them better. We want to give our clients are disturbance free life and disputation is going to play a major role in delivering that. So if you feel things are not clear, just revised this lecture again. Remember, it's very important to get the logic and reason why we go about disputing an irrational belief before we actually go about playing with our clients minds. So get a clear understanding off how disputation works, why we do it and I'll see you in the next lecture. 24. Types of Disputation: while using all the types of disputation, it's important to remember one thing. The primary technique we use here is called So created. Questioning The key here is toe asked, probing questions that encourage clients to think about that thinking. For example, I can see why you would want a man in your life. But why do you need one? Does this make sense? While we dispute our clients irrational beliefs? Don't forget that we warned them to get themselves to refute their beliefs. We only want to serve as facilitators. You know. It's very easy to jump into a place and tell your client what to think. Listen, as an Ari CBT helper, this is what you want toe. Absolutely refrain from it's up to your client or discover their errors for themselves unless it is absolutely necessary. Do not overtly tell your clients that this belief is wrong. All right, You want them to have that ah ha moment where they have a powerful epiphany that can initiate change far more powerful than anything you can push them to believe. Does this make sense? So just use the different types of disputation and keep questioning your client until they see the light? No, there are three primary types off disputation, and we'll be discussing them first. But remember that regardless of the other types of disputation and the kind of questions that you ask your client, the outcome of this exercise is all the same, all right. And that is to get your client to see the error off, believing what they believe, especially something that is grounded in irrationality and that is getting them to experience the current consequences that they are currently experiencing on and is keeping them really from living or disturbance free life. So now let's look at what's called a reality or an empirical dispute. In this, the helper asks the client whether what they believe will actually happen. This disputation method assesses the valid ity off the premise. For example, you're tackling the irrational belief. I am unlovable, and I will never find a man to share my life with. You can question your client like this. I mean, I can see why you would want a man in your life. But why do you need one? Do you actually believe that your life will be without love without the presence off a man in your life. Additionally, you could follow up with this. What makes you believe that this will happen? Or what do you have going on around you that makes you believe this? Like, what are you seeing and hearing that's making you hold onto an idea like this. Did you get all of this? This is how you go about using the reality or the empirical dispute. So you get their client to see, hear, feel, and actually experience what is going on in the real world and then get them to dispute the belief that is in their mind. Next, we move on to the logic and evidence based dispute here. The helper asks the client whether there is any evidence for the conclusion that they have formulated. We assess the value pretty of the conclusion that is it's going to follow the only if and only then principle. A simple example. Often irrational belief here could be only if I please everyone. Only then they will be nice to me. So you could ask your client under the circumstances. What proof do you have that this is true? Do you have any evidence for this? All we do here is get our clients to examine the grounds for evaluating their belief with some form off logic, and more often than not, that is going to be no logic. However, if there is any evidence or logic that they present, if it really is impeding or restricting them, all you need to do is keep questioning them. Keep using a logic based dispute alright or location. Your client will not really agree or see eye to eye with logic. Remember, Ah, lot of irrational beliefs will be illogical and very real for your client, and that's why we have the other disputation techniques to help assist us with that. The third technique we can use here is called a pragmatism or functional dispute. Here, the helper asks the client whether this belief is going to help them reach their goals and allow them to be happy. We end up assessing whether the belief is taking one to their goal, and it's working for them in some way. In this, we get our client to really think about the functional, use off their belief so you could ask them by holy going to this belief. What purpose is it serving you. You could even add something like this. I mean, what's this belief really going to do for you? After all, Hasn't thinking this way gotten you? The results that you've gotten so far may be considered thinking twice about how this belief is working for you or not. Basically, have your plant evaluating their head, the purpose or function for the irrational belief. Typically, there isn't going to be any riel function. All right again, your client might actually attempt to justify but reiterate your dispute by questioning how this belief has actually been holding them back all this time. So that was the pragmatic or functional dispute. Now let's look at the philosophical dispute here. The helper asks the client whether this belief will help them achieve happiness in general or arrive at a relatively peaceful state of mind. This questions the irrational belief by asking if the client would be happy at all times in general if they were to stick to the current rigid belief system that they have. Go ahead and directly ask your claimed under the circumstances. I need to know whether this belief will actually help you to achieve happiness. I mean, if you left things the way they are now, would you truly be able to live with yourself without any guilt? Additionally, you could even get philosophical. Speak your clients language, have them question their own irrational philosophy until they see things differently. All right, The next dispute is called a friend dispute. Here, the helper asks the client if they would passed a similar judgement based on what they are doing for themselves on a friend. This helps bring out contradictions and rigid beliefs that are held about one self versus a flexible belief about someone else. Now, I don't like how my boss acts with me purposely making me work when I need to head home. However I can stand it because that's how all bosses are. And I should respect my boss here. This could be an irrational belief that your client comes with you can present a question like this to them. Suppose a close friend of yours found themselves in the same situation as you. Would you believe that it would be OK to allow them to think this way about their boss? I mean, is it okay for them to undergo an experience similar to what you are going through, and that's how it's done. Remember, while using this form of disputation, you want to give your client 1/3 person perspective off their own irrationality. All right, The next dispute is called a terrorist dispute. Here, the helper inquires whether the client would be able to stand and act in line with their irrational belief while a gun were pointed to their head. The terrorist dispute is one that you can use as a last resort when the client is not really seeing things for what they are, especially when the belief is so rigid, sore, deeply rooted and, most importantly, sore. Strongly held despite having clear consequences that are detrimental to the client and their progress. Use it like this. Listen, it seems to me that you really think that breaking the law and going back to prison is the only option for you. But let me ask you this. If a gun were put your head right now and you were given no option but to think and act differently, would you do it? How would you handle things? No answer carefully, because your life is on the line and a Gunness pointed to your head. Put your client on the sport As you use this disputation technique again, you want to save this disputation technique for the most rigid and the most performed Lee detrimental, irrational beliefs that your client has. Does this make sense? The next dispute is called a didactic dispute here. Instead of asking the client a question, the help Ercan directly tell the client why his or her belief is irrational. Now I can understand your hunger to win, but that doesn't mean that you're a failure. When you don't meet these rigid standards off warning to win every time. All right, our another way of putting this across in a different situation under a different circumstance. Could we? I believe you're headed on the right track towards quitting smoking. However, I do think that you need not be so hard on yourself if you slip up. Change takes time and you're doing pretty well for yourself. This is how you put forth the didactic dispute. Remember that we are using this disputation method as much as we need to use it sparingly because we don't want to push our client to think what we want them to think. Instead, blend this with the other disputation techniques for the best possible results. All right, the storytelling dispute is another powerful dispute that you can present your client. Here, the helper tells a story, provide some form off a metaphor, or even an analogy that highlights the irrational nature off their clients. Beliefs. As the name suggests, you can tell your client. A statement described an incident are a conversation that you had with someone even share a story to make her plant think twice about that irrationality. It could be as simple as connecting the dots. Do you see the model off the story off thinking the same way over and over again? Do you see how, when you focus on how things can go wrong, they usually do end up going wrong? This is the final dispute that we'll be discussing here, but for the most part you can see that once you get a hold of thes, you can mix and match them as you please and really bring them together based on the context off your sessions. All right, next, we'll be getting into the specific techniques and exercises to help executive the disputation process. I'll see you in the next lecture 25. The 3 Disputation Techniques: there are three main ways to get your client to work with you on by themselves. To combat an irrational belief. These techniques incorporate different exercises that the client works on towards stopping and even breaking up and ultimately setting themselves up to establish a new effect of belief. The three main disputation techniques cover three off the most important aspect that maintain the irrational way of thinking that their client may present with the first of these is called an emotive disputation method. Here we tackle the specific emotions that influence the maintenance off the irrational belief. Second, we look at cognitive disputation. Here we unravel specific, problematic tarts that influence the maintenance off the irrational belief as well as any self doc that is damaging our client. Lastly, we look at behavioral disputation. One of the best ways to check out and modify a belief is going to be to take action. Clients can be encouraged, for instance, to check out the evidence for their fears and act in ways to disprove them. In the next couple of lectures will be looking into the specific methods off each one of these techniques, and soon you'll refine your capacity to dispute these irrational. Additionally, you will be able to structure the whole Ari CBT process to meet the needs of your client schools, where they may not be able to break the belief in one goal, but by thinking feeling on behaving differently. They can change their beliefs more on this. As we move ahead, I'll see you in the next lecture. 26. Technique 1: Emotive Disputation: Now that you've been well acquainted with the basics off disputation, we can start to look at the specific techniques and how you gonna play them in a session? We're going to look at emotive disputation first. The first technique that we can apply here is time projection. This is a visual imagery technique, and it is designed to show that one's life as well as the world in general, continue even after a feared or unwanted event has come and gone. You start this process off by asking that line to visualize the unwanted event occurring. Then you ask them to imagine going forward in time in their mind one week from now. Then one month, then six months, then one year, two years and so on and so forth. During each of these points of time, you ask them to consider how they may be feeling. They will just be able to see that life will continue to go on, even though they may need to make some adjustments here in there. It's important to acknowledge here that rational coping statements are not given while using this time projection technique. Instead, we get our client to play all out emotionally. If they do experience some emotional pain, we allow them to go through that pain. Since this disputation techniques has your client playing things out in their mind in the present moment, it can allow your client to realize that things are not as awful is they might actually think, even if it is unpleasant, it's not the end. They do have a choice to persevere and ultimately imagine themselves succeed in the future . The second technique that we can examine here under emotional disputation is called a rational, emotive imagery. Here you can let your client think of the unpleasant situation as well as described things as they have their eyes closed. Have them really feel the emotion that he or she is feeling as they're described. The story let them deep dive into their problematic emotional experience and share all of that information with you. This is synonymous with the self talk identification technique that we discussed earlier here. You want to teach the plan to repeat the rational coping statements toe themselves, whether eyes closed as they feel relaxed when the eyes are opened. Eventually you can ask your client how they feel. Do they still feel anxious or fearful. If they do, just repeat this imagery in their mind again and again. As they repeat, these rational coping statements toe themselves every day in order to adapt a healthy new philosophy. Now here's the thing. When your client has taken to this relaxed state but regulating their breathing, they're picturing the worst happening. It's not going to be an easy step for them to take. Additionally, when you teach them and they have to repeat some rational coping statements, they're not going to be able to catch testifies and deep dive into an emotion like fear of sadness. So these are just a couple of things that you need to remember as you go about applying this all right. An example I would like to talk about here when I had to apply this in my own life was when I had to perform a fire walk. This is one breakthrough activity that I don't really recommend for everyone, but it is super powerful. When I had to do this before the actual activity, I had to repeat certain rational coping statements in my mind like clear blue skies, white fluffy clouds. I scored fire clear blue skies, white fluffy clouds, ice cold fire by playing these statements in my mind over and over again prior to the actual activity. And when I was actually walking on the fire, I eventually trained my mind and body to relax, and then I was able to pull from the activity with relative ease. So when you're doing this with a client, you want to help them relax their mind and body and train themselves to mentally go through the unpleasant emotional experience. Initially, they will push themselves away from this emotional experience, but ultimately they will move away from that irrational belief because they are able to realize that they can overcome. Remember that the perceived negative outcome emotion is no longer going to be in their experience if they're blocking their mind with a more powerful, rational thought process. And what you can't feel your turn truly experience. Do you? The next technique that we're going to examine its called a reverse rule play? This is a useful and effective technique that's also known as the Devil's Advocate, and it's designed to get that land toe argue against their own dysfunctional belief. Remember, as with all techniques. Be sure to explain it to the client before you actually use it. There are two ways off using this technique. First, it involves switching rules with the client, where the client becomes the helper and the helper becomes the clan. As the helper, you rule play adopting the clients belief and vigorously argue for it while the client at the same time tries to convince you that the belief is dysfunctional. It's especially useful when the Clarence sees that the belief is irrational but needs help to consolidate that understanding. This also helps the client practice disputation off their own self talk sort, super powerful. Second, that lion plays the third person and the helper place that land. This enables that lying to see how he or she is likely to respond and behave when they assumed the role of 1/3 party entering the situation while participating in a reverse role play, the client gets an insight into their own behaviors, and cognition is in this fashion as the helper. Here, you can use this opportunity to deep dive in, tow their emotional experience and really add an element of humor and be a little over the top, sometimes sure that land how they are impacting themselves because of their own irrational beliefs. Eventually, they will automatically end up disputing their own irrational beliefs by seeing them from a totally different perspective. Alright, the next technique that we're going to examine is called the Empty Chair Technique. Here you're going to encourage the plane to sit opposite an empty chair and talk to it. Have them imagine someone who disturbs them as they are seated in the chair opposite them, because it's going to allow your plant here to rent out their feelings about someone or something that is distressing them. The helper, in the meantime, will be observing the proceedings and making notes. This is another reliable, self taught gathering technique. Also, this disputation works great for musts, ensures that are associated with people in their life. Let's see, her plan has an overbearing mother in law that they need to tolerate and believe they have toe behave a certain way with By engaging in this activity, they push themselves to express their emotions that they have withheld for a very long time . The premise is that they will eventually realize that they have a choice in how they express themselves and what they believe about the situations as well as the person they're communicating with. The next technique is called a to chair technique. In this, the client is encouraged to play both roles here, off oneself and the other person involved in the client's disturbance. The helper observes this in the background and takes notes whenever required again. This enables them to see the dynamics from the client's perspective and is another great cell talk gathering tools. What else do we have? We have something called paradoxical intention and behavior. When a client wishes to change your dysfunctional tendency, encourage them to deliberately behave in a way contradictory to the tendency. Emphasize the importance off, not waiting until they feel like doing it, practicing the new behavior on a regular basis, even if it does not initially spontaneous. Gradually they will internalize the new habit. Now let's look at an example here. The fear of sleeplessness will result in more sleeplessness due to its anticipated outcome . Therefore, instead off wishing toe fall asleep, ask your client to wish the opposite to happen and be okay with that here. It could be a wish toe, not fall asleep, Lexei or client, just shift their focus to relaxing in this way. By reinforcing the start emotion and behavioral pattern. The outcome will eventually change from sleeplessness to sleep. Now that the focus has shifted, it has become a normal task, as has any other, and it does not produce the anxiety that it once created. Thus, the fear here is replaced by a paradoxical wish, the exact opposite off what the client initially anticipates happening here. We help the client to understand that once the focus has shifted from the feared outcome, the anticipate re anxiety about what is going to happen eventually decreases, and they end up changing themselves. Also, stepping out of character is one more common type of paradoxical behaviour we can use here . For example, Ah, perfectionist person could deliberately do some things toe really move away from that perfect standard. Or they could strive to be unselfish if they are seeing themselves a selfish people. So eventually a client is going to end up disputing their only rational belief about something that they can't do or achieve in this fashion. The next thickening that we're going to look at is called self disclosure as the helper. This relates to exposing some part of your past to your client, which can help educate them about how you overcame some challenges that they know may be facing. This one is super powerful. It also serves in helping the client see how you may empathize with them and understand how they feel all right. Additionally, it can also help your plane realize that they have a choice under their challenging circumstances. I believe if you can use this powerful technique and make your client feel that there is hope and that there is a resolution available by revealing something that you did from your own personal experience that can change their entire outlook and lead them toe moving towards a life where they are not limited by their own beliefs any longer. Next, we're going to examine the blow up technique. This is a variation of the worst case imagery, coupled with the use of humor to provide a vivid and memorable experience for your plant. It involves asking your client to just imagine whatever it is they fear happening, then you blow it out of proportion until they cannot help but be amused by it. When they end up laughing at their fears, they will be able to get a lot stronger control over what they're experiencing. So the problematic situation will no longer seem like a problem once they start laughing at their own challenges again. The use of this technique requires sensitivity, empathy and appropriate timing. With these emotive techniques, you can begin tapping into the problematic and limiting emotions that correlate with your clients problematic and limiting beliefs, so use them to great effect. Work on them in your sessions, start with a couple of them, and as you become more and more comfortable and familiar with them, you can start to expand your horizons. All right, I'll see you in the next lecture. 27. Technique 2: Cognitive Disputation: the next set off disputation techniques that we're going to look at our cognitive disputation techniques under this. The first thing that we're going to look at is teaching our client the A B C's Off RD CBT. This involves helping disturbed clients separate from the notion that their present disturbance is because of their traumatic events that they experienced in their childhood all their bust. You get your plans to understand why they're holding on to their irrational beliefs in the present day due toa absolute demanding nous. Why they have these shorts musts our toes and have toes. Then you help them reach new levels off insight, as suggested in Ari CBT, And this is going to assist your client break away from the notion that they are victims toe their situations. Moreover, make them realize that they can change for the better by dropping the rigid demands about events that disturbed them in the present day. Next, we're going to look at detecting irrational beliefs. This process is similar to what we discussed with regard to detecting, discriminating and ultimately debating irrational beliefs, but now we're going to look at it in greater detail. This specific step involves making a north off the clients absolute, demanding nous at first, Within the conversation with your client, these will seem like hidden cords. If at any instance, you get stuck and you're unable toe, unlock any of these hidden beliefs or you have a hunch and you're not sure if this belief is, in fact the irrational one, you can ask your client for a confirmation off. Your supposition. Remember when and out in a session. Just ask your claim. Some of these irrational beliefs can take the form of musts Shourd's and have those associated with the self, others on the world all right, for example. I must speak well to people I find attractive. People must be interesting and clever when I don't speak well and impress other people as assured, I am stupid and an inadequate person again. This is all stuff that we have covered so far. Once you have detected, the irrational beliefs you can start looking are discriminating them from rational ones. This specifically involves showing the client there difference between irrational beliefs that is unrealistic demands they may have about people themselves or the world, and comparing them to the rational beliefs or preferences that they have here. You allow your plan to specifically look at their own self talk and the dialogues that they're having with you. Now the client may hold on toe attempt or even justify and prove you in some way how their own preferential beliefs can help them again. They may actually work really hard to prove to themselves that what they think in their mind is actually true. Part of the confirmation bias agenda that I spoke about, we're back. Also, clients that are extremely demanding are going to be most susceptible to hold on to their unrealistic demands. In this disputation step, you show them the difference between an irrational belief on a rational belief about the very same thing. Stress on the functionality off the belief. Usually a rational belief is going to help serve that land while an irrational belief will impede them. For example, I don't like being anxious and showing it to others, but perhaps I can get over it. However, a rational belief under the same circumstances could be if people do reject me for showing them how anxious I am, that will be most unfortunate. But I can still standard. It's important to understand here the distinction between what we define as an irrational belief and what we consider a better rational belief. For example, I may not believe in God, but my client might, and it's important to acknowledge that I see in my eyes believing in God might be the most irrational belief that my client could possibly have. But if God gives them strength in times of need, that is very much a helly realization. So just give them the old functionality test. Ask them the purpose served by a belief to ensure that you are not treading on thin ice and you are able to make informed distinctions. All right, Does this make sense? So far, now, you have detected the irrational beliefs you've begun discriminating them from the rational ones. Now it's time to actually debate some of these irrational beliefs that their client continues to hold on to. This involves using several logical and empirical questions to challenge these irrational beliefs. So during this period is when you actually work to move your plan away from their dysfunctional way of thinking. This refutation style questioning provokes. Approve it thought in your planes, head and finally, they will actually try to do it. So look out for that. But provided your question intelligently. Soon you'll find that they have absolutely no justification available for the irrational beliefs. All right, why must you always speak well to people that you find attractive? Where is it written that you have to be clever and interesting all the time? Do you really have to speak easily and spontaneously without too much effort? Where is the evidence that you have for this conclusion? You can do this yourself with your client in a session, or you could have them present such prove it style questions to themselves as a homework assignment. Okay, Is this clear thus far? Now we're going to look at using coping self statements or rational coping statements that are really going to be powerful, and it's gonna allow your client to really manifest what they warned with regard to changing themselves. This specific ing involves helping your client participating in repeating well worded statements toe themselves that way, possibly shift their limiting idea about their own demanding this. It works on the presumption that these coping statements will eventually be internalised. For example, I can speak up to others, even if I feel uncomfortable doing so. No one dies of social anxiety. I can manage this, and I am a powerful speaker in the making. So in this way, if your client is struggling with, say, speaking toe, a large group of people they can continually repeat these statements toe themselves in the form of some form of affirmations and as the keep repeating the stuff slowly, they will start to make it a part of their subconscious thought process. And it becomes automatic in that they behave in ways that is going to help them in some way . All right, the next technique that we're going to look at is called referencing, not referencing, but referendum. This is a technique that explores the advantages and disadvantages off the current thoughts about certain behaviors that your client may have in this Ah client can be helped to write down several advantages off facing the discomfort off, challenging one's own frustration tolerance levels. Typically, this is achieved by being forced toe act or being a situation that can bring them discomfort by following through with this instead, off referencing to oneself only the disadvantages of being in an uncomfortable situation that is feeling awkwardness and embarrassment. They end up listing down or referencing toe oneself, always looking at the benefits and acting moving forward, and they're going to constantly remind themselves off this. Therefore, we get our client to pass judgements on the advantages and disadvantages of safe, one specific, irrational belief. Let's say in this case the belief is about public speaking now. The advantages they list it could be. I would get to practice my speaking skills and therefore become more fluent. I would be able to see how other people will receive my message and so on. All right, in this way, just get them to focus on the advantages. Ultimately, if the irrational belief is seen as negatively impactful, as it actually isn't the real world, the advantages will always and I mean always outnumber their disadvantages. And you can get your client to see this if they actually list the stuff down through referencing after we've done this, we can also look at how we can use psycho education as a part of the therapeutic process. This is going to involve having your client read books, watch videos and even listen to audio tapes as well as any other moored that will allow them to continue their growth process even when they're outside the therapy session. This is done by giving relevant assignments or sharing relevant material that is specific to their problem. All right, The premise here is that the client educates themselves further and further about a specific problem. Eventually, they will begin to mentally dispute their own irrational beliefs. This process of education will automatically seem like a step forward towards letting go off their old ways. Is this clear? So far, now that we've gotten some off the easier techniques out of the way, we can start to think about using strategic humor. Now, by exaggerating and helping clients see that they take themselves way too seriously. They may end up naturally disputing that irrational beliefs by seeing the humor that is actually used to refute it. For example, I must make everyone happy in my household. Now, as the helper, you could jump in and say something like this. Wow, you seem to enjoy making everyone really happy while you're at it. Why don't you make your made happy and then your milkman? I'm sure your friends and extended family could use some loving, too, don't you think? So? I think you can do something really special for them, and there's no need to stop there. There's a lot off unhappiness and society to so think about how you can do something even for them. Sounds like a good plan for someone who loves making other people happy. Don't you make sure that adequate report has been established before you use this? It can be an effective tool in the disputation process to show corn predictions and ineffective thinking. This in some way is a strategic strategy and really requires you toe have great timing and delivery combined. This with needs often Ari CBD session. And really, you'll find yourself soon in a really powerful place if you can incorporate this into your helper repertoire, all right? No, we can examine rational analysis similar to the A B C's off Ari CBD. The helper analyzes specific episodes to teach the client how to uncover and dispute their irrational beliefs. This is usually done in session at first, and then, as the client gets the idea off what this actually entails, it can be carried out as homework. The difference is that the client has the opportunity to deep dive into their always at their own time in order to hold their skills off recognition and coping. Next, we're going to examine the double standard dispute if the client is holding onto assured or is engaging and self downing behavior. Asked whether they would globally rate another person like a best friend or you the helper for doing the exact same thing, or recommend that that person hold onto the same core demanding belief that this person the client is holding on to when they say no, help them see that they are holding on to a double standard here. This is going to be especially useful with resistant beliefs, which the client finds hard to give up. And, yes, there is some similarity here to the friend dispute. It doesn't always have to be a close friend. Remember that you can have them assume it's a family member or anyone who is close to them toe. Next, we can examine the catastrophic ization skill. This is a useful technique to get awful lazing into perspective on a white board or sheet of paper, draw a line down on one side, put 100% at the top and 0% of the bottom, and at 10% intervals in between. Asked the client to rate whatever it is they are catastrophe izing about and insert that item into the chart in the appropriate place. Then fill in other levels with items that the client things apply to those levels. You might say, for example, here put 0%. When you're having acquired cup of beard home, however, it might raise up to 20% when you hear that you have two more. The lawn. When the rugby is on television, for example, seven. Be person for feeling burgers 90% when you're diagnosed with cancer, 100% for being burned the life. So you get them to examine these various levels of frustration that they may be facing within their own mind, and they actually put it on paper. Finally, have the plant progressively alter their position off the feared item on the skill until it is in perspective and in relation to the other items. Now you want them to move away from this extreme emotional intensity and have them experience what the emotion actually is telling them you get them to reduce the perceived distress over a period of time, using various image Aries or even questioning if the belief is I should be a great mother. Say something like this. Now I understand this is very distressing to you, but what makes you believe that it is so distressing? What's the proof to say that you are not a great mother times? What if, despite all your efforts, your child doesn't think that you're a good mother? What needs to happen to bring the impact of this lure on the catastrophe skill. So this method is optional. If you're looking to grade your clients, distress, and this can be brought into the therapeutic process accordingly. All right. Next we can look at reframing. This is another strategy for getting bad events into perspective, and it involves reevaluating bad events as disappointing concerning or just uncomfortable rather than awful or unbearable. Ah, variation of re framing is to help the client see that even negative events almost always have a positive side to them. Listing all the positives that a client can think off is going to be super powerful. Remember that this needs scare so that you're not coming across as suggesting that a bad experience is really a good one. So communicate with empathy. Alright, that is super important. So there you have it. Those were all of the cognitive disputation techniques. Again, I know it's quite a lot, which is why you want to pick and choose a couple of them and then take your disputation process forward, slowly integrating each and every one of thes into your own repertoire. Work on these techniques, and I'll see you in the next lecture. 28. Technique 3: Behavioral Disputation: When we look at behavioral disputation, we can assume that this is the most powerful disputation method of them all. Because if you can get her plan to see results through action, it can instantly block out any negative, limiting or even irrational beliefs. But often getting your clients. The act can be the biggest of challenges because their beliefs are preventing them from doing so. Therefore, I suggest you go about executing these effectively with their plans to help them achieve the best and fastest results associated with their goals. The first technique here is risk taking risk taking works best for anxious and fearful outcomes where the client is afraid of rejections. Here, you're going to end up encouraging them to take risks and to act out their fearful situations in order to see the outcome. Behavioral e. Here it's going to be effective toe. Have your client play out the water scenarios that may have been going on in their mind behind the scenes that has been keeping them from completing a certain task. Additionally, this is going to help teacher plant to take calculated risks all right next week and look at cost benefit analysis here for clients focusing on charter and Pleasure or those who are unable to make decisions. This cost benefit analysis technique and be used to help them way out both the short term and long term benefits. Off taking action simultaneously, the client can make a list off the costs in the short term versus the long term costs for effective decision making. This technique is going to be greater disputing short term hedonism or in decision by coming to the realization and reinforcing in their mind that the benefits outweigh the costs. The client will end up eventually taking action and refuting their irrational belief about why they could not do it before. This can be paired with dealing gratification that is commonly used to combat low frustration tolerance by deliberately dealing, smoking, eating, sweets, using alcohol, sexual activity and so much more. The premise of this is that by dealing pleasure now, they will be able to experience a larger reward later. A simple example of this could be not smoking now leads to living a longer life later. Another effective technique here that comes under the behavioral spectrum of disputation is home. Look, this is an effective behavioral change technique because it can be given discreetly by the helper. One effective method to use it can be to align the homework with the goals off the next session. The skin include activities like reading self help books and even practicing exercises that are going to be experiential. Ari CBD sessions are really training sessions for the outside world. I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Ari CBD sessions are really training sessions for the outside world. We are preparing our clients to behave in an effective way in the outside world and have them take action to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. Does this make sense? Remember, your homework assignments are relative to the context of what your client is going through and your own creativity off applying all that you have learned so far. All right. Moving on the systematic desensitization. Hear that Landis First order Relax ation exercise that incorporates both a physical and mental imagery. After practicing this, the client has made the list five or 10 off the most provoking situations and starts acting them out in his or her mind. They play it out, starting from the least fearful toe the most fearful situation in the list. Prepare the client for the experience by taking them through, Ah, brief, hypnotic exercise. Get them to close the race, slow their breathing and enter a powerful, relaxed state of mind. Then allow them to imagine the feared situation on the most disturbing emotion in line with what they want to experience at that given point of time while they are in this relaxed state, all right. At the same time, you're going to be giving them various scoping instructions. Now here's how this may actually play out in a session. Inhale through your nose, and as you eggs ill slowly started. Let go off the tension that you're feeling. Notice that when you inhale, your stomach will slowly expand and you'll start to Endor, a more relaxed state of mind. Every time you take a deep breath in, just hold your breath for three seconds and then eggs ill through your mouth. Take a deep breath in, hold it for three seconds and then exit through your mouth. Just keep repeating this process with your plant, all right, so once they enter the state, they can be advised to do the same deep breathing exercise for at least five minutes. When someone is exposed to a fearful situation, he might not realize that he is doing chest breathing, and this is going to result in tightening off muscles, anxiety, dry throat and so many other various symptoms. So by practicing deep breathing regularly, it's going to be easier for an individual to become more relaxed. And again, this is going to be a matter off practice. Another common relaxation exercise is progressive muscle relaxation. In this exercise, that land is Astra tight in his or her muscles and then loosen them gradually. This exercise can induce deep muscle relaxation in the plant. All right, let's say the client is afraid of holding onto snakes, and we broke it down to a five step process. Now, in a session, this can be used in its own way. You can break it down to five steps. 10 steps or even 15 steps based on where your clients turns with regard to their problem now is the client is specifically facing a challenge with regard to holding snakes. Here's how a five step process may play out. You can ask them to think about holding a snake second, believe that holding a snake feels nice. Next, you can ask them to hold a robust nick after that, see someone else hold the snake to wear. Eventually, they're going to end up holding the snake when they reached the fifth and final step. Now, while in a meditative state, we can take our client mentally through these steps so that they believe that they are capable off acting it out in the real world. All right, Once you've used systematic desensitization a bit, you can think about using exposure in your sessions. Possibly the most common behavioral strategy that is used in Ari CBT involves your clients entering the feared situations themselves are the most problematic situations that they normally wish to avoid. Such exposure is deliberate, planned and carried out, using various cognitive and coping skills. The purpose here is to test the validity off their fears that rejection could not be served in the past, but now they can actually do it. We also looked at be awful. Is the situation by having them see that the catastrophe does not really exist? It's just in their head. At the same time, we get them to develop their confidence in their own abilities to cope, alright and then finally we increase their tolerance for discomfort by progressively discovering that it is actually a bearable, that they have the capacity to face this challenge in a very effective way. Now this technique can be used in V evil. What this means is that the client does not just imagine acting it out, but instead also exposes themselves to the task in reality and that they are going to put the stuff into practice. Rational coping statements can also be used while engaging in this activity. The next technique. We're going to look at a shame. Attacking this type of exposure involves confronting the fear of shame by deliberately acting in ways that the client anticipates may attract disapproval. Well, at the same time, we're going to be using cognitive and emotive techniques to feel only concerned or disappointed. Take the most embarrassing, shameful and anxiety provoking situation that the client may be facing and ask them to carry it out in action in the real world and see what really happens. This enables your client. I understand that the situation is not as gravely negative and as M backed ful as they perceived in their mind, and it actually is fairly manageable. For example, you could suggest that the client switched their shoes to the wrong feet and then walk around the office building with you for 10 minutes. And at the same time, you can end up disputing the shame inducing thinking. So in this way, some weird activities can be given to where they are confronting the fear of shame on really moving past, that feeling off embarrassment. All right, use your creativity on this and move ahead. Also, we have Rule play here. That land is going to prepare a short script for role play, and you can assist your client with regard to this. The script is enacted during the session by you, the helper on the client, and this is going to help the client toe better equipped themselves in dealing with the feared situation outside because they have been practicing certain mental dialogues and they've been seeing certain things to themselves in session, and this is going to allow them to cope in a unique and powerful way. These are only a handful of the techniques that you can use to bring about powerful behavioral change through irrational belief. Disputation. At the end of the day, actions are the only way to prove your client what they're capable off. I'll say that again, actions are the only way to prove your client what they're truly capable off, so striving to help them achieve. This is something that they may hate you for a while. It's actually happening in the real moment in the real world, but eventually they're gonna love you for it when they managed to break through. Now, with all the disputation techniques that I've shared with you, you now have an arsenal at your disposal. Work on them and get really good with this stuff as you move ahead with your own disputation process in your sessions. Because if you can get your client to let go off their old dysfunctional ways of thinking, get them to generate new, effective beliefs that can serve them. Life will eventually become a lot easier for them. With that side, revised this entire section on disputation as many times as you need to, and I'll see you in the next lecture 29. Applications of REBT: Ari Beauty and Ari See beauty has been successfully used to help people with a range of clinical and non clinical problems, and this has been done using a variety of different modalities. The most common off these is with individual clients. However, you can use this in a group session as well. It's really dependent on your desire and how you want to apply all of this stuff. Now there are two application areas based on which we can divide our Yusof Ari BT they are clinical applications and non clinical applications. Let's look at clinical applications first. If you're in the clinical mental health space, this stuff that you've learned in this program is going to be super powerful. So if you're facing challenges with depression, you have clients who are facing eating disorders, addictions, impulse control or CD anxiety, anger management, personality disorders, sexual abuse, any of these you can start to use our E, B, T and R E CBT to help them out. Additionally, you can even apply the stuff, the pain management, stress management and even child order dollars and behavioral disorders as well as relationship and family problems. So this is just a taste off what you can actually apply in the real world. If you're working in a clinical space at the same time, you don't have to restrict yourself because I believe that you can use Ari Beauty as long as there is a conversation to be hard with someone. So even the non clinical applications here are going to be pretty good. Ari BT Theory contains detailed principles on things like self interest, self acceptance and even risk taking. And this can be used to help people develop an act on a more functional philosophy off life . So if you're looking at personal growth and personality development on all of this stuff, you can really start to think about how you can apply this.
