1. Fundamental concepts: Welcome to this quick start toe one note class. The purpose of this class is not to go over every little item in one note, but to focus on the key things you need to know to get you up and running as quickly as possible without any fluff. So with that in mind, let's get started with some key terms. Now, the first term that you need to know is notebook and what one note means when it talks about a notebook. So a notebook is, ah, file that contains sections and pages. So think of it. Kind of like a word document. Your notebook can be stored either on your local hard drive for offline access or a cloud storage service like one drive Google drive, Dropbox and so on for online access Very much in the same way in exactly the same way, actually has a word document. So if you think of a word document, you open up that file and then you have whatever you've written in the word document there Well, in a notebook which is actually the file inside when you open that you're going tohave sections, so sections are essentially like a folder that live inside of your notebook and they contain pages. And then the pages are that blank piece of virtual paper where you can take your notes and and put whatever you want down there. So to see this a little bit visually, you're going tohave your notebooks. That's the file. You open up the notebook, and then that's going to have sections. And inside the sections are pages. So let's say, for example, let's say I have a ah notebook in my documents folder, and that notebook is called my notebook 0.0, any or 0.1 that is the extension, Just like for a word document. The extension is dot docu dot doc or dot docs X or Ah, pdf. Right, That's the extension. That's the file for the notebook, the extension for the notebook. And then inside that notebook, I'm goingto have a section. So that section might be meetings, right? So you can see kind of how this works and how it goes from one to the other. And then inside that section right is going to go down to the actual page. That could be something like my staff meeting notes or something like that. And then there's another key term that is helpful that will actually look at a little bit later on in this class. That's the section groups, So section groups are essentially exactly what they sound like. They're, ah, group of sections together, so you have, ah, notebook, and then you could have a section and then the pages under there. But you can actually group together a bunch of different sections, and we'll look at that a little bit later on in this class. So here's another example of how it all works together. So let's say I'm storing everything on one drive and I have my notebook in there, and then my notebook. I'm going to have all these different sections and then under each of those sections, I'm going toe have the different pages that are going to contain my notes, right? So those are actually pages there that contained the notes. And then that might be for meetings. And then maybe for Web clippings under that section, I'm going toe have ah bunch of different pages there. All right, so now that we know some of these key terms and kind of how one note organizes everything, let's jump into one note in our next video, and we'll take a look at this in action
2. Setting up OneNote for the first time: In our last video, we learned some key terms that we need to know about how one note organizes everything in this video. We're going to set up one note for the first time and see some of those features in action . All right, so the first thing we need to do is to actually open or create a notebook just like inward . Before we can actually start typing something, we need to actually create a new document or open an existing one. The very same. This is very, very similar. So there's a couple places we can go to open up or create a new notebook. We can either come to over here where it says notebooks. Click on that goto, add a notebook, open an existing one if we already have one. Or as we can see, one note is telling us right here we can just click on this here, and basically that's going to take us over to file and tell us to open a new one and all leads to the same place. Now where we create this notebook is very important, because if we want it to be sync to the cloud, so say we want to use it at work. We want to use it at home. We want to use it wherever we have the various computers that we have one note set up on. We can do that by sinking it to the cloud and creating it in there. And one note by default will try to get you to use one drive because they're both Microsoft products. Works really, really well, Alternatively, what we can do is actually save it locally if you want to do that, or we can add in a new place. If we wanted to do that, if we need to add in one drive or if we have Google, drive Dropbox, whatever we can actually just browse to wherever that folder, it's sinking on our local hard drive and then store that there for the purpose of this video. I'm gonna go through one drive and let's just create it in here. Someone to create this Quick start to one note is my notebook. Create this and there we go. If we wanted to create it on a different folder in one drive, we could just click this little link right here. Give one note a moment to connect and create that. And no, I do not want to share it with anybody right now. And there we go. So we have our our first notebook that we have set up now inside here we can see the things that we were talking about in our previous video. We have our section here. All right, we can add new sections if we wanted to just click this little plus and it's going to create and create a new section and then under each of these sections are our pages. So the pages over here on the right hand side, we can add in as many pages as we want, and that's basically how one note is set up. And then the other term that we talked about in our previous video or section groups. So if we wanted to group these together, what we can do is come up here and right click, go create a new section group and we can see this right here. So basically, we hop inside here we can have again more sections to organize everything. Right? So let's say this is our meetings or double click to change this meetings, General notes. Ah, whatever. We want to call these and then we can get out of this section group up here so we can kind of see how this has this Ah hierarchal type system for setting everything up. So these are the main sections up here again. I can rename this to be whatever I want. Uh, however, we want to organize this. This is kind of the key part. To what note is knowing how you want to organize everything. So now that you're familiar with how sections work, how section groups work, how you can hop inside of these different section groups in order to have more sections to lead down there and then each of those air going toe have their pages, you kind of get an idea of how it all organized. And now it's kind of up to you to determine exactly how you would organize everything and how you can use it best in your own work. All right, so let's move on to our next video where we'll take a look at the ribbon up here and take a look at some of the key things. The key tools in the ribbon
3. Key features in the Ribbon: in this video, we're going to learn about the key tools here in one note that are available in the ribbon . Now, if you've used any Microsoft office software before, you probably know that a lot of the work that we're going to do is reliant on understanding what's inside the ribbon. And a lot of it is very straightforward. If you've used another office tool, so you under home, they're going to have things like, You know, your copy and paste your font choices. Bold italics. Very, very basic and very common things now something to keep in mind with styles. If you're familiar with styles in word, you can access your styles here, but you can't actually create new styles in one note out of the box. There is no way to do that now. There are some workarounds to that, and we'll look at that later on in this class. But out of the box, there's no way to actually add a new style here. You also have your different tags that you can throw in there, Um, and essentially, what this is going to do is just going to add in whatever sort of a tag you want there, you can see that there under inserts. Some of the key tools that you'll need to know about in here have to do with attachments so you can add in an attachment or a print out. Now, as you can probably guess, just like a lot of the other office programs, you can actually just drag and drop in tow. One note. So we'll look at that later on in this class. That's actually my preferred method is just a dragon drop. But if you need to, you can use the buttons here, adding a spread Chief, you wanted to do that. Something I want to point out, is this recording right here, audio and video. And of course, that requires that your computer has a microphone or webcam or something like that in order to record. But I found it's really, really helpful because what you can do is you can actually record, and then one night will keep track of what you're typing as your recording. So let's take a look at this really, really quickly here. So let's say I'm going to start recording going to record audio. You can see it's starting to record and then this is really helpful. Say, if you're taking notes in a meeting or at school, because now I can just start to add bullet points that come over here. I had just starting some bullet points. Remember this? This was Ah, great point. What? Whatever sort of bullet points you want as things are being said. And then in your recording, if we stop this and then I can actually come and play this back to see what is being said when so you see this little plus right here or this little plate right here. So if I play back right here, you'll notice it's going to jump watch this time right here. It's going to jump to that point in time, so it jumps to 11 seconds in. So I was 11 seconds into the recording when I started typing this. So it's really, really quite encouraging to play around with that. I found it really helpful when taking notes in a meeting because I don't have to capture everything. Instead, Aiken tell one note to actually start recording and then just take bullet points and again , just bullet points of just something for to remind me later on. Oh, this is something I need to do. Or this is Ah, an action item I need to do or take back to my team or whatever that may be. And then later on, I could just play this back and listen to exactly what was being said at that point. Really, really cool stuff. All right, so moving right along to the next ah section in the ribbon here we had insert Let's move into draw. This is really helpful. If you especially if you have a tablet like the Microsoft surface, you can annotate your notes. So if you want to draw on something you can do that. You can highlight various aspects. You can highlight your text some pretty cool stuff. You have some various shapes that you have in here if you want to just draw on some basic shapes again. Um, this is this way because I use the highlighter so I can adjust this. Oops, There we go in order to get different shapes and colors and whatever we want. Ah, as we're actually taking notes again, it's really helpful, I found, especially if you have a tablet which I don't have on this computer. So that's why my drawings don't look very good moving along. We have history, and the key thing that I really want to point out in history here is this Recycle bin. So think of this just like the recycle bin on your computer where anything that you delete is going to go into here, and then you can either come in and you can open it up in order to restore something. So these are things that would be in the recycle bin. Let me actually come in and let's just take this page and let's see this in action here. I need to go to draw, go back to type and a deleted page so mean, delete that and the right click delete. And now if I come into my recycle bin, you can see this is that deleted page. So I can either come in and restore this by right clicking, going to move a copy and bringing it back to whatever section I wanted to move it to, um or if I wanted to actually come in and get rid of everything. I can just empty the Recycle bin and again It's just like your computer's recycle bin. It's just a place where you can restore things if you wanted to. But again, things are actually permanently deleted after 60 days. So that's something to keep in mind when you're working inside of one note and moving right along the next tab in our ribbon is review. And in here are the key things that you'll probably use the most. Ah is going to be spelling again, just its spell check, essentially, just like in word. I really don't have anything in here, so, yeah, there's there's really no spelling errors or anything like that. I'm good and these are the things I typed in here. Ah, you have research which essentially, what research is going to do is it's going to search the Web directly inside of one note. So let's say I wanted to search. Remember, church this word do have it highlighted and then select research and you can see I can actually search for this word, either in being, um or in translation to source for any of these other things. And you can actually come into your options and adding more, um, more things if you wanted to do that. But that's basically what research does. Just allows you to actually search inside of one note directly and similar for the thesaurus. Again, it's very similar concept. It's just gonna pull this over. I found this really helpful when I'm writing the thesaurus. That is where I'm trying to think of another way to phrase something, and I can just select that word and just come up and find, um, maybe reminisce instead of remember, right. It's another way of saying a very similar thing, and I can, uh, kind of go down this rabbit hole a little bit in order to find some things again. It's all just helpful stuff that now that you know it's there, you can start to figure out in your head what you're going to use these things for in your own work. The final tab in the ribbon here is view and far and away. The most popular thing that I do in this tab is to open up a new window. So what that's going to do? It's going to open up a new one note window exactly like this, and this is really helpful because now I can come in and let's say I want this over here and I am over here. Say, this is my This is my all my research, right? So this is all my research and then I'll create a section for writing and I use one note a lot for writing. So, um, this would be kind of how I would use it, so I kind of size these over squished these down a little bit, so it's easier to see. And then you can have all your research on one side and then all of the writing over there , and you can just go back and forth, and then you can open up whatever page that you want. And then over here you have everything. It's really, really helpful. You can have as many windows as you want open and come in here, and you can just start adding new windows as you want to. But that's really helpful and just kind of one of the ways that I like to use. One note is to open up new windows. You also have the ability to Dhaka window, so essentially what this is going to do is it's going to take one note and you can hit this . It'll automatically push it over to the side. I'm not going to do it in this video because that will push you over to the side of my monitor. Um, and that will make it not visible in the recording area. But what is going to do is when you the idea Is that what you're browsing? The Web? You have this docked one note window to take notes as you're browsing. And then as you take notes, the browser will send back to one note what website you're on, and it will automatically add links to those so you can kind of take notes similar to the audio where it's going to jump back and forth in the audio. Except it's going to add a link back to you when you type out this note. This is the website you were on, so you can refer back to that as you need to now, personally, in my workflow, I don't use a lot of docked windows because I like to add things manually. If I do want to link something in, um, how I want to actually do that manually myself and we can look at how will capture things later on. But if you need to do that, you can, ah, quick note. This is just exactly what it looks like. It's a little post it note, essentially, and that's this here. And basically we can see how this works. And this is helpful for, um throughout the day I'll just leave this open and there's a little thing. Somebody walks in and I need something. I just have this essentially again. It just like a post it note. Ah, virtual posted on my computer And now Aiken Axis actually open this up if I go to my normal view, and that turned out to be really huge again outside the thing. So I just sighs us in and we can see where this was sent. So this was sent to a notebook here the quick notes notebook and in my quick notes section . And over here, this is the default notebook that starts with one note, Um, so that's kind of where it's stored there. And then from here, I can move this to wherever I want to, so I could move this into my regular notebook if I want to. We would in there and then switch back and you can see There it is right there. So again, you kind of get an idea of how all of this works together and how all of these different things work together here, inside of one note to get an idea of how you might use it best. Now the very last thing I wanted to point out over here in view is always on top, and this is really helpful because it's going to keep it on top of whatever you have. So let's say I have my browser over here. You notice I'm clicking over here, and there's more to this window over here, but it's keeping this one on top. And again, this is just how awful I found when I'm browsing the Web or something like that. Want to make sure that it's always on top as I'm taking notes? Um, you can turn that on and off right here. All right, so in this video, I know we covered a ton. We got a look at some of the key features in the ribbon here. Inside of one note, I'd encourage you to go back and start playing around with some of these to get more familiar with what some of the key features are. And which one do you think you're going to be using in your day to day workflow? For now, let's move on to our next video, where we'll take a look at how we can navigate around one notes interface and features a little bit better.
4. Working with pages: in the last video. We got familiar with some of the tools in the ribbon here in one note. Now let's move down from the ribbon and take a look at the pages themselves. Course the most basic feature. And one note is writing very much like Microsoft Word in that regard. So in the page you're going to have your title, the page title. You can see it's updating Over here. We can see what that looks like and then down below. You have essentially unlimited space where you can come in and type whatever you want, right? And as I keep typing, if I scroll down here and I typed down here, you can see one note is just going to give us more space and we can just keep going down and down. Um, essentially as far as we want. Now, once we've actually type something, you notice it puts it in this little box. We can move this around the page, however, we want things, but again, just like a piece of paper, we can move this however we want. We can resize it if we need to, but by default one notes going to make this box the size of the content inside of it. So in this case, the text in there. And of course, if we need to, we can delete that. You can see that there, um safe Wanted to give this a header. My content. So you can see I'm going to come in here and like this, we can resize it to be whatever we want again. Just like word. You have all the different fonts however you want, you can actually come in and change the styles If you want to again these air pre built in one note. You can't change these by default, but I'll show you how you can actually change these later on using extension um sub header . You can change this as as Well, I mean again, it's just very basic stuff changed the highlighting or the color of the text if you want to . Very, very straightforward stuff as far as this is concerned, very similar to word in that regard. Now, one thing I want to point out is how you can actually bring in other things other than just text so we can come in and insert a file print out or attachment. We looked at that in the previous video, but as I mentioned then my preferred method is to actually drag and drop. So let's come in. I'm gonna add a new page, and over here, I actually have my files here. So I'm going to come in and let's drag this word document in. Someone's gonna click and drag. When I do that, one note is going to ask, Do you want to attach this as a file? What do you want to insert a print out? So the printout essentially is going to convert this to a pdf and then show that to us. Okay, so we'll do each one. But I'm gonna come in with the file. It's attached the file first, and we can see what that is. And now this file lives inside of that one note file. So the benefit to this is we can Then if we have that one note file sync than one drive like we did when we started this notebook. Now, if we open up this notebook in another computer, that file is stored inside of that. Now, one thing to keep in mind since is actually storing the file inside of the notebook. If you store large files, obviously that's going to increase the size of you notebook that can take up more space on your cloud storage. So that's something to keep in mind where documents tend to be fairly small, so it's usually not that big of a deal. But and then you can just double click on this. And that's going to open up word because it's a word document and you can actually see that there make whatever changes you want. And then it's all stored in there to really convenient way of having your most popular most most of your word documents in a single place here inside of one note. You can also do that. Ah, with a printout. So let's actually add a new page here. So I'm going to come in here and we can see the difference. Insert the print out what one note is going to do now. You can see it's adding it in. It's essentially printing this out, and now we have this the actual file So similar. So what we had over here we have the file. You notice it actually named the page based on the file as well. And then we have the actual print out here. So this is basically everything in that word document print that printed out so we can actually ah see it. Not only that, we can actually search through it. So if I wanted to search for this is actually ah, podcast episode on Pocahontas. So if I search for Pocahontas, you can see find on this page. There's 23 matches. So it's actually searching through that file for any time that that word was used. Really, really helpful stuff. Um, when you need to search through a ton of war documents, it's helpful if you've printed them out here inside of one note so you can actually search through all of that really, really cool stuff. And, of course, you can do the same sort of thing for a pdf again, it's just going to ask the exact same thing. You can either attach the file, or you can come in and insert the print out and again, one notes going to go through that process of essentially printing it out and adding it in so you can see scroll back up here. There we go so you can see. Here's the pdf. It's printed out and very, very similar processes, far as that's concerned. And again, we can search through this if we want to. So search not just in this section, but find on the page you can see again. We're getting all the search results throughout the entire thing, which that's really cool. But what's even better about this sort of thing is it's a cumulative. So you'll notice when I was searching but close out of this here and I'm going to search this section right so everything in this section. So this is the section here. Essentially, it's searching across all of these pages. So if I want to search for any time that that word was used, the word Pocahontas was used. You can see one notes coming back and saying, All right, it was used once here, and it was used on these other pages as well. So this page here, there it is, right there. It's not searching inside of the file because we didn't do a print out, but it can see its also right there. So these are the different places where that word was used, and it's going to highlight every time that word was used. When we search for it now, we can also search through the notebook, so this is going to get cut off here. But if I actually select this and you do that on that side, you'll see what it's going to search through. Let me pin this right here so we can see this a little bit easier. So rather than searching the section in search the section group, I can search the notebook or even search all notebooks, and that's going to search across again. Anything that we have open and that brings up something I haven't really talked about yet. We can actually have multiple open or multiple notebooks open at any given time. We'll look at that here in a little bit, but the last thing I will point out in this video is how we can actually move around our pages so we can take this. We just left click and drag in order to move this page around right. When I left quicker, I didn't see the little line there where it's going to drop. Now I can actually left click and move it to left to right in order to move it in. So there's you notice. There's three different hierarchies, essentially, so it's inside of that. And now I can dial this up and group them together. Really, really cool stuff. There's actually only even if I move this up here so I can set this here. You can see I can't actually dial it up there. It only works for the Route one in order to hide those. But it's how photo have. If you have a bunch of different pages, you want to kind of organize those that way again. It's enough, just on the another level of organization that now you know that you can do that. That's something else that you can factor into one note as you using it on a day to day basis to organize things best for you. And, of course, any point We looked at this briefly. If you ever want to move something, so say I want this page here to be over here, I can just left, click and drag in order to bring it over. Um, I can also right click in order to move or copy into that new section. We looked at that in ah previous video. When we move that out of our recycle bin, no. But you can also see all of the different notebooks that we have open. All right, So to recap, we can create move around our pages. We can actually come in and attach word documents or PDFs or whatever we want to attach. We can insert printouts, which we then we can search through. There's a lot of different things that we can do here inside of one note toe. Organize everything efficiently. The key is just how you, what tools you want to use and how you want to organize everything. So with that in mind, let's move on to our next video, where I walk through the process of how I organize one note to maybe help give you some ideas for how you can get started in your own workflow. After you see how I use one note on a day to day basis,
5. How I work in OneNote: throughout this class, we've looked at some of the key features here inside of one note, with the goal of getting up to speed really quickly. Now, I thought a great way to close out this class would be to look at some of the features that I use on a day to day basis and get an idea of how I work in one note. So hopefully it'll help spark some ideas for how you can work in one note to become more productive. So one of the favorite things that I like to do in one note is to capture Web pages, and the ability to capture Web pages is something I do all the time grabbing articles for research. So to do that, I'm going to pull over my Web browser here. What we need to do, I'm using chrome. What we need to do is to install the one note extension, and there should be an extension for any of the major browsers that you have. Don't come over here to my extensions, and let's actually find the one note extension here. Go to get more extensions, see the chrome Web store. One note the Web Clipper. This is Ah, by one note dot com. You can see there's some that are actually not official. I would highly recommend sticking with the official stuff just to play it safe. You know that this is actually from one note dot com. That's Microsoft. So we know that safe. I'm gonna add that to chrome, add it in. And now that we have this added, now we can actually start to clip things. So let's hop back to this article here, and this is just an example. But if I click on this now, we're going to be able to actually, um, send this to one note, right? So either I can clip the entire page. So basically, this is just going to be an image. I can clip just a region so I can click and drag in order to clip just that region. I can add this as an article. So what that's going to do is is going to pull in all the text. So all this text is selectable. It's going to be selectable throughout inside of one note as well. Ah, this is really helpful. As I'm reading, you know, I can highlight things. Oh, this is something I want to keep in mind. Um, whatever that might be. I'll do that while I'm researching things a lot of times. One thing to keep in mind with the article is that depending on the Web page itself will determine how well it can actually be pulled in as an article. Sometimes things pulling well, sometimes things do not. That's kind of the nature of the game when it comes to the article, or we can pull this in as a bookmark. And basically, that's just this is exactly what it's going to look like inside of one note. It's just going to pull this in so that we have this with the idea being that we could have ah, notebook or a section of just our bookmarks and store everything inside of there. And then, of course, we have the location. So this is going to ask us what notebook we want to actually put this into. So we have all of the different notebooks these air notebooks associated with my ah, my Microsoft account that I'm logged into. You can see that here. So the first time you actually install this, it'll actually don't ask you to log into a Microsoft account, and then it will pull any notebooks that you have. They're associated with that account. All of these that I have are inside of one drive and that allows them to be in there. So I'm going to add this to my articles and tell you what. Let's just add it to this three d section. It's not really relevant to that, but just so we can see what that looks like, I'm gonna pull that in. Clip that. And now let's hop back over toe one note to see what that looks like. Now, I'm actually not logged into that account. I set up a different account just just to simplify things here inside of one note, Um, for the purpose of this class so we can switch our account. I actually have another account here. There we go, hot back. And now if I come in and open a notebook, you can see it's pulling from my one drive. So now I'm able to actually open this up. Me Open up this article's notebook here, give it a moment for one note to actually start sinking everything and now we can see here is that article that we just sink very, very cool and now it's is literally just text. It's just a Ziff we had had actually type this in. We can highlight stuff if we want to weaken, draw all over it if we want to. You know, however we wanted annotate this mark this up, do whatever we want to do. We can do that here inside of one note some really, really cool stuff. And honestly, that's one of the key things that I use here. Inside of one note is to clip a lot of things into one note as I'm researching. And then what I'll do is I'll pull open a new view in order to write. And so I can have my, um, learning about one note. Whatever sort of I have, I can actually make that full screen. Not really full screen, but, you know, get rid of the, um the rest of this here. There we go. Then. I can resize this. This is easier if you actually have have it going full size because of Windows 10 the ability to actually snap stuff. But now I can come over here and have whatever I want and and be writing. Um, whatever. I'm I'm writing about it. Right. Um and of course, Wikipedia is not always the best source, but it actually does do a pretty good job of pulling in and as an article. And so I wanted to show that feature there. So that's a really popular way, really kind of the core structure to how I actually work inside of one note now, another way, something else that's really key to working here. Inside of one note is the ability to capture email. So I'm gonna hop over to Gmail here cause I actually used Gmail. I don't use one note or use outlook inside of Gmail if you wanted to send this to one note . If I have this email here, want to send to one note? There's a couple different ways we can do this. Either one. Weaken forward this email to me at one note dot com and that will forward it to your default notebook inside of one note. I'm not really going to cover that too much here in this particular class, but if you do want to read up on that, and I would recommend doing that. Here's this blogger article about how you can do that so you can send it here and it's going to send it into your default, um, notebook and your default section inside of one note. And unfortunately, you can't really change that. At this point. You can't email to a specific section. Um, so what I do is out, actually come in here and I'll print this. And when I tell it to print one of those items is going to be a destination. Just like pdf, you can actually print by sending it toe one note. So it's going to print this here, send a one note, and then it's going toe. Ask me where I want to send it. So I actually have one note open here and you can see it sent the location. So I want to send it into this section right here that I'm already in. And here is my email print out. So now at this point, I can change the title if I want to. Um, And again, it's It's a print out here so we can actually search through this. If we wanted to So if I want to search for one note on this page, you can see it's actually highlighting this stuff in here. So it it's a really nice way of archiving it and being able to see all of that really, really quickly. Of course, the researcher writing I'm doing in any given day is going to vary. And that really brings up a great point because the rial power in one note is not the tools themselves, but what you use them for. Think of it like a paper and pencil those air. Just tools to help you capture your thoughts. The words you right where the images you draw with them are what makes them special. The same is true for one note, except, of course, there's a few more tools and then with paper and pencil. But now that you're more familiar with some of the key tools to capture what's in your mind , you're ready to start using one note toe. Help you be more productive. Thanks for watching
6. Bonus: Extending the capabilities of OneNote: in this special bonus video will take a couple minutes to cover a few of my favorite extensions. So in one of our earlier videos, we learned how to change styles by selecting the text and very much like worried. You can come in and change the different styles, but as I mentioned then you can't customize those styles. You can actually change them, because by default you can't do that in one note. Fortunately, you can get some great Adan's that extend the capability of what one note can do now. I didn't include them earlier in the class because they are an added cost. So I wanted to cover the basics of one note first and before we go to advance. But one of the Adams that I use is called one note gem, and it costs about 33 bucks for one note. Gem. Um, but if you use one note day in, day out like I do, it's definitely worth it. And there's a lot of different things that you could do with one note. Jim, there's a lot of various you can see. It adds Aton of functionality in here, and we'll take a look at it here in a little bit, but that's that's one of them. The other one that I use is called one tastic. And again, this one is not free. They have a free version, but it costs 15 bucks or so for the pro version. Um, really, really cool stuff. And essentially, what one tastic does is allows you to access all of these different macros. So there's 465 different macros that people have written. Consort pages at a table of contents. Insert a monthly calendar, Ah, Thanh of different things that you could do, search and replace again. It's really, really helpful for, um, the get to get similar functionality like Inward, where you can search and replace text because you can't do that by default. And one note, it really just adds on to it. Or if you're familiar with code, you can actually use one tastic and and add in your own custom macros that you want to. So let's take a look at some of these inaction. I'm gonna hop back over toe. One note here, hop into options just to kind of show how I use these again kind of showing you my workflow . So hopefully it'll help spark some ideas for your your own coming to add INTs. And I had them disabled for this course. Enable them there. There we go. And now that they're enabled, you can see I get these extra tabs. Right? So first, let's start with Ah, actually, one tastic. Right? So this is one tastic over here. You can see these. This has been added. So I have these macros. So the macros appear on this tab? These are just a few of them that I use, So I have my word counts. I can see the word count some six words on this. Really, really great. Um, I collect the Urals or the background color. If I want to change the background color, say I want to make it a dark grey. I could do that and change the background color there against some pretty cool stuff. In one note itself, you can come in and you can change the page color, but these are the only options that you can choose from. And so I like to be able to customize it so I can come in and change this to whatever I want or I can actually add in my own, um, hex number. Just like if you're coating on the Web, you can do that. And now you can change this around to give it a completely different look that you want. So again, it's really just kind of how you want to customize it to your own, um, needs. But you can do that using one task as Faras gem. There's a lot of stuff you can do in here. I'm not going to go through all of it. Tana stuff, you know, find and replace ah, using templates more. But one of the common things that I like to do again, we have our word count. We can do that. We can actually save this out as a word document. Or pdf. If you want to do that, we can save that out there. Um, and we also have the ability to use our styles that we talked about. So we have the styles here, but we can manage them, which means we can come in and create new ones, and you can actually do that with troops. If I head back to home, you can actually do that with one tastic as well. It has its own styles built in so you can manage these, um, adjust them however you want, right, So we can change that. We select this, make it a custom style. If you wanted to do that s o what we would do is come in and say I want to change my fonts . Something kind of ridiculous. There we go. So this is this is my favorite way to do a header, right? So I can come in, save this as as a style. So this is my awesome like a tight there we go change that. And now that's one of my my style. So now if I come in and, um, change this text might it's a little bit hard to see their because I changed the background color. But if I change that now, I can come in and adjust that too. My my new style and very, very similar concept. Inside of Jim, there is a lot of overlap inside of Jim and one tastic. I use both because there are a few things like fine replace that I like in gem that you can do with one tastic. But the way that it's been written in the macro, sometimes I'm not a big fan of again. If you use one note on a day to day basis like I do Ah, it's it's really worth the extra cost. Just to add that that in there. Speaking of which, let me actually hop over here, and I'm going to open up to notebooks that I use for my podcast. Um, that's where I do a lot of work inside of one notice for the podcast. So I have my based on a true story, which is the name of the podcast. And then I also have the archive. So my basic process here is if I hop over to you needed to actually open this one. There we go. So in here, basically all have a tab for each of the episodes. And then you can see all of the various, um articles and various things that I've actually done pulled for research. And then what I'll do is I'll have this view open toe open, a new view. Let me make this smaller and switch this over here again. I've kind of gone through this before but you can see exactly how I do it. So I switch my So this is writing, right? So this is what I've written for this. And then this is all the research, so I'll just resize this and it works a lot better when you're not recording a video and with limited screen real estate, you have the entire screen like I actually multiple monitors. So have it up on one monitor and the other. So this is all the writing. And then I have the various research that can pull from, um, and here or if I need to pull in new research, I conduce that as well, of course you know, searching the web in and that that regard. We already learned how to do all of that. But one thing I wanted to show here is once I have all of this done, I can come into one tastic, and I can collect all of these clipped Urals. This is actually the primary reason why I bought one tastic was for this one thing. And this was actually something that the author of the tool when tastic I reached out to him really great guy and he helped right this for me. So essentially I can come in, clip all of this and watch what's going to happen. It's going to go through everything in this section, and it's going to give me a single list of all of the various sources that I've captured all of the different Web pages that I've captured. Once we give it a moment, here we go. It's running that and should finish up here in a second. All right, there we go. So this is all of the clipped your URLs. So this is literally just a list of all of the different, um, sources that I have and I use this I'll just cut and then take this and then throw that as the actual sources, um, for each episode of the podcast so people can see and they can start to dive in a little bit deeper into all the different articles and different research that I've done for any individual episode. Um, of course, it doesn't show things like, you know, inside the actual books themselves. But then that's copyrighted material. And so you read a lot of books and then just linked to the actual Amazon page there. All right, so that's a look at my two favorite Adan's for one know. And I know we covered a lot in this video. Um, we didn't really get a chance to go through all of the different things, but hopefully it gives you an idea of how you can start to use one note. Um, and of course, they're not required. But it does really extend the capability of one note to get stuff done. And now I'd like to throw the question back to you. How do you use one note after you've gone through this class? How are you intending on using one note? Or did you find a favorite Adam for one note that you use? I'm always looking to improve my own process, and I'd love to hear about it. Let me know in the discussion for this class. But until then, thanks for watching
