1. Class introduction : Who doesn't love animals? They can be better than real friends. Sometimes. That's better than making your favorite fairy friend, the portrait gift. The IY projects like these just puts DOI until your heart. In this class we're gonna do a bunch of fun stuff with Procreate on your iPad. I will first show you how can you turn the photo of your pet into simple shapes to easily cartoon eyes it. Then we will make the color blocking for this catch you'll come up with and then add the special touches and effects all the way to the final masterpiece of your favorite friend. This class is for all levels. You'll be able to follow along easily and I'll be walking you step-by-step through each lesson. So by the end of this class, you're going to have a pretty portrait of your pet. Just snap a photo of your favourite best friend. Grab your iPad and pencil, and let's get started. 2. Class project: Before we head to the first lesson, let me first tell you what you will need to start working on your project. The project for our class is really easy. All you need to have with your iPad and pencil and Procreate app. And of course, you can work with any software that you will prefer to draw with. Then you will need to snap a photo of your favorite pet friend, and then you will start working. Once you're done with your pet portrait, or what they need to do is just to head to the project section below the class, create a new project, upload your artwork to be able to share this with me and with your fellow students. And of course, don't hesitate to post any question or suggestion you have in the discussion board below. And it'll be more than happy to help you and answer that. Now that we're done with the class project details, let's now start with the first lesson. 3. Rough Sketch : So for the first lesson of this class, Let's start with opening a new document in Procreate, and then grab the photo of your pet. Let's now take the opacity for this a little bit down and create a new layer above that. And with a red color and any brush you prefer. Let's just analyze the main shapes for your pet. Now for this case, we have this oval shape face and we have the two years and the eyes, and it's nostril. Let's continue working on the body. Just like this. We will analyze where everything is going. Just by tracing your photo is very easy so that we can know where everything is. Alright, let's now create a new layer and start customizing this a little bit. As you can see, I'm trying to exaggerate all the lines that we've done earlier by tracing the photo. I'm just making the head of bed bigger. Putting the nose up a little bit, making cute big eyes. Just to make the photo more keratinized. Just like that. It's a really nice tip and it will make it easy for you to create a rough sketch for your pet to continuous. Alright. Just very simple lines. Just like this. The nose, big ears, big eyes, and try to mimic the lines that we traced on the photo for the body, just make it very simple. And maybe the tail like this. As you can see, I just simplified everything. You don't have to draw. All the legs are details that I have from the photo adjust that. Just keep it very simple. And maybe a cute little cheeks here. And that's it. That's all for the initial rough sketch for your pet. And now let's head to the next lesson to see how can we refine this sketch and to make it better. 4. Refined Sketch: Now that we've finished our rough sketch, Let's now work on that sketch to refine it a little bit more. Alright, we will take the opacity down and then we will create a new layer above that. And with the dark color that you prefer, Let's take this brush just like this. And we will start tracing the rough sketch and try to refine it a bit more. The steps really central because it makes it easy for you to block your colors and the next lesson. So just take your time and keep tracing your rough sketch. Alright. You can of course, rotate your drawing in Procreate just to make it easier for you to trace the lines better with a comfortable and steady hands. Right? I created this. I just duplicated this. Now the pupils, the nostril. And remember it's a keratinized portraits, so you don't have to stick to any real proportions for real animal anatomy or anything. You just keep it nice and simple. And of course you can express your pet with anything that you want. And it just has anything unique to it and how it looks. You just can emphasize this feature in him and the sketch. This will make it so much unique to it and it will be very nice to it. Alright, let's continue. And now that we've furnished with this, Let's create a new layer below that and make this circle. Alright. I just duplicated the layer of the sketch. And I closed one, and I just deleted this part as f, the pads just popping out of this circle. Alright, let's continue. Now I created a new layer and I will take the opacity down a little bit for this circle, I created a new layer to make like a wreath of flowers all around the pet. Will make it so cute and it will really look nice when we color this. For the flowers, you can just draw some simple flowers. Or if you simply search on Pinterest or Google images for flowers. And you can trace them or try to mimic that with your pencil. And now let's just make a shape to put its name later. And let's continue drawing the flowers and the plants we have here. Alright. Just keep it very simple to keratinized portrays it doesn't have to be real or anything. Just keep it cute and sample. All right, let's continue and maybe delete these lines. And let's create a new layer to write the name. I'll call it Garfield cat. Bite. Maybe to little hearts, well around the knee. And that's had for their fine sketch. I hope you're following along and that's your finished with your refined sketch for your pet right now. And let's head to the next lesson to star color blocking. 5. Color blocking: Now that we've finished with the sketch, Let's start the color blocking process. Alright. As you can see, I'm taking all the sketch layers, opacity a little bit down to be able to work on the coloring, just like this. Alright, and here is the color palette I chose to work. Let's set it as default. And of course you can choose any colors you want. For this step, I'll first create a new layer below the sketch. And I will create a circle. You just keep the pencil to be a straight circle like this, and it will give it this color. Now I'll create a new layer to start coloring the cat. Alright? You just keep it simple and trace the lines carefully. Just like this. Alright, with this color, I'll start working on this shape and then drag the color to fill it like this. Delete this. And then I will create another layer. For the eyes. You just hold your pencil to create a circle and then duplicate this, drag it like this. And then I'll pinch them together to be in one layer, create a new layer and had the clipping mask to be inside of it. And I will create two ovals for the pupils with any dark color you want, just like that. And it will hit Edit Shape to modify the ellipse I just made. And I will drag the color just like that. But right now I will create the nostril with this pink, cute color. And another layer for this part. Alright. It just looks cute already. I just love it. Let's continue. Now with the buddy. I created a new layer and I'm painting it just like that. All right. Now, another layer for the ears below the face and drag the color. Just like this, I will make another clipping mask layer inside the ears and it will just color it with pink color. All right. I'm making another layer for this part. As you can see, I'm holding my pencil and hit Edit Shape and work with the anchor points just to modify the shape like this. Alright, that's nice. Let's just move forward from here. I created those two hearts and now maybe just writing Garfield cat. Of course, at this point you will type the name for your pet. Now, let's create another layer with a green color to start working on the wreath and coloring the flowers or plants and everything. Now, drawing the leaves. Just like this, tracing my refined sketch. And let's keep going. And I'm just dragging the green color inside the leaves. Make sure to close any shape you have to be able to drive the color right inside the shape. Let's now work on the flowers. Let's create this yellow flower. Maybe a pink one. Remember, just keep it very simple. It's keratinized portraits, keratinized flowers and everything. Right? And maybe this 123, it looks cute already. All right, let's keep going. And these little cubes, flowers. And I just forgot to color these leaves. Let us make it and add some details here and there. And choosing another color for this. And this one also. Here, we can just make some small little red orange dots. And that's it. That's all for the color blocking part. Let's now head to the last lesson where, where we will add all the special effects and that is to finish our portrait. 6. Final Touches : Now that we've finished blocking, let's start working on the final touches and effects. Alright, I'll create a new layer here and make a clipping mask inside the face. And let's just choose this brush here. You will find this brush in the resources section. You can just download it and work with it. It just gives this grainy effect. As you can see. These little touches just gave some depth to the face. This is one of my favorite steps. It just takes the flat shapes into depth to be able to make some effects here. All right, maybe some light color here in the head. And for the eyes and just make it alpha lock for the pupils to be able to lock the pixels and draw inside of it. And let's just make two little white dots here in the eye. And also make us look for the layer of the eyes. And maybe with this soft brush, we will make this effect. Let's now create another clipping mask, hard light in the blending mode layer. To be like this reflection here and the eyes. Let's now create another layer also in the clipping mask. To be, to be able to draw in it with dark colors, some touches here and there. The steps are the same. Your data, you just create a new layer in each layer, make it a clipping mask to start drawing inside. And now we're working on the ears. Also dark colors. Just like this. Now let's work on the body will create a new layer, also in the clipping mask. And also this red color with the same brush. And just give some facts here. And sunlight color here. Just like that. Alright, tree looks nice. For this circle. Let's just draw inside it a little bit with this color. And maybe some light color here. Just like this. And some touches here too, on this part. Alright. Now let's draw this line with a dark color. I hit Edit Shape and then start moving the points and then rotate it like this. Alright, much better. Let's continue from here. And now as you can see, I'm drawing the whiskers. I just feel that this layer needs to be modified a little bit. And I will get the selection tool here with a warp option. And just take this a little bit up and also this one. And I just erase this part. Yeah, Tory, looks cute. All right, let's now continue the whiskers. Just like this. Alright, let's continue. Now for the nostril, I will make alpha lock for this layer. And I start giving it too dark color to add some depth to it. And maybe some dark color below it. And that's nice. Hide all the layers for the sketch. And that's it. And this is our colored version of the pet. Let's make the final touches from here. Or you like the composition so far I hope you're following along and by now, I suppose that you're, you're almost finished with your pet portrait. All right, Let's head back to the buddy and just select the sport with a dark brush. Let's just make some effect here. Just take that as if this is the back leg. And also for this part, let's add some dark colors here. And maybe some light here below the face. Just to make the face clear. Alright, Let's now head to the wreath. And with this bonobo chalk brush, we'll choose a dark green color and we will start just give some effects here. Some shadows inside the leaves. They just added some contrast to the illustration. Alright, let's continue. And of course, inside these flowers, we will add some shadows and lights. And maybe here and the circle, we will add some shadows below the flowers and the leaves, just like this. That's better. All right. Now I selected the pupil and just make it a little bit darker from the adjustments menu above. And now let's add some dark brushes here and there in the face below, and all around the eyes. Alright. Let's now create another layer inside the circle with a light color. Let's make some stripes like this. I really like this effect. It looks amazing, right? Alright. And maybe take this chat is multiply blending mode much better. And the opacity a little bit down here for these stripes. And that's it. Let's continue. I now create another layer clipping mask inside the Rees. And with a little tiny, I know they're really little brush. I'll make some lines inside the leaves just like that, with a light color. Much better. These little details are the ones that gives richness to your scene. And you're free to do whatever you want in the details part. Alright. I feel that I need to add more details to the body just like some hairs. Let's try. It's a very simple. We are really minor details, but I just feel that it adds something to the portrait. And also in the face. Just like that. I love it. Alright? Alright. Let's now just add some blush on the cheeks of the FET. And inside the pupils. Some reflection here and there, just like this. All right, let's continue. Let's now change the color of the background. I feel now that we need to make something different, Let's just duplicate this file and open one. And just let's make everything flat. That's first delete all the sketch hidden layers that we don't need. Let's just delete that and then let's pinch all the layers that we have to make the portrait in one layer to start adding more effects. Let's delete this one too. All right, Let's now head to the adjustments. And so that the noise, as you can see, we have this option. You can swipe to the right or to the left to make the noise more or less. Looks really nice. Let's duplicate the layer and heads now to the Gradient Map. You can see they have a lot of effects. I like this one and then I like to take the opacity down and maybe start playing with the blending modes till I find the right one. I like this one so much the vivid light effect and the opacity down. But now we need to change the color for the background again, maybe something bluish. And that's it. I just love it. That's it. I really hope you enjoyed this class and I hope you have a portrait for your pet right now. I just can't wait to see it, guys. I just can't wait to see. I hope he showed me what you came up with for your pets. And of course, you can also add a snapshot for your pet to see the illustration and the pet to share it with me and with your fellow students.
