1. Introduction: assalum aleikum. My name is Redeem Attack in have been teaching computer graphics since the year 2000 and also founded so far all creative based companies such as Blasted Code and Exposed three D. These cars will teach you how to create illustration in photo shop very, very fast. The course is not about conventional digital painting method, which usually requires a lot of time and effort to finish. It combines both vector and raster techniques to produce sharp quality image from the start . The basic idea off the workflow is to mimic how the modern Tilly computer graphic render pass works. If you want to learn how to create high quality illustration in photo shop. But you don't want to spend days or weeks just to finish on artwork, then the scars is for you. I must warn you, though, that these cars is not for complete beginners. If you never use photo shop before I suggest you take my previous introductory course toe photo shop, as it will provide fundamental professions to understand the lessons in this advance course . At the first section off the course, we will discuss the most essential things in computer graphics. We will cover color models, documents, color mode, image channels, Hexi decimal color codes, different type of publishing image formats and then learn how to export images from Photoshopped correctly. In the next section, we will cover have to use filter, creating radiant color and also pattern. Then we will move on to vector features inside voter shop. How we can use the pen tool effectively combined simple paths to form more complex path and then some practical usage off pants inside Photo shop. In our first project, we will create a simple airplane illustration using the techniques explained before. After that, we're going to use pressure sensitive defies, such as Welcome tablet extensively. We're going to learn how to set up welcome tablet correctly so it fits our speed illustration workflow. Then we're going to set up photo shops, keyboard shortcuts and you I also to get the most out off it. We're going to learn about the brush settings and how to create custom brush and custom tool presets. All of these are needed to prepare our working environment for the final project. The final project off the scars is this character design illustration. We are going to draw this image in under two hours. Now, the real time that I took to finish this drawing is around three hours. But I was doing so while explaining a lot of techniques and concepts along the way, so you should be able to finish it in under two hours. In Charlotte, we will start from skating the ideas, heading colors, heading shadings and highlights to it and finally giving it final touches such as color bleeding, glows, back light and color correction. This is the final result off the project. The illustration workflow I'll be teaching in this course is very modular and adaptable, so you can use it with your own drawing style without any problem. So doing now and take your illustration skill to the next level C on the other side, assalum Juanico.
2. Conventions & Disclaimer: welcome to the course before moving on. There are several things I need to mention and to make clear force first about the structure off the course. I have carefully crafted the curriculum so that everything is placed sequentially. Each lessons you take in one level will become the foundation off the lessons or the next levels. Therefore, it is important that you take the cars in order, step by step, not jumping around if you take the course by jumping around, most likely you will get confused in some point because I usually will not repeat lessons, which already explained in the previous videos. The second thing I need to mention is that you need to practice for each video. Please try out the lesson yourself. At least ones. The course is not disobey theories. Most off the lessons are practical skills. So again you need to practice. If you really want this online course toe benefit you several conventions for discourse abusing PC computer. So every shortcut I mentioned in the video will be for PC users. For Mac users, mostly, you simply need to change the control keyboard shortcut, toe command, keyboard shortcut. OK, next is the document template Adobe for a shop and Adobe Illustrator has lot of presets for documents you can use RGB or C M Y. Key. You can you speak sauce or centimeters or even points for measurements, not to mention size is basically to make things less confusing down the road and so that we have the same setting to start with India's sports when I open a new file in Adobe for a sharp abusing film and video preset category and use this HDTV 10 80 p precept. Basically, it will set the documents with toe 1920 pixels and said the hate toe 10 80 p sauce. The measurement units toe pick sauce for the arbor checkbooks. Make sure it is turned off, said the resolution to screen or 72 pp I, and said the color mode toe RGB big grown toe white and finally with no color management for Adobe Illustrator, I'll be using Android 10 80 p precept, but set the orientation to landscape for those off. You who couldn't find this precept just used these values each time you open a new file, said the documents with toe 1920 pixels said the hate toe 10 80 p. Source said the color Moto RGB and the measure Man units to Big Source and lastly for raster effects said it was screen or 72 pp. I if in the future, video lessons are set up certain values such as blur values or brush with values. But the appearance that you have in your file, it's a bit different from mine. It's a big chance that you set up the document differently, so please check your documents values first. If this ever happened to you throughout the course, I'll be displaying a lot of images and videos. Some off them are not made by me, amusing them nearly as source off inspiration and as reference for all of us to study, because I think they are great artworks. Okay, if I can find the owner's name off the image, I will try to add credits for him or her on top off the image. Otherwise, are really spray the image as is if I don't specifically state that the image is made by me or has my watermark on it, it means those images belong to its respectful owners or artists. I do not claim those images or videos are made by me. Okay, let's move on to our first video lesson
3. Color models: color is one of the most important aspect in creating beautiful art and design. There are so many colors and color variations exist in the world. For centuries, we as human, have tried so hard to uncover the secrets behind colors. Why is this so important for us? Because by knowing how colors actually work, we can later capture them, store and digitize them, reproduce them or display them precisely. We need to simplify the colors to its basic components, which are called the key colors. Using the combination off this key colors, we can reproduce any color. Everyone. This is what we call the color model. So basically, color models are methods off describing collars, using a combination off key colors or using a set of parameters. There are at least two types off color model that we need to know as an artist or designer . Light based color models and big hman based color model light based color models use lights as the color producer. All devices that produce light used this color model, for example, our computer monitors, smartphone screens, television projectors, etcetera. There are two light based color models we're going to discuss in this lesson video. They are RGB and HSV. Okay, unlike the light based colors, the Pickman based color model use things or pains to produce color. Everything that is printed or painted up used This color model. The pigment based color model we're going to discuss in this video is C M y Que. Let's discuss the light based color models first and then later. The Pickman color model RGB, as I mentioned before, is the color model for lights. RGB stands for red, green and blue. Using these three key colors, we can produce any color we like. If all of the colors red, green and blue all turned on to its maximum strength, the output color will be white, and if none off the RGB colors are turned on, then the output color will be black. So basically in RGB color model, black means off or no lights at all. Let's see how we can control RGB color model in for the show. If you click on these color box for a shop will display the color because we know by default. This vertical strip is said to Hugh because the check box in here is said to Hugh. Okay, the RGB color model is located down here. If we click the rep check box in here, these strip will show the red color strength below. Here is zero, and up here is 255 so the maximum value for each channel is 255. We'll discuss about why this value is maxed out to 255 on later videos. If I click on this green tech box, the strip will display the green string value, and if you click on the blue one, the street will display. The blue collar strength and the value range for all of the channels are the same. Basically, it has zero value at the minimum level and 255 at the maximum level. If only red and green color turned on, the output color will be yellow. If green and blue are turned on and read it off, then the output color will be science. If red and blue color are turned on while the green color is turned off, then the output color will be light purple color. If the strength off each channels are uniform, the output color would be great scale colors. Other colors can be produced by controlling the strength off each channel. Okay, so that is RGB color model now, although RGB is the true color model off lights using already be Toby color is very un intuitive. If we need to select certain color, we need to do a lot off gassing and try and error process. That is why a new light based color model was introduced, called HSV HSV, which is stand for you. Separation and value is the derivative color model from RGB color model. It is like based color model also. But unlike RGB, which defied color into three main colors, it just fi use color characteristic instead to define the color output. First issue. If we select the huge check box in here, we just the father shops their fault. By the way, these strip will be spread a color wheel. It is called the Color wheel because it actually rotational value from 0 to 360 degrees, we can see that the red color up here is actually the same with Rick color. Down here, the saturation value controls how much color present as opposed to gray scale colors. If we set this toe top, the color will be at the strongest value, and we set this to the bottom. It will have no color at all or basically makes everything in grayscale spectrum. The V value is sometimes called B, which stands for brightness. So HSB and HSV are actually the same thing in the photo shop. We call it be for rightness. Another software, for example. Blender. We call it V for value. The brightness value controls How much light is being emitted from the color. If we set this all the way to the bottom, will have black color because in light color model, as we mentioned earlier, black means dark or no lights at all. If we set this all the way up, the color will be at its writers. Okay, so that is just fee and just be color model. We've discussed earlier that just be should be the default color model we used to pick color and a huge value should be set as active, so this straight will show the color wheel to select a color. First, we just the base color in the hue strip and then move on to the big square at the left side . The more we move to the right, the more saturated the color will be. We can see the saturation value is at 100%. You remove these until touching the left age will get 0% for the situation. For a vertical position, the more we set the pointer to the top, the brighter the color will be and the lower it gets, the darker the color will be, as we can see in the brightness value at the right side, The third color model is C M Y que color model, unlike the two color models with discussed earlier C M y que Speakman based color model. If you own a color printer, most likely you already familiar with C M y que. Because the in cartridges off color printer are based on his color model a long time ago, we used to think that the key colors off Higman or pains are red, blue and yellow because a lot of colors can be produced by mixing these three colors. Some art school even still teach these concepts until now, although you can achieve a lot of color variations with red, blue and yellow pains. You cannot produce all of them. Scientists already discovered that Pickman ski color are more likely to be C Am. Why K. C for science color. I am form, agenda color Why for Yellow Color and Kay? Well, K is actually stand for key color. But because Malsky colors are considered as black color in printing industry, we can safely assume that K is for black. We did black color as sigh in magenta and yellow colors. When mixed together, can only achieve brownish mud color. They can never achieve black color without a dedicated black ing. If you look at the color picker window, we can see at the right side we have another unique color model called L A. B or lab for short L. A. B is not a common color model, but it has some function in graphic design field, mostly to make the color more out. You really shouldn't use Web color to publish your file as not many software or fewer supported. But that may explain this real quick lab or L A B stands for lightness, a channel and beach. You know, the L or the lightness is identical with the brightness level we have in HSB color model. So basically it controls how bright and how dark the color will be. Okay, So what is a and B then? Well, they aren't actually abbreviation a channel controls How green First us How red the color with the so the a channel is actually a spectrum of green color to red color. At the center, we have gray color. It ranges from positive to negative value where the great cholera is at zero value. Okay, The B channel is just like the a channel. But the color spectrum is from yellow to blue color. And just like the A channel, the zero value will also produce gray color. Okay, so those are the color models exists in photo shop and also in Adobe Illustrator. But for Adobe Illustrator, specifically, you won't find a lab color model in there, So the lab color model is only supported in a door before the show. Okay. In the next video, we will discuss how we can change the doc humans color mode and converting it from one to another.
4. Documents color mode: in this video, we're going to discuss how we can change the documents color mode and converting it from one to another. This video is meant Toby watch after he watched the previous video, which is about color models. So if you haven't watch it, please watch that feed your force when we pick color you see in the color picker window We can use various color models in here to select any color that we won. But you need to understand it. It doesn't mean that our document will be converted to that color motto. This is just a way to select colors inside Photoshopped. If we go to Channel panel in here, we can see that the channels are still in RGB mode, not cm wakey or lab. Another way to check our document color mode is quickly by looking at this file type up here which displayed the documents name we can see in here RGB and number eight, the number eight indicates that we are in a bit per channel, which is the default with per channel in computer graphic. More about this later. Inshallah, we can change from one color mode to another color by going to the image menu to US mode. We can see a photo shop support a lot of color modes, and down here we can see the amount off beat per channel. You might be wondering which color mode should I use them. The answer is, you generally want to use RGB mode when working with Father Shop, and then later you can switch or comfort to see em Waikiki mode if you need to transfer your file to the printing shop. Even so, if you transfer Rdp file to the printing shop, they usually can handle the conversion themselves. Just remember to do a color proofing step before printing them massively. Okay, Photo shop was designed for RGB color mode first in mine, so a lot of features in photo shop can only be accessed. If you are in RGB, an eight bit, four channel mode, just give an example if you are in RGB mode. If we go to the filter menu, all of these filters can be accessed. None off them are disabled. But notice if I change this to lab color mode, for example. Nor does the channel has changed to lighten us Channel A and general be when I goto filter menu. The filter gallery is disabled. We can see this great out packs in the getting that we cannot use it. And all of these filters are disabled, too. The three d feel terrorists are all dead. Some of the render filters are also dead. Same thing happens also, if you ucm Waikiki color mode or other color modes. Besides RGB, some of the filters will not be available for you. So let's change the color mode back to already. Be for now. Now there is something unique about CM like a color mode, and that is when you try to confer to same work, a color mode. You get this pop up message about color profile. So what is actually colored a profile to make things simple. Color Profile is a look up table which define which RGB color value will be equals toe, which CM work a color value. It is a set of standard toe conferred color between RGB and shame. Y que you might be wondering, Is there any unified standard for this conversion? Well, I wish is that simple? But no, there is no unified standard for color profile companies, even devices have their own color profile. This is due to our G B and C M Y que are very different in each other. RGB colors live inside a display that produced light. Our monitor or TV or smartphone screens produce lights. On the other hand, same working colorists live in non light emitting mediums such as paper, fabric, glassy, etcetera. So there are so many possibilities off converting between the tool. You can just imagine looking at the magazine inside your house at night. First, us reading it outside at broad daylight with dramatic lighting from the sun. The environment will determine the collars on that medium when you measure them, so you will see how things get complicated, usually when I need to confer too same Y K. I just used the default color profile provided by photo shop. But if you know exactly what color profile your target device will be, or perhaps the printing company gives you the information about the color profile, you can confer toe that exact color profile by going to the edit menu. Then click confer toe profile and choose, for example, workings. M. Y que us were coated in here. Now our document is in same wake, a color mode using a specific color profile that we just before, as we can see the channels panel in here, they are no longer RGB channels but in CM working channels. Also, as I mentioned earlier, if we go toe filter menu some off the filters become unavailable. Often when you receive an image file from other people, such as your Koreans or from the Internet, you may find that the image behave strangely inside Photoshopped, for example, I have this dummy file when I try to pick color in color box in here, just read color. For example. When I brush like these noticed the color always converted to grace color. Well, this is because this file is in grayscale mode. So to bring back the default behavior, we need to confirm the documents color mode toe RGB To do that goto image menu mode and choose RGB color mode. Now we can pick color again, for example, red color in here and create broad brush strokes like this. Okay, guys, to recap this lesson, you always want to work in RGB color mode because you will get access to all of the photos show functionalities. You may need to convert a semi regulator if you need to send the file to printing shops. And when you open a file and then Photoshopped behave strangely when dealing with collars or filters, you may need to convert the file toe RGB mode.
5. Image channels: as you mentioned earlier. Raster image is actually just agreed off small squares called pixel Each pixel will have to store at least three information. How much strength is for the red color? How much is for the green color? And finally, how much is for the blue color? Different level off red, green and blue colors will determine the color off the pixel. These three types off information for each existing pixel are called channels. Basically, channel is just a block off data inside the pixel toe Hold the color component. So we have reginal, green channel and boots. You know, if we open a file, I have a dummy filing here. You can open any image file. You have a song. SPDC, RGB mode. We can see the RGB tax up here if we go to the channel panel. We have four channels in here RGB red, green and blue. Now this image actually only contains three channels. This RGB up here is the final mixed color output from these three channels down here. Okay. If I click on the Red Channel, for example, we can see now the other channels are hidden. The colors we look like a gray scale colors. This is because the Red Channel only determined one value, and that will be the strength off the red color in the image. What we perceived as why colors in here are actually the maximum strength off the red color component off the image black color and his channel showing the Lobos strength off the red color component. The concept is the same with the other channels. So, for example, if we click on the Green Channel, white color in here means that at the couldn't pick sauce, the green color component is at the maximum value, and a black color means that the green color component is at the lowest strength. Same concept goes with the Blue Channel. Okay, you'll get the idea. What's so great about this Channel panel is that we can actually create a selection from each off this channel strength. Simply hold control and click on any off. This time, Neil and we have a selection. We can also click this button down here that say's load channel a selection. But I find using the control key modifier is a lot quicker. Okay, do I thought the color the more opaque the selection will be and the black of the color, the more transparent selection will be. I found this method very useful, especially when we need to select colors from black and white or gray scale images. For example, I have this grayscale color image to create a selection from this image. Simply go to the channel panel, hold control and then just click on the channel. Tom Nail in here for the shop will create this election based on the strength off the white color in that channel. Pure black color will be considered no selection at all if you need the selection but the other way around or the in first off it. We can use in Fort Selection Command to do that by pressing shift control I our go to select menu and induced in force in here. Besides red, green and blue channels, we can have offer channels in our image offer to know this additional channel that it's used for controlling transparency, often image. You must be aware, though, that not all image file format support off a channel. We're going to talk about this file formats in the next video, but just for example, if we save our file as a PNG file, BNG file support off a channel transparency. So each big so in that file may have for channels. Three channels contain the RGB value, and one additional channel called the Alpha Channel, contains the transparency value. Okay, in Photoshopped Dole, the offer channels are channels in general is a bit off loose term for the shop lets you create lot off offer channels in a single PSD file. I'm not really sure the maximum number off channels you can create in photo shop. Last time I check it was 56 channels, but the number may increase in each affair should updates, and by the time you watch the video generally you'll never need to create 56 channels, though in for the shop, we can name the offer channels to any, namely one. Let's see how we can do this. Make sure we are in the channel panel. Click the Create New Channel button down here and we have on offer Channel click again, and we have another offer channel offer one off to. You'll get the idea now to rename the channel. We can double click on the name of it and change this to any memory Like, for example, my channel. You might be wondering by now why do I need these channels for well in a four to show channels are useful to store selection. We learned about extracting selection from general before, right? Well, we can also self selection as channel. For example, let me create a simple rectangular selection like these to start the selection as a new channel. We can click this button on here that stays safe Selection as general now, as you can see, we just store the selection as common image channel to remove a channel that you don't need . You can click on the channel, then click on this trash button down here. Okay, Now we're going to discuss the needy, greedy, off image file formats, and that will be the number off bits in each channel. If we have a standard image file opened, we can see the text number eight out here. And also, if we go toe image menu mode, we can see eight beats per channel in here. This number means that for each channel that we have in the image, we require eight beats memory slot, so we have eight slots for red, eight slots for green and eight slots for Blue. If we have offer channel, then we have another eight slots for it. No computer actually only knows binary numbers, which are zero and one, so these eight slots will be filled in with a bunch off zero and one numbers later, for example, we're going to have something like this. These are just random digit numbers just to give you an example. What we can count with the set up is that if we have eight probable space and two probable values, which are zero and one, how much is the total configurations that we can get from it? Well, that will be to power by eight equals toe 256 variations. So with eight beats per channel, each general can have 1 to 256 value. But if we start from zero instead of one, we can have 0 to 255 values for each channel. Because off this, if we open color picker window in photo show, our or G or be value in here can only have maximum value to 255 because they start from zero. Also, if you have offer channel, the level of transparency can spread from zero as the lowest value, which means fully transparent to 255 which means fully opaque. So for standard RGB file, each pixel will have eight plus eight plus eight bits equals two total off 24 bits. But if we have offer channel in that image, each pixel will have additional eight bits information, so the total will be 32 bits. I hope this information helpful, although it seems not important at the moment. But trust me by knowing this will help you understand file settings in other graphic applications, which in many cases has a unique ways offsetting for parameters such as they ask you whether to save as 24 bits or 32 bits or safe to RGB plus offer etcetera. By now, you already understand it. 24 bits. Image file equals two standard RGB file with Northern's Parent C and 32 bits. Image file equals toe stand up rgb file. But with all for transparency,
6. Hexadecimal color value: When working with colors, you will often see people share. Cholera is using this hex additional codes, especially if you're doing where design. Most likely, you already used these hexi decimal codes to define colors in HTM l. R In CSS coats. If we open for shops color picker, we can see the Koran color in hexi decimal value. Down here it is usually start with harsh mark or sharp symbol like this. In this video, we're going to discuss the under laying structure off this hexi decimal color codes so later you can use them confidently and be able to change the color just by tweaking the numbers. Great explanation. First, these Hexi decimal codes can be divided into three groups, each with double digits. So the 1st 2 digits are actually for red color. The 2nd 2 digits are for green color. And lastly, the third to reach its are for the blue color value. Okay, you might be wondering by now how come we have these numbers and letters or make stuff like this? Remember that in standard RGB eight beats per channel images, each channel will have a digit, and in each digit we can have value off zero or one. Now, if we divide these eight bits into left wing and right wing, we have four digits at laugh and four regents at right Because you have for probable spaces and each with two possible failures, we can calculate the maximum number off variations we can have and that will be toe power by four equals toe 16 variations each. Okay, so each wing can have value between 1 to 16. But if we start from zero, we get 0 to 15 values. The idea here is how can we write each off this wing with only one digit? Not for digits like this. As when we are using binaries or not using two digits like this as when we are using this Imo. The answer is by writing the value in Hexi Decimal. So what is actually Hexi Decimal? Well, we all know about decimal, right? We come from one toe, three up until nine. Then after we reach, then we actually doing a loop. Here we are back in zero, then 11 12 13 etcetera, basically using decimal for each 10th value. We are looking the counting order this behavior mostly because we as human. Half 10 fingers. Now, just imagine here for a second. Let's say you encounter on alien race that has 16 fingers instead off. Then how do you think they will call numbers using their Seymour system? Not likely. Big tins. They will use Hexi Decimal System. Hexi Decimal System Loop Accounting order. Not when it reached the amount off 10 but when it reached 16. Now, if we borrow this system, we can use only one digit to refer to the value off each off this wing. But wait. We still have a problem here. We don't have number symbols greater than nine. How can we symbolise number 10 11 12 until 15 In Hexi Decimal. Been well. We can hack it. We can use letters instead. So as decimal ghost like this. 1234 until we reach nine. After that, we have 10 11 and so on. In Hexi Decimal, we have 123 Up until nine. We still have the same symbols here. But when we reached 10 we used later a then B for 11. And so on until half for 15. When we reach 16 then we have 10. So then in Hexi decimal value is equal to the amount off 16 in decimal values. Okay, so by using the system at one digit space, we can have minimum value off zero, which is equal with the amount off zero also in decimal and the maximum value off half, which is equal with the amount off 15 in Decima. So now, with only six lead, it's we can define any RGB colors that we like Sometimes. You will also encounter three digits color value or also known as Web safe colors. Please don't be confused with these codes as basically they are double values. So, for example, if we have 37 A like these, the real value for this is actually 3377 a double three double Stephan and Double A in photo shop. We can turn on this option in here so we can see only the Web safe colors, as we can see in here. Any area we pick in the color picker, we always result. Double values in the Hexi decimal coats don't here now. Web safe color is legacy off the old days standard when computers still have limited colors and also limited bandwidth Nowadays, they're really not important at all. Sufferer hints when walking with Hexi Decimal Values when all of the value zero either six digits like 000000 Aurelius 000 Using Web self color format both off this numbers mean black as an RGB color model. No light means black if we have all of the value said toe half such as F f f r f f f f f f . This means that the color is white. Why this is strongest color as all of the RGB channels are settled, its maximum values next. We also can tell if the color is gray scale, and that is when each number off R G and B values are identical. So, for example, 12th 12th 12th like these or for E for E for E or C C. C. All of the's are grayscale color values
7. Publishing file formats: after finished working on your image or your illustration in for the shop, you might want to publish the file toe, another format that can be used by other software outside for the shop. Previously, you've talked about image files and briefly learn how to export images from for the shop. In this video, we're going to explore much deeper on some off the common file formats exists in the world . There are at least four file formats commonly used. No days. They are P and G J pic Giff and def. There are other common file formats, such as E X. Our role actually Air I etcetera. These images are mainly used for high range images suitable to store real world lighting condition. They have more than eight beats per channel, so they are able to store more lighting information. They are great to say, photographs and lighting sources for three D renderings. In this video, we will not discuss these high range images and just focus on common eight beats per channel images. Okay, so first, let's talk about the n G, the energy or some people prefer to call it Ping files actually stands for portable network Raffi, But understanding the abbreviation is not that important. We're going to focus on what and when. We use a certain file format, so it would be more practical and useful for us. PNG format is the most modern file formats compared to the other file formats we will cover in this lesson, and it actually has a lot of variations. There are PNG formats that can store more than eight bits personal, and that is also on eight beats. PNG FILE Please be aware that the Ed BSP and your file is not the same with the ordinary PNG file. With eight bits per channel, the ordinary PMD file has at least three channels R, G and B, each with eight bits information. So the total is 24 bits. The eight bits PNG file contains only eight bits. Color information, asshole, making it more like GF images more about Jeff images Later. Now we're going to focus on standard PNG file, which has eight beats per channel. The energy also support our first you know, so each pixels can have transparency. Level ranging from 0 to 255. If you sing, offer channel each pixels in the PMD file will contain 32 bits off data that will be eight bits for red, eight bits for green and eight bits for blue. And finally, eight beats for the Alfa or Transparency. PMD file format has lossless compression meaning, although it is compressed by default. The color information start in PNG file is preserved, so PMD file is actually a good format to back up your photos or images. The don't site off PNG is that it does not support any mission, and it does not support layers. The Andy is commonly used in a Web as all Web browsers in the world support PNG file. I have never heard any modern browsers that does not support PNG file. So the big question is, when should we use PNG file format? We use PNG file format if we need transparency. That is the biggest reason we want to export to pian deformity. The second reason will be to preserve the original color information. If you want to save the image for back our purpose or to transfer the image to our co workers, we should use PNG file format. For example, if you're working in pretty application, and you need to render a scene. You mostly want to compose the renderings in image editor, such as photo shop or video editor, such as after effects. Then you definitely want to start a renderings toe. PNG file formats. Next is the jetpack file format JP Use. RGB Channel also disliked PNG, so each pixel INGE epic file will have red, green and blue color information. But unlike PNG, J. Peg does not support transparency as it cannot contain off our channel. Also, J pic has lossy compression, meaning it will degrade the color information inside it. When seven to J pic file format, we can control how much the compression will be used. The higher the compression, the smaller the fire size. But the more color information will be lost, and the more you will see JP artifacts, which are annoying blocks off colors in your images. Jeff PIC file format does not support any mission nor layers for a browser compatibility. We can safely say that all Web browsers in the world support tepic file. Okay, so on to the big question when should be used to pay for format, Jay Back is the best file format. If you want to publish complex imagery to the Web, what I mean about complex imagery are images that have many color variations inside them, such as photographs, our colorful illustration or to the renderings. It's compression nature. We'll make the file size small, and it's lossy. Nature will provide us with some level of protection is the image that we published on the Web. It's not the original image, which contain the original color information. Instead, it only has degraded version off the original file. Do you file format? Probably the most unique file format compared to the others. Instead, off RGB channel G format used color storing system using polyp. Basically, it released all of the colors that will be used inside a table. Then it's big sauce in the image will reforms the color to that color table. Using this method, Defile can have extremely small file size with the don't side off the fire is that the color table and only contained 256 color slots. Jeff is an eight Beats file format, not eight beats per channel like J pick, but eight beats as a whole. It means gift is not the best file format to store complex imagery. It is okay to use it for logo or cartoon images that consist off small amount off colors. In term, off the inspire INSEE DEA file format can have key cholera transparency. The difference with offer transparency is that key color transparency can only contain on our off transparency option. So unlike alpha transparency, which can have 0 to 255 level off transparency for each pixel, the big sauce in gear file format can only have two values. Transparent are non transparent. So if you use transparency with dear file format, expect to see jagged or pixellated image. Border one advantage is off. Give file format is animation. This is because do you file format? Has the ability to store multiple images in one file with the majors are stored sequentially? As for animation, not staking as layers like in for the shop? And finally, for where browser support always browsers that I know off support, dear files. Okay, so eventually we used to you far for men. My answer to this will be on Lee if you need animation feature other than the need for animation, you should use PNG or JPEG file. Instead, you might be wondering, but dear files can be extremely small size. Why not use them for known complex imagery? My answer to these is to use the N G eight beats instead. This is because for the shop has an export feature that can generate eight bits BNG automatically, which we're going to discuss later after this video. The last file format we're going to discuss in this video is stiff. Dear File format has so many features, an almost comparable with native PSD file format. For example, it supports image layers and can use both RGB and C M y que color model. Because off this Theophile format is commonly used in printing industry, it also support off transparency, and it has option for different compression algorithms. The downside off the if East, the file size it is generally large, so it can be a problem and you need to exchange the data online. Another downside off the file format is the Web browser support. Until this video is being produced on Lee Suffering browser able to display thief If images will not be displayed on Firefox nor Google Chrome Web browsers. So if you want to publish images to the Web, you should use PNG, JP or defiles instead, based on the requirements explained before you should never use stiff for were publishing. So when shall be used tiff images? The best answer for this will be when you need to send your images toe printing companies. Okay, so those are the image file formats commonly used nowadays and some quick explanation off when we need to use them in the next video, we're going to learn how to export the images from for the shop.
8. Exporting: in this video, we're going to learn how to export or save our image. File toe other publishing file formats. Generally, when you need to save the file toe PNG, J P or G file formats, you can use the export command. And if you need to save the file as a Theophile, you need to access the safe esque man. This is normal as the format able to store most off the information that native PST file support such as layer and C M y que color mode. So let's see the settings for each method. If you have an image that you want to publish to the Web and you need that image to contend transparency, then PNG is your best choice. In his example, I have an image off a three in this layer that I want to save to a PNG file format. But as we can see in here, the canvas is very big, and if I export like these s ease, it will have so much empty areas that we don't need. So before we export this image, we need to trim it first, taking out all the unnecessary empty area. So the final PNG image will be more optimum now to trim the image. We can do this in several ways. First method is you see the dream Command. To do this, we need to turn off the layers that we don't need to see in the final output. The big room layer we have in here is not transparent. It is actually has quite color feel and in this case, we don't need it. We wanted three image background to be transparent. So hide this layer first, then goto image menu. Then just dream the team guy look panel will appear in here. We can dream based on transparency or based on pixel color. Obviously we have transparent areas that we want to remove, So this option is already correct. Don't here we can specify on which cites the dream will be executed. We want to train from all of the sites top bottom, left and right. The default options in here is already correct. Click the OK button and now, as we can see, the canvas size has changed to the optimum size off the three image. After we have something like this, we can export the file by going to the farming you export and choose export as in here the export asked Window will open and in his window we can see we have some options to export the image. The first thing we're going to discuss is thes option up here. This is where we can pick the target file format that we want to use if we quickly spooled on lease. We have PNG J pic Giff and as Fiji formats. Now SVG is actually a vector graphic format, not roster graphic. So it's a small chance you need to export SVG from Photoshopped because you should really use Adobe Illustrator for it. But later we will discuss a vector graphic in the next section off the course. For now, let's focus on the raster Images force. It was like PNG You have this option to save the file toe PNG eight bit format when possible, which is a very small sized file format. This is like the file format. Okay, Now notice when I change these two j pick for man, The transparency off the image is gone, as Jay Picked does not support transparency. But we're provided with this quality slider that we can play around. If we change some settings in this window, such as the file former or the image size in here we can see for a shop will give us feedback off how large the output file size will be in here. For example, if I change the quality settings in here so very low quality, the output file size will become smaller also, as we can see in here. Okay, forgive and SPG, we don't have any settings up here that we can control. This area can be used to determine the output image size. We can click and type in a value in here, or we can hover over the thanks in here and then just drag to change the value. The resemble option in here determine the algorithm for scaling the image. Are we live these to it's default as Photoshopped will determine. For us, we just the best algorithm for resembling the image known here is for the can for size. Unlike image size, which will actually scale, the image can first size. We leave the image scale as it is, but it will crop the image our create more space around the image. If we make it bigger. So that is the difference between these two. The Meta data section is where we can inject data into our image file output. If we click these check box, the image will contain the copyright and a contact in four. But you might be wondering, where can we put the information? There are no input field anywhere to be found in this window. Well, this is because it is located in a file in for section that may cancel this window. Force Goto farm a new and down here you will see file in for click on it. And as you can see, we can put a lot of information in here. The copyright information can be found in here and for the contact in four. You can goto i PTC category in here, and we can just feel in all of these tax fields. Let's go back to the export as we know again. Okay, don't. Here you will see comfort us RGB option. If you are publishing to the Web, you always want to let this option turned on as you mentioned earlier about color profile. We learned before that there are many color profile for c m y que Well, rgb is no exception. There are many standards for RGB call of space, but fortunately for us, almost always Browsers in the world used the same RGB profile which is called S RGB. We can even safely say that as RGB is the standard off all things that produce RGB color nowadays. So again, basically you really don't want to turn off this option. Okay? If you ever be sign up Aikens before, for example, for android app or for IOS app, you know that you need to create multiple sizes off the same I can design as requested by the platform. These different sizes off Aiken later will be used to display your app in different devices with different screen a solution before creating multiple sizes off. Your design is tedious now in for the shop. You can automate the process by using these scale all section up here. For example, if I need to export the half size version off my three image in here, I just clicked the plus button in here and now we have another skilled version available. We can change the scale value in here if you like. We can click the plus button again if you need more variation and then choose the scale size again in here. Later, when photo shops after file, it will automatically at SAA fix to our image for its name now, depending on your needs, you can also change the suffix name toe, any name you want. OK Below. Here is the art board we've discussed about our board before, so I won't go too much detail about it. Basically, if we have multiple art boards, they will be displayed in this list so we can review them before exporting. Because BND file format is the latest image format inventor and it was designed to replace and to improve the features off other publishing for formats. BND becoming more and more popular No days that it becomes the standard for most digital publishing purposes. Adobe realized this and therefore provide a quick access to publish our layer or group layer to PNG directly. To access this direct PND export, you can simply right click on the layer and in Jews quick export as BNG in here. If we do this for the shop will dramatically asked for a file's name, so it is that simple? Let me safely store file. Let's name it three underscore 001 dot PNG. Nor does that photo shop just dreamed the image in the layer automatically and save it in the same image size as the original without any scaling. Now you might like that Photoshopped automatically trained the image for us. But what if we still want to control other staff such as meta data, multiple scale output, or even if our format Can we do that? Yes, we can. We can rightly, again on the layer. But this time, choose export s Now, as we can see for the shop did the dream for us, which is great, but we still have all of the options in the export window, as we discussed earlier.
9. Filter: in for a show. There is a menu up here called Filter Oh, filter. In Photoshopped term is basically an image processing function that you can apply to an image. Applying a filter toe on image will alter or change the pixels inside that image. If you click on the filter menu up here and go down, as you can see for a show, provide us with a lot of filters out off the box. If you insult third party plug ins, you get even more filters in this menu. Now to discuss each filters in the filter menu, We require too much time and effort, and most likely you'll get bored and fall to sleep. So in this video, we're going to discuss on Lee the Sen shows, and that will be only suffer all filters that most likely you'll be using a lot when creating illustration in photo shop. From this basic impulse, I am hoping that you can explore the rest of the filters yourself. The first fielder family we're going to discuss are the blur filters. There are a lot off blurry filters in voter shop. We will call for only three off them, the Argo ocean blur, filter, radio blur, filter and motion blur filter. First, the Go Schindler Go Schindler is the most common blurring technique in computer graphic. The name Go Shin is actually refer Toa Carl Fredrik Ghosts, a mathematician who invented the function Tobler On image. Simply go to the filter menu, blur and choose Go Schindler by adjusting the radius in here, we can set how much or how strong the blurring will happen to the image. If you like what you see, click OK to apply or if you change your mind, click and so you can sort a blur filter. Now, if we have a selection, any filter we apply will be applied to the pixels inside that selection. Reagent on Lee the pink sauce outside the selection Ragen will not get affected again. This is through to all Fielder in photo shop, not dissed ago. Shin Blur Filter. Next, we're going to discuss the radio Blur filter. The radio blur filter will blow the image, but using circular motion to apply it just like before, we can go toe, filter, menu blur and choose this radio blur. We can set the amount value in here to control the strength off the blur in here, we can see that for a sharper if I two different methods spin well, you're spinning motion. So the motion lines are revolving at the center point and we have zoom method, which will use zooming motion so the motion lines are emitted from the center outward. We have three levels off quality in here. Draft quality is not that good, but for the shop will process it really fast. The best quality setting will give the best result, but will require more time for photo shopped to process it. Most likely, you always want these to be at the best quality setting. Okay, the next blur filter is the motion blur filter. As the name suggests, it is used to create fake motion blur toe our image. Why you call it fake. Well, generally speaking, motion blur is a phenomenon happens in real world cameras when the object that we should are moving fast while we said the camera's shutter speed toe a slow value toe, apply it. We can go to filter, menu blur and just motion blur in here. As we can see, we can specify the direction off it using this angle value, and we can specify the amount off blurriness using this distance value in here. This filter is useful to create speed lines or to convey fast motion to our illustration or photos. The opposite off the blur filters are the sharp infielders, while blur filters will smooth out images and making some off the details in the image gone sharp, one filters will actually bring back the details off the image but also introduced or increase a certain level off noise in our image. There are two sharpened filters were going toe cover in this video, and that would be sharpen. And on sharp. Mosque sharpen is perhaps one of the most basic filter you can find in for show, as it doesn't have any parameters that you can tweak. You simply open an image or select a portion off the image using selection, then go to filter menu, sharpen, sharpen. And that's pretty much it. Your image. We look more sharp than before. If you want more, then you need to apply it again multiple times until you like. What you see on Sharp Mosque is a more advanced sharpening filter that has three parameters that we can tweak. There were unsure mosque. This actually came from the underlying process that goes behind the scene when this filter is applied. The UN sharp part off the name derives from the fact that the technique used a blurred or on sharp negative image to create a mask off the original image. The UN sharp mosque is then combined with the positive or original image, creating an image that it's less blurry than the original. To use the honor shop mosque filter, we can go toe, filter, sharpen and juice on Sharp Mosque. We can see three parameters in here that we can control the amount value controls. How strong the filter will be applied to the image. The radius determines the area that will be sharpened. Lo radius means only the pink sauce right next to the age will be sharp. Print Hi radius means a wider area will be sharpened, setting the radios to hire. We'll give you weird outlines or halos around your age is threshold determines how much contrast there needs to be between colors. For them, Toby sharpened. Ah, higher threshold means higher contrast area will be sharpened, but low contrast areas will not. There are no magic numbers for all of these settings. Every image will have different needs, so you need to tweak this around to find what you are looking for. The next fielder we're going toe coffer in this video is the ad annoys Fielder. I used this fielder a lot toe a texture toe on image. For example, when making a fabric texture, old paper or rough stones, etcetera, toe access it. We can go toe filter, menu noise and at noise. The amount of value in here were determined house thrown. The noise will be the distribution of value will use either uniformed function. Otago Shin function generally are found that Goche and distribution method is more natural looking than the unit for method. But really it depends on your need. The monochromatic option Don't hear determine whether we want to add color dots in the noise result or not. If this is turned on, the resulting image will have no additional color dots. If this is off, the noise fielder will produce colored dots. You see these color doors if the noise amount is high enough and you zoom into the image up close personally I like to turn on this option all the time unless I have specific needs for colored dots in the image. Next is the vendor clouds filter. This is also one of my favorite filter for creating picture images. This filter will generate random smoke like image useful to create nature looking random patterns such as smokes, clouds, water ripples, marble patterns, stone textures. As Petra, Your imagination is the limit. What makes these filter different from the other filters is that it actually does not alter your image big sauce with just generating new image and place it on top off your image or your selection. Now this filter were used active, foreground and background color to generate the pattern. So let's speak, for example, blue color for the foreground color and green color for the background color. Now go to filter menu friend er clouds. Now we get this nice smoke pattern. I think this is suitable for poisonous gas design theme. The last filter we're going to discuss in this video is not actually a filter, but more likely a collection off filters all at a single user interface. And that will be the filter gallery to access it. You can goto filter menu and just this filter gallery in here in the left side. We can see the preview off how the resulting image we look like in the second column area we can access different filters that we can use each off this filter are actually available in a filter menu. That is why this filter is called Filter Gallery, because who actually accessing a lot of filters at once? We can see that not all filters inside photo shop can be accessed from this filter gallery we know, but still, it does help speed things up. If you need to try out different filters with this window much faster than having to try each filter one by one from the field remain you at the right column area. You'll get the parameters off the current selected filter. So, for example, clicking on the pain Dobbs in here, you get you the parameters of the pain tops filter in here. Well, if you click on the poster ages in here, you get the parameters for the possible ages in this area, I'm sure you'll get the idea here. I recommend you to try the rest of the filters inside photo shop yourself, Just experiment with them. You can try combining them in chain or sequentially and see what kind off cool artwork you can create.
10. Gradient color: Grady int is basically a transition off colors because it is a transition for a Grady in Toby fishable, we need at least two different colors. If we only have one color are identical colors than the result. We look like an ordinary solid color. We can use Grady ins for a lot of things, for example, to create a sky color adding speculator auto metallic effects, creating simple shading and other purposes. In here we have to type of radiance. Elaine, your Grady in on a radio. Grady in both off. These Grady INTs are actually using the same colors yellow to green. But each of the grading distributions are different. Okay, so how can we create this radiant? Then we can create Grady int by using this tool called the Grady Int Tool Notice up here in the option panel, we can click the spooled on lease toe, open the grading presets. We can choose any preset in here, for example, this one. Then we can pick the distribution type in here. The left one is Delaney, a distribution which will distribute the Grady in in a straight line. Just click drag like this in the canvas to create the Grady Int Max. This one is radio. If he quit direct like this, the location where we first click our mouth will be the center off the Grady int. On the position where we release the mouse will be the outer area off the radio. Grady in this is the conical type or known as angle Grady in info to show this is mirrored or reflected Grady in and the last one is diamond type. We can create a custom, Grady in by clicking on this box up here, not the carrot button, but this big box in here. This will open up the grading editor window. We can use any presets in here or the starting point, But before we move on, I like to point out to you Nick presets, which generally you'll be using a lot in the future. They are this one and this one. So what's so unique about them? They are unique because the colors in these presets are dynamic. It will change according to the active foreground and background color. This one will create a Grady in from active foreground color toe active, begged on color, and this one will create a Grady int from foreground color with 100% capacity to four grown color. Also, but at zero opacity what we can solve this window force. Let's big purple color for the foreground color. Okay, and then let's speak green color for the background color or any color that you like, as long as it is different from the foreground color. Okay, now, if we go back to the grading editor, we can see these presets. Colors have changed. This note has the purple color we specified before in here, and this note or color stop used these green color we picked before in a bigger on color box. Let's see how we can create custom Grady in color. Now first parameter. Is this Grady in type option in here. This will determine whether it is a solid or noise type. The name might confuse you, but basically solid use fixed Grady in colors that we can control using the color stops down here, while noise will generate random colors typically useful for adding speed lines or abstract big grown, so in noise type, we cannot select an altar, each color stop directly, only the general parameter off it let's discuss the noise type first. The roughness will determine how sharp each color will show up. If the value is low, the colors will be blended or blurred. If we set this failure high, we can have more defined colors in a Grady in strip Max, the color models don't hear provide a way to control the amount off colors inside the noise . Grady in here, for example, we turned this green slider down. There will be less green color in the Grady in this red slider to make the red color less or more and this one to control the blue color strength. I'm sure you will get the idea now. Besides RGB, we can also use HSB model and lab color model to control the awful color you've said, though it just be. For example, we can say that you in here control the situation in here and the brightness in here. If using lab color model, we can control the level or the brightness here that this one control how magenta or green the color will be. These one controls how blue against how yellow it is. If you think the random colors produce in ST is to situate er, we can click this button to lower the situation, and we can add random transparency into the mix. Using these check box in here. Let me on check all of the's option and change this back to our TV. The last button in here is used to produce new randomize color based on the settings we have in the color models. If we like what we see in the color straight, we can click the OK button on quick direct like this or the canvas to create the Grady in. Oh yes, If you want to create straight Lanier Grady in, we can use the shift modifier key to death in the shift key pressed, the Grady in orientation will be constrained toe vertical, diagonal or horizontal. As we can see, we can create cool speed lines are abstract, big grown with the noise Grady Int easily. The next Grady in type we're going to cover is the solid radiant. This is the primary Grady in type you'll be using when working with for the shop ingredients trip. We can see notes up here and don't here. These notes are actually called stops in for a show. The top ones are opacity. Stops So for each Off the stop, we can define opacity value. The bottom ones are color stops at each. Off this color stop. We can define color to change the color. First we need to select the node. You can see the active note has this black triangle while the other notes have white triangle toe pick a color. We can click this box down here. This will opens up the color picker so we can pick the color that we want for this current color Stop. Okay, To change the opacity. The same concept applies simply is like the opacity. Stop! You want to control? We can see the Black Triangle. Don't hear indicating that this is the note we are controlling now. Then select a new capacity valued on here. If we need to add more notes, we can click anywhere up here to create additional opacity. Stop And we can click anywhere down here Toe create color. Stop! We can wreck this around to any location we like. Beside the main notes, we can also control the midpoint notes which is this small diamond shape notes. This will affect the color distribution in a Grady in strip. If we want to remove a note, we can rag it like this out from the street, and that note will be removed. The less a thing I want to mention is the smoothness value up here. These will determine where that the colors will be spread out or more clumped together around the color stops. Mostly, we live this setting to 100% so the color distribution spread more evenly.
11. Pattern: in this video lesson we're going to discuss on how we can create Perdon inside photo shop, although in photo shop there is no advance pattern creation tool such as that we can find an illustrator we can still use in create pattern nicely inside this program in for a shop . It is very easy to define any image as pattern to show you how it is done. Let's say we have this photo image. Create a selection to define the border off the pattern, then go to edit menu defined pattern. Name your pattern with something meaningful type in flower. A. Just for example, Then he the okay button. Now our floral image is saved a spread on preset inside Photoshopped. It will be available the next time we need to feel layer or selection area or ship lier with pattern. So it is that simple. To use pattern, we can feel a whole layer or isolation with a pattern. In later videos, we will learn how to use it on ship players. Let's focus on layer first, create a new empty layer. Make sure there is no selection at all. You can press control de to clear out the selection. Now go to edit menu and then choose Feel You can also use shift at five for shortcut in a pulled on least make sure pattern is like that. If we have bad and selected up here in this area, we can access the pattern presets, usually newly created pattern will be placed down at the bottom. So toe access our floral pattern. We need to scroll all the way down. This is our pattern selected. Then hit the okay button. As we can see, the layer are now filled with the floral pattern we have created before. Let me see, like all of these, by pressing control a and then hit the delete key to clear them all. Okay, Now, if we create a selection like these, for example, for a shift, have five and choose the pattern we have before again noticed the pattern will only feel the selection area. If you look our pattern currently, we can see that this area is empty. This area is actually the area where the borders are in our original image. So it will be very hard to draw this area directly as they are cropped or split into different areas. To overcome these, we can use a special fielder called Offset West. You see right away how we can do this. Make sure we are in our original bigger on layer. Create a selection with the rectangular marquee tool. I always recommend to your square sizes for pattern just to make things easier later. So when drawing the selection, make sure you use the shift key modifier. This way, the with and hate will have the same value. Move this or the image is more centered. Next, we need to crop the image. Now, if we have selection like this, clicking on the crop tool will actually make the crop. Ragen, follow the selection. Now turn on this option. Up here, the lead cropped picks us, and we can click this commit button up here. Or did you see the enter button toe crop? The image. Okay, before we move on, let's open the image size window by going to the image menu than image size in here. We need to memorize this number as we're going to use it later to refine the offset size. Okay, now goto, filter menu juice. Other offset. Now make sure the undefined areas is set to wrap around. We just the default option. Now, using this offset filter, we can actually push the emit vertically and horizontally and have the peak sauce that are being pushed to show up in the opposite part off the image to make the image centred at the border location. All we need to do is input the half value off the image size. So remember the number We're here for the image size defied them by two and tied them in. Click the OK button and now we have this empty area where the original border area is located. Let's add some floral ornaments in his area. I know this is not a good drawing, but we are focusing on the pattern creation here, not growing techniques. And this will be enough to explain the concept. Okay, after we are done, we can press control A to select all of them go to edit menu and choose defined pattern again named is Toe Flower Be for example, Then he'd the okay button to see the pattern in action that start a new file. She if they're five to open a few window just the pattern we just created. Click OK, And there you go, our final pattern in action
12. Vector in photoshop: although for the shop is basically a raster image editing saw for it does have suffered vector features inside it They may not as complete as the vector tools you're finding Adobe Illustrator, but for simple common task, they may come in handy In this video we're going toe coffer The basic vector features inside Photoshopped and on later videos will discuss more advance a vector topics inside photo shop Last big direct on your ship tool in here. Previously, we learned how to create shapes using the shape tour. But we only use the pixel option up here. So the result off the ship tool is always the source a rasta. We haven't come for the other two options, which are the path and the shape option. In this video, we're going toe cover the path option first, and in the next video, we'll cover the shape option. Okay, let's speak the path in here first. If we have path option active when we click dreck like this, the resulting where tango is actually a path a path in photo shop is a vector object that actually exists in the path panel. We just this panel in here notice we have a path layer called walk path. We can create suffer or more rectangle pats. So we have a total of three paths Now in this one walk path layer. If you need to select a path, we have to use a special tool called Pat Selection Tool in here. Well, this story is active. We can select any path we won by clicking on it. You can move the path by dragging them. We can also do free transformation on distracted path. You seeing control T shortcut, just like how we do it with raster layer. If you need to select multiple paths, you can click drag like these, and release are you can see like one off them. Then holds Schiff and click on additional path that you want to include in a selection. Okay, so that is how we can use the path selection tool. Now, what if we want to select only the point and not the whole path? Well, we can do that with another tool which is called the direct selection to toe access it. We need to click and hold the path selection tool. We can see the direct selection tool in here at a glance we can tell right away by their colors. Black is the path selection tool and why it is the direct selection tool. Both off these tools have the same keyboard shortcut. And that will be later. A So oppressing a will actually activate either path selection tool or direct selection tool to switch or Togo between the two tools we can use shift modifier key. So for a Schiff, A ones to select the exploration tool. But a shift a again. Then we have the path selection tool. Okay, if we have the direct selection tool active, we can use days to click on a point to select that point on Lee. And we can also move it. But notice when we try to move it, photo shop will give us this warning. Do you want to turn this life shape into regular path? We will discuss about this later. For now, just click. Yes. Now we can direct the point to any location we want. We can hold chief and select multiple points like this. Move this around. We can even press control t toe access the free transform tool only to the selected points When we create a path, you seen the rectangle tool or the circle tool. That path will still be alive, meaning we can always select it and change the parameters. In the properties panel in here, these properties panel will usually pop out automatically. If we have a life shape selected are created in here. We can change the with the hate and the X and Y coordinates. Also the corners, roundness or radius in here. If we create a circle, we'll have the same parameters as the rectangle. But we don't the corner radius settings. So that is basically what life ship ISS It is a path that still has all of the creation parameters intact. When we convert this life shapes to regular paths, they will lose. All of the parameters in the property span are, but we can tweak them later freely. You see the direct selection tool or the three times from tool. So again, if he used a direct selection and pick this point on a circle, for example, and dragged like these, Photoshopped will ask whether we want to confirm the shape toe a regular path. If we hit, yes, we can see the parameters that we have in a property spanner before are all gone. Okay, You might want to put the property spend docked in here. If you use shapes a lot in photo shop something that you need to be aware when creating vectors in for a shop is there any shapes or paths that you create will be placed inside this work path layer And this walk half layer is a dangerous place to store your path. Okay. Why is that? Because if you un select the walk path layer and create a new path all of the previous paths inside it will be gone forever. Let me just show you how this can happen. Click on this empty area in here. Notice all of the paths and life shapes will be hidden. They are still there, but hidden for now. Okay, now notice when this is not selected and I create a new path. Suddenly all of those previous parts we have before are gone. We now only have this new path that we just created. So again, this is something that you always need to remember. Walk path layer is not the place to store your vector. If you ever need to save your path, you need to do it in at least two ways. First is by renaming the walk path to any name you like by double clicking on it. Notice the new path layer will not have italicized tax like before. This shows that the new layer is no longer like the walk path. Earlier notice. If I d selected and create a new path, photo shop will create a new world packed layer and a custom path layer we have before you still be there. Untouched. Okay, so that is one way we can keep our path from being deleted by photo shop. The second method is to click this create new Path button Don't here, which basically create a new path layer for us and then click it to make it active. If it is not already active before we can create any shapes or paths we want in this layer without having to worry that photo shop will remove it later.
13. Shape layer: when we have a ship tool active, for example, the rectangle tool. Besides big so and path, we also have the ship option. What the ship option actually do is create a new path which exists both in the path layer and in the raster layer as a special air. Because it exists in the raster layer. Also, shape players have visual representation, such as the field color and a stroke color. We know from the previous lesson that the regular path doesn't really contain the sore representation and we're not contribute anything to the image if they emit is exported or published. Shit player, however, is different. Let's create one and see how it is. Different Jews shape in this option quick, direct like these in the can first to draw the rectangle. Okay, now there are two things that just happened here for us. If you look at the path panel photo shop, just create a new path with italicized name. We know that this path layer is a special path because off the name is being italicized like these. The second thing is that in the layer panel we have this smart object, Lee, your type created we can tell that this is a smart object layer because there is a small square at the right bottom corner off the time nail. Also, if we right click on the layer, we have this pasteurized layer option. These smart object layer is tied up or connected with this path layer basically the vector pats now functioning as the mosque for a smart object layer. But in four shops term, this kind off layer is obviously called ship layer Noticed. If we try to filter layers, face ability up here by clicking on a smart object, I can The layer will not be feasible. But if we click this ship layer I can for a shop will hide all a your types except worship player. You can see our ship player are listed or shown. So again, the official name for this type of layer is Shep. Earlier it was like a ship player and you have the path isolation or the direct selection still active. Notice up here in the option panel, we are provided with so many auditions for displaying the ship player. We are now going to focus on this field setting up here If we click on this field box up here, we have several options available. This button we make our ship player hollow or no feel color at all. This button will make it filled up with solid color. Now this button and this rainbow one is actually doing the same thing, and that is making the layer filled with solid color. The difference is with this button, we can select colors from active swatches colors while clicking on this rainbow button. Provide us with a color picker directly to select any color we like. This button will change the field type toe Grady in color. We can pick from existing radiant presets in here. You can also customize the Grady in color using this control stone here. Most off, the settings in here are identical with how we control Grady in color. You see the Grady in tool. This north up here for controlling the opacity, also known as opacity, stops. We can pick one, for example, and change the opacity of value in this capacity input field up here, these notes here below the Grady in Strips controls the grade Ian's color. That is why it is also known as color stops, we can double click on this color stop to pick a custom color from the color picker. We know we can change the grade Ian distribution type in here. We can change the angle or the orientation off the Grady in in here we can re First, the colors change the distribution scale and changed the distribution reference to whether follow the layer size or follow the art board or, in our case, the campus. As we don't have any art board active. The less option we have is this button. This button will make the field color mode toe pattern. We can select any pattern from this pattern presets and don't. Here we can change the scale of the pattern. Currently, a photo shop doesn't have any settings or parameters to control the pattern orientation. This may be a subject to change in future versions. Besides controlling feel, we can also control the strokes off a chef lier basically stroke other lines surrounding the ship player to access its color property. We can click in this box up here that says stroke notice. The settings are basically identical with the field color setting. We have no color solid color, Grady in and finally, pattern. Let's speak black solid color for now there so we can see it better. What makes stroke different is thes two settings in the option panel. This option controls how take the stroke will be rendered. If we set this to 30 for example, as we can see the line become thicker than before. Okay, now this button in here is used to control the behavior off the line rendering. In here, we can select how the line looks, you seem provided presets. Basically, when we select a preset, it will change the settings stone here and also several advanced options that we can control via these more options. Button down. Here we are provided with three default presets. This is solid line, dashed line and dotted line. Let's speak based line for now. This button don't hear controls whether the lines are rendered inside at the center or outside the ship, boundary is pulled on lease control the cap off the lines. This is flat. Found it and extended. This one controls the corners behavior we have sharp around it in comfort or barefoot style . If you want tohave custom dish pattern, we can click on this more option button down here, you can have maximum off three dash get pattern, for example. Let's say the first dash, it's one, and the gap is to then the next day is tree and a gap History. Also, we can see the desk pattern. We look itself following the numbers we set before along the ship's boundary. You get the idea now if you create a certain best pattern and also the settings in here, and you want to save it as a preset, so you can use it later. Again and again, you can click this safe Barton in here notice in the stroke. Presets fewer our custom stroke are now available as a new preset. I don't really need the straw preset, so really, just remove it. To do that, just click on the preset click on this option button up here, which looks like a deer simo and choose the right stroke
14. Photoshop pen tool: the pen tools in Father Shop lets you create vector prats. Before, for a shop only had one type off mental, which is called mental. But now, if you click and hold the pen tool, we have to type of pen tools, the ordinary pen tool and this new one, which is called the free form Mental. Let's discuss the mental first. When we have the Pento active up here, we can see that we can choose whether to create a path or create shape. We've talked about the differences between the two in previous videos. Let's Big Path for now. If we click and release like this, we are creating sharp corner points. But if we click and wreck like this, we are creating a busier points. Now. Points like these in for show are called anchor points. Okay, so again, if I click release like these, the anchor points generated will be corner and Car Pines, which doesn't have any handles. But if we click direct like this, we are creating anchor points with busy handles, so this handles that are coming out off the anchor points are called busy handles. Its main function is to control the curvature off the line on that current and car poin. So basically, this anchor points becomes smooth because we have these handles and his anchor points are sharp because it doesn't have any handles. To finish a path creation with a pan tool, we can either click on the first point to make the path closed are you can also press the escape key, are using my preferred method, and that will be holding the control key and this click on empty area on the campus. What you don't want to do when finishing a path Creation is pressing. Enter because if you do that for a shop will actually listen like the walk path layer that's making it invisible. So if you do press enter accidentally, you need to go to the path panel and click on the walk path toe. Activate it again. That is, if you want to continue working on that path. Another method off creating an anchor point. Using the pen tool is by using the all key modifier this method. We let us create non symmetrical handles. So, for example, I click released like this to create corner points and in his position. If I click drag like this and then hold out and move it to other direction. We can see the handles become asymmetrical, have been finished this path creation by holding control and click on his empty area. If we use the direct selection tool, we can see the difference between these two anchor points. This one has symmetrical anchor points, so if we move this one, the other will move also with this one. If we move it like so the other handle doesn't move. They are independent to each other. So from this example, we can conclude that there are three types of vector anchor points in photo shop corner anchor points busy and corporations and lazier corner and corporations. Corner anchor points is always sharp because it doesn't have any handles. Basie anchor points are always looks Muth, because it has handles on. The handles are always symmetrical and finally the busier corner and corporations which have handles. But because the handles are independent, we can have sharp and yet curved anchor points at the same time. Now, if you create certain type off anchor points and you just realize that you are creating the wrong type, no worries. We can convert anchor points from one type to another using a tool called Convert Point Tool. Using this tour. If you want to confront a corner point for busy a point, you can click and direct that anchor point like so notice. Busy handles will come out from that anchor point. If you already have a busy a point like this, we can comfort this basic corner type by dragging the handle with a comfort point tool. Remember, we are dragging the handle now, not the anchor point. So now, as we can see, the handles become independent or asymmetrical. If we want to confront busy appoint or busy a corner poin back toe a corner point, we can simply click on the point using this conferred point all. And as you can see the point become corner point again. Now let's focus on the ed and lead anchor point tools in here. This ad anchor point tools. As the name implies, we'll add anchor poin on any location where we click the path, and this one, the delete anchor point tool is the opposite. So if I click this anchor point, for example, it will delete that anchor point. The free form pen tool lets you create path by dragging just like you drove. You see the brush tool. So to give you an example, click the free for mental in here and just draw like these to create a path. After we release, we get this path notice. If we use the direct selection tool, we can see that the anchor points and handles are generated on the fly when we drag around the freeform mental when using the pan tool, we can actually access lot off tool related to the vector editing function quickly using Suffer a T modifier shortcut. First, it's the control modifier key. When the pento is active, pressing the control key will temporarily egged if it the direct selection tool. So in this way, we can slack and move points or changing busy handles without leaving depend tool. Another useful method when using the pen to in the control key modifier is toe and a path creation. We used this technique before, so, for example, if he drove some path, you see the pen tool and when in certain step we want to end a path creation process, we can hold control. We are no in their expression to mode and then click anywhere in canvas. By doing these, we end the process off path creation and can stop a new path creation. The next key modifier is the all key modifier when in a pencil holding the all key, we'll change the active tool toe conferred Point all. So in this way, we contract to confirm this corner point, for example, toe Obey zee a corner plane or any other staffs that we can do with the comfort point tool . As we discussed earlier. We can also add and delete anchor points when you see in the mental. And for this we actually don't need to press any keyboard key. If we want to create a new anchor point simply over the mouse on a path notice, we will have this plus sign cursor. Click on it to add an anchor point on that location to remove an anchor point, using the mental simply over the pentacle on top. Off existing and car poin known as we have this minor simmer. Click on it to delete that anchor point. So there you go, the panel in photo shop. I know if you are new to photo shop. Using the panto is a bit cumbersome at first, but just like any other skills, you need to practice a lot to master it. The good news is the panto exists not only in Father Shop but also in other adobe software such as Adobe Illustrator, any Met CC and even after effects. Even graphic software outside Adobe Family such as Tree, DS, Max and Preta, etcetera has vector toe similar to the mantle, so getting familiar with the panto in photo shop will actually help you. Master Defector Tool in other graphics offer.
15. Combining paths: in photo shop, we can march subtract, Intersect and many other Boolean operations to the paths in photo shop. This is simply called path operations. There are two ways that we can use. PATH operations first is in path level, where we actually change the path of structure. Our second we can with Visalia inside the ship player in the second method, the combined paths will still be a life independently so we can edit them later easily. Let's discuss how we can combine ordinary paths to create a new path. Let's create a rectangle. Make sure the option up here is settle path. Click Dragon here. Next, let's create on Ellipse Path Press, a Togo towpath selection mode. We have these two pats now, if I click on the circle and to subtract in here, then price Schiff and then click this rectangle a path to select it. Also go up here and just march shaped components. Just yes, notice the rectangles become subtracted by the circle a path. Using this method, we can create complex paths by first creating simple paths and then combining them. Let's look some off the options for merging pats or path operations in photo shop we can see in here for a shop support four type of bullion operations combine. It's like reading so track. It's like what we just did before intersect will have offer lapping area between the pats and the less one. The exclude option is the opposite. Off intersect, it will remove the offer Lapped area where? Reserve duress. Let's see this in action. Create a new path. You seeing the mantle? Any ship, We'll do this. Make sure some part of it is offer lapping the previous bath. Okay, While this path is like that, change the path operation option to intersect. No price a Togo towpath selection tool Hold shift and click this one So we know half both selected, then march. As we can see, the Intersect will save the offer lapping part and remove the rest. Let me undo this. Okay, If we used the exclude option up here instead and select both off the paths again then march. The result is exactly the opposite of the previous one. So that is how you combine shapes in path left. So you're seeing a path operation. Another approach of combining path is by using the path operation also like before. But we can do this non destructively inside a ship player. Let's see how we can do this. Go to the ship rectangle toe. Make sure the tool modus in ship mode, not path or pixel. Then click Drag like this in the campus. Change the field color to red so we can see it more clearly and make the strokes to no color. Okay, now let's speak the pen tool. Before we draw anything, make sure it is settle path because if this is set to ship, it will create a new ship layer, which is not what we want for now. So big path. Now hold control and click on an empty area to de select any path. So now no path is currently selected. Next in the path operation options choose track. If we draw directly for a shop, may create a new walk path layer instead, off altering the existing ship player. We want to draw directly in the existing chef player. So go toe Death panel. Make sure this path layer is like that. Notice aside, row like these. The path that we are creating will cut out the original rectangular path we have in this shape layer, we can create another one. For example, like these. If we pick the path you've seen the path selection tool and then move this path around these parts are still alive and in abandon. What we see as the red color in here is actually the raster representation based on the path operation each off these ships contain something that you always need to remember. And so I need to mention this again and again if I have to, Is that paths live in their own vector world, which is this path panel? Not this one. This layer panel are the raster world because for shop is first and foremost a raster based graphic application. In order for the vectors to show up easily, it needs to be linked to the raster layer panel in here. That is the basic concept all vector in a photo shop and this concept goes along the way and we'll avoid you from confusion later. For example, here is a common problem beginners often face when working with both a vector and raster In photo shop in the layer panel, we can see that the shape layer is active currently, but in PATH panel, none off the path is active in his condition. If we only see the layer panel and in just the pants tool, we might expecting that when we draw a pap, it will draw in a packed layer belonging to the ship player. But when we can the path, it doesn't go inside the ship player. Instead, it created a new walk half layer. So just remember to check the path panel off where you want to create the new path. If we have this active like this, drawing a new path with the parental will create the new path inside this path layer. Thus will also the look off the corresponding shape layer in the layer panel. Another thing that you need to be aware. Also using these shaped tools such as the rectangle toe political tool as Phaedra, with the PATH option turned on, we always resulting a new ship located at the walk path earlier. We cannot create rectangle path inside existing ship player. I know this is a bit annoying. Perhaps this behavior will change in the future fashion off our shop, but currently that is how Photoshopped shape tool works. The work wrong for this is to cut and paste the path from the walk path to the ship layer path. So, for example, we want to slack this rectangle press a first to go towpath selection tool. So, like this path control acts toe cut it. It's like the ship player pad. Baste it in by pressing control V. Now we have this rectangle shape inside the chef layer and we can change the path operation as we need it.
16. Path practical usage: We've learned a lot about vector paths in photo shop until this point, but we haven't really touched all the things that we can do. It pats in this video. We're going to learn some practical usage off bath. The first thing we can do it path is help us creating selection. In this example, I have an image like this. We need to select this image and cut pasted toe. Another image to select long, curved, raging like this will be very hard to do if we use the police lasso tool or the lasso tool , but with the pencil, we can easily select it. So use the pento, make sure it is settle path, then click in here and then dragged like this and then just follow the path. The nice thing about path is that we can move the points later and tweak the handles before converting it into a selection. After we like the path result, we can convert it to selection using shortcut control. Enter already in. Also, click the path layer in the path panel and then click this button that say's load path as selection or hold control and click this thumbnail are you can right click on it and choose make selection. Yes, I know there are so many ways to do the same thing personally. I like to use control. Enter shortcut to quickly conferred path to selection and also holding control and click on the pets. Tom Neal I found these methods much faster to perform. But if we only select several paths from a group of existing paths in the same path layer and one them to become a selection, and the only method you can use is the right clicking method. But more about this later in the project, Weston one for the shop ability that most graphic artists often offer look is the ability to confront selection into a path. This feature is very helpful in condition where you need to tweak the selection by moving the point or with adjusting basically handles. Let's see how this work. Let's pick a poorly lasso tool, then create random selection like these pick, elliptical, marquee tool hold shift andro circle selection in here just so we have some complex election to walk with. Now to confirm this selection toe a path we can write, leak and just make walk path in here out again. Also, go to the PATH panel and then click this button down here that say's make walk path from selection for a shop will ask the tolerance value. This value will determine how far assembling will go to make thing easier. Basically, the higher the value, which is 10 pixels at maximum, the less anchor points generated but more busy handles created to accommodate smooth curvature. The lower the value, which is 0.5 big sauce at minimum. We'll make the resulting paths toe have more corner anchor points and last Maisie handles. Okay, I'll set this toe to pixels for now and click the OK button. As we can see now we have a path extracted from the selection. We can adjust this path as we like, and when we are ready, we can press control, enter to convert it back to a selection if that is what you want to do. Besides selection, we can also use path for creating raster strokes. Now the stroke itself can be created using the brush setting from the brush tool, you razor smudge tool, blur, toe, etcetera, basically any toes in photo shop that uses its brush engine can be used to draw the stroke . For example, we want to create a curve from here to here for the actual stroke. We want to use the brush toe setting, so go to brush tool first big hard edge brush dip and let's make the size around 15 big sauce. We can use the records key shortcut to change the brush size, said the opacity to 100%. We can press zero on the keyboard to change the opacity, the 100% and let's speak black color for the foreground color. We can do this quickly, also by plastic de letter key in a keyboard, which will make the colors to the default colors. Finally turned this button. Always use pressure for size active. We're going to discuss more in depth about these option later, but for a quick explanation, it will make the brush size sensitive to open pressure so the setting is used with pressure sensitive devices such as welcome tablets. Okay, now the brush setting is set up correctly. We can click on a pen to make sure it is, said towpath, Then create a path like this. For example, whole control and click any empty area toe and a path creation. No right click and choose stroke path. Norris Photo shop will open up the stroke path panel in here. We can select pencil brush, razor, etcetera. Big brush as this is what we want now the simulate pressure option. In here we're simulate pressure from light pressure, heart pressure and then back to like, pressure again along the stroke. Let's turn this on for now, then click the OK button. Notice A. Raster strokes has bean created using the brush so settings as the reference. As we can see, the starting line is thin. It gets thicker in the middle, Then it gets thin again as it reaches the end of the curve. This variable struck with happened due to the simulate pressure we have before. The last thing we're going to discuss in this video is vector mask. Basically, vector mask is on image mosque. But instead of using another image to control the opacity, it uses a factor path to create a vector mask. For example, for this layer in here, we can create a vector mask by clicking these at layer mosque button down here. But remember pressing this button as is, will only create a Raster mosque, not a vector mask To create a vector mosque, we need to press and hold the control key first. Then click on this button. We now have a mosque here. It looks like ordinary mask. But notice If we right click on the mask you can see the world disable a factor Mosque in here. It shows that this mosque is actually a vector mosque. OK, now we can add it or at shape to the vector mask just like how we do it with shape layer. You can also use the path operation up here tohave more controls over the massacre is out.
17. Project: Airplane coloring: In this video, we will start creating a simple illustration, often airplane, using the tools with learn in a previous lessons. The first step to create our illustration or any illustration in general will be sketching . We're going to discuss more in depth lesson about brushes, including sketching brushes and how to use pressure sensitive tablet in later videos. So for now, I will using only my mouth to do the sketching. Which standard brush setting. Okay, so just create a new layer. They news the brush tool right click and choose the round soft brush. Change the brush size to seven p sauce. Change the opacity toe 30% and breast D to set the colors to the default colors. Just start sketching together. Rough idea out for our project here. I want to create a cartoony airplane, one that has a face like in Pixar's Carter movies. Our speed up the process so you don't get bored. - Okay , After we have the sketch ready, it is time to trace it in tow. Pats. Now, if you dressed directly on top off this image, most likely you will get confused as the lines from the sketches are too strong. we will have hard time differentiating the path lines against the sketch lines. So to avoid these, we need to make the sketch layer less, or take reduced the opacity to 20% now. Used to pen to make sure the tool, Modus said. Towpath clicking here quick dreck in here to create a beige curve. Then click dragon here also and in here, click on this point toe, close it and drag like these to shape the cockpit area for the nose clicking here. Click Dragon here and click again. Don't hear while in pentacle we can hold control toe temporarily switch to direct selection tool. Click on this empty area to finish the current path creation while the control key pressed . We can select this point and two wickets handle as needed. Remember that we are creating all of these paths in Walk Path layer, which is very dangerous as this work path layer are meant for temporary path, not for storing path. So double click on the name and rename it toe base shapes. Make sure that these bath layer is active and has continued drawing the paths for our airplane for the I or the phone cut, but we know clicking here. Click Dragon here. Click tracking here to ship the side curve off the window. Then click dragon here and click drag in here full control and click on an empty area. As we can see, we actually don't need to cross this path. Okay? From this point, the process will be identical, so I just speed up the video. I am adding additional area in the nose and the upper theater so later we can select this radiance easier. After we have all off the path lines created, we can move on to creating the base colors. But before we do that, let's add sky color first on a background layer, click on a four grown color and so, like a light blue color, something that is near toe white color. Okay, select the background color. Let's pick a blue sunny day sky collar. I think they should be good. Next, Select the Grady in Tool and pick the first preset, which will use the four grown color in a big room color automatically, then click direct from here. Toe up here. Press the shift key while doing these to make the Grady and orientation straight vertically . Okay, we know half the sky color now. We don't actually need the schedule earlier anymore. So you can hide it or deleted if you want to hide it. It is a good practice to name it first. So later with no What's inside this layer? Usually I just name it sketch or just put any named It makes sense to you later. Let's create a new layer. A name, it based color. Or just be for short. Okay, Now we're going to add colors into this layer. Go towpath panel. Select our patent a year. Press A to switch towpath selection tool. Select on the main body. Right. Click and choose. Make selection. Pick a color you want to use for the main airplane body. I want to use yellow color for now as it contrasting nicely with the blue background color . Press out lead to fill the selection with the foreground color. Next, we need to turn on lock Transparent pixels. Option up here. This will make the next color feel only apply to the existing pick sauce on will not create any new pick sauce. Okay, go back, towpath. Clear again. So, like this front window glass. Hold shift and these three circles right, click and choose. Make selection. Pick a dark blue color, then press out. Lead toe. Feel in that color notice at this area. Although the selection passed through the plane body. But because the layer has a transparent pixel, lock this area in here, we'll get discarded. Let's do the same thing with the nose and the mouth. Select the path for the nose. Make selection. Fill it with red color. Select the path for the mouth maximization. Fill it with off white color for the upper theater. We want to make it darker, so create a selection using this path. Then you want to intersect the selection with this one rightly and just make selection. Pick this option, intersect with selection and then hit the okay button. Use a darker color off lead toe. Feel the selection with the new color. Okay, Next we want to add wings and the fins for these. We want to turn off the transparent picture law. Otherwise, it will only fill out raging inside the main body only goto pat panel. And so, like all of these prats which are doing the telling and the opera thin. Why click and to make selection? No. Pick a color that is different from the body, but almost similar. Why are we doing this? Because we need this colors for quick selection leader with the Magic One tool if we have doing color, is exactly the same with the body. Then we won't be able to select these parts as individual region. First toe. Pick the color from the existing color. We can click on the foreground color box. All the color picker window is active. We can actually click anywhere on the canvas to sample its color. Change this color toe a bit brighter. So we have different color from the main body. Okay, out the lead to fill the selection with a new color we know have completed ending based colors to our illustration. In the next video, we'll add. Shading and highlights. Toe are growing
18. Project: Airplane shading: This is what we have from the previous project lesson in this lesson, we're going to continue our airplane illustration by adding shading colors to it for our illustration. We're goingto have remained light source from this top left direction, so just imagine that the sun is in this position. Although easily we don't have any son growing in our canvas, you always need to define the light sources location before jumping toe shading process as this will make sure the consistency off are shedding colors. The first face off shedding is the local shading face. Now this type of shading is inspired by indirect lighting or ambient occlusion in three D computer graphics. We will talk about this more in that later. For now, to make things simple in local shedding, face will add shading toe each color Ragen off the drawing. We also add contact shadows, which are shadows on corners and crevices to help us select the color agents. We are going to use the making one tool a lot because we're going to select the Radian from this base color layer. But we don't want to draw anything in this layer. We need to lock the pixels and the position off this layer this way. If you accidentally try toe pain on this layer or try to move it for a shop will prevent that from happening. Next, create a new layer and rename it to local shading or simply el. For short clip. Mask this layer to the base color layer, then changed the blending mode to multiply. No, let's at some shading for the body area force used to magic one tool said the tolerance to six. Turn off contiguous and sample or layer options. For now. Click on the base color layer and click on this area. Go back to the local shading layer Press. Be to choose the brush tool for a shedding. We really want to use the soft brush tip and said the opacity to 20%. Click on a foreground color and click on this body area to sample the color. Tracked this down for enough to get darker color. Precise the brush So it is about this size compared to the airplane growing humane have different airplane growing size, so just use approximation for the brush size. Okay, no drag in this area like this and then drag again, but make it more to the right and again. So basically, we are creating a gradation off color from right to dark, based on our imaginary light source at the last stop area. Okay, no noticed. In these areas where everybody meets the wings and offense, we need to add some contact shadows in here. So like the brush a bit smaller and add more darkness to these areas. Also, we'll add some darkness where the small windows are. Let's create local shading. Also, for the red color area, go back to our base color earlier. If you want to do this with short car, you can hold the out key and then press the open bracket key. These will move the layer selection down, so now this layer gets like that. Press w toe access the magic one tool click on the red color. Hold out and press, causing Brecher to move up the layer. Selection to the local shedding layer. Open the foreground color and picked a red color. Make it darker. Press be toe, activate the brush tool and just brush like this and again. So the bottom part is darker than the opera part. Okay, for the mouth. Select this part with the magic one tool. Go back to local shading layer. Choose a dark gray color at some shading at the top area off the selection region. Okay, let's make a theater gap in this area used to fend toe. Create this shape control. Enter to confer it into a selection. Make sure the base color is active. Go to Magic one tool. Now hold out the Eustis of track mode and click in this area. Old selection is now Craig. Go back to the local shading layer and used to brush tool to add darkness to this area for the wings and the fins. Generally, the processes are identical, so I'll just speed up the video here. The global shading phase is where we create direct shadows, which are shadows that our custody from one object onto another object. In his global shading face, we're not restricted anymore. By the color regions, we can have shadows that span across multiple colorations. Let's create a layer for this global shading. Name it G for global shipping. Change the blending more to multiply. Click this layer also to the base color layer. Okay, the first dark shadow we're going to create aced the front wings and the tail wings. Let's speak poorly, lasso tool and wrote A shadow line like these and this one also. Okay, now we need to intersect this selection with the plane body shape. Go to the base color layer and use the magic one tool. Hold shift and altogether click in this area. So now the selection are intersected with the body color. Goto Global shedding layer. Select dark color for global or direct shadow are usually use other colored and black to simulate the sky color. Let's speak dark blue color for now. Used to brush, tool and brush like this next. Because we have sunlight from this direction, we're going to add another direct shadow from the body to the wings. Let's use the pen tool for this clicking here. Clean wrecking here, clicking here and just follow the shape off the plane. Okay, press control. Enter. To convert this into a selection, go to the base color layer and with the magic one tool active. Hold out and click on this out or area. Go back to our global shading layer and just brush like this and again for the mouth shadow . The process will be similar, so I'll just speed up the video. The next step is adding highlights depending on your objects material. You may not need to add highlights. For example, on dope or rough materials such as stone or walls. You really be needing highlights on grossly surfaces on Lee for our illustration. Here we want to make the whole plane looks glossy, so we're going to add highlights everywhere. Let's create a new layer. Name it Age for highlights. Change the blaming mode. The screen as highlights, will make colors beneath it brighter. Clip this layer also just like the other, shedding layers. First, let's focus on the grass area. For us, the glass is a bit different from the rest as its refractive and reflective. At the same time in here, I want to give on illusion that these glasses actually reflect the surrounding this. Imagine that we have horizon and mountains surrounding this plane. We will be able to see them on the glass reflection. So let's speak the mental click dreck like this and click drink again and so on until roughly we have something like this. Press control enter to confirm it into a selection so that this layer just magic one tool and hold shift and altogether and click on a blue colored glass area. Go back to highlight layer to see brush. Be quiet for the foreground color. You can easily do this by pressing D to make the colors to it's default. Then press X to switch the color between foreground and background. OK, now click drag like this and again, but this time lower. Basically, we want the lower part brighter than the upper part. Why? Well, we want to simulate the color off the haze in the horizon. Now for dress off the process, it will be fairly similar, basically create a path converted to selection, draw with the brush tool and then repeat again. There is nothing really new in this face, so I'll just speed up the video again. - The last there for our plane illustration is aiding the outline or the line artwork. Now, depending on your illustration style, you may not need any line artwork if you don't need them as it's really not your style. You can skip this process, but for those of you who want to know how to create line artwork. Let's continue with our lesson. We learned before that we can grow strokes with our path, and the stroke rendering will follow the brush tool or any other brush based tool in for a show. Therefore, we need to change the brush setting first to suit our need. First, go to the brush tool, change the size to 10 pixels. Make sure the opacity set 100% change the color to rack yellow or brownish color. Set all off these pen pressure setting toe off except the less one, which will control the size off the brush. Next, create a new layer. Name it all for outlines for the outlines layer, we really don't need to clip it. Also, just leave the blending mode to normal after the fault. Go towpath layer, press a tow, access the path selection tool and just choose all of the pats we want to use for the stroke rendering right leak. Two stroke sub path in here. If you want to stroke the mall, then you can simply click this button. Now. The lines will not be perfect at the first stroke. To fix these, we can use the eraser tool measure. The brush is set to the heart brush, said the opacity it 100% and then just arrest the parts that we don't need this area. Also, we can also use the poorly lasso tool and impress the lead After we select the part we want to remove now some time, we want to change the color off the stroke. We can do that by adding layer style called color overly. Just click in this color box toe pick any color that you like. I don't really want to change the color, so I just hit Cancel and there you go on airplane illustration.
19. Wacom setup: in previous lessons, we have covered how to create illustration using only our mouth. From this point forward, we're going to use pressure sensitive device such as welcome tablet. In this video, we're going to learn how to set up welcome tablet to make it fit with our illustration workflow. Also, we are going to create suffer adjustment toe for a shops you I and shortcuts to make our drawing process even faster. Now, if you're using other brains such as Huayuan or handphone or Microsoft Surface, most off the setups will be generates. So I believe you should be able to copy the settings with your own devices before moving on some off. You might be wondering why is using pressure? Sensitive device is very important for graphic artists to answer this question. Let me just show you how it it's like growing with only mouse. First us using pressure sensitive tablet such as Wake on. Currently, I am using my mouse. Let me pick the brush tool and choose heart age brush. Now I want this brush to change its size based on a pen pressure. To do that, I need to turn this option up here. Okay, now watch when I do this with the mouse, as we expect that the brush size stayed the same. Okay, now I'm switching to my welcome tablet. Notice aside, row stroke with different hand pressure the size off the brush change accordingly. Okay, and not only the size. Using this option up here, we can also tell the brush to change the opacity dynamically based on a pen pressure. Another advantage off using pen pressure is, well, the pen shape. Our hands are likely be more familiar drawing with pen than with mouse having something in a tape off the fingers, although US toe have more control than something that we grab in our palm. So from this example, we can see big differences when working with a mouse. Force us working with a pressure sensitive pen. If you are new to using welcome tablet, you may need to adjust it so it works perfectly with your own style or preferences. To adjust the settings you need to open welcome Tablet properties application. Now this application should be included in a box along with your product. If somehow you don't have this application, you can always download it from welcomes official website after you have it installed. Yes. Open the application. You will say something like this. Let's discuss this area with three rows off panel force. The first role is where we have all off our welcome devices listed. I have one plugged in tow my PC now, which is the's in towards three. I own this model from more than 10 years now and it's still working. Great. Even the pen nib or the plastic tape off the pen is still the original one for 10 years. It doesn t great or anything like that. So I guess my old welcome tablet is the living proof off where cum tablets quality. Okay, now, depending on your device, you will have different settings. Don't here. Basically this role depends on this roll out here. We can see these two components Don't here because up here I have selected this device. So in here we have this hierarchical structure in the U I you, for example I pick the function panel in here. Everything below this role will change. Now we are talking about these buttons in my tablet. But if I click the spend everything down here is talking about this pen. Okay? I'm sure you'll get the idea. Let's pick the pen for now, as the pan setting is more general than the tablet buttons. Okay, After selecting the pen in the third row, we can specify the application if none are selected. Are If you haven't specify any application, these all other option will be applied. So you see this row in here we can have different tablet behavior for different application in our computer. If, for example, we want to create a profile for photo shop, you need to make sure that photo shop is opened first. So the welcome properties can detect it automatically. Notice if I click this add or a plus sign button in here for a shop will be listed in here . Select it and click the OK button. As we can see, the app are now list that as custom app in this role. Okay, Now, if I select this photo shop up like this and make changes, don't hear all of the changes later will only applicable or active when we are walking inside photo shop our side for a shop or in other application. The settings will not be used as welcome will use the sad things we have in all other preset in here. Instead, let's discuss the settings for the bento at the Bento lab. We can see that I set the field setting toe almost firm the third from the right. This actually controls how sensitive you're welcome to your pressure. If you want to go even further, you can click this customize button and we can see the curve by default. The curve is straight. Basically, the harder you press which is this way to the right, the higher the output, which is up here. Now there are two things I want to change because I tend to use Wycombe Pen lightly. Meaning? I don't want to press too hard on the pen just to get declines or opaque brush. Therefore, I direct this note to the left a bit with this to get full output result, I only need to press until maximum at 80 or 90 pressure level. Perhaps it is this something that keep my welcome still in good condition, even after more than 10 years off usage. Okay, Next, select this point on direct slightly towards the bottom right area. You might be wondering Now, why am I doing this well, because with this girl, it will be harder to get high pressure that's making my line growing looks better. I found this curve suitable with my hand characteristic. Feel free to try it out and make your own custom curve if you want to. For DoubleClick distance setting, I said this at the Center for Third Sensitivity. I generally don't you spend tilting in my world floor so any off the setting will do. But I lived the setting at normal for men. Broker button, the bottom one is said to rightly, and the upper one is set to double Klay. This way we can finish polio lasso selection fast but expressing on the stop button next, the rest are setting. I don't typically use Eraser tip on the pen because I find it too slow compared pressing in keyboard to switch to erase of tool. So I left the settings toe. It's the fall. Let's move on to mapping now for mapping. Of course, you always want tohave landscape in here unless you have special monitor that can be tilted and you like working in portrait mode. Next is the mode. There are two modes here, pen and mouse. You always want to use pen mode for tablet devices. If you use mouse mode, the pan will behave exactly like the mouse or attract plan. So there are no mapping between your tablet and your monitor. If you move your pen or the tablet surfers and then lived up and move again, the cursor will continue moving from where it left off before Now. This condition, really, it's not ideal for growing in the pen mode. The distant ratio between the screen and the tablet will be consistent, and this will make our brain and hence muscle able to co ordinate better and become accustomed to it much faster. So again, I recommend you to use the pen mode and not the mouse mode. Okay, said the screen area in a tablet area toe full. But turn on this forced proportion option. This will help also to improve our hand coordination. As you can see, I have a very old welcome tablet that has four by three size ratio because back then, 10 years ago, most monitor screen has four by three resolution. Currently, my display is a modern full HD monitor, which has 16 by nine size ratio, basically much wider than all four by three Standard monitor. Therefore, we can see some area off my tablet not being used, and that is totally fine. If you on newer fashion off Wickham tablet. Most of them are 16 by nine size ratio, so you shouldn't lose some off the tablet part like what I have here. Next we will discuss the function buttons now, depending on your welcome device, what you have in here might be entirely different for the function buttons. I only need to set up five buttons. Three buttons is important to our workflow, and the less two buttons is just a nice feature toe have because we can replace it with a keyboard. So click on the function buttons in here create a new profile Jews Photo shop First Queen. It a way to control the brush size. For this, I'll be using the touch strip in my welcome tablet. If you have newer in towards pro Beckham tablet, you can program the touch ring for this Jews keystrokes for this for the up movement. Clicking here impressed the closing break up key for the dawn movement. Press the open bracket key. Name our set up in here with brush size and then click the OK button. Next, the buttons or the express keys again. If you have different welcome product, just find any experts key position that you like to set dysfunction. For my case for this button, I'll set it to keystrokes, clicking here and impress and hold out, then crossing record and then release the out, then press the letter named is to a player. Basically, the key stroke in Welcome Tablet properties is like macro key setting in gaming devices. If later we click on this button for a shop, will select layer on top off corn layer and change the tool to brush automatically. So that is why we put being there. B is for the brush toe shortcut. Next, we need to do this also with this button juice keystroke clicking here, press and hold out and then pick the opening Brecher. Then press w name this macro. Keep reset as down Leah. Okay, this button later will select layer below the current layer and change the active to toe magic. One tool. This is again because or workflow require us to create selection from the base color layer . You see the magic one tool for this button and this button. These are not very important for our workflow. But I changed this toe modifier, key and just Schiff. And this one is modifier Key. Also with your spout. Later, we can use these keys instead having to click on a keyboard. We can use the magic one tool plus the Schiff or the alky modifier in here toe. Quickly tweak the resulting selection for the pop up menu. I don't use welcome. Spoke up main you that much. So I will skip this part and move on to setting out for a shop.
20. Photoshop setup: after setting up our welcome tablet, It is time to make our photo shop works faster. Based on our workflow, your first thing we're going to do is to set up the shortcut. Now we'll be using color picker lot when growing illustration and moving our mouths, or are Wycombe Pen Back and forth to this location is not that convenient. There is actually a shortcut to quickly open the hard color picker and that will be shift out and right, click and hold. If you do this with the mouse, it is very snappy. But I found that this hot color picker is not that responsive. When you sing Welcome pen. You need to hold Schiff and out and then right click. But then you need to move it around to make the hard color picker to show up Orender, use a keyboard shortcut to call the color picker. We know now when working with welcome tablet like this. If you are a right handed person, your right hand will be in this position in your left hand will be in this position. So basically your left hand Arlen towards the left side, off the keyboard. So that is why, when picking key leaders for our custom shortcut, it is a good idea to find the ones that are positioned at the left side, off the keyboard, near the position off our left hand. Of course, if you are left handed, you might want the other way around. But you will understand the concept here. Basically, we are aiming for speed workflow. Okay for the color picker a shortcut. I want to use the land of Z. Why? Well, because it is located at the left side, off the keyboard and also by default. Z is used for the zoom tool, which we never use because we use the space bar key combination to zoom in and zoom out off the canvas to override the keyboard setting. We can go to edit menu people, shortcut and make sure this is said to tools. Scroll down until you find a foreground color picker clicking here and impressed the letter Z. You will get this warning because Z already used for zoom as default, Click the accept button up here. Next we need to change the polygon lasso tool pressing l is too far away. We want to change the keyboard shortcut for polygonal lasso tool to letter. See, the process will be similar. Just find a poly lasso tool in here. Click in here and type letter C in a T board. Except the last step we want to do is to make our you I more convenient. We want to move the tools panel to derive why? Well, you see me before moving back and forth between the layer panel and it'll spend all right, it's just too far away. So just grab this panel header on drag it to this area. There you go. Everything is at the right side. So you don't need to move the cursor back and forth across the screen all the time. The less setting is optional and that is over riding this much tool keyboard shortcut with leather ass key. Why is this optional? Because later we can access this much tool of iron toe preset. So having a short cut for this much tool, it's not really that urgent. But for my set up, I will change the so much to shortcut to letter s by default Letter as key is said to clone stamp tool. But we will not be using clone stamp tool in our workflow. So for us, it will be safe to use the letter s key.
21. Brush settings: in this video, we'll be dealing with brush shut things. But before we talk about brush settings, I want to explain for us about the hierarchy off brush related presets. This is important. Avoid confusion later. Down the road, the first basic level off presets is the brush presets. Now, in photo shop, there is no clear separation between the term brush presets and brush tip presets. Well, there is, actually, but people usually get confused differentiating between the two terms abusing the term brushed the presets to make things more clear to you. Okay, Now let's open the brush panel. What you see in this panel, which is this area here, is the brush tip precept, not brushes. Notice we have this brush tip shape selected in here. If we have other category in here selected, for example, ship dynamics category, we will have different parameters. At the right side. The brush tip basically controls the shape of the image coming out off the brush tool. There are three types off brush tip, standard image brush tips, dynamic brush tips and round brush steps. The image brush tip is just a raster image assigned as a brush tape. We can create this kind of brush tip from scratch. If you look at the brush presets in here, any brush tips that has a custom image like this one or this one, these are all image brush tips. Okay, The second type off brush tip is the dynamic brush tip. This brush tips are unique because instead of using raster image, it actually simulate real brush physical behavior in visual treaty environment. If you look at the brush depreciates in here, you'll see brush tips with bristle icons or airbrush Aiken's or Pencil Aiken's. These brush tips are the dynamic brush tips. You cannot create custom dynamic brushes. You can only pick from existing dynamic brush and tweak its parameters because it is simulating the brush in three D. It's support plan tilting. Let's speak this bristle brush, for example. I'll make it bigger so we can see it better notice. As I tilt my welcome pen, the brush tip will tell. Also, virtually Let's try these air brush brush tip. Make it bigger. Also notice. As I change the angle off my pen, the brush will follow. The Turk brush tip is the Round Brush D, which is basically a dynamic brush tip also, but it doesn't have any physical behavior, like the bristle brush or the airbrush steps. We have used this round brush tips before and will be using this round brush tips again for our illustration workflow. What is unique about this round brush is that we can adjust the hardness off it. Low hardness value will make the ages blurry. High hardness value will make it sharp. We've discussed this before, so let's move on to the other settings. The flip check box in here. We'll flip the image. Of course, we cannot see the difference here because our brush has circle or shape. So let's speak this brush that looks like leave and then play around with the spacing value down here. The spacing value will determine the distance between image generated by the brush. Make this value bigger toe almost 100% so we can see each brush image. OK, notice every turn on this flip axe. It will flip the brush tip image horizontally. If I click on this flip, why it will flip vertically next the angle and around us, we can change the values from this input fields or we can do it from this box to change the angle. We can write this arrowhead and to change the wrongness we can write this notes. The next level off presets is the brush presets. A brush preset contains a brush tip and many other parameters that control the behavior off the brush. The settings off the brush can be tweaked in the brush panel. As we can see, we have ship dynamics scattering texture and so many other categories in here that we can control. It will take too much time to discuss all of them in this video. So we will discuss on Lee the most important parts off brush settings and let you explore the rest off it yourself. First, let's see the ship dynamics category first. In this category, we can specify things that are related to the shape off the brush off. Here we can see size Jeter. Now, the word Jeter means differences are randomness, so size Jeter in here means the randomness of the brush size Notice. If we direct this fill you up, we can see in the preview. Don't hear that the brush size becomes very the control section in here will determine whether the size off the brush is controllable or not. If we set this to off, the brush will always be at the same size. If we set this to pen pressure, the size will change based on how hard we press the pen Now. This setting later can be overrated by this button up here in your option panel. There are other settings that we can use in here, such as Fade. Fate will always make our brush size become smaller based on the distance value. We can change the distance failure in its input field. Panty Oh will use the pen tilting to dictate the size, and we can also use the stylist wheel to control the brush size Now. Generally, you're not going to use all of these options available. Excepto options. Either the pen pressure or just turn it off. That's it. Okay, these controls the minimum size off the brush, the angle jitter well, randomized the angle off the brush tip. To see this effect, we need to pick another brush tip. Let's speak the lift brush tip again. Notice. As I direct this value, the orientation off each brush tip will be randomized. We can control the angle with this option in here. Most off these auditions are the same except several off them. The rotation is based on your pen rotation. Currently, I cannot show you this feature as my old welcome tablet does not support penalty ation. Next is the initial direction and direction. Let's see the direction first with direction turned on. If he drove like this, notice the orientation. Always follow the direction off where we moved to brush. If we set this to initial direction, it will only detect the first direction and stick with it across the brush stroke. I think until now you should already understand the core concept off how brush settings work. I will skip this roundness setting on. Move on to the last setting, which is scattering. Scattering is basically the randomness off brush position. As we can see. When I increased this value more off this brush, images are getting spread out from its original location. By default, the skater works perpendicular to the brush stroke direction, so it only happens this way. Not this way. But if you under scattering toe happens this way also, then you can turn on this both access option of here. The control option is basically the same with previous settings. The Khan value in here determine how many brush images coming out at a time by default it this one image at a time. If we set this to to, for example, we will have more dense result is the brush toe generates twice the image than before at random position. The bottom part control the conjurer value and the control of it. Now for the rest off the brush. Say things. You can experiment with them and see what kind off brush effect you can create. You need to be aware that although having a lot of dynamics with your brush a school and sometimes speed up your growing process, but it will burden your computer performance, especially if you are working with high resolution image and you use large size brushes. In this scenario, you may experience legs or latency, so keeping the brush settings to minimum dynamics is always a good idea. That is why, in his course, we try to make our brush is as simple as it can, but still functioning as we hope for. We're going to discuss custom brush creation in the next video
22. Custom brush: creating brush in photo shop is actually very simple. All you need to do is draw the shape, then selected and then define it as a brush. Let's see how we can do this. For example, we want to create a brush that looks like a generic leaf. Let's create a new layer force just political tour. Make sure it is settle path, then create an ellipse like so goto mental by oppression Letter B and then hold out and click on this node to confirm it toe a corner point. Now hold control, then wrecked this handle slightly to the left while doing so. Hold shift so the movement is constrained, or recently, and this one also next. Just select both off this anchor points and move it slightly to the left. Also, if you want, you can watch them. And that is using the left arrow in a keyboard presents A for our times until you like how the ship looks press control, Enter to convert it into a selection. Now go to the Grady in Tool Press D to make the color default so we have black color in the foreground color. Just the second Grady in color precept, which is foreground to transparent, preset Klay and hold in here moved amounts to the left while holding shift So the Grady in is straight horizontally. Then release the mouse. Now, while we still have the selection like this, Goto added menu and choose this command. Define brush preset named the brush toe. Any name you want I'll never it here live generic A. Okay, Our newly created brush is no active Go to brush tool and then opened a brush panel. If we go to brush tip shape up here As we can see, we already have the brush deep inside the brush presets we know and currently it is active . With this brush, we want to create only one leave Each time we drove the brush in canvas. So for the spacing we wanted toe have large value. Let's just make it 500%. Okay, Now go to ship dynamics and in the angle control, choose direction. This will make the brush tip shape the Orian to our stroke direction later for the size deter. Let's make it 20% for the minimum die matter. Make it when the person also, if you look at the trans. For dynamics this option control the opacity based on the pen pressure. Now go to transfer dynamics. Make sure the opacity control is said toe pen pressure and minimum opacity is set to 20%. Now this opacity settings will not work correctly if opacity off right button in the option panel is on, so make sure this is turned off. If this is on any value we put in the minimum value, we always go back to zero. Okay, now, if he drove or stroke like this in a canvas, we get one live like. So if you like. How do brush behaves? Remember to save the brush settings. Otherwise, if we just another brush, the settings will be gone forever. To save the brush, simply go to the brush panel and click this button down here that say's new brush preset type, the same name that we have before auto brush. It's now safe to see all of the brush precept we can go to brush presets. We know this is our new brush that we have just created this all the aversion off the brush is not needed anymore, so let's remove it fried. Click on it and choose the lit brush. Click the OK button. We can use this brush toe quickly and leave details. Toe a tree drawing. In this example, I already draw three. The process is identical to how we create the airplane. Now, using our lift brush, create a new layer, press out and clicking here to pick the color. From that point, let's make the color brighter, and I just brush like these to create the leaves. Details on this three illustration. Let's create another custom brush example. For this example, we're going to create a colorful balloon brush. Let's open the brush panel in a brush tip shape. Select the round harp H brush, then said the size to a 60 big sauce. Make the wrongness toe. About 80%. Make the spacing toe a very high value. Around 250% will do great. Go to ship dynamics and make the angle Deter. 100% Turn off the control in a scattering category. Changed a skater value toe 500%. Then this is the most important part to make our brush colorful goto color dynamics and said the huge ITER value to maximum 100%. Make sure the other dynamics are off as we don't need them. Now pick any color that has high situation. I'll take a red color in here. Create a new layer. Change the brush size as you like. What is when I brush like these? We get colorful balloon shapes or Candies. That is, if you want to create Kendis Now, when creating these shapes, try to avoid touching or offer lapping shapes because it will be harder to create the highlights later. If the shapes are touching together, you can create different layer for each stroke. If you need to avoid or flipping shapes for row are just use one layer and try to make the shapes number low to avoid. Offer lapping. Okay, now go to the layer style and ed Careful and ambush style said the soft in value to maximum , said the light position Toby around here. Okay, now, if we want to make balloons, we can reduce the opacity toe 80%. The last step is to add highlights on the drawing. We can create a new layer, hold control and clicking here to extract them into a new selection. Now we want to make the selection a bit round and smaller. So go to the select menu. Modify smooth. Try 20 pixels for now. Okay, I think it looks smoother. Now. Go to select menu again. Modify juice contract and type in 15 pixels. This will strain the selection 15 pick sauce. So we have smaller selection. Radiance. Make sure the background color is white. Then he'd controlled lead toe. Feel these selection with white color. Use the move toe to move it up a bit and slightly to the left. You can adjust your capacity again if you like. If you are satisfied with this brush and want to save it, just click this. Create new brush button and named the brush toe balloon, for example. Okay, so that is how you create custom brush and saving it as a brush preset and also some practical usage off using custom brush
23. Tool preset: we have talked about brush presets and then brush presets. Now we're going to talk about something that is above brush hierarchy, and that will be the two presets. The diagram. It's like this brush tips is at the lowest hierarchy. Basically, it only contains the information about the tip shape off the brush. We can find a brush the precept inside the brush panel when we opened the brush tip shape category in here. So this is the brush tip. The next level of hierarchy is the brush presets. Brush presets contain brush tip and other bunch off informations related to the brush dynamics. Basically anything that you set up in a brush panel in here, Can we save as a brush preset? The brush presets itself can be accessed from this brush preset panel or when we use the brush tool and do rightly we actually opens up the brush presets panel. Another way to access the brush presets is from the option panel up here as we have discussed before. Okay, what we're going to discuss in this video is the upper hierarchy off the brush preset. We just the two presents two presets can contain information off the brush, plus, with all of the settings off here in the option panel and also the colors if you want to save them. Also so again, basically to precept will self to brush, tip the brush settings and the settings in the option panel up here and plus optionally the colors to save the tool settings as a tool precept. We need to open the to present window and then click this create new toe precept button. Don't here, or you can actually save it from this boudin panel in here at the option panel and click on this button. As we can see, this pull down panel is actually the tool preset panel just like this one. After you click on that button, you will be prompted for a name. I actually don't want to save any two settings for now, so I click this cancel button. Now you need to understand the tool presets is actually not just for brush tool. Basically, any tool inside photo shop can be saved as to preset, so you can save those settings for marquee selection, toe crop, toe eraser tool, a cetera. Any tools in a photo shop can be saved as a tool preset. We'll cover the brush to appreciate in this lesson, and later in the next video, we will create tool presets for Eraser Tool and Smart Tool. Now let's discuss what are the parameters that can be stored inside a tool preset if we are using the brush tool. If we have a brush to active, we can see the blending mode up here in the option panel. Now this planning more in here is different with the blending mode we see in the layer panel. This blending mode controls how to brush behave when painted on top off existing pixels, so the effect only happened in a single layer, not multiple layer. For example, I'll use simple round brush in here. The color from the swatches panel had some brush strokes in here. Now, if I change the color and pain, it will just cover the previous pixels. This is due to the blending mode in here is set to normal now what? When I change these to multiply, for example, the previous peak sauce will still be feasible but darker. If your screen and then stroke like these, anything touch will become brighter so bad is how brush blending mode works. Typically, I stay away from brush blending mode and make use off the layer blending mode instead. Because I always dro shedding on separate layers. We'll discuss about this more in depth when creating the character illustration project. We've talked about capacity before, so you should already understand that this opacity of value in here controls how Lopate the brush will be. But we haven't really discussed the flow value. So what is flow actually to make things simple? Flow controls how much capacity each image generated by the brush in a given time, while opacity controls the whole transparency off the resulting pixels globally at a glance , they are similar, but they are not. If using opacity, for example, 30% press D to get a black color. When I grow like these, as long as I hold the mounts or pressing the pen, I cannot build up the strokes toe pure black. The only way to get black or full opacity is to release and stroke again multiple times again. You cannot build upto black color with a single stroke. As for a shop will kept it at 30% opacity. Now let's switch the setting, said the opacity toe 100% and flow to 30%. Watch as I stroke the brush like these. Even if I do this in a single stroke, I haven't released my pen. I can build up the color toe black. OK, so clearly see what flow value. Actually, due to our brush, we need tohave hard brush tip. Let's set the float 100% 1st By the way, the shortcut to change the flow value is holding Schiff and in fresh numbers key on the keyboard to get 10% flow. For example, whole Chief and embraced one to get 50% flow value co chief and impressed five. So it is like the opacity shortcut. But you've seen the shift key modifier. If you don't hold shift, it will change the opacity fl you instead. Okay, let's get back to our main discussion now Maybe opacity toe 100% by pressing zero Kino keyboard. Then hold Schiff and zero to make the flow Also 100%. Now, if we grow like these, as we can see, they are very thick. If I change the flow to 10% This is how it looks like. So each brush tip generated by the brush tool will have 10% opacity because it only controls each brush image, not the whole stroke. We can build up the image to black in a single stroke. Opacity Valley, on the other hand, controls the whole stroke capacity globally. Let's change the opacity toe 20% and flow to 100%. So I repeat, we have 20% opacity now and 100% flow. OK, notice as I brush and move this around, we cannot see each brush tip generated by the brush because the opacity works on the whole stroke. Therefore, we cannot build up color in a single stroke. You need to do multiple strokes in orderto buildup. Okay, Now the big question is, which one should we used? Opacity or flow? Well, it really depends on your preferences. If you are like me, I tend to do brush release brush release movement as this give more room to the undue system so I can carefully go back and forth in time later if I made a mistake, because off these are prefer using opacity, not flow. But if you like to direct the brush and keep adding colors in a single stroke. Then you should go with the flow. Go with the flow. Yeah. Okay, guys, that is the difference between opacity and flow. For the rest off the lesson, I'll be using opacity instead of flow to create all off my brush presets. Well, all except one brush setting, which is for pencil. But mostly I use opacity. You can later replaced the opacity value control toe flow fail you control for your own brush. Just try them out and see which one you like. The less option panel settings we're going to discuss are these toggle buttons. We've discussed some off them already, but let's review all off them again. Right now, this button will override the brush setting, so our pen pressure will dictate the opacity to see this in action. Let me open a brush panel. Make sure the transfer category in here is off. Because in the transfer category, we have control for a porosity value. Okay, so just make sure it is turned off, as we can see. Although I press the pen in varying pressure, you opacity looks the same. Now watch as I click this toggle button, we can see in the brush panel the transfer category become active and the opacity control issues ng pen pressure. Now, if I click in here again, it is off. Okay, so that is what the button actually do under the hood. It's overriding the opacity control in a brush setting. Next is this toggle button. Now this one will offer right the brush size control. If I stroke like this, nothing happens. I mean, the brush size or the stroke with are all uniform notice. If I click the struggle button up here, what will happen in a brush setting? The ship dynamics turned on and the size is now controlled by the pen pressure. Now, if I draw like these with different pressure level, we can get variable with a stroke. The less Togo button is the airbrush buildup style button. If we turn this on, it will overwrite this wilt up, setting in a brush panel what it does. It will make our brush behave like an airbrush, meaning. If you press and hold your mouse or your pen, the color will build up just like an airbrush in the real world behaves. If we spray with a really airbrushed in the same spot, cholera or pains will build up in that location. So for those of you who are familiar with airbrush and already comfortable painting with airbrush, you may want to use this feature. Okay, now, for this airbrush style toe actually works, you need to have the flow value below 100%. Why? Because at 100% the colors will already built up in the first click or stroke. So there is nothing you can wilt up anymore. Let's speak a software on brush. For now, Lower the flow. I'll set it to 20% and make sure the airbrush button is on. When we click and hold like these, we can see the colors are building up gradually.
24. Basic tool presets: in this video, we're going to set up our tools using the tool preset in photo shop, abusing basic round brush tip for the whole tours. It's not that I forbid you from using other brush tips, such as the dynamic bristle brush or any custom image brush. No, not at all. In fact, I suggest you to play around and experiments with those broad steps. I use only the round brush steps in his cars because I want to make this course simple and easy to follow. Also, the round rusty, based on my experience, is the less demanding but our steps in term of computer performance. So for students who have lower spec machines can follow along without any problems. And the third reason is creating a very specific customized brush, not always work for everyone. If we create a custom brush, then that brush should work for us. As expected, it fits our workflow and it fits our illustration style. But that brush might be useless for other people, which prefer different workflow are different style. So having just a regular generate a round brush will make sure that it will work perfectly for everyone. Okay, let's open the to appreciate panel. Now, before we begin creating two presets by default for a shop will show a lot off their fault presets in here, which we don't really need. If we turn off this current tool only option, we get to see even more tool presets. We want to get rid all of these presets so we can concentrate only with our two presents. Don't worry. We can always bring back the default presets later. Although I doubt we ever need them again. Now you can select one off the preset, then click this trash Aiken to delete the current tool. But you can only do this one at the time. It will be inconvenient. Dream of a lot of two presets like these to remove all of them at once. We can click on this option I can in here Jews preset manager. Click on one off this preset, then press control a selector more and then click this delete button and we are done. Okay. The 1st 2 brushes we're going to create will be used mainly in sketching process. First the pencil A brush for a shop actually has a pencil tool. If you press and hold the brush toe. We can see the pencil tool in here. It is like the brush tool birth with so many limitation. As you can see up here at the option panel, we don't have any control for flow nor option for airbrush style. So basically, we're not going to use dispensable tool and prefer the brush tool instead. Okay, go to the brush tool Opened the brush panel Selective default around deep. Either this one or this one will do no problem. Then in the size input, make it 10 pixels, these real beautiful size. And of course, we can always change the size later when using this brush. So again, this failure will not be a dead value. Change the hardness toe. 50% said the spacing to 40%. Okay, next go to ship dynamics category. Make sure the size is controlled by the pen pressure. Max. The trans for category change the flow to be controlled by pen pressure. Next, don't Here, you'll see smoothing option. Basically, this option will make our stroke drawing smoother. This can be very helpful if we have a train more hen. I always turn this option on for all of my custom brushes. Next, change the opacity up here. So 70% and finally that's opened a color picker and choose grayscale color with 20% for the brightness to self days. As a tool preset, we can open the 2% window and then click on this new toe preset button. Turn on include color option in here. Name these toe pencil. I like to call it We d underscore pencil in here because I want to differentiate my tool from the rest of the two preset in photo shop. Just in case I don't loaded another tool presets or low the default presets Again, with prefix name like this, it won't be a problem finding my tool presets again later. You can use your own name as prefix if you want. Oh, okay. Now that we have our pencil brush finished, let's move on to the ing brush. The ng brush is used for sketching. Also disliked a pencil brush. The difference is the in brush will use full of black color just like the thing in the real world. We can use this brush if we need to stroke an outline from a path Also, we can do quick fix toe outlines with this brush if we need to. Okay, So to create the ink brush, simply choose the round hard H brush, and that will be this brush. Go to the brush panel. Change the size toe. 15 big sauce, turn on size. Control up here. Change the opacity to 100%. And there you go. We have the ink brush. Save the school present. Turn off. Include color on Let's name it Inc as before are nameless, weedy underscore ing just so I can differentiate this brush with other Photoshopped toe presets in this section, we're going to prepare all of the tools for adding depth to our illustration. There are three main tools for this. The shed tool, which will be used for adding smooth gradation off colors useful for shading and highlights detail. Brush, which we can use to add texture, cracks, grout and all detail. Related graphic elements. Toe are illustration and the last one is so much brush where we can use to drink around and blur pick sauce useful to add. Final touches are fixed to our growing okay, so let's focus on a shed brush first. This is the main brush we're going to use to shape our growing to create this shed toe crease. Here, make sure we are in a brush tool just the rounds off brush. Let's go to the brush panel. Change the size toe. 150 pixels go up to the option panel. Change the opacity to 20% and, in turn on the opacity. Been pressure control in here, and that's it for our shed brush. For the simple right self. This as a to precept name it. Shed our name mind, toe reedy, underscore shade. Next is the detail brush. The main idea off the detail brush is to complement the shade brush. The said brush is a brush, which its opacity can be controlled by the pen pressure, and the size is relatively large and fixed. The detail brush, on the other hand, is small, and a pen pressure will control its size, not its opacity, so rightly. And let's speak a hard H brush. Order soft brush. Go to the brush panel, open the brush tip category. Change the size to 25 pixels, change the hardness value to 50%. Click this size control up here and make the opacity to 20%. See if the tool turn off include color. Name it detail Max. Is this much brush for this brush? We actually don't use the brush tool but used this much tool in here rightly and choose the rounds off brush preset. Go to the brush panel. Change the size to 70 pixels partners to 10% and spacing to 40% in your ocean panel, said the strength to 30% and turn on the size control. Next, we need to turn on scattering. Based on my experience. The smarts tool is designed more to drag picks us around, not for blurring big sauce. We actually need the blurring behavior more than Pixar dragging behavior. The scattering effect off the brush can really help to blur the pig sauce. So said the Jeter toe. 10% said control by Ben Pressure and said the Count Toto on. That's it. Let's save the stool as a to precept. Name it smart. As we can see, the icon in here is different from the rest off the 2% because these other tools are brush tools. Well, this one is much tool Now, if you see something like these, most likely you turn on this option Currently on Lee. Just make sure this option is off so we can see all of the two presets, not just the presets related to the active toe. The last type off to preset we need for our workflow are the racers. We need to type off the razor's the heart brushy razor that we can use to erase outlines or mistakes fast and a soft brush razor that we can use to reduce shadings or highlights gradually. Okay, let's create the heart Eraser force. Go to the eraser tool, right click and just the round heart brush. Now, before we continue, Eraser tool actually has different engine in here. We have brush, engine, benzo and block. You might be tempted to use block or pencil for heart eraser, but notice both block and pencil mode will have no pixel anti l using. We can see this jagged peaks us like this. This is school and needed if you are doing pixel art. But we're not going to create pixel artwork in our final project, so we will stick with the brush mode. OK, go to the brush panel. Change the size toe 30 big sauce. Turn on smoothing. Make sure the opacity and the flow are all set to 100% on That's it. Safety's toe to preset. Name it. Eraser. Underscore heart. I am using my name as the prefix as always. Finally, we're going to create the soft razor, right Click in just around soft brush preset for start Change the size toe 100 pixels. Make sure the smoothing is active, said the opacity toe 50% and turn on the opacity. Pen control in here. Go toe to present window safe this tool and name it Eraser underscore soft And finally we have all of the tools that we need for our workflow. If you want to change this ordering, we can use the preset manager again. So go to option preset manager. In this panel, we can direct the precept to any location in lease for me. I will order this based on the chronological process, so pencil should be at the top than ink below it. We should have shade detail and smart at the very bottom we want tohave the Eurasia tools. Your heart razor is on top of the soft eraser. Now you can organize them to your own liking. There is no right or wrong about the tool ordering. Take the done button after finished reordering the presets. If you like all off these two presets and want to save them in external file so later we can use them in other computer or share them with your team. You can go to the option menu again and click these safe toe precept button. You can name me to any name you want. The file extension for these two presets will be in dot TPL format. If later you want to load them, you can go to the option menu again and just load to presets in here and just the file you want load for these two presets, it is included in the project files in his scores, so we can simply don't look them and use it right away.
25. Sketching: starting this section, we're going to draw this illustration off a character from start to finish now. You might already see these character design at the beginning off the course, but currently, when I record a video, I have no idea off what the final output will be. I just have an abstract images in my mind off how the character will look like at the end. The first step off making any drawing is sketching, sketching Help us to shape and refine our abstract ideas. So let's just get started. Jews, new file and, as always, for our course, we're going to use film and video precept category and use this HDTV 10 80 p present for sketching. We're going to use a new layer, so we're not going to draw directly in a bigger on layer. Open the tool preset and use our pencil a brush to present for a character. We're going to make a stylized or cartoony style character so the head will be way bigger compared to its body. These will be the legs. I want to make the fit small for the upper arm. It showed rice a bit. It will carry a blade at this site off the arm. The blade will go this way. The character also will have a shield in its left arm. We won't be able to see the left arm as the shield is large. The shields ship will be around. Now let's focus on the head. First, the character will have a gas mask. The site off the mask should be tilted like these. This is the mouth area. I imagine that our character live in an environment after a nuclear war. It has a lot off radiation and also poisonous guesses. So against mosque is needed to survive. This area will be the respirator. I was thinking Darth Vader's helmet for a respirator, but the ice area? It's more like a welding safety goggle for the hair. We're going to make the hair long and be shipped like fire, more or less like characters. Hair in Reagan balls Comic. Okay, the character will have a leather gloves in here. We're going tohave the handcuff for From the Blade. This will be the town finger. This will be the sort handle. Later, we'll make part off the Swart, glowing just like the Star Wars light sabers. Let's dough the shoulder armor in here, we'll add Spike on the armor as it has already become Standard toe have spikes on post nuclear war character design. We will have armor also in front off his body. Just a simple square metal plate with leather straps. Let's move on to the legs area. We'll add genetic boots in this part. I want to add a chrome metallic plate. The left leg will also have the metallic plate. This will be the pans. The ship is simple, inspired by dragon balls costume. This will be the shield. There is an outer frame around. The shield will add four triangular ornaments around the shield. This ornaments later will glow just like the front off the blade. - The hair will have two layers does so we have more shapes. Toe. Add shading later. Okay, guys, the sketch is finished. I can still refined the lines here and there. With the awful structure is done, I will we find the lines off the record so you don't get bored and we will continue in the next video where we do dressing and coloring process
26. Tracing: Let's continue our project. This is the sketch we have from the previous lesson. You might notice that I have refined the lines here and there. Now let's make the drawing bigger control. T toe access the three times from Tool. Make the image bigger, then use the crop tool so we have less negative space in our composition. Just drag this handle until we see if it press enter to confirm next. When dressing the drawing with a pen tool, you really don't want to be distracted by the sketch lines. So pick the schedule earlier and turned on this opacity value to 20%. And to make our file more organized, let's rename our sketch layer to sketch. We want to lock this layer from accidental transformation or any piece or changes. Okay, let's zoom in a bit. We are going to use the pen to now, so press B are a press this button and then just stopped drawing the path like this. Just follow the contour off the hair. - Okay , then we're going to draw the mosque path, clicking here quick tracking here. Then hold out. Move the handle This way. Big Dragon here, then click in here. Next. We'll continue from the spine. Click drinking here. Click in here. Clicking here, Quick dragon Here, then In here. Now we need to adjust this points position. Okay? I think I need to add a point in here. So we have a bit off curve just like the last one. Adjust the left also. Okay, let's move on to the eye socket. In here. League in here. Quick, direct. Like this. Click in here. Click in here. Click drag like these. Click in here and finally click on the first point to close the path. Now we need to align this line and this line. So I think we need to fix this point position for the mouth area that's clicking here. First click drag like soul believed racking here and click dreck again. Clicking here and close the path. Dinner ship off the mouth is pretty similar Clicking here. Click Drag, click, Drag, click, drag. Click in here and close the bath. Okay. We can hide the sketch layer to see how the path looks like without any distraction. I think I need to adjust these points Our speed up the video for now. Okay, I think this is good enough. I think this point need to go slightly to the right. We can just speak the point and press right a row in a keyboard to nudge it. Okay. Next. We want to add the bolts. Starting from this one. Used a circle shaped tool. Create a circle path like these, then press control. T quote It is a bit to the right. Press. Enter Tokyo police circle to the bottom. We can actually do this in several ways. We can press control, see? And then control V. We know actually have two paths in the same location. Drag it down and move it to this location. So, like, both off this path and control, see? Then control the again and move it. Okay, guys, I change my mind. Let me delete this one first. Let's just focus on this one. Movie toe disposition, control T and rotated. Like so. Okay. Another way to duplicate the path is by holding out before dragging the path. Notice. We have this plus sign on the car, sir. Just drag to move the path. We will have a new path duplicated from the original path we select before place it down here. Okay, Now we have something like this for the mouth area. We want to use direct angle tool to create the respirator holes quick drag to draw the rectangle path like these control t to rotate the path and just move it like so press enter to confirm. And I think I want to check this. Don't show again. Check box as it gets annoying toe. Have this show up all the time. I'll drag this path to copy it to the left side than another one for the right side. Okay, I think the head area is finished. The last thing we need to do is story, name or path layer. As you mentioned earlier, it is dangerous to store our paths in the warpath layer. So double click and rename it to any name you want. I'll name it outline and let's move on toe, creating the paths for the other areas. Now, for the other areas, the process will be fairly identical. So I would just speed up the video. - Okay , guys, finally, we have all of the paths needed to block out the base color for our character design. We will continue on blocking and coloring process in the next video
27. Coloring: This is what we have from our previous lesson. Before we do any coloring, we should change the background color. Why do we need to do this? Because coloring with pure white color background well tend to make us pick and use bright color. Also, our drawing will look good on white or bright color break ground. But when placed on top off black or dark obey ground, it will look too bright to help us big neutral colors. We need to make the background colors at mid range brightness, so let's click on a bigger on layer. Open a color picker. Final minute brightness range for the color. I want to use a sigh in color. I think this color will be nice. Click OK, then press out the elite to fill the layer with the current foreground color. Okay, now, in this area, we want to add a spotlight area. Just imagine we have a light source from this location, a spotlight lamp shining to this area. Let's speak the shade brush for this notice. This brush tip is to round that's fix this by going to the brush panel and changed the roundness to 50% This were squashed. The brush tip shape, toe horizontal, elliptical shape. Make the brush size bigger. Change the opacity toe 10% by pressing one in a keyboard for a color. Let's speak yellowish off white color and then just brush these several times like this. Okay, I think this is good enough. Now let's add color to our character, drawing in here for coloring. We want to create each color shape on its own separate layer. So, for example, in layer one, we're going to add color for the boots, then a new layer for a boots plate, not a layer for the pans, so on and so forth. The purpose off this method is that later we will combine all of these layers into a smart object. Any time we want to change the ship color, we can simply double click on a smart object and change any color. Known destructively, this is important in design face, where we want to have freedom to experiment with different color schemes. We don't degrading the pixels. Let's just see how we can do this. Go to the back panel and click on this layer. Press A to use the path selection tool and then select this booth path holds Chief and this boot path. Also right. Click and just make a selection. Click OK. Open the color picker by Oppressing Z, which is our custom keyboard shortcut for foreground color picker. Pick a dark brown letter. Okay, then press out the lead toe, colorize the selection. Next, create another layer on top off the boot layer. Goto path clear again. So, like the boot played pats with the path selection tool. Right leak. Make selection and pick a bright gray color and feel the selection with the current color. Okay, now the boot plate has around balls on it. So go to path again and select the bolt path. Make selection. Don't forget to create a new layer for it and pick a brighter fashion off the less directed gray color and fill out the selection. That is basically the process. I'll speed up the video as things get to repair that if now for the shield area. I want to explain a little trick to the selection for these triangular elements, so we already have this layer for the area off the shield. Now let's create a new earlier for the inner color off the shield. Select the path, make selection and pick our dark gray color, perhaps towards the blue color. Okay, out the lead. So we have this rock circle in this layer. Now, here is the trick. I want to show you while we have this elliptical selection active, we can go to the path and select the path. Oh, sorry. Let me create a new raster layer first, just to be safe. Okay, we can select this triangle shape. Path holds Schiff and this one and this one and this one. Now, when we right click and juice makes election to us intersect option in here. This way, the resulting selection will intersect with the current political selection we have in here . So when we hit the okay button, we get this nice selection off the triangular elements off the shield for the color. We want this area at the shield, Toby glowing along with the front off the blade. Just make sure again. We have a new layer selected press Z and pick on almost white color, but slightly to the right. Okay. Press out. Delete toe. Feel the color. Later, this layer will be put on top off everything. And this layer will be the same layer for holding the glow color from the blade. Okay, guys, the rest off the process will be mostly identical. So I will just speed up the video for now. Just make sure we have different layer for each off the color shape. We can adjust the layer staking order as we see fit. Okay, Until this point, we have all off the color created in each independent layer. Now we need to combine all off this layers toe a single smart object layer to do that, select the bottom layer. Make sure we don't take the sketch layer. Scroll up, hold shift and click on the top layer. This will get all off the layers that we need selected, then right clicking here and choose comfort, too. Smart object we know have a single smart object. Leah renamed is Toby, which is a shorthand for based color. You can name it to any name you want as long you'll understand later that the layer is indeed contained. Based color information. Now the cult ing about the set up. Any time we need to change the color for example, we want to change the color off the pans. We can double click on the smart object Lee or Stomp Nail in here for a shop will open a new file tab for a content off that smart object. And then we can use the most tool. Make sure the auto select option in here is active. Then click on the plans. Noticed the pants layer will get selected automatically in the layer panel. We can re color the pens with different methods, but for quick, nondestructive way, we can double click on it and use the color overly layer style. Then you can change the color by clicking on this button and pick any color for example, orange or any other color that you like. After changing the color, we can click the OK button I click. Cancel Now is I don't really need to change the color. And finally, this is important. If you need to save the changes when we close the file, make sure you save it when prompted by for a shop. If you say that you will see the changes that we have made when we are back in our main file for example, the pants in here will be orange If we did confirm the color and safe the smart object file before. Okay, guys. So that is how we can create non destructive coloring workflow in photo shop. It's a lot off work, but you'll get the benefit off optimum flexibility in term, off color changes later down the road. In the next video, we'll start discussing on a shading process.
28. Local shading: we have something like this from the previous lesson before moving on toe shedding process . Let's add some detail toe all drawing Now This process can be used to add textures such as fabric, texture, metal Russ Thanks, general leather texture at CETRA but for now are just add lines in the front off body armor and also lines in the characters right hand, which is left from our point of view to add the details or tax generous. Let's create a new layer renamed the layer toe T, which is a shorthand for textures, then cleared the layer to the base layer. Okay, Now go towpath panel, press a and pick this one. Oh, sorry. Let's define our brush for us. So, like the into preset in here, make the brush size smaller. Then choose a color. Make it dark gray color with a bit off bluish tone. Okay, I think the size off the brush is already good. Now press A to use the path selection tool. All Schiff on days like this one. And this one also now rightly in choose stroke sub paths. Select brush and turn off. Simulate pressure option. Click the OK button. Okay, now for the fingers. Let's speak or dark brown color. We can just speak it from this area. Press be to access the brush tool and make the brush size smaller. Okay, press a and that's like these two lines in here. And just like before, right, click and stroke sub pats toothbrush. Okay, now, if we click in here to hide the paths, we want to remove the excessive lines. We can use a lot of methods for these, but for now, I'll just use simple ass or selection tool Select like these and hit the lead just toe the same thing with the other excessive lines. I'll speed up the video and move on to shedding face. After we have the details or the textures ready, the next step will be to add shading to our drawing for these less at a new layer. Namie Toe L, which is a shorthand for local shading, clip the layer to the base layer and for shedding layer. We always wanted to be in multiply mode. Before we create any shading, we might want to lock the textual a year so it is safe from accidental changes locket from peaceful changes and from transformation. We want to lock the base color layer also from accidental transformation. Now, because the base color layer is a smart object layer and we can never pain on smart object layer, it is already locked from peace or changes. Now this is important. As we're going to move back and forth between this layer and this layer, we can use our custom marker a shortcut we created previously in welcome set up less and video. So if you press the down layer express key, we can select the bottom layer and at the same time, change the active tool to magic One tool. When you see the magic one tool for our workflow, make sure toe have low tolerance value such as six or two as we have in here. In this condition, we can select any coloration in the base color layer easily. And if we click the our Player Express Kena welcome tablet twice. So we are in the local layer. Now we can see automatically. The brush tool gets like that. So again, pressing up earlier express key will select upper layer and change the active tool to brush and pressing. Don't layer express key will select lower layer and make the magic oneto active. This is our secret weapon off speed painting. Okay, for shading, we have key light source from this position the upper left area and from this area we will have backlighting light source. So later we will create shadow on the floor which is the product off the key light source and also later beside the key light and the back life we'll have another light source is from the glowing blade and a shield. But these lights will not be that strong, so it should not affect the offer or shedding now. Ideally, when shading, we need to pick the base color and then make it darker. These real produce more vivid shading color. However, for now, I will use only black for all of the shading color, just to making faster. Okay, make sure we used to share to preset. Remember the light. Sources from here draw light brush stroke like this and more brush strokes to this direction, so the bottom right area it's more darker. Next, let's add context. Shadows between the main mosque toe the respirator area for these when it's smaller, brush and just draw like this and make the brush smaller again as we want to add some contact shadows for the bolts. Okay, we have something like this. Now let's at shading to the goggles area. Go down with the Wycombe Express key. So, like this area, go up again with the express key, make the brush size larger and just shared this area with several light strokes. Okay, Now notice. In this area, we get this Jagger or pixelated border area between the main mosque and a respirator region . Now, they should not be a problem if we have higher resolution image such as for KP sauce. But for medium resolution, like we have here, you'll get jagged lines. Problem here and there to fix this. This is what the so much to present is far. Just make the brush size smaller and stroke on this border area like this. So this is how you fix the border problem? Let's work on the mouth area like this region holds chief and this one and this one and so on until we have all of them so like, to go back up again. That's at shading at the top area and then the sites and about, um, we can use the smart tool again by oppressing us for a short cut and just smooth out these borders. Okay, guys, for now, I'm going to focus on adding shades color to the awful drawing and worry about this border , smoothing later. Okay, let's add shading on the bolts. The process will be identical, so I'll just speed up the video for the awful hair. Shading is the same. Okay, for reading detail shadings to the hair area, we're going to use a different approach. We're going to create a custom selection force and then draw the shading color. Using that selection region, you can create the selection using last so poorly lasso or create a path with a pen tool than conferred toe selection, as we've discussed before. For now, we just use the polygonal lasso tool with help off out modifier key to draw curves. Okay, after we have selection like these, press be to use the brush tool and just shared it like this, we can then press us to use the smudge tool to smooth out the ages for the rest off the hair detail and also for the rest off the body. The shading processes are fairly similar, so I would just speed up the video
29. Global shading: okay, After we have all off the local shedding drone, we are going to move on to the global shading. The difference between global and local in my own term is this local shading our shadow cholera which exists in each coloration and contact shadows which generally exists in corners and crevices. While global shading is where we create castle Che does that is shadows from one object that falls onto other objects. Now you don't need to separate the CDO's. You can just create all of these local and global shadows in a single layer if you want. Oh, but personally, I like to have more control later on global shade or behavior such as re color them or intensify them or any other tweaks I may need afterwards. So that is why I use differently or for the global shading. Also, if you are familiar with three D rendering composition, you should know already that indirect shadows and direct shadows are usually happen in separate pass in direction. Does is identical with our term off local shading and direction. A does is identical. Our term off global shady Okay, so let's create a new layer rename it G for global shading. Quick mask the layer and change the blending mode to multiply. Okay, we already know that we have the key light source from this location. The objects, for example, the had we'll be casting shadows to the bottom right area. This armor piece, for example, will be casting shadows to this area. Okay, Basically, the processes like this we create a selection and draw the shadow in that selection. We've used Holy Lasso tool before. Now let's use the pen tool for this clicking here, then in here and then just move on. We really need to use our imagination here. In here. We need toe make off like this. It is easy now that we have the pen tool, click track like this, and then just continue to confront the path to a selection. Became press control. Enter for a shortcut. Okay, Now we want to clean up the selection from unwanted region. We can go down with the express key. Oh, sorry, guys, just to play safe. Let's lock this local shading layer first so nothing will happen to it. Okay, So, like, this layer and press w our click this button, you can do this also with our welcome express key. Now press and hold the rt and clicking here and in here, in here and finally this front hair area. So we have this clean selection region like this. Now go back up. I'm using the express key now. Jews shared tool preset for the global shadow. I actually want to use non black color. I'll pick a dark blue color for now on brush it several times. So we have something like this. You might be wondering by now why blue color? Well, the shadow color really depends on the environment. So if you have, for example, poisonous forests as the environment, you might want tohave green color instead for the shadow color. But really, these colors are all up to you guys. There is no right or wrong. I'm the showing you the possibilities that you can do with our workflow here. Okay, For the rest of the process, I would just speed up the video s. There is really nothing new to discuss. And I'll see you in the next video where we will add highlights to our drawing
30. Highlights: let's continue our project. In this lesson, we're going toe and highlights to our growing. For these, let's create a new layer renaming toe H for highlights. Clip the layer and change the blending mode to screen as highlight colors should make any colors below it brighter. Now we're going to cover so far or different techniques. Then after that, I'll speed up the video asked. The rest off. The process will use the same techniques explained previously for the hair. Let's speak the mental and Roche it like this. The pentacle is perfect for this job as the hair shapes are smooth curves which is very hard to create. If we only use the police lasso tool or the lasso tool, I'll just speed up the video for now. Okay, now press control enter to convert the path into selections for her speculators are used white color, pick the shit tool preset and just do suffer or strokes like this. So we have nice color gradation. I want to make the center area toe have the brightest color. Okay, that is one technique we can use for ending highlights. We just basically using the pen tool next less and highlights or speculative on the eyeglass for these Ah, will you Simple Polly lasso selection technique when creating another selection. Remember? Toe hold shift modifier key first. So the new selection will add to the existing selection. Okay. Use the shit to preset and just stroke like this. The center should have stronger color. Okay, I think I want to add another highlight in here. Now I need to make the glass brighter at the left area. So go down the layer with our experts key. Select the glass area, go up again, make the brush bigger and just brush it like this. Next. We want to add highlights on the bolt. For this I need to pick a new color that speak a color similar with the base mosque. But make it brighter and without using any selection, just use the brush tool, toe pain. The highlights like this. Okay, let's and highlights color on this respirator area for these. Let's go down the layer with the express key. So like this area go up again? Oh yes. Guys are forgot to lock the global shading layer. Just lock both the transform in the pixels. The local layer is already locked. So we are good to go. Go back to highlight Slayer. Now, for this, I'll be using big brush and make it smaller. Gradually, Asai stroke the brush. The less rage in we're going to discuss is the eyeglass area. We're going to create a custom selection and reduce it with the magic one tool selection. So to spoil the lasso tool, create a selection like these. Okay, Now go down the layer us dramatic one tool. Hold out and click on this Radian. Go back up. And just Spain. The highlights like these, this will create an illusion that we have taken us on the mosque plate. Okay, guys, basically the rest off the highlighting process. We'll use one off the techniques. We just coffered before I'll speed up the video and I'll see you in the next video where we will call for color bleeding and facial effect.
31. Visual effects: These will be our final video lesson for our character design project. In this video, we will create color bleeding affect and add backlighting and some color correction. But before that, let's at shadow at the floor below our character. So it doesn't look like floating in the air for the shadow. Create a new layer below the base color layer, rename Ito s for a shadow change the blending mode to multiply and then press the escape key. Use the poly lasso selection tour and just drove the selection raging like this disuse approximation and your imagination, it doesn't have to be scientifically correct. Okay, I think I need to add more in here as the character is holding around shield in his left hand. And let's add more in this area. Okay? I think it looks good now. Used to share to present Jews dark blue color for now, and just brush like this. Make the left area stronger. Okay, Now, Jews black color now opened the brush panel and changed the roundness off the brush toe Only 40% and just drove more brush strokes at the left side. Control de toe. This, like all add more contact shadows at the field. Next, we can use the smart tool to blur out the ages off the far away shadows. The for Gerba shadows from the object, the more blur the shadows should be, so shadows near the field should be the Sharper's. Next, we want to add color bleeding effect to our growing. Let's create a new layer Namie toe C for color bleeding and then change the blending mode to color. Okay, now color bleeding is a real world phenomenon in the real world, when a light hits a surface, the color off that surfers will bounce off and affect other objects around it. So if, for example, a light hits this red shirt, the red color will be feasible tinting the surrounding object. So we will see a slight off right color on this helmet or mosque, and also on this shoulder armor in here. So that is the basic idea off color bleeding. Technically, we can just use the shit brush, hold out and click on the shirt to sample the red color. So we know half that great color as the foreground color and then just brush away like this . That is the basic color bidding technique. We can also use selection for finer control. So, for example, we can use the poli lasso tool, create selection like these, used the shed tool and brush them with red color like this. If you think the border is too harsh, we can use this March 2 to smooth it out. So those are the techniques are be using for color bleeding. I'll speed up the video now, as we don't have anything new to discuss. - Brake lights is one off the secret ingredients that will make our artwork stand out. Generally speaking, backlighting slighting technique used in photography and film for making the focal or domain object in a camera toe have strong presence even in dark areas with back lights, our main object well, not entirely consumed by darkness. Instead, it will show the silhouette off the object so the fewer can see or sense the depth off the shapes for reading backlight. Let's create a new layer Namie toe fee for official effect. You can actually name these to any name you want. I use fee name for anything that actually have normal blending mode. We can put things like sunglasses or monster saliva or any other semi transparent elements in this layer. I like to use this layer for backlight because when you see normal blending mode instead off screen, it will give a very strong, opaque color. Okay, so imagine we have a strong, colorful light source in here. There will be some highlights in the head here at the Shield and also in here. For these, we can use the poly lasso tool or the mental toe. Create the selection. I'll use the pen tool for now. Okay, Control, enter To confirm it to selection, used the shed tool and take a light blue color. Then just draw the color like these. Okay, guys, all of the selection techniques are similar toe shading and highlight process. So I just speed up the video until all of the back lightings are finished. - We want to make the front laid and the triangle arguments on a shield glowing for glowing effects. We need tohave another layer that is not bound our clip to the base color layer. So create a new earlier again, this layer should be free, not clipped to the best layer. Otherwise, the glowing colors will be feasible only on existing pig sauce off the base color layer. Rename it to glows. We went to select all off the glow color Ragen, so go down to the base color layer. Use the magic one tool, turn off contiguous and click on one off the region to select them all. Go back to the glow slayer, then fill it with a bright blue color. I'm using the same blue color with the backlight. Now change the blending motor to screen, then goto filter, blur. Go Schindler. Let's find a good radius failure in here. I think 30 big sauce will be nice. Click the OK button so we have these glow effects. This is before this is after. Let's add some bloom effects. Also in his go go. Just use the shed to precept and brush in here. Let's add some bloom. Also in this area for this button. Let's pick gold color and that's it. I think we have finished our growing, but I still think this is too dark. So let's click this at adjustment layer button down here. Jules Levels and then dragged the white color stopped to the laugh and maybe a bit off the gray or medium Stop adjustment also. Okay. I think this is already looks great. Now, you might want to add line artworks to your growing. I'm not a big fan, off line artworks, but if you do want to add line artworks, you can use the same techniques we discussed before in the airplane growing project. For now, I consider this illustration as a finished artwork.
32. Workflow conclusion: from our previous project. We have learned that although it seems trouble some at first to use vetter paths and multiple layers to block out our initial colors, the resulting artwork is very versatile as you can easily swap colors known destructively. Also, the awful process off finishing on artwork. Using this workflow is actually much faster than using conventional digital painting method . I can finish a character drawing like these in under two hours. Potter, So to recap, our illustration workflow using only Photoshopped, you offer a process goes like this first sketching second, pressing, then coloring. Thanks during local shading. Global shedding highlights color bleeding outlines, visual effects. Color correction Skating is where we draw a rough sketches to block out our initial ideas. Tracing is where we create director paths on top off the sketches coloring is where we convert those vector pats into selection and create color in separate layers. Text during is where we had textures and details. Local shading is where we had indirect shadows are also known as ambient occlusion, basically self shadows and contact shadows. Global shedding is where we had dark shadows or shadows that are being casted from one object to the other. Highlights is where we had lighter colors. Are speculators to our drawing. Color bleeding is where we at the illusion off colors being reflected and bounce off to the surrounding objects. Outlines is where we had line artwork. I skip this outline step in our character project, but the process is similar to how we had outlines in the airplane project. Visual effects. It's where we at normal layer block on top off our drawing composition. Useful toe. Add strong back light color or reading semi transparent object such as sunglasses or fog, etcetera. The less one is color correction where we can refine the color using adjustment layers. Now you might be wondering by now what if we have more complex drawing than just one object in a canvas, For example, we have big round and we have foreground objects and also other character in the scene. How do we approach that? Well, basically, we need to defy the illustration into suffer all compose ation layers in a form off group layers, for example, big, round me ground and foreground. It doesn't have to be three layer groups. You can have as much compositionally or groups as your illustration requires it now for each off this composition layer group, we will have all of the workflow layers applied. So for example, we're against like all of these layers. Direct this to the group button down here a name it mid ground, for example. So this is one compose a shin group. If you have drawings in the background, we will have another group like this called background. And inside it we have all of the layers from based color early years shading, etcetera. And if we have four grown elements, we should have another group in here called foreground. And inside it also will have based color layer, texture, layer, local shading layer etcetera. I'm sure you get the idea here. Okay, so this photo shop workflow is good and fast. But I need to tell you that you can go even faster with help off Adobe Illustrator Using Adobe Illustrator, we can skip traditional very terra prats creation in photo shop and also skip the tedious process off blocking our colors to multiple layers. You see the life Spain feature in Adobe Illustrator, along with its abundant vector Anything tools, we can create clean shapes and make coloring really fast for his former shop illustrator. Combined workflow, you can check our recommended courses in the course description.
