@myraandjean | Punch Needle Fun

Teacher

Hi guys, thank you so much for visiting my page!

I started @myraandjean in 2016, but it wasn't until a year later when I found punch needle rug hooking that I started focusing solely on fiber art. I started making kits when there weren't any available and later started teaching workshops.

Teaching has become my favorite part of owning a business and since I couldn't teach everyone who wanted to learn due to geographical restrictions I published an online course. I'm hoping to expand the library with fun videos that go more in depth when it comes to punch needle such as working on large scale projects and creating textured pieces with just one tool.

Recently, I have started a podcast called Makers Chat where I interview fellow artists and I'm having lots of fun ... See full profile

1. Introduction: Hey guys, welcome to the sculpt and flower online course. I'm so excited that I'm finally launching those quarters because a lot of you have been asking for it. So I'm going to show you how to work on this texture and how to make it happen. This is definitely an intermediate course. So if you don't know what I'd do punch ETL, please review the basics course first, and then let's do this. Let's get started. Okay. 2. Supplies: For the scope of our project, we need the following supplies. Flying and Brandy arm will ease. Thick and quick. Super long name in fisherman and in butterscotch. Some good scissors for sculpting. And also final ones for details. Club or punch needle in 5.5 millimeters or anything, punch needle you make half that will be able to use this yarn, Elmer's glue, to finish up the UI, as well as some clips. Morgan no-slip group, 12 inches at a piece of linen, 16 inches in diameter, that will be stretching into our no-slip OOP. And your printed design. As well as a wooden embroidery hoop for finishing in 12 inches. And you can optionally also get a background which you can put your flower into to gang up on the wall. 3. Punching: Okay, So the trace, the design, I already made a mistake and I trace it on top. If you're just punching, you can absolutely. I prefer to punch from here. When I'm in punching in the hoop. However, if I'm sculpting, I like to punch from the bottom side so I can actually have all this open for my sculpting area. Okay, so teaching moment, yay. Okay, So how did we transfer from the bottom, it's going to be pretty easy. You just set your design on your paper and you can kind of see, zoom in for you. You can kind of see the design. I can see it really wild. So you will be able to as well. So you can align everything properly, or you can set this up against a window. It's going to be easier because this is the flat side. So you can just push this against the window and trace from this side. Okay, so I will be right back when I do. Now that my design is traced from the right side. You can see I had good amount of negative space around it. I think it's cute this way. It's going to pop a little bit more. In picture from the side. It'll be a little bit smaller and hover if you would like to make it larger. Go ahead. So I'm going to thread my needle. We're going to start with punching. And I've already set it to the highest setting out to kinda twist and then go up and then wait for the little thing to go into the setting. All right. So when we're sculpting, normally when you're punching, I tell you Don't don't over clench and make your stitches too short because it'll be worked on the other side, you will have uneven surface. In this case, we want that because we want a lot of yarn. So when we trim it, it'll kinda open up like a flower and you'll have a really good amount bears. Okay, so now you can either set your hoop on the skin of yarn or anything that'll lift it off the surface. And I will go almost every hole. So about every second hole probably. And I like to go and circular motion as you know, if you watched my basic course. The, the, the boops, the loops are a really nice long side. If you wanted longer loops, Let's say you want it then, as long as this needle is, is, you're punching. You can hold the yarn, the pension law, and then watch on this side, or you go away and then times. And then again niche. And this might actually be fun for the center. So let's do that. I'm going to keep this here because I'm going to cut it on, on an angle. So I'm going to punch like that. So we have super long loops. I think it'll be really Q for the center. What you can also do is just keep the center as loops. Because this yarn kinda tends to get really clearly looking when it's loops and when it's longer loop. So I think that would be really cute as well. I'm just going to continue punching like this. Careful not to punch yourself. Luckily, this needle is not sharp. So you can't really hurt yourself, but you know, you want to be careful. Okay. So I'm just going to continue in this way doing the next Raul and then going all the way in the center. And I'm going to be right now. But how could they see what I mean about it being super curly? And me not wanting to really trim it because I just love how while it looks. You can tell when you look here, just do you see the outline here of the yarn? When you clench? There we go. When you plan to wear like super tightly, you see how it's worked, you see how it's opened up. Like this. It's opened up. So it's, it's actually only this. This is the diameter, but when you see one opens, it goes away further. Okay, So this is the center. Now we're done with that. When you have yarn around, it'll get a little bit more tight like that. So I will leave it this way. I love it. Now, we're going to punch the petals. As you punch, you will probably punch, oops, punch through some of the mustard yarn. So if you would like, and it helps for sculpting, just kinda watch it here around the other art yarn. I like to hold it this way. Two, that way they don't get makes you all just have less clean out to do at the end. 4. Sculpting: All right, It's a finished punching the pedal and this is just to show you about how long my stitches are. And when I say long, I mean, how far do you go with your needle from one stage to another? And you can already see the other side. Look at all those yummy loop, so much better. Oh my goodness, but lookup, you 20, you compare this battle to this. This is giant, enormous and this is what we want. This, we want a lot of material to work with. We want something that's Chunqiu, something that's a war, be something that's well, yummy texture. Sorry, I don't want to sound like a weirdo. Egn me who let's put the punching away for a second. So I'm going to grab my scissors. And I'm going to sculpt by kind of angling my scissors about 45 degrees. And I'm going to cut, I'm going to let the bottom blade guide me of round edge. I'm going to push all the way to the edge of that petal. And I know a lot of that jamminess will go away, but that's okay. Okay. Now we're going to continue cutting. This is just a basic snip. Okay. So we're not too worried about how it goes. By the way, I do recommend wearing a face mask. For those, There's a lot of fiber flying around and you don't want to be breathing all that it, okay? Okay. So we can already tell that the shape of the petal is really nicely defined, right? So now I'm going to insert the scissors in between the mustard and the cream as much as possible. He cut some of the mustard While no big deal. And I'm going to give it a little bit of a better snip here. Okay? Now, what we have is this side is this. It always looks like rise to people. I don't blame. I'm gonna, what I'm gonna do is say here first and I'm going to move to this section and then I'm going to keep angling upwards until I'm all the way up. Okay, so now I'm going to cut this next one. And if I'm holding the scissors are currently or if it seems that way I probably am because I'm trying to keep those not turn us too much for you guys so you can actually see what I'm doing. So, okay, so I did another layer and now I'm gonna go to the top. Just to please. You always will have some loops that are going to stay on cat. That's okay. We're going to address them in a little bit for now. All we're looking for is the general shape of the petal. Now what we're gonna do is we're going to vacuum is okay. Vacuum is a really good, you're a really good friend when it comes to sculpting. Okay. So you've seen me going like this. You don't have to worry about with vacuum will pull the loops because they're really, it's just really deaths here. So you don't have to worry about that. But what it will help you with is pull all these loops that were kinda height, right? So right now I'm just going to go in and I'm going to try to catch as many as I can without trimming too much, disrupting the shape of the whole petal. Because I'm going to use the other scissors for that. So I'm going to pull this out from the shape. See how much was actually hiding. Okay, I'm going to try to catch as many as I can. Look at this long one here. Okay? And now I'm going to write just the surface of those that I've called that are super long. To second see what's happening. Okay, now we're going to vacuum again. Okay? So this is what the petal looks like from this side. So what I wanna do, what I like to do with the flower petals is kind of go like this here. So I'm going to trim all this simply by going like this over the edge. Trigger. A link my scissors with the tip going inwards to the to the mustard color. And thinking about the scope thing is that you kinda have to set your limits for when you're done and because it's possible that you ever will be okay, vacuum again. Okay. This is pretty good. I like the way this is shaped. So now I'm going to work on this area here. So I'm going to go around and just kinda even it out. I like to go around the edge again and just really get close to the base of the loops. Like something's happening here. Okay, so I think this is really good. This is what it should look like. We have a really nice dome shape, this loop. From all sides it does look like right? When it does feel like a blob of rays but it's fat. So what I'm gonna do is I'm going to punch a petal next to it, either one of these guys. And I'm going to show you how to trim when you have a petal next to the one that you've already punched, I'll be right back. Okay, So we're done. And with the second shape here, and you can see the difference between the cat and the uncut. Huge, huge, huge difference. So what I'm going to do now, same process. Again. I'm just really making sure that I don't touch this one, right? So I'm going to insert mine, my needle, my scissors, and I'm going to go around this petal. And at this point, since you already have one petal, you can engage the height of the other petals based on this one. If you want them to be, you know, even the same height, the same with the same sort of shape and the dome and everything. You have. Your first one that you can compare the rest to. I like to kind of go close but not I don't like to make them two identical because well, it's just me. I feel like petals and flowers or number. The same anyway, so it's okay. But if you feel like you want to, you can. Now here's the thing. See how I didn't pull the loops through as I did with this one in the beginning. And now you see what happens. So I did that to show you the difference. Almost done with the basic shape. Just going to continue going long while I'm here, look at that. Going from one side to Member. Wow, same Luke. Okay, so now pretty much got the shape of the data. Now, the actual design doesn't have all the, sorry, but holes even either. So I'm not going to attempt to make them even. But like I said, if you wanted to, you can because even though you're punching a specific area, you're not really staying within the boundaries too much anyway, because, you know, the way that the yarn is DOM, it'll just be bigger anyway. So we are not attempting to be perfect here. If you want to compare the two, you can obviously see this one is a little bit bigger than this one, not a whole lot. When you want to compare the height, you can look. And you can see that this one is a little bit taller than this one. Again, totally up to you if you want to make them, even for if you want to make or if you want to keep them this way. I'm not going to make them even because I don't want to, but if you do, totally fine. So what I'm going to do now I'm going to leave the rest of the super-duper trimming to the end. So I'm going to punch all of the petals and ship them as I go the same way I just did these two. And you, when I'm done with that. Okay, so the flower is creating much death. And we're going to do now is we are going to clean up. Just kinda wanna look at the overall shape and just trim what you don't like. Basically. I don't like to say, you know, you have to do in a specific way because it's going to be so you kinda get to shape them however you want to. But I'm showing you how I'm doing this. And then you can take whatever you want premise and make it your own. So I'm just going mostly surface clean up, shaped clean up. This is going to be a very dusty okay. And did you notice how much smaller the center got? Because everything around us around it as punched now. So it's cute, it's puffy. I will trim these long ends here. This is probably from when I was trimming the the cream color and I just happen to trim some of that as well. It's okay. I don't mind actually going to leave some showing a little bit. I think it adds to the texture if you prefer, you can just trim them shorter so they're hiding in between the loops. And okay, I can see here some things a little sticking out. This isn't really going. And the main goal I wanted to. So unless there's what I was telling you, where do you when do you stop? When are you done? You'll want this to be a little more defined, those slopes going down there. So that's what I'm doing right now. I just want the center to stand out more. Okay. I am happy. I am happy with this. I'm going to give it a light in vacuum, nothing too major because I don't want to keep pulling more loops. Okay, So this is just about done. And I'm going to show you now how to transfer it to another. 5. Finishing: To finish this app and I'm going to take this out of the non slip Hou and I'm going to put it in a regular or irregular within 12 inch. Who? That's for embroidery that you can get in any craft stores. I'm only going to use the bottom of this hill over here. That because I need a glue the fabric onto it, a need to stretch this regularly as I could into even the non-slave CPU doesn't have to be stretched all the way just to your preference, whatever. However stretched you want the fabric to be. Of course, make sure that it's centered, which at this point it is not. You can see how much it's closer here than here. So I'm just going to pull him aside a little bit more. Cve helps Much better if it doesn't, you can always take it out and just redo it. Because once you glue it, you know, we don't want to have to redo it, although you could, but you don't want to. Okay. So this is this is pretty good. Like I said, it's not super stretched by its stretched. And now what I'm going to do is I'm going to secure that is as much as I can. And he watched my basics course, you know how to do this, but I'm going to show you real quick, we're just skimming Elmer's glue. And I'm going to apply the glue along the perimeter. Okay. And now all we have to make sure is that the fabric is folded over. And we're going to use these are unlimited as these little magic clips. Because careful, because some hoops are pretty wide and these tend to break. You have maybe office clips that you would like to use. Instead you can do that. They actually work much better. I just don't own any for not enough to actually use for this. There we go now at book. And it was because this was all the way down. Once this is all done, I would give it about four hours. It's usually fine. A curve Hubble by. I like to do this and then actually just leave it overnight. So the glue dries. And then once it dries, we can take the outer hoop and we can secure it into B, the visual. It's optional, you don't have to. I like to even just seeing it as it is without anything else. So once this is glued and the fabric is really due to the hoof, need to make sure that it is. We're going to take this off and we're going to take the outer hoop off. And like I said, you can just hang this as it is if you'd like. I think it looks really pretty and delicate on itself. You could cut off the excess fabric here if you prefer to do so as well. I won't because I'll be gluing adherent. You can't really tell, so it's fine. And making sure that the hanging part is on top. And we need to center this to make sure that it is even. And then once you have that, you can either use Elmer's glue. I'd probably use a hot glue gun just because it'll hold a little bit better. So you can just glue it to this and it'll be ready to pay.
