Quick & Easy 3D Letters in Procreate

1. Introduction: Hi, My name is Lisa Long. I'm a digital lettering artist, an illustrator have taught in public schools for 11 years, and I love making things look three dimensional. I love three D so much that this is actually my second class on greedy letters and procreate. Have you ever wondered how to create those fast and easy three D letters, words or phrases inside of procreate along this class? I'll be sharing with you how to import tax inappropriate. A quick and easy way to create the three D effect. How to add a cast shadow. How to add more details inside the letters themselves to make them stand out and shaving a texture with some guidance and lighting and color. This classes for anyone who wants to know how to make three D letters quickly and easily inside of her creates, gather up your supply. You'll need an iPad that supports the apple pencil, an apple pencil, the app procreate and over. Now let's have some fun and get on with the class 2. Importing from the Over App: Okay. Hi. Welcome to my little short tutorial on three D lettering with the at procreate. And I'm going to be importing a word from my over app over is a great little app that you can use to at pre made letters to procreate. So you don't have to do so much work to create them from scratch. So let me go ahead and show you in over. All you do is create a new document and go in and add some text, right your word, and then choose a font. So many bonds that you can choose from a lot of them are the pro version, so those you'll have to pay for, but a lot of them are also free. So, um, we're just going to choose this. Um, listen, that have already done this is using the tip, not tip Nick font. And you can create different styles with aligning spacing. You can put it all in caps, which iss you can make it curved, so but kind of cool. All right. We're just gonna do it straight today. You could change the color of it inside this app, or you can do that and procreate as well size. I like to make it as big as I can without it going anywhere so that it translates over really well to procreate. You could add a shadow in this as well. But you can also do that really easily inside of procreate. There's lots of things you could put this diagonally, save some time and procreate, but we're just going to leave it straight with no shadow. And then, um, what we're gonna do, tend, move this over to procreate. Just gonna click the check and then we're gonna click this little arrow going out. We're gonna push, share and then copy so we don't have to store this anywhere except inside the app. And then we're just going to double click good or at procreate. And then I can either go to the tool and click image and paste, or I can drag three fingers down and paste it and it pays to write and to procreate. So awesome. And then I have this word in here and notice while I was in over. I have a transparent background. That's how you don't get a white box around it. 3. The 3D Effect: right now on to making this three d my favorite thing to Dio. So what I want to do first is duplicate this layer. So I have two of them, and I'm gonna turn this one off and just keep it in the background. If I need to use it later, I'm going to duplicate this letter layer again. But I'm gonna change the color and to quickly do that, all I have to do is select that layer, change my color, so whatever color you want, and then make a new layer and tap on that new layer and push Phil Layer. Then when I go back to the black layer and I'm gonna go over here to my wand and click motion blur and I'm just gonna drag my pencil at an angle to make a little motion blur, then I'm going to tap on that layer, select that layer, go to a new layer, and I can turn off this layer at that point. So I remember not to use it. And then I'm gonna tap on my brush and I want the airbrushing hard airbrush and I'm going to use black just so you can see it, but you can choose any color you want, and then make sure I'm in a new layer blank layer. Make sure you have the brush selected, and then I'm just going to color the sin. And you want to go over this at least twice so that you're sure to get all that blurriness gone and have a nice hard edge. Okay, so now I have to de select by pressing that select button and then press my arrow button and then just drag it down into place, and you want to be sure that you're not leaving a little outline around the edges so you can zoom in to see. I like to use my finger to drag so that I have more control. My pencil tends to slide, especially when I let go. There have cool shadows. Three. The three D block lettering effect 4. Cast Shadow: no. Then to create a cast shadow like let's say, there's some light up here hitting my word here, and then it casts a shadow down here. So I'm going to use that word. Now I can delete this motion blur, layer, going to use this this layer here that's invisible and just select it. And then I could make a new one here, and I'm just going to take my motion blur again, and I'm gonna drag it in the opposite angle. Then I did the first time and then the same thing. I'm going to select that layer at a new layer, turn off that motion, blur layer and go to my heart, airbrush and color that in. Then I want to turn off the select, go to that layer. I just colored in and change the opacity to around 20%. Then I'm going to click on the arrow and drag this down into place, and I'm lining this up with the bottom edge here. So I want to make sure that it's lined up like really well there. So I don't want this sticking out over here, and I can use my finger to make sure It's nice and accurate, and I find it works better if I have, um, freeform on rather than magnetic magnetic controls it too much for this. And then if you need to nudge it a little bit, you can always tap to nudge it into place. If it's getting hard for you, toe to put it into place. If you nudge, it, moves it. That's nudging. Okay, now it's in place. 5. Shading & Texture: It looks really cool right there. You could stop, but let's do one step further. So for adding shading around my three D letters, I'm gonna go in and change this layer that has the three d effect to white. Just gonna double swipe to the right That puts an Alfa lock on it. And then I can just fill that in with white. Now, I want to keep this layer showing I wanna select it and add a new layer that I'm gonna changed back to black. And then I want to go to my sketching tool. Grab some kind of, um I love to use the bonobo talk for texture. You can use whatever you want for tax chairs. Some people use an airbrush and then I'm just going to start shading. That's my light is coming in From this way, anything on this side is going to be dark and anything kind of catching the light will be a little lighter. So as I go up the side on the light in my pressure and it will get lighter everything on the sides dark because it's not in the light and everything on the bottom would be really dark because it's not in the light, not shading. A fact really captures the three D nous, so you always have to have a light source in mind and can make it continuous. Keep that light source in mind while you're doing this so that it will look realistically three d so you don't have ah obvious or continuous light source. You don't have continuity with your light source. They won't look real. You know something about it will look off. I'm just making the bottoms a little darker. What? The banana track. It's really easy. You just kind of go back over it back to my Oh, oh boy, this is fun. Zoom in to get more accuracy, and if you need to, you can erase. You can go to the sketching and use the same tool, your using the same. Brush your using to draw in a little race, and I'll look very ah, much like the same so that it doesn't look weird. If you're erasing with, like, an airbrush or something, it's a little bit more that's capturing a lot of light. This is not, and having that shadow with the capacity down really makes it easy to change the background color, and it won't matter what the shadow color is cause it'll just make it look like a shadow. Like if you put texture in the background, then you know it would capture all of that. But if you just make this a gray shadow, it'll look weird and I'll show you what I mean. But the shadow, What if I change this to hey, like Gray? Yeah. See, that doesn't look like a shadow anymore. But if I have it at Black and then just lower the opacity, it's actually like a working shadow. Pretty cool. 6. Masks: So I'm going to start by selecting the Slayer, going to a new layer and filling it and then turning that layer off because I I just like to keep extra copies. Just so if I mess up, I can always just go revert back to that instead of having to backspace because you can't backspace to infinity. If you make a lot of strokes and you want a backspace out of that, there is a limit. I found that out the hard way. Okay, so I have my new layer made, and I can change whatever color I want. I'm just gonna go ahead, make it a white base layer, and then I'm gonna make a new layer on top of that and go ahead and select this layer. And I'm going to add a mask to this layer just by selecting my new layer and tapping on the mask button. Whatever I draw in this layer will show up inside the shadows and nowhere else. So let me show you what I mean. I'm gonna use a sketching brush, and I'm going to make sure that I have this layer seven highlighted, not the last player, okay. And then I'm going to draw across the surface. I noticed that it only shows up where I have been mask. If I turned that mask off Bam, Now you can see all my strokes so they're not gone. They're all there. They're just covered by a mask. And that's the beauty of masks. So if I want to move this layer around, it's still masked in the same spot. So what I have to do has turned that mask off, moving around to a new spot. And then I would clear that mask. I'm going to go to my back to my text layer. Select it. Then I'm going to go down to this selection here and invert it. So now my word is not selected in my background is so I can go ahead and fill that again to think that mask. So it's very cool. You don't actually lose. You're drawing. It's just it's all there. It's just been masked. It's kind of cool. I like using masks sometimes, especially if I'm gonna be doing a texture layer 7. Adding Interior Texture: so there's lots of brushes you can use to make texture like we discussed before. Um, I love all these sketching brushes give nice texture, and there's painting brushes that give nice texture the artistic brushes air really fun to play around with. I'm really like this oil paint brush cause I can go in and paint and paint and smears so much fun. I can change the color because the cool like painterly texture so you could do stuff like that changes colors, and they all blend together. With this. Oil paints wet. It's wet paint. That's one way to gussy up your letters. And, of course, you can change size. I was 11. Go ahead and play around with that oil brush. So much fun you don't wanna remember. The light is coming and hitting from the top right so I can come and put some highlights. Stare and then I can use a black to come in and put some shadows. It's always thinking about light with three D letters because there's three D and the only way to really make him look through the besides the shape is with shadings. Then I like to go in with some white. Then you can play around with the hue, the saturation, the brightness make something that stands out. I really like this, um, toned down orangish color against this turquoise E bluish background because they're opposite colors. So they really help each other pop, and they're not too bright. They're kind of toned down, so they're great out a little bit so that they don't clash too much and cause our eyes to strain when they when we see them. So that's I'm a little about color, too. 8. Interior Shadows: Let's say I'm not really happy with this layer anymore. So I can turn it off and I can come here, select it, make a new layer a mask that area out. And let's say I want to go back here. Diesel left nous and choose my sketching pencil. And I want my interior shape tohave kind of an inset look. So I'm gonna put a shadow in here now. Have to remember my light source is coming from you make a new layer from the top. Okay, So much changed a black. So if my life sources sitting here is going to create a shadow on the interior space So I'm gonna swing this around so it's easier for me to draw, so my light source is coming down this way. So I have a rim here. I'm gonna go back to my mask layer and oh, neato! Make this smaller. If I want an inset Look, I'm just gonna create shadow on the left interior space and anything that the light would hit. I wanted to leave it white, So the lights gonna hit here, But it's gonna have a shadow on this side. I come around and create this interior space this way. Now, this is the hard way to do it. Because I didn't make my shape a bigger and having outline beforehand. But you know you can eyeball it. No, Look, hand drawn. Give this text a nice, hand drawn kind of feel because we did import this from over and we did not draw it. This, you know, create makes it unique, gives us our own little twist. No one else did that. So we can come in and do it, make it our own somehow chain. So the light would hit this area in this area so we don't shading there. And we can do that to the rest of them, too. So the top and then the right side. - Okay , so now we have an interior shadow that makes these look like they're have this inset interior. And what we can do is take that layer and give it a little galaxy and blur, and it looks like a little bit of shadow. I need a whole lot of galaxy Ambler, or we can leave it with that nice hard edge. Either way, it looks pretty cool 9. Outline & Interior Patterns: we could put that on top of their a hand. This is kind of cool. We could go around and your race the edges and create an outline effect that way. Kind of, you know, looks hand drawn. Gives you an isil outlined to your letter. Well, let me show you something really cool. So I'm going to group all of these together. And what I want to dio is select this and start a new layer with black. My turn, all that off that I just did. Now I'm going to select this again, create a new layer with the shadows, and underneath Here I am going to make my word. Haven't outline around each letter first before I do all the shadows whom, when I use the galaxy and blur, I'm going to blur this maybe about 8%. It really depends on your, um, dot branch. So, after I'd give it the blur, I'm going to duplicate this and you can start See this black outline forming, and I'm gonna pinch all those together duplicated more so that it The blur starts going away a little bit blurry still. Ah, nice heart edge formed. Great. Now each letter has an outline, and from that layer, I can then give it. Actually, I want to keep that layer, duplicate it, give the bottom one emotion blur that creates my three D effect. And then it becomes a little harder to place. So I like to make sure you come over here. You can always turn down the opacity of your top players, or and or change this white or another color. That way, I can really make sure I'm lining this up and use your finger and nudge if you need Teoh and then once again used this black layer, duplicate it motion, blur the other way. Turn it off. So let now I can easily change in the interior of the space Had some kind of texture or design. You know, you could put lines in there fun, and then you can still, if it can change the color of that outline, you can play around with different ways to make your lettering stand out. 10.
