1. Introduction : Hi, it's radical. Digital artists working as a freelance illustrator. In this class, I'll be teaching you guys how to create stylized faces from scratch to the complete project. In this class, you will be studying how to draw faces from like growing sketch and adding base color to it, adding shading to create beautiful illustration, you will learn how to add lights and effects to your illustrations. And so in this, you will be learning how to do sketches from references as well as from imagination. We will be studying about big, medium and small shapes, how to pick colors. Your illustrations like complimentary is split complementary analagous colors we will be discussing about color blending, as well as hard edges and soft edges in paintings that require specific strokes or brushwork. So all that things are included in it. So I'll be hoping you guys to see you in the class, so get ready with it. You will enjoy this class and yeah. 2. Procreate advance settings : So in this class we will talk about Procreate settings here. And as you can see on top right corner, there is a plus button you can create canvas from there. There are many options below. And here we are, we are inside it. And now the basic thing is creating layer, as you can see, just tap on plus and you will create and that layer and clipping mask will allow you to draw inside the whatever you have drawings like this. And you can have Alpha Lock also. By using Alpha Lock also you can draw the things inside the your paintings or line art or paint layer and like that. So there are some few adjustments, as you can see here, liquefied tool, which is very useful in setting things up in sketches as well as in paintings. So there are many option push too. All right, we'll lift, pinch, expand crystals, explore these options so we'll understand better what to use for yourself. As you can see, you can also reconstruct it. Like if you have done things and you want to get all things back on what we are there so you can reconstruct it and there is adjusting amount. You can add just the amount that you did. So you can adjust those. So there is another tool which is Select tool in this you can see there is Automatic freehand and rectangle and Eclipse option. So by selecting, you can do things like this using Freeform Uniform Distort warp. These are some features that you will need in the classes, so you should get hands on it and try to do some extra things. We did, be creative with it so you can do things like this. And the shortcut key is one tap. And in which I'll be explaining how I use shortcuts also in Procreate. So these are basic selection and all the tools you need to know. And one thing is there that these tools are very handy in initial sketch. More so in sketch things. So here, there are my quick menu. So as you can see, there is a lot of options. You can enable it in from Gesture controls. So here it is. Quick menu, just tap on it. Touch last option you can create, click OK, click on it and create quick menu for it. And you can set all the things inside it. So, yeah, so these are the basic settings that you should know and practice things or get to know this and it will be helpful in the classes upcoming. So these are my basic settings am adjusting for you. Some of those like opening color panel and I'll see you next time. 3. Sketch and shape design : So in this class we'll be studying sketch and shapes design. So let's do it. And in this class will be first starting about the circle, which is the head size. So you just have to draw the circles. You can use references from Pinterest or Google or from your friends. So here I'm using one from all the world. So take a look at it. And as you know, the skull is round. So here That's why I'm ready like that. And there is a skull things, eyes and nose. So this is the reference I'm falling for now. So making cheekbone surrounded this level is like a initial level so you don't have to worry about the outcome just to try and adjust things, create new layers with like. As you can see, there is a sculpt skull type things. I have made it out like groaning. They're on half of their like when you slice it in half, there is the eye level and below half of it, there is a half part below it. So after 50% of it is around the mouth and about 20%, it is not like that. As you can see, I have made out the proportions quite well. So you need to find out these landmarks in the references so that you can clearly make something good. So if your proportions are out of hand, so it will be getting to distract you and non appealing. So you have to know that. And here I'm just creating sketches with layers and managing opacity. So in this will be also something about the shape design also in upcoming minutes. So here you can see I'm just adjusting few things from selection tools as you are. I have told you about this. Tools are very important to add those things are and erasing things and making is quite a hassle, but you need to do it to create something good. The shape design is like that. Abc. As you can see, these shapes are appealing. So you have to maintain these forms. When you have creating something. Like I'll be doing those shape design in hairs, like creating big, medium and small shapes of hairs. And as you can see, there is a square rectangles and triangles. So that is very appealing that how you can design things out and it will look interesting. So these are just examples. Here I'm drawing I and giving him it's proper design and some adjustment. So as sample of shape design here is big, medium, and small ship design, as you can see here from my character. And there is another one, as you can see on top, beak and medium and small, like I have created it. So these are some factors you would need to consider to create, design. Big, medium, small, as you can see from waste. So these are some shapes that you need to follow order so that your design will look appealing. So now we're back to our face design. So here I'm just erasing and doing stuff. I bro, is quite good. You can just from copy and duplicate from another one, but I'm just drawing. Sketching things will make you sketch a lot of gas, so don't, don't just copy and duplicate things. So it will help you and it is tough. You can also rotate canvas as I'm doing. So it will help like seeing the real picture from different angle. So now here I'm just creating some depth to the character from bottom. And that was in the reference. So you can add some extra stuff like goggles, hearings and all that from other references as well. But I'm keeping this one as simple as possible so you can implementing this one in your simple drawings. So yeah, there is option flip horizontally, you have to flip it and adjust it by war. Because flipping horizontally make your I hit Refresh so you can see things differently and it will know you that what is wrong with it. So flipping Canvas help a lot. And I'm drawing some lips here. As you can see, some trial and error. And I'm here using my shortcuts. I have told you about in Procreate settings, about advanced settings from one tab, I'm just tapping it and going from painting to so it is just some trial and errors in this sketch things. So you have to lay out your sketch properly because it is the foundation of your paintings so that we are going to do. So there is a shadow thing in the lip below, so I have grown that. So flipping canvas will help a lot like a horizontally you can see the things with a fresh eye and do things accordingly like sometimes it will look. So yeah, flipping Canvas helps a lot. And as I have told you about shape designs that I'm going to use in deep hairs. Here, as you can see, I'm building some shapes like the flow, the sides one ran the top ones. So yeah, like that, There's always a big, medium, small shapes so you have to erase and make things right. Like it should not be in a pattern way. So you have to take care of that so easily. You can create these types of painting on top of it. As you can see, I also created, it's been Herrmann. So I've just modified it with some extra things and we are only focusing here on face. So that's why I'm not drawing the below part. Like I had made it simple. The shirt. So yeah. And adjusting few things is a very necessary like the proportion like as you can see here, it is some kind of narrow down. I'll use Warp tool to extend it. As you can see, it has some stuff. Warp tool and flipping canvas will help you a lot. And I just think it accordingly because in Sketch progress, you can do those things after that. For painting, then you can change those things so you have to take care of that before. As you can see, this is just the touch-up process, so I'm doing that right now. We are almost done. So we got the sketch for our painting. So we'll be doing painting in the next class. We'll be studying all the colors and all the things you need to know about it. So yeah, see you in the next class. 4. How to pick colors: So in this class we will be studying about choosing the right colors for your sketch. Here, I have created a layer below the sketch to add selection tools. So by using that, I can just create paints to things inside it. So selecting tools helps a lot. So yeah, as you can see, just to use free hand one and draw on top of it again. Later on, you have to just save and load and color fill. So yeah, check that too loud. And it is very useful also. And for the colors, there are multiple types of color palettes. Split complementary and a logos, tetrarchic, triadic and all that. But will be only focusing on analogous palette because it will help us to create things smoothly. As you can see when I color pick up, I always go from logos palette. As you can see here, I'm in cool colors too. There is a warm color on cheats like that. And I'll be explaining you these things in details in about up to few minutes. So here I have saved it and I'll be filling it with any color so that I can only paint inside it and just name it anything. And here are some samples. And as you can see, I'm always in the same palette. Like here. It is warm colors. And when you go, as you can see, I'm going from 25 per cent, almost below the base color. So yeah, there's a reason you have to go below 25 per cent of it. And if you are going cooler, does change the hue. And if you are going Walmart agenda, change the hue to or at a site like that. So here it is. As you can see also, the shadows are always below 25 per cent. Here is the one-sample I'm going to explain with the universal sample, which is circle, will be rendering this one. So here as you can see, I'm going down for twenty-five percent. You can use a soft brush airbrush or anything. But here I'm using the round brush with the opacity. So it is looking quite good. So I've selected that previous color and down for 20 per cent or 25%. So this is what I got. And for highlight, I'm going some distance towards a white color. So this is how the circle is rendered. So basically you have to keep in mind like this. If you want to go cooler, stylized, you can go towards the cooler side like magenta, purples and all. So to look stylized, this is what I did in the hair. As you can see here from base colors, I have added 25 or 20% below it. With shapes and the cheekbones, nose and eyes have gradients, like you have to add gradients to process further. So gradients are important as well. Try to add gradients in your paintings. Here I'm adding colors to the outfit that I have drawn. The main point is our face, but take care of other things as well. So yeah, I'll be creating another layer for the base color like eyes, nose and lips are remaining. So these are counts and the base colors. So we will be adding that. I'm using year-round simple brush, which has no opacity. And one with the opacity one. I have just added some details to the eye and some eyelashes there. As you saw that reference from us. So I'm kind of falling bit off from there. So giving those textures in the eyes, I'm doing these before adding the pupils inside the color like gray one. So you need to take care of these things before. And here I'm adding the color gray colors should not be pure gray. You can add a light gray towards schools and all. And Gil the pupils black color. So here as you can see, we are done with the eyes and there is another thing left, which is lips. We'll be adding some colors to it, which is flat color and giving some edges to it because we know that there is an edge. And you, by using smudge tool, I'm just creating some illusion of 3D version. As I have shown you in bio rendering that circle, as you saw. This applies here as well. So if you are mastering rendering sphere circle, then you will know that how it is done. So this is almost done. The base colors are almost done. I'm not rendering here too much, just a bit. There is a 20 per cent below red. So how I did that, because it is in the shadow and it is almost looking done to me. And you can create a layer on top of that and do some changes. Like here I have extra things, so I have it raised it. In next class, we will be studying about all the shading parts which will be rendered. So stay tuned for it. 5. How to shade and blend: So in this class we will be talking about shading and blending. The majority problem that people face is like blending colors and adding colors to it. So as I have mentioned in my previous classes, that you have to use the 20% below of your base colors. And with the opacity round brush or with the smudge tool, you can smudge things out. Here. I'm just using my opacity brush and adding some shapes to volumes to the phases. As you know, when there is a counter, what you can say counter lines to the surface of the face. So you need to know those contours of phase. So you can exactly do where is the shade and where is the light? Here is this is the brush I use. The blending tools are here. I'm going to explain you things like here is a red sample. I'm using 20% below of it and Alpha Lock and draw it. Now you can use either smudge or opacity brush here I'm using opacity one. So as you can see, I have blended it very well. There is another method, like you can select two colors. Like here I'm selecting going down for another dark color. And there are multiple sum. I'm taking some examples like purples. So as you can see here, I'm using smudge tool with the round hard brush alpha lock it now. Yeah, that's it. Here you can see that those both colors are blended properly. And here is the third way. You can use smudge tool with a soft brush. So there are multiple ways that you can blend it with. So you need to make sure that which method you are comfortable with. So these are the few samples. In painting. There are hard edges, soft edges, as you can see, hardiness and hard edge with software, which is used quite often in my old paintings. So here is the sample, the code which has a hard edge and soft edge, as you can see, the heart age. So these are things that you need to consider in mind before painting things out. And as you can see here in my other paintings, there are hard edges and soft edges examples. So you can understand it by it. And there are more here. Here are some shapes of the face that I have drawn. There is 1234, the one 2s are hard edges and 34 are hard edge. Soft edges that we have discussed before. So here I'm just doing some touch ups on the face and nothing more. So we will be focusing right now on the next side, which has these dark shadows, these lines. You can use round brush for it and you can just erase it or follow the reference for your understanding. So we're almost done here. These edges are very good from references. And here I'm going to show you the shape of the face, the white ones and the red one below line is a shadow. So considering those things, I need to add the shoulders here, as I have told you about rendering of sphere. So that one is going to apply here using below 20 per cent and about 15 per cent for light and 20% below for shadow. So it's looking cool right now. You can use mesh tool or brush with opacity one. Give those shapes pretty much rendering like that. Now we need to add shadow to the Ice Center as I have marked in the reference. So that is what we need to do. So I'm using selection tool here and you can directly feel it or just tap on painting brush or drag-and-drop. So these are fine. So you can just add those there with a new layer salsa. So it's looking good now. So now the time is four nodes. So I'll be showing you how it looks on reference. So here it is. The white one is top facing and the red ones are facing. So these are the counters and the shape of nodes. So you need to know the counters of the shape design. So I am not going to do too much of rendering on nodes because I'll be changing those things in later on in life, changing two color modes and also it will get darker. So that's why I'm using light colors. Looking okay right now. And we'll be focusing on top of the side. So we need to define that there is a shape alignment, like there is a bottom one and top one. So you need to know those shapes and counters. It's looking pretty much good to me. So I will now merge all these layers. And this is what we got and create another layer name it highlights. Now you can add highlights to the eyes on top of nodes or lips. Set the blend mode to overlay, overlay mode, Hard light mode and color dodge is very useful ones. So you can use it to your advantage. And it will be helpful to you in many illustration like magic ones also. So this is what we got after the highlights. But there is another thing that is the shape, red one, which is dot facing straight it is from the site. So you need to give the shadows there. So I'm using below 2030 per cent and using those values and smudging dams so that it will look like there is a shape or there is a ton on the face. So the mixing is kind of tough to get hands-on the smudge tool with opacity brush. So it's looking pretty much done. Now. Yeah, the original layer, just duplicate it and set it to the color more. You can see that with black color, you can see the values also. So this is the shortcut I use almost every time to check the values. And all you can try other what you can sell layer modes. Here I'm trying things and there is a linear burn, which is very helpful as you can see here. How much difference that mode is making me smile these out. Yeah, now it's looking cool and I've already flip the canvas. That's why it's looking better for different from the previous videos. So you had that's not going to happen. Now we are almost done with it. I'm just adding some highlights and some shape design to the hares because those are the highlights you can set it to the simple more, add, add some 20% from base color to the top side, which is highlight. So yeah, it's looking cool now. So this is what we got. In next class, we will be studying about the effects that we need to create. Let's go. 6. Add effects : In this class we will be studying about lightened effects, how you can manipulate it and use it to your advantage. So here I'm just copying my final artwork and duplicating it so that I will have the artwork, previous artworks without getting diluted. So there is a one layer with the hard light and you can set that and use the Gaussian blur on it, as you can see here and manage the opacity. You got the effect. So this one is one effect. I use mostly all times as you saw in my artworks. And as you can see, there is a very difference in from original to the effect. So you can use it and you can change the background colors as well. And here I'm showing you the second effect. So duplicate the original artwork and go to the color balances, which is curves and try things out there. Gamma reduces RGB and specific are red, green, blue or reducing. It will get you to the specific colors like lowering the red will give you colors of cooler color, and lowering green will give you some vibrant warm colors like that. Here I have just created overlay layer and I'm adding some effects. So this is the most of time I use this effect. And you can go, always go back to our original artwork and change the, However you want the color by girls and by overlay layer you got this and just erase things are where the light can't it, so that it will look good. I just erasing stuff. As you can see, it's looking pretty much good right now. I will just duplicate it. As you can see, you can increase the intensity of it. But I'll fill it with another color so that I will have some extra effect. So now you need to mask that layer and draw with any brush with the black color. So it will erase things out. As you can see. It is looking dope. These effects are used my illustration, these are techniques so I have like develop throughout my experience. So you can adjust the color balance also. I'm just showing you the way you can do things like color balancing and all. I've just duplicated the, those both layers and adjusting it, transforming it by tool. And I can do like this. Yeah, It's looking good. I have to create the illusion of two, like there is a window or something like that and it is hitting the face. And so it is looking good, but there is some drawbacks like it is light gets folded, like there are shifts, it can be stretched. So you had to do like use Liquify tool to arrange things, making sure it's looks realistic type. Also you can erase things out. I'm just making it simple here and reducing the size. So I have the previous lever that I have changed things in it. I'll be duplicating this one and making sure that the gamma is top. So I have to add the lighting. So j gamma and RGB color settings. As for your preference and mask this one. And as you can see, we have to invert it so it's black and you can see the below layer. Now, choose white color and any brush that you have, air brush or round brush. Here I'm using the plain round brush with no opacity. I've just added the light in any like wherever the light shades. So yeah, like that. I've dated. So here is now we got it. And as you can see, it's looking good. You can now merge those two layers. And you got only that. And you can just merge things out at the end of the hour light. So as you can see, I'm making it smooth. So looking pretty well and duplicating the original layer here and adjusting curves, I'm going to make it cools. So yeah, I will just lower the red. So it will go in blues, like reducing the reds. And here I got it. Just mask and invert and bra with the white color. I'm using same round brush with no opacity here and smudging things out. So these are few effects that I use, mostly in my artworks. I hope you liked it. Here I have just melt all those things. So an electron, you can also add or change things if you have all the things on a separate layers. So, yeah, this is for this class about lighting effects. So we are almost done with this class. And I'll be saying a few final thoughts in the next video. So yeah. 7. Final thoughts : Congratulations on completing this course. I hope you have learned something new from these classes. Make sure to post your illustrations in the project section so that I can check on them and given necessary feedback. If any questions or suggestions are there, let me know. In discussion section.
